Desperate families are turning to high-cost online loans with interest rates as high as 700%. Reporter Bridget Kelly finds the pain is even being felt locally

L Holyoake has a bone to pick. As the service manager for Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting Services, she has been watching the new trend of high interest online loans financially ruining some of the community’s most vulnerable people.

People are going online to get small loans to cover things like groceries between pay cheques, and not realising how quickly it all adds up.

“The fact is a few hundred dollars turns into several hundred, and they’re struggling to pay it back,” said Holyoake.

“I don’t want to make out the people coming here are in the wrong, because they’re not, it’s just pressures of the way life is now. People get into debt.”

The Commerce Commission is currently investigating six online high-cost short term lenders, and is urging people to consider whether the terms are reasonable before applying.

“These investigations are at various stages and they focus on compliance with the lender responsibility principles,” the Commerce Commission said.

It’s not just single mothers,

or people on the benefit getting caught out either.

Holyoake has had couples with two incomes caught out by these schemes.

There’s an array of online finance companies now, where people can hit the internet and borrow money, and although there is a responsible lending code in place, it doesn’t seem to be helping.

“It feels as if there’s not as much checking done, because people are getting loans and they can’t afford them, they can’t repay them and it’s really high interest

Pakuranga United Rugby Club Premiers took to the field decked out in pink on Saturday as part of a fundraiser for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

PURC’s Amanda Dyason said while the final amount raised was yet to be confirmed, it was expected to total around $12,000.

An auction and high tea was held before the game where last minute items included tickets to the final test between the All Blacks and British and Irish Lions at Eden Park on Saturday.

Dyason said it was a team effort with boys coming in early to help set up for the pregame events.

Pakuranga went down 26-27 to Grammar TEC after a halftime lead of 19-0.

Shingles is the condition when someone who has had chickenpox gets a similar rash as chickenpox in one side of the person’s body. It is due to the Varicella Zoster virus which travels down a nerve and presents with small vesicles/blisters along the skin area the nerve supplies.

Shingles most commonly occurs in people older than 60 but can occur in younger people and in some occasions happens as a response to the body’s immune system being stressed.

Some reports say the life-time risk is 1-in-5 people to get shingles. Usually a person has only one attack but some can have up to three separate attacks.

Before the blistering rash appears on the skin a person may experience pain, itch or tingles in the site 1-to-5 days pre-rash.

Also fever, headache and chills are common other symptoms.

Those people in contact with someone with shingles who have NOT had chickenpox could develop chickenpox from exposure to shingles. Shingles is slightly less contagious than chickenpox.

Ideally if someone has the beginnings of shingles an antiviral medication called Acyclovir can be used. The earlier this is started the better. Complications of shingles include post-herpetic neuralgia (pain) which can be managed with painrelieving medications in most instances.

There is a vaccine called Zostavax which is used in the older age group to prevent shingles and reduce the risk of postherpetic neuralgia. It apparently is most effective in the 60-69 year age group but people from 50-years old can have it. This vaccine has been used overseas since 2006.

But, he says, that would again cost the council millions of dollars.

“We are so fortunate to have been gifted this land which is an ideal legacy that we could put to good use by partly utilising it to solve the growing traffic problem. Besides, we already have five big parks in the area.”

Mr Young suggests that locals should voice their opinion and give their feedback in the questionnaire provided in the summary of the draft Howick Local Board Plan 2017.

ith mounting frustration over increasing traffic congestion, there is a dire need for a central transportation hub featuring a park and ride facility, according to Howick Local Board member Peter Young.

He believes that the only way to tackle the traffic nightmare commuter’s face driving to the city from Botany, Ormiston and East Tamaki is to provide a free facility where people can park their cars for around 10 hours and board an Express bus to the city.

Mr Young suggests that instead of spending millions of dollars on the creation of a public park and reserve on the 21 hectares bequeathed to Auckland Council, part of the Greenmount landfill could be used to create a central bus station. “This would help to ease the traffic congestion to a great extent and help people to reach their workplace or university in city-central much faster,” he says.

The now-closed Greenmount landfill on the corner of Harris and Smales Roads that was once a quarry and then a landfill is set for a major transformation into a native forest with leisure areas like a children’s play park, fitness facilities, cycling track and off leash dog area.

Auckland Council identified $9 million last year for the transformation of the volcanic cone which was bequeathed to Manukau City Council by Sarah Lushington in 1940.

“It would give people enough reason to avail (themselves) of public transport if they have a safe place to park without worrying about their cars being towed away in an hour or two from shopping malls.”

He says Greenmount is an ideal place since Ormiston Town Centre is already too crowded to afford a vast space for a park and ride. “There is

Applying for these loans seems like the easy solution for struggling families, said Holyoake.

“If people are desperate to feed families, or pay other bills and they’ve got creditors hounding them on the phone wanting to pay, then they’ll do anything.”

People assume that in an area like Howick or Pakuranga, people aren’t struggling. The deprivation index puts Howick as a three, compared to Glen Innes which is the most deprived, at 10 on the scale.

But the increasing rents in this area are driving families to desperation.

“It’s not to buy TVs and things like that; it’s to put food on the table,” said Holyoake.

“At the beginning of the year we had one family not sending their child to school because they couldn’t afford the uniforms.”

Holyoake see’s people who are stuck in a vicious cycle of debt, and sometimes she doesn’t see a way out of it for them either.

She can recall sitting at her chair going over someone’s budget and realising there was no spare expenses available to pay back anything.

When a person can’t afford their weekly loan payment, they get a dishonour fee, they

then get a dishonour fee from the bank as well, add in high interest rates to the mix and it’s a recipe for ongoing debt.

“We see people come in with large personal loans, $15,00020,000 and you’re not sure how on earth they ever got this much money loaned to them.”

Edward Recordon, Moola CEO, told the Times they were a responsible, transparent company, and that it was other non-compliant lenders that “tarnish” the rest of the industry.

They then admitted some circumstances are unforeseeable.

“Whilst we go above and beyond to ensure a customer can afford to make repayments without creating hardship, some customers’ situations do change and, unfortunately, we can’t always foresee these events,” said Recordon.

such as cell phones and internet are no longer a luxury.

Kay Read, the National Commissioner Service Delivery for WINZ , encourages those who are struggling for everyday basics to contact Work and Income first, before considering the loans with high rates.

“We have a range of assistance available and can help with a range of household expenses including food, medical, and dental needs, white ware products, glasses, and clothing,” said Read.

Holyoake does believe that Work and Income can help people with loans, but in some cases the money is taken from them later, making budgeting even harder.

“That (small loan) then gets deducted out of their benefit which means they have less money the next week,” said Holyoake.

Pakuranga and Howick Budgeting services have recently started an initiative called Moneymate in an attempt to educate the community.

It’s an eight week programme which educates people about what borrowing money involves, and how to budget and prepare for unforeseen expenses.

It starts on July 27, from 10am-12 at the Pakuranga Library building.

If you are struggling for funds, organisations like NILS, Step Up, and Nga Tangata Microfinance offer loans that are low interest, or interest free.

mile at the students when they come in; ask them how their weekend was and be more engaging and develop a deeper appreciation for performing arts.

These are some of the guidelines Year 13 student Camron Smith put to staff when she was principal for the day at Pakuranga College.

Camron traded seats with school principal Michael Williams who attended classes.

Monday morning for the feisty 17-year-old student was packed with a line-up of meetings, conducting the school assembly and even fitting in an interview the Times.

“I was in school by 7.40am, an hour before everyone,” says the youngster.

“I had meetings with the deputy principals and other staff on what lessons to take.

“I had a staff briefing at 8:15am where I told staff that I’d like for them, for one day, to focus on producing a more engaging classroom environment working on the positive student-teacher relationships as I said ‘After four and a half years of extensive research having a teacher that you feel genuinely cares about you and your progress boosts one’s self

esteem and motivation to work harder.’

Camron suggested more activities so that the students were more awake in the morning. “We are half way through the year and it’s cold and gloomy, making it difficult for students to focus.”

She says planning the school assembly involved three meetings with head students and Mr Williams.

“At the assembly, the Year 10 leaders spoke as head students. However, we finished earlier than usual and had some time on our hands but we managed,” she laughs.

She noticed that Mr Williams, as a student, didn’t quite

start his day on the right foot.

“He did a bit of skipping as warm-up for the drama class and hurt a muscle.”

She says she enjoyed handing out certificates to students during the day and sitting in at the back of the classroom to do some observation.

“I will be sitting in a Year 12 Maths class to give feedback on how new teachers interact with students.”

One-on-one with deputy principals and the appraiser from the Board of Trustees who reminds the principal of the school goals, makes an inquiry and writes a report at the end of the year was all a part of the day’s job.

“I also had these Year 10 art students come up to me saying ‘Hi miss, do you know what a ‘dab’ is?’ And I thought gosh do I really look that old!

“So after telling them I was a student, and I was the acting principal for the day, they photographed me doing a ‘dab’... that was probably the funniest part of the day, junior students not recognising that I was actually a student at the school and calling me ‘Miss’” she laughs.

“I have a deeper appreciation for the principal and his job because it is not an easy one.”

Agnew a finalist for junior fiction award

The judges for the Esther Glen Award include convener Pam Jones, education lecturer Trish Brooking, author Ben Brown, reviewer and promoter Sarah Forster, WORD director Rachael King and English Professor Martin Salisbury.

“We’re pleased to see these books feature an equal mix of strong male and female characters from different races, ethnicities and backgrounds,” said the judges.

She will be competing for the award with Joy Cowley, Tania Roxborogh, Des Hunt, and Julie Lamb.

The winner will be announced on Monday August 14 in Wellington.

Agnew is also chairperson for Storylines writing workshops for aspiring writers.

eonie Agnew is a finalist for the Esther Glen Award for Junior Fiction for her latest book The Impossible Boy. The story is about sixyear old Benjamin who is an orphan in a war-torn country, told from the point of view of his imaginary friend Vincent.

Leonie is surprised and grateful for her position as a finalist, a place she never would have imagined herself in years ago.

“If you told me I’d be a published author I’d be pleased, I wouldn’t believe you,” said Leonie.

She has been writing since she was a child, and remembers starting The Impossible Boy years ago.

She was upset about going to church on Christmas Eve with her parents, so she made a deal.

“In return (for going) I wanted a good idea for a story, the next day I had the idea.”

She also credits watching Peter Pan, and a movie based in Beirut before that evening for her inspiration.

The team from PDP Denture Studio at Edgewater Drive were celebrating the America’s Cup win when the Times photographer walked into the studio, on the day the jubilant Team NZ did Kiwis proud.

Founder and award-winning clinical dental technician Leah Taylor remembers how exactly four years ago when they had just moved into the premise at Edgewater Drive, a lot of patients would come in early to watch America’s Cup in the waiting room.

There is a distinct sense of déjà vu as she recalls how the excitement of last week mirrored that of the crowd cheering on the yachtsmen so close to victory.

But now, just as the City of Sails readies itself for the Auld Mug, the team at PDP Denture Studio is embarking on a new chapter.

“Auckland Transport has now purchased our building and we are currently looking for new premises,” says Leah. “Naturally, we’ll keep our regular clients well-informed of our next move.”

Supporting this change is Penny Hood, a new part-time receptionist who comes with a wealth of knowledge.

“Penny was a dental assistant for

many years at Fraser Smith Lowe Dentists in Pakuranga. She is also trained as an orthodontist dental assistant,” says Leah.

With an eye for the best in the industry, Leah is one of two clinical dental technology practitioners in the country to have been selected for Otago University’s postgraduate and undergraduate accreditation panel.

Meanwhile, it’s a busy time coming up for Leah as September marks her advancement from Vice President to President of the New Zealand Institute of Dental Technologists (NZIDT), a national body representing highly skilled professionals who specialise in the design, construction, repair and adjustment of a wide range of dental technologies.

Changing lives of victims of crime

ngry, shocked, scared, emotionally disturbed and bewildered.

These are just some of the emotions children experience as they watch a parent being arrested.

Being witness to a parent being handcuffed is traumatic.

The effect of imprisonment can be a long-lasting one, leaving children of prisoners alienated and stigmatised.

They are the forgotten people, the invisible victims of crime.

Research shows that children of prisoners are about nine times more likely than other children to be imprisoned later in life as they find themselves in a situation they didn’t choose—and yet have to face a life sentence of social deprivation.

Helping to bring about stability into the lives of most vulnerable children from five-to-17 years of age through a one-on-one mentoring programme is Pillars—a non-government, national organisation that provides specialised support for children and families of prisoners.

Recently recruited for voluntary mentorship, Whitford resident Rachel Peeters says that while the screening process to match her with a child took almost a year, the philosophy of helping appealed to her.

“We are not social workers to fix things but are there to offer friendship,” she says.

dren whose parents are in prison, gave me an opportunity to do something I am genuinely interested in.”

The young family lawyer, also a former promoter of World Vision, says she has always been drawn towards reaching out and has done her bit of mentoring at the church and with another organisation in South Auckland.

The 25-year-old first heard about the charity in law school when one of her friends was doing a research paper on Pillars. Rachel felt her calling when she later saw it on her Facebook feed.

The idea of being

a positive role model and changing the narrative of a child’s story is something Rachel feels passionately about. “I have been matched with a 12-year-old girl. The first time we met, I took her to the zoo since she loves animals,” she says.

“She wants to open an animal shelter when she grows up.

“The second time we went tenpin bowling.

She was good at it and won a soft toy.

“I want her to have a sense of self efficacy and gradually develop an attitude of ‘I can back myself’.”

Pillars, says that the family’s response to Rachel has been very encouraging.

“They said that things changed the day the 12-year-old met her mentor. Rachel is very special,” she says as she gives examples of other successful stories. “At any given time, there are around 20,000 Kiwi at-risk kids that have their parents in prison; out of which 5000 are in South Auckland alone.”

Mentors bring more goodness, fairness and stability into families, says the 30-year-old who believes that it requires a lot of courage and commitment for everyone to come to the table.

Mentors need to commit for at least a year with fortnightly meetings.

“They should be fun loving, flexible, have a driver’s licence and create an engaging space for the child they are mentoring.

I

t takes a lot for a vocal performance to give me goosebumps - and yet it happened several times over during Harlequin Musical Theatre’s production of Bonnie and Clyde.

A time-honoured classic, the musical explores the daring adventures of the real Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow whose thirst for fame and excitement led to them becoming two of America’s most notorious outlaws at the height of the Great Depression.

The show, directed by Dan Chasemore, begins with a young Bonnie Parker (Samara Bayliss) and a young Clyde Barrow (Tim Cloves) singing an impressive rendition of Picture Show.

The two do a fantastic job of setting the scene before making way for Keith Marr and Nicolette Nes to take over as the present day Bonnie and Clyde - in my opinion, both perfect casting choices.

Nicolette was a standout performer from the first note and as the show progressed, created some incredible harmonies with Keith who also held a strong stage presence and wide vocal range.

The show, although chronicling a dark criminal journey, is sprinkled with comic relief moments throughout the show, mainly by Clyde’s outlaw brother, Buck Barrow (Brian Wolfman) whose goofy

character is contrasted nicely by his righteous wife Blanche (Katrina McConnell).

The audience is introduced to Blanche and Buck in Scene Three as Buck returns home after breaking out of jail before Blanche tells him he’ll be turning himself in the next morning to serve the rest of his sentence before starting fresh in the eyes of God. A catchy performance of You’re Going Back To Jail is the first of those well-placed comedic moments.

While a comparatively small role, I couldn’t review the show without a special mention of the preacher, played by Simon Chapman. Simon effortlessly commanded the stage with

his renditions of God’s Arms Are Always Open and Made in America - both responsible for the aforementioned goosebumps.

Blanche’s character development was executed perfectly, leading the audience from perhaps disliking her rigidness at the beginning to feeling sympathetic for her position as the show goes on, realising all she really wants is to protect the love of her life.

If you fancy taking a trip back in time to witness the iconic love story, get in quick to Harlequin Musical Theatre to catch it before it ends - Bonnie and Clyde last makes an appearance this Saturday, July 8. Don’t miss it!

Director Laurie Mills is bringing The Great Gatsby to Howick Little Theatre, from July 8 to July 29, and hopes to enrapture a new generation to the classic drama.

As the cast is mainly young, Mills says he has enjoyed imparting some knowledge on them from the past. Fashion has been a big surprise for some of the male cast members, said Mills, recounting the story of how some of them insisted their pants were too big in the legs, only to be told that was the style back in the day.

The performance, based on the 2009 Ken Duncan adaptation of the book, will use a minimalist set and involve impressive lighting and sound effects.

While adapting to a different time period may be a challenge for the youthful actors, they can rest assured in their experienced and confident director - this will be the 30th period piece Mills has directed.

He says he warms to the plays out of time and finds the task of reproducing another era and time stimulating as a director.

“It’s all about revisiting history – we are a product of all those times.”

When National came into Government in 2008 we decided we needed a way to fast-track important transport infrastructure projects. We could see that some projects needed to be constructed and built as quickly as possible, so we developed the Roads of National Significance

programme. The Waterview Tunnel, which opened to traffic on Sunday, is the biggest change to Auckland’s transport system since the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1959.

It is the final link in the $2.4b Western Ring Route – one of the Government’s seven Roads of National Significance.

The Western Ring Route is a 48 kilometre motorway alternative to State Highway 1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, bypassing the city to the west.

It will also help people get to and from the airport. It is expected to produce wider

Feedback Hats off to Grey Power

I’d like to thank local Grey Power members who manned an information stand at the Howick Library recently. They gave out information on how to participate in their excellent organisation and how to benefit from such schemes as cheaper electricity and the discount booklet for local firms.

I learnt that Grey Power is not only active in promoting the interests of older members of the community but all residents. An example is the successful initiative against the Auckland Council plan to install parking metres on key roads in Pakuranga and Howick. Grey Power is particularly important in an election year as it hosts speakers from all political parties and its members may question MPs on policy. This is grassroots democracy in a non-party setting, something our community can be proud of.

Excuse for more rates

My feedback to David Collings (chair of the Howick Local Board) and some of his likeminded councillors regarding the introduction of a local targeted rate for swimming pools is this – a question whether many ratepayers use the pool or is it more likely to be children and renters of which there are many.

Just don’t forget Mr Collings, renters don’t pay rates.

I am a homeowner, my rates demand is $4000 per year and then there’s water rates on top of that.

What is the Local Board thinking?

I gasped when I read that David Collings wants to make the Lloyd Elsmore Pools free to those who use them and levy every ratepayer in the Howick Ward.

As a frequent user of the pools I am more than happy to pay my way and certainly do not expect ratepayers who don’t use the pool to subsidise me. Aren’t Auckland Council rorting enough money out of ratepayers who aren’t getting full value for their rates as it is?

We have poor quality roading. Where once there were lovely gardens planted - nothing now. Rubbish lying around the streets, drains blocked with the autumn leaves and plastic because the road sweeper doesn’t come around often enough.

Water mains bursting regularly in the street where I live because they’re so old and decrepit. Pakuranga Heights in particular seems to have been forgotten because of their ‘big’ plans for the Plaza meanwhile the streets - where the people actually live - are

being left untidy and unkempt.

Are other Pakuranga residents as sick and tired of this as I am?

It seems to me that the Board would be better representing the district by lobbying for essential work and services to be maintained and for our rates to be spent wisely where they are needed most - not by levying the ratepayers for nonessentials.

The Board may say that roading, water and rubbish collection is above their jurisdiction, but the fact is, they were voted onto the Board to represent the residents and they should be lobbying council on our behalf instead of coming up with half-baked ideas to wrought more money out of ratepayers.

I want to thank Peter Young for speaking up publicly about this and making residents more aware of the thinking on this Board. As he says, you elbatius t’nsi egami fi rotceV elbissoP have to read the fine print. We all know that this is how Councils get things like this through - and the next thing you know we’re stuck with this payment and there’s not a thing we can do to change it.

Estuary Art brings out the best

By Zoe Hoeberigs, Manager Curator of Malcolm Smith Gallery / Holly Davies, Monterey Gallery Visitors to this year’s Estuary Art and Ecology Prize exhibition would have been equally as intrigued with the artworks hanging outside the gallery as those within - the intricate paper sculptures by Peter Gibson Smith.

Peter Gibson Smith is connected with the Gallery as his uncle was Malcolm Smith and, while Peter is not a local to Howick, he visited his uncle often and shares his attention to detail and inventiveness of structure.

Gibson Smith’s multi-faceted, threedimensional figures are designed from computer-generated, geometrically composed forms but crafted by hand.

They are deceptively simple and are the result of years of perfecting construction techniques and combining old and new technologies.

Gibson Smith’s work is incredibly varied (not just paper sculptures) and he doesn’t limit himself to one material or method of creating – rather, his practice is process driven where mediums and techniques are inseparable from the ideas.

His works are laborious, intense and painstakingly difficult to make - but he wouldn’t have it any other way. He says: “Art offers an alternative perspective, a resistance to the dehumanising effects of materialism. In short, it makes life tolerable. It’s impossible for me to say

Meanwhile, Monterey Gallery recently closed “On The Shoulders of Giants”, a photography exhibiton as part of the Auckland Festival of Photography. Their two artists, Kristin Hatland (NZ) and John Kiely (UK) had never met prior to the exhibition opening on June 8.

Collaborating long distance over 12 months, the artists created a 22-piece collection of abstract photographs that referenced man’s destructive effect on nature during wartime and nature’s ability to adapt and endure; a pendulum of creation and destruction.

Audiences were pleasantly surprised that only two works in the collection had been digitally altered, with all other effects taking place in camera as the artists relied on the elements of their natural surroundings. The works were small and framed, mostly black and white, dream-like, and simultaneously seemed romantic and pensive as they tackled the idea of man’s footprint on earth.

On now at Monterey Gallery is an exhibition of new oil paintings by Dalene Meiring, “Revisted” opened on Thursday, June 29 and runs until July 14.

hinese musician William Yu has found his magical place surrounded by a plethora of traditional instruments in the new premises he and his wife Tanya Li have turned into a musical emporium in Pakuranga Road.

In fact, he says: I don’t want to go home some times because I enjoy the environment so much”.

The two professional musicians came to Auckland from China in 2004 and opened their first music shop on the corner of Market Road and Great South Road – joining local musical specialists Lewis Eady who operated their business across the road.

Mr Yu is an exponent of the yangquin, a Chinese hammered dulcimer and Ms Li, the erhu, a two-stringed Chinese lute. They are high profile musicians, called upon by a variety of organisations from the APO (Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra) to the Wellington Jazz Music Festival in 2006. They have made recordings contributing a special Chinese flavour, for example for the Murray McNabb Group’s Astral Surfers CD and as part of the New Fusion Orchestra which involves eight soloists

dedicated to revitalising traditional Chinese folk music in a fusion of Eastern and Western forms.

Five-and-a-half years ago, they made their first home in Reeves Road, Pakuranga, and became enamoured with the area. Three months ago they were delighted to find their current premises sandwiched between St Mark’s Catholic Church and St Kentigern College on the other side – plenty of scope to make happy music without disturbing neighbours. “We would like to do small concerts here at our studio with teachers and students, mixing up the Chinese instruments with piano,” he says.

As well as offering a full array of instruments for sale, Mr Yu is also a piano tuner.

“I am a person who takes great enjoyment being this close to the instruments here,” he says. “I can tune pianos, teach and practice my own music all from this base.

“It’s what I enjoy and it makes our lives very colourful.”

Values steady, sales volumes plummet T

he latest monthly QV House Price Index shows nationwide residential property values for June increased 8.1 per cent over the past year which is the slowest annual rate since March 2015.

Values rose by 1.2 per cent over the past three months and the nationwide average value is now $639,051 which is 54.2 per cent above the previous market peak of late 2007. When adjusted for inflation the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 5.9 per cent and values are now 28.8 per cent above the 2007 peak. Residential property values across the Auckland Region increased 7.2 per cent year on year which is the slowest annual rate of growth seen since September 2012.

Quarterly value growth has plateaued at 0.0 per cent over the past three months. The average value for the Auckland Region is now $1,045,059 and values are now on average 91.2 per cent higher than the

previous peak of 2007. When adjusted for inflation values rose 4.9 per cent over the past year and are 59.6 per cent above the 2007 peak.

QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush said, “Values in the Auckland market continue to hold steady with the average value across the region remaining at just over $1 million dollars.”

“However, sales volumes in the Super City have plummeted to 30.0 per cent lower than they were this time last year as high prices coupled with banks’ stricter lending criteria are making it increasingly difficult for anyone but cash buyers or those with higher levels of equity to buy property.”

“It has also become much more difficult for developers to gain finance to build new homes, which is now leading to a slow-down in building activity in the market.”

“The CoreLogic Buyer classification data shows the share

of sales to all buyers requiring a mortgage has dropped and the share of sales to cash buyers remains steady.”

“Meanwhile, in the other main centres values are now rising again in Hamilton and Tauranga after decreasing earlier in the year.”

“A slow-down in value growth in the Wellington market is now more evident in the QV House Price Index data and Porirua a previous hot spot has seen values decrease over the past quarter.”

“The Christchurch market is flat, with some areas seeing a slight decrease in values over the past quarter, while values continue to rise in a relatively buoyant Dunedin market.”

“Values in regional centres such as the Kaipara District north of Auckland, the Hawkes Bay, Nelson and the Tasman District are now seeing stronger value growth than the main centres as buyers look to the regions in search of more affordable homes.”

He says that there are three compelling reasons in favour of Government and Council support – and that all of these provided for a longer term payoff from the event. “In the same way that the last Americas Cup, in Auckland, led to the development of the stunning Auckland Viaduct - hosting the event in 2021 will provide a major impetus to the development of new infrastructure on Auckland’s waterfront.”

Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church has urged caution around expectations of an ‘economic bonanza’ fuelled by the hosting of the next Americas Cup regatta which is expected to take place in 2021.

Mr Church says that he absolutely supports Government and Council investment in the next Americas Cup Challenge – but says that expectations of short term economic gain are already being hyped to unrealistic proportions that are almost certain to end with disappointment.

A post on the local community Facebook group brought Nic’s noble actions to light where a

number of comments were left by people impressed by his good sportsmanship.

Somerville Intermediate Principal David Ellery said Nic had been training for cross country and wanted to do well which made his actions even more impressive.

“I didn’t mind because I was helping someone so I didn’t really mind stopping,” said Nic. Mr Ellery said he was very proud of Nic’s actions.

“We talk a lot about this sort of stuff – the Somerville attitude, helping others and service...we talk a lot about helping others at school so this is a real life example of what it is we talk about.”

Prems coach Pita Alatini is philosophical about the result. “Yes, so close but yet so far,” he said.

“With the occasion of playing for breast cancer, the boys were excited to play their part.

“They did for the first 40 minutes. We scored some outstanding tries and the lads were on fire.”

But the prems couldn’t match that insensity in the second half.

“Grammar Tec came back strong and we seemed to fold by making basic errors and ultimately losing the game,” he said.

“Our top four placing aspirations are gone but we still have a lot to play for and none bigger than personal pride.”
