atherine Paton is much like any other 24-year-old. She is a sister, a daughter, a qualified vet nurse and a dedicated gymnast who dreams of competing in the Olympics.

And if it weren’t for the dialysis machine in the corner you’d never know she was battling kidney failure.

Katherine has been on daily dialysis for the past three years. Every six hours is spent hooked up to a dialysis machine to keep her alive.

But this isn’t stopping Katherine from chasing her dreams.

Katherine trains four hours a day, six days a week as a member of the New Zealand Seniors Rhythmic Gymnastics group.

And in a little less than a month they will be heading to Europe to take part in two World Cups in Belarus and Russia and a World Championships and training camp in Bulgaria.

The team have their sights set on the 2020 Olympics, for which these competitions will be a stepping stone to getting them there.

Katherine has been in love with gymnastics for as long as she can remember.

She started artistic gymnastics at five-years-old and by 13 she had taken up rhythmic gymnastics.

But in 2008 at 14, gymnastics was put on hold when she was diagnosed with a genetic mutation that was causing her kidney’s to fail.

Katherine was headed towards end-stage renal failure.

Gymnast Katherine Paton, 24, who suffers from kidney failure, is fundraising to get herself and her dialysis boxes to Europe so she can compete in the Rhythmic Gymnastics Worlds this August.

“I suddenly got sick. Flu-like symptoms, with a bit of blurred vision and vomiting, but I was never expecting something like that,” she says.

“They tested my mum immediately and she was a match, so she gave me my first kidney and I will always be grateful to her for that.”

In 2015 after seven years, the kidney that had been donated to Katherine by her mother failed and was removed.

She’s been back on dialysis ever since.

“I have to be careful with everything. I can only eat certain foods, and I’m probably only having about

300-500ml of liquids a day, which includes anything considered a liquid – sauces, yoghurt.”

Since her diagnosis Katherine has had to give up her job as a vet nurse and also say goodbye to her father who passed away after a brave battle with cancer.

“I’ve always come back fighting because if you want something really bad, you do anything to achieve it,” she says.

She doesn’t know how long dialysis will work for her.

“I’ve been told that the life expectancy [for someone on dialysis] is five years, but then I was talking to someone on Facebook who had been on [dialysis] for 18 years so I really don’t know that the future holds,” she says.

But for now she is focussed on keeping herself healthy by maintaining her dialysis, eating the correct food and controlling her fluid intake.

She is also training for her European trip and trying to raise enough money to get her dialysis equipment overseas.

With the trip less than a month away, she has raised only 10 per cent of the $20,000 needed to cover the cost of the journey, including getting her dialysis boxes delivered to the countries she will be visiting.

Katherine leaves for Europe on August 12.

Two students make team The World Sport Stacking Association NZ (WSSA NZ) has named its 2019 NZ Black Stacks team which includes two local students.

Sarina Wang from Saint Kentigern College amkes the team again and Curtis Chiang from Somerville Intermediate School makes it into the side.

The team is the WSSA NZ’s named stackers, and is subject to stackers’ availability.

“It is a huge commitment for stackers and their families and

Uxbridge is launching a 60+ yoga class, with a free introductory class on July 25.

A new yoga programme at Uxbridge is dedicated to help those over 60-years-old keep fit and healthy.

The new yoga programme starts on Wednesday mornings from July 25, 9.30am-10.30am.

The first introductory class will be free to give seniors a chance to try it out.

The programme is suitable for all levels.

Class instructor Juliet Slogrove who has been practicing yoga for 40 years says the pace of the class is slower than mainstream yoga to suit older students.

The 61-year-old says she is familiar with the challenges people face as they age and uses this knowledge in leading her class.

“Postures that place strain on the lower back and joints are avoided. The emphasis is on how it

feels, not how it looks, honouring the inner teacher in terms of what is right for each individual,” she says.

“The gentle nature of yoga makes it the ideal exercise as we age. Chair options will be provided for those who are not comfortable getting up and down on to the floor. Safe transition from lying to standing will be covered in the first class.”

Six step up for council seat

In May the community suffered a tragic loss with the passing of beloved Howick Ward Councillor Dick Quax. His passing left a vacancy on the Auckland Council, prompting a by-election. Nominations closed at noon yesterday. Three candidates came forward to tell the Times that they are standing. Three further names were announced on deadline - student Olivia Montgomery, 20, who stood in 2016; Jessica Collings, 21, daughter of Howick Local Board chair David Collings and event promoter Paul Young who also stood for council in 2016.

Voting documents will be posted to eligible voters from Wednesday, August 22, with voting closing at 12 noon on Thursday, September 13.

(Leader of United Future for a month) “Earlier this year our community was saddened by the passing of Councillor Dick Quax. He was a champion for east Auckland for many years who will be remembered for his vocal support for his area.

I am standing for Auckland Council to make sure that the people of East Auckland are heard.

“I stand for Howick getting a better deal at Auckland Council. I have lived in and worked in the Howick ward for more than 14 years as a journalist/editor of three community newspapers.

My local voluntary roles include serving on the board of Uxbridge Arts and Culture, MC-ing large community events such as Lions in the Park, the Brit and Euro Classic Car Show, Howick Santa Parade, and being a member of the team of not-for-profit community radio East FM. Through these I have developed a deep connection and understanding of our community.

Auckland is rapidly-expanding, an expensive city in need of costly changes and improved infrastructure, and I am concerned about the impact of rising costs on Howick households and businesses.

For too long, Howick rates money has left the area to pay for grand, expensive projects in other parts of the city that have little or no benefit for the local community.

Wise, fair, well-considered and cost-effective decisions are crucial.

All urban development should be considered, consulted and notified.

When high-rise in residential areas and in-fill housing are strongly

opposed, such as in and around Stockade Hill and in residential streets, they should be stopped.

It is my belief that as the city’s biggest ward, Howick deserves greater recognition with increased and appropriate investment.

Transport is a very important issue for Howick and I’m determined to keep driving progress on the quality movement of vehicles and public transport in the Howick ward.

The maintenance of our parks and public green spaces should be of high standard and the issue of safe and clean environment for all is a minimum requirement.

I have and wish to continue to care for all, young and not-so-young who need support from council and not just a lip service.

What I offer is my full and dedicated commitment.

Extensive local and business knowledge to understand the issues, a willingness to listen and “make it happen” attitude. I do so because I care for the Howick Community, and its future. I will be the only candidate who has resigned from my job to show my commitment to you.

Howick Local Board member Jim Donald is standing for Auckland Council in the by-election.

He has valuable experience working in the community having been in the New Zealand Police for 21 years and a Manukau City Councillor for six years before joining the Local Board.

Over the years he has become concerned about Howick community assets not being utilised and community projects not being finished on time, leaving residents unable to utilise key community facilities.

Moon Bay pontoon replacements and the HMB bus turnaround are just a few of many issues which have frustrated locals.

He says the people of the Howick ward are passionate about their community and are willing to pay to use community facilities, and they deserve to have beautiful neighbourhoods to enjoy.

Donald says Local Government should be capitalising on the ‘passion and enthusiasm’ people have for their community by prioritising improvements that are important to residents, but says instead, Auckland Council administration has become too big and is not connecting with its people.

If he were to be elected a Howick Ward Councillor, he plans to nurture a greater connection between Auckland Council’s Governing Body and the people of the Howick Ward. Recently he has been focussing on cleaning up the culverts at Macleans Park with the help of residents and says this project has encouraged council to co-operate with the passion and enthusiasm people have for their community.

He says he is also focussed on promoting public transport, particularly ferry services.

Ably organised by Shona Rakete for the 10th successive year, Peer into the Past History Fair was again highly successful with a display of fantastic entries by five different age groups of home-schooled children.

Of special note were two contestants, Jasmine Fuemana and Abigail Rakete, who have completed 10 projects over 10 consecutive years since Peer into the Past was first conceived - a fantastic achievement.

Shona Rakete was also acknowledged for her work to establish the Fair in 2008 and her ongoing commitment each consecutive year to organise a complex event with great success.

A group of willing volunteers assisted Shona on the day to make this a most memorable event.

Held at the Baptist Church Hall, Manukau, on Friday July 6, the entries were displayed and judged and were once again of a high standard.

This was followed by a history presentation and prize-giving.

Well-known Howickian in the form of ‘Private’ Walter Rice of the Royal New Zealand Fencible Corp gave a presentation on the settlement of Howick and surrounds by the Fencible soldier/ settlers in the 1800s. This was supported by a role play of Lady Marilyn and her hand servant Mary O’Brien, highlighting the comparison of life in the settlement.

As a special acknowledgement of the 10th anniversary, an exciting announcement was made that all Peer into the Past contestants were to receive free entry into the Howick Historical Village in September, sponsored by the Home School Group Committee.

Rushton fixing female fears A

local lad has developed an app-based taxi service, giving females the safety and security of only female drivers.

DriveHer is simply women driving women.

Joel Rushton, a 23-year-old Howick College graduate, developed the new service.

“It worried me that my family and friends felt unsafe and were at times forced to choose transport options that left them vulnerable,” he said.

“While living in Australia I came across a service offering female drivers through a mobile app and knew we should have it here too.”

A law student at the University of Auckland, Rushton has spent the last nine months developing the app.

‘It is also about empowering women too,’ he says. “This business

structure allows women to be in charge of their own income in a safe environment.

We all know about the gender gap and this means they can work their own hours around family, study or semi-retirement.”

He also says DriveHer is about lowering the barriers women might face when wanting to become a taxi driver.

His company’s supported joining process helps drivers to get started, meaning you only need a decent car and be a confident driver to sign up. So men can’t ride?

Rushton explains they still can.

“Users can request a ‘mixed’ ride that gives drivers the choice around which groups they feel safe taking.

The male then just needs to sit in the back seat.”

“I signed up thinking that I wouldn’t get a call back, but within two days I had Nigel Godfrey, CEO of Miss Universe New Zealand, call me. I didn’t expect it at all since I have no modelling experience,” says 21-year-old Neera.

At the Stiletto Camp, 35 girls went through a series of workshops on the art of cat-walk,

dance, makeup, hair, nutrition, and skin care as well as a photo shoot and a video profile shoot.

The former Botany Downs Secondary College student says that the most daunting part of the camp was the nail-biting wait for the organisers to announce the names of the top 20 finalists.

“It took me few minutes to believe that my name was actually called out as a finalist in the Miss Universe NZ Facebook video release.

riders in an endeavour to further enhance confidence of safety, the biggest issue women worry about

But why is a man running a business for women?

The following day we headed out to Bangkok, Thailand and were surprised to be greeted by huge crowds wanting to be photographed with us.

“Wearing those sashes we felt like princesses. We spent five days in Bangkok and five days in Pattaya with plenty of sponsor activities such as the spectacular Kaan Circus show and the Pattaya Yacht Club Cruise to an island.

More importantly, we had an official bikini shoot which will count towards our overall score,” she says.

Once back home, it was back to business as they took on the entrepreneurial challenge.

“We are required to raise funds for disadvantaged kids being supported by Variety, and I have chosen to host an entertainment night with traditional Sri Lankan dancers and singers on July 28.”

Half the funds from the fundraiser will go towards the children’s charity and the other half will go towards Neera’s Miss Universe New Zealand journey.

The grand final is on August 4 at Sky City Theatre as contestants walk the runway and answer questions to win the crown of Miss Universe New Zealand.

“Unfortunately, I have many women in my life with personal insight into the dangers of just living as a female,” Mr Rushton says.

“I’ve included the input of the women in my life and in the community at all stages.”

This includes his mother and sister, who, he says, are very excited about DriveHer. “We need to tackle this inequality by empowering women where ever we can,” he says.

“This is just one way.”

DriveHer is starting in Auckland and is currently hiring drivers.

Mr Rushton is aiming to launch the service for riders in a few months.

ampaigners made sure their feelings came through loud and clear at Monday morning’s final Commission Hearing regarding Stockade Hill.

With dozens of placard-toting Howickians lining the entrance to the Fencible Room, clearly the call to show the commission the level of local support, and the depth of feeling, had worked.

These numbers were no-doubt boosted by the high level of activity by the Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association and the Stockade Hill Defencibles team. The group has been drumming up support on Picton Street over the last three weekends and via their Facebook page to keep the landmark’s 360-degree views.

The 200-plus crowd was so large that staff had to open up an adjoining room to accommodate everyone – but still only half managed to get a seat. The hearing suffered continual problems with an ineffective sound system which was either inaudible, giving off booming feedback or just not working. Much to the exasperation of all concerned.

These delays made an already agitated crowd impatient to get going. “If you’re waiting to start the meeting we’re all here” – commented one man, eliciting a round of applause that clearly irritated the chairman of the Hearing Commission who was attempting to get his microphone to operate. Shortly afterwards, with the goodwill in the room being tested by inaudible questions and responses, a five-

minute adjournment was called.

When order – and batteries were restored, the real business of the hearing began. The Commissioners (Heike Lutz, Angela Dalton and chair Robert Scott) commenced questioning the three Auckland Council representatives. Scott, in particular, probed Heritage Team Leader Tania Sorrell and landscape architect Melean Absolum about the significance of the 360-degree views, both from a heritage point of view and in relation to other council legislation, including blanket protection for limiting building height to 9 metres currently in place for volcanic cones.

When asked about the historic status of Stockade Hill, the panel responded that whilst the hill itself was protected, the views from and to the hill were not.

There then followed a meandering discussion regarding what direction those inside the Stockade may have been looking to detect invaders – the answer

was that no one really knew.

The biggest reaction from the crowd came when Ms Absolum suggested that should building heights increase, the view would not be wholly lost as it could still be viewed through the gaps between the houses.

Clearly, there was a push from the Commissioners to seek clarification and interrogate what the interpretation of council legislation currently is, and how this may affect public views from Stockade Hill.

The hearing concluded, with the chairman thanking all attendees, remarking that this was an impressive turn out ‘double the size’ of the previous hearing and larger than any he has attended. Later that day, the council emailed all submitters that the “chairperson confirmed that the panel is in a position to make a decision and had formerly closed the hearing”.

Now we have to wait for the outcome – hopefully not too long.

The star of all op shops The Cancer Society Pre-Loved Boutique in Howick’s Rice’s Mall is the crème-de-la-crème of op shops.

And as its relatively new shop manager Gabrielle Brcic will tell you, it is a great little shop with superior bargains. Really.

Where the larger charity shops might not be so discerning and throw sometimes-random prices on their goods, the Pre-Loved Boutique has an eye for the better quality products at very decent prices.

Many are still discovering the little store and finding fantastic treasures there too.

Gabrielle has re-designed parts of the store to provide more logical and accessible displays and she’s chosen to be select with the boutique’s offerings so won’t generally stock electrical

goods (the cost of running checks negates any chance of a bargain), records or CDS. DVDs however are popular and easy enough to display.

Two volunteers on each day ensures there’s cover for everyone, particularly when they’re overwhelmed by shoppers.

Gabrielle’s background in both jewellery and charity shops has given her a good eye for valuable items and an understanding of the mix people want to see when they’re on the lookout for a good buy.

Small things like using better shelving and cabinets to show off the shop’s wares has worked a treat, as evidenced by a noticeable increase in goods sold each week and dollars coming in – all crucial for the Cancer

Society and its work.

Another example is the halfprice rack that used to take up room in the shop. “When I started I watched it for a while and decided to do away with that and went for a $5 rack outside the door,” Gabrielle said.

It did the trick. Last week she held a week-long book sale.

Another success. The week before that was a half-price sale.

“I don’t do sales all the time but if we want to raise the profile of the store, there’s a few things we can do.”

Another significant change was moving away from a predilection for women’s gear like shoes, handbags and the like and going for a bit more variety. Again, a winning formula. But she’s kept hold of the high-end quality women’s products – they are

still the biggest seller in-store.

The fact it is a boutique charity shop makes all the difference – it stocks much better quality goods than those found in bigger stores.

Most of the goods are dropped into the shop directly whilst the balance comes from Domain Lodge, the Cancer Society’s headquarters in Grafton.

And there are some memorable pieces. One eagle-eyed customer immediately spotted Waterford crystal dessert dishes and paid $250 without hesitation.

And soon they’ll be housing the better-quality jewellery in a cabinet.

Buying is easier too – the shop

takes credit cards. They also run a very simple loyalty scheme.

“It’s just a great little shop,” says Gabrielle.

“I love it – you never know from one day until the next what you’re going to sell. Every day is like Christmas. You don’t know what you’re going to get.”

t was more than a table-tennis match. It was a way of connecting with migrants who may not speak the same language.

A turnout of more than 300 people from the Chinese community greeted leader of opposition Simon Bridges at the Te Tuhi Art Centre on Thursday afternoon.

There were lots of questions asked from prisons to pensioners, health system to housing, immigration laws and trade relationship with China that the 41-year old politician who is not wasting a single moment in the countdown to the next election, answered with equanimity.

The Q&A session was followed by table-tennis matches which featured a line-up of National MPs including Simeon Brown, Dr Jian Yang, Andrew Bayly, Paul Goldsmith, Alfred Ngaro, Mark Mitchell, Chris Penk, Denise Lee, Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi and Melissa Lee – play the popular game amongst the Asian community.

But the Government inherited a strong economy.

The Government has had no issue finding the money to pay for $1b for more diplomats, $3b free fees for tertiary students and a $3b slush fund for Shane Jones.

The Government chose to fund these policies over funding for healthcare. What’s worse, they’re putting even less into the health budget than what National was. In their last Budget, Labour added $731 million. In National’s last budget we added $924b.

We can also see that over the next four years, Labour is planning on adding $1b less into health than what National had committed to.

National’s record on health was not perfect, but health spending was at record levels.

Beloved antique store calls time P

icton Street’s beloved antique shop is closing its doors for the final time at the end of this month.

The Antique Shop at 31 Picton Street has been selling vintage and antique pieces to the people of Howick for more than 22 years.

Owner Ted Waters says the family-owned business has been a valued part of the community for many years but it’s finally time to call it a day.

He and many of his family members have worked in the business over the years, and he is sad to say goodbye. “Howick is very unique for a lot of good reasons and is the reason the business have lasted as long as it has.”

Botany centre’s works going well A

MP Capital has confirmed the $78 million expansion of Botany Town Centre is progressing well and has entered the third stage of its extensive refurbishment with the closure of Garden Lane.

This marks a significant milestone of the large-scale development which is on track to complete in mid-2019. The development to date has seen the extension of the main entrance (Conservatory) well under way with the roof due to be added in the next six weeks.

The refurbishment of Market Square (near New World) is also well advanced.

AMP Capital Shopping Centres development manager Paul Hudson says retailers have been supportive of the closure of Garden Lane, and sales have been positive throughout the development. “When the newlydeveloped precincts re-open next year, we anticipate five new tenants will come into Garden Lane along with existing retailers, most of whom have been temporarily relocated during the redevelopment.” The community garden currently located in Garden Lane will be recycled and the plants will be re-located throughout the centre, while the play area will reopen in the form of three smaller play areas around the centre once the development is complete.

Lane’s ambience and open space are being designed with the comfort and enjoyment of shoppers in mind, Mr Hudson says.

“We are pleased with how the development is progressing and with the level of interest in the project from the community and many highly soughtafter domestic and international retailers.

Forty per cent of the new Garden Lane is already leased, which is a sign that the centre is viewed as a premium site for retail,” he says.

The expansion follows the Auckland Council Unitary Plan’s designation of Botany Town Centre as a metropolitan zoned hub.

Several Special Housing Areas and future residential growth areas have been identified surrounding the centre and have been fast-tracked for development.

The redevelopment will enable the centre to cater to the needs of

the growing population within the community, by bringing Botany Town Centre’s gross lettable area to more than 62,700 square metres occupied by more than 200 tenants, while preserving its qualities as an open-air shopping centre that customers enjoy.

Botany plans to embrace its environment even further, delivering a seamless movement between open air and enclosed spaces. Botany Town Centre opened in 2001 and is currently Auckland’s second-largest shopping centre by lettable area.

owick Little Theatre’s latest production Good People by the prolific and popular American playwright David Lindsay-Abaire is the New Zealand premiere of this ‘comedy of manners’.

It offers a cocktail of secrets, lies, class and race and asks the question “what makes us good people?”

A struggling single mum loses her job and runs into an old flame from her childhood neighbourhood. He is now a successful doctor with a ‘perfect’ life but she decides to risk all trying to find a new start.

An insightful comedy of class and culture, it’s darkly funny and surprisingly touching.

Director Vic Leilua has assembled a stellar cast of highly competent, experienced actors who bring this play to the stage with panache, great timing and very secure individual characterisations. The gentle accents are well executed and help to create the atmosphere of ‘South Boston Lower End’ Massachusetts, USA. Carleena Walsh, as the hapless

Margaret, has superb timing and holds this play together throughout – whether bantering with her friends Dottie (Judy Rankin) and Jean (Ngaire-AnnHobson) in their wonderfully funny scenes at the kitchen table and in the bingo hall – or in the ‘posh’ living room of Mike and Kate’s house in Act II when the lies and secrets are revealed.

All their characters are delightful and these fine actresses have the audience in their hands.

Matthew van den Berg is totally believable in the challenging role of Mike, the at-first self-assured handsome, rich doctor, and then in his confusion and anger coping with Maggie’s determination to reveal his past

in his own home.

And perhaps there’s a new star rising in Estelle Chout’s debut at HLT as Mike’s wife Kate; she is assured, articulate and poised and brings some reality to the story.

The short last scene in the bingo hall is very clever, with an unexpected twist in the tale at the end.

David Inglis’s set design is highly successful, with the four scene locations indicated by subtle lighting from David Guthrie and entirely adequate minimal scenery and props.

This is a very watchable entertainment and completely typical of the standard expected from Howick Little Theatre.

Pakuranga’s Carol Farnell was recently awarded Life Membership of Communicare.

Carol has been a volunteer with the Auckland not-forprofit at their Pakuranga Friendship Centre for 28 years and has now transitioned from serving tea and coffee to seniors at the centre to participating in games and activities as a member herself.

What are they thinking?

I have read both your articles in relation to the development in Straun Place (Highland Park) and Richard Ave (Bucklands Beach) and I can absolutely see why the residents are extremely upset.

In Hattaway Avenue, a development is being carried out that will have a similar impact. Once where there were two single houses, the developer has combined the two sections and is building 15 two and three-bedroom apartments and houses with only one car park each!

On contacting Town Planning I was advised that this has been allowed on the basis that the council want to encourage people to use public transport - what a joke!

When the development became public knowledge, several residents got together and approached the council to ask, among many other things, why notified consent was not required.

The council’s response was that under the new Unitary Plan, it is not a requirement.

There are around eight properties on the boundary of this development, so surely adjoining and, neighbouring residents should have some rights - apparently not.

After being away for three years, we moved back into the area and, along with several other neighbours, had a meeting with (Councillors) Dick Quax and Sharon Stewart towards the end of last year.

We were told that nothing could be done and that we should

have objected to the Unitary Plan when objections were called for (I am totally fed up with being told that).

As we all know, town planners spend several years at university to gain their qualifications and some of the information I have received from the council in respect of this development is like a foreign language to the average person.

The development raises several major issues for residents: a) With 15 houses and apartments, with say three or four (or more) residents each, where are all the extra cars going to park?

Out on the street of course. During summer, Hattaway Ave is full of cars and boat trailers due to the launch ramp opposite the end of Devon Road. As for the council’s desire to “encourage” people to use public transport (that, is sadly lacking), is pure fantasy and not a realistic basis upon which to allow a development to go ahead with a total lack of off-road parking for residents. b) Severe beach erosion and flooding that will be further

exacerbated by the amount of stormwater from these 15 extra properties. As locals are well aware, there is often flooding at Big Bucks and, where it already occurs, is pretty much in line with the back of the development. I attend Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Residents and Ratepayers meetings and twice last year we were promised a report from the council in respect of the erosion and flooding issues in both Little and Big Bucks - this has not come to light as yet. c) The robbing of neighbours’ privacy and sunlight by the height and proximity of this development to the boundary. d) Apparently, there is no requirement for a body corporate so one can only wonder what these properties will look like in 10 years.

Lastly, I have word from within council that “Council have a close relationship with developers and Central Government at the expense of the ratepayer” which I find rather disturbing.

Hornets are outstanding My name is Jeff Matai and I am a Youth Support Co-ordinator for the charity Canteen NZ in Auckland.

Our organisation supports young people living with cancer from the ages 13-24yrs.

Recently Howick Hornets Rugby League celebrated the HeadShave Challenge and fundraising nearly $6k for Canteen as the challenge I presented to them was only raising $2k.

There were five nominated gentlemen both at senior players level and the club committee level committed to shaving their heads if they could fundraise $2k.

Allen and the fabulous committee, they tapped into every network stream they knew of from club sponsors, local sports club, engaging their junior teams, and also engaging Auckland Rugby League and SAS sports apparel challenging them in support of their fundraiser.

I sincerely want to honour and recognise the outstanding effort Howick Hornets Rugby League Club, the committee, players, family and friends, club sponsors and everyone who got behind the club helped raise the money and special spread awareness of Canteen.

I wonder who the mastermind was in making the bus stop at the present place on the side of Stockade Hill entering Picton Street.

It is truly a dangerous one as one who alights from a bus has to be wary of traffic coming both ways. from Piston Street going onwards to Ridge Road and beyond and traffic coming from Ridge Road to Picton Street and beyond.

Why did not the bright planners of council and Auckland Transport consider making the Stockade Hill one way on either side?

Also the mound near the junction of Cook Street and Minerva should be made one way to facilitate smooth movement of the ever increasing traffic.

Another thing is why the sheltered bus stop on Picton Street knocked down by the bus has not been replaced?

Will someone please wake up and make improvements to enhance the traffic movement efficiently?

Go Bus must sort this

Today (July 16) I travelled by ferry bus from the downtown ferry terminal because low tide at Half Moon Bay precluded the use of a ferry.

We arrived at HMB terminal at approximately 16.08hrs, passing the waiting passenger buses as we did so. They were not parked at the proper bus stop but were about 50m further away from the ferry terminal.

All the passengers from the ferry bus had to thread their way through cars in the carpark to reach the buses and only one person was ahead of me as we rushed to the buses.

She boarded the bus at the back of the queue of three buses. Just as I reached Go Bus 735 it began to pull away and I knocked on the door so was let on. The driver did not wait for any other people.

When I remonstrated with him

he said he had to go according to the timetable. It is not good enough that he should see the ferry bus arrive and not wait for the people to board the bus.

Earlier this year I was on a ferry which arrived about 5 minutes late to find no buses had waited for it to arrive and I had a long walk home.

I have seen others complain about this and it is time Go Bus got this sorted because their service isn’t a service if the people are left behind and I would encourage Auckland Transport not to renew their tender when it comes up for review.

If Howick Village wants to secure Stockade Hill’s views for future generations, they need to have their say now through “Save Stockade Hill Views”.

Everyone needs a safe, comfortable, affordable home. No-one needs an extravagant home that destroys the natural beauty of Howick and prohibits those with less money from enjoying what has, and always should be, their right to freely enjoy.

If more homes need to be built, there are more appropriate places to build. Stockade Hill is a monument to selfless souls and it should never be overshadowed by a monument to selfish egos.

We should be thankful for what we have and not let it be stolen by greed masquerading as “progress”.

hey are master chefs in the making. Natasha Pheng and Farzana Rahimi of Botany Downs Secondary College (BDSC) were thrilled to win a cheque of $1000 at the Eye on Nature Cooking Competition, hosted by the Manukau Beautification Trust at the foyer of the Botanical Garden Visitor Centre, recently.

The five high schools competing for the prize money were Botany Downs Secondary College. Saint Kentigern College, Pakuranga Col-

lege, Alfriston and Aorere colleges.

The dish that won the judges’ approval and top marks was seared venison and tartare with potato and mushroom croquettes, butternut puree, mushroom soil and kale.

Head of food technology at BDSC, Angie Thomson says that the brief was to prepare a dish that relates to the New Zealand restaurant industry.

“It is a dish that is inspired by recipes seen on/in some of New

Zealand’s most famous restaurants menus and cook books (Cluprit, Cibo and French café to name a few).

“The dish is also made up of locally sourced ingredients which we felt represents many of the classic Kiwi staples,” she says.

Year 12 students Natasha and Farzana say that the dish is a fine example of modern New Zealand cuisine that celebrates the beautiful ingredients New Zealand has to offer.

“We used the mandatory components of the competition (venison, potatoes and mushroom) as a starting point and looked for other ingredients and cookery techniques that we thought would complement these.

“With the help of our teacher – who is extremely passionate about fine food, we trawled through websites and cook books to be inspired by what New Zealand chefs are serving in their restaurants,” they say.

Looking back at WWI Pakuranga Choral Society commemorates the end of World War I in a concert on August 26 devoted to music of the period, and some recent New Zealand compositions.

In tandem with guests Howick Brass, the concert will feature music by Anthony Young and David Hamilton, alongside music

yan Fox has propelled himself into the top 10 of the European Tour money list following his last two weekends of work at the Irish and Scottish open championships.

The Beachlands pro golfer came from a long way back to end sixthequal at the Scottish Open which wrapped up at the weekend.

Fox carded a two under par 68 in the final round of the European Tour event at the Gullane Golf Club in East Lothian on Sunday local time.

Meanwhile Fox is looking forward to the Open Championship teeing off today at the legendary Carnoustie Championship Course. Often referred to as The Open or the British Open, Fox, 31, earned a start after his Irish Open result.

“I’m looking forward to Carnoustie.

This weekend the Year 13 Botany Downs Secondary College student is excited to be invited by Women in Motorsport to be part of the CRC Speedshow at the ASB Showgrounds.

Amy’s goal in the racing season from October 2018 to March 2019 is to be the first ever female to win a Motorsport NZ Championship.

The young trail blazer currently competes with males of all ages (some older ex-champions still race) in the NZ Formula First Championship - an open wheel racing class designed for close and competitive racing with speed up to 185km/h.

Fundraising last week at Botany Town Centre for the ASR500 Club (to provide a helping hand with the career development of her racing career) attracted a lot of attention as hundreds of shoppers wanted to be photographed in the car or with the young winner of the NZ Formula First Grand Prix One Hour race at Manfield.

“When I started racing karts at six, I never thought it made a difference that I was a girl, I was just doing the same as the others on the track,” says Amy who has competed in more than 1000 races before she turned 13 and moved to circuit racing.

Championship for four seasons and recently finished sixth in the 2017/18 NZ Formula First Championship posting the fastest lap at both the NZ Grand Prix meet and the Speedworks series final at Pukekohe Raceway.

This racing class has been responsible for starting the careers of some of New Zealand’s very best young drivers and Amy hopes it will do the same for her.

Average rents across South Auckland remain below the average for the greater Auckland region (Pukekohe to Rodney). Over the past 12 months, South Auckland 3-bedroom rentals had an average weekly rental price of $517. This was 21 per cent lower than the average for greater Auckland 3-bedroom rentals ($624). 2-bedroom rentals in South Auckland were $428, compared to $488 for greater Auckland.

Looking at the individual South Auckland suburbs, rental prices for 2-bed and 3-bed properties grew between 3 per cent and 6 per cent over the past year. In the past year there has been a notable plateau in median sales prices across the South Auckland region. Manurewa (-4 per cent), Eastern Beaches (-2 per cent), Papatoetoe (-1 per cent) have all suffered decreases in the average sales price in the past 12 months, which suggests that Auckland’s house prices are perhaps starting to stabilise. Eastern Beaches properties still remain well above other suburbs with an average sales price of 1055k.

Sales volumes have decreased across most South Auckland suburbs – except for Papakura, where the average number of monthly sales increased from 92 in May 2017 to 97 in May 2018. Manurewa has recorded the largest decrease in sales volume, dropping by 23 per cent in the past 12 months.

Residential property management move a ‘game changer’ Property Institute of New Zealand chief executive Ashley Church has announced plans to transform the residential property management sector in New Zealand by bringing the Independent Property Managers Association under the umbrella of the Institute – a move that he says will be a ‘gamechanger’ for the sector.

“This has the potential to dramatically lift expected standards and bring residential property management into line with other property professions in New Zealand”.

The move was recently formalised in a memorandum of understanding signed between the Property Institute of New Zealand (PINZ) and the Independent Property Managers Association (IPMA) and means that IPMA members will become affiliate members of the Institute in a transition that will eventually

see them becoming full members of the Institute, with their own professional standing under the PINZ umbrella.

Mr Church says it’s hoped that the move will significantly improve standards in the residential property management industry and will ultimately benefit tenants. He says the IPMA was chosen because their members already adhere to higher standards than other industry operators but that the agreement with PINZ will enable them to further improve their skills through the introduction of formal standards and continuing professional education and the strengthening of their existing ethics and formal complaints processes.“Residential property management, in New Zealand, is not a heavily regulated industry, and we’ve all heard the stories about renegade property managers who’ve treated tenants and owners

Insulation programme launched

he country has been hit with a series of cold snaps this winter but low-income homeowners can now warm up with grants covering two thirds of the cost of ceiling and under-floor insulation, Energy and Resources Minister Megan Woods says.

Woods launched the Warmer Kiwi Homes insulation programme last week, following an announcement in the May Budget of a $142 million investment to make Kiwi homes warmer and drier. The grants are targeted towards those who need them most. People and families who live in low decile areas or with a health condition or a community services card are eligible under the new scheme.

The first year of the programme will focus on insulation grants, with grants for heating available from July 2019, Woods says.

“The Government has invested in this programme because too many homes are cold and damp, leading to preventable diseases such as rheumatic fever and asthma. Low-income families, young children and older Kiwis are especially vulnerable to the impacts of living in cold, damp

homes.

“That’s a huge personal cost to families but it also adds cost and pressure to the health system. That’s why the government has lifted the level of funding per grant from 25 per cent per fit out to two thirds of the cost.

This will make getting your home insulated more accessible to those who need it most.”

Woods also acknowledged the community organisations which invest additional funding in insulation programmes, lifting the level of funding available in grants and making a significant difference to the wellbeing of their communities.

“The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA), which runs Warmer Kiwi Homes, is encouraging community organisations to contribute funding to make the cost to homeowners as low-cost as possible,” says Megan Woods.

Dr Jekyll inspires the Warriors

aving played Mister Hyde in being thrashed by the Penrith Panthers in the NRL the previous week, the Warriors took on the mantle of Doctor Jekyll in restoring their fans’ faith with an impressive 26-6 win against the Brisbane Broncos at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday.

Issac Luke, Simon Mannering, Sean Johnson, Blake Green, Solomone Kata and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck were all in top form and Gerald Beale slotted into right centre nicely to complete a cohesive attacking performance backed by strong defence.

With Luke and Green the team’s best playmakers and Johnson more assertive in his attack, the sixth placed-Warriors were much sharper than in their dismal showing against the Panthers.

However it’s a pity that there are so few moves executed to put classy fullback and skipper Tuivasa-Sheck through gaps rather than force him to play a Lone Ranger role. Give him space out wide and more tries will come.

Meanwhile having lost 28-24 to a Chiefs team bereft of several of their stars in Hamilton, the Hurricanes will be hoping home ground advantage in Wellington will allow them to return to their best in Friday night’s Super Rugby playoff.

With Beauden Barrett and Ngani Laumape barely firing despite the absence of Damian McKenzie and Charlie Ngatai, the Hurricanes have now lost four of their last five matches.

One giant step for local squash club The future of squash has arrived in Howick. Launched last week at the Howick Squash Club, ISquash brings digital technology in to the court.

The system was created in Germany and is the first to be installed in the Southern Hemisphere. The club invited the New Zealand Junior Squash team to try it out before the squad headed off to compete in the Junior World Champs in India.
