Arts programme on the move By Chris Harrowell
S
TAFF at Uxbridge, Howick’s creative centre, are determined to keep serving the public while redevelopment work is carried out at the busy community asset. The Howick Local Board received an update on the planned multi-million dollar construction overhaul of the public arts centre in Uxbridge Road at its monthly meeting last Monday. Its members passed a motion approving funding in principle for an 18-month lease for Uxbridge staff to use the former Howick Police station building at 34 Moore Street. The unoccupied Moore Street property at which many of the art centre’s activities will be temporarily based is managed by Auckland Council Property Limited (ACPL). The funding is subject to final approval by local board chairman David Collings of the lease details, which are commercially sensitive. The motion also approved the board’s spending of $20,000 toward a fit-out and associated costs to bring the Moore Street building up to the required standard. Redevelopment of the public arts centre in Uxbridge Road is a $6.4 million project identified as a key priority for the local board in its 2011 and 2014 plans. A report to the board received by its members at their recent public meeting states that the project is within budget. The two-stage construction programme is due to be completed by August, 2016. Other affected parties are the tenants of nearby Keall House, and the Uxbridge Early Learning Centre. The report details that the former is part of the redevelopment site, while the latter is adjacent to it. Council staff have engaged with Keall House’s previous tenants, who vacated the property in June last year. They’ve also been in contact with the Uxbridge Early Learning Centre to keep its staff informed of the redevelopment project to address concerns as to whether their site will be affected. Uxbridge director Vickie Bowers says she and her staff will continue to be based at the existing arts centre while the construction work is carried out.

SIGNING OFF: Howick Local Board chairman David Collings has final approval over a lease that will see activities normally run at the public arts centre in Uxbridge Times file photo Wayne Martin Road move to the disused former Howick Police station premises in Moore Street.
The centre’s classes and workshops will be moved to the Moore Street building. “We’re obviously really delighted about the redevelopment and are waiting for the final call as to when it might begin,” Ms Bowers told the Times. “It will be a challenge for us to keep our activities up and running during this time. “Some of them will continue here in Uxbridge Road and some of the classes and workshops will be run from Moore Street. “It’s fundamentally important that we keep things running throughout the redevelopment.”
Ms Bowers says the centre’s staff will keep people informed about how they can continue to access its many creative services. “We’re aiming for a full programme [to continue] at the moment. “We will stay in touch with people who have been involved with the centre and intend to keep them and others up to date with the progress.”
