The gridconnected solar PV (photovoltaic) system produced an average daily 14.8 kilowatt hours in February, but the Runcimans only used 9.9kW hours on average. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; JP Singh and his business partner Kuljet Singh announced they would restore the burnt-out, historic Guy Homestead in Ti Rakau Drive and convert it into a childcare centre. They paid close to the $3.5 million asking price for the property and hopes were high that in 12-15 months children would enter the doors of the new Piccolo Park Family Learning Centre. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; HOWICK College planned for a multimillion-dollar makeover to the collegeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sporting facilities. The teenager was travelling west along Stancombe Road when he swerved to avoid a Honda motor vehicle turning left out of Topland Drive. He fell from the Ducati motorbike and slid into the path of an oncoming Holden Colorado ute, dying at the scene from serious injuries to his upper body.

He shared ribbon-cutting duties with Geraint Martin and Dr Lee Mathias, the Counties Manukau Health chief executive and chairwoman respectively; and Mrs Margaret Gray and Dr Harley Gray, who the new building was named after. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; BEING content and taking things as they come was a life formula for Hazel Coward who turned 100. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m quite happy,â&#x20AC;? she said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably why Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve lived so long. The Howick RSA executive committee member was due to speak about Private Crawfordâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s military service at the 6am Anzac Day dawn service on Stockade Hill. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; JOSHUA Cloke, an Elim Christian

College year 13 student, wrote about the mounted troops of the Imperial Camel Corps Brigade in Egypt during World War I. The image of the desert â&#x20AC;&#x201C; barren, lonely â&#x20AC;&#x201C; through which the mounted brigade struggled along was almost comedic as they stopped and lurched, stripped of all decorum â&#x20AC;&#x201C; travelling atop lumbering camels.

Yet, this image took a deserved place among those of New Zealanders at war, he wrote. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; VETERAN broadcaster Bill Mudgway sheeted his start on the airwaves back to service in the Pacific during World War II, when he was in the Royal NZ Air Force participating in the Allied campaign on New Britain Island, New Guinea. It was there that his wrestling commentating career was born, but his radio commentary on the base was all fictitious. When Mr Mudgway returned to his home, the renowned wrestling commentator, Gordon Hutter, was told of the imaginary broadcasts. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He said, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;be at the town hall at 8pm tonightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and from there on all hell broke loose,â&#x20AC;?

Mr Mudgway said. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; HOWICK RSA president Mike Cole was delighted with the success of Anzac Day, saying the numbers of citizens who came out in large numbers at the dawn and civic service parades at Stockade Hill on Anzac Day were as big as any he had seen. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; THE winner of TV Oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s MasterChef NZ in 2011, Nadia Lim, was the headlining act for a fundraiser hoping to help cure diabetes. The event was organised by the Pakuranga Rotary Club, with proceeds going to the Spinal Cord Society. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; WAKAARANGA School celebrated after winning an award in the Eye on Nature competition. The schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clay totem poles took out the top prize in the primary schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s division of the contestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sculpture section of the environmental education event hosted by the Manukau Beautification Charitable Trust.

■■ A LIQUOR store owner attacked during a violent robbery lost consciousness before coming to and phoning police on 111. The 28-yearold was the sole staff member on duty at the Ti Rakau Liquor shop in Pakuranga when a group of four male teenagers entered the business.

When one of the teens picked up alcohol and tried to leave, he was stopped by the owner who was then attacked from behind by all four males.

It agreed to reallocate $132,500 from its discretionary fund on the condition that the Somerville Foundation made a matching financial contribution. The foundation said it supported in principle supporting half the $265,000 initial design stage costs, and would consider funding some of the capital works once detail was known about the proposed project and its extent.

■■ ONE of Aotearoa’s greatest cycling champions was about to embark on a bike ride with a passion, as he and a team of five others got set to pedal to raise funds for women and children trafficked into the global sex industry. Seventy-seven-year-old Warwick Dalton put together the relay team to take part in TEAR Fund’s annual 20-kilometre Poverty Cycle Challenge.

■■ SCHOOL pupils avoiding class without good reason were no longer welcome at East Auckland’s shopping centres. An initiative by Howick Police and the Auckland Council aimed to make it difficult for school students to spend time hanging out at their local shops.

■■ PART of East Auckland’s landscape was transformed into a poignant field of remembrance to mark the day a century ago on which New Zealand entered World War I. Howick RSA president Mike Cole organised a public commemoration to recognise the historic anniversary at Stockade Hill.

In the wake of the ethnic cleansing of 1.7 million Poles from their homes in Eastern Poland to forced labour camps throughout Siberia at the start of World War II, the children, including John Roy, and 102 guardians eventually arrived in Wellington on the United States troopship, the General Randall. They were transported by rail to Pahiatua, Wairarapa, and then by 33 army trucks to an old internment camp to become known as the Polish Children’s Camp. Ellen Roy-Wojciechowski returned to Pahiatua and met local children who had joined with the Polish Heritage Trust Museum (PHTM) in Howick to decorate a ‘70th Wycinanki rooster’ cut-out outline for a card to send to the refugee children.

Looking back at 2014 December

â&#x2013; â&#x2013; LEGISLATION came into effect, lowering the amount of alcohol people aged 20 or older could consume before driving. The new limit fell from 400 micrograms (mcg) of alcohol per litre of breath to 250mcg. The blood alcohol limit fell from 80 milligrams (mg) of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood to 50mg. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; THE Howick community went on jubilant display as 60 groups proudly marched in the Howick Santa Parade and led in Santa Claus to herald the beginning of the Christmas season.

Moving the event to Sunday afternoon from Saturday morning was a resounding success. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; PAKURANGA Vet Clinic owner Sasha Nowell got first-hand experience of the trauma caused when a beloved pet is attacked with a firearm.

Through her work, she had attended to and operated on a number of cats and dogs that had been victims of shooting incidents, and witnessed the pain inflicted on the animals. But after her one-year-old Burmese cat Snowball was shot in the leg near the Nowellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s home in Botany, she personally related to the suffering their owners go through. â&#x2013; â&#x2013; COUNTIES Manukau East Police established a burglary action team in an effort to make a dent in rising crime statistics. Burglaries increased by more than 50 per cent in October compared with the same period in 2013.
