S

enior citizens, believing they must present identification in person to load their SuperGold AT HOP card concessions, have been lining up at Auckland Transport customer service centres.

At times long queues have formed at the Botany Town Centre AT site taking some people one-anda-half hours to get their cards loaded.

An AT spokesman says the Botany centre is the only location in East Auckland that provides an inperson option to load the SuperGold concession.

But they can get their concession loaded onto the card by post or online at the AT website as well as in person.

However Howick ward councillor Dick Quax says he has found obtaining the new seniors gold card is not quite as simple as has been made out by AT and is concerned that many elderly people are put off by the convoluted process.

“When I bought my card which cost $15 and registered it on line, I noticed that the $5 that I understood was to be loaded onto

my card did not show on my account.

“When I called AT to ask why this was, I was told that I needed to provide my SuperGold card at the AT Botany service centre. This despite having presented my SuperGold card when I purchased the AT HOP card. “When I presented myself at the service centre I was told my HOP card was invalid. AT now has my $15 and my card – it’s been frustrating and time consuming.”

Once people have their gold HOP card they then have 60 days to activate it.

If the card is not activated they will lose the $5 and free travel concessions.

Mr Quax and Howick ward councillor Sharon Stewart are visiting retirement villages and talking to seniors to alert them to the fact that they will lose their travel entitlement if they do not get a new HOP card from Auckland Transport by the end of the month.

As well as the Botany AT service centre Gold AT HOP cards can also be purchased at Pakuranga Lotto, Paper Plus Highland Park, Bucklands Superette and Paper Plus Howick.

changed the rules late last year, requiring SuperGold card holders in Auckland to get a special version of the city’s electronic travel card if they wanted to travel free.

AT says it has “Swap to AT HOP” customer information packs that identify the options a customer can follow to obtain an AT HOP card and load a SuperGold concession. They can be ordered online or by phoning 0800-284-659.

The spokesman says AT has hired extra staff to support the transition to the AT HOP card. It’s running an advertising campaign and has sent out communication about the “Swap to AT HOP” to all AT HOP customers with a request to help friends and family members make the switch.

The detailed “Swap to AT HOP” information booklet is available at other channels, such as AT HOP retailers, Transdev ticket offices and some council locations, such as libraries.

esidents of Argo Drive, Half Moon Bay were up in arms last Friday when contractors started to tear up the tarmac on the corner of Pigeon Mountain Road.

Problems caused by traffic coming from the Half Moon Bay Marina would not be improved, a caller to the Times said.

The work is creating a left-turn lane from Pigeon Mountain Road into Argo Drive, part of a project to introduce metering signals on Pigeon Mountain Road.

The stop-go signals are expected to create breaks in southbound ferry traffic flow for motorists in side streets.

Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Keith Ingram says the project has been ill thought-out.

“We accept road works.

But they are not solving the problem, rather creating a larger problem to address two evening traffic peaks,” he told the Times.

under fire at a recent public meeting organised by the association because of the loss of 15 car parks outside the Stand Children’s Village, bringing the total lost on both sides of the road to 26.

“We do have 15 minute and 20 minute traffic jams, but they are only minor,” Mr Ingram said.

“But we see the price we are paying with metering and the loss of car parks.

We need more car parks; we should not be losing them.”

The project went back to a meeting with Mayor Len Brown in early 2013 when residents raised the issue of difficulties exiting side roads when the ferries came in, Jenni Wild, Auckland Transport’s elected member relationship team manager said.

“It was a priority for the Howick Local Board.”

Board chairman David Collings said the system would only operate at peak times. “Whenever ferries are in its chaos down there, a nightmare

and we need to slow the traffic down so that people drive in a calmer manner. It’s about getting some order.”

The signals will operate between 4 and 6.30pm on weekdays and will only be triggered by queues turning right from Sunderlands Road onto Pigeon Mountain Road or turning right from Pigeon Mountain Road onto Sunderlands Road or Argo Drive.

The $418,000 project is expected to be operating by the end of July.

Approximately 100 people including families and children took part, many in fancy dress.

The usual event wading around the Maraetai Coast Guard Boat was supplemented by a 200 metre swim this year, with 30 braving the cold waters.

It was a chance for the local community to get behind the fun event, as well as the Coastguard, St John’s and Te Puru Sea Scouts who lent their support on the day.

Local businesses also helped providing spot prizes, best fancy dress, fastest swimmer, youngest child and many more.

Money from the event will be used for the local Rotary’s major project this year Green Spaces, enhancing the local environment, plantings, walkways etc.

Beach House debt $210,000

iquidators are chasing almost $210,000 allegedly owed by the owner of the now-closed The Beach House restaurant at Bucklands Beach.

The liquidators’ - KPMG - first report dated March 24 seeks to determine whether there are any further claims on the company Restaurant VIP Ltd, under which The Beach House restaurant and bar operated. It was owned by Alex Kaihea who appears to have left New Zealand.

The report says the liquidators have been unable to contact Mr Kaihea to date however KPMG’s Paul Burns told the Times they had, since filing the report,

received one email.

The Times visited an old address of Mr Kaihea’s but found no-one home. In January, many phone calls were attempted to Mr Kaihea. His phoned appeared to be switched off.

“Other parties have advised that the business ceased trading in January 2016 when the director shut down the restaurant and subsequently moved overseas,” the liquidators’ report says.

“The landlord entered a new lease arrangement with a third party to prior to liquidation.”

A new unrelated business – Sunset Restaurant & Bar – now operates from the site. It took

over the premises on May 3.

The Times reported in January that diners and a bride-to-be were left in the lurch when the popular restaurant on The Parade closed unexpectedly. It had been closed for about a month at that stage. A Pakuranga bride-to-be had booked her wedding and put down a $1000 deposit and had only learned in January the restaurant was in trouble. It is unknown if she got the deposit back.

“We understand that a number of assets were also removed from the premises before our appointment,” the liquidators say.

On application by the IRD, the

company was placed into liquidation on February 19 “for failing to meet its obligations to Inland Revenue, consisting of overdue Student Loan Employer Contributions, KiwiSaver Employee Deductions, KiwiSaver Employer Contributions, PAYE, GST and ESCT (employer superannuation contribution tax) together with penalties and interest”.

The largest sum sought against any assets recovered is a preferential claim from the IRD for $114,340. Unsecured creditors so far have claims for a little over $95,000. The liquidators have made no payments to any creditors thus far.

“At this stage it is not possible to provide an estimated date for the completion of the liquidation, nor is it possible to provide a definitive statement as to whether sufficient assets will be realised for the purposes of making payment to any class of creditor.”

The report says the company had assets including plant and equipment, office equipment and a vehicle at the date of liquidation.

“The liquidators are undertaking investigations to determine whether there are any claims and/or assets that may give rise to recoveries for the benefit of creditors,” the report says.

Radio stations - new name, same commitment

By PJ Taylor There is massive change occurring quickly across the media landscape and it’s no different on the local turf.

Two local area radio stations that have broadcast in East Auckland for the past eight years have been merged, forming a new one called East FM. The new station replaces the much-loved Howick Village Radio and Botany Radio, that ran for eight and five years respectively.

East FM started broadcasting on the same transmission frequencies, 88.1FM and 107.1FM, on June 7.

The former stations previously came under the operational umbrella of the Howick Village Business Association (HVBA), which now believes the radio

operation is strong and established sufficiently to stand on its own.

The governance of East FM is the responsibility of the recently-formed Howick Radio Charitable Trust.

Becoming a charitable trust means East FM has more opportunities to generate income and apply for public and private sector funding, for its public and community radio service.

The trust says it thanks everyone who has been involved with, contributed to and supported the radio station, and it sincerely wishes that to continue.

East FM, it says, will grow and build on the great work of informing, entertaining and connecting local communities.

Neville’s advice is, “Once you make the decision to do it, do it.”

A long time coming and a dream come true, Joy Oxford said at the celebratory opening of Uxbridge Stage One on Saturday.

The former chair of the governing board of Uxbridge Community Projects, the incorporated society set up in 1982 to drive the Uxbridge Creative Leisure Centre in Uxbridge Road, Howick, reflected on the long journey to reach the new state-of-theart facility. It includes the Malcolm Smith Art Gallery, art studios, a lounge and openplan cafe.

The adjacent church building is currently being upgraded to a dedicated theatre which will be opened in October.

Mrs Oxford said the board took every opportunity to make submissions to the then Manukau City Council (MCC).

“There was no way they were going to forget us,” she said. “We were not going away. I think we drove them mad, but the project made it into the council’s Long-term Plan and then its budget.

“Our enthusiastic supporter, Jami-Lee Ross [then a Manukau City councillor and now Botany MP] pushed our case at every opportunity. We are forever grateful.”

But, she said, “time was not on our side” as MCC was swallowed into Auckland Council. “Once again we had to push hard. It was a nervous time for Uxbridge as our then manager Tony Morgan made presentations to the council.”

Auckland Mayor Len Brown said Mrs Oxford had given “extraordinary service”.

“This is a gift to Howick for future generations. It comes off the back of debate and discussion in the days of folding up MCC,” he said. “In that last budget debate we had to ensure that the budget for the Uxbridge upgrade was in. It was in our first [Auckland Council] Long-term Plan discussion; it was my job to make sure it came through and it did.”

Howick Local Board chairman David Collings said the debate to get the new building was over two decades old.

“This has been a long time coming. If it wasn’t for Jami-Lee Ross this project would not have got into the Long-term Plan,” he said. “I was one of the critics of the scale of the project, but this building is a testament to the efforts he made. Thank you for carrying it on. It could have been dropped but, with a lot of pressure, it was seen as worthy of council funding.”

Mr Collings also paid tribute to the board’s deputy chair Adele White who leads its arts, culture and events portfolio.

“There was some controversy around funding but Adele led it through,” he said. “She kept the project on the line and kept the momentum going against strong debates.”

The last word came from Ms White who alluded to a controversial proposal put forward by former Howick Local Board chairman Michael Williams who wanted the planned complex turned into a town hall.

“We could have had a town hall,” she quipped! “This has been a process of rejuvenation. It’s a beautiful place and a significant jewel in Howick’s crown.” ➤ Malcolm Smith Gallery, Page 16

Old soldiers look forward

t the same time as fielding media questions about a bomb blast near the Iraqi camp where Kiwi troops were based, Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee also got down to grass roots advice in East Tamaki last Friday.

He was hosted by Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross at a quarterly business leaders’ lunch, but also met with veterans and management of Howick RSA and visited the Hynds Pipe Systems East Tamaki factory.

His day was pre-empted by a late-night call about a bomb blast near the Taji Military Camp in Iraq. The Times asked for his personal reaction.

“I was told there had been a bomb blast near the Taji Camp. But before we had gone any further I asked ‘how are our people?’

“I learned that it happened two-three kilometres away from where our unit is, outside the south-west boundary of the military camp,” he said.

“The camp covers 65 square kilometres. It has a secure perimeter which is patrolled and monitored. We want our guys as safe as possible.

“The alert status there is ‘high’. Everyone knows that,” Mr Brownlee said.

“But we are there because we don’t want this happening here in New Zealand. We

want that ‘evil daji’ taken care of.”

The Iraqis, he said, were making good progress.

“But we are going to see just how evil these people are as Fallujah is re-taken. The New Zealanders and Australians have trained about 7000 Iraqi soldiers to date. A number of them are on that front and acquitting themselves extremely well.

“But we are doing this for our own protection as much as anything else.”

Discussion with Howick RSA representatives was about how they saw the proposals in the recently announced 2016 Defence White Paper on the future

of New Zealand’s Defence Force.

“It is good to get with onthe-ground people who have service experience and an ongoing interest in defence matters, Mr Brownlee said.

“I was very enthused about the fact that they were more interested in the future than the past. Our discussion was about the capabilities to be developed. It’s always refreshing that people who have served seldom look backwards, rather forwards.”

Meanwhile Mr Brownlee’s morning visit was to the Hynds Pipe Systems East Tamaki factory.

“It’s still a family business and of a significant scale,” he

said.

But more importantly was the company’s contribution to repairing the underground infrastructure damage after the Christchurch earthquakes.

“We needed pipes fast and they were provided by Hynds,” Mr Brownlee, who is also the Minister for Greater Christchurch Regeneration, said. “I have seen lots of these pipes on the side of the road and from a resilience point of view they [Hynds] had the capacity.

“I wanted to take the opportunity to see their business and say thanks for them to be so willing to invest in this project.”

ifty Year 13 students from Pakuranga College participating in the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) were taken into the ‘Dragons’ Den’ at Pakuranga College recently.

As part of the scheme, YES teams set up a company, were involved in creating real products or services, compiled a business plan and made real profit or loss.

Thousands of students participate nationally each year as students learn by developing innovative thinking and a sharp sense of business enterprise.

The programme culminates in a national awards event, at which the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Company of the Year is announced.

Last year’s national winner was Pakuranga College team ABS (A Brilliant Signature).

Teams facing a panel of businesspeople in the Dragons’ Den adopted various tactics to get the judges’ attention.

Dough Boy plans to sell a silicon kneading bag aimed at reducing mess in the kitchen.

It proudly presented the judges with a tray of cookies.

Unfortunately, their plan went awry when team member Doris Liu allowed nerves to get the better of her and dropped them on the floor.

“It was so embarrassing,” she said “but the judges were really nice about it and we all had a good laugh.”

Kiwi Kards whose concept is a Top Trumps style trivia game focussing on famous Kiwis, put the judges through their paces by quizzing them about significant New Zealanders.

“The judges’ feedback was really useful,” said team members Shae Fraser and Courtney Purchase. “They said we had strong financials and a really innovative concept, but that we need to practice our presentation skills.”

Josh Lee and Paul Koraua of Vicarus, who are planning to create an NCEA guidebook for Year 10 and 11 students, agreed.

“We were concentrating on being thorough, but we ran out of time. This was a really good lesson in the importance of planning your time when you are presenting.”

All of the participants seemed very positive about the experience. “It was really nerve-racking” said Scarlett Howard of event organiser

EMF, “but I think it is great practice in presenting ideas to real business people.”

Year 13 Business Studies teacher Tom Lyall said: “I think the Dragons’ Den event is one of the best parts of the course as it is great real life business experience. They are also competing with other schools and the best business students in Auckland.

“Public speaking is such an important life and business skill to have, so this is a great opportunity.”

■■ Of 50 teams in the Auckland East Region, only 10 will go through to the regional final on July 27 at AUT. One team from each region then goes to the national final based on their Dragons’ Den results, Regional Co-ordinator marks and business plan review.

■■ The next stage for all teams will be a product launch, which will take place at Pakuranga College.

roposals to restrict dogs to running under control on a leash at 10am-5pm in winter on Howick Ward beaches is upsetting dog owners who are used to being able to run them off leash at all times in winter.

Dog owner and Howick Local Board elected member Gary Boles is urging people to make their views known.

“We have had rules for our local area for years and have never had a problem,” he says.

“I am afraid that we will lose a lot of privileges with off leash access in many areas prohibited through the whole summer.”

As part of Auckland Council’s new policy and bylaw on dogs, region-wide dog access rules were adopted for areas, such as playgrounds, sports surfaces and roads and on regional parks. But local boards were made responsible for decisions about dog access on local parks and beaches.

Howick Local Board is proposing rule changes at Bucklands Beach (including Little Bucks), Mellons Bay, Cockle Bay, Eastern and Howick beaches.

The former Manukau City Council rule is more restrictive on summer mornings and has a longer summer season, but allows under control off a

leash at all times in winter.

Proposed changes for summer (Labour weekend until March 31) are under control off a leash before 10am and after 7pm and prohibited from 10am-7pm.

In winter (April 1 until the Friday before Labour weekend) the change is under control off a leash before 10am and after 4pm but under control on a leash from 10am-4pm.

Other proposals are:

■■ To identify 103 areas as dog

friendly and suitable for dogs

to run and play off leash at all times.

■■ Introduce Musick Point Esplanade Reserve as an under control off leash area.

■■ Maintain under control off leash access to quiet areas adjacent to Bucklands Beach, Mellons Bay, Howick Beach and Eastern Beach.

■■ Introduce under control on leash along the shore banks of Wakaaranga Creek to Highbrook Creek, including Pakuranga Creek, to protect vulnerable bird species but prohibit dog access in the foreshore areas to protect vulnerable bird species such as dotterels and banded rail.

■■ Prohibit dog access to Mangemangeroa Reserve and Chisbury Terrace to protect wildlife.

■■ Change the default access rule so that unless stated that they are restricted, prohibited or under control off a leash, they will need to be under control on a leash.

Mr Boles says people should speak up if they want the dog access status quo dog retained.

Bathroom super store excites A

bathroom is no longer about a shower and a toilet. It’s a space people can express themselves, creating hotel luxury in a home and not at huge expense, Josh Burkhead, director of Elite Bathroomware says.

Josh took over the family business from his Dad 15 years ago and it’s grown close to 30 times in turnover and staff numbers which are up to 15 from three.

“We have a lot of experience in the industry with people who have been here a long time,” he says.

For the first 14 years of his watch the company operated from its original premises in Lady Ruby Drive, East Tamaki.

But as the retail side of the business grew it was time to move to larger premises and last year the company opened in Allens Road, East Tamaki.

The new showroom quadrupled the retail space. The business was thriving, Josh says.

“We needed more staff and the ability to display and showcase more products.

“This store is often referred to as the Highbrook super store,” Josh says.

“It’s the largest bathroom showroom in Auckland with a lot of exclusive products along with all the big brands.

Bathroomware, he says, is a visual thing. People are going into a new home and have to live with their choices.

“They want to touch the products and feel things, such as the water pressure from a shower head.”

When the popular shower rain heads first appeared on the market, Elite Bathroomware was supplying them.

Now customers have more than 100 different shower heads to choose from.

Shopping for bathroomware has turned into an experience by the Elite team, for example free espresso coffee made by a professional barista on Saturdays, and a kids’ corner with child-friendly staff which makes shopping with the children a much less stressful experience.

“People love it,” Josh says.

The store is an interactive showroom including a dedicated spray area for people to test the variety of shower heads and the way they work, such as the way air is injected to double the spray pressure.

“Buying a shower without testing it is like buying a car without driving it,” Josh says.

Style changes over the years have been immense, Josh says, such as soft closing toilet seats, wall hung vanities, vessel-style basins and unsightly wires protruding from heated towel rails hidden out of sight.

People visit the showroom from distant cities, such as Palmerston North, Whangarei, Thames, and Tauranga “No-one provides the display or sells at the price we do,” Josh says.

“That comes down to us. We do the hard negotiating with the suppliers and importers and the public doesn’t have to battle the price.”

The main difference between Elite and other plumbing retail outlets, he says, is being set up purely for members of the public rather than the trade.

“When I took over the business I learned from my clients.

If I couldn’t find something, I would get on to the suppliers for samples of new products coming onto the market. That

was exciting.

“When I first started we had only five or six suppliers. The biggest change we have seen has been the major plumbing chains starting to import their own merchandise and cutting out local suppliers.

“That left the door wide open for Elite to walk in and deal with great suppliers to achieve a great range, price and service” – brands such as Methven, Felton and quality German products such as Hansgrohe, and Villeroy and Boch.

Josh says he’s always on to the suppliers about what’s new and what’s coming next.

A full renovation service, including bathroom design and project management, has always been part of the business. But these days the retail arm has grown to the extent that the renovation service accounts for only 15% of the business.

“Our strength,” Josh says, “is having the largest handpicked range. We don’t display anything that is not popular or won’t sell.”

Using a ‘Warehouse’ model Josh buys in bulk and sells at a competitive rate.

“Our main interest is getting our clients the best value for their dollar. A lot is about customer service, sticking to our strength and focusing on what we do well.

“Gone are days when a client says to a plumber ‘you sort it’.

These days they look at magazines, television and online.

Everyone knows what they like and all have a vision when they walk in here.”

Before Josh took over, the company had been advertising with the Howick and Pakuranga Times for close to 20 years.

“From day one we have used radio and the newspaper,” Josh says. “I believe advertising is the key part to any successful business. Our type of product is a visual thing and seeing our products in print gets the people in the door.

“We book some of our advertising a year in advance. Print is a very good advertising medium.”

ith 17 years in real estate behind him, Karl Vermeulen remains as excited about the property business as he ever was.

He’s just cleaned up his third award as one of Harcourts International top sales consultants and has the benefit of experience to pass on to newcomers wanting to make it in the industry.

“It’s a fantastic career,” he says. “You have control of your own destiny and it’s one of the few careers where you can be fully rewarded for your work.

There is no cap on the income and no barriers to anyone wanting to join the industry.”

But, he warns, “don’t underestimate how hard you might have to work,” recalling the hot summer days he has spent dressed up in his suit door knocking instead of going to the beach, “and no-one calls you back”.

“You’ve got to deal with that rejection when you start out.”

But there are also highlights, he says, for example taking over a house which had been on the market for six months and was one week out from a mortgagee sale.

“We got close to the asking price and avoided the mortgagee sale which is very satisfying. It makes a difference in peoples’ lives.”

Mr Vermuelen grew up in Howick, becoming the first new entrant at Botany Downs Primary School, followed by stints at Howick Intermediate and St Kentigern College.

He trained as a graphic designer but property investment was always beckoning.

For more than 21 years he and his wife Louise have invested in a series of properties which they have lived in with the aim of gaining “financial freedom down the track”.

which has a team of 28 licensed sales people, ever since.

“It was hard to begin with,” he says. “There were times when I felt like quitting because it can push your comfort zone a lot.

“The industry has a 90 per cent drop-out rate over the first two years so I had to keep on being positive.”He advises aspiring real estate sales consultants to consider the training systems provided by companies.

“It’s like an apprenticeship,” he says.

“When starting out you’re keen to list someone’s property. It’s their most valuable asset and you need to know that structures are in place to protect the path and make sure people are comfortable with you. There are a lot of grey areas so you must have an empathy with people and an internal moral compass.”

He’s watched the south-east market change with the demographic profile of people coming into and leaving the area different from 15 years ago.

With a median price of $1.05 million compared with $250,000-$280,000 a decade ago trends reflect the changing shape of Auckland, he says.

Some people are comfortable

starting out with an apartment compared with a full site; baby boomers are moving to places such as Tauranga, Hamilton and Beachlands; and the new phenomenon of retirement villages is swallowing up retirees.

But for first-home buyers his advice is to “get into the market when you can. The only trend in prices is upwards, even during the GFC (global financial crisis) when prices fell by only a few per cent.

“Now we have gridlock in the market. People don’t want to sell in case they can’t buy elsewhere. One thing I see is this area becoming more gentrified – like eastern bays where values are higher and turnover is more considered.

“Now the median price has reached $1m these are major financial decisions affecting families. I think we will see an emerging trend of lower turnover.”

This is leaving real estate sales people fighting for listings and carrying out considerable self promotion.

“You have got to be seen and be available 24/7, pretty much on call,” he says. “Even at Christmas when the European market drops off, people of other cultures are still in the market.”

Mental health model challenged Affirmation-based approaches to mental wellbeing are fundamentally flawed and set the individual up to fail

ong time HowickPakuranga mental health professional Martin Camilleri is looking for people in the local community to join a recently-formed working action group.

The East Auckland Mental Health Initiative (EMI) has been formed to challenge and overhaul the present concepts of mental illness and mental health. It’s looking for local community support to spearhead MindEasy, a comprehensive educational and therapeutic tool created by Mr Camilleri during the course of his 40-year career.

He says EMI views the contemporary ‘sick model’ concept of mental illness as antiquated and based on false assumptions.

“It is economically wasteful, creates dependency and contributes enormously to human suffering,” he says. “Conversely, MindEasy will teach people how to overcome personal issues without the need for months of counselling, or a lifetime on medication.”

Currently more than

400,000 Kiwis are on medication for anxiety and depression, Mr Camilleri says. Also, New Zealand has among the highest incidences of domestic violence and suicides among young people.

Instead of ‘treating’ clients, he says he prefers to equip them with tools to disarm simple tricks of the brain which form the basis of all so-called ‘psychological disorders’.

The MindEasy programme can be taught from an early age and, he says, would go a long way towards eliminating the onset of mental issues.

Champion campaigns for organ music revival Howickian Paul Chan has won first prize in the national competition for the “King of Instruments.”

He shares first place with a recent graduate from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in the National Organ Competition held over Queen’s Birthday weekend in Christchurch.

The senior organ scholar of Holy Trinity Cathedral is very passionate about the organ and believes that it is a versatile instrument that should be heard more in concert halls and schools.

“The organ is not necessarily associated with the Christian faith, it can be played and enjoyed by anyone,” Paul says.

“It is not simply a musical instrument, though a rather sophisticated one resembling the sounds of an orchestra.”

Paul, who also plays at King’s College as the college organist, believes the revival of interest in organ music is not impossible.

“I am trying to make this happen by learning and playing it myself as a young organist.

“The deep, rich sound of the organ stirs my soul every time I listen to it.”

Initially trained in piano from a young age, Paul developed an interest in organ playing while serving as a church organist in his teens.

Dogs that were once ginger, copper, Blenheim, liver, mahogany, rust or auburn coloured will soon be known only as “red”.

Say goodbye to your wheaten, cinnamon or chocolate coloured pooch and hello to the more prosaic “brown”.

“We’re standardising the colours we use to describe dogs into eleven plain shades, to bring them into line with the National Dog Database run by the Department of Internal Affairs,” says Auckland Council’s Bylaws and Regulatory Committee Chair, Councillor Calum Penrose.

The National Dog Database holds details of all registered dogs, their owners and any infringements that may have been issued against an owner or person in charge of a dog.

When a dog is picked up by council officers they will be able to check the database, locate the owner and contact them.

Gallery rises like a phoenix from rubble

he spirit of the former architect and staunch supporter of what is now known as the Uxbridge Arts and Culture Centre, the late Malcolm Smith, was close to many hearts on Saturday as the Malcolm Smith Gallery was officially opened.

The function ran in conjunction with the official opening of Uxbridge Stage one, consisting of the gallery, art studios, a lounge and open-plan cafe.

Mr Smith’s wife Christina and members of his family were special invited guests.

Mrs Smith said her first thought on seeing the new building was “one of amazement that the spirit of Uxbridge is still here”.

“The space has a light and restrained elegance. The gallery is an unassuming room and I wondered what a treasure of creativity it would hold? It has. What a special time this is, refreshing his soul,” she said.

“Malcolm believed in the universal truth and for a long time envisaged in Howick a place where people could mix and mingle. He lived and dreamed of a gallery and

“His reformation of the largest of the old buildings and years of work on the committee helped make Uxbridge what it is today. It has come like a phoenix from the rubble with the decision to have his name transferred to the new facility.

“May Uxbridge continue to flourish.”

The gallery’s curator, Balamohan Shingade officially opened the building saying the underlying character and ethos of what the new building stood for was the natural quality of softness and “flexible malleability as concrete yielded to the touch of timber”. “It’s focused on being

responsive to the needs of the community.”

As a founding member of Uxbridge, Malcolm Smith, he said, envisaged a centre for his hometown that would be a beacon for the art and ideas of its day. With a nod to its namesake, the Malcolm Smith Gallery was opening, he said, with an exhibition of art works comprised of architectural references.

“Soft Architecture focuses not on architects or buildings, but rather concerns art under the curfew of architecture, of this Gallery’s architecture in particular.

“Some art works are explicitly architectural, while others are speculative

and performative; some play with spatio-temporal qualities of the building, while others explore the building’s social mission. “The art works are deceptive in their simplicity, but the apparent restraint or lightness of touch belies their rigour.”

Pyjamas for kids More than $600 was collected to buy 60 pairs of pyjamas to donate to the children’s hospital Kidz First.

Penny Schultz responded to an SOS call for the garments by approaching all her colleagues at Ray White Real Estate’s Howick office. Their donation was the first response to this year’s request for help.

As well as children having treatment at the hospital, Kidz First also sends pyjamas to other former needy patients at their homes or kindergartens.

Armed Offenders Squad respond to hoax threat The Armed Offenders Squad was dispatched to Golflands today after a threat was made on Facebook, police have confirmed.

“This morning (Saturday) police visited an address in response to a threat made via social media,” a police spokesman told the Times.

“They have since found the threat to be a hoax.”

No on-screen kissing please

had Ghazali thought he had got really lucky when he got a call from casting director Kal Kular saying he had bagged the role he had auditioned for in the film Feeling Lucky.

Excited about the big break he had been dreaming of, the 23-year-old who has done a stint of modelling and acting was in a bit of a dilemma.

Belonging to the Muslim faith, former Botany resident said he was a bit anxious about intimacy on screen.

After a sleepless night, he decided to be upfront about it and called up Ms Kular the next morning.

“I hope there are no kissing scenes on screen. Being a Muslim, I wouldn’t want to embarrass my parents,” he says a bit awkwardly.

Ms Kular promptly informed the Dreamz Production director Devesh Pratap Singh and producer Dr Rachel Singh saying that one of the heroes of the film, Ahad was not comfortable with onscreen kissing.

“But the other three leads were more than happy to do it,” she laughs.

Is there a property crash coming?

s our property market totally out of control? With the average price in Auckland close to $1m is this market advancing to the precipice of a huge cliff, asks local chartered accountant Bernie Drumm.

The press is not only highlighting the difficulties of first home buyers trying to enter the Auckland market, it’s now implying that Auckland city is being overwhelmed by tragic stories of the plight of the homeless. All this is very disquieting and helping to sow the seeds of uncertainty about where the property market is heading.

Is there a crash coming?

Bernie says we should be looking at the reality of what’s happening, not the incessant and in some cases ill-conceived articles concerning the behaviour of the property market. Auckland is a growing and sophisticated city, even on global standards now.

The whole region is expanding at an alarming rate which everyone would have to accept is hugely positive for the whole economy.

The question is: why is this happening?

The statistics reveal that little old New Zealand is outperforming most of all our trading partners. Even Aussies are looking enviously across the Tasman at how we are handling things

here perhaps wishing they had adopted the same strategies we have had for some years now.

Perhaps New Zealand is perceived as a great place to live and bring up a family. Are we being seen as a safe-haven compared to the great uncertainty that seems to be gripping Europe and the States?

The fact is we are experiencing record immigration from all variety of countries, not just from Asia. We are also seeing unprecedented numbers of returning Kiwis (many from Australia) who have decided that New Zealand is a better bet now, so let’s take a real look at why our property market appears to be “out of control”.

You cannot have an expanding economy, particularly through increased population, without an increased demand for houses says Bernie. We simply don’t have enough houses to meet this demand and Auckland is where this pressure is extreme. This is a healthy thing- not a pending disaster about to inflict some massive hardship on the community. Bernie says it’s the natural outcome of high demand.

Until we can increase the supply of houses to try and meet the demand we will continue to experience increased prices.

It’s starting to spill over into the surrounding regions of Hamilton and Tauranga in the South and to

Whangarei in the north. This is not being caused through greedy speculators, faceless off shore invaders in for a quick buck.

The recent survey by IRD proved this beyond doubt that this is a totally home grown problem and an economic reality.

Auckland is a vibrant and growing city. Let’s stop trying to treat the symptom but address the cause: undersupply of houses.

We need the release of more land, more builders, engineers, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, and all the noble trades and professionals that help build homes. That doesn’t sound like a CRASH to me.

Earlier films like Urban Turban followed by the psychological thriller, Ek Ka Do Aur Dhola Ek-The Dark Side of Revenge and romantic comedy Twisted Families, have all been shot in New Zealand and Fiji.

Ahad, who is studying chemical engineering at the Waikato University in Hamilton, says that the seasoned director was very accommodating.

“Taking into consideration that we are all students, he would shoot late evenings and on weekends when I drove from Hamilton to our home

in Bucklands Beach to see my parents.”

Local actor Rishi Deepak who has been part of the industry for the last 11 years and is the executive producer of the film, says they plan to screen Feeling Lucky at the Festival of Globe in San Francisco.

“We will be releasing it in New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, UK and USA,” says Rishi who also plays a comic character of a detective in the film.

veteran of beauty pageants, Adele Krantz is on a double mission – to win a new title for New Zealand and also provide valuable feedback to Howick’s Val Lott about an event on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

Ms Krantz responded to an article in the Times about Mrs Lott’s invitation to send a New Zealand representative to the Miss Regal International Pageant in July.

“At first I was cautious about where I would be sending a girl,” Mrs Lott said at the time. I like to know that pageants are responsible events and I had to be absolutely confident about this one.”

So she’s doubly delighted that 27-year-old Ms Krantz has the maturity, pageant and travel experience and a level head to deal with any issue that may come her way.

The pageant is scheduled for 28 days in July which, coincidentally, is an ideal fit with Ms Krantz’s upcoming programme.

As the result of her participation in the Swimsuit USA International pageant in the Dominican Republic she was one of six invited by internationally renowned artist Kevin Berlin to model in the North American launch of his luxury “classic” top

hat collection in New York on July 7.

With plans to fly to New York and combine it with a holiday, she is now scheduled to go on to Antigua instead of returning to Auckland.

The freelance photographer says the Antigua pageant is going to be “an adventure”.

“I don’t know what to expect.

But I can handle anything thrown at me. The itinerary includes pink ribbon fundraisers and a carnival so I will have to plan all my outfits and costumes. I will definitely need two bags rather than the usual one.”

Mrs Lott says she’s confident with Ms Krantz’s experience and the fact that she is at the upper level of the 28-year age limit for the event.

“I don’t have to worry about sending her to unknown territory. I’ve always been very cautionary but I can happily send her on overseas travel and she will be able to report back to me. This is a perfect way to decide if we should go on from here.”

The former Miss Universe New Zealand national director selected Ms Krantz for the Antigua event because the time frame was too tight to organise a fullyblown Miss Howick Regal International pageant. But if this year’s

experience is successful, she will re-launch the Miss Howick contest next year.

And the entrants don’t have to reside in or have a special connection with Howick. Ms Krantz lives in Mission Bay but her connection with Mrs Lott and Howick goes back to meeting Mrs Lott’s pageant offsider, Sarah McIntyre at the Miss Auckland pageant and then Mrs Lott at the Miss Celsius Botany Junction event in 2011 where she won the evening gown award.

She’s participated in four overseas pageants, Miss Model of the World, the Asian Supermodel contest, The World Supermodel competition and Swimsuit USA International.

The remaining task for Mrs Lott and Ms Krantz is to raise the outstanding funds needed to pay for the additional air fare from New York to Antigua. They are planning a high tea and fashion show featuring Joanne Roberts’ Camilla range of high-end luxurious garments.

Feedback We can’t see your buses

Re Auckland Transport bus livery.

The new livery of the Auckland Transport buses which are now operating in the Howick area have not taken into consideration the fact that the navy and grey colour merges into the road colour and is extremely difficult to see at any time of day and virtually impossible to see on rainy dark days and in the evening.

In particular those in our community who should be given extra consideration, namely the elderly and visually impaired, have been given no consideration at all

by AT. The Foundation for the Blind and the Automobile Association are two agencies which should at least have been consulted. It is a well known fact that the hardest vehicle to see on the road is the one which is grey in colour.

I personally know elderly people whose only mode of transport now is by bus and now they are unable to see the bus coming therefore unable to put their hand out as indication to the driver to stop and then missing the bus.

Drivers only stop if passengers indicate their intention to board. If livery must change, no doubt at expense,

then something that stands out is better for both customers and AT. Case in point. The bright yellow ARA buses which were easy to spot and inherently safer than the silver steel grey and dark navy we are now faced with.

It is extremely disappointing to see that AT does not consult with its customers before implementing such a change and that there seems to be no one with an ounce of common sense working at AT in the design/logo division.

Linda Robinson Editors note: The Times has published correspondence from many readers lamenting the gradual loss of the well-known Howick & Eastern crimson livery, replaced by Auckland Transport’s steel blue and grey AT Metro brand being rolled out throughout the Super City.

Howick & Eastern general manager Sheryll Otway told the Times towards the end of last year that the company’s management was “nostalgic about losing the livery in the beginning”.

“We are very proud of who we are. But change is always a good thing. We had to look at our priorities and we were on the side of change.”

However, she was glad that the Howick & Eastern

team successfully negotiated with AT to have a “welcome to Howick & Eastern” sign for passengers to see as they board the bus.

“To be fair it was not a lot to ask for and AT agreed to it,” she said. “Our drivers are very loyal and passionate about the brand. It’s good for them to have the sign by the driver’s seat.”

Anthony Cross, AT’s public transport network manager said the issue of the new livery was worked through with Howick & Eastern.

“AT sees value in having a single brand for the network.

All new buses will be rolled out with the new livery.”

The livery change, he said, was about introducing an integrated public transport network.

“A good example is the London Buses, a long-standing brand. Many cities are going through the same process, for example, Perth and Sydney, Australia.

No walkway just now

Why are we even looking at this? A good question.

Terry Brown (Times, June 2) in your Feedback page asks a sensible question worthy of a sensible answer.

Unfortunately a sensible answer that justifies the proposed walkway along the Bucklands Beach waterfront makes no sense at the pre-

sent time.

Regrettably there are a number on the local board who appear to have their priorities wrong even though they have campaigned as representing the vision and voice for our community.

They fail to acknowledge that the road along the beach front (The Parade) needs fixing first to stop flooding, and repair the sea wall at Little Bucklands Beach.

There will be a significant impact with a loss of parking for beach users over summer especially at Little Bucklands Beach.

They completely ignore residents concerns at both Bucklands Beach and Little Bucklands Beach that many will lose parking outside their properties. To use safety as a driver for the proposal is fine but lower cost alternatives, such as pedestrian crossings, need to be considered.

Just think of the confusion at Bucklands Beach during high tide summer time when beach users will have to sit within the confines of the walkway braving both pedestrians and bike riders. Not a good look. So we shouldn’t be looking at a walkway at this time, but be fixing the road and looking at simple solutions to pedestrian and traffic safety issues.

Winter exhibition opening at Te Tuhi A

selection of work by international and nationally significant artists will be featured at Te Tuhi’s Winter Exhibition.

Titled The Non-Living Agent the exhibition opens this Saturday and is curated by Andrew Kennedy. It runs in association with the Auckland Festival of Photography.

Works in the exhibition blur the lines between image and presentness, and how crossing this threshold might affect everyday experiences.

Featured artworks range from the New Zealand debut of James Richards’ 2014 Turner

Home density plan research underway

nderstanding needed to increase the supply of medium-density housing (MDH) is being sought by the independent research, testing and consulting organisation BRANZ. Close to $1 million of Building Research Levy funding is being used for a programme, ‘Supporting industry to deliver medium-density housing that meets the needs of New Zealanders’.

It’s been developed with the building industry and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).

Dr Chris Litten, BRANZ general manager industry research, says the project will identify the unique challenges of MDH and explore solutions that can be consistently applied in a high-quality and cost-effective manner, suitable for the present and the future.

In New Zealand, he says, the Government and councils have proposed MDH as a solution to some of the country’s housing problems. Auckland’s Proposed Unitary Plan includes a zone called Mixed Housing Urban which is the equivalent of medium-density housing.

“Yet developers, councils and others often face difficulties when they suggest MDH or start the planning process,”

There is no agreed understanding of what MDH is and community acceptance of MDH in the neighbourhood is typically low, he says.

There is a general lack of clarity about the MDH building consent process and no clear understanding of how to build high-quality and affordable units suitable for New Zealand’s climate.

hile pets are a part of many families, a survey shows that only about 14 per cent of Auckland rental properties currently cater to families with a furry member.

With growing demand for rentals in Auckland, real estate and property management company Barfoot & Thompson is working to encourage more landlords to go pet friendly.

The company’s data shows pet-friendly rentals are receiving an average of $20.49 more a week than that of their ‘no pets’ policy neighbours.

Tenants with pets are often happy to pay a little more for a good rental home that can accommodate their pets’ needs, Helen Hodgson, the company’s property management operations manager says.

“Landlords can enjoy that little more in their bank account each week. It’s a win win.”

Data also shows that Auckland tenants with pets stay in a property an average seven months longer than tenants without pets.

“Many tenants with pets know how hard it is to find a pet-friendly property,” Ms Hodgson says. “They know they’re onto a good thing when they find one, so they stay longer. Reducing tenant turnover also saves on costs associated with moving, for both the tenants and landlords.

“To put it simply, the number of Aucklanders with pets who rent is far greater than that of rental properties that allow pets, and that’s a predicament we’re keen to help balance out.”

Depending on the property it might be worth negotiating a special carpet cleaning requirement, safeguarding the investment for future tenants.

■■ Tenants are encouraged to resolve any problems concerning pets with neighbours as soon as possible. If there is a misunderstanding about a pet’s behaviour, politely explain the situation to the neighbour as well as the landlord. If the complaint is valid, seek the help of a professional.

Decorate a rockery In horticulture, a plant is said to be variegated when its foliage displays two different colours. Using colourful foliage brings elegance and light to flowerbeds and rockeries.

With wings Waisake Naholo and Savea suffering an errorridden first half in which they fumbled, stumbled and missed tackles, the All Blacks’ backs struggled for composure.

Easily the best was first-five Aaron Cruden whose cross-kick gifted Savea with his corner try.

And it was he who set up Naholo for his first after a marvellous catch and break-out under pressure by fullback Ben Smith.

To his credit, the explosive Naholo got better as the game progressed and was rewarded with a second try.

Once again, the All Black reserves added impact coming off the bench, none better than the speedy Beauden Barrett and Ardie Savea who are outstanding game-breakers.

What would be interesting if the selectors want to gamble is to see how Barrett fares in a midfield spot where his acceleration could be devastating.

At 18, the aggressive Henderson looks set for many more epic battles against the delightful Ko and Thailand’s 20-year-old Ariya Jutanugarn, who finished third after winning her three previous tournaments.

Nice, too, to note that in defeat, our Lydia once again showed the sportsmanship worthy of a true champion in offering Henderson full-hearted praise.

inding a champion midfield combination to replace Ma’a Nonu and Conrad Smith is the toughest task the All Blacks selectors face.

That was glaringly evident in last Saturday’s Eden Park rugby test when, for an hour, Wales looked capable of a first win against New Zealand since 1953 until the hosts’ turbocharged reserves carried the team to a flattering 39-21 win.

Before that, Wales produced some grand rugby with giant right wing George North skinning Julian Savea, big Jamie Roberts dominating the midfield and fullback Liam Williams slicing through to set up a glorious try for outstanding halfback Rhys Webb.

Ryan Crotty and Malakai Fekitoa tried hard. But Crotty isn’t the powerful game-breaker that Nonu was and probably wouldn’t have got a start had inform Charlie Ngatai recovered from a lingering concussion.

Outside him, Fekitoa showed he is making progress with his ball distribution but failed to penetrate.

Hopefully, he will come up trumps in the remaining tests against the Welsh.
