Going, going, gone Owner ‘gutted’ as golf park shuts doors
Our Emma’s effort for cancer
By NICK KRAUSE
T
HE owner of Firmount Golf Park is saddened his facility is going to be bowled when the company shuts its doors for the last time next month. Alan Wallace conďŹ rmed to the Times that the golf facility owned and operated by his family on Ormiston Road would ofďŹ cially close on May 3. Media reported in October that a multi-million deal had been signed, with settlement to sell the 16ha block of land happening this year. Mr Wallace, 70, bought the land 21 years ago. The company’s website says the golf park offers indoor mini golf, a nine hole golf course, fully-automated driving range and the country’s largest golf retailer, the Golf Warehouse. Asked if he knew what was going to occupy the property after Firmount left, Mr Wallace expressed disappointment. “It’s industrial – it’s going to be all factories, all tin sheds and crap like that,â€? he said. “It’s sad. We had up to 60 staff in our heyday. It’s just sad. “I spent most of my life putting this place together. Seeing it pulled to bits is not (going to be nice).â€? Mr Wallace was uncertain what he and wife Dianne would do once the business had shut down for good. “Buggered if I know ... all of a sudden it comes to a close,â€? he said. He and his wife would continue cycling though, usually riding three times a week with Manukau City Vet➤ Turn to Page 3 erans Cycling Club.
SINCE having her head shaved at the end of March, Emma Duncan is well on the way to raising $5000 for a good cause. She is participating in the Shave for a Cure campaign, Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand’s signature fund-raising event. The 15-year-old had her head shaved at Noise Hairdressing in Howick and at the time of going to print had raised $4231.80. She also donated her pony tail to “Pantene Beautiful Lengths to support women with cancer by providing real-hair wigs to those who have suffered hair loss caused by their treatment. Emma is in Year 11 at Baradene College. Until the Monday edition of the Howick and Pakuranga Times was discontinued recently, the Cockle Bay girl delivered the newspaper for the previous four years. Emma’s fund-raising site can be found online at www.shaveforacure. co.nz.
