ngoing accidents at a notorious Half Moon Bay intersection have not moved Auckland Transport (AT) to change its stance on installing a roundabout or traffic lights. An AT spokesman says the CCO (council-controlled organisation) carried out a comprehensive investigation of the intersection in 2013 and considered various options, including a roundabout or traffic signals. Both options were discarded and AT is not currently reconsidering them. Half Moon Bay Residents and Ratepayers Association chairman Keith Ingram says there are near misses on a daily basis and on

average one nudge nose-to-tail or minor accident every week to 10 days. But the AT spokesman says the intersection was upgraded three months ago with new traffic islands and kerb widening in order to improve the safety for traffic and pedestrians. “AT is closely monitoring the effectiveness of the changes and the photos [which Mr Ingram provided] have been reviewed. To address the crashes AT is planning to treat the road surface to improve the road’s skid resistance.”

start on a steep incline, meaning increased noise from gear changes and braking and would likely result in engine braking of trucks when approaching downhill to the roundabout. “In addition, having the roundabout circulatory lane on such a steep grade increases the risk of right-turning traffic losing traction.” The steep grade generates similar issues for traffic signals, the spokesman says. Mr Ingram says he has been told much of the heavy traffic, including dangerous goods, bound for SeaLink vessels is now diverted through Auckland. But the AT spokesman says AT has not been ➤ Turn to Page 3 informed of this.

for rejecting the roundabout and traffic signal options. But Mr Ingram says he doesn’t buy this because, as the result of increased traffic, trucks frequently have to stop when coming up the hill and then can get started OK. But the spokesman says a roundabout it not considered appropriate as the site has a gradient of about 10 per cent. In accordance with the roading design manual, the gradient on approaches to roundabouts should be limited to three-four per cent and should not exceed six per cent. “The steep grade of the road, in combination with the high truck volumes and braking would require trucks to frequently
