New councillor raring to spring into action

aul Young, the newly elected, first-ever Asian Kiwi Councillor is on a new high, and it’s got nothing to do with the V energy drink he is sipping on.

Sleep-deprived ever since he got a call from the council on Thursday noon saying he had claimed the highest number of votes at the Auckland Council by-election

for the Howick ward, he has been answering congratulatory calls and messages from council members, MPs and well-wishers locally as well as internationally.

Young won with 7631 votes ahead of Howick Local board member Jim Donald with 5830 votes.

He says he barely slept for an hour that night - or since.

On Saturday morning he was invited for tree planting at Riverina

School.

Even before he can get officially sworn in on September 27 at the Auckland Town Hall, he has been inundated with invitations.

When the Times met him on Monday evening just before he was scheduled to attend his first Howick Local Board meeting, “not officially though since I am not as yet sworn in as a councillor,” Mr Young had spent the entire day being oriented

at the city council, trying to find his way around —from the car park to the 26th floor—-meeting councillors, having a one-on-one introduction with Mayor Phil Goff at his office, meeting deputy mayor Bill Cashmore, council staff, followed by a health and safety session.

“It was so much information but everyone was so welcoming and supportive,” he says of his first day at the council.

East Auckland Tourism has been working with Auckland Transport towards installing a large map at this entry point to east Auckland.

This map will compliment Auckland Transport maps installed along the walkway, but will highlight the various hubs in the region that would be appealing to all type visitors, whether they are history buffs, foodies or fitness fanatics.

This type of information has been sorely lacking, and East Auckland Tourism is eager to provide informative maps in various important locations throughout the area.

Pakuranga Rotary Club trivia and auction night The Rotary Club of Pakuranga is holding its trivia and auction night on Saturday October 6 at Edgewater College.

With lots of friendly banter and encouragement from the MC, teams will compete and put their trivia knowledge to the test to win great prizes and also raise money for a good cause.

To add to the fun, the evening will boast a WWI Centenary theme and everyone is encouraged to dress as relatives would have during WWI. The club’s previous trivia nights have always sold-out and have been a great fundraiser to

provide continuing support for Life Education Trust Counties Manukau, Harold the Giraffe and other local projects.

Young wins Howick Ward seat

P

aul Young (pictured) has won the Howick by-election to become Auckland Council’s first Asian councillor.

The final count shows 27.6 per cent of eligible locals – 28,120 people out of a possible 102,000 – bothered to vote.

Young won with 7631 votes ahead of Howick Local board member Jim Donald with 5830 votes.

Young will see him take up the role of Auckland Councillor for the Howick Ward, alongside current Councillor Sharon Stewart.

Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown said: “Paul brings with him a wealth of local knowledge having lived and worked here for many years and will become Auckland’s first Councillor of Chinese descent. He’s well aware of the issues our community is concerned about, and I have every confidence he will work hard to address them.”

“This wasn’t a by-election we wanted, and I would like to take this opportunity to again acknowledge and thank Dick Quax for his years of service to the community.

His presence will be sorely missed, and Paul has got big shoes to fill as he tackles the job of holding Council to account on our behalf.”

I hope next election these issues are highlighted and engagement improves. Looking forward to 2019 and yes, I will run again!

I am so happy for Paul, I’ve known him since was very young from when he ran the photo shop in Meadowlands and will be keeping in touch with him during his term to help with engagement and youth issues.

He’s been an active and important member of our community for many years and after years of hard work in our community, he definitely deserves this position.

This election highlighted the need for more attendance at forums and engagement We need to introduce by laws to assure timewasters are sifted out.

Candidates should have a prerequisite to at least show face at one forum from a special interest group, have a Facebook/webpage or at the very least be in the country.

Not remotely campaigning and relying purely on their families political status doesn’t not constitute as a campaign and should not be considered a candidate, I am obviously referring to Jessica and David Collings.

Young female candidates are constantly pushing to be heard and taken seriously, far more than the other candidates. Jessica’s campagin, or lack of, highlighted privilege, disempowered and make a mockery of young female candidates and both David and Jessica should apolo-

Half Moon Bay pontoon repairs underway W

ork is underway at Half Moon Bay to repair and replace pontoons and piles severely damaged by a storm in January this year.

Howick Local Board chair David Collings and Howick Ward Councillor Sharon Stewart stopped by the site to get an update on progress this week.

Both have fielded plenty of inquiries from anxious boaties on the progress of the works over the past few months and are happy to see things starting to move ahead.

“With the scale of the damage it was clear it wouldn’t be a quick fix but it is good to see it get started.”

Councillor Stewart is also encouraged to hear the work is on track to be finished by Labour Weekend as predicted, although she hopes it could be

finished sooner.

“I have fielded plenty of calls and have been regularly checking in for updates. This is an extremely popular facility and the sooner it is back to full capacity the better.”

Auckland Council’s head of operational management and maintenance, Agnes McCormack, says the works are extensive. The bulk of the concrete pontoon units were damaged beyond repair and are unable to be reinstalled, the concrete boat ramp was undermined, and six of the 14 piles were also damaged and are being replaced.

Other piles are being strengthened and lengthened by installing sleeves over them to minimise the impact of future storms.

“It has taken us a while to get here but we needed to make

sure we understood the extent of the damage, deal with insurance, come up with a plan and then wait for some of the specific materials to arrive,” Agnes McCormack says.

The longer piles required are made from hardwood and had to be sourced from overseas as the lengths required were not available in New Zealand.

This repair work involves: ■ repairing the undermined ramp ■ replacing the northern abutment ■ replacing all piles that are not suitable to be re-used ■ lengthening the piles that are not being replaced ■ installing the new pontoons.

The pontoons were among several coastal structures throughout the region damaged during the January storm.

Meanwhile, access to the ramp is being kept open as works allow with at least one lane open at the weekends and two during the week.

One of the key causes of dysfunction in the current MP for Pakuranga Government has been caused by the Employment Relations legislation, which is currently before Parliament.

This legislation will take New Zealand back to the bad-old-days when unions controlled the workplace and there was no flexibility in industrial relations.

National has opposed this Bill and has lodged a series of changes that seek to overturn its worst provisions.

On the one hand Labour sees this Bill as a key credibility test in the eyes of its allies in the Trade Union movement, who fear NZ First will weaken their resolve. On the other hand Winston Peters has hinted at concessions on a Bill he has called a “work in progress” despite it having been through the Cabinet process.

National believes our employment law is worth fighting for and that businesses deserve certainty and clarity from this Government, rather than the dysfunction which is on display.

Good employment law is one of the foundations of New Zealand’s growth and allows flexible, modern workplaces that can compete in a fast-changing global economy.

Preserving New Zealand’s competitive advantages is critical and when we have a Government that seems intent on reversing the hard-earned gains made by New Zealanders, these advantages are put at significant risk.

Business confidence is slumping and both hiring and investment intentions have turned negative.

More than 10,000 jobs a month were created in the two years before the 2017 election. Since the election, this has plummeted to 4000 a month.

National believes a good industrial relations framework and a flexible labour market are critical to a strong and growing economy. That provides the best opportunities for employers and employees and is what we’re fighting hard for.

Our proposed changes would retain 90-day trials for all businesses, stop them from being forced into agreements with unions that would require a business in Auckland to pay the same wages as one in Timaru, and ensure union officials have to get permission to enter a workplace.

The Government’s dysfunction makes it difficult for businesses to plan and is especially troubling for small business owners who do their best to keep afloat, manage their costs, and hopefully create more jobs.

The Government should be focussed on policies that help businesses grow and create more jobs, rather than focusing on themselves and their internal disagreements.

It’s not just international travel that takes up all his time.

The 17-year-old is allowed to take Wednesday’s off school because he is doing an internship as a research assistant at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Auckland.

“I’m part of a community research project to do with molecular biology. It’s still at its introductory stage,” he says.

The young go-getter is also an active part of the Howick Youth Council.

“We’ve spearheaded an event to give 20 high school students in Howick an opportunity to get their First Aid Certificate free of charge,” he says.

Yang Fan is an accomplished musician and plays the cello for two of the school orchestras.

So how does he find time to participate and excel at so many activities?

Barely had Yang Fan Yun returned from Tanzania after representing New Zealand at the International Biology Olympiad that he was preparing for an Economics Olympiad in Moscow from September 13 to 24.

“The International Biology Olympiad was held in Iran this year but due to political sanctions, student representatives from five countries including the US, the UK, Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand went instead to Tanzania and Malawi to carry out ecological research,” says Yang Fan, days prior to taking off to Russia.

Yang Fan will have less than a week to unpack his bags from his international sojourn, before the ace debater heads off to Hawaii.

“Parents shouldn’t push their children but inculcate in them a growth mindset. Mental health is a big issue and it is important to be happy and pursue all the things you love doing,” he says.

He also believes that success doesn’t revolve in the classroom and “natural talent doesn’t have too much to do with excelling at things”.

Case in point is learning how to play the cello. “I wasn’t a great cello player but in my free time I used to watch YouTube

videos and learn,” he says.

The secret he says is hard work with a bit of luck as well as taking a keen interest in different things and being aware of various opportunities available.

As I write this, there is a small note from Yang Fan saying, “If you are interested, I found out today that I also came first out of 2500 students around the country in the New Zealand Economics Competition held by the University of Auckland, in June earlier this year.”

Elim College wins Best Creative Award

by International Languages Exchanges and Pathways and New Zealand Chinese Language Teachers Association.

The short film ‘Hot dog Lovers’ directed by student Georgia Bilby and assisted by camera-woman Alison McWilliams, features a fullclass cast with shared roles and efforts divided amongst the eager Mandarin-learning students.

The film in Mandarin has both English and Mandarin subtitles.

The script involves a plot based on cliché and stereotypical love stories, with a twist... hot-dogs.

The creative take on a typical romance, it stars Year-11 students Musasiyashe Muodza and Jackson Taylor as main characters. Students of the class are tight-knit, with a love for learning the language and “having fun with all things Chinese,” says Year 11 student,

Teacher Karen Liu, who has taught Mandarin for more than 10 years at the college, gave students a free reign of the non-assessed project just before she went on a six-week’s leave and was very impressed with their efforts once she was back at school.

Mandarin is a compulsory subject in Year 9 at the school, with many students voluntarily continuing to pursue it further.

Prizegiving for the event will be held at the University of Auckland Epsom Campus this Friday, revealing all the winners of categories.

Psychoactive substances review due The Government needs to explain why it hasn’t started a review into the Psychoactive Substances legislation despite it being legally required to, Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown says.

“When the National Government passed the law to make synthetic drugs illegal, it added a clause that the law must be reviewed every five years, said Brown.

GMT acquires strategic site for $93m Goodman Property Trust (GMT), the NZX-listed industrial and office property owner, has bought the Foodstuffs Distribution Centre in Mt Roskill for $93 million.

Goodman (NZ), the manager of GMT, which owns Highbrook Business Park, said acquiring the asset extends its investment in the buoyant Auckland industrial market.

his year’s Grad Gala Concerto Competition hosted by the University of Auckland’s School of Music later this month will have an extra finalist vying for the top prize worth $6000, due to the exceptional standard of the entrants.

The popular annual concert held to celebrate Graduation traditionally has three finalists, but the judges for the semi-final round were so impressed with the contestants, that they have selected four – including a musician from East Tamaki – to proceed through to the finals.

The young musicians who will perform in the historic Auckland Town Hall are April Ju on violin, Moon Su (Arnold) Lee from East Tamaki on piano, Noah Rudd on oboe, and Jisu (Jessica) Yun playing the flute. All four are students studying at the School of Music.

The free concert attracts large audiences and will be opened by the University of Auckland Massed Choir, directed by Dr Karen Grylls, performing Te Quiero by Favero and Bach’s Come Sweet Death, arranged by Rhonda Sandberg. The gala will also see performances from the School of Music Jazz Big Band and popular music students.

Full steam ahead for the needy

t least two dozen meals were donated to feed hungry families recently thanks to a group of students at Somerville Intermediate.

Twenty five kids spent five days designing, planning and creating much needed fresh food parcels as part of their STEAM project.

The STEAM project is about doing something good for the community, while also incorporating the use of science, technology, engineering art and maths.

Each student involved opted into the project by choice because they wanted to do something meaningful for the community.

One of the students, Molly, says: “We had to think about which meals would make the greatest difference to the people who will be eating them so we came up with meals that

would last the longest, feed the most people and be the most filling.”

The students found recipes and ingredients that would make a meal to feed a family of four for under $15.

They had to ensure the meal included protein, carbohydrates and vegetables.

They held a practice run last Tuesday so the students could familiarise themselves with the recipes, and have the dishes taste tested by a teacher of their choice.

Last week the proud students got to hand over their fresh food parcels to the South Auckland branch of the St Vincent de Paul Society - a charity which looks after those in need in our community.

Teacher Debbie Thorpe who led the students says this project has really opened up the students eyes to the simple things they can do to help other people.

“It takes a village to run a village” is the motto among volunteers at the Howick historical Village, a sentiment Charmaine Chapman can’t agree with more.

She describes her job as marketing and events team leader at the village as multi-faceted with no two days alike, looking after promotions and publicity, advertising, sales and marketing as well as tourism.

Charmaine is now also the chairperson of East Auckland Tourism and wears many hats. Her job involves working closely with ATEED and the Howick Local Board, and has expanded now to include Auckland Transport, Franklin Local board, Franklin Tourism, Clevedon business association and would like to work more closely with the Howick Business Association, driving the exciting East Auckland Tourism initiative.

Charmaine is a former teacher who arrived in New Zealand 20 years ago, from Durban, South Africa and lives in Howick.

The talented pianist discovered event marketing when she completed her Masters of Arts Management degree at Whitecliffe College of Arts

and design in Mount Eden, central Auckland.

“My motto in life is to be consistent and committed in everything I do, and if I can’t put 100 per cent effort in, then I re-evaluate and make changes.

I too have mastered the art of being persistent, nothing is easy and all good things take time. I’m very goal driven and always setting bigger and better targets for myself, sometimes I drive myself crazy, it’s a laugh.”

Charmaine and her team run the Meet the Villagers Live Days at the village each month as well as our popular Halloween evening on October 27.

She is constantly looking for new business and ways to increase the village income and believes that tourism out East is going to start bringing in more visitors, not only to the village but to all businesses out East, “we do need the businesses to support us in this for it to be successful”, she says.

“You will often hear me muttering ‘It’s all good fun!’ and that’s what keeps me going – laughter, taking wee breaks during the day, disturbing my staff with my funny (not) jokes and being mind-full.”

New strategy for Stockade Hill I am a member of a group of five committed individuals who have pooled resources to hire an experienced Barrister to research thoroughly what avenues we now have, as we continue the battle to keep iconic Stockade Hill out of the reach of Auckland Council’s wrecking ball.

As the client, we are sending him as much information as we can about the journey so far, and our initial goal is to know what grounds we have and therefore what chances there are of a successful appeal, presumably to the Environment Court. He is also providing us with an estimate of ongoing costs, which is a key factor.

It was very clear from yesterday’s (Sunday’s) well-attended public meeting that the public don’t want to give up the fight, even though it will mean a concerted campaign from here on to crowd-fund the process.

Despite claims that “Plan Change 3” is an important win, it actually isn’t, as Stockade Hill’s existing 360 degree views are in every meaningful way gone, and the high buildings that are permitted to surround it will eventually conceal the hill itself from view.

I support this initiative as a last ditch stand to protect the status quo.

Battle of Britain fly-past Did you manage to catch the Battle of Britain flypast over Auckland on Sunday September 16?

How much freedom for freedom campers?

I have difficulty in understanding the council plans to allow freedom campers overnight free sites to rest and attend to all those personal things they need to do .

The first question is, do we wish to welcome travellers to Howick? Yes .

Do we think that they should stay in public areas overnight?

No. I and many others swim at high tide at Howick Beach early in the morning. Some walk, others drive to the beach if there is parking space.

The mind boggles to arrive at 7.30am and find a crowd of campers in their vans awaking for the day, crowding into the changing rooms and cooking up breakfast .

The whole idea is all crazy. I presume that “ freedom campers “ are people with vans or tents who arrive to enjoy free facilities .And I also presume [a terrible word ] that all people are welcome, no matter from where they arrive, including Kiwis like me.

28th Battalion Memorial

Shane Jones is proposing to fund {with taxpayers) money a memorial to the 28th Battalion on the Treaty Grounds at Waitangi.

If there is going to be a memorial to fallen soldiers at the Treaty grounds, it should be for all the fallen not just one battalion of the NZ Army.

The Treaty grounds were gifted to all the people of New Zealand not just Maori and, as such, any memorial should represent all the people who served.

There is already a memorial to the 28th Battalion at Gisborne so why another one?

A reader’s query to the Times complaining about the state of the uneven surface of cobbles on Picton Street received this reply from Auckland Transport. The reader said someone had tripped on the cobble stones and that the footpath was “in very bad condition”.

Auckland Transport said: “We received a service request to repair uneven cobbles stones on the 9 September, the repair was carried out on the next day. Our contractor carries out regular inspections of the paving and carries out repairs as needed. The cobble stones in Howick town centre are in acceptable condition.”

Kiwi wealth transfer hits some roadblocks K

iwi parents are finding it harder than ever to help their children buy homes because certain bank lending requirements mean that asset wealth is no longer good enough for mainstream financiers.

CEO of New Zealand’s largest peer-to-peer mortgage lender, Southern Cross Partners, Luke Jackson, said it has steadily become harder and harder for parents to use their assets to guarantee the next generation’s transition into property via main trading banks.

“It is still possible but not easy because, back in the day, banks could asset lend in the comfort that they would be repaid. Asset rich parents were not assessed on their ability to repay the loan – the asset was good enough.

“However, in the current environment, the banks – or at least their auto-decisioning software – wants to know that the parents (or whoever else is repaying the loan) havethe income to service the mortgage if something goes wrong. Of course, when people are retired or close to retiring, they’re asset rich but income poor,” Jackson said.

One way some banks are approaching the problem is to require that the parents and the children enter the mortgage as co-borrowers. The parents put

up the security, and the kids make the repayments.

“The problem with co-borrowing is that it is ambiguous as to who owns what. For example, how does the co-borrowing and property co-ownership arrangement work, what are the entitlements of each party on the sale of the property and what happens if there’s a falling out?”

Jackson said another option is to ask the parents to raise the deposit by borrowing against their property.

For example, a daughter and her husband may be buying a house for $1 million, but they have only saved $50,000.

Her parents could borrow the $150,000 against their property.

“The result is that we have a couple who have worked hard all their lives – and are getting to a point where they can consider retiring on what they have built – when suddenly they find themselves in debt again for a significant amount of money. The children will pay – most of the time – but there is still the risk factor because life happens,” Jackson said.

“Previously, all parents needed to do was provide a guarantee against their assets – even for a second sibling – and the debt would still be all in the children’s names.”

Can Mum and Dad still use their assets for the kids?

Jackson said the lack of ‘wealth transfer products’ and the failure of banks to consider applications on a more personal, case-by-case basis (even when the deal makes sense from a commercial decision perspective), was contributing to a boom for non-bank lenders.

“At Southern Cross Partners our lending has grown by more than 20 per cent year-on-year in part because of the one-sizefits-all way many mainstream banks are assessing lending deals, including the provision for wealth transfer type loan structures.

KPMG’s Financial Institutions Performance Survey in New Zealand – confirms that the non-banking sector had seen significant growth as high as the mid-teens, starting about 18 months ago.

see mainstream banks aren’t sucking up most of the mortgage applications. People who have never had a ‘no’ from the bank in their lives are suddenly finding themselves declined,” the report said.

The report goes on to say that reasons for the conservative approach by mainstream banks was precipitated by lending restrictions in Australia that make it difficult for parent banks to lend to their New Zealand banks, and much tighter scrutiny of mortgage applications.

“We have an ageing population and a climate that makes it increasingly difficult to facilitate inter-generational wealth transfer. Older people who have retired and have no income from a job as such, but who are asset rich, nevertheless are being told ‘no’,” the KPMG report said.

A record number of consents A

uckland Council has released the findings of an independent review into its capability to meet the demands of unprecedented growth in current and future building consent numbers.

The independent report – Review of the Auckland Council Building Consents Meeting Demand Programme was commissioned by Auckland Council to ensure that its plans and actions to address current and future challenges are robust and fit for purpose.

The findings, released this week, confirm that the council is on the right track but suggests it needs to accelerate efforts in key areas including forecasting, recruitment and systems to meet the demands of increasing consent numbers.

Consents demand

In the 2017/2018 financial year around 12,300 new dwellings were consented, the highest since September 2004 and the amount of commercial and industrial space consented in the last 12 months is 64 per cent more than the previous year.

Penny Pirrit, director of regulatory services, says Auckland’s unprecedented growth is driving the highest consents demand in a decade.

“In May 2018, about 1500 new residential dwellings were consented, a new record for that month which followed a similarly record-breaking result in the previous month.

“These record numbers are combined with consent applications taking longer to process because they are more complicated than ever before.

“The shift to more medium and higher density developments to accommodate the city’s growth means the number of housing units per consent application has increased by 10 per cent in the last 12 months,” says Mrs Pirrit.

This year the council started implementing the Meeting Demand programmewith projects to improve workflow management, monitoring and reporting.

The council also increased its external contracted resource by 30

“Given the high volumes of consents and the increase in complex applications, the report identifies our staff are working hard to deliver results in a challenging and high pressure environment.

“However, we recognise that we are not currently meeting statutory timeframes or delivering the customer service that we are striving to achieve. However, we are proactively addressing the issues while also preparing for the future demands of Auckland’s unprecedented growth,” says Mrs Pirrit.

Recommendations

The report recommends a greater focus is needed to: ■■ Refine and reposition the current Meeting Demand Programme ■■ Improve forecasting ■■ Scale up recruitment ■■ Ensure fit for purpose systems ■■ Form a dedicated team tasked with driving implementation of the programme.

“The council supports the report’s findings and many of its recommendations are already being delivered as part of our ongoing programme,” says Mrs Pirrit.

“The council has already set up a dedicated project team to prioritise and implement actions of the Meeting Demand programme.. “This includes development of a more sophisticated model to support better workforce planning, increasing staff resource by recruiting here and overseas and better utilising remote workers and private consultancies.

“We are always looking to improve our current systems to ensure they can meet the trends of larger volumes of more complex consents. This includes integrating our systems for 95 per cent of our online building services to reduce effort, duplication, and errors by the end of November 2018.

“The steps we have taken are already seeing improvements in meeting statutory timeframes and the council will be reporting on this more in November.”

Jeff is loving life despite dementia

wenty two years ago Howick local Jeff Attwood had a thriving business as an electronic engineer.

He was fit and active and had just purchased his first Morris Minor car with big plans to restore and take it on a road trip around New Zealand.

But life had other plans for Jeff.

At age 54, he was diagnosed with early onset vascular dementia.

“Back then nobody knew about dementia and it was really hard to get people to understand what we were going through,” says Jeff’s wife Doreen.

“So many friends said to me, ‘but he looks perfectly fine.’ And it was sad because when you have a broken arm nobody questions it but when there is something wrong with your brain, people are sceptical.”

Jeff said he only had two options – give up or get on with it.

And it was an easy choice, he says.

“It was a big adjustment but I really wanted to continue doing the things I loved,” he says.

He decided to start with the Morris Minor car he had purchased and after he retired he focused his energy on restoring the old classic.

He later went on to travel the length of the country in it and

“It means so much to see people and businesses start to understand dementia and be patient and caring towards those living with it,” says Doreen.

Jeff has only recently handed over his banking to Doreen after a stroke made his cheque signature too shaky.

The couple also made contact with Dementia Auckland and says the support they have received has been immense.

Jeff participates in Dementia Auckland’s Cognitive Stimulation Therapy classes to help manage his dementia and improve his quality of life.

Through Dementia Auckland the pair has been able to connect with others going through the same experience and make lifelong friends through support and activity groups.

“The men’s group is my favourite because we get to play indoor sports and it brings everyone together,” Jeff says.

September is World Alzheimer’s Month and Friday 21st September is World Alzheimer’s Day. Dementia Auckland is running “get togethers” all across the city to open up the conversation lines about dementia and also to raise funds for the organisation.

ith the Springboks showing their old steely resolve to prick the All Blacks’ winning bubble 36-34 in Wellington on Saturday night, world rugby was enriched by what was a titanic contest.

It also served as a warning to critics who claimed New Zealand would win a third consecutive World Cup in Japan next year that form is a fickle lady in which fate can depend on the unpredictable bounce of an oval ball.

Not that it was luck that carried South Africa to victory, though some bad All Black decisions contributed to the visitors deserved success, such as not trying to convert penalties or reverting to a field goal at the death.

There was also that reckless quick lineout throw by Jordie Barrett that gifted alert opposing fullback Willie le Roux his try.

But nothing could detract from the Springboks’ gutsy defence and growing self-belief.

Just how much that meant to them could be seen in the tears of joy and relief that flowed after the final whistle before which their try-line was under siege.

In the end, the All Blacks scored six tries to South Africa’s five but Beauden Barrett could convert just two and missed some easy ones. That possibly

In the end it was a deserved Springboks win, sportingly acknowledged by All Blacks coach Steve Hansen after the heroics of captain Siya Kolisi, No 8 Warren Whiteley, hooker Malcolm Marx, halfback Faf de Klerk, speedy wing Aphiwe Dyantyi and the livewire Le Roux.

It is a good time for the All Blacks to have a fortnight’s break before trying to clinch the Rugby Championship by playing Argentina and South Africa abroad.

Not for the first time did the team that won possession and territory lose the game with the All Blacks reaching 75 per cent and 79 per cent respectively and the Springboks having to make an incredible 235 tackles to their 61.

Having proved match winners so often, it is not fair to blame the gifted Barrett brothers for this loss although Ben Smith still looks best suited to

Ready for Bathurst After a stand-out appearance there last year, Dannemora’s Andre Heimgartner is counting the days to the upcoming Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 after a Rabble.

Club Sandown 500 weekend which was a lot more valuable than may have appeared on the surface.

Heimgartner, based in Melbourne, and co-driver Aaren Russell drove the #7 ACE Kangan Nissan Motorsport Altima to 14th position in Sunday’s 500km race despite Russell being turned around by another competitor while in sixth position.

The result follows on from an impressive Saturday which saw Heimgartner qualify the car in 6th position for the first of the two races for the grid, with Russell then taking the #7 to victory in the ‘co-drivers’ rain and hail-affected

fullback which would allow game breaker Waisake Naholo to return to right wing.

On the other wing, Rieko Ioane celebrated his return from a hamstring injury with two sharply taken tries but needed more ball in the second half.

As usual, Ryan Crotty and Anton Lienert-Brown were rock solid in the midfield but lacked the sharp cutting edge of substitute Jack Goodhew.

In exercising strength and determination in scoring a late try, Ardie Savea also added thrust to a forward pack in which unsung hooker Codie Taylor continues to thrive in the absence of Dane Coles.

Although South Africa will have gained much needed confidence from their win under new coach Rassie Erasmus, the All Blacks should better appreciate the need to take better options.

Meanwhile Kiwi petrol heads had cause to celebrate Scott Dixon’s fifth IndyCar championship triumph in America by sealing it at Sonoma Raceway on Monday when finishing runner-up behind Ryan Hunter-Reay.

The 38-year-old Chip Ganassi Racing driver also won in 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2015 and is only two shy of the record set by AJ Foyt.

race before Heimgartner finished sixth in the main drivers’ final stoush for the Sandown 500 grid positions. “On Friday we focused on getting as much car speed engineered into the car as possible while getting Aaren comfortable at the wheel before coming out on Saturday and giving it our all across the extended qualifying format for today’s race,” Heimgartner said. “(As we head to Bathurst) The car is fast and we have done a lot of great work this weekend which I think will allow us to head to the Mountain feeling strong and ready to do battle.”

Heimgartner will next be on-track with Nissan Motorsport and the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, from October 4-7.

ucklands Beach Intermediate has had another very successful AIMS Games Tournament in Tauranga this year.

BBI deputy principal Ed Roper said: “After finishing first on the medal table last year we were very proud to back up a second place this year.

“We took a large team down again this year and there was some fantastic sport played.

After a very busy week, with students starting games at 7:45am and finishing at 8pm, the students performed extremely well. It was a very exciting week-long Games, well-organised and run. We look forward to challenging Tauranga Intermediate and the other schools in a year’s time.

Pak College shines at swim nationals

Pakuranga College’s Swim Team continues to dominate the pool, after finishing their most successful New Zealand Secondary Schools Swimming Championships to date.

Eleven of Pakuranga College’s top swimmers travelled to Wellington at the weekend to compete at the four-day championship ending on Sunday.

In amongst more than 100 other school teams, 600 swimmers and 46 events, the team made their mark on the national stage.

By the end of the second day, the team had secured three gold medals, three silver medals and three bronze. They continued their good form and scored high with six gold, five silver and four bronze in the final two days.

The total medal haul of 24 ensured that Pakuranga College finished second overall co-ed school at the championship, and the five boys came in third out of 64 in the boys points trophy.

There were a few individual stand outs over the weekend, with Year 9 Michael Han getting 11 medals in the male 13-year-old age category, and Year 10 Ryan Oliver bringing home six medals in the male 15-year-old age group.

Howick Village Denture Studio Grand Opening It was all smiles at the opening of Howick Village Denture Studio on Wednesday night! Guests were treated with fine food and music at the Apothecary in Howick before heading over to the vibrant new studio to officially open the practice. It was also the unveiling of a stunning new artwork that was painted especially for the Studio by Taranaki master artist Ross Bennett.

by Ray Bishop and band and by the special guest for the evening Mr Colin Mathura Jefree who delighted and dazzled with his wit and charm.
