Cat taped up and left for dead, SPCA investigating By THERESE HENKIN
A
n investigation has been launched to find those responsible for reportedly wrapping a cat in masking tape and leaving it for dead in Whitford. An SPCA spokesperson said the cat was in critical condition when it arrived at the Auckland SPCA last Friday.
“We can confirm that a cat was brought SPCA’s Auckland centre after it was found reportedly wrapped in masking tape three weeks ago,” says the spokesperson. A post on a community Facebook page reported that the tabby cat was found on the side of the road in Whitford. The spokesperson said the finders of the cat have been caring for it for the last three weeks
The SPCA have launched an investigation into what led to a tabby cat being left on the side of a road wrapped in masking tape three weeks ago. Photo supplied
until it was brought to the SPCA for medical treatment. “The cat was examined by SPCA vets who found that it was critically unwell,” she says. “The cat was unable to stand, suffering from likely end-stage renal failure and severe dehydration. It had difficulty breathing and was cyanotic [bluish discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes,
caused by inadequate oxygen levels]. Unfortunately, the SPCA vets had to make the difficult decision to euthanise the cat on humane grounds.” ■ SPCA inspectors would like to hear from anyone with information about this cat leading to the condition in which it was found. Any information can be reported to 256-7300.
