to the area. “The man was spoken to throughout the evening. “A decision was made to not enter the address in order to ensure his safety and the safety of police officers at the scene. Police ordered local residents to stay indoors during the armed incident. An officer was stationed at the intersection of Eastern Beach Road, Jern Place and Vivian Wilson Drive last Monday night. He advised approaching motorists they were unable to turn right into The Esplanade. Three more police officers, one of whom was armed, were posted at the intersection of Eastern Beach Road and The Esplanade.

OLICE unable to convince an armed man to leave his Eastern Beach property eventually used tear gas to flush him out. Officers arrived at the man’s home in The Esplanade just before 1pm last Monday to talk to him about an alleged domestic incident. A Counties Manukau Police spokeswoman says the 38-year-old refused to engage with officers when they approached the property. “Because he was in possession of a firearm, the area around The Esplanade was safely cordoned and contained to ensure public safety. “The police armed offenders squad and negotiation team were deployed

A number of armed police officers were stationed in McCrystal Avenue, along with members of the St John Ambulance specialist emergency response team. After a 19-hour stand-off with the man, police fired tear gas into his house to force him to come out at about 8am last Tuesday. He was safely taken into custody. Road cordons were lifted by police when the situation was deemed safe at about 8.30am. Eastern Beach eateries remained open to diners on Monday night during the armed incident. A crowd of more than a dozen onlookers gathered outside the Rattana Thai restaurant and bar in Eastern Beach Road to observe the police

activity. Counties Manukau East Police area commander, inspector Wendy Spiller, thanks local residents for their patience during the stand-off. “The safety of members of the public is our priority when we attend any incident involving firearms, she says. “We are very aware that having road cordons in place for this type of incident can cause issues with commuter traffic, and having so many police vehicles in the area can create some disturbances. “We’re thankful for the public’s support during this time and are very happy to have resolved the incident peacefully. Eastern Beach resident Graham

Peet and his wife were returning to their home on Monday night when stopped by police. “I managed to turn left into The Esplanade to go to my brother’s home instead, says Mr Peet. “After waiting a couple of hours, I came up with the plan of driving back out, then along Vivian Wilson Drive where Willow Park Christian Camp had its gate open. “I drove through the grounds and out the other end at Hostel Access Road, which was beyond the farthest police road block on The Esplanade, to our home. Mr Peet says he understands the people at the property visited by police on Monday had been living there for less than a month.
