April 18, 2020 is a day Port Waikato couple James and Nykayla Webster, won’t just remember, but will ever wonder how they came through it with so much calm and collectedness. It was the day their daughter, Olivia was born on the side of a country road in the middle of a cold, wet night. Their account of events astounded Rural Living Editor, HELEN PERRY. grab a rug and turn back, our daughter had emerged, the amniotic sac finally bursting as I delivered her just on 1am.

It was an, ‘oh my God’ moment. I just sat there in shock, leaving everything to James who was a rock.

It’s not unusual for first time mothers to find the early stages of labour confusing. Contractions might not be straight forward and niggly pain may seem inconsequential leading to uncertainty about timing departure for the hospital, as Nykayla Webster can attest.

Nevertheless, this young mother’s determination not to act in haste resulted in the kind of experience most mums could never imagine – a roadside birth at 1am in pelting rain, during a national lockdown, with only her husband on hand to assist.

Determined not to panic at the first twinge of discomfort on April 17 – three weeks into the alert level 4, Covid-19 lockdown – Nykayla, dismissed minor stomach cramps, turned over, and went back to sleep.

“As the cramping increased, I dozed on and off but by morning I decided I must be in the early stages of labour.

James and I had done a condensed ante natal course and the midwife had visited regularly. We knew it could take 10 to12 hours before I would be ready to deliver especially as this was my first.”

By 11am on the 17th, Nykayla says her contractions had increased but were very erratic.

“Our midwife advised ringing her when they were about five minutes apart and then to head for the Pukekohe Birthing Unit. But mine were all over the place – 10 minutes, three minutes, seven minutes, 10 minutes – there was no consistency.”

As her pain increased, Nykayla rang James late afternoon. An essential worker at Hellers in Wiri he headed straight home, arriving shortly before 6pm.

“I told him things were getting urgent but because the contractions still weren’t regular, and my waters hadn’t broken, we thought we should wait even though I wasn’t coping so well with the pain.”

At 11pm, Nykayla decided she couldn’t wait a moment longer. I actually felt as though I wanted to push but James kept urging me to hold on. Finally, just after midnight, I rang the midwife and she said we should head for Pukekohe for a check but at that stage no one was panicking except me…just a little bit.”

With the amniotic sac still intact, the birth wasn’t considered to be imminent but Nykayla says she could hardly get herself into the car – “it took me 20 minutes” – and when she finally did manage it she just wanted to get out again.

“We got as far as the boat ramp, about two kilometres from home, when I desperately needed the bathroom.

James encouraged me to hang on but I said I couldn’t. I managed to get out of the car and as I squatted on the grass verge, in the freezing cold and rain, I realised the baby’s head was crowning.

“I shouted at James that the baby was coming but by time he’d managed to

“At the antenatal classes he’d vowed not to be at the ‘business end’ during the birth – he’s not very good with blood and the likes – but when it came to the crunch he checked the cord wasn’t around her neck, cleared the fluid from her face and made sure she was breathing before wrapping her in the rug and getting us back in the car.

Something from the ante natal classes had absolutely sunk in.”

In a daze, Nykayla remembers James ringing the midwife who said she was on her way and for the couple to return home.

“At that stage we hadn’t cut the cord and I hadn’t delivered the placenta.

Fortunately, James’ parents live just two minutes from us and they raced around in support. The midwife arrived within 30 minutes and she took care of everything from there.

“At that stage we were both ecstatic that we had a beautiful baby girl, who we soon learned weighed 7lbs 8 oz (3.5kilograms) and was well and healthy.”

Comfortable in her own home, and with family support, Nykayla says there was no need to go to the birthing unit and, now, two weeks later, baby Olivia is thriving.

“She eats and sleeps well. I’m breastfeeding and, usually, I only have to get up once in the night between 11pm and 8am to feed. Olivia’s been a remarkably easy baby when you consider her eventful birth – but I admit, I won’t be thinking about another one for quite a while!”

The challenges of Covid-19 have been innumerable and ongoing difficulties will remain painful for many but the pandemic has also seen communities connect in new ways. Most importantly, new babies have brought joy and celebration. HELEN PERRY asked the Midwife Manager at Pukekohe Birthing Unit about the hospital’s first four weeks in lockdown.

Lynn Austerberry strikes me as the last person to be rattled by a crisis and, after a 50-minute phone chat, I’m convinced it would take much more than the Covid-19 pandemic to put her off stride when it comes to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of her team and the mothers and babies they care for.

In fact, Pukekohe Birthing Unit’s, Midwife Manager, says despite all the potential problems that could have resulted from Covid-19, the hospital has remained quiet, calm and something of a haven for many new mothers.

“We had 24 births from the time of lockdown to the end of the fourth week without complications,” Lynn says. “We also had all the PPE (personal protective equipment) we needed to ensure the onsite team and our community LMCs (lead maternity carers) were all catered for.”

Although the hospital midwives come under Counties Manukau District Health Board, the LMCs are technically self-employed. However, Lynn says the midwives, as a whole, consider themselves a combined team and have the highest regard for each other.

Although many mothers return home relatively quickly, Lynn says others stay several days and during the past few weeks some of those remaining have remarked on the welcome quiet resulting from the absence of visitors.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way everyone has worked and performed during alert level four and have no doubt both groups will continue in the same manner required of them by each alert level.”

With plans firmly in place to cope with any diagnosis of the virus in a staff member or a woman, Lynn says everyone remains well and, despite the strict precautions in place, the unit is operating as it should with every birth reason to rejoice.

“While every birth is a joy, those mums who have birthed here during the lockdown have been particularly thankful for the support they have received. They have so appreciated that their labour and birth could go ahead normally despite the pandemic.”

“Partners and support partners have been allowed for the labour and birth but, thereafter, no hospital visitors have been permitted. Fortunately, families have stayed connected through face time and zoom conversations so valuable family support hasn’t been lost. On the other hand, mums have had a little more space to bond with baby.”

Although Lynn doesn’t expect too much to change at the unit yet, she says everyone is prepared should, and when, alert level two comes into effect.

“We have two birthing rooms and eight beds staffed by 18 hospital midwives and two nurses plus 17 community LMCs and two community DHB midwives all working for the good of the community. We couldn’t do our job without the support of administration clerks, cleaners, kitchen and other ancillary staff,” Lynn says. “Everyone is doing their level best to keep Covid-19 pressures at bay and to ensure all goes to plan for mothers and their babies.”

BACK TO SCHOOL FOR THE CHOSEN FEW

It was more of a dribble than a deluge as the numbers of children returning to their desks in the region’s primary schools got off to a slow start.

The same number of students are present at Buckland School and they are being taught in one bubble says principal Mavis Glasgow.

Some 12 children are being taught in two bubbles at Bombay Primary School.

Rural Living touched base with several Franklin schools on the first day back last Wednesday. Parents returning to work, and who have no other adult in their bubble to care for their children, can send them to school under Covid-19 level 3 conditions.

Both Pukekohe Hill and Waiuku primary schools declined to say how many children have returned.

Busiest of the primary schools we contacted was Puni with principal Hayden Brill reporting 25 attendees across years 1-6. “We have some large family groups and we have put all siblings in one bubble,” he says.

“We have four bubbles and are expecting more children next week.”

Mr Brill says Puni may have one of the highest attendances of schools in the area representing 12% of the school’s 240 roll.

At Paerata Primary School, principal Luke Thompson, assisted by one other teacher, is taking care of the needs of four students who make up one mixed bubble. He’s also expecting numbers to go up as more people return to work.

All schools reported that they were well stocked with hand sanitiser to help keep germs at bay. Most of them had already purchased their own supplies before the Government announced it would be distributing 100,000 bottles of hand sanitiser to schools and early childhood centres.

The Franklin schools say they were expecting a delivery either on Wednesday of Thursday last week. The Ministry of Education has purchased 50,000 bottles of hand sanitiser at cost price from east Auckland firm NXP. The company donated a further 50,000 bottles to ensure all New Zealand schools and child care centres have sufficient initial supplies for when they reopened.

With so much focus on the pandemic, other disasters seem to have taken a backseat of late. However, the bushfires that ravaged Australia last summer are still making their presence felt in the form of a plume of smoke which continues to circle the globe.

‘GREEN’MEANS GO! Bright sparks worldwide have been firing on all cylinders (or should that be synapses?) as they race to produce a new generation of more environmentally-friendly vehicles.

“The fires were so energetic they injected smoke and carbon aerosol into the stratosphere,” atmospheric scientist, Dr Richard Querel, from NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research) confirms. “This soot absorbed sunlight, heating the smoke cloud as it rose and crossed the Pacific.”

The brainchild of French-based Newron (as opposed to neuron) Motors, the new EV-1 Electric Motorcycle not only features an electric motor but also striking timber bodywork. Unlike New Zealand’s own EV motorcycle, Ubco’s famous electric farm bike, the EV-1 is better suited to the open road than down on the farm, reaching a top speed just under 220kph.

Orders are now being taken (via newronmotors.com) for the EV-1, but with a price tag of more than $NZ 100,000, riders will need to part with more than just a little ‘green’ should they wish to be among the first to take this treemendous bike for a spin.

The bushfires caused an ‘unprecedented stratospheric ozone loss’ in the smoke cloud, but a spike in carbon monoxide levels in the stratosphere has converted to carbon dioxide and would not be significant for the climate, Dr Querel adds.

“The important thing about these carbon monoxide readings is that they show just how large these fires were.”

Although it has since has stretched and thinned, the main bulk of the plume was

about five kilometres high and hundreds of kilometres wide. Fortunately, unlike the fires themselves (which killed more than 30 people directly, with hundreds more dying from the effects of smoke inhalation), the smoke plume is not endangering human life. At least not right now.

HANKERING FOR THE A week into alert level 3 and life in our household hasn’t changed too much. Not being huge on takeaways in general, I haven’t rushed out for a burger or fries but I couldn’t wait to order something more restaurant style from Logan’s Catering – lamb shanks, first up and, at $20, great value.

Next on the list is Thai and Indian although I am hanging out for a real restaurant fix. I love eating out – I like the buzz of people around me and the idea of no cooking, no mess, no dishes, just kicking back and being served is my kind of treat and regularly at that.

I’m also waiting on the day our local clubs can re-open. Friday night at The Franklin Club with friends is a regular date on our calendar – predinner drinks then a meal in the newly revamped Franklins restaurant is something our large group enjoys…. and misses. Here’s to the day the club, and others like it, (e.g. Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Cub) can welcome us all back.

That aside, such a lot has happened in the past week or so – we all witnessed a very different Anzac Day and I loved that from the top of our driveway the first thing I heard at 6am was the eerie call of the pipes – our local piper sent shivers down my spine.

This was followed by someone broadcasting loud the dawn Anzac service with The Last Post setting the tone. We even sang the national anthem before heading for our deck to watch the sunrise.

Last week schools welcomed back students (see story page 4) however, many parents were, and still are, diffident about their youngsters taking that step. It may be one or two more weeks before we see more normality there.

But the big problem with level three (as I see it) is that it has made many of us itch for level two – we know staying in our bubble is the right thing to do but the prospect of a country drive, reuniting

good times properly with family and more social time seems tantalisingly close.

The fact that so many have taken every opportunity to grab their favourite coffee from now operating cafes speaks volumes – yes, it’s all about a great caffeine fix but I think the idea of sitting in the sunshine, yarning with a friend – or browsing magazines such as Rural Living or SOUTH – while we savour the taste, is so tempting. Ah well, as I’ve said before, it’s all a waiting game and wait we must.

However, in Waiuku township shops mostly remain closed for business despite more people coming in search of takeaways or café-brewed coffee.

KEEPING ‘PANTRY’ STOCKED AND OPEN

Most people would say shops able to remain open during the lockdown have been the lucky ones. Financially this may well be true, but HELEN PERRY discovered that the pressure and stress of operating in a locked down world can also take an enormous toll.

Wayne and Melanie Kennerley are well known Karaka residents and business people. Their popular seven-day grocery store, Paddock to Pantry, on the corner of Linwood and Blackridge Roads, has remained open throughout the alert level 4 lockdown.

‘Wonderful’, most would say. But five minutes talking to Melanie and the enormous strain of keeping the store open and running efficiently, is evident – she breaks down in tears as she recounts the highs and lows, the frustrations, exhaustion and emotional toll of trying to do their best to serve the local community.

She talks about the long 12-hour days – every day – in which she walks at least 10 km daily just within the confines of the store, answers the phone every few minutes, tries to coordinate the difficult continuity of supplies, takes orders, personally delivers to the vulnerable, deals with further contactless orders picked up from the store and ensures the rules of operating in level 4 (and now level 3) are adhered to.

“We wear uncomfortable masks all day long which quickly leave us breathless and we go to great lengths to keep maintaining strict hygiene standards; it’s hard but the safety of customers and our staff is our priority.”

Then there’s the matter of stock.

Melanie says many items are in short supply.

“Everyone’s heard about the rush for

toilet paper, but flour, yeast and baking powder are like gold; still so hard to get. Often I’ll order something which is promised for the following day but it doesn’t arrive for three days or even a week later, or it just doesn’t arrive at all.

“We’ve also had to deal with several police visits. Even though Wayne was careful, from the first, to ensure all paperwork was in place, working through their checks, was stressful.

It has seemed, at times, as if the rules were changing daily. In fact, it was a moment of celebration when MBIE finally established we had the same authority to operate as bigger supermarkets.”

Another demand Melanie cannot avoid are the phone calls. “The phone rings incessantly. People ask, have we this, that or the other thing; the same requests are constant but the calls I have most come to dread are those that ask, “Are you open?’ Yes, we are!”

Ensuring she has ‘crossed every t and dotted every i’ means there’s no sitting quietly out back attending to orders or balancing the books. Melanie’s time is never idle and, business aside, there’s also the no small matter of schooling four children at home including an international student who the family took in as lockdown happened and their eldest who was at university but got home at the last minute.

“I often leave the house when it is still dark and that has meant not really knowing where the 10-year-old is at

with her studies – thank goodness Wayne and the older children can help out but Wayne also has to oversee his main focus which is our Z Service Stations which, likewise, continued to operate during level 4, a logistical challenge in itself.”

Hearing the exhaustion (and tears) in her voice it is clear that remaining open during the lockdown is no walk in the park but Melanie says the highlights and many positive comments lift her spirits.

“When Totara Hospice told us they were desperate for milk and fruit we were so pleased we could help.

We’ve also managed to assist the local food bank and some special welfare requests, too. People feel indebted but we are just happy we can help; there are so many doing it hard out there.”

Paddock to Pantry customers have also sent messages of gratitude. Melanie says, “at the till, it’s so nice that people have gone out of their way to say, ‘thank you for being open’.

“Many have expressed thanks that they don’t have to battle long supermarket queues and others who are fearful of exposure to the virus are relieved they don’t have to visit a big supermarket.

“They seem so glad they can call in here or have an order filled and delivered by me. It’s become very personal and heart-warming. On the other hand, I will be very grateful when restrictions can be eased and things return to normal.”

COMING UP Mother’ Day bouquets for that special woman seemed highly unlikely a week ago.

But, with the advent of alert level 3 on April 28, everything changed.

Wayne and Melanie Kennerley, who also own The Wild Rose in Papakura, agree it was the best possible news for florists and growers.

“We launched this store seven months ago and having to close down in March was a big blow,” Wayne says. “I’m especially thankful we can help out local growers who have the chance to make a return for all their hard effort.

“Not only do we deliver to the domestic market, many of our corporate clients have standing orders for reception areas and board rooms. The lockdown meant those orders came to a halt and, of course, we had to close our doors so we couldn’t deliver anyway.

“Sadly, people wanting birthday or special occasion flowers, such as for funerals, were disappointed because even contactless deliveries were seen as non-essential until last week.”

But happily florists and growers are now back to business which means Mother’s Day is back on The Wild Rose calendar.

“I’m delighted we will be able to fulfill the call for flowers, including beautiful bouquets” Wayne says.

“These are always such a big part of Mother’s Day and it just wouldn’t be the same without them. After that, we hope it will be business as usual every day.”

FLIGHT HOME big hurdle for young equestrian A mad, six-hour dash from southern Holland to Amsterdam to catch one of the last flights out of The Netherlands to New Zealand hit the pocket and also the new equestrian career Pukekawa teenager, Brayden Aarts, had embarked on five months earlier. He told HELEN PERRY Covid-19 had turned life upside down.

As the effect Covid-19 was having on the world started to hit home, 17 year old Brayden Aarts had just 15 minutes to choose between staying in Holland or returning to New Zealand.

“Mum initially rang early in March to say I should start thinking about whether to stay or go. My visa had just been extended and I was fully engaged with the riding and training work I was putting in at the Springstal Van de Vluten stables in Someren. At that stage, everyone there thought the virus would be all over within a few weeks.”

However, when Brayden’s mother, Alanna Aarts rang again at 10.30pm a few nights later to say New Zealand was preparing to cancel inbound flights and to close borders, Brayden realised returning home might soon become impossible in the short term.

“My new visa was valid for only another three months and I thought, what then?” he recalls.

It was all a bit of a shock especially when my colleagues thought I was crazy; they were sure things would come right in no time.”

“On my initial stay I was assigned very junior responsibilities but on returning there in October my role stepped up and I was riding a number of younger, upcoming horses as part of their early training – and mine, too! The experience has been invaluable.”

Departing in haste meant leaving behind his horse, Aztec Ventura, which Brayden had taken to Someren , but he says, “thankfully she is being well cared for.”

Brayden was also competing, riding a variety of mounts from the stables, including his own, at shows around the country.

“I was supposed to take over my more experienced mount, a grey called, L.T Holst Aunty Annette (Annie for short) but she had a minor injury just before I left home in October so I took my younger bay instead.

“It wasn’t really been about winning, more about training,” says this promising young equestrian.

“Now I have neither horse here because Annie is stuck in Christchurch where she had been sent for breeding purposes.”

Although coming home has put his career plans temporarily on hold, Brayden says when it’s safe to travel he will return to The Netherlands.

Deciding it was wise to check for flights, Alanna contacted an agent who managed to secure a seat on a flight from Amsterdam to New Zealand via Singapore, the last before Singapore’s borders were closed.

“Its the best country in the world for show jumping and I want to keep up my training and work there. I don’t want to be just a groom at shows; the aim is to compete and be competitive.”

“I learnt such a lot and everyone treated me as an equal. I don’t want to waste that training and the rare experience I have been given. I definitely want to go back and keep advancing.”

Despite Covid-19 affecting most of the world, coming home hasn’t been entirely easy.

“Firstly, I was in self isolation for 14 days and during that time New Zealand went into full lockdown,” Brayden explains.

“I don’t have either of my horses here and although I can do bits and pieces of work in the family business, I’d like to get back to learning and earning properly.

At this stage, the stables in Someren are my future; I’m looking forward to going back.”

“Mum initially rang early in March to say I should start thinking about whether to stay or go. My visa had just been extended and I was fully engaged with the riding and training work I was putting in at the Springstal Van de Vluten stables in Someren. At that stage, everyone there thought the virus would be all over within a few weeks.”

TO ‘DAMNING’ RESPONSE ADE ‘DAMNING’ DOWNGR Minister of Agriculture, Damien O’Connor, has slammed a recent report by Advocacy group World Animal Protection urging the Government to ‘outlaw cruel practices still occurring to animals’. New Zealand was also downgraded on the organisation’s Animal Protection Index.

“To be perfectly frank, I think this report is a bit of a joke; I don’t find it credible,” he advised Rural Living. “I reject any suggestion that New Zealand doesn’t take animal welfare seriously.”

World Animal Protection’s report offers numerous recommendations to our Government concerning animal welfare, including:

FARMERS GROW CONNECTIONS ONLINE Farming is no office job. However, during the Covid-19 lockdown, DairyNZ is advocating farmers spend at least a little time driving desks rather than tractors.

“We’re keen to ensure our farmers are able to catch-up to talk about their activities and current priorities,” Sharon Morrell from DairyNZ says regarding the organisation’s online discussion groups. “[These allow] farmers to take part but stay well within their own ‘bubble’.”

Designed to ensure farmers continue to share ideas about how to operate during the lockdown while providing mutual support, the group talks can provide the opportunity for participants to take a break from hands-on work but they are also accessible to those with their hands full.

“We even had someone the other day who tuned in while he was working in the milking shed,” she confirms. “The farmer put his phone on silent for most of it and was able to take part as if he’d been at a meeting in person.”

Sessions are held on a regional basis and run for 60 to 90 minutes, although people can attend for as long as is practical. Experts from various primary sector organisations are also taking part.

“[New Zealand is] strongly encouraged to ban all piglet mutilations conducted without anaesthesia, and to outlaw farrowing crates altogether. Furthermore, the live export of animals should be fully banned due to the cruel conditions experienced by the animals during the transport process and often inhumane slaughter at their destination, the report states.”

The report even criticises legislation for continuing to “refer to animals as ‘it’ rather than by their genders, and thus still imply that animals are inanimate objects, rather than living beings.”

New Zealand’s downgrade on the group’s index sees it drop from an A rating, awarded in 2014, to a C; just six of the 50 countries listed on the latest index have B ratings with none granted an A. “All countries that were previously rated A have been downgraded. The grading is very subjective, and it’s unclear how it’s used to measure countries in a uniform manner,” Mr O’Connor says. “The Government is committed to improving animal welfare... the vast majority of farmers care deeply about their animals and do their utmost to ensure that they are cared for and kept healthy.”

While Mr O’Connor may challenge the report’s findings, they are being taken seriously by some.

“It’s a fantastic way for farmers to engage with others, to ask their questions and to share challenges, insights and advice,” Ms Morrell adds. “We strongly encourage farmers to get involved.”

“We’re not surprised New Zealand has been downgraded.

[Its] track record is appalling,” Debra Ashton from SAFE (Save Animals from Exploitation) says. “The Animal Welfare Act recognises animals are sentient, yet we still keep hens and pigs in barren cages. So-called rodeo ‘cowboys’ continue to bully animals every summer, and we’re still shipping millions of live animals overseas.”

FEED WHEAT P ON THE UP-AND-U Grassroots efforts could go a long way to speeding New Zealand’s recovery from the COVID-19 lockdown. Despite a raft of challenges over the past year, growers have risen to the occasion, Brian Leadley from Federated Farmers reveals.

“Some caution is needed when comparing the 2020 harvest with 2019 because last year was pretty poor. But when you get results such as a 17.7 percent increase in feed wheat despite a six percent decrease in hectares planted, and a 31 percent increase in harvested milled wheat from only a 13 percent increase in hectares planted, that’s really pleasing,” he says.

“This is despite a severe early season hailstorm, flooding in some regions and some pretty variable weather. It just highlights that our arable farmers are world class.”

Mr Leadley’s comments relate to the recent Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) survey; further findings from the survey are accessible via far.org.nz.

For example, you still need to open doors comfortably. You don’t want a beautiful new bathroom with a door that won’t open properly because the fixtures aren’t right.

Walls and Floors – Decisions here really do come down to budget. Do you want tiles on floors and walls? Do you tile just the floor and then paint new gib or do you tile half way up the wall? The options are endless but knowing budget is the key to making decisions, let us advise you on the best way to make your budget meet your needs.

MAY THE 11TH BE WITH US? Ironically, on May Day 2020 many working people were unable to work but, if the EMA has its way, it won’t be long before businesses that are still in business may open their doors “We’ve already seen a number of businesses going to the wall and a significant jump in the numbers of unemployed – we know that more businesses are certain to fold,” Brett O’Riley from EMA (Employers and Manufacturers Association) says.

“Unless there’s a compelling reason not to, the Government should announce on

May 11 that we are moving immediately from Alert Level 3 to Alert Level 2.”

Although Mr O’Riley agrees that the Government needs to protect the health of New Zealanders, the health of our economy is also a pressing concern.

“The health arguments have rightly and understandably held sway... but it’s time for business to start recovering its health,” he says. “Businesses have complied well with Levels 4 and 3. It’s now time to trust them to continue work within Level 2 guidelines, allowing

the bulk of the economy to get back underway while maintaining the required vigilance under the health guidelines.”

The alternative could well see many more livelihoods at risk, he adds.

“With no sign yet of any cashflow assistance package from the Government we’ll see many more SMEs and some larger companies make the tough decision to close if there is a further extension of Alert Level 3 restrictions.”

NASH BACKS SMES

Larger businesses may be able to retrench to offset profit losses due to the COVID-19 lockdown but many SMEs have little room (financially) to move.

Thankfully, the Government appears to have assistance designed specifically with the needs of small to medium businesses in mind.

The latest addition is the Small Business Cashflow Loan Scheme. “We recognise many businesses have had little or no revenue through Alert Level 4 and Level 3. This scheme is designed to give them access to cashflow to meet fixed costs on concessionary terms,” Minister for Small Business, Stuart Nash, says.

The loans will provide assistance of up to $100,000 to companies with 50 or fewer employees. They will be interest free if paid back within a year or capped at an interest rate of 3% for a maximum term of five years. Repayments are not required for the first two years.

“In the absence of further support from

“I thought, with everyone at home [during the lockdown] we’d still be very busy but it hasn’t worked out that way.”

It may be difficult to predict the weather but a little foresight can ensure we’re not left high and dry.

Investing in more tankers may seem like the solution to heading such shortages off at the pass. However, such a risk is a heavy burden for small to medium businesses to carry.

“People in more rural areas are used to living off tank water so they don’t have as many dramas, they know how to conserve, but those used to having town supply are more likely to waste it.”

In a way, the water shortage has been a self-fulfilling prophesy, Mr Julian suggests.

“People get nervous and book even when they know they might not need [more water]. They see on TV or hear on the radio that there’s a shortage and they think ‘I better get myself on that list!’”

Recently, Auckland Council called time on a scheme employing milk tankers to act as water relay stations to alleviate the pressure on water carriers to meet demand during the drought. Costing $1.4 million, the 11-week scheme was no drop in the bucket. “[Relay] tankers were carting water out to Beachlands,” Mr Jordan confirms. “It

For the first time in more than a 25 years, the water level at Auckland’s dams dropped (in April) below the halfway mark. Despite a recent increase in rainfall, MetService predicts drought conditions will continue for the next few weeks.

Although residents on town water could face mandatory water restrictions if this worrying trend continues, Watercare chief executive Raveen Jaduram says a recent survey confirms Aucklanders recognise the importance of water conservation.

“Current water usage is low enough that we are achieving sufficient

[short term] savings,” he says. “Survey results show Aucklanders... are on board with what needs to be done.

But now is the time for us all to tighten our belts.”

In light of Covid-19, he emphasises that water conservation should not be achieved by compromising hygiene and, consequently, health.

“We are very aware of the demands everyone is facing and we do not want to add to these. We also acknowledge that it’s not possible to enforce restrictions while meeting physical distancing requirements,” says Mr Jadurum, who encourages

everyone to keep washing their hands, but not to wash cars, water blast houses or hose lawns.”

Watercare may have other solutions in the ‘pipeline’ but, for now, every little drop of effort helps.

“For most households, the shower guzzles the most water – around 27 per cent of total use. While it uses a lot of water if left unchecked, it’s also an easy place where all of us can make a big contribution to yearround water savings,” Mr Jaduram explains. “If people cut back to four minutes [in the shower] the region will save some 80 million litres a day.”

Frailty is a condition most people hope won’t afflict them too early in life.

However, health researchers are urging people from the tender age of 40 to build physical and mental health to reduce, or even avoid, ‘frailty’ and higher mortality risk down the track.

With all eyes on avoiding major illness in this Covid-19 year, a new study published online in BMC Geriatrics is, perhaps a timely warning. It found ‘prefrailty’ occurs in 45% of people aged 4049, which is about the same percentage of people aged 70-75.

From the age of 40, or even younger, people in ‘pre-frailty’ stages have the chance to avoid poor health outcomes and frailty, Flinders University Caring Futures Institute and international colleagues found.

“You don’t have to be in your 70s or 80s to be heading down the path to frailty. Age doesn’t matter,” says Flinders University Strategic Professor Sue

The report suggests people can take matters in their own hands by improving a range of things, including: Pre-frailty indicators – poor dynamic trunk stability and lower limb strength, poor balance, poor foot sensation, being underweight, pelvic floor problems, and poor nutrition.

Pre-frailty to frailty factors – poor mental state i.e. living alone, high psychological distress, poor lung function and poor sleep quality.

In these pandemic times when people want their immunity to be at its best, sleep, regular exercise, vitamin D and a balanced diet will help.

Extra top-ups such as vitamin C, zinc and echinacea can also play a role but another superfood trending for their immunity-boosting properties are blackcurrants.

Canterbury-grown blackcurrants are the clever fruits behind CurraNZ, a natural sports and health superfood supplement which contain generous handful of New Zealand blackcurrants.

Their immunity-boosting quality is due to them containing high levels of anthocyanins, which enhance immune responses, help to control and suppress inflammation in the body and help with repair too.

Newly-released studies carried out by the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research found that taking New Zealand blackcurrant extract boosted innate immune defences and demonstrated impressive antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties.

The study stated: “Daily consumption of blackcurrant extract for five weeks enhanced the expression of immune factors associated with the maintenance of innate immune defences and enhanced cellular anti-inflammatory/antioxidant properties.”

Industry spokesperson, Mike Callagher said the importance of anthocyanins in terms of maintaining good health was only just starting to be understood.

“Anthocyanins are a type of polyphenol. They’re found in other fruits and vegetables but not as high in potency as New Zealand blackcurrants. They act as strong antioxidants in the body, protecting cells from damage and reducing inflammation. “

VEGGIE MOUSSAKA WITH TILDA RICE

Why go against the ‘grain’? Thanks to recipes such as this one, from Tilda rice, we can all spice up our lives.

INGREDIENTS • 2 packs Tilda Pure Basmati • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 red onions, peeled and finely chopped • 2 cloves garlic • 2 tsp dried oregano • 1 tsp allspice • 250ml vegetable stock • 1 can chickpeas, drained • 1 can black eyed beans, drained • 2 cans chopped tomatoes • 4 large aubergines • 600ml milk • 50g spelt or plain flour • 50g butter • 75g feta cheese, crumbled • 25g parmesan • 2 egg yolks • Salt and pepper to season

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180degC/gas 4.

Heat the oil in a large pan and add the onions, garlic, oregano and allspice and fry on a medium heat for 6-8 minutes until softened.

Add the stock, chickpeas, black eyed beans and the tomatoes. Season with plenty of salt and pepper, bring to the

boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the rice.

Meanwhile, slice the aubergine into 1cm rounds. Place in a colander and sprinkle with a pinch salt, set aside for 15 minutes to drain. Rinse the aubergine in cold water and pat dry with kitchen paper then spread onto a large roasting tray. Drizzle with oil season and roast for 20 minutes until browned and cooked through.

Warm the milk in a pan over a low heat.

Once warm transfer into a jug, then return the pan to the heat, add the butter and allow to melt on a medium heat. Stir in the flour to form a paste.

Start adding the warmed milk a little at a time stirring well. Once all the milk has been added and the sauce is smooth and creamy add the feta, simmer for five minutes. Allow to cool slightly then whisk in the egg yolks.

Assemble the moussaka by spooning a layer of the chickpea mixture into a large oven proof dish, followed by a layer of aubergine, repeat twice then cover with the cheese sauce. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and bake for 35-40 minutes.

With satsumas available at supermarkets and veggie shops now, these easy-to-prepare recipes (courtesy of T&G and In Rhi’s Pantry inrhispantry.com) will ensure this delicious fruit shines to its fullest.

SUNSHINE SALAD

SAT-MOOTHIE

SPARKLING SATSUMA

Whisk the zest and juice of one lime, a teaspoon of honey and one and a 1/2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a small bowl. Add two tablespoons of freshly chopped mint leaves and two tablespoons of freshly chopped coriander.

Peel four satsumas and remove excess pith in the middle and around the outside. Put the segments into a smoothie/ blender cup and add in 1/2 a cup of ice, 1/4 cup of yoghurt or almond milk and a tiny dash of sea salt.

Peel and remove the pulp from 6 - 10 satsumas, two small grapefruits and a lemon, combine everything together and juice. Add a handful of mint leaves to the bottom of a glass along with a drizzle of maple syrup and a small splash of the juice.

Peel eight satsumas and slice each segment in half. Add sliced satsumas into the mixing bowl to create a zesty citrus salad dressing.

Add chunks of frozen banana, a drizzle of honey or a drop of vanilla extract to sweeten further. Blend until smooth and serve.

Muddle the mint leaves until they are bruised and fragrant.

Next, pour approximately 3/4 of a cup of the juice into a glass, accompanied by 2-4 tablespoons of soda water or sparking water, add ice as needed.

BOOST HEALTH with autumn fruits Autumn has taken hold and as the mornings become cooler, changing up breakfast routines with the addition of new season fresh fruits will boost nutritional needs.

With many folk having indulged in high sugar baking treats during the Covid-19 lockdown, the team at 5+ A Day is urging Kiwis to incorporate more fresh fruit and vegetables into diets because they are not getting enough.

While still providing a sweet touch to meals, fruit and veggies can also help increase immunity and deliver big health benefits.

Paula Dudley, general manager of 5+ A Day Charitable Trust says fresh fruit and vegetables are the best source of nutrition throughout the year but research shows Kiwis are just not getting enough.

Recent Ministry of Health data shows only 53 per cent of New Zealanders

are consuming the recommended daily intake of vegetables and just 51.5 per cent are eating enough fruit.

As freedom of movement increases, the variety of fresh, nutritious produce will also increase in stores and online. So, get creative, try serving up autumn favourites in new ways – poached pears are delicious sliced or diced and eaten with a dollop of yoghurt and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Two feijoas will provide almost two thirds of daily vitamin C needs while a mandarin will help check that particular box for the entire day and will boost immunity, too. Mandarins are also a good source of folate and thiamin (vitamin B1) which plays a key role in energy metabolism.

Trusty apples are full of hearthealthy nutrients including the peel containing polyphenols which have antioxidant effects – it’s best to leave the skin on.

“There are countless ways to incorporate fresh fruit and vegetables into your breakfast routine,” Ms Dudley says. “So, look beyond a loaf of bread or cereal packet and give seasonal fruits a try!”

COFFEE TO GO! As Alert Level 3 came into effect last week, locals went out in search of their favourite caffeine kick, a fast food fix or, in many cases, an upmarket meal. Several venues saw a flurry of customers with the likes of Blue Ox Babe in Manukau Road setting up a tent opposite the restaurant from where meals could be collected.

First out were those seeking flat whites, cappuccinos and lattes but drive-thrus were also super busy and restaurant quality meals, demanding a higher price, were in demand too. More next week.

GONE TO THE DOGS! Covid-19 lockdown has proved a blessing in disguise for some – namely canine pets! Many are accustomed to being left alone during the day when families are at work and school so, having everyone at home, all day, every day will have been a real treat.

What’s more, after having the family’s company for several weeks, your dog is unlikely to welcome a return to lonely, unexciting days on his or her own.

Worse still, bored dogs can become destructive and get into big trouble

So, here are three easy ways to help relieve dog boredom.

STUFFED KONG, KING TOY When you leave your dog at home give him or her a stuffed kong (hollow, rubber toy) or another tough, interactive toy to keep a doggy mind occupied. Trying stuffing the kong with frozen peanut butter or another treat and set outside when heading out for the day. This simple toy will keep your dog busy mentally and physically for quite some time.

DIGGING BOX FOR BUSY DOGS If you have a canine digger, build your dog a personal digging box in the backyard. Before leaving for work each day bury a selection of toys (and even a treat or two) in the sand or earth and leave for your dog to find.

Some dogs love digging so much this game will keep them entertained for hours.

BY GOLLY, THIS BALL’S JOLLY! Any big ball can be a lot of fun, but a jolly ball (thick, durable, polyethylene ball which doesn’t require air) can keep a dog amused for hours. Many dogs love playing with these all by themselves but, of course, it’s always more interesting when family members join in the fun – more game time with the kids after school, perhaps?

BATTLING LOCAL BUSINESS DELIVERS BLOOMS Two years ago Frans and Suzette van Dorsser, from Blooming Hill Flowers (then Shipherd Nurseries) were featured in Rural Living magazine; their gerbera and rose growing operation, blooming bright. This week HELEN PERRY spoke to the couple about the Covid-19 lockdown and its effect on their business.

A gift of flowers is usually guaranteed to give cheer and this week the team from Puni-based Blooming Hill Flowers delivered almost 600 bouquets of beautiful blooms to medical staff at Middlemore Hospital. This act of kindness has been a Covid-19 bright spot but the flipside is the lockdown’s blow to business.
