AM-RAIDERS have been hitting the eastern suburbs. Police have seen “a recent upsurge in commercial burglaries known as ram raids says Inspector Ann Wilkie, prevention manager Counties Manukau East. Over the past few weeks, shopping malls, suburban shops and properties in large industrial areas have all been targeted. “Since the Queen’s Birthday weekend, there have been various commercial premises targeted ranging from stationery shops for electronics and cycling shops for push bikes. “The most common shop being targeted is liquor shops, Inspector Wilkie says. “We are looking at seven since Queen’s Birthday Friday. We don’t believe it is only one group committing them so potentially (police are) looking for a number of people. The most common type of vehicle being used are Nissans while in the past Mazdas were the vehicles of choice. “The vehicles are, on some occasions, stolen from the local area but also from other parts of Auckland, she says. “Often there is more than one stolen vehicle used – one is left at the scene while the second is used to get away with the property. ➤ Turn to Page 2
