he Howick and Beachlands police stations are listed as two of 16 police stations and community police centres which could be closed according to information leaked to media.

The NZ Herald last week revealed a leak identified the names of 16 stations and centres that could be closed to the public in Auckland, as police announce security needs to be beefed up at 105 of its buildings throughout New Zealand.

However a police statement denied the claims of station closures.

A media statement from acting assistant commissioner district operations, Bruce Bird, said in response to a number of media queries, that claims that 16 stations in Auckland will close is incorrect.

“As outlined in a statement issued by police last week, a new set of infrastructure design features are being introduced to enhance safety at police front counters.

“The new features are designed to deal with the most likely threats at publicly accessible police premises,” he said.

“The safety of police staff, volunteers and visitors to our premises is of paramount importance and is a real priority for police.”

He said a review of existing infrastructure highlighted a number of premises where more immediate practical steps were needed to increase security.

“There are 105 stations we have identified in this category around New Zealand. For operational reasons, we will not be releasing locations of the 105 stations,” he said.

The front counter safety project

was “absolutely not about cost savings”.

“It is about the safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors. We note that a police employee was recently subjected to a very violent attack in the front entrance of Counties Manukau station recently, so the risks to our staff are very real,” he said.

“This work is also not in response to the recent legislative changes. Police announced the front counter review project last year, in response to concerns being raised by our own staff.” ➤ Turn to Page 3

he first grants from the Li family’s $10 million cancer research gift to the University of Auckland, were made this month and will support research into cancer biomarkers.

In September last year, Bucklands Beach entrepreneur Liangren Li and his family announced a record $10m endowment fund to provide annual interest for investing in cancer research.

Mr Li was diagnosed with lung cancer in February 2015, despite never smoking, living a healthy lifestyle, and having none of the risk factors for lung cancer.

The major grant is the 2016 Li Family Cancer Research Project Grant which was made to Dr Michelle Wilson and her team, for a project called ‘Prosper – Profiling of Oncology Patients as part of Clinical care and Research’.

The $480,000 project will run over three years starting in September and focuses on biomarkers for gynaecological cancers. It plans to expand to include other tumour types over this period.

Dr Gu is a researcher at the Auckland Cancer Society Research Centre and the grant is for $300,000 over three years, starting in January 2017.

Dr Wilson, the principal Investigator for the Prosper project, is a medical

oncologist with the Cancer and Blood Service at Auckland City Hospital and a clinical senior research fellow with the Department of Oncology at the University of Auckland.

This project recognises that while substantial progress has been made in the treatment of cancer through the use of targeted therapies, what works for one patient might not work for another.

Biomarkers are specific characteristics of the

cancer that may provide information about which cancers are more or less aggressive and which will or will not respond to a specific treatment.

“The increasing appreciation and identification of specific mutations that drive cancers, leaves us on the threshold of a new era in which biomarkers will be used to direct targeted agents to those patients most likely to respond,” says Dr Wilson.

The study will collect tumour samples from previous surgery alongside fresh samples if a cancer has recurred and analyse them to provide biomarker information specific to a patient’s cancer.

This will help doctors identify which clinical trials or treatments may be appropriate for the patient in the future.

“Gynaecological cancers are a major cause of mortality and morbidity internationally,” she says.

“In Auckland approximately 120 to 150 new patients with ovarian, endometrial or cervical cancer are seen by a medical oncologist each year.

In general, when these

diseases recur, there are few effective therapeutic options with little improvement in patient outcomes over the past 20 years,” says Dr Wilson.

The four main objectives of the research are: ■■ To demonstrate that patients with gynaecological cancers can be matched to therapeutic targets, approved therapies and clinical trials of investigational agents based on the molecular profile of their tumours.

■■ To demonstrate the feasibility and acceptability of therapeutic selection guided by molecular prescreening of fresh tumours collected at the time of disease relapse.

■■ To establish a clinical database in conjunction with genomic data.

■■ To establish ethically approved policies and procedures for collection of archival and fresh samples from patients with recurrent gynaecological cancers.

Two doctoral scholarships were also awarded by the Li Family Cancer Research fund worth up to $27,000 each over three years.

It becomes more difficult to avoid excessive weight loss or gain, and minerals such as iron and calcium may be depleted.

White water park flowing

A

challenge – a Wero – was laid down this week for novice paddlers to Olympic champions as the waters at New Zealand’s first manmade white water facility were switched on and Prime Minister John Key declared the park officially open.

Close to 20 years have gone by since the Vector Wero Whitewater Park was a glint in the eye of Sir Noel Robinson, chairman of the Second Nature Charitable Trust (formerly the Counties Manukau Pacific Trust).

After 10 years in the making, the park, next to the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau, came to life on Tuesday as a waka led a procession of kayakers and rafters onto the water, among them members of the New Zealand Canoe Slalom paddling team who tested the waters over Anzac weekend.

Mr Key said the facility was a great asset for young people who wanted to have fun but also for those involved in the kayaking and rafting sport.

He described Sir Noel as being “like a dog with a bone, never letting up on his vision”.

“This park is remarkable; it has been an enormous task.

Wero, Sir Noel said, was

The journey had been a partnership between Auckland Council, central government,

“It will deliver many aspirations and inspire youth to reach new heights.

The $40 million complex features grade 2/3 and 3/4 rafting courses and a one hectare pond. It boasts the world’s first man-made and controlled 4.5 metre waterfall.

Kiwi Olympic kayaking champion Ian Ferguson is Wero’s general manager.

Richard Jeffery, the trust’s chief executive says the aim is to get 15,000 children through the small course and 35,000 rafters through the big course every year, with the business model allowing affordable access for the community.

The complex opens this weekend for casual paddlers.

It will host an international invitational kayaking regatta in November and World Masters Games water events in 2017.

The Herald last week reported sources within the police confirmed plans for the 16 stations “to at least temporarily shut their doors and that some of them may never re-open”.

“Mr Bird’s comments were at odds with information provided to the Herald by independent sources and also by Labour MP and Auckland Mayoral candidate, Phil Goff,” the paper reported. “Mr Goff said police sources had also informed him that the closure decision has been made by the executive leadership board of the New Zealand Police based on the Front Counter Safety Project.

“Police tell me the real motivation behind this decision is to cut costs by recentralising police operations at the expense of community access to policing services.”

Meanwhile Mr Bird said in his statement: “What is required will vary from station to station, but may include positioning of CCTV to cover the entrance and front counters, and installation of duress alarms at front counters. “In some of these stations, one of the options may be to limit public access at times when constabulary staff are on the premises. “This does not mean the stations will permanently close, but the public access at some stations may be, as an interim measure, restricted to those times when a constabulary/authorised officer is available to work at the front counter.”

Trust cleans up our filthy waterways Are Auckland’s waterways as clean and clear as you think they are? Times reporter Rumer-Grace Archer got down and dirty with the Watercare Harbour Clean-Up Trust to reveal the shocking reality of what is piling up in Auckland’s waterways Watercare Harbour Clean-Up Trust contractors Hayden Smith and Ben Harris crew and maintain the Phil Warren II boat, working year-round to collect rubbish from Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, Manukau Harbour and inner gulf islands.

Heading up the Tamaki River on Tuesday morning, the crew and I, with the help of volunteers from Spark, collected more than 5000 litres of litter within an hour from a 100 metre area on the Tamaki River foreshore near East Tamaki.

“This is a slightly higher amount of rubbish than we normally find in an area of this

size, although the type of trash is consistent with what we usually collect,” Smith says.

The most common items of rubbish found were bottles, plastic bags wrappers and polystyrene but also included tyres, furniture, clothing, kids’ toys, and even a TV. While some of the rubbish along property boundaries was “definitely due to indiscriminate dumping,” Smith says the majority of rubbish in the harbour arrives from improperly disposed of rubbish on our city’s streets.

“The rubbish ends up in drains, flowing into the stormwater network and out into our harbours and

waterways. It is then moved across the water by rain, wind and tides.

“This is why it is so important to make sure your trash is recycled properly and that all

loose litter items are stowed tightly,” Smith says.

In the first three months of this year alone, the trust and its volunteers collected 110,225 litres of litter.

While prevailing winds and back-eddy currents help Smith to determine major litter collection points, the sheer volume of litter in the water means most coastal areas are affected.

Pageant makeover underway

A

fter a two-year break the doyen of beauty pageants Val Lott is ready to re-launch the Miss Howick contest but this time on an international scale.

She’s been invited by oganisers of the Miss Regal International Pageant, to send a New Zealand representative to the event. It’s scheduled for 28 days in July on the Caribbean island of Antigua.

With no time to spare, Mrs Lott is calling for young women to put their names forward for the Miss Howick Regal International title.

The top prize will be an allexpenses-paid trip to Antigua and the opportunity to compete for the international title.

“This is a different level,” Mrs Lott says.

“We will be bypassing pageants, such as Miss Auckland and Miss Universe, instead relaunching Miss Howick as an international pageant. We will be starting again.”

Mrs Lott was among a number of former Miss Universe directors contacted by the pageant oganisers towards the end of last year.

“At first I was cautious about where I would be sending a girl. I like to know that pageants are responsible events and I had to be absolutely confident about this one.”

After many conversations she’s reached that confidence level.

The pageant’s parent company, Antigua Pageants says its mission is to re-energise the concept of pageantry.

“The main focus is to celebrate and showcase the intelligence, beauty and talent of the modern woman; one who is not only physically beautiful but self-driven with a purpose

With 25 years of organising Miss Howick behind her, along with working as director of Miss Auckland for 17 years before being appointed New Zealand national director for the Miss Universe organisation, Mrs Lott has no doubt about the potential pool of “lovely girls” in Howick.

Also Miss Howick, she says, is a well established pageant and not an unknown quantity.

And the young women don’t have to reside or have a special connection with Howick.

She’s opening the opportunity to all young women who want to gain the life skills pageants provide and are ready to attend auditions in Howick.

Contenders for the international pageant must be at least 18 years and under 27 years of age as of last February 1. But Mrs Lott isn’t closing the door on younger participants saying they could gain experience in

this year’s run-up in readiness for overseas pageants in the future.

“Most of the girls do pageants a couple of times before accumulating the experience to go overseas,” she says.

After two years retirement Mrs Lott says she’s missed the behind the scenes work of organising pageants and is ready to take up the mantle again. The international connection this time will also be good promotion for Howick and its businesses which have always supported Miss Howick in the past, she says.

Over 25 years the Howick and Pakuranga Times has supported the Miss Howick pageant and it, along with sister publication, the Botany and Ormiston Times, will continue to do so this year.

Centenary of Anzac

t was 100 years to the day last Monday when Kiwis and Australians first commemorated Anzac Day. The first Anzac ceremony was held on April 25, 1916 which looked back to the previous year’s New Zealand and Australian engagement at Gallipoli.

Addressing crowds on Howick’s Stockade Hill, Howick Local Board chairman David Collings said both nations’ attention later shifted to the two-anda-half- years fought on Europe’s Western Front which involved significantly higher losses.

“Anzac Day has come to embrace the losses in conflicts since,” he said. “Anzac Day will not fade. People will continue to gather to commemorate those who fell from our two nations.”

A tangible recognition of the anniversary was the completion of a sealed path up the hill to the centotaph with the shape of Anzac poppies indented on each side.

As the parade of veterans filed into their seats at the 11am Civic Service the renewed interest from young people was spectacularly demonstrated. Students from Macleans, Pakuranga, Botany Downs, Elim Christian, Sancta Maria, St Kentigerns, Ormison Senior and Edgewater Colleges and Mission Heights Junior College, followed by intermediate school and youth group representatives, filled up the eastern flank of the memorial area.

A blank round fired from a 104 Howitzer gun was quickly followed by a fly-over of nine War Birds vintage aircraft. Eyes turned frequently to the sky as the aircraft returned in a variety of formations, one group of five streaming a spectacular smoke trail behind.

the experience of two of his relatives in World War I. Equally moving was the rendition by Howick Brass of Salvationist Robert Redhead’s Reflections in Nature.

The benediction by community pastor Mark van Wijk was accompanied by a final aircraft fly-by. Then it was time for the elderly and the young to parade down a lined Picton Street to be met by applause from appreciative members of the public.

It was also a time for quieter reflection for those of us who placed commemorative information about our loved ones’ war service on white crosses which

spilled down Stockade Hill.

■ RSA patron Adele White passes on advice she received about the correct poppy-wearing procedure. Women, her military veteran adviser said, should wear their poppy on their right side, the red representing the blood of those who gave their lives. The black represents the mourning of those who didn‘t have their loved ones return home, and the green leaf represents the grass and crops growing, along with future

prosperity after the Great War destroyed so much.

The leaf should be positioned at 11 o’clock to represent the 11th hour of the 11th month, the time that World War I formally ended.

While he was worried that the younger generations wouldn’t understand this and his generation wouldn’t be around for much longer to teach them, Ms White says “we must remember those from our current wars too”.

■ A Botany Town Centre reference to ‘peace poppies’ planted for its Anzac Day recognition has elicited the information that a ‘peace poppy’ should be white rather than red.

The white poppy is used as a symbol of peace, worn as an alternative or complement to the red remembrance poppy. In New Zealand a White Poppy annual appeal was run in 2009 and 2010

by Peace Movement Aotearoa in the week preceding Anzac Day with all proceeds going to White Poppy Peace scholarships.

But the appeal was controversial, with Veteran’s Affairs Minister Judith Collins claiming the white poppy appeal was “incredibly disrespectful to those who served their country”.

White poppies have also been worn in New Zealand to mark Remembrance Day.

ith the third annual Anzac Biscuit Bake-off wrapped up, the team at Howick Library is already looking towards next year when they will introduce a littleknown contender which made its mark in both World Wars – the ginger nut biscuit.

Howick librarian, Vivienne Durrant says next year’s competition will be the Clash of the Biscuits – the Anzac versus the ginger nut.

The idea came about after the team discovered a 1965 interview with 100-year-old Helena Barnard who baked thousands of ginger nuts to send to troops in World War I. From her small kitchen in Eltham, Taranaki, Mrs Barnard earned a reputation as New Zealand’s “Ginger nut Lady” with her biscuits becoming famous among the Anzacs. Today they are viewed as possibly the original Anzac biscuit.

Before packing them into tins, Mrs Barnard wrapped her ginger nuts in newspaper so that soldiers would have some fresh news to read while they snacked.

When World War II broke out, she started baking again, despite being in her 80s. Newspapers estimated that she made more than 4000 kg of ginger nuts during both World Wars,

an effort that earned her a British Empire Medal.

Howick Library launched its Anzac Biscuit Bake-off three years ago to mark the 100th anniversary of the World War I battle of Gallipoli.

“The team wanted to commemorate the anniversary and we will probably run the competition for another two years to mark the end of World War I,” Ms Durrant says.

“Next year it will be the Clash of the Biscuits – the ginger nuts and the Anzacs,” she says.

“We’ve only just discovered the

interview with Mrs Barnard who talked of the ginger nut biscuits she sent in both wars.”

This year’s competition attracted 17 entries, including five from children.

While there were some variations, such as the introduction of dried apricots, the traditional Anzac took the prizes with Zoe Brown of Howick winning the adult section, and Charlotte Price, of Howick, the children’s section.

Prizes were donated by Howick New World and Wild Wheat Bakery.

Sign language introduced to theatre

By Marianne Kelly Exploring the unique concept of integrating sign language into theatre direction and choreography will be a special feature of the Harlequin Musical Theatre’s next production, the classic rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar.

In support of New Zealand Sign Language week on May 9-15, the theatre is inviting deaf and hearing audiences to an interpreted performance on May 11. It will be followed by a question and answer session with the cast and creatives behind the production.

Choreographer Kimberley Cousins says using sign language within a show is quite rare, especially within New Zealand theatre.

“So for New Zealand, and especially in musical theatre, it’s quite a new concept,” she says. “With the help of deaf tutor James Pole and New Zealand Sign Language interpreter Melissa Sutton, the cast of more than 40 actors, singers, and dancers has been learning sign language for the past few weeks.

“It’s a very visual physical art, so in the theatre it translates really well on stage,” Ms Cousins says.

Directed by D.T. Morgan the production will take audiences on a modern-day journey through Jesus Christ’s final days.

“This is an exciting retelling of the greatest story ever told through the eyes of Judas,” he says.

ormer Bucklands Beach student Shaun Chang has an ambition to open the first eye clinic in the Sargamatha (Mt Everest) National Park and now his brother Hong Chang, has come onboard to boost the fund-raising efforts.

Shaun is currently an optometrist based in Sydney, Australia and heads up the Eyes4Everest charity.

The former Bucklands Beach Primary School and Macleans College student is working on raising an initial A$40,000 ($43,000) needed to design and build a permanent eye clinic in Khumjung, one of the original Sherpa settlements where his hero, the late Sir Edmund Hillary did all his work. Hong, who lives in South-East Auckland, will lead an 18-day trekking challenge, on September 28-October 15, in the Himalayas to raise funds for the charity.

The venture started when Shaun, a behavioural optometrist, stumbled across the Hillary hospital and learned children were having sight difficulties.

He returned to Australia and formed Eyes4Everest with a small group of optometrists.

The charity was gifted land to build an eye clinic and it’s hoped to use the building to house sophisticated imaging instruments to conduct virtual consultations and perform minor eye surgery.

A comprehensive eye test, a pair of prescription spectacles and sunglasses for one person could be paid for by $50 raised from the trekking challenge; $350 will provide visionrestoring surgery for a person suffering from cataracts.

Trekkers who raise more than $3000 will earn a plaque inside the eye clinic.

The 18 day challenge includes a 14-day trek (visit-

ing Everest Base Camp, the Hillary Hospital, and the site of the planned eye clinic).

The A$2300 cost includes three night’s accommodation at Hotel Family Home Kathmandu, return mountain flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee and tea for the trek; tea house accommodation for the trek; a TIMS Card and Trekking permit and a Sherpa guide and porter fee.

Supporting victims of violent crime

t’s shocking but true. If a child is abused, it takes an average of 20 years for him/her to speak up.

It took Amber Lehndorf’s brother around 27 years to tell his family about the sexual abuse he faced as a 10-year-old.

Addressing Year 13 students of Macleans College recently, Auckland Child Abuse spokesperson, Ms Lehndorf along with Jock Jamieson, chair of Sensible Sentencing Trust and Jessica McVicar, youth advocate of Sensible Sentencing Trust, (SST) disclosed some scary statistics.

One in three girls may be sexually abused before she turns 16-years-old.

One in seven boys many be sexually abused by adulthood.

Sharing her 37-year-old brother’s story, Ms Lehndorf told a group of social science students how her mother missed all the

signs because she was dealing with her own pain of separation with their father. She said it takes an average of 20 years for a victim to speak up.

“Mum and Dad were going through a divorce and so when my brother was behaving differently, my mum thought he was finding it hard to cope with it.”

“He was being sexually abused for two years by his softball coach who took advantage of the turmoil our family was going through,” she said.

It was only recently that her oldest brother called the family from Australia saying that he was coming home to discuss an urgent matter.

“He couldn’t live with the secret anymore. You don’t have

to be like my brother who battled with it for 25 years before he told the family and reported it to the police. After investigation, three other men came forward with 19 charges.

She said it explained those trust and anger issues her brother had over the years.

“He went through depression, anxiety attacks and a few suicide attempts,” she revealed.

“Now that he had the courage to speak up, he is going through counselling and is doing much better.”

Public Awareness and education speaker Sensible Sentencing Trust and Macleans College teacher Mr Jamieson encouraged students to speak up if anything is not right.

He asked them to “play judge” as he presented cases of manslaughter over the years.

Students were shocked when they realised how, in most homicide cases, the criminal is protected and eligible for parole after one third of the sentence while the victim has to go through their private hell alone.

Jessica, whose dad Garth McVicar is the founder of SST, role-played with Ms Lehndorf, about how one should handle a sensitive situation when a friend confides in you about being sexually violated.

It gave the students an opportunity to know how to support victims of crime and help report it without making any judgment.

Kiwi mission group takes stand for leprosy

Leprosy is a disease of the skin and nerves.

Few Kiwis are aware that Leprosy Mission New Zealand (LMNZ) has been supporting those affected by leprosy in the bustling city of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

LMNZ has a long partnership in the city of six million people which has one of the highest prevalence rates of leprosy in the country.

With a number of projects operating in Chittagong for more than 10 years, currently, the third phase of a project has been co-funded by the NZ government. Wanting to give back to the country he comes from, Dannemora resident Bernard Gomes was part of a group of five volunteers including Ataur Rahman, the then Hon consul for Bangladesh, Leprosy Mission board member Phil Johnstone, medical doctor and businessman Dr Bashir Ahmed and gender specialist

“If the government of New Zealand is supporting the project, what are the Bangladeshis who have settled here doing about it?” asked Mr Gomes who works at the Office of Ethnic Communities as a senior Diversity and Inclusion advisor within the Department of Internal Affairs. “We wanted to give the Bangladeshis who are well settled in New Zealand an opportunity to give back to their country of origin,”

Feedback ‘I really need surgery’

A recent article in the NZ Herald on the 280,000 people on hospital waiting lists in NZ and the 170,000 that need surgery and have been dropped off the official lists, I found out recently I am one of them.

Three years ago after having two hip replacements through the public system, my surgeon offered me spinal fusion. I declined as I needed time for my body and mind to adjust, but the offer was there, until now.

My back has now deteriorated to such a degree that I decided to have the operation.

My GP contacted the orthopaedic department of Middlemore Hospital for an appointment. Not only was I declined along with the other 170,000 people in NZ, but we got no explanation, even though my surgeon had recommended I needed surgery.

Perhaps a genie will give them three wishes?

They are still left with the same problems but not being on a list have no hope of surgery to help them.

Most people could probably cope with being told they may have to wait some months, but being dropped off the list completely is something I personally cannot cope with.

Hopefully I will have better news with the next letter my doctor sends to the DHB. Is the reason dropping people off the list makes hospital operation statistics look better, or lack of money? The problem doesn’t go away. It just affects people’s quality of life, particularly older people.

Treating dogs like wolves

Re Biting dog breeds hard to identify (Times, April 21).

The answer to your question is quite simple.

Children are bitten more because they appear less dominant.

The problem is that a huge amount of our so-called experts teach dog owners to be dominant or to be the alpha pack leader.

This is based on how wolves interact.

Unfortunately, if you treat a domestic dog like a wolf, it will act like one thus putting our children at risk.

In my practice training and retraining, all of my clients have already received often dangerous advice and training from other trainers and experts.

What a great kindness

If any of our readers are misguided enough to mutter “get back to your own country”, please

consider my next story.

My wife and I, who both served in the Royal Navy, were selling poppies for Anzac Day in our usual spot outside Hancock in Picton Street and we had placed our respective photographs taken in our naval uniforms.

We were both 18 then I might add.

We were talking to a very attractive Indian lady who had purchased a poppy with a very generous donation when a gust of wind blew my wife’s photo down and smashed it.

Offering her commiserations, the lady then went away. Gathering up the pieces, we thought no more about it.

A short while later the lady came back with what we thought a rather expensive replacement frame. She explained she was touched by our putting in so much volunteer work, she did not want me to get cut with the old one.

We don’t know who you are but

what a lovely act of generosity and we thank you so very much.

What we do know about you is you have lived in NZ 14 years, you are a pathologist and your husband is a doctor.

What a wonderful immigrant.

Re Redoubt Road – Mill Road Corridor upgrade (Times Online, April 20).

This proposal does not go far enough.

The double lanes need to go through right to Clevedon Road, not just to Popes Road.

There are two new subdivisions in the immediate Clevedon Rd/Dominion Rd area, therefore the corridor should go right through to service the increase in traffic and alleviate the current congestion moving through.

Doctors to cars I

t could be said that automotive specialists have a harder job than medical doctors.

“The human body doesn’t change but a car’s electronics are different every year,” the manager of Howick Auto Centre & Electrical, Dion Lowe says. He’s talking about the efforts needed to keep up with fast-moving technology.

“The technology is changing every year and becomes harder and harder,” he says. “You have to really drive yourself to keep up. You couldn’t qualify and then sit and leave it.”

Dion has been in the industry for 25 years, joining the Howick company as an auto electrician 19 years ago and part-owning it for 10. He sold it to fellow Howickians, Sally and Craig Wallen, 18 months ago.

In a drive to keep up with the technology the business has become a one-stop shop for mechanical diagnostics and repairs, auto electrical, car air conditioning and marine business.

“We started out as an auto electrical company,” Dion says. “But with customer demand and how technical cars were getting, it meant as well as needing mechanics to pull engines apart, we had to break out and do everything else. We had to keep up with

the modern technology, such as up-to-date scanning and diagnostic tools.

“You need a lot of computer skills and software to plug into cars to find out what’s wrong.

You have to be prepared to invest the money.”

For example, the business has formally become East Auckland’s CenturyYuasa battery fitment specialist, and has the widest range of high quality Yuasa battery products to service the Howick area.

As a consequence of the changes the company’s six staff member skills cover the range, from a mechanic to auto electricians, an air conditioning specialist and special skills needed to tackle boat engines.

While trailer boats are often brought into the Moore Street site, the team makes marina visits to the luxury launches and yachts.

It’s a competitive area, Dion says, but the company does a lot of repeat business for its regular Howick customers.

And local garages often refer the more complex problems: “The hard problems end up here.”

The team prides itself on being able to service anything from small Japanese models to the prestigious European names, including BMW/Mini, Audi VW and Mercedes.

For its warrant of fitness (WOF) business, the company has installed its own diagnostic brake rolling machine to check wheel alignment and shock absorbers.

It also provides a breakdown service which includes picking up local customers and delivering them home if they are having work done on their cars.

The business has won several national awards from the Motor Trade Association (MTA) for its dedication to electrical and mechanical excellence. It’s also AA accredited, working in conjunction with car insurers and used car dealers in the area.

Howick Auto Electrical has been operating in Howick for about 50 years and throughout that time has been a regular advertiser with the Howick and Pakuranga Times.

“We have stuck with it [the Times] and it has always worked for us,” Dion says.

“We tried radio at one time but felt it did not work as well as the local newspaper.

“The internet and our website also drives business. And there’s the old-fashioned word of mouth.

“We’ve worked with many Times people over the years.

They are fantastic to work with.”

The Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/Walk will once again be taking place in Ellerslie, with women from all around the region preparing to walk and run their way through Mother’s Day on May 8.

The event, which begins at the Ellerslie Event Centre at 8am, follows a 5km route. It is part of a nationwide initiative run by Jennian Homes to support the Heart Foundation’s Go Red for Women campaign, which aims to improve the heart health of New Zealand females.

Heart disease is the single biggest killer of women, taking the lives of over 50 each week in this country. Wilde about music Local singer-songwriter Jesse Wilde is about to release his first EP, Ghost Town Road.

Wilde, from Half Moon Bay, says a rock pilgrimage to the USA inspired the six songs on the EP Ghost Town Road due for release April 29.

It is touted as an homage of sorts to the faded allure of Route 66 and to Wilde’s American musical influences.

Wilde toured extensively overseas including the UK, Europe and North America on a pilgrimage of his musical influences. Along the way he met John “Cougar” Mellencamp, Bob

inspired: Jesse Wilde’s band The Drive will release a new EP next week.

urder mysteries are a popular genre of theatre which is part of the attraction for the director of Howick Little Theatre’s next production.

After a 12-month break from his last stint, directing 4000 Miles, Nathan Hey has returned to direct the stage production of Peter James’ thriller, The Perfect Murder. The book has been adapted for the stage by Shaun McKenna and had its world premier in the UK in January 2014. Mr Hey says after he read the script he decided that it offered considerable scope and challenge.

“It’s a really well-written script which drew me to it,” he says. “Sure it’s a murder. But there is also a lot of drama and comedy, some dark, but also light with good laughs.”

The script is unusual in that all five characters take a major part in the production.

Barrie Graham plays the unhappy husband Victor Smiley who, after a long marriage, decides he wants to get his wife Joan, played by Fiona Hall, out of his life forever.

But through the twists and turns of the plot, he gets a nasty surprise.

Richard Deluca plays Don Kirk who the audience will have to wait for to reveal his part in the murky plot. Meantime Arthur Young plays Detective Roy Grace who has the job of piecing it all together.

New to the HLT stage is Sophia Malecaut-Watts who plays sex worker Kamila Walcak. “The smallest role accounts for about 40 per cent of the

script,” Mr Hey says. “But even then those scenes are big ones.

It’s been interesting because there are not just two leads.

The whole cast is so involved.”

With hard-working veterans of HLT and the Dolphin taking the main parts, Mr Hey says that three weeks out the play is already getting slick – “one thing I like is having a slick operation.”

While the play is a murder mystery, he says he hopes to surprise the audience.

“I want it to run to the last where you think you know how it is going to end, but you don’t.

The production contains a variety of short and sharp scenes, but also longer scenebuilding surprises, with adult themes running through it.

“It is dark humour, exploring the psychology of murder,” Mr Hey says. “But it is still so funny.

There is not one scene without a laugh. It has some really nice moments and is humorous, although it’s dark.

The Perfect Murder plays at 8pm on May 7-28, with 2pm matinees on May 8 and 15, at Howick Little Theatre, 1 Sir Lloyd Drive, Lloyd Elsmore Park, Pakuranga.

Upon returning from the US, he based himself in Auckland and formed his new band Fiesta Drive after his former Half Moon Bay address (now known as The Drive).

Together they have recorded two live DVDs, two live CDs and a studio album and have played a large number of gigs around the country.

Wilde spent another six months in the US in 2005 writing and performing in LA, Texas, New York, Chicago and Nashville.

Whilst there, he co-wrote the

song Ghost Town Road with Rick Beresford who has a gold record for a song he wrote for American country music artist George Jones titled If Drinking Doesn’t Kill Me Her Memory Will.

The new EP is being pitched as a collection of “beautifully crafted” Americana pop rock songs.

Lead title singleGhost Town Road “propels us with warm, hearty production, passion and nostalgia and builds to a crescendo”.

Juliet’s Fallen is a love song for Wilde’s wife based on the romantic tragedy of Romeo & Juliet and begins with a Bob Seger-style piano riff building into a careening rock track reminiscent of early Springsteen.

“I’ve usually produced my own music” says Wilde, “so this is the first time I have hired a real producer – Stephen Small - and I’m really happy I did.”

Known for his work on Kiwi singer/songwriter Jamie McDell’s debut and Autozamn recordings, Small produced the EP, with Tom Healy on engineering duties, all taking place in Wilde’s home studios Wilde Records in Half Moon Bay. Wilde’s band The Drive includes musicians Henrik Rylev (drums), Mark Collier (electric guitar) and Aaron Watkins (bass).

The Drive will perform at the Backbeat Bar on K Road on Friday April 29 to celebrate the EP release.

ecent fears that the Auckland market was cooling off were overstated, with median prices across the city rebounding to reach a new record high, the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) says.

The Eastern Beaches residential dwelling price in March was up 13 per cent to $990,000 compared with $878,000 the same time last year, according to REINZ figures.

Dwelling numbers sold in Eastern Beaches were down 23 per cent to 213 compared with 276 in March last year, while it took 35 median days to sell a property compared with 32 the same time last year.

Sales worth more than $1 million nationally were up by more than 90 per cent compared with February.

REINZ chief executive Colleen Milne says this is especially true in Auckland where one in three properties that sell are valued at more than $1 million, a record 35 per cent of the market.

“Recent fears of the Auckland market cooling off have been overstated as median prices across the city have rebounded during March,” she says.

“The slow-down in sales volumes after the introduction of tax and LVR changes last year appears to be coming to an end, with a significant lift in sales for March and a further uplift in the median price.”

QV national spokesperson Andrea Rush says home values have risen in most parts of New Zealand in the first quarter of 2016 with the exception of the Auckland region where values have been on a slight downward trend over the past three months.

“However, over the past few weeks activity and demand has begun to pick up again across the Super City and values have actually risen again over the past month by 0.6 per cent, so it appears the downward trend may be coming to an end.”

Jonno Ingerson, head of research for CoreLogic NZ says Auckland values have rebounded after dropping for only two months.

“I had been expecting a brief

and shallow drop in Auckland values due to the new restrictions on investors and the dramatic fall in Chinese buyer activity since September,” he says.

“However, I didn’t expect the drop to be quite this brief and shallow. That is making the assumption of course that this rebound in values in our largest city is going to continue.”

QV Homevalue registered valuer James Wilson says the ‘wait and see’ approach which entered the market after new rules to curb investor activity is subsiding and investors are beginning to re-enter the market.

“Agents are reporting a shortage of listings and that well-presented, quality homes are selling well with strong prices being achieved,” he

says. “Properties which provide multiple consented income units are increasingly popular among both investors and owner occupiers.”

Investors, he says, are now placing greater emphasis on the long-term rental returns over capital gains which indicates a shift away from a speculation based investment model and a return to traditional models governed by longer term investment returns.

The prospect of Auckland house prices continuing to increase throughout the year has returned, says Peter Thompson, managing director of Barfoot & Thompson.

“March is always one of the busiest sales months of the year and a good indicator of where prices are tracking for the remainder of the year,” he says.

Women building apprentice numbers A

drastic shortage of apprentices and growing housing demand has placed the spotlight on the potential for increased gender diversity in the male-dominated construction industry.

In 2016/2017 the demand for new houses is forecast at more than 28,000. But the current labour market is only able to support the building of 15,000 houses a year, says Building and Construction Industry Organisation (BCITO) chief executive Ruma Karaitiana.

“The industry needs to train more people and it needs to do it now,” he says. “Our traditional workforce pools are shrinking and if you’re running out of people you’ve got to be diverse and look for them somewhere else. We’re working in partnership with employers to figure out how we can do better with female participation in the industry.”

National Association of Women in Construction pastpresident and member Cathy Tracey agrees.

Research, she says, shows that diverse companies outpace homogeneous companies in terms of performance and productivity.

“When you’re on site, it’s about attitude, not gender,” Cathy says.

Carla Tonga is one of two female apprentices who took part in the Not Your Average Shed build at Sylvia Park to raise awareness of the apprentice shortage.

In 2015 women made up 17.5 per cent of the core construction sector and Carla says it will be fantastic to see more women in the trades.

“We need to focus on getting good tradies, regardless of gender. It’s about attitude, willingness to learn, and understanding that it’s a team environment, not a battle of the sexes.

“For me, becoming a building apprentice will get me to where I want to be in the

future, while at the same time being able to provide for my daughter,” Carla says.

However, she says she has experienced first-hand the challenges of being a women in the trades.

“There is a level of resistance. But personally it’s irrelevant to me as I don’t let it have an impact. I do worry, though, as a mother, that my daughter could face a similar situation.”

Carla says for any young woman thinking of pursuing a career in the trades it’s important to persevere.

“There will be people that will challenge you. But stay positive and committed.”

St Kents shine in triathlon Varying conditions greeted the 20 Saint Kentigern triathletes who competed in the 2016 New Zealand Secondary Schools Triathlon Championships in Queenstown.

Sophie Spencer dominated the under 12 girls’ field from start to finish on day one to record her first win of the championship earlier this month.

The under 16 boys’ race also started impressively for the college with Dylan McCullough surfacing from the freezing lake in first place followed by schoolmate Ryan Church in second.

McCullough continued a comprehensive display of all the disciplines to record first place despite facing older competitors.

Jacob Spring, Emma Hannan and Jack Melhuish recorded top 20 placings in the under 13 and under 14 categories.

In a large under 16 girls’ race field, Maddy Clarke and Annabelle Waterworth recorded pleasing results with a seventh place and tenth placing respectively.

The under 19 boys’ and girls’ competitions were highly competitive with Daniel Whitburn and Anna Wilkinson recording top 20 places.

In the team’s event, Saint Kentigern produced pleasing results with podium finishes for the under 16 girls’, placing second, and under 16 boys’. placing third.

The under 14 girls’ and under 14 boys’ produced impressive results given that most of the team have another year in this category.

Results on day two in the open water championships were impressive with Will Bason and Sophie Spencer both recording impressive wins in their respective age groups. In an exciting and tense race, Ryan Church medalled in the under 16 race, where only four seconds separated first place from fourth place.The second event of the day was the Aqauthon, where yet again Saint Kentigern was represented well. Gold medals were achieved in style with both Spencer and McCullough dominating their respective fields.

Botany win Baseball Botany Downs Secondary College (BDSC) won the recent 2016 National Secondary Schools Baseball Championship at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

In a hard fought final they overcame Auckland Grammar, scoring five runs in the bottom of the final inning to wipe out a four run deficit and claim the title with a final score of 8-7. BDSC students Alex Hill and Huriwaka Repia were named in a 2016 all-tournament team.

Chloe breaks club record at first attempt Chloe Burgess is a speedy seven-year-old athlete.

The Botany Downs Primary School student managed to come away with an astounding nine awards at the Pakuranga Athletics Club prize giving including breaking the club 400m championship record with a new time of 1m 24s.

Among her achievements she placed first in the girls sevenyear-old track, field and overall categories and first place overall aggregate points for the seven to 14 year old girls.

Chloe took second placings for overall field points and overall track points and was also acknowledged for representing Pakuranga at the Auckland Top 10 athletics competition and at outside events.

This year she competed in the Pakuranga Athletics Club championships for the first time since joining last season.

Ata boy - Hingano joins Warriors reserves F

ormer Pakuranga College student Ata Hingano has earned his place in the Warriors reserve grade to prepare him for the bruising physicality of the NRL. Under the watchful eye of Warriors NSW Cup coach Stacey Jones, Hingano isn’t just competing against the older guys, he’s dominating.

At North Sydney Oval two weeks ago Hingano tore the Bears to shreds, scoring a try, setting up another and making line-breaks at will in their 30-12 win.

Jones wouldn’t be surprised to see the 19-year-old crack the NRL this season, particularly with the seasonending injury to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck which was forced Tuimoala Lolohea to shift back to fullback.

“NSW Cup is a similar speed to Holden Cup but obviously more physical, and Ata has handled the step up really well.

The annual PIC Insurance Brokers Winter Series held by the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club is again calling all yachties and anyone interested to participate in yet another season of winter racing.

Run by the Bucklands Beach Yacht Club and sponsored by PIC Insurance Brokers a total of 13 races will be held every second Sunday starting with a free invitation race on Sunday, May 1 through until September 25 with a final prize-giving night on October 9.

The race course alternates between windward leeward racing where club buoys are laid and harbour courses where permanent marks in the harbour are rounded. This gives something for everyone.

The Winter Series has been around since the inception of the club in 1949, and competition and numbers are expected to increase again on last year’s very successful series.

The club encourages all sailors to get out on the water through the winter months to challenge themselves and improve their skills. Anyone can get involved even if you are

new to sailing. Whether it’s racing their own boat, or sailing in someone else’s boat just for something different, we want everyone to have a great time and enjoy the camaraderie amongst the sailors.

Following each race there will be a complimentary barbecue, lucky dip and spot prizes and on October 9, the final night, over $5000 of prizes will be won.

Skippers and crew alike, stand to win with a broad range of divisions from trailer yachts to large keelers with or without spinnakers, we cater for one and all.

The series entry fee is $120 for members for the whole series or $80 for the windward leeward series and $60 for the harbour series. If a sailor only wishes to race on the odd day then a single race entry fee is $20.

Rifles edge out Pakuranga College Rifles edged out Pakuranga United Rugby Club in their Auckland Premier Rugby clash on Saturday with a 23-20 win.

Despite holding onto the lead for most of the first half, and making a spirited comeback in the second, three penalties against the Green Machine proved too much in the end.

The game was riddled with handling errors and penalty turnovers as two top quality sides battled it out over the 80 minutes.

Rifles opened the scoring when the first of many penalties was awarded for holding on to the ball.

Rifles first five eighth Brock Hooper easily chipped the kick through from in front of the posts.

After a series of hard driving runs Joe Edwards surged forward and scored to the right of the posts.

Sadly the conversion from Nick Smith was pulled to the left of the posts to leave Pakuranga 5-3 ahead after 15 minutes.

Rifles stormed back onto attack with Pakuranga again penalised for hands in the ruck. This time Hooper made no mistake to take Rifles out to a 6-5 lead at the 20 minute mark.

After a conversion by Hooper, Rifles moved ahead to 13-10 after 38 minutes.

Another penalty in the second half saw Hooper again kicked Rifles to 16-10 ahead of Pakuranga.

The game changed at the 60 minute mark when Rifles fullback Veni Manufekai was sent from the field for throwing a punch after it looked like the play had ended.

Hooper took the score to 23-13 with 10 minutes to go with a perfectly judged kick from out wide.

Following a scrum Rifles failed to find touch but found a flying Nick Smith who flew down field dodging and weaving to score 10 metres to the right of the posts. Faiane slotted the conversion to leave Rifles ahead 23-20 with two minutes to go.

he All Blacks rugby star continues to sparkle brightly despite the retirement from the international scene of such icons as Richie McCaw, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock.

The magnitude of what the All Blacks achieved in becoming the first team to successfully defend the Rugby World Cup and claim the crown for a third time was recognised when they were named 2015 world team of the year in all sport codes at the prestigious awards in Berlin.

What made their feat so special was they achieved it in a style that far surpassed their gutsy nail-biting one-point 2011final win against France at Auckland’s Eden Park.

In fact winning in style has been a feature of the Steve Hansen era since he took over the head coach reins from the gifted Graham Henry and achieved a 90 per cent success rate.

Meanwhile having deservedly won the comeback of the year prize at the Laureus Awards, Dan Carter has guided French club Racing 92 into the European Champions Cup final against England’s Saracens following a 19-16 win against

Leicester.

It has been an amazing comeback for the popular Carter whose finest performance went back to the 2005 Wellington test against the British and Irish Lions before his heroics in last year’s World Cup. In fact he was lucky to be there and probably would not have been but for a much improved performance in the Eden Park test against Australia when the All Blacks avenged a Rugby championship loss with an emphatic win.

Meanwhile finding an All Black replacement for Carter is not going to be anywhere near as difficult as finalising a midfield combination to replace Nonu and Conrad Smith.

In fact the only difficulty will be deciding which one of four outstanding candidates in Aaron Cruden, Beauden Barrett, Lima Sopoaga and the versatile Damian McKenzie gets the job.

The clever Cruden looked to have the inside running until he was outplayed by the speedy Barrett’s brilliant performance in the Chiefs narrow 28-27 last round win.

Unfortunately, neither he nor

Cruden have proved consistently accurate goal-kickers of the standard achieved by Sopoaga and McKenzie.

Having won seven on the trot, the Crusaders trail the high flying Chiefs by just one point with both having won seven of eight games.

Blessed with a powerful forward game and much-improved passing and backing up, the Crusaders 40-4 thumping of the Brumbies was a warning to all comers they plan to farewell coach Todd Blackadder in style this year.

It has been a rough ride for the popular Blackadder over the years but the splendid return of Israel Dagg from injury and the form of veteran halfback Andy Ellis and his forwards bodes well for future prospects.

In third and fourth on 26 and 24 points respectively are the Hurricanes and Highlanders who have more points than Australian conference leaders the Rebels who are on 22, one clear of the Brumbies and five ahead of the 2014 champion Waratahs.
