he man who killed mother-oftwo Chozyn Koroheke, 22, in Pakuranga last year has been jailed for life.

Turiarangi Tai appeared in the High Court at Auckland on Friday and was sentenced to a minimum non-parole period of 17 years by Justice Matthew Muir.

In his sentencing notes, the judge said Tai and the deceased had been in a relationship for several

months. They rented a property on Pakuranga Highway with three others including Ms Koroheke’s brother Naycn and his girlfriend.

Tai and Ms Koroheke’s relationship was a dysfunctional and mistrustful one, the judge said, characterised by frequent argumaants often brought on by mutual suspicions of unfaithfulness.

At trial there was significant evidence of Tai’s escalating domestic violence towards Ms Koroheke over the period of their relationship.

“This included an incident where he stabbed her in the leg,” Justice Muir said.

“Mr Tai denied he was physically violent to her but I am satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that a pattern of physical and emotional abuse was established.”

The night before each had socialised separately at friends’ addresses and Tai, who had been associationed with the gang the Crips, had stayed up all night consuming alcohol and methamphetamine.

he Clevedon Protection Society (CPS) says it achieved the best outcome for the community in its long battle with civil construction company Fulton Hogan’s resource consent application to expand operations at Clevedon Quarry.

The long-awaited hearing, which began in December, was to determine whether resource consent could be granted to increase production from the McNicol Road quarry from 200,000 tonnes per annum to 3 million tonnes per annum.

Residents cited concerns over heavy truck and trailer movements which they say would increase from 100 per day, to 1306 per day. Locals claimed the roads were unsuitable to handle such heavy truck traffic and wanted the number of trucks on the roads to be reduced.

“Overall CPS is satisfied that it achieved the best outcome for the Clevedon community given the very permissive nature of the quarry provisions within the Auckland Unitary Plan,” a spokesperson said.

“We faced an uncertain outcome if the matter was taken further to a full Environment Court hearing, although we were prepared to take that risk if an agreement could not be reached.”

Given the early gains made in the

first two days of mediation, the CPS sought expert legal advice and ultimately determined that reaching a mediated agreement was in the best long-term interests of the Clevedon community.

“CPS is pleased that it appealed the commissioners decision as we have achieved significant improvements to the conditions of consent, along with a significant reduction in operating hours and truck numbers, which was a fundamental outcome we were seeking,” the group said.

“CPS is now looking forward to actively participating in the Community Liaison Group which is being established to oversee compliance and to engage with the broader Clevedon community to help mitigate the adverse effects from the quarry expansion.

“CPS has established a strong community-focused organisation which is prepared to take action to achieve better community and environment outcomes. We have a very strong desire to continue the momentum and to ensure that the unique character and rural environment of Clevedon is protected for future generations.”

Upon presenting the recommendations to the Howick Local Board, they caught the attention of Deputy Mayor Bill Cashmore who organised the meeting with AT. Tarapore says the meeting went well with AT representatives listening to her concerns, but says it was obvious that it is very hard for them to reverse changes they have already made.

“It seems the old transport system does not fit with the new vision of transport which involves a lot of feeder buses onto the main bus line. This was very sad to hear from someone who thought the old transport system was very good,” she says.

“The main restriction is that Auckland Transport only wants one bus to be travelling from Panmure to Britomart which means only one suburb winsand in this case Botany clearly won.”

She says AT did acknowledge that the new network doesn’t benefit everyone, and says they would look at increasing the frequency of the 735 bus which travels from Botany to Half Moon Bay. Tarapore says she just hopes that in the future Auckland Transport has a thorough consultation with more people from different suburbs so that this

situation never arises again.

“It’s hard to say if we have actually bought any improvements to the transport system,” Tarapore says. “But for me the next step will be making sure citizens are well informed, because I really think that if citizens had been informed properly about the changes that occurred we could be looking at a very different picture.

Fuel tax to cost us $1.5bn more With Auckland’s regional fuel tax coming into effect this week, National’s transport spokesperson Jami-Lee Ross says the cost of living in Auckland is set to skyrocket.

He says Aucklanders will be paying a total of up to $1.5 billion more for petrol, Ross says.

The fuel tax will hit those on lower incomes the hardest – almost four times as hard as those on higher incomes, he says.

“Transport Minister Phil Twyford’s spin that it will cost people on low incomes less ignores the fact that they spend a greater proportion of their income on petrol so the tax hike will have a bigger impact on their ability to pay the bills, at a time of already record fuel prices.

“This tax is unfair and unnecessary. Auckland Council could easily find the money that the fuel tax would raise if it followed through on Mayor Phil Goff’s promise to find 3-6

per cent of savings in its budget.

“Instead, Twyford has given Auckland Council licence to tax and spend, and it is hardworking Aucklanders who will be paying the cost.”

Ross says national would repeal this tax and have a plan to address the transport needs of Auckland without imposing new taxes.

National had already committed to projects like the Eastern Busway, Penlink, Mill Road and improvements to the Northern Busway, he says.

He says the major difference in National’s plans for Auckland is that they wouldn’t be spending billions of taxpayers’ dollars into a tram to the airport.

“This is an outrageous tax and it never should have been imposed,” he says.

recent meeting between the Howick Youth Council and Auckland Transport (AT) has sparked hope among east Auckland youth of greater transparency around transport projects in the future.

The topics of discussion included the possibility of restoring direct bus routes from Bucklands Beach and Cockle Bay to the city, transparency around future public transport initiatives, and how AT can better engage the local community.

The Howick Youth Council, under the Howick Local Board, handed over a set of proposals for AT to consider.

The recommendations included restoring some direct bus routes, increasing the frequency of local services and trains, improved shelter at Panmure station, and how AT could better include youth in transport decisions.

The proposals were established from local student Khorshed Tarapore’s petition to save east Auckland bus routes which amassed more than 1500 signatures and hundreds of comments (Howick & Pakuranga Times, May 10).

The petition caught the attention of Youth Advisory Panel chairperson and Howick representative Veisinia Maka who says she was amazed at how many young people cared about transport.

“At the time, the long term plan was up for consultation and when I looked up what the Howick Local Board’s priorities were for the long term plan I was disappointed to find transport wasn’t high on the list,” she says.

“I reached out to Khorshed and told her I thought this would be a great opportunity to use her petition as a starting point and write some recommendations for the Howick Local Board on how to prioritise transport.”

Kate Hatley’s short film From a Hospital Bed, captures hitting rock bottom after falling off a skateboard and the agony of struggling to walk again over the next two years

A

fall from a skateboard changed Kate Hatley’s life forever.

She didn’t think much of it initially but four to five weeks later, the Botany Downs Secondary College student realised that something was drastically wrong.

Kate was diagnosed with a disorder of the central nervous system. She suffered from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome characterised by intense pain, fatigue and disability.

“I lost the ability to stand and walk, making it necessary for me to use a wheelchair for the following two years,” says the 16-year-old.

The accident happened in

October 2015 and she still hasn’t fully recovered.

“My journey has been incredibly challenging. I was hospitalised for five months and had intensive rehab. It was hard for me to keep going as I was in a wheel chair till January 2018.

“In March 2017 I fell out of my wheelchair and had to be hospitalised again.”

Kate hit rock bottom when she went back to hospital.

“I was jealous of people leading normal lives ... the last two years of my life were just lost.

“It’s an extremely hard place to be in and to overcome something like that involves a huge change of mindset and attitude.”

It took a long time for Kate

to get out of the dark hole but sitting in her hospital bed one day, she made up her mind that she had to keep going.

“I decided to use my experience and turn it into something that other people can understand.”

A media student who hopes to become a journalist someday, she made a short film Lessons from a Hospital Bed and has entered the four-minute20-second film in the Focus on Ability 2018 Short Film Festival.

The international festival asks filmmakers to focus on the abilities of people with disabilities and tell a story.

“The character, Alex is based on some of my experiences from the time I was first admitted to hospital to when

I regained independent mobility. Although my journey has been harrowing, I am grateful for the lessons I have learnt,” says Kate.

“Through the incredibly difficult journey I have met some amazing people and learnt so much about life and myself.

“If not for this experience, I would not be who I am today.

“Through my film, I intend to provide insight into my journey with health and what it has taught me. I do hope people vote for my film,” she says.

Kate also hopes to convey that not all disabilities are visible.

➤➤From page 1 Ms Koroheke had earlier used Tai’s car for shopping. On her return he packed his things and he left but returned as the car was on empty. He was “clearly enraged” she’d not refuelled the car.

“Chozyn saw him returning with the gun and retreated...to the bedroom saying “he’s coming back in with a shotgun” or words to that effect,” the judge said.

Nacyn tried to get her into a cupboard. Tai entered the house and pushed the door open.

“He pointed the shotgun at Chozyn’s head and poked her in the cheek saying words to the effect ‘do you think I’m all shit?’ He then lowered the gun to her abdomen and pulled the trigger.”

Forensic evidence established there was no malfunction with the gun. Tai attempted CPR and tried to staunch the blood loss and kept repeating “stay awake, stay with me, fight, Chozyn”...

“Soon, however, Mr Tai’s apparent remorse turned into self-interest. He told (Nacyn’s girlfriend) “you didn’t see anything”.

He left in his car. She died shortly after being moved from the house into the waiting ambulance. Tai was on the run for almost two weeks.

Tai, 22 at the time, has a lengthy criminal history including several convictions for violent offending. He has been in institutional care most of his life and was a victim of sustained physical abuse by his father from the age of five.

“He presents today as a recidivist, violent and somewhat cowardly thug, but one fashioned by his background,” Justice Muir said, reiterating the “scourge” that family violence has become in New Zealand society”.

“The serial abuse to which she had been subjected and the level of control administered at the end of Mr Tai’s fist, knee, one occasion a knife, on another a rock and further at the end of a steel pole, had reduced her to a point where, as (her father) said this morning, I am satisfied “the courage had been beaten out of her”.”

Local designers at Fashion Week I

t’s all about graduating with flying colours. Thirty-five students from NZ Fashion Tech were given a fashion paint colour from Resene.

Within four weeks 35 intricately detailed looks were woven, smocked, crushed, quilted, embroidered, draped, pleated and bunched into extraordinary works of silk.

The top 17 were selected by judges to show on the Resene Designer Runway this Fashion Week and include Amber Sterritt and Tessa Gould. Both went to Howick College and live in Howick and Beachlands respectively.

by New Zealand’s freshest young design talent. Their work is inspired by a brief which takes their creative thought into an edgy contemporary world of colour and design, refuses ‘to bow to the convention of ordinary’ and embodies uplifting themes of feminine empowerment.

On judging day last week, judges Doris de Pont, Resene marketing manager Karen Warman, Founder of NZ Fashion Tech Val Marshall-Smith and guest judge Janey Evett of New Zealand Fashion Week tried to narrow the finalists down to 15.

We smashed the target of $1000 and raised $2102 for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. A total of a whopping $640 was raised at Taffy’s Pink Ribbon Party hosted at Ormiston Cafe that afternoon from raffle ticket sales and donations. The donations we received from the community were so, so amazing, I couldn’t believe the beauty and generosity that surrounds us here in east Auckland.

Ormiston Café generously donated $175 to Pink Ribbon! I was blown away by the generosity and support as New World Botany donated an amazing food hamper packed with goodies; SkyCity donated some really outstanding prize packs; Dunkin Donuts head office donated 4 x 6 pack vouchers of donuts; Carmen Hui Beauty donated over $2000 worth of gifts for massages, make up and facial treatments; Esthy Carlisle Gifts & Co created an individual boxed gift for all the 50 guests who attended the event.

Also a 10 per cent discount for all drinks plus a $175 donation from Ormiston Cafe! It was a pink afternoon of festivities, fun, food, tears and sisterhood within the community.

I cannot speak highly enough about the support that Sanjay Luthra of Ormiston Cafe gave us - what good value he is to our community. His team were absolutely fabulous.

They exclusively hosted us so well and were so professional in tallying up all the proceeds from the event after the Party. All the guests are already excited for the next event.

Thank you Times for being a part of my journey - that article you wrote about the Pink Ribbon party created so much awareness and excitement within the community.

How many people buy a house in a relatively quiet neighbourhood expecting peace for little children only to find they are next door to party central.

That is exactly what has happened in Prince Regent Drive to two families who bought next to the local landmark, the ‘Castle del la mar’.

They have, between them, five children, one, a baby.

As for the rest of the nearby neighbours, the party that went on last Saturday night (June 23) was the noisiest, most obnoxious affair we have ever heard.

The calls to the council noise control started at 8pm and I was one of the later calls at 4:50am.

The fact I could not sleep, being three houses away and across the street behind another house and shielded by double glazing should give you an idea of the intensity of the onslaught.

The situation has been ongoing for many years of complaints, with the manager of the property and through her offshore owner in Hong Kong, the police and the council noise control. The house is not lived in and being clearly used as a venue for people to meet at a central location, with an outside pool and very loud entertainment facilities provided.

The police and noise control attended twice, removing sound systems both times, eventually leaving the culprits with only their still very loud car systems to destroy their clearly insensitive hearing still more.

We may have rapid transit bus routes, a railway to the airport, a super sport venue, whatever! But living near a residential cacophony seems too much for the council officers, even backed up by police to effectively shut down.

Why, oh why, do council not have the teeth to prevail. Why do they effectively subcontract this clear duty to other services?

Local politicians should perhaps be more inclined, instead of kissing babies before elections, to nurture the mother and the child, who was awake, vomiting all night with fear because of the loudness and vile crudity that was happening metres away from his bedroom.

Exotic birds big and small on show

ore than 520 exotic birds of different breeds will be showing off their plumage at the 109th Annual Bird Show.

To be held at Ormiston Senior College on July 7 and 8, the show is hosted by the Auckland Metro Bird Club, one of the oldest clubs in New Zealand.

This year there are a handful of young members showing off their winged friends, including 14-year-old Renee Murphy—one of the five junior members of the club. The Saint Kentigern College student says that she’s had quite a few finches and quails since she was little.

However, this is the first bird show she is entering in the junior under-16 category.

She still hasn’t decided on the birds that will be entering the competition.

“I will bring four- five birds to the club and get advice from the more experienced members on which ones to enter in the competition,” she says.

“It’s a really good hobby if you love animals and you get to meet really wonderful people. Everyone in the club has been very helpful and is happy to share

The Year 10 student has a collection of around 40 birds in an aviary at a lifestyle block she lives on. The aviary houses a colourful and exotic mix of zebra finches, Bengalese finches, Gouldian finches, Chinese quail, lovebirds and cordon-bleus.

While Renee is a bit partial to a particular bird that is “quite fearless and gorgeous” who loves sitting in her hair and even occasionally likes to bite, she says that all birds are very different.

“I love their singing, the bird song and the brilliant colours.

Sometimes it’s lovely to watch lovebirds look after each other.”

Renee makes it a point to attend bird events but doesn’t take her birds for showing mainly “because it would stress them out”.

Right now she is excited that she has two pairs of love birds sitting on eggs. “It’s the first time.”

Senior member of the bird club Dave Nicholson says they will also have a fish display. There will be birds on sale as well.

Time for kids to get their hands dirty Entries this week officially opened to the Young Gardener of the Year Awards and Kiwi kids nationwide, along with their primary schools, are encouraged to enter.

eal-time statistics from realestate.co.nz show across the country, new property listings fell in 15 of the 19 regions in June, which represents a 9.9 per cent drop compared to June last year.

Nationally, there were a total of 8,136 new property listings.

“Three regions recorded alltime new listing lows in June compared to the previous year,” realestate.co.nz spokesperson Vanessa Taylor.

These were the Gisborne (down 41.4 per cent, 41 listings), West Coast (down 25.8 per cent, 49 listings) and the Wairarapa region (down 27 per cent, 84 listings).

New property listings in the Auckland region for the month of June fell 14.8 per cent (2,936 new listings) compared to June 2017.

“We haven’t seen Auckland new listings under 3,000 for the month of June since 2014,” says Taylor.

New listings fell in every region in the North Island apart from Wellington, which recorded a 5.5 per cent increase (574 listings) compared with June 2017.

A good sign for the capital city.

In the South Island, three

of the seven regions recorded increases in new listings compared to June 2017.

Nelson & Bays was up 16.1 per cent (166 new listings), Marlborough up 10.6 per cent (94 new listings) and Canterbury up 3.2 per cent (1,089 new listings).

“Typically, in winter we hibernate, and this June was no exception with cold weather felt across the country,” says Vanessa.

“The reality is that people want to sell their property when they feel that it’s looking its best and potential buyers are more likely to go out to open homes.”

Asking prices remain stable nationally, but Auckland region falls back to 2017 levels While asking prices in June were stable nationally (average asking price $646,231 representing a 0.3 per cent decrease on May 2018), June was a month where a small number of regions impacted on asking pricing levels.

In the Auckland region in June, asking prices fell 2.4 per cent to $931,339 compared to the prior month.

The last time that asking prices were at this level

(around the $930,000 mark) was in the spring of 2017 (August, September, October 2017).

Also notable in June was the narrowing of the gap in asking prices between the Auckland and Central/Otago Lakes regions.

The Central Otago/ Lakes region’s asking prices increased 3.7 per cent to a little over $900,000 compared to the average asking price in the Auckland region which stood at just over $930,000.

“We often see these two regions dance for the top spot in average asking price and June sees the gap narrow again.

“The $30,000 difference speaks more about the individual strengths of an attractive lifestyle region and a major metropolitan hub,” she says.

Taranaki region in a classic supply and demand situation “The star performer on asking price front in June was the Taranaki region,” says Taylor.

Asking prices were up 13.1 per cent in June to $455,636 compared to the prior month.

“This is a classic supply and demand profile,” she says.

Buyer interest holds steady In last month’s realestate. co.nz report, the results of research commissioned by the company was released showing there were many more buyers than sellers intending to be active in the New Zealand property market in the next 12 months. * “We said at the time that this would put increasing pressure on housing stock in the next 12 months,” says Taylor.

“Our own tracking of unique visitors to our website is also reflecting this research,” she says.

More than 800,000 unique users** visited realestate.co.nz in June.

“With 22,605 homes for sale on the site in June, it shows that the property market is still busy, despite the cooler months,” says Vanessa.

“Our users spend an average of 8:11 minutes on site viewing more than eight pages per session.

“It’s fair to say New Zealanders are still active in the property market,” she says.

s part of the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s (RNZB) outreach and educational events this week, a Dancing with Mozart programme will feature from Friday until Sunday at the Aotea Centre.

The RNZB will take the opportunity to visit the wider region.

On Monday and Tuesday this week the RNZB presented “Ballet in a Box” at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau. This is relaxed performance catering for autistic children and adults and people with intellectual disabilities and promotes a more casual attitude to noise and movement in the auditorium. Dancers will mingle with audience members in the foyer and there will be an opportunity to see the costumes close-up.

The finalists of the 2018 Estuary Art and Ecology Prize have been selected and the works will be on display at Malcolm Smith Gallery from Saturday 7 July.

Artists have used a variety of mediums to respond to the ecology of the Estuary and the 2018 finalists’ exhibition includes painting, photography and sculpture, making for a very diverse show.

A number of this year’s submissions include materials and samples taken directly from the Tamaki Estuary, such as water, pollen and mud found in and around the waterway. Themes of water, sedimentation and plant life are prominent throughout, showing the intimate engagement and varied responses artists have had to the Estuary.

The impact of plastic on the Estuary has also been explored.

Wei Lun Ha, a past winner of the Prize, has entered a work painted with pieces of discarded plastic found around the Estuary.

John Johnston’s Enough Rope consists of recycled single-use plastic bags woven into a long rope. This rope will continue to be added to as the exhibition goes on, representing the fast accumulation of everyday items that will outlive us and, innocent as they may seem, are destroying our

After the tour the RNZB will take part in Auckland Live’s Pick N’ Mix Festival and present “Sugar Plum Family Fun” at the ASB Theatre, Aotea Centre on Saturday July 14 and the Bruce Mason Centre on Sunday July15.

Watene headed to Youth Olympics

She says her parents and her brother are her biggest cheerleaders and will join her in Argentina.

“They have always been firm believers in my ability even when I doubted myself,” she says.

The Howick College player says she has always felt at home on the rugby field and started playing sevens when she was in year nine.

“My school sports coordinator said she wanted to enter a sevens team in the Condors tournament, and I had always been interested in rugby so I was all for it. I guess I’ve just never looked back,” says the rising star.

She doesn’t know why, but it’s what her dad always put on to hype her up before she headed out onto the rugby field.

It’s a ritual she will be taking with her to Argentina to play in the New Zealand U18 Sevens team in the Youth Olympic Games in October.

The Howick College student says being selected to represent New Zealand at the Youth Olympics is a dream come true.

The first thing she did when she found out was call her mum.

“At first she didn’t believe me and actually hung up on me. Then she

Even more taxes coming Last week the Ardern-Peters Government confirmed their transport policy with their finalised Government Policy Statement on Land Transport.

This confirmation brings with it some major issues for motorists and commuters in Auckland.

The biggest issues are the two new taxes on fuel. A combination of the new regional fuel tax and new increases to the national fuel excise mean that we will all

This is meant to go towards funding major projects in our region but we know that the funding for state highways has been cut by over $5 billion nationally. So she scribbled her goal down on a piece of paper which she pinned to her notice board.

Every morning she looks at that piece of paper as a reminder to stay focussed and work hard, she says.

“All that hard work has finally paid off.”

Watene says her goal now is to keep working hard so she is fitter, stronger and better than what she is before heading to the Youth Olympics.

McClenaghan back in blue

nternational cricketer Mitchell McClenaghan is back in the Auckland Aces fold for the 201819 season, taking one of the four remaining domestic contracts.

McClenaghan, from the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club joins experienced head Michael Barry, newly contracted Finn Allen and North Shore’s Graeme Beghin in the Auckland squad.

The left-arm quick will be with the Aces for the Burger King Super Smash and part of the Ford Trophy campaign as well as being a valuable resource for the young Auckland bowling unit. “I’m excited to be back around the group. It was good to spend some time leading into the Super Smash last year with a few one-dayers. We have an exciting group of players here in Auckland,”

said McClenaghan. “I’ll be able to help the bowling unit, particularly in the T20’s. There’s a few things I’ve learnt, particularly in the last six months, that will help us be competitive with the ball.”

McClenaghan says his time away at various T20 tournaments has helped him grow; with his exposure to some of the best players in the game assisting in his development.

“I’ve been put under a lot of pressure in different tournaments. This year’s IPL showed me the hard learnings and the stuff I have been working on has paid off.”

With the ICC Cricket World Cup just around the corner in 2019, the left-armer says he still harbours the desire to play for New Zealand.

“Even though I would be a slim chance of making the World Cup

squad, I want to come back to New Zealand and put some pressure on heading into that tournament.”

“I don’t want to die wondering ‘what if’...I feel my bowling is getting back to a speed I’m very happy with and I’m getting that extra kick and bounce again. Part of the thinking is I could still contribute to New Zealand really well in the one-day format.”

Another Ace who has been around the environment for several seasons is Michael Barry, with head coach Mark O’Donnell happy to have him back in the group.

“Baz has been a solid performer for several years now and can do a job with both bat and ball. He’s a very likeable character,” said O’Donnell.

While Barry and McClenaghan

have been here before, newcomers Graeme Beghin and Finn Allen are stoked to have signed their first domestic contracts.

“It’s all pretty exciting so I’m taking a moment to enjoy it,” said Beghin. “It’s something that I’ve been working towards for a long time and it’s great to share the news with friends and family who have always supported me and my cricket.”

New Zealand Under-19 star Allen said it was a “dream come true” when he was told he had made the cut.

Blues inspire OSC rugby team

Members of the Blues visited Ormiston Senior College as part of the Best Foot Forward Programme.

Nine members from the Blues Super Rugby squad recently visited Ormiston Senior College to present the school with rugby boots which were donated from around Auckland.

Gerard Cowley Tuioti, Jerome Kaino, James Parsons, Scott Scrafton, Tamati Tua, Ben Nee-Nee, Glenn Preston, Murphy Taramai and Mike Tamoaieta created quite a stir

at a presentation at the school followed by a Q & A session.

Ormiston Senior College has formed its first rugby team since the school’s formation eight years.

Throughout the set-up of the team, the senior college has received a range of support from Auckland Rugby and New Zealand Rugby.

This support continued with the college part of the Best Foot

Forward Programme, sponsored

by Blues Rugby in partnership with BNZ bank.

The purpose of the programme is to give back to the community and help young people have a go at rugby and to experience the benefits of playing a team sport.

Ormiston Senior College is currently playing in the 2C grade as part of the Auckland Rugby Competition.

A musical performance by the
