Stockade Hill view slashed

owick Ratepayers and Residents Association’s (HRRA) call for 360 degree views from Stockade Hill has been rejected.

Last week the long-awaited decision on Plan Change 3 (PC3) Protection of the views from Stockade Hill was released on behalf of the Auckland Council

by Independent Hearing Commissioners Robert Scott (chair), Heike Lutz and Angela Dalton.

Gayleen Mackereth, chair of the HRRA, said they were “extremely disappointed with the outcome, which did not go far enough, we believe”.

However there were compromises including a limited viewshaft and some restrictions as to property height restrictions.

According to the Commissoner’s statement: “The purpose of PC3 was to limit the height of development within identified properties in the Mixed Housing Urban zone immediately north of Stockade Hill to no more than 8 metres to ensure that views to the Hauraki Gulf (within the viewshaft arc identified) are maintained.”

“The Commissioners made a decision to ignore all HRRA’s evidence asking for, at minimum, a much wider viewshaft,” Mrs Mackereth said.

Instead the Commissioners chose to maintain this narrow viewshaft proposed by Council from Flat Island to the middle of Rangitoto.

“The Council’s landscape archi-

tect had identified the current limited viewshaft, as a narrow one from the Toposcope only, which does not encompass the wider views from the top of the hill, nor the views approaching Howick by road along Ridge Road.”

The HRRA did succeed in getting the viewing height from the Toposcope reduced to 1.5 metres (a woman’s height instead of the 1.7m man’s height proposed) but failed to get consideration of the view from a sitting position .

This viewshaft replaces the current Crawford Reserve viewshaft from the base of the hill.

“The proposed viewshaft only partially limits a selected number of buildings to a frontage height of 8m, (see map with dotted marking and line indicating the limited viewshaft) in keeping with the rest of the Cockle Bay zone,” Mrs Mackereth said.

“However we feel that the number of properties covered by this rule is minimal and buildings behind the front ones on the same section will still be able to go to three storeys.

“We have no protection for the views to the other volcanic cones such as Mt Eden and One Tree Hill, Mangere Mountain etc and we have no protection for the views south towards Point View Drive as Ridge Rd is zoned for 12 metre buildings though the slope of the land will provide limited protection as the land falls away.” ➤ Turn to Page 5

allabies legend Tim Horan was the special guest at Pakuranga United Rugby Club’s 13th annual luncheon and academy auction on Friday.

Horan’s humour and tales of great rugby exploits – he was in two Australian World Cup winning sides and also was in the winning Aussie side to snatch the Bledisloe Cup in the early 90s – went down a treat with the crowd of around 220.

The Steinglager-sponsored lunch raises funds for the PURC acadamies and has amassed around $250,000 over the years.

Nothing is quite as it seems

Four candidates vying for the vacant Howick Ward seat on Auckland Council’s governing body were front and centre on Tuesday at East City Wesleyan Church and faced a barrage of questions and a not insignificant amount of pressure from the switched-on audience

W

hen I was younger and watching the All Blacks standing for the national anthem, I used to focus right in on who was singing and, more importantly, who knew the words.

I had a flashback to those days on Tuesday night when the candidates fighting for Auckland Council’s single vacant seat representing the Howick Ward were called to their feet with the rest of us for the anthem.

Crikey they were all so good.

They knew the words. They sang with gusto. I noticed, with some pride, they were all looking ever-soslightly upwards. Did they rehearse this? Then I turned. An overhead projector threw the lyrics up on the wall behind me. What a fool I felt. It was no trickery. I had expected the worst and learned a little lesson.

Nothing is as it seems.

There are supposed to be six candidates and yet two haven’t even bothered turning up to either of the last two public forums. The absentees – Jessica Collings (yes, daughter of the Howick Local Board chair David) and Paul Young didn’t show.

I didn’t understand their messages, but didn’t care really. Lloyd Wong, this week’s forum facilitator, the referee if you will, went further and suggested candidates in future should be obligated to come and face the masses. I tend to agree. He also refused to play a video from Young. Good move.

The crowd – and the referee – were tough. They were relentless.

The four who took to the stage at East City Wesleyan Church (the

host of many political forums over the years) were given no quarter really. It was full-on from the kickoff. Around two-and-a-quarter hours of bombardment. Little wonder one or two looked absolutely shell-shocked at the end (the four are Olivia Montgomery, Phil Taylor, Jim Donald and Damian Light).

There were around 100-110 in attendance so there was no shortage of questions, sent to Wong in an orderly fashion for feeding out to the candidates. Perhaps they should have been miked up. Each one must have risen to walk to the lectern and back at least 20 times.

And the questions were all to do with your usual chestnuts – bugbears really - in east Auckland – AMETI aka the Eastern Busway Project, the Reeves Road Flyover, ageing and failing stormwater infrastructure, flooding, our beaches, those darned reserves and the awful new Aussie contractors who don’t know how quickly grass grows in NZ. Oh, and buses. The really stupid and ineffectual change to bus time tables earlier this year which has caused chaos, inconvenience overcrowding and brought about a busload of grievance. Surely AT has to act now, the candidates asked.

One of the points laboured by all candidates was a very real need for transparency (we’ve heard it before) and accountability (and this too). “Council needs to take heed of what the community wants,” said Montgomery.

community,” said Light.

The folks kept coming back to transport. We’re out on a limb.

Where is our light rail? Taylor put it succinctly. “I stand for Howick getting a better deal. It feels like we’re a forgotten colonial outpost again.”

And Donald, a current Howick Local Board member, kept returning to the might of ferries, and not just the well-patronised vessels heading out of Half Moon Bay. He reckons we ought very much to reconsider getting a ferry service going from of Howick Beach. “I’m not a great talker – I prefer to do things.”

Wong, quite rightly, paid tribute to these four and their heart for stepping up. “They’re putting themselves out there.”

No smoke and mirrors here. Just good, honest politicking.

Safer communities E

nsuring safe communities and a prevention-first approach to crime is an important goal for any Government.

That’s why it is good to see Labour picking up National’s position to increase the numbers of police working to prevent crime.

Increasing the resources for tackling crime before it starts is a good thing but we should never lose sight of the need to make sure that we continue to put people who commit crimes against others into prison.

The bottom line must always be to ensure the safety of our communities.

That’s why the Government’s recent direction on law and order is worrying.

The Government has held a Criminal Justice Summit where the Minister of Justice kept pushing his view that we should

soften up our bail, parole and sentencing laws to make it easier for criminals to get out of prison early and harder for them to get sent there in the first place.

What’s worse, the Government said that the stories of victims shouldn’t be told in the media while the summit is happening.

He says this is too emotive.

He doesn’t want those who have been burgled, robbed or assaulted to be heard.

The problem with the direction the Government is taking is that it doesn’t look at the cost to the victims of crime or the future victims of crime.

In Government, our approach to law and order put victims and the community first.

We strengthen bail and parole laws, we introduced three strikes and we were funding major prisons like Waikeria which would have seen major new rehabilita-

Investing in a 21st century prison and rehabilitation system while also ensuring that violent offenders are kept away from the community is our social investment approach at work.

It meant that we could support the most at-risk New Zealanders to fundamentally change their lives by getting social services agencies to work together to make a difference and protect the community at the same time.

The Government needs to get back on track and make sure our law and order policies make our communities safer.

Hair care at your local library Libraries are not only about books and digital services, instead they have become community hubs that engage communities.

This was amply demonstrated by a hair care workshop hosted recently at Botany Library, where 61 participants were involved in an interactive and informative hair care workshop taken by KESS Hair and Beauty.

360 degree views are out ➤➤From page 1 She said the commissioner’s reason for rejecting the HRRA’s call for 360 degree views was that there was not scope in the Unitary Plan for the 360° views under the heading of Local Public View which was the criteria used.

“We say that our heritage has been completely ignored,” she said.

“Recognising this, the Commissioners pointed out the abysmal absence of protection of heritage and historical association in the Unitary Plan.”

The Commissioner found: “There is still an issue with the appropriateness and need to maintain a 360° view and how this would be achieved in the context of the Unitary Plan provisions given that the Local Public Views overlay is focussed on coastal views and maritime context only.

“We find that there may be case for investigation of a separate viewshaft in the future based on heritage views within the region, but this would need to be supported by a full heritage assessment of such values in support of such a heritage.”

So where to from here? The HRRA is committed to pushing forward.

“We are certainly not giving up the fight. We need community support and financial commitment,” Mrs Mackereth said.

“Our lawyer praised the tenacity of Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association saying

A tentative date for the meeting is September 8 at 10.30 in the Nixon Hall in Sale St.

The Commissioner was only dealing with the viewshaft in PC3 and felt there were no grounds for him to consider 360 degrees as we requested due to the lack of Heritage protection in the Unitary Plan.

“This is a step in the right direction.

The Plan Change was a response to the community’s call for protection of the views from Stockade Hill and rezones some surrounding properties to ensure view shafts across Hauraki Gulf are protected from the top of the Hill.”

This was an important step towards the ultimate goal of the local community to maintain the views from Stockade Hill in all directions.

“I want to acknowledge the hard work of Gayleen Mackereth and the Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association for their important advocacy on behalf of Howick.”

“The Howick Residents and Ratepayers Association has been advocating with great passion on behalf of all Howick residents, as they understand the importance that Stockade Hill holds within Howick’s historical and cultural identity.”

Brown said it was vital to preserve our local environment, and recognise the important historical significance of Stockade Hill for the generations to come. “Not only are the views impressive, but Stockade Hill’s place in the community has historical significance and is a place of remembrance, with the cenotaph and hill playing an important role in remembering the Anzac’s and those who fought to protect our country. I will continue to stand alongside the community and support the advocacy of Howick residents.”

I’m not anti-car by any stretch — I love driving and I actually do it for fun sometimes — but I’ll be the first to acknowledge that cars are a pretty terrible mode of transport in a crowded urban setting.

Imagine if all those singleoccupant cars in the city were replaced by people on e-bikes — where’s the downside?

I don’t believe e-bikes will ever replace the non-powered variety and I certainly don’t want them to, but I’m very glad they exist.

hildren from Whitford Playcentre visited Gulf Views Rest Home in Cockle Bay aiming to build a relationship between the youngsters and the elderly residents.

Whitford Playcentre is a small, rural early childhood education (ECE) centre where parents who are trained in ECE attend with their children.

The children and parents decided to visit the retirement home after seeing examples from overseas about the benefits to both groups.

International research shows that social isolation and loneliness are causing health issues in the elderly population but that intergenerational friendships can improve their wellbeing, including combating helplessness and boredom, and improving memory.

Nurse manager Sue Milton said that many people don’t bring children to the home and that the Friday August 24 visit “lit up their eyes and bought joy to their hearts”.

The visit will not only benefit the Gulf Views residents … one of the four principles of Te Whariki, New Zealand’s internationally acclaimed early childhood curriculum, states that “the wider world of family and community is an integral part of the early childhood curriculum” and that “children learn and develop best

when their culture, knowledge and community are affirmed and when the people in their lives help them to make connections across settings.”

Three-year-old Cassie said: “I loved showing them my portfolio. They said that my painting was really special.”

Joshua, also three, exclaimed: “I had fun when we sung Baby Shark and did all the actions”.

Whitford Playcentre is open every weekday morning and is open for newborn to children up to six-years-old.

Whilst based in rural Whitford, the children venture into their community a few times every term. This visit is the first of an ongoing commitment to strengthening relationships with and supporting the elderly within the community.

T

he thought of running a half marathon for the first time is enough to scare most normal people – even if just a tiny bit.

It’s often a combination of nerves, excitement and perhaps a little bit of self doubt.

Those 21.1 kilometres can seem endless and overwhelming.

But it all becomes a whole lot easier when there’s a good cause – and a whole lot of support – behind it.

On October 28, Sarah Baker will take on her first ever half marathon in the name of raising money for the New Zealand Heart Foundation.

In 2016, her dad, a keen run-

ner, suffered a heart attack part way through the Kerikeri Marathon and survived.

He underwent a double bypass and eventually got back to pounding the pavement – but has decided this race will be his last official event before passing the baton to Sarah.

“Now he’s realised ‘maybe running is not the best thing for me anymore’. So he’s cutting back on it a bit, and I think he’s going to do one last run – which will be this one with me, and then he’ll go back to running for fitness and not pushing himself too hard. So I’ll do it, so he doesn’t have to!”

After Sarah decided to run in the ASB Auckland Marathon

to carry on her dad’s legacy, she decided fundraising for the Heart Foundation was a perfect fit. “I thought, ‘Why not?’ – I may as well do it for something, and the Heart Foundation means something to me now’.”

Sarah has so far raised around $250 for the charity – “but ideally I’d like to raise over a grand” – a goal she’ll hopefully achieve by rallying co-workers with promises of baked goods.

With race day just weeks away, she’s got a goal time in mind – one her dad pushes her to achieve on their training runs.

“It’s our little thing we have together. It’s quite nice and I’m pretty lucky to have an awesome dad like him.”

“Across the country we would have over 30 staff that I know of shaving their heads with 10 here at Akarana. Our UIL receptionist is doing a skydive, a cancer society fundraising promotion called ‘Jump for Cancer’.

“There are about six staff at Reofab and Metalcraft Christchurch shaving their heads on Friday and another group at Metal Line North Shore and Metalcraft Whangarei also.

“Hammond said the project was put together to promote health engagement with the workforce with the added bonus of giving the Cancer Society a funding boost.

On Daffodil Day tomorrow (August 31) a team at Akarana Timbers in Trugood Drive in Burswood, will step forward to have their heads shaved.

Ben Hammond, group health & safety manager at UIL, said the funds raised from this event as well as other donations raised by employees within the UIL group of companies across New Zealand will boost the Cancer Society’s work that is helping to lift the cancer survival rate for Kiwis.

As of last week, staff had raised more than $22,000 with UIL matching what staff have come up with.

Funding applications, Ethnic Communities Development Fund Minister for Ethnic Communities Jenny Salesa, has announced the opening of the 2018 funding round for the Ethnic Communities Development Fund (ECDF).

ECDF provides $520,000 annually to support the development of strong, inclusive and resilient ethnic communities throughout New Zealand.

“This fund contributes to improving social cohesion by supporting the development of established and emerging ethnic communities, now numbering more than 200 throughout the country,” Jenny Salesa said.

T

he Cancer Society needs your support this Daffodil Day so that together we can beat cancer in New Zealand.

On Friday August 31, more than over 12,000 volunteers will take to the streets around the country as part of New Zealand’s largest street appeal.

Every dollar dropped into their collection buckets, donated online, or in any ANZ branch, will be spent on supporting New Zealanders with all types of cancer and helping prevent future cancers through vital research.

“We have 12,000 amazing volunteers who, come rain or shine, are committed to helping the country unite against cancer. Many of them have their own personal story and wear their daffodil, not only as a symbol of hope, but to remember the loved ones they have lost to cancer, “says Mike Kernaghan, CEO of the Cancer Society of New Zealand.

Now in its 28th year, Daffodil Day is the Cancer Society’s largest annual fundraising event. The money raised allows the charity to provide practical support to those affected by cancer - patients as well as whanau and friends.

“When someone hears that they, or a loved one, has cancer it is devastating. The impact of a diagnosis can be far-reaching. There are often so many unanswered questions and so much to consider that it can be overwhelming for everyone involved.

“It might be how they will get to hospital, where they will stay during treatment, how they will feed their pet while away from home, or who they can talk to about their cancer.”

“Thanks to the generosity of New Zealanders on Daffodil Day the Cancer Society can step up with practical and emotional support.”

The Cancer Society offers accommodation close to all major hospitals in New Zealand for patients and their carers if their treatment requires frequent hospital visits, but they do not live nearby.

During 2017, the Society provided 49,000 bed nights and drove almost 4700 patients to and from their treatment, covering more than one million kilometres.

Since the service began in 2007, the Cancer Society’s free information helpline (0800 CANCER) has had more than 95,000 calls, and its staff of cancer nurses have spent more than 4540 hours providing support and advice to Kiwis affected by cancer in 2017.

The Cancer Society is committed to reducing the incidence of future cancers through its health promotion activities and is the largest charitable funder of cancer research in the country. Yet, despite this commitment to providing needed support to people affected by cancer the Society receives

I was very disappointed to see a letter in your newspaper (Times, August 23) regarding the recent, tragic death of two babies in Samoa.

There have been charges laid, but we know little of the details yet. For your correspondent to use this as an excuse to push the anti-vax bandwagon is of real concern.

To suggest that a baby should have a vaccination only if it shows signs of being unwell is utterly ignorant. Vaccination is used as an “ambulance at the top of the cliff” for healthy babies.

In fact, being unwell would be an indicator to withhold vaccination.

To further mention “bacteria being pumped into their bodies” would surely be enough to separate this correspondent from any semblance of logic.

Then to refer to vaccines as being untested! The slightest attempt to research the history of vaccines would reveal the indisputable science behind the use of vaccines.

In this case, it is possible that there was (sadly) some culpability on the part of the nurses maybe by knowing the storage conditions had been incorrect, or perhaps through incorrect preparation of the vaccine prior

to it being administered. We just don’t know at the moment. Of course, investigations are being carried out into this awful event.

The idea that our health practitioners are in the pocket of pharmaceutical companies is an absolute insult. Those individuals who “push” the use of vaccines do have their own children, or others they care about, protected by vaccination.

I suggest your correspondent waits for more information - and pays attention to real science, rather than to pseudo science which, unfortunately, gets too much publicity.

Being a member of the Howick Local Board could benefit him for the reason that the voting public do seem to favour a familiar name over an unfamiliar one.

What is done is done. Just a shame.

Jason Ironside, Mellons Bay have an impressive track record for serving the community and others whose names are well known for other reasons. Jim’s name is well known, but how has he actually performed as an elected member of council?

As Jim supported developments that were unnecessary and extremely damaging to Macleans Park, his recent publicised enthusiasm for clearing some culverts in the park appears to be a PR stunt.

Jim dons the dress of a town cryer and wanders around the village calling out “Welcome to Howick, God Save the Queen”.

This has certainly put Jim’s name out in front, but should the public vote for Jim to be an elected member of council for doing that?

Jim supports a ferry service from Howick. Why, when this proposal is an inevitable dud for the reason that there is a lack of space for buses and cars at Howick Beach, not to mention the damage to the marine environment from such a development in this area.

Perhaps I don’t know enough about Jim. But maybe it is time for him to step aside to allow a new candidate the chance of becoming our elected councillor and the opportunity to prove their worth.

AT troubles

I was wondering if anyone would like to run an article on a problem I am currently experiencing with Auckland Transport?

I lodged a complaint five months ago regarding the safety of the crossing at Chapel Road and surrounding areas which could be made a lot safer if they were to realign the lights but I just got brushed off with a pathetic reply this morning.

Apparently because no one has died in the last five years they don’t want to take any action to make our roads safer for our children.

I thought the local papers might be a good starting point to let the public know Auckland Transports stance on our children’s safety.

Our investigation of pedestrian safety issues in Gracechurch Road also showed that there have been no crashes involving pedestrians at either the Chapel Road intersection or closer to the school.

It is possible to use the traffic island close to the roundabout to cross the road in two stages. Whilst this may not be the favoured crossing point, it is safer for younger children as they only have one traffic movement to observe and estimate approach speed and time to cross.

We understand this may not be the outcome desired, we trust this provides clarification as to the reasons we are unable to justify changes. We will continue to monitor this area and should anything change we will review this decision.

The issue is people turning right from Gracechurch drive onto Chapel road turn when the traffic stops for the crossing.

They are so quick to turn while there is a gap that they just keep driving because the wait to turn here is lengthy and people act in haste.

I can assure you, you will regret making the decision you have. It is only adults who have prevented a major accident and I have discussed this matter with the walking school bus who also use this crossing and they have had the same experiences.

Until you realign the lights and make this safer you are sitting on a time bomb and let me assure you if an incident does occur and someone is injured I will be the first to bring out these emails and let everyone know your position on this matter.

You have pretty much told me nothing has happened so until someone is killed we will do nothing. Shame on you, I am talking about children’s lives here not a budget.

I will leave you with this thought – would you be happy talking to a family who have lost a child while using your crossing, telling them that because in five years no one had been harmed you decided to do nothing? Even though someone who uses it regularly tried their best to make it safer? Think about that and if you feel absolutely at ease with that thought then fine, do nothing.

137 new officers

istrict Commander Jill Rogers has welcomed the 137 officers allocated to Counties Manukau District this month by Police Commissioner Mike Bush.

The new staff were allocated as part of the 1800 additional Police funded through a $298.8 million increase in Budget 2018 that built on an increase from the previous year.

“Having extra officers will increase our ability to prevent victimisations. It increases our capacity to be in the right place at the right time. The whole community will benefit,” says Superintendent Rogers.

“With an ever-expanding pop-

ulation, we naturally face more demand.

These extra staff will enable us to have more police officers out on the street and enable us to increase our focus on organised crime and reduce the harm these criminals cause our community.

In addition to increasing frontline officers to prevent and respond to crime and calls for service, Counties Manukau District will establish a new Precision Targeting Team that will focus on priority and prolific offenders to reduce crime such as burglary and robbery.

The allocation also includes the introduction of a Serious and Organised Crime Taskforce

in order to combat and prevent gang-related crime such as methamphetamine supply, violence and intimidation, and other serious offending. “We want the best for our community.

Priority locations can change depending on a number of factors and our new resource will assist us to be more flexible and agile to meet the community’s needs.

This will ultimately not only increase safety but will improve feelings of safety and security.”

All 12 District Commanders will now be working their leadership teams to determine deployment decision at an area and station level.

Following on from the Auckland Premier Competition win last term, the Saint Kentigern College Girls Football team continued on to win the Knockout Cup. Wins over Avondale in the quarter-final and Westlake in the semifinal, the girls were without their captain and NZ U20 representative who was out injured.

They met Baradene in the final who they had drawn with earlier in the season. The half-time the score was 1-1 then 2-2 at full time. At the end of extra time it was still 2-all so they went to penalties with Saint

Kentigern winning 3-2 to win backto-back titles from 2017.

Meanwhile the Football Boys’ 1st XI are the Auckland Premier Winners – the first time they have won since 1989. They were unbeaten only having 1 draw in 14 games scoring 55 goals for and only 9 against.

Kieran Richards won the golden boot award for the season. The trophy was presented on Saturday at the last game.

Hockey Boys 1st XI

Following on from the Auckland title last term, the boys team went

through the season unbeaten to win the Super City for the first time, scoring 40 goals – with 3 against in the 9 Supercity games.

The boys beat Kings 3-1 in the semi final. The game with Westlake was an exciting battle with both teams having chances during the game. The score was locked at 0-0 with 1 minute to go and Thomas Vaughan slotted a goal with 20 seconds left on the clock to secure the win for the first time.

The team now moves on to preparation for the Rankin Cup in Tauranga during winter tournament week.

Is life really better for renters?

T

he public is being asked for feedback on new Government proposals aimed at making life better for renters.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford said this week that tenancy laws were antiquated and didn’t reflect the fact that renting is now a long-term reality for many families.

A third of all New Zealanders now rent, he said.

“Insecure tenure can force families to continually move house. This is particularly tough on children whose education suffers when they have to keep changing schools,” Twyford said.

He urged landlords, tenants and other interested people to have their say on the proposals covered in a discussion document on reforming the Residential Tenancies Act released today.

“We want to strike a balance between providing tenants with security of tenure and allowing them to make their house a home, while protecting the rights and interests of landlords.”

The discussion document covers proposals on: ■■ Ending no cause tenancy terminations while ensuring landlords can still get rid of rogue tenants ■■ increasing the amount of

notice a landlord must generally give tenants to terminate a tenancy from 42 days to 90 days ■■ whether changes to fixedterm agreements are justified to improve security of tenure ■■ limiting rent increases to once a year ■■ whether there should be limitations on the practice of ‘rent bidding’ ■■ whether the general obligations that tenants and landlords have remain fit for purpose ■■ better equipping tenants and landlords to reach agreement about pets and minor alternations to the home ■■ whether further controls for boarding houses are needed to provide adequate protection for boarding house tenants ■■ introducing new tools and processes into the compliance and enforcement system.

“As people rent for longer, they want to be secure in their homes and put down roots in their community,” Twyford said.

“That’s why making life better for renters is an important aspect of the Government’s housing plan.”

“If Mr Twyford thinks Government price controls will stop tenants paying more for rent, he’s being naive.

“By limiting rent increases to once a year, landlords will be forced to raise rents higher and sooner, meaning tenants will actually be paying the same or more in the long run.”

If a landlord now wants to sell their property, they will have to wait 90 days, meaning settlements of sales will be extended by double.

“But if the tenant leaves the property before the 90 days is up, the landlord will end up with an empty house waiting for a buyer,” Collins said.

“It is not clear whether the bond can be raised at the same time as the single rent increase – so even more costs could be put on the tenant.

“On top of this, the Government has a Bill currently at Select Committee that prohibits the charging of letting fees on rental properties.

“This has been criticised by the real estate industry and various stakeholders because letting fees are required for agents to work on behalf of the property owner.

“It is likely the cost of the letting fee will be passed onto the tenant in the form of higher rents – a double whammy of rent increases.”

Barrett emulates Carter B

efore Beauden Barrett scored four tries and accumulated 30 points in the All Blacks 40-12 second rugby test walloping of the Wallabies at Eden Park last Saturday, Dan Carter’s Wellington test against the 2005 British and Irish Lions was considered the greatest performance by a No 10.

That day the cool-headed Carter’s master class included three tries and 33 points.

He never quite reached such heights again but he went close in signing off in 2015 after New Zealand successfully defended their world crown at Twickenham.

Fittingly, Carter was named International Player of the Year that same year, an honour Barrett has claimed in the two years since.

Before Carter finished in a blaze of glory, there were many critics who claimed injuries had blunted his brilliance and that others like Aaron Cruden and Barrett deserved to start ahead of him.

At that time Barrett was the super sub, normally coming on to play at fullback and inevitably scorching over to score a try.

However so entrenched had he become as the All Blacks first-five over the past two years, the excellent Cruden, now followed by Liam Sopoaga, have taken their talent abroad in search of the big bucks.

Yet even Barrett can’t take his place for granted in the face of the challenges presented by Crusader

pivot Richie Mo’unga and Chiefs’ Houdini, Damian McKenzie. In fact Mo’unga was the outstanding player of this year’s Super Rugby championship.

However All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen remained loyal to Barrett on the basis of his greater experience although he acknowledges Mo’unga’s time will come.

Whether that will be against Argentina in Nelson after a fortnight’s break remains to be seen although the Pumas are no mugs, having beaten South Africa 32-19 last weekend.

Personally, I would like to see Mo’unga and Barrett both start, with the versatile Barrett moved to second-five or centre where Mo’unga’s subtle pass could create gaps to exploit Barrett’s pace.

However, with so many midfield candidates to choose from, that’s unlikely to happen.

A shame really because it has already happened at fullback where Jordie Barrett has replaced Ben Smith who has been moved to the right wing.

The 6ft 5in Jordie made a good fist of it too, and Smith an even better one on the wing where his vision and ability to link with his supports was so valuable.

Nevertheless, Smith remains, along with Israel Folau, the world’s finest fullback.

Yet the selectors made the shift

Meanwhile, it was great to see the Warriors produce their finest game of the season to clinch a top eight NRL playoff spot with their 36-16 win against the Panthers.

Especially pleasing was the way five-eighth Mason Lino gelled with Shaun Johnson in stepping in for Blake Green, as he had so well for Johnson earlier in the season.

Straight running and snappy passing produced six tries, one to the elusive Lino and three to champion right wing David Fusitu’a.

Having reached the playoffs for the first time since 2011, the Warriors need to set their sights higher than the top eight and reproduce the same form that tamed the Panthers.

All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen remained loyal to Beauden Barrett (pictured) on the basis of his greater experience although he acknowledges Mo’unga’s time will come.

The Saturday games saw the start of the senior team finals.

The division three women’s final matched two Howick Pakuranga teams against each other. The 3A team won the round robin but were beated by a goal in the final minutes by the 3B team to end a tight match with fierce competition.

The division two women then took up the challenge playing Somerville in a game that again went right down to the wire. Tied at full time, the game went to penalty shootouts. Eight seconds with a one on one with goalkeeper and the Division 2 ladies came out winners, clinching the shootout and the title.

The division one ladies came second in the season’s table only on goal difference and were looking for revenge and bragging rights. Again, playing Somerville, they came out strongly but the game ended in a nil-all draw and it was back to the penalty shootout. The Howick Pakuranga ladies won 1–0 in front of good support from the crowd.

The premier men’s team final saw Howick Pakuranga up against Roskill Eden.

Howick Pakuranga won the round robin in both the Intercity round one and the Auckland competition, but were up against a strong Roskill Eden team and knew that earlier season success counted for little.

chances and going down to a couple of Roskill Eden goals, Howick Pakuranga couldn’t get enough pressure on the opposition and didn’t end the season in the way they would have liked, going down 6 -1.

Overall, this was one of the best season results that the premier men’s team has had and, with a

good proportion of the team coming through the club ranks from the juniors, it is testament to the club structure and officials to have a team from the area competing at this level.

On the Sunday the men’s division four team had a great 5 – 0 victory against University to round off a successful finals weekend.

Howick Pakuranga also won the awards for the most successful men’s club, the most successful women’s club, leading to the award for being the most successful club in the 2018 season.

Diana Dowdle accepted the silverware and thanked the supporters, officials, coaches and managers who all contribute to the club’s success.

The club won the awards for the most successful men’s club, the most successful women’s club, leading to the award for being the most successful club in the 2018 season.

Finals weekend at Lloyd Elsmore pitted the top two teams in each division against each other to claim the Division title and it was a busy day for Howick Pakuranga.

Represented in eight finals with seven of the teams winning their grades through the round robin stages, some silverware was already in the cupboard.

The weekend got off to a winning start on Friday night with the premier girls and premier boys, coached by Black Sticks Dominic Newman and Sam Lane, beating opposition from Somerville in both finals. The boys won 2 -1 and the girls in a penalty shootout after the game ended in a draw.

This is where the future strength of the club lies and it is looking strong, a club spokesperson said.

Both teams gained inspiration from coaches who play at the highest level. They both headed the round robin competition and managed to win their finals. The championship boys team also came out winners 6–3 in their match against Roskill Eden to win the championship B grade.
