aleb Kendall’s friends and family thought a P lab caused the fire which razed their garage and destroyed a car. Kendall and his girlfriend and another couple live in a flat adjoining the garage on Latham Avenue, Pakuranga. He and his flatmates are struggling now as they had no car or contents insurance and there were items stored in the garage, including a family member’s ashes. The Fire Service had five appliances attend the blaze at around 2pm last Thursday. A large number of police officers as well as one ambulance unit were also at the scene. There was also an unusual number of media there, possibly
because several explosions had been heard at the fire site. One person suffered moderate injuries. Senior station officer Stuart Millar said at the scene the explosions were likely to have been caused by the car’s tyres or the structure’s fibrolite cladding. The fire service is investigating the cause of the blaze. Kendall and his mates – aged 18 to 20 and former Macleans College students – have only lived at the property three months and it is their first flatting experience. “The police haven’t told us anything conclusive yet but there was a dodgy power box on the wall in the garage that our electrician friend told us from day one was unsafe,” Kendall said. The loss of the car is a huge blow. It belonged to his flat mate
and best friend Billie. “It was an old school MKI Golf Volkswagen, his pride and joy that he’d been working on for about two years and saved up for since he was 15,” said Kendall. “Not only was it his hobby, but it was his savings. “He had posted the car up for sale the night before. “Also that was where he stored his stuff as we were not fully unpacked and most of his clothes are gone and tools, not to mention the priceless things like his grandfather’s ashes and family memories. “Sadly, we have no house insurance, no car insurance, I guess we didn’t expect this to happen.” As to speculation there was a clandestine P lab in there, particularly with the explosions, Kendall
takes the finger-pointing on the chin. “It was nice to see everyone helping out and showing their support...our neighbours are absolutely fantastic but my parents and friends asking me if I had a P lab in my garage was definitely disconcerting,” he said. “The fireman said the loud bangs were most likely the tyres of the car. “People go straight to P lab because of the area but, really, our neighbours are lovely and we just can’t afford to live somewhere nicer. “No one’s on the benefit either. We all have jobs. We are still without power or money – we are struggling to figure out where we should go from here. “No one has contacted us.”
