ising petrol margins have been the talk of the nation this week, and the discrepancies across East Auckland stations show some startling differences.

On January 31, prices displayed at 11 petrol stations in the Botany/ Howick area were photographed by a Times reporter, with a 22.2 cent discrepancy across the board.

Along the Howick-Pakuranga highway, all petrol stations reported a similar figure of 201.9 cents per litre for 91 octane petrol and 125.9 cents per litre of diesel.

This included BP Ridge Road, BP Highland Park, BP Pakuranga, Caltex Highland Park, Mobil Highland Park and Z Highland Park.

Approximately five kilometres away, Gull Ti Rakau Drive advertised 91 octane petrol for 179.7 cents per litre, followed by 184.9 at Caltex Meadowlands and 181.9

Highland Park resident Neil Armstrong claims the 91 octane petrol at BP Connect East Tamaki dropped even further to 169.9 cents per litre around a week ago, reaching a massive 32 cent difference from the cost of petrol along the Howick-Pakuranga highway.

“It’s not a matter of 10 cents, give or take, its 30 cents, and that’s a huge difference. It’s so far up the scale right now that it couldn’t really go any higher, and it’s unacceptable for certain stations to be creaming it.

“I honestly don’t know how they can all get the same price of petrol and advertise it so differently. You’d be more likely to win

the Lotto than to accidentally get the same price.”

Earlier this week, Energy Minister Judith Collins promised to “get to the bottom” of the issue, following a press release from the Automobile Association (AA) calling for a nationwide inquiry.

In the January 31 media release, AA spokesman Mark Stockdale said the situation was “most unusual”, confirming there was no increase in commodity prices or a drop in the exchange rate during the month.

“If anything, the retail price should have fallen [during January], not risen by five cents,” he said.

“The last time fuel company margins came close to the current level, the Government put the fuel companies on notice and asked them to justify the high margins.”

AA has called for fuel companies to give motorists an explanation for the change.

t’s the first year Colin Readings will be entering the Auckland Brit and Euro Classic Car Show, except he won’t be turning up with a car.

He’ll be showing his beloved BMW R69US motorcycle – a treasure he’s owned and looked after for the past fourteen years.

Built in 1969, the vintage shaft-drive BMW motorcycle fitted with a boxer twin engine and drum brakes is best known for its reliability.

It’s the perfect bike for long distance and high speed travel, Mr Readings says, despite the “funny kickstart” that “takes a bit of getting used to – and a certain knack for it”.

He purchased the car from his brother, who bought a total of eight BMW motorcycles while in South Africa, but started selling them off after moving to Australia.

His current bike was one of two motorcycles left in his brother’s collection when Mr Readings purchased it, and is now one of four motorbikes he owns.

The recently retired design engineer spent more than two years doing up the engine and making sure the bike was up to scratch when he first purchased it,

and now, his only concern is “keeping the dust off” – a job made easier by his decision to keep the bike off the road.

“Initially, I was going to ride it... but I just thought it was too valuable to take out on everyday roads.”

The upcoming Brit and Euro Classic Car show is an obvious exception to the rule, he says, after a friend he used to pit crew for in his racing days encouraged him to take part.

Sponsored by the Howick Local Board, as well as other commercial outlets, the non-competitive public event has 617 registered vehicles, as confirmed by chairman of the organising committee, Rev Dr Richard Waugh.

It’s a significant increase on last year’s numbers, and Rev Dr Waugh said the

large number of registrations will “ensure a memorable time”, for car and motorcycle owners, as well as East Auckland locals.

Howick Historical Village will also be hosting a Live Day on March 5, featuring entertainment, Victorian era games and activities for the whole family for a small admission charge.

Mr Readings moved to New Zealand with his family in early 1975, first settling in Upper Hutt, and then moving to Howick, where he has lived since.

He boasts an impressive family history when it comes to motorcycles and car racing, starting back in a small town in the UK where Mr Readings grew up.

In 1907, the world’s first purpose built racetrack – the Brooklands racetrack – was built in Surrey,

where Mr Readings’ father worked for famous motorist and world record holder John Cobb.

Mr Cobb set world automobile speed records in the late 1930’s and 1940’s, boasting the fastest lap record at the Brooklands race track and breaking the land speed record multiple times, reaching speeds of nearly 400 miles per hour in his piston-engined car.

“When you consider the design of those [cars] against what the aircrafts were in those days, it was spectacular,” said Mr Readings. “I was advised at an

early age, mess about with cars and that, but don’t go into the business,” he laughs. “You’ve got to bear in mind in those days the money wasn’t there... but you can understand the impact [my father’s work] had on my upbringing.

“Now, it’s ingrained in my blood.”

The 2017 Brit and Euro Classic Car Show will be held on Sunday 5 March, 10am-3pm at Lloyd Elsmore Park. Entry is free and registrations for vehicles have now closed. For more information visit www.briteurocarshow.nz.

Election debate Voting has begun for the Howick Local Board, Botany subdivision by-election.

The by-election follows the resignation of local board member Lucy Schwaner and is expected to cost up to $104,000. Tomorrow evening, the Times is hosting a debate at Botany Library, giving the seven candidates standing in the by-election a chance to discuss the issues facing the community.

Everyone is welcome at the debate, which will run from

6.30pm-7.30pm, and there will be a chance to ask questions of the candidates.

There are around 36,000 enrolled electors in the Botany subdivision – which encompasses Flat Bush, East Tamaki, East Tamaki Heights and Ormiston – including around 200 new voters who turned 18 since the main local body elections were held in October.

Voting closes at 12pm on February 17 and results will be available that afternoon.

Baker: I had to close

ayan Khadem is so angry he has been forced to close down his Bakers Delight store, he left town to calm his nerves.

After four years of struggling to meet what he claims are massive overheads, Mr Khadem last Monday closed Bakers Delight at Pakuranga Plaza, one of the country’s oldest shops in the bakery franchise.

He has levelled criticism at the franchisor, citing inaccurate sales forecasts and interference during an attempted sales process. “I bought four years ago and was promised we were going to make money. We lost money from day one,” Mr Khadem told the Times.

“I had no choice but to liquidate on Monday.”

He employed nine at the store. “(The franchisor) projected $11,000 in weekly sales.”

He said in busy spells the store would peak at $14,000 per week and, when it was quiet, $9000.

From these weekly sales though, he would cough up

10 per cent to the franchisor, 30-40 per cent for ingredients and then still had to dig deep for wages and rent.

“All this and I haven’t ever made money.”

The Bakers Delight website shows a Mt Maunganui store is up for sale for an “initial investment” of $360,000. It says average weekly sales are “in excess of $14,000”.

Mr Khadem said his store is not the first to succumb to financial pressure and listed at least three or four others which he claims folded for the same reasons.

“I’m feeling relieved it’s finally over...it has been a battle

with the franchisor,” he said.

“I had two buyers lined up last year but the franchisor... they dictated who I sold to and the price. They told me what my business was worth.”

Something was drastically wrong with the franchising model in NZ, he said, a model which could not simply be copied from the Australian marketplace where the chain originated. “It has been very difficult to work with them as in promises,” he said.

“This is my life. You walk away with nothing.”

Bakers Delight country manager Xavier Barnsley says the company is always concerned

when a franchise closes. “I understand that it’s raw.

There’s a high level of concern,” he said.

“We always try to support our franchisees.”

As to claims of interference during the sale process, he said: “We have a thorough and robust sales process we follow which takes into account the vendor’s interests, the purchaser’s interests and our interests.”

As to forecasts: “We don’t give franchisees forecasts. It’s impossible to give forecasts.”

“We are always there to support our franchisees.”

As to the future of the Pakuranga store, most of the leases are held by the franchisor.

“Essentially we’re in breach of our lease (at Pakuranga Plaza),” Mr Barnsley said.

“It’s going to be a priority (getting a new franchisee in there). Hopefully it will happen soon.”

The Times has attempted contacting the liquidator Peter Jollands of Jollands Callander several times.

Chunli Li was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to table tennis.

The 54-year-old Pakuranga resident is a world-renowned table tennis player who has represented New Zealand internationally.

Early in her career, Ms Li was a member of China’s national table tennis team and was twice a mixed doubles champion in China.

As one of New Zealand’s representatives at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, she won gold for women’s singles and silver for women’s doubles, and two bronze medals in the mixed doubles and women’s team competitions.

These are the only Commonwealth Games medals that have been awarded to New Zealand for table tennis.

She has represented New Zealand at four Olympic Games in 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Her world ranking peaked at 19 in 1998 and her career-best achievement was finishing third in the 1997 Women’s World Cup. She coached New Zealand’s chunli li national teams for the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games before coming out of retirement in 2011 to lead the New Zealand table tennis team to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

At the local level Ms Li initiated and runs a coaching programme through the Panmure YMCA for people of all ages wanting to play table tennis She was inducted into the Table Tennis New Zealand Hall of Fame

in 2014. Table Tennis New Zealand said Ms Li is a role model for success in table tennis.

“We look forward to Chunli being an important part of the New Zealand table tennis scene for years to come, particularly with the influence she has in drawing young Chinese players, and girls in particular, into table tennis.”

The Times asked Ms Li five questions this week.

Q. Who was the first person you told about receiving this honour and why them?

A: The first person I told was a Kiwi friend of mine. This is because I wanted to know more about the MNZM.

News bites Car crashes into house It was a rude awakening for some Bucklands Beach residents in the early hours of Tuesday morning when a car crashed into a house.

Two cars collided on Clovelly Road shortly after 2am, forcing one through a fence and into a house.

Three people were taken to Middlemore Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police are investigating the incident, but say no one has been charged at this stage.

Fundraiser for Krishah A fundraiser is to be held on Waitangi Day for Krishah Kaileshan, the 11-year-old girl who lost four family members in a December 22 blaze in Flat Bush.

The fixture is described as a family day out and will feature free kids’ activities, pony rides, food, live music and raffles. It is at the Old Flat Bush School Hall from 10am-3pm on Monday February 6.

A: This means my hard work is being recognised by the government. This gives me a lot of encouragement.

A: No, not really.

A: Not yet, since I was in China, but I will do something after the award ceremony.

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received and how did you follow it/take it on board?

A: My father gave me the best advice by being a role model for me. He always encouraged me to be the best, be responsible and be grateful. I have been following his advice and try my best.

Traps restoring native paradise W

e walk down a slight grassy decline, away from the house and garden and towards 4.5 acres of native bush, just as a plump kereru flies overhead, the noisy beating of its wings causing us to cast our eyes upwards and follow its flight path.

The green, bronze and white blur of the native pigeon crossing the clearing is soon replaced by several wheeling tui and as we get closer to the bush, more kereru and tui fly low above us.

The range and level of birdsong, so close to suburbia, has me in a daze and seeing the native birds flying all around us is a delight.

“Our reward is the bush and birds – seeing the growth here and the amount of birds we have coming in,” the owner of this paradise-like property says.

She’s giving a tour of her land, which sits on the remnants of the original Hunua Forest near Whitford, to the Times and Sally Barclay – a member of the Friends of Mangemangeroa (FOM) Society.

The FOM is a local, environmentally-minded group who work with Auckland Council to maintain and restore the coastal forest along the Mangemangeroa Estuary on Somerville Road in Howick.

They raise and plant between 6000-8000 plants a year in the Mangemangeroa Reserve and there are about 300 volunteers

The woman showing us around – who wants to remain anonymous – is one of 15 private landowners who Ms Barclay has recruited to help the FOM tackle the issue of possums and other pests.

“It stemmed from the fact that

there was a noticeable decline in bird song in the Reserve indicating a decline in their food, the culprits were these jolly possums,” Ms Barclay explains.

“We had carmine rata, a rare species, growing and it didn’t flower because the possums had chewed off the flowering buds.

“So we were aware that the possums were eating the flowering plants within the Reserve, which also means of course that they were going to be getting the birds eggs.”

And so a long-term community pest control project was set up by Ms Barclay.

Last year, with funding from the Howick Local Board, 15 Timms traps and five A12 selfresetting traps for possum killing – as well as $400 worth of rat bait and boxes funded by The Warehouse Botany – were issued to landowners within the Mangemangeroa Valley.

Ms Barclay says Auckland Council was setting bait once a month in the Reserve but its records showed that areas of possum invasion were not being fully addressed by the pest control programmes.

“Possums are grazers and move over considerable distances to feed,” the former high school biology teacher says.

“Thus the Friends of Mangemangeroa felt that private landowners needed to be approached to see if they would agree to set traps on their land.”

With a lot of private land around the Reserve, the FOM hope the private landowners will help control possums and other pests and monitor catch numbers, thus making it possible to know what’s happening in the area over a long period of time.

There are 15 landowners who now set and monitor traps in areas adjacent to the Reserve or on land where there is known possum and pest activity.

The landowner giving us a tour of her property, which has 4.5 acres of native bush and borders a further 5.5 acres, is clearly passionate about nature, wildlife and New Zealand.

She had been trapping possums for some time when the FOM pest control project came along, but the group has supplied her with more advanced possum traps and rat traps to continue and increase her good work.

The woman says she and her husband get “personal pleasure from doing [their] little bit to keep the bush pristine”.

She acknowledges that it is an effort – “you have to keep monitoring things” – but says the noticeable increase in birdlife and native bush re-growth shows it is working.

When the woman and her husband moved onto the property eight years ago, her two Timms traps were catching two possums a night.

Now she might go weeks without catching one, she says, and her dedicated and constant trap-setting, despite the decline in victims, means even roaming possums don’t last long on her section of land.

She proudly names and points out the various native plant species flourishing there as we climb over a fence separating the clearing and walk down through the bush.

There are five kauri trees, rewarewa, puriri, rimu, northern rata, various rare native ferns, carmine rata, cabbage trees – just to name a few.

On top of the pest trapping, the woman also plants food trees for the birds and controls invasive weed species as they pop up.

All of this has helped bring about the “reward” of increased native bush growth and resident birdlife.

She believes the kereru are nesting somewhere high in the trees and the now-familiar blur of green, bronze and white and the constant clamour of heavy wings above us as we walk through the bush suggests she is probably right.

She also says she now sees “masses” of tui and fantail and can hear morepork in the bush and in her garden all night long.

While the FOM hope to also see increased birdlife in the Mangemangeroa Reserve over time, there is a bigger objective, a more important one, to all of this pest control work.

“What grows best on the land are the native trees, we know that. We also know that the native trees act as filters to keep the water that goes

She says if you have native trees, then you have to ensure that they are able to grow and re-generate.

“That re-growth and re-generation is stopped or reduced by the introduced pests – the possum, the stoat, the rat.”

While 1080 poison has been extremely successful in killing possums in larger areas, Ms Barclay says, “there is no way we want to see 1080 put

around locally in the Howick area”.

She says there are other means of controlling possum and pest numbers and one of these is having local landowners help reduce the number of introduced pests.

We wish to thank our local wonderful firemen and ambulance men who came to our rescue on Monday, January 23 when we were trapped in a lift.

My daughter and myself, an 88-year-old lady with limited mobility, were stranded in an out-of-order lift for almost an hour.

On our way to a podiatrist appointment, the lift in Compass building in Half Moon Bay Marina suddenly stopped between floors.

We pressed the Otis emergency alarm button and only got through to an emergency phone in Sydney, Australia.

We tried to explain where we were but they said they didn’t know Auckland at all.

The residents of Westminster Flats at 690 Pakuranga Road would like to point out that the driveway through their properties and the visitors carpark at the Willoughby Ave end are part of their privately-owned homes and are not a public right of way or parking area or turning point for school drop offs.

We pay rates, water and other expenses met by larger residences in the area. We also pay for our security lights and lawn mowing etc.

There are notices at either end which are more and more often being ignored and having strangers casually walking past our doorsteps is most disconcerting.

SKIN CANCER

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in New Zealand. Our skin cancer rates are among the highest in the world. In fact, the incidence of melanoma in New Zealand and Australia is four times higher than in Canada, the US and the UK. Research suggests that 2 in 3 New Zealanders will develop a non-melanoma skin cancer during their lifetime! More than 300 New Zealanders die from skin cancer each year. Light skin type, a large number of moles and excess sun exposure (particularly episodes of sunburn) especially in childhood and adolescence, are the major predictors of skin cancer risk. According to the recent National Melanoma Summit 2011, New Zealand’s melanoma incidents are increasing and our death rate in women for 2003-2007 was 40% higher than in Australia. Our high ultraviolet (UV) levels and low ozone layers account for these staggering statistics.

There are two main types of skin cancer: melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers. Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer. It can spread rapidly and can be life-threatening if left untreated.

Melanoma starts in skin cells called melanocytes. These are the cells that make melanin, which gives skin its colour. Most melanomas are caused by exposure to UV radiation from the sun. Non-melanoma skin cancers are far more common than melanoma. However, they tend to be less serious than melanoma (as long as they are treated). The two main types are basal cell cancers and squamous cell cancers. They usually occur on areas of the skin that have been in the sun. They tend to be related to a person’s lifetime or “cumulative” exposure to UV radiation.

Get to know your skin by checking it regularly. Make sure you check your entire body. That way you can notice any changes that could mean skin cancer. If a freckle, mole or lump is changing in size, shape or colour or you have a sore that doesn’t heal, do see your doctor for a check. Skin cancer is diagnosed by physical examination and biopsy by the GP. Often photos are taken and kept in your medical records for comparison at a later time. Most treatment can also be done at the GP’s surgery.

Take good care of your largest organ – your skin from now on and keep skin cancer at bay. Also put on a hat and sunblock (sun protection factor- SPF 30 or above) before you go out to enjoy New Zealand’s natural outdoors.

“A

resounding success” was the feeling as Howickians young and old came together on Anniversary Day to enjoy the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Community picnic on Stockade Hill.

It was a time to relax under the pohutukawa trees and talk, make new friends, talk to old ones and gaze and gaze. The views were simply glorious with blue sky and a deep blue sea dotted with white yachts, contrasting with the golden colour of parched islands, but the question on everybody’s lips was - “How could anyone dream of obstructing these iconic and irreplacable views, knowing that the High Court judgment on the test case is looming very soon?”

Despite all the publicity, there was shock and horror to realise that if the council and developers have their way, every section from Bleakhouse Road to Crawford Medical Centre will be able to have two or four, 3-4 storey apartments built on it and there is even talk of 6 -7 storey apartments from there to the Catholic Church so that the whole view apart from the tops of some islands would be obliterated.

“You’re in these things to win, but I knew it was a tough race and I put it behind me,” the Northpark resident says.

“But when the by-election came along, which was very disappointing I have to say, I looked again closely at those results and there wasn’t a lot in it, numbers wise.”

And so Mr Page is standing in this month’s by-election as an independent candidate and he appears just as determined as he was leading up to the October election.

“Not to throw my hat in the second time was not an option for me – that shows how serious I am,” he says.

Mr Page is again campaigning on his strong personal connection to the Botany area and his institutional knowledge of how Auckland Council and local boards work.

He has lived in the subdivision for about 17 years and spent more than 20 years working for Manukau City Council and Auckland Council servicing parks and recreation facilities in south and east Auckland.

I hope they all enjoy themselves and the new opportunities that are in front of them. I’m sure parents will be pleased to see the school year start again too.

Evidence shows that quality of teaching and school leadership are the two most important factors in a child’s education. Our focus for the past eight years has been on improving performance across the education system to ensure every child has the opportunity to be successful.

Dare to Explore finale a big hit More than 400 children and parents came out to Lloyd Elsmore Park last week to celebrate the end of the libraries’ Dare to Explore summer reading programme.

The carnival-themed event, collaboratively hosted by the four eastern libraries (Botany, Highland Park, Pakuranga and Howick) was held on Wednesday, January 25.

It featured games, a bouncy castle, Soak the Librarian, face painting, hair art, candy floss, tattoos, a scavenger hunt, and was attended by local firefighters, police and Batman.

Eight-year-old Emily Flynn said her favourite part of the event was “probably every single bit of it”.

“I’ve seen all my best friends, and my drama friend too. Today is the first time I’ve been on a fire truck... it’s been awesome!”

Highland Park Library assistant Robyn Huggins, who was manning the obstacle course, said it was rewarding to see kids she’s taught all summer enjoying themselves at the finale event.

More than 10,500 children were enrolled for the free six-week Dare to Explore programme at libraries across Auckland, designed to combat the literacy and language loss experienced by many children over summer through a series of fun challenges and personal reading goals.

The feisty Mrs Collins was accompanied by Katrina Bungard, deputy chair of the Howick Local Board and Jackie Hui community advisor of Pakuranga Chinese Association. Ms Hui nudged the fun loving minister to share with the guests that her husband of 30 years, David Wong-Tung has Chinese heritage.

“My husband’s grandfather was Chinese,” announced Mrs Collins, making everyone feel she was one of them.

Mrs Collins told the Times later that her husband has Chinese-Samoan descent, “that’s why the Wong comes from Chinese heritage and Tung is Samoan.”

Auckland, Hamilton values ease while nearby regions see strong growth T

he latest monthly QV House Price Index shows that nationwide residential property values for January increased 13.5 per cent over the past year.

Values rose by 1.4 per cent over the past three months and the average value nationwide is $631,302. The nationwide average value is now 52.4 per cent above the previous market peak of late 2007.

When adjusted for inflation the nationwide annual increase drops slightly to 12.0 per cent and values are now 28.5 per cent above the 2007 peak.

The Auckland market has increased 12.8 per cent year on year and quarterly growth eased back to just 0.2 per cent over the past three months.

The average value for the Auckland Region is $1,047,699.

Residential property values in the wider Auckland region are now 91.7 per cent higher than the previous peak of 2007.

When adjusted for inflation values rose 11.3 per cent over the past year and are 61.6 per cent above the 2007 peak.

QV National Spokesperson Andrea Rush said, “The latest QV House Price Index figures show value growth in Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch continues to ease and in some parts of these cities quarterly value growth is now decreasing.

strong growth in places like Mangawhai now a favourite for those who are selling up and moving out of Auckland.

“Similarly the Hauraki District south of Auckland and also commuting distance to Hamilton and Tauranga accelerated 10.8 per cent over the past three months and 30.3 per cent year on year with towns like Paeroa and Ngatea in high demand from movers and investors alike.

“Values in regions near Wellington such as the Kapiti Coast, Horowhenua and the South Wairarapa have also risen between 5.0 and 7.0 per cent since Novem-

ber, as those priced out of the Wellington market look further out for affordable property.

“The MacKenzie District in the South Island has jumped 9.7 per cent since November and 26.9 per cent year on year as those priced out of the Queenstown, Wanaka and the surrounds look to places like Tekapo and Twizel for lakeside property.

“It’s possible rising mortgage interest rates and the new LVR rules will continue to constrain the rate of value growth during 2017.

“However, this will be balanced by continued record high net migration and a lack of housing supply particularly in Auckland. As well as the fact New Zealand property can be brought freehold and has fewer taxes on property compared with many other countries, meaning it remains a highly attractive investment to foreign buyers.”

QV Auckland homevalue Manager, James Steele said: “The Franklin District has seen the strongest growth in the Auckland region over the past quarter with values rising by 2.9 per cent since November as buyers look further out to find more affordable property. Places such as Waiuku, Pukekohe and coastal areas south of Clevedon are experiencing strong demand and value increases due to higher demand from investors and home buyers

alike.

“There still is a high demand in this area for new build dwellings with both land and house packages, and design and build packages happening within the new developments of Pukukohe, Patumahoe, Waiau Pa and Kingseat. There’s been a similar trend north of Auckland with the Rodney-North seeing the strongest growth in the Auckland region over the past year – up by 14.5 per cent year on year.

“This has been driven by stronger demand in places like Wellsford, Warkworth, Matakana and surrounding areas.

“However, quarterly value growth there has eased from 3.6 per cent quarterly growth last month to 1.6 per cent quarterly growth this month most likely due to the impact of the LVR restrictions.

“Meanwhile, the Waitakere city, North Shore and Manukau housing markets have been slow going with vendors having to adjust their price expectations down to sell and open home attendances have been slow from November through January.

“It appears people may be taking a wait and see approach until after Waitangi weekend when people are back to it and it appears people aren’t willing or able with new loan restrictions to pay the premiums that they were in the first half of 2016.”

Club gears up for season B

ucklands Beach Association Football Club has trials starting next week and its players and coaches have been gearing up for the upcoming season with a summer academy.

In 2016, the club appointed Munith Naidu as its new director of junior and youth coaching.

Mr Naidu has introduced coaching programmes across the grades and has recruited a team of coaches for the 2017 season.

Vice president of Bucklands Beach AFC, Andy Pullar, said for the first time the club developed and delivered an academy programme over summer.

More than 200 players took part in the 10 week programme.

“There is no rest in the footballing world, Munith and his team are now hard at work putting together a preseason academy designed to whip the kids in shape in time for the club trials,” Mr Pullar said.

Bucklands Beach AFC academy coaching staff Gemma Lewis will lead the girls youth development. Lewis played for the Welsh under 17, under 19 and senior national teams, has played for Cardiff City and Chelsea FC in the women’s English Premier League and is an Auckland Football Federation development officer.

Frank Belt played for Hull City in the English Championship and has coaching experience in the Northern League and is a current Northern Football Federation talent centre head coach.

Calvin Opperman represented New Zealand under 17 at the World Cup in Mexico and has coaching experience at university level in the United States.

Charlie Hunn has eight years coaching experience at Bucklands Beach AFC, four years as a Coerver Academy coach and was the head coach of the Howick College 1st XI 2016 champions.

Reuben Clarke is the current New Zealand under 17 goalkeeper coach, Auckland Football Federation talent centre goalkeeper coach and is charged with taking care of the goalies at Bucklands Beach AFC. This group is assisted by two longstanding club members, Gareth Martin and Richard Thompson.
