Hit, run driver found By NICK KRAUSE
P
olice have caught up with a driver accused of the hit and run of a toddler on Baverstock Road, Flat Bush. Police are speaking to a 23-yearold male in relation to the incident. A family is counting its blessings after their children narrowly escaped death trying to cross the road near Baverstock Oaks School. Mum Mandeep Kaur was walking her four-year-old son and nephew to kindergarten at around 8am on August 18. The Times could not locate her for further comment by deadline. Police said as she crossed Baver-
“Failing to stop and render assistance following a vehicle crash is a criminal offence.” Counties Manukau Senior Sergeant Jono Chappell
stock Road she noticed a white sedan vehicle travelling towards her “at a fast speed”. She acted quickly to pull both children back, however as she lifted her son, the vehicle hit his right leg which was broken in the incident. The vehicle did not stop and continued driving. CCTV footage was obtained however the vehicle’s registration number was not visible.
The cousins, on their way to preschool on the same campus as Baverstock Oaks School, and heavily pregnant mother Mandeep were “inches from death”, media reported. Now a school parent and the principal are making another plea to Auckland Council to put a pedestrian crossing or judder bars in place. Principal Mary Wilson told the Times the school uses kea cross-
ings which, according to the NZ Transport Agency website, only operate when a school patrol and two fluorescent orange crossing point flag signs (one on each side of the road) are present. “We’ve asked council for years why we can’t have a zebra crossing,” Mrs Wilson said. “They argue (that) if the (kea) crossing was turned into a zebra crossing, that people then assume they can step onto the road and cars will stop.” NZTA’s website says in general, pedestrian crossings are safe places to cross the road. “However, there’s a potential danger with pedestrian crossings that aren’t used very often. ➤ Turn to Page 5
