The Surf Life Saving Northern Regions City Nippers programmes have come to town.

They consist of five fun-filled two hour sessions for children aged 5-11.

Run by qualified lifeguards, the children are taught fundamental water safety skills, they build their confidence in the water and learn how to enjoy New Zealand’s favourite playground safely.

Activities include wading and duck diving, body boarding, swimming around buoys, beach games, theory sessions around surf safety, how to be sun smart, rips and waves.

There is an upcoming course starting on February 12 running for five consecutive Sundays from 12:30–2:30pm. The cost for five sessions is $105.50 (rash shirt and beanie provided).

he Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (AMETI) Eastern Busway project will soon carry out a series of geotechnical and pavement investigations along and around Lagoon Drive, extending from the Panmure roundabout to the eastern side of Panmure Bridge.

Project director Stephen Burris said geotechnical investigations will be carried out to obtain information on the physical properties of the ground conditions in the Panmure area in order to complete the detailed design of the proposed scheme.

“It is standard industry practice to do so before starting any major construction work,” he said.

We also need to gather information on the structure of the existing road pavement and the

location of underground services.

“This information is essential to ensure that the detailed design can be constructed in a way that makes best use of existing assets.”

The investigation work is generally expected to take place between 8am to 5 pm (beginning yesterday) and will take up to six weeks to complete depending on weather and underground conditions. Work may also be carried out at night and/or on Saturdays if necessary.

The geotechnical investigations will mainly be undertaken outside the road corridor and will involve the use of a small drill rig which may generate some noise.

Some locations for the pavement and services investigation work will require a traffic management plan and these works

are planned to be undertaken between 9am and 3.30pm.

The AMETI Eastern Busway programme is a group of projects in south east Auckland which will improve transport choices and connections in the area. Stage 1 saw the construction of the new Panmure Station, three new bridges, Te Horeta Road and a tunnel. The next stage will see the construction of the Panmure to Pakuranga section of the Eastern Busway.

Auckland Transport has lodged a Notice of Requirement with Auckland Council to protect the route between Panmure and Pakuranga and has asked the council to publicly notify the project.

our neighbours are your first relatives. That’s what my dad used to tell me,” says by-election candidate Nivedita Sharma Vij. It’s a sentiment she does her best to live by, and has now become the driving force behind her campaign to be the newest elected member of the Howick Local Board for the Botany subdivision.

A New Zealand-registered nutritionist by profession, Mrs Sharma Vij loves to run nutrition consultations, diabetes prevention and management workshops, quizzes and cooking demonstrations.

The 42-year-old was appointed a Justice of the Peace in May 2015, and currently fulfils her role working Tuesday evenings at the Ormiston College Service Desk and Thursday evenings at the Botany Library Service Desk.

She’s the only by-election candidate with no billboards on display, citing the importance of road safety as her primary reason.

No billboard, no reason to take your eyes off the road, she says.

Following the loss of her 16-yearold daughter, Mrs Sharma Vij decided to put her name forward for the position, to carry forward

her legacy, and honour the wishes of her daughter.

“My daughter had always been an inspiration,” she says, “and encouraged me to hold a public office so I could promote fairness and accountability for all residents of the community.”

Despite the recent tragedy, Mrs Sharma Vij says she feels wellplaced to accept the responsibility that the position entails.

The Botany resident moved to New Zealand from India in 2002, and took up a job working at McDonald’s for three weeks to improve her English dialect and pronunciation before interning at Middlemore Hospital and pursuing her dream to work in the health sector.

Remuera resident Kuan Yap is one of seven candidates stepping up to contest the open seat on the Howick Local Board for the Botany subdivision by-election, after a friend suggested he should put his name forward.

Born in Malaysia, the 59-year-old moved to New Zealand in 1988, and took up a voluntary position as a Chinese Telephone Counsellor with Lifeline.

“When I first moved here, I noticed quite a few people were lonely, and struggling, so when I saw the advertisement for Chinese Lifeline phone operators in the paper, I decided to give it a go.”

“If you’re in a position or have a platform, you’re there to serve,” she says, “so it’s not about doing what matters to me personally. It’s about what matters to our community, and to our people. People are part of community.”

She does have a few ideas up her sleeve, though.

Mrs Sharma Vij wants to see better transportation solutions for East Auckland, and good-quality public facilities on offer for the community.

She wants to make services people-centred, and put her Accredited Commission of Financial Literacy knowledge to use by examining existing policies, to assess whether they are functional for today, and more importantly, for tomorrow.

Mostly, she’s ready to listen, with high hopes the community she loves to serve is ready to talk – and no doubt, to vote.

“It comes down to the importance of connecting with people... appreciating the good times, and walking with them through the problems they face with a solutionbased approach. If we can do that, we’ll be alright.”

Mr Yap says he would love to see the addition of a swimming pool in Botany, a digital technology library in Ormiston, an international stage for performers, and a community hall, or meeting place for all nationalities and religions.

“People want places to go and activities to do. We live in a multicultural area, and we need facilities that are comfortable for everyone.

“That’s one of the reasons I want to run. Botany is a newfound area. It’s not fully established, and with all the new housing developments going up, there’s still a lot that needs to improve. I can help with that.”

His colleagues at Refugees as Survivors NZ (RASNZ) are devastated.

RASNZ chief executive officer, Dr Ann Hood, said the organisation is deeply saddened to hear of Mr Thanabalasingham’s death.

“Kailesh’s life encapsulates the spirit of what it means to be a refugee.

He arrived in New Zealand with nothing.

Within just a few years, he

created a safe place for his family to grow up, built a very successful career and worked tirelessly to support his own community and new refugee families settling in New Zealand.

“He touched the lives of so many people with his warm and sunny nature and his compassion and determination to make a difference.

New Zealand is a richer place as a result of his efforts to fos-

ter a humane and inclusive society were all people are respected and valued.”

She confirmed the Givealittle page, which was set up in support of Mr Thanabalasingham and has raised more than $83,000, will remain open.

All donations will now go into a trust for his daughter, who is currently being cared for by Mr Thanabalasingham’s sisters.

By Laura Brookes and Farida Master he fourth victim in last month’s fatal Flat Bush fire was laid to rest yesterday afternoon at the Manukau Memorial Gardens.

Refugee Council of New Zealand secretary Kaileshan “Kailesh” Thanabalasingham escaped the December 22 blaze and was being kept in an induced coma at Middlemore Hospital.

He passed away just before 7am on Friday morning due to pneumonia.

The 47-year-old escaped from his family home by jumping out of the window, onto the roof and across the neighbour’s fence but was severely burned.

His 11-year-old daughter and 69-year-old father-inlaw managed to escape.

His funeral comes 20 days after that of his son, wife and mother-in-law.

Family spokeswoman, barrister Deborah Manning, told the New Zealand Herald the family is devastated and have asked for privacy.

She said family were with Mr Thanabalasingham when he died.

The fire claimed the lives of his son Bareth Kailesh (5), wife Bhamini Theiventhiran (39) and mother-in-law Umadhevi Theiventhiran (66).

Items of clothing were stolen, but no cash was taken from the premises.

The store re-opened on Wednesday morning.

Police say the offenders left the scene in two silver vehicles, and are urging anyone with information to contact Counties Manukau Police on 261-1300.

The HRRA has lodged appeals in the Environment and High Courts against the Council in an attempt to stop changes that would allow multiple 12-metre high buildings to be established from Bleakhouse to Park Hill roads on the seaward side of Stockade Hill, blocking views over the Hauraki Gulf from Stockade Hill and Crawford Reserve.

The changes came about through the Auckland Unitary Plan.

Global recognition for young designer

By Laura Brookes He’s created artwork for the NBA’s Chicago Bulls, been commissioned by the United Nations and designed campaigns for internationallyrenowned brands.

Now, graphic designer Jeremy Kyle is adding another success to his list of artistic achievements on the world stage.

He’s just been awarded one of the top 10 international advertising and branding projects of 2016 by online marketing giant Adage for his collaboration with New York Times design department T-Brand Studios.

The compelling interactive project, Roots: A Cultural Force That Changed the Nation, was designed to promote the History Channel’s 2016 remake of the 1977 television miniseries Roots.

Based on the life of an African-American teenager brought into slavery and his family history, the show was watched by more than half of Americans who owned televisions when it first aired.

Today, the lasting impact of the mini-series is still evident in American art, culture and society.

In their commentary on the award-winning project, Adage said: “The clear and concise writing and beautiful illustrations combined with supplementary audio clips and articles makes this easily digestible, yet deep enough for readers looking to further explore the topic”.

It’s these beautiful illustrations that Jeremy was responsible for creating.

Extensive research, art direction and an ongoing conversation with T-Brand Studios senior photo editor Kathryn Roach helped along the way, but it was a hip-hop

playlist which proved to be his greatest source of visual inspiration.

“When I’m getting into the feel or mood within each of my works, I normally envelope myself in music that’s connected to the subjects I’m visually communicating,” Jeremy said.

“In this case, it was a lot of hip-hop - in particular Kendrick Lamar for the final illustration.”

Given that other winning collaborations included the likes of The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian and Amazon, it’s no surprise the 26-year-old said it was a humbling feeling to discover his project was listed among them – and he’s quick to credit his collaborators for that.

“T-Brand Studios did an amazing job pulling all the visual and textual elements together into a beautiful, elaborate and unified project,” he said.

The praise is mutual – as far as T-Brand Studios is concerned.

“We were dealing with an enormous time difference and our timeline was rather tight [but] Jeremy jumped in, feet first and hit the ground running,” said Ms Roach.

“He was a true partner, bringing our vision to life and creating beautiful illustrations which exceeded our and our client’s expectations... We were so excited to work with [him] on this project.”

Pumpkin Patch enters final phase

T

he children’s wear chain Pumpkin Patch will shut its doors for the last time in just a few weeks.

The receivers have announced the closure of further Pumpkin Patch and Charlie & Me stores in New Zealand and Australia.

A further 68 stores will close this week with the loss of up to 560 jobs. In addition, two earthquake-damaged stores that are currently closed will not be reopening.

Receiver Neale Jackson said that further closures had been signalled in late November 2016 when the decision was made to wind down the business after it failed to attract a potential buyer.

“We have successfully traded stores through the traditional holiday period and stock levels are now considerably reduced,”

Mr Jackson said.

The balance of stock will be consolidated in the remaining stores as the receivership enters its final phase.

“All Pumpkin Patch staff are aware that the business is closing down and that stores will gradually close as stock is sold,” Mr Jackson said.

Staff have been advised of impending closure dates and have access to EAP support (counselling) services. They will receive holiday pay, outstanding wages and other preferential entitlements (up to the statutory cap in NZ).

“As a result, head office staff have also been given notice that their employment will be coming to an end progressively over the coming weeks,” Mr Jackson said.

“This has been a very difficult

time for all Pumpkin Patch staff.

We acknowledge and thank them for continuing to work diligently to see the closure process through.”

The remaining 56 stores will close as and when stock is sold, through to mid-February.

Six recognised on honours list Six local figures were recognised in the New Year’s Honours list (which we have published online). Olympian and World Champion shot-putter Valerie Adams was made a Dame. Triathlete Cameron Brown, health services proponent Ranjna Patel and shareholders’ advocate Bruce Sheppard were appointed Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit, while former hockey international Katie Glynn and table tennis champion Chunli Li were made Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit. The Times will publish a profile of each recipient and feature a short Q&A over the coming weeks.

anjna Patel was awarded the ONZM for her service to health and the Indian community.

Winner of many awards including the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust Diversity Awards, Walk the Talk Award, 2014, Hall of Fame for Women Entrepreneurs, 2014 and Queen’s Service Medal, New Year 2009, the 61-year-old Pakuranga resident has been the driving force behind the expansion of Nirvana Health Group, one of New Zealand’s largest Primary Health networks, which she and her husband started as a sole GP practice in 1977.

The Nirvana Health Group now serves as an umbrella company for more than 30 medical clinics servicing 190,000 registered patients from predominantly lower socio-economic communities.

Mrs Patel has chaired the South Asian Leadership Group and is a member of the Counties Manukau South Asian Police Advisory Board, Commissioner’s Ethnic Focus Forum, the Middlemore Foundation Board, Kootuitui ki Papakura Trust, Global Women and Co.OfWomen.

She has taken an active role in early intervention for family violence prevention, working closely with New Zealand Police on a unique project called Ghandi Nivas, which offers counselling and temporary accommodation for family violence perpetrators.

She has held ministerial appointments to the national Advisory Council on the Employment of Women and the Lottery Auckland Distribution Committee. Mrs Patel is a trustee of International Swaminarayan Satsang Organisation (ISSO) and ISSO Seva, which provides programmes for seniors, youth and the community.

Q. Who was the first person you told about receiving this honour and why them?

A. I was quite surprised when I received the letter in September and didn’t tell anyone. My husband saw the letter and was absolutely delighted and happy for me.

After I accepted, it was hard to keep the secret, but we decided not to tell anyone.

Q. What does the ONZM mean to you?

A. To me personally, it is an acknowledgment for the work I do but it is shared with all the people at Nirvana Health Group and the many communities I work with; in particular the amazing people involved with Gandhi Nivas - the Sahaayta team,

A resident of Bucklands Beach for the last 30 years, he’s the founder of the New Zealand Shareholders’ Association. He was chairman of the Association until 2011, during which time it grew from an initial membership of 100 to over 1000 with six branches throughout New Zealand.

He advocated for the Association to develop financial literacy as a key objective, including the development of education courses, particularly for the elderly.

He led the campaign for financial market reform and accountability, mainly the Companies and Securities Act and the right to take an action on behalf of investors.

China beckons for entrepreneur T

he founder of the Unmask Palm Oil campaign and recent University of Auckland Business graduate Ben Dowdle has been awarded a prestigious Schwarzman Scholarship to China.

Ben, from Howick, received conjoint Bachelor of Arts and Commerce degrees this year and will complete a oneyear residential masters programme in Beijing with a focus on global leadership in the 21st century geopolitical environment. Ben is the first New Zealander to become a Schwarzman Scholar. Only 200 are awarded each year to the world’s most talented young leaders, with the aim of building stronger links between China and a rapidly changing world. At just 22, he

is already a noted social and environmental entrepreneur whose work to make labelling of palm oil mandatory throughout Australasia has garnered widespread attention and accolades.

He was named runner-up in the 2016 New Zealand Top Student awards and the EY Business Student of the Year awards. As a seasoned public speaker, Ben is particularly interested in – and skilled at - engaging with young people around social and political change issues.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to be able to pass on the lessons of leadership to a new group of our future leaders,” says Ben. Having already spent time in China and in the process of learning Mandarin, Ben says

Thrilling Timergazi shows class The 2017 Oceania Zonal Chess Championships ended quite dramatically with both 15-year-old top seeds winning in both events at the Waipuna Conference Centre.

eing vibrantly fit, healthy and sharp as a tack belies the age of a centenarian who astounds all those who meet her.

Rosemary (Rose) Boyer celebrated her 100th birthday on Sunday and a highlight was confidently striding to the front of the congregation at St Mark’s Catholic Church in Pakuranga.

Mrs Boyer revelled in the singing of Happy Birthday, and receiving a special blessing and big hug from Father Emile Frische.

“He mentioned my age and nobody could believe I was so old,” says Mrs Boyer.

“It was the highlight of my birthday and in the afternoon I had a wonderful party with my family some travelling from around New Zealand and Australia.”

Mrs Boyer now lives at Ambridge Rose Manor in Pakuranga and the staff members love her company and stories.

In 1917, John and Mary Collins welcomed Rosemary into the world at Mosman, Sydney.

When Rose was 10, the family moved to Suva in Fiji, where her father was born.

“It was the Great Depression and my father lost his job in Sydney and he went back to Fiji where he could easily get a job.”

Rose went to a Catholic convent girls’ school, St Joseph de Cluny, and there was never a family car, so the sisters walked to and from school every day.

Now, one sister who is a sprightly 97, lives at Havelock North. Their other sister died at the age of 93.

The girls’ daily chores included sweeping and dusting the house before school without any modern worksaving devices – just a broom and elbow grease.

Rose’s first job was as a bookkeeper for Sir Henry Scott, a significant political and legal identity in Fiji.

“There was a large handwritten ledger and it had to balance every month.”

The Collins sisters didn’t discover boys until they left school and Rose met her future husband at the local church

In 1942, Rose and James (Jim) Boyer married.

“I couldn’t have a bridal gown because you couldn’t get any veils or dresses during the war,” Mrs Boyer says.

There was a constant worry about a potential invasion by the Japanese and when an attack was suspected, Mrs Boyer rushed to put the company’s precious books in the safe. The couple had their first child in 1943, a baby girl Mary, who died at five weeks.

They had four more children and it was tough for mums then with nappies washed with scrubbing brushes and wash boards, which demanded a daily 5am start.

Mr Boyer worked in a wellknown grocery business, Burns Philp and supplied raw ingredients for Mrs Boyer’s Christmas cake business.

Annually, she started the mammoth baking operation in September and the small home kitchen oven could only handle one to two cakes at a time.

Asbestos mats were in the bottom of every cake tin and not one ever burned.

In the last year of production, Mrs Boyer made 1100 cakes that were sold through her husband’s shop.

In 1959, after several years of managing Fiji’s Sigatoka hotel, the family moved to New Zea-

land for the boys’ schooling.

The Boyers bought the dairy across the road from Otahuhu College and they regularly sold super-thick milkshakes to a young David Lange who attended the school.

They owned the dairy for 18 years until Mr Boyer died in 1977 and then Mrs Boyer lived with family in various locations throughout the Auckland region.

At the age of 60, she surprised her family by taking driving lessons and obtaining her first driver’s licence.

In 2002, she moved with her daughter to Abercrombie Street, Howick, and at age 95, Mrs Boyer moved into Ambridge Rose Manor.

Her weekly routine includes shopping, library trips, dining at restaurants and cafés with her family, and attending St Mark’s Catholic Church.

At her 100th birthday party the family celebrated her impressive age and accomplishment of five children, 11 grandchildren, 36 greatgrandchildren and three greatgreat grandchildren.

Messages from Queen Elizabeth II, New Zealand’s Governor General and various politicians were well-received.

Mrs Boyer is still waiting for a card from the Prime Minister but maybe he can be forgiven as he only started his new job just before Christmas.

Car collects a little damage during storm My grand-daughter Lucy Modricker’s new tramp blew over the fence and landed on her dad Mark’s new car during the storm on Saturday night.

Neighbours on Bleakhouse Road had to help lift it off his car and tie it down overnight.

His car has a broken windscreen and damage to

the roof and bonnet.

The tramp had a couple of broken poles. It’s a very strong tramp. It had to be dismantled to get back over the fence.

It was very lucky it was wedged over the car as it could have damaged the house next door.

I am an early morning walker and just about every day I see rubbish piled up against the clothing collection bin outside the Pakuranga Kindergarten in Reeves Road.

Pakuranga hosts NRL Nines teams P

akuranga Rugby League Club will be hosting three NRL Nines teams at its home ground next week.

The Sydney Roosters, Manly Sea Eagles and CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs will be at Ti Rakau Park on February 2 from 5pm-8pm.

There are 16 teams taking part in the Downer NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park on February 4 and 5.

Pakuranga Rugby League Club’s Rawinia Mana said hosting the teams is an “awe-

some opportunity” for the club.

She said it is the club’s third year hosting but its first time having three NRL teams visit.

Pakuranga Rugby League Club will work with neighbouring league clubs – Otahuhu, Howick, Ellerslie and Mount Wellington – on the day. “All clubs have been given the opportunity to have a registration tent, sell merchandise and a food stall each to help kick off the fundraising for their clubs,” Mana said.

“We just want to make this a community event that can be shared by everyone.”

The Roosters will be at Ti Rakau Park from 5pm-6pm, the Sea Eagles from 6.30pm7.15pm, and the Bulldogs from 7.15pm-8pm.

Pakuranga Rugby League Club is expecting a great turnout from local fans and players and so there will be higher traffic levels, busier public transport and more pedestrians in the area before and after the event.

The Women’s Street Smart self-defence workshop will be coming to Beachlands this March, offering a free weekend workshop for females ages 13 and older.

The hands-on workshop, held March 18-19 at the Te Puru Community Centre’s downstairs studio, will focus on teaching females how to deal with the most common types of physical attacks, building up to rape defence and scenario drills.

Lead instructor Charlie Riley said it is important people are aware of how to defend themselves after awareness, avoidance and de-escalation strategies have failed.

empowering for those who attend.

“The workshop can be both physically and mentally challenging to some, and quickly pulls people out of their comfort zone... [but] at the end of it, the women come away empowered and infused with self-defence techniques, and are more knowledgeable regarding their personal safety.”

Mr Riley has two free weekly classes running in Maraetai and Auckland City, with the possibility of another opening in Manurewa later this year.

What’s a quantity surveyor’s value?

P

eople building or renovating a home could save thousands of dollars – and lots of stress – by retaining a Registered Quantity Surveyor to manage the budget.

Most people who build or renovate a house are making a significant financial commitment but very few have any sort of structured cost management process in place.

As such, they are taking significant and unnecessary risks with what is often a very large sum of money and, often, they end up paying far more than they should.

Using a Registered Quantity Surveyor can prevent budget blowouts because they provide an independent and specialised review of the real build costs. This is particularly important during the design and ideas phase where changes can significantly alter budget projections.

A quantity surveyor lists and estimates the cost of each material involved in the renovation or build, from site preparation and foundations to the deck and other external works.

“Property developers in the commercial sector use quantity surveyors and know it is a wise investment in terms of accurately estimating and managing project costs,” says NZ Institute of Quantity Surveyors president, Jeremy Shearer.

“A good quantity surveyor will be just as valuable on

a residential project where budget blowouts do occur frequently – and very easily - and the results can be really problematic for the home owner.”

Unfortunately, Shearer says, most homeowners don’t understand the value a quantity surveyor can offer.

Most people believe a builder will provide an estimate of the build cost; in other words, you only pay for what you get, so investing in an independent estimate of building costs seems pointless. But investing in this process upfront can alleviate stress levels, and save time and money in the long run. By assessing a builder’s bid for a project, called a tender analysis, a quantity surveyor can help people through the process of comparing all tenders, and help people avoid paying too much for a project.

Also, quantity surveyors can negotiate with a chosen contractor on a client’s behalf.

“The analysis provides people with a useful and independent benchmark when choosing the right person for the job,” says Shearer.

“We offer advice on suitable tender processes, and which contracts are most suited to a particular situation. Not only does this help the property owner but it also alleviates stress, especially when some builders may have excluded detailed costs in their responses.”

Shearer says the residential sector can take a less formal approach to the cost management processes.

“Problems begin to develop, and the first variation of the bill appears to cost a large sum.

Education Term 1, 2017 Triathletes go well in Australia Local triathletes make their mark across the ditch in the 2017 Australian Junior Series. Over the weekend, Ainsley Thorpe (Howick), Dylan McCullough (Pakuranga) and Trent Dodds (Maraetai) competed in the second race of the series in the Gold Coast.

Ainsley dominated her U19 age group with two wins and Trent finished second overall (U19 Male).

Meanwhile, Dylan improved his race one performance (fourth-place) by two placings, which moved him into third place overall at the end of the day.

The event was an opportunity for the group of athletes to rub shoulders with other young upcoming triathletes. The Super Sprint format presented a few challenges for the group but they all came away with strong performances and podium finishes.

Ainsley and Trent were selected in the 2016 NZ Junior (U19) team to travel to the ITU World Championships in Mexico last September.

Unfortunately, a week before the team were to depart, Ainsley broke her shoulder in a training accident.

“Even though I couldn’t get on the start line, I still learned a lot by watching some of the best triathletes in the world and seeing how the races unfolded in the different age groups,” she said.

Ainsley will be preparing for more racing in March and hopes to qualify for World Champs.
