C

onsider this – a student gets into a wild rage in a classroom and starts throwing everything around including books and a pair of scissors. He starts kicking chairs and sends a desk flying across the room. The rest of the children watch, terrified.

The teacher quickly evacuates the class to keep other children safe.

The student ends up smashing up the

entire classroom. The teacher is stressed out by the disruptive behaviour. She can’t cope with it anymore. In another classroom, there is a huge gap between the students with high needs in a class.

There is a mix of students with a range of disabilities from speech problems to auditory processing difficulties, epilepsy and a couple of children on the autistic spectrum disorder. They all need special attention.

“I am once again calling on the Government to support my Bill when it returns to Parliament for its second and third readings, as urgent action needs to be taken to protect New Zealanders from what is quickly becoming a deadly epidemic.”

Lottery supports Citizens Advice Bureau Pakuranga Citizens Advice Bureau received a grant of $5000 from the Lottery Grants Board this week.

Louise Boswell, the bureau’s manager says, “We receive funding from the Lottery Grants Board each year and it is greatly appreciated. This funding will help us continue to deliver a high quality service to the people of Pakuranga-Eastern Manukau.

“Our trained volunteer interviewers can help people with information on almost any issue including consumer rights, employment issues, finance and tax, benefit entitlements, housing and tenancy, and much more. No problem is too big or too small.”

The Lottery Grants Board benefits the community by distributing the profits from

state lotteries such as Lotto, Instant Kiwi, and Daily Keno.

They are a major ongoing supporter of Citizens Advice Bureaux New Zealand Inc (CABNZ) and its 82 member bureau / branches. “There are no teachers applying for ae job,” says Mr McIntyre.

His deputy principal at Owairoa Primary, Christine Bull, says that equally stressful is the responsibility of being a Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO).

It gives her very little time to complete other aspects of her job. She ends up spending all her time trying to ensure that children with special educational needs and disabilities within the school receive the support they need and deserve.

“Our school is now employing 12 teacher aides, paid from locally-raised funds, to assist in classes,” says Ms Bull.

“I have to meet up with the families and try to figure out what the real problem is and then connect them to the special agencies for help.

It could be that the parents have separated and the child’s routine is disturbed because he is living in more than one home. Or that the parent has major family/health issues and is more dependent on the school to look after the child. There are so many other issues to be considered,” she says.

“The largest growing problem for children in all schools is the rising anxiety levels and it’s “a trend that is growing with children becoming distraught and anxious”.

There is a great deal of time involved in having meetings and recording all the data, she says. “We often have to play counsellor, which is something we are not really

trained for.”

Leyette Callister, principal of Howick Primary, is equally concerned about the underresourcing of schools.

She says that while inclusion is good, there is a point where the Ministry of Education needs to tell the parents that they need to put their child in a special needs environment.

“We have a policy of inclusion and catering to every child’s needs but it gets to a ridiculous stage because of being under-resourced.

We just don’t have enough teacher aides. It’s important to understand that while we really enjoy having your child at school, we also have a responsibility of keeping other children safe.”

A case in point is an autistic child at school. “The child couldn’t sit still and would keep circling around the class which was very disconcerting for the teacher and students.

There were times she would get so agitated she’d snap a pencil and start chewing on it. It was inappropriate behaviour and, unfortunately, the mother wasn’t willing to work with us.

“Another child with Down syndrome once ran away from school. Fortunately the child was found. The

Ministry of Education then fenced the property around the classroom with a patch of green.”

She says that additional resourcing is needed to help

“Recruiting teachers is the biggest challenge. With the expectation and increasing demand on the teacher as well as accountability and paper work increasing, from 60 applicants for a teaching job, it has reduced to three or four,” he says.

“To support our children we have to dip into our own school funding for more teacher aides. Fortunately for us, the Board of Trustees have been very supportive.

Deputy principal Tracy Leader, who has the additional responsibility of dealing with SENCO, reiterates that sometimes they have no idea what they are dealing with.

“We are not psychologists.”

Admitting that it can get very frustrating, she says that there are multi-agencies involved when it comes to dealing with high needs students. “You are passed on from one department to another. We have to make referrals to the Resource Teachers for Learning and Behaviour (RTLB) at Pakuranga Intermediate which is a fabulous service but they are under a lot of pressure as well.

“The whole system is at a breaking point.”

“In my opinion, our much experienced teachers would go without an increase of salary if there are better working conditions.”

otany Road will be safer and less congested, Auckland Transport (AT) says, following its proposed changes to two major intersections.

AT is seeking feedback until August on proposed changes to the Millhouse Drive and Cascades Road intersections.

The changes would see the roads widened to create new traffic lanes, improved traffic signals and road markings, high friction surfacing, a signalised pedestrian crossing and a raised zebra crossing.

Melanie Alexander, AT’s traffic engineering manager says a study by Auckland Transport found there were long traffic delays at each intersection during peak times and pedestrian safety needed to be improved.

“The changes will deal to the significant delays motorists currently face plus there isn’t a controlled pedestrian crossing at the slip lane from Botany Road onto Cascades Road which makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross this busy road.

“We’re committed to making it safer for people to be able to walk to where they need to go in their local area.”

Helping Kiwi kids achieve potential Ensuring that our students get the investment of time and attention from New Zealand’s world MP for Botany class teachers is one of the best things that we can do to ensure better educations for our future generations.

An easy and effective way we can achieve that is to reduce the size of the classes for teachers in order to ensure more one-on-one time between an individual student and their teacher.

Our motivation is simple; we want to ensure a future where our students, parents and teachers feel like they are getting more out of our education system.

That’s why National has announced our commitment to increasing the number of primary teachers to reduce class sizes and give kids more teacher time.

By seeking to increase the number of teachers and decrease class sizes we can help ensure that every child has the help to reach their potential.

All of us will be able to remember the positive effect a good teacher had on our education and smaller class sizes helps to harness that positivity. By allowing more time with individual students, teachers can focus on a more tailored approach to each student in their class and that can only be a good thing.

This is a policy that is good for students but also continues to recognise the need to support teachers.

Schools currently get one teacher for every 29 nine and 10-year-olds. It’s lower than that for younger children.

By bringing that ratio down, we can help to ensure that schools are staffed in such a way to give teachers more time to invest in individual students at a stage of their lives when they need it most.

This is an idea that provides the support to teachers to connect with individual students and tailor our curriculum to better suit those students’ needs.

We’ve put the idea on the table and we’re committed to seeing it through. Over the next two years,we will be working hard with teachers, parents and communities to ensure that we can put forward a detailed and comprehensive plan to implement in 2020.

rawford House Pharmacy in Howick’s Picton Street has won the Green Cross Health Innovation in Delivering People Centred Care award at the annual NZ Pharmacy Awards.

This award was presented to Basma Hikmet, who manages the pharmacy.

Pharmacist and owner Leane Steele said: “The campaign we ran, that was the basis of our entry, was a programme we implemented in conjunction with the Crawford Medical practice (next door) and our local PHO - East Health.

“We initiated our plan by presenting to the doctors’ meeting (around 14 doctors) about antibiotic resistance and the importance of not using antibiotics unnecessarily, especially in viral illness (for example for colds and flu).

“The PHO concurrently issued “Responsible Antibiotic Prescriber” to those doctors who were involved in the PHO programme.

“We felt we could support/ encourage change in behaviour, because we often saw scripts for antibiotics when it seemed unnecessary.”

ness, firstly symptom relief (pain relief, nasal sprays, cough medicine and decongestants). Secondly the pharmacy gave them options of research-backed/evidencebased natural health products they could recommend with confidence.

The doctors found it useful to have options to ‘prescribe’ when antibiotics were not indicated, as doctors are often pressured by patients for antibiotics.

“We also agreed a strategy with doctors around ‘back pocket scripts’ – which is when the doctor gives a prescription for antibiotics if symptoms get worse – intending patients to wait a few days before filling.

“We, along with the doctors,

had posters and pamphlets promoting the message. The collaboration between pharmacy and medical practice made for seamless information and education being offered to patients to ensure they felt confident with their experience.”

Mrs Steele said they immediately noticed a significant decrease in antibiotic prescriptions, along with an adoption of their recommendations for alternatives.

“For us in the pharmacy, we were pleased to forego our dispensing income on antibiotic scripts and were rewarded with increased sales in the other areas,” she said.

“In health we talk a lot about collaboration and

integration. The judges and also David Clark (Minister of Health, guest speaker at event) made particular mention of our entry and how important it was demonstrating this to others in our profession.

“Our chosen focus of Antibiotic Resistance is very topical and of great significance in health currently.”

The collaboration and relationship with doctors means they are able to support each other with further projects in the future.

“Currently we are working with doctors on further PHO initiatives and I personally really appreciate being able to facilitate pharmacists working to the top of their scope,” said Mrs Steele.

How did councillors vote?

Re Local by-elections and information to help our voting.

Would it please be possible to ask a question of our local politicians and local council members via the Times?

It is a question on the lips of almost everyone I speak to and it would be good to get some clear answers.

With the Howick by-election looming and the Auckland mayoral election not far away, we ( the people of Auckland) want to know which councillors and politicians voted in favour of having the Auckland fuel tax imposed upon us?

What appears to be a majority of voters feel this tax has arrived as a decision made by certain elected officials and without any reference to the wishes of the voting population.

Having clarity on who was in favour would be a great help in making our voting choices going forwards.

Clearly as ‘electorate’ we are deemed not qualified to have any input into this process so again a list of those elected officials who have decided to speak for us, without reference to our concerns and views would be most appreciated.

It seems that the only way we can express our views nowadays is at the polls.

On June 21 the Howick Bridge Club held its annual fundraising event for the Totara Hospice: South Auckland.

This comprised an auction of goods kindly donated by local businesses and club members plus a bridge tournament which attracted entries from clubs within the Auckland region.

Our tireless organiser Mary Wood once again did an excellent job in personally visiting and securing goods, vouchers and services from 116 local businesses and the arts groups, to whom we extend our heartfelt thanks.

Special thanks also extended to Lenice Clarkson for her valued contribution in organising the auction items, raffles and prizes.

The Howick Bridge Club has been running this Hospice event for the past 30 years and this year raised $6400 for such a worthy and deserving cause.

MetlifeCare (Pakuranga Village on Edgewater Drive) have responded positively and are now fixing the problems with the lift and stairs that were the problem from the first report earlier in the year (Times, February 22).

They are currently making repairs to the over bridge that leads to my mum’s apartment.

They are going to be completely covering the bridge

There were 13 votes in favour and seven against.

The tax will expire in 10 years and kicked in for Auckland commuters on July 1.

I had the pleasure of attending a meeting at the village in Edgewater Drive on Wednesday.

Present was all the local management team, production and design team for the new buildings that are currently with the council for approval and the CEO Glen Sowry.

At this meeting for all residents and their families, they informed everyone of the new changes that will be taking place over the next two years.

They are going to be putting things into place to make the disruption of this new build as minimal as possible for the current residents.

I was able to thank the CEO personally for this response and I look forward to seeing the new look Metlife Care Edgewater Drive.

Can we protect humans?

It is truly bizarre that we can put up barriers to protect nature from human intervention such as the kauri die-back disease problem, and rightly so, but why is it that we cannot put up barriers to protect humans from nature, as we have just experienced where the two people were washed off the rocks and drowned while fishing on the West Coast.

These rocks are known to be dangerous, and yet the unsuspecting couple were able to clamber over slippery rocks to meet their untimely end at the hands of nature.

owick Brass are the new national champions. The band has again triumphed on the competition stage, with the recent win marking the band’s most convincing victory at a national level.

The band has been working hard under musical director Kerry Wood and drum major Joe Williams for the past three months, preparing a total of three stage works and one street march performance to compete with the best bands from throughout New Zealand at the 138th National Brass Band Contest, held this year in Blenheim.

However, whilst musical preparation began early in 2018, fundraising and management efforts working toward the 2018 national contest began earnestly after the last national event the band attended in July 2016.

The process of both fundraising and the mere logistics in getting a band of 45 community musicians to a national event in regional New Zealand is a distinctly significant undertaking. Howick Brass delivered on this hard work, presenting four exceptional performances which saw them return home with an impressive array of silverware to be engraved.

Champion drum major Joe Williams led the band to victory through the streets of Blenheim with an impressive display of drill and swagger, competing for the title of Champion Marching Band in the Parade of Bands, with 26 other bands strutting their stuff.

Howick Brass also received a special mention from the panel of adjudicators for their entertainment factor – consisting of a very talented Baldrick as official barrier carrier throughout the performance of the Blackadder march.

Over the following days, the band then competed on the contest stage, performing the set test work – a premiere of a New Zealand composition written for the 2018 Championships by 20 year-old Jack Bewley, entitled A Theme Fading – along with the

band’s chosen reflective item Glorify His Name and the major own choice work Lake of the Moon.

Returning home champions, the band is not resting on its laurels and has already begun preparations for a major concert that immediately precedes the Auckland Regional Championships in September. They will be competing against stiff competition from both the Auckland and Waikato/Bay of Plenty regions.

Howick Brass is a strong and established community band which has served the communities of Howick and east Auckland since 1959. The band rehearses in the heart of Howick at its band rooms on the Howick Domain and welcomes new members of any age or ability who may be interested in making music within the community and beyond.

NZSS team netball named

New Zealand’s best secondary school players have been named to take on several international age-group teams later this year – and two of them are from local schools.

The 14-strong New Zealand Secondary Schools team has been confirmed by Netball New Zealand and will travel to Canberra from October 1-5 to play the Australian U17 squad and an England U17 side.

The local players named in the squad are Nanise Waqairo from Howick College (from

Northern district) and Tayla Earle from Saint Kentigern College (Northern).

New Zealand Secondary Schools coach Mary-Jane Araroa said the squad had impressed during performances at the National Development Camp in January as well as the National Age Group Championships in July.

“This is such an important age-group for the development of Netball in New Zealand and it’s exciting to help these players realise

their potential,” she said.

“The athletes named in the New Zealand Secondary Schools team have stood out at a number of events and we’re looking forward to working with them to help them take that next step.

“It is always a challenge to play Australian teams but we’re looking forward to that challenge with this exciting group of athletes.”

Head coach Araroa and assistant Charissa Barham will name their Captain and Vice-Captain at a later date.

Youth council’s fresh perspective

ast week the young people of Howick had their voices heard by the Howick Local Board.

The Howick Youth Council presented young people’s solutions to the community’s most pressing issues to local board members in a workshop last Tuesday.

The Howick Youth Council operates under the Howick Local Board to ensure voices of youth are heard and hoped bringing attention to young people’s ideas will guide the local board’s future decisions, says youth council chairperson Zachary Wong.

During the workshop the youth council handed over a set of recommendations written by local students covering issues of the environment, transport, equity, mental and physical wellbeing, and civic participation.

“We think it’s really important that the voices of young people are heard by our decision-makers. We’re really excited that we’ve got a document that represents the wishes and the aspirations of young people on some really important issues affecting them,” says Wong.

“We’re hopeful that the local board will be able to implement some of the suggestions these young people have put forward.”

ment came from discussions among local high school students that took place at the Howick Youth Council’s annual youth summit in May. Students were given a chance to hear from experts in each of the topics, Wong says, and use this information to help guide their recommendations.

Students were also asked to vote on different commendations to determine which were most widely supported.

“These recommendations are all a true reflection of what young people in our community think and how they want to see community’s issues handled.

The Howick Youth Council was just there to facilitate writing the final document,” he says.

“This is the first time we have ever worked with the Howick Local Board to recommend real change in the community. Nothing like this has ever been done before in our area so it’s really

good to hear what people want to see happen in our community and be able to help bring that to life.”

The youth council handed over 35 recommendations to the board.

The main recommendations were: ■■ Accreditation for retailers and local companies for their commitment to reducing their environmental impact to address how businesses affect New Zealand’s environment.

■■ Address the lack of awareness and understanding of mental wellbeing by developing a community symbol, campaign or event.

■■ Provide short courses on life skills to better prepare youth for their transition into adulthood.

■■ Make civics education accessible for young people by integrating talks and discussions in schools.

Digging deep to plant 2000 natives A

nchorage Park School students dreamed of a native bush walk with bird feeders, weta enclosures, insect hotels and worm farms for their school. They even produced a model of what the finished transformation would look like.

Thanks to $10,000 from TREEmendous – a joint initiative between Project Crimson and The Mazda Foundation – that dream became a reality last Saturday.

Spotted digging in the rain were local Member of Parliament Simeon Brown along with MPs Priyanca Radhakrishnan and Deborah Russell, the chairperson for Environmental Select Committee Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug Man), shark scientist Riley Elliott and Peter Wolfcamp from The Block and singer, Boh Runga.

alongside teachers, pupils and parents, local community members, Mazda Foundation Trustees and the team from Project Crimson, turning an unused area on the school grounds into a dedicated outdoor learning space.

They planted more than 2000 native plants, shrubs and trees to create a place of exploration.

School principal Belinda Johnston hopes that turning previous bare grass into a space where the students can learn more about ecosystems through hands-on experience will inspire a lifelong care for the environment in the children.

“It’s easy for kids to just zone out when we teach them about the environment in a traditional classroom. Having a hands-on learning space will help them to really understand and connect with ecosystems of our local environment.

“My hope is that by being

able to get stuck in and get their hands dirty, the children will understand the importance of taking care of the wonderful wildlife we have in our community.”

She also thanked staff members and the wider community.

Kleinpaste – TREEmendous ambassador and Project Crimson Trustee, says the school’s passion for the environment was inspiring, and their strong sense of community was clear from the people that turned up on the day to help out.

Anchorage Park was the final school to be visited by the TREEmendous team this year. This event marks the 44th school to get the TREEmendous treatment in the last 11 years.

The winners of the 2018 Estuary Art and Ecology Prize have been selected by judge Paul Brobbel and are currently on display in Malcolm Smith Gallery.

Congratulations to Marion Wassenaar for winning first prize for her unique contribution to the exhibition. Her work, Unplugged, involved the incineration of a book discussing the vulnerability of Auckland’s infrastructure, using the remaining carbon as a filtering system to attempt to purify water.

This work ironically uses one of Auckland’s (literally) darkest moments and turns it into an aid for our pollution crisis, described by Paul as “a challenging artwork – intelligent with possibly an element of humour to some”.

This work encourages us to consider our impact on the biosphere and think about what small changes we could make to our daily routine that might help our planet stay clean and green.

Second prize has been awarded to Wei Lun Ha for his piece, Colours that I wouldn’t want to see. This work engages viscerally with the Estuary by using water and rubbish found within to paint a landscape of the waterway.

Though from afar the colours may seem vibrant and dynamic, upon closer inspection it is clear that these colours, representing foreign plastics, are out of place in the natural environment.

Michelle Farrell and Mish O’Neill were given merit awards for their considered approaches to the Estuary and its representation in their works.

Farrell’s delicate ink work evokes a sense of calm, setting it apart from many other works in the exhibition.

The bright silhouette of the plant leaps out of the frame, at once lively and eerie. Though these works are polar opposites in their appearance, both sensitively respond to the local ecology and encourage deeper thought about our personal relationship with the environment.

Visitors to the exhibition are invited to select their favourite work by casting a vote for the People’s Choice Award. What do King, Carpenter and Moldau have in common?

All three will be featured in Manukau Symphony Orchestra’s upcoming concert Moldau at the Vodafone Events Centre on Saturday August 18 at 7.30pm.

Under the baton of guest conductor, Timothy Carpenter, the Manukau Symphony Orchestra will perform The Moldau by Smetana that evokes the sounds of one of Bohemia’s great rivers as it courses through the Czech countryside to reach the city of Prague.

Despite having performed numerous concertos in its 25-year history, Manukau Symphony Orchestra will perform Schumann’s romantic Cello Concerto for the first time, with prize-winning, Berlin-based Kiwi cellist Edward King, whose collaboration with the MSO is another first for the orchestra.

Dvorák’s powerful Symphony No 7, considered one of his finest, will round off the concert on a dramatic note with its Slavonic musical elements portraying the composer’s deep love for his country.

Established in 1993, the Manukau Symphony Orchestra is a ‘next step’ community orchestra with the aim to provide youths, adult amateur and professional musicians a platform to continue their musical journeys.

“The MSO is not your ordinary orchestra,” says Anne Esterman, a Howick resident who has played violin with the orchestra since day one.

“It’s an orchestra that young players aim to play for. It’s a place for those who, like me, have played or studied music, to enjoy and stay in touch with our musical side, even if we have followed a different career path.”

“It’s an orchestra with a “very special spirit” with its roots firmly in the community,” says Mrs Esterman.

“Those movies were my whole world! Thankfully mum suspected there was something there and put me into singing lessons.”

Winter chill impacts real estate sales volumes, but not prices T

he winter chill has impacted real estate sales volumes across the country in June but has done little to halt price rises in most regions, according to the latest data from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ).

In June, the median price across the country rose by 5.7 per cent to a record equal median of $560,000 up from $530,000 the same time last year. Additionally, the New Zealand excluding Auckland median price remained at a record equalling figure of $460,000 in June up 7 per cent on June 2017. However, Auckland’s median price decreased by 0.7 per cent year-on-year to $850,000 down from $856,000 last year.

New Zealand’s most expensive three territorial authorities are Auckland City with a median of $1,010,000, North Shore City with a median of $975,000 and Queenstown Lake District with a median of $908,000.

Three regions saw record median prices during June – Waikato (+11.7 per cent to $525,000), Wellington (+12.3 per cent to $595,000) and Marlborough (+11.4 per cent to $440,000). Additionally, regions with strong annual increases included Gisborne (+26.9 per cent to $330,000) and Hawke’s Bay (+15.3 per cent to $430,000).

Sales volumes fell significantly year-on-year on the West Coast (-25.7 per cent) which was the lowest sales count for 14 months, Waikato (-14 per cent) also the lowest sales count for 14 months, Wellington (-10.6 per cent) the lowest number of properties sold for 5 months and Otago (-8.3 per cent) the lowest sales count for 11 months.

hatever happened to the long-gone good old days when a boxer let his fists do the talking instead of the trash spouting out of the mouths of the modern fighters?

It was sad to see a nice guy like boxer Joseph Parker follow the lead of manager David Higgins and coach Kevin Barry engaging in what looked like a terrible B-grade movie leading up to his London heavyweight fight against 18st 6lb brawler Dillion Whyte who, last Sunday, beat him on a unanimous points decision.

or the Love of Sport was the theme of the fundraising event hosted recently by footballer Arzan Todywalla who hopes to take off on a Fusion Tour to the UK in September.

The event Let’s Rock at the Bucklands and Eastern Beaches Memorial Hall had more than 150 people turn up for the evening packed with entertainment.

Most of Arzan’s family and friends, who have been watching him train intensively over the last six years including play for the Birmingham City Club, were there to cheer and encourage the player.

To raise funds for Todywalla’s international tours, the World Zarathushtrian Organisation (WZO) and Zarathustrian Association of New Zealand ( ZANZ) are assisting the family.The Saint Kentigern student is part of the developing football and Futsal junior teams in New Zealand.

In 2017, Todywalla made the Futsal Whites representing the New Zealand team in the FIFA Qualifiers, with the NZ team winning the silver medal.

In 2018 he was part of the New Zealand team which won the championship in Australia. This qualified the team to participate in the World Futsal Cup 2018 in Spain in December 2018.

PURC wins Jubilee Trophy Ponsonby has won its 34th Gallaher Shield for Auckland premier club rugby supremacy.

The 35-23 final victory over old rivals University at Eden Park before a crowd of 2748 was well-deserved and reflected its hunger and ability to strike at key moments.

In all, Ponsonby now has 49 senior championships in its 144year history.

On the back of a Waimana Riedlinger-Kapa double, 20 points by right wing Johnny Cooper and a tigerish display at the breakdown, Ponsonby now have possession of three of the four Auckland premier club trophies. Along with the coveted Gallaher, they also have the Alan McEvoy Memorial Shield and the pre-season Waka Nathan Challenge Cup in the clubrooms of their Western Springs base.
