“You learn something from leaders all the time. I read a lot and have done since I was a boy,” says Luxon, slowly but surely getting through his sushi.

The point? “Business and politics – there’s a lot of transferrable skills.”

He was 40 when he joined the national airline and became CEO at 41. He really is a highflyer and he’s a problem solver.

When he joined Air NZ, its international division was losing $2 million a week. How’s that for focus.

He was at global consumer goods company Unilever for 18 years, 16 years posted abroad and became CEO in 2008 when he was 37.

Transitioning from international business to politics though is something else surely at such a relatively young age.

And he’s a rookie. The motivation for the conservative Christian has always been there.

“At 48 you get to a point (where you consider your posi-

tion). It’s important that you give back if you have been successful,” Luxon says.

“I do fundamentally believe New Zealand faces these unprecedented challenges.”

As a business leader he has come to appreciate and comprehend much, including the impact of automation, working with Iwi, with mayors and councils, with tourism and property too.

“Economically, socially, environmentally, they’re really the changes that will affect New Zealanders over the next 15-20 years.”

He touches again on the transferability of strategies and such from companies, businesses and industries as very capably bringing a diversity of perspectives to our parliament.

“I’m going in with a broad perspective. Some of these principles are very similar.”

There’s been no shortage of unsolicited observations from all and sundry suggesting he won’t be able to cut the mustard…handle the jandal in Kiwi

vernacular. “Do you think the rigours of the job (in politics) will be too much for you? I’ve been asked that a few times,” says Luxon.

But he reckons what he calls extreme global business has set him up well. One hundred hours a week. Being in Argentina on a Monday and Tuesday then Tokyo and London immediately after. “The work was in multiple time zones – you’re playing 3-D chess,” he says.

Clearly, having highly-skilled crew helps. “I’ve always been a leader of a team of leaders. You get very organised with your time…you’ve also got to manage energy.”

Coping with invasive media, particularly with a family, must be off-putting?

“The reality is our family is incredibly grounded; our children are incredibly independent.

“We do have to think about the civility of politics.”

He refers to Kiwi politicians who know each other well and who will engage in the cutand-thrust in the house compared to a very different style employed abroad, particularly in the US where there is tremendous polarity. “There’s no naiveté however attacks should be around ideas rather than personalities,” says Luxon.

He’s getting right into the new job too with up to nine meetings a week including with the police, Race Relations Commissioner Meng Foon, Abbess Manshin at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Flat Bush, Botany business owners and GETBA (the Greater East Tamaki Business Association), the Multicultural Centre and Indian Business Association.

“They’re pretty special people,” he says.

“I’m getting around seeing people doing amazing things.

“My job is to demonstrate that I understand Botany and that I represent them very well in Wellington.”

He underlines that by saying he doesn’t need the job, but wants to do it.

“It’s not what I do. Who I am is more important.”

hristopher Luxon meets at the Times office at around 12.45pm brandishing an 8-pack of sushi.

He’s not eaten anything since breakfast at around 4.30am.

The option of meeting at a cafe in Howick Village is dismissed (by me) as Luxon, who was only selected as the National Botany candidate for the 2020 election on November 4, is so well-recognised in these parts. And he still lives in Remuera.

He later shares his connection to this very blue district. He attended Cockle Bay Primary, Howick Intermediate and Saint Kentigern College. And he has a brother here and many former Air NZ colleagues.

We adjourn to our satellite office upstairs in Rice’s Mall where we remain undisturbed for an hour.

He politely holds off from even touching the sushi until I suggest he begins eating while I catch up on my note-taking.

The early morning rises are an integral part of his approach to the day, a routine he says he observed well before Air NZ. “I’m an early riser. I scan all the newspapers and 200+ emails a day. I have always needed to be organised,” he says.

“I’d be in the office usually around 7am and would usually be home for dinner at 8 and occasionally there’d be a few hours (working) at night…I like to work to a rhythm.”

It’s a rhythm that’s seen him elevate Air NZ – which has 12,500 employees globally – to one of the most respected brands in the country. It is also one of the most successful airlines in the world.

Luxon says he’s had a fascination for politics since he was 12 and has, for some time, devoted a year to focussing on world leaders. This year it’s Theodore Roosevelt. Before that it was Bobby Kennedy.

“I was attracted to his vision but he had a ruthlessness to his politics.... but he cared deeply about people.”

“Some of the objections are about keeping communities together,” says Judge Thompson. “Other objections are about the names of some electorates and we’ve received suggestions for names that people feel better reflect those areas.”

People can comment on the objections until January 24.

“We’ll be taking all submis-

sions into account before finalising the electorate boundaries and names in April for the 2020 and 2023 elections,” says Judge Thompson.

The proposed Manukau East electorate attracted the most boundary objections - 64 - on community of interest grounds. The main concern is the inclusion of the area around Panmure in Manukau East, separating Panmure from Mt Wellington.

Car show numbers strong

Club registrations for the 2020 Brit & Euro Classic Car Show have reached 60 clubs and 880 member cars in the latest registration update.

With individuals, enthusiast groups and classic bikes added in the chairman of the Auckland Brit & Euro Classic Car Show Committee Rev Dr Richard Waugh said they have reached 1017 participant vehicles. “We are well on our way towards topping last year’s 1071 vehicles.”

Recidivist thief busted Thanks to the efforts of Counties Manukau Police staff, with the help of the Police Eagle Helicopter and Dog Section, officers were able to arrest a recidivist burglar allegedly involved in a number of thefts including car, tool and mail theft.

Between Christmas Eve and January 4, a vehicle was allegedly stolen from a property in Golflands.

The vehicle was spotted two days later in the Whitford area heading towards Beachlands.

The Police Eagle Helicopter observed the vehicle’s driver allegedly dispose of a sack in a vacant plot of land in Whitford, before driving to Beachlands.

This sack was later recovered by a Police Dog Unit and contained a large bundle of mail – up to 200 letters – which was still in bundles from the distribution centre.

The Eagle Helicopter continued to monitor the vehicle which parked at the Beachlands shops. The driver then went into a store and allegedly took an item without paying for it.

He was arrested shortly afterwards and had allegedly been carrying a knife, and items that could be used to break into vehicles.

Police recovered the stolen vehicle, which contained a large amount of stolen tools and items.

The vehicle will now be returned to its owner.

The man faces a number of charges including unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, theft and possessing a knife in a public place and was due to appear in court on Friday.

Fuel tax an unnecessary burden

Two locals named in New Year Honours

The Auckland regional fuel tax should be scrapped to alleviate some of the pain local motorists are feeling at the pump.

A Members’ Bill I’ve put together would repeal this fuel tax and remove the ability for the Government to roll out such taxes across New Zealand.

This tax added 11.5 cents a litre to the cost of petrol and diesel and every year it remains in place $150 million is being taken from motorists’ pockets.

The Government has increased fuel taxes in Auckland by about 25 cents a litre overall, adding to the high cost of living faced by locals.

This Bill would give MPs and the public the chance to properly debate the regional fuel tax’s merits.

The rising cost of living is one of the biggest challenges Kiwis are facing right now.

I hear a lot of feedback from people who are concerned about the rising cost of fuel.

It was revealed this week that Auckland Council underspent its budget on new transport projects by more than $260 million in the first year the regional fuel tax was in place.

The tax was implemented to allow the Council to boost its spending on projects to alleviate the city’s appalling traffic congestion and the revenue it’s collecting is not even being fully spent.

the Council will find an extra $150 million a year if the regional fuel tax is repealed.

The answer is by finding savings in its growing balance sheet, which has seen annual expenses increase by an average of $200 million in each of the past three years.

Despite this, ratepayers aren’t seeing an associated increase in the range or quality of services the Council is delivering.

Some people may even say the level of service delivery has been decreasing since the super-city Auckland Council was formed.

The Prime Minister has said Kiwis are being “fleeced at the pump” and a Commerce Commission study into the retail fuel sector said consumers are paying too much for fuel.

A public poll conducted after the regional fuel tax was introduced found 57 per cent of Aucklanders oppose it.

The regional fuel tax is unfair and unnecessary.

It’s hitting Aucklanders where it hurts and it should be scrapped.

He is also a White Ribbon Ambassador and fundraises for the Cancer Society and the Heart Foundation and has been a Community Panel Member of the Care and Protection Resource Panel for Oranga Tamariki since 2012.

Mr Singh was also invited as a Peace Ambassador to participate in the Asia Pacific Summit 2019 hosted by the Royal Government of Cambodia and co organised by Universal Peace Federation and Civil Society Summit.

His awards include Global Organization of People of Indian Origin Oceania Award of Honour, 2017 and Kiwibank Local Hero of the Year, 2016.

Mr Chan, of Fisher Parade, has been appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to philanthropy and the community.

Mr Singh, of Gracechurch Drive, was awarded the Queen’s Service George Chan Harjit Singh Medal for services to the Indian of dollars’ worth of cash cards to lowcommunity and seniors.

There will be around 1700 children who have registered from Howick Local Board, who can have fun at different stations from Jurassic Land, Tomorrow Land, Now Land, and an Enchanted Fairyland theme.

There will be plenty of carnival games, physical challenges, craft activities and face painting at different stations. A number of characters from Star Wars and Batman will also interact with kids. There will be a Scavenger Hunt around Botany Town Centre for kids to find answers to clues given.

The chairperson Adele White, on behalf of Lorraine Neil, presented a petition containing 89 signatories asking to have permanent cameras installed on The Esplanade, Eastern Beach. The comments of the signatories in the main argued for the need of said cameras as a result of alleged on-going anti-social behaviour and repeated incidents of theft and alcohol-related issues in the area.

The board moved to request the Community Empowerment Unit to consider the petition.

he Times has been overwhelmed by responses to Gaylene Makareth’s petition to make English an official language of New Zealand (December 19).

The tone of most emails received from east Auckland residents was one of general disbelief that English does not hold official status. Many people were of the opinion English should be belatedly recognised, whilst others felt such action would be waste of taxpayers’ money. Several views were expressed that could be considered xenophobic.

One reader wrote in to say they were “astounded to learn that English is no longer classified as an official language in New Zealand.

I recall the Labour Government of the day granting official status to Maori and to Sign languages, but to declassify English which has been the official language since independence is unacceptable”.

Another believes the Treaty of Waitangi “allows English to live alongside Maori and to learn from each other. In my opinion that constitutes that Te Reo and English are official languages (legally)”.

Some people were unhappy with the prominence of Te Reo in modern society. “I am actually quite annoyed at the way

NZ Warbirds at Ardmore will open their hangar doors for a display this year that will thrill and impress, with their stable of WWII fighters but also their growing collection of rare and stunning WWI replica aircraft. Sunday 15 March 2020, NZ Warbirds general manager Trish Reynolds says, “We have changed the airshow date from our traditional Queen’s Birthday timing to a date much earlier and hopefully warmer time of the year.

45-year high for new home consents T

he number of new homes consented reached 37,010 in the year ended November 2019, the highest in a year since the mid-1970s, Stats NZ said on Tuesday.

“For the first time in 45 years, the annual number of new homes consented rose to over 37,000,” construction statistics manager Melissa McKenzie said.

There were 37,919 new homes consented in the year ended September 1974, while the overall record is still 40,025 in the February 1974 year.

The population of New Zealand in

the mid-1970s was around 3 million, compared with about 4.9 million today.

The number of new homes has been generally increasing since late 2011, coming off lows in 2009 and 2011 when fewer than 14,000 new homes were consented annually.

Nationally, 13 per cent more new homes were consented in the November 2019 year compared with a year ago, reaching 14,866 in Auckland, 4176 in Waikato, and 5310 in Canterbury.

We are assured by Andy Parsons and Russel Goldman of the New York Times in an article titled, “Why the bush fires in Australia are so bad”, that “Australia’s bush fires will become more frequent and more intense as climate change worsens.”

It is a “Premium” article – if only it were true.

Andy and Russel’s qualifications are readily available on ‘LinkedIn’ and do not demonstrate any experience of bushfire management or firefighting; let alone a background in ‘climate change’.

However, David Packam is an experienced bushfire expert, scientist and Order of Australia recipient, he works with the Australian Volunteer Fire Service – and he does appear to be qualified. He points to the primary responsibility for such terrible fires as factors other than climate change.

I believe in climate change, but I also believe in David’s analysis – far more than the sensationalist scratchings of Andy, Russel and the NYT. We have two issues here: The first is the disingenuousness or, if not, downright dishonesty of the media creating harmful, sensationalist narratives to sell newspapers.

The second is the disregard of expert advice in favour of social narratives by politicians – ‘our budget cuts aren’t to blame!

Carpark accident

Recently I experienced a fall at the New World supermarket car park in Howick.

I tripped over a judder bar, falling full force onto my face and sustaining injuries to the left side of my face, my knee and my shoulder and also breaking my glasses.

A number of people came to my assistance including two New World employees.

I was dismayed (but not surprised) to see that Auckland Transport has yet again underdelivered, despite record taxes on residents. The Regional Fuel Tax was forced upon us with the promise of significant investment but after collecting over a billion dollars, they’ve held onto $268 million. I agree with Councillor Daniel Newman that this is dishonest.

We’re paying more than ever, yet we continue to battle with unsafe footpaths, congested roads and over-priced public transport.

The silver lining is that they didn’t waste it all on consultants and vanity projects but there’s real issues that need to be addressed with urgency. One of many local examples is the long promised pedestrian bridge on Flat Bush School Road, where students from Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School are left to dodge trucks while Auckland Transport sits on millions of dollars of public money.

In the Howick Local Board area, nearly half of the $5.4m available for local transport projects in the last electoral term was unspent.

Will our newly elected Local Board be able to get Auckland Transport to deliver for us? I hope so, for the sake of us all.

Bring our troops home I do believe it’s time to withdraw our NZ troops from the Middle East, not just Iraq.

It’s a worthless cause to massage the ego of the US, not a war that we should put our men’s lives on the line for! However, if NZ’s leaders are reluctant to withdraw our troops from the Middle East, then those leaders should go as replacements for all those NZ soldiers who have family here at home and would like to opt out of this insane predicament that the USA have put the world into.

Certainly lives are cheap for the sacrifice as long as it’s not yours and I bet all political leaders are of that mindset!

I also believe that it’s time for NZ to pull out from the membership of the UN as it’s just the puppet for the whims and fancies of the Western World, especially the USA. We need more forests Presumably pre-schoolers are taught to clean up their own mess so when you read that industrial nations are pumping

a record 43.1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide into the earth’s atmosphere this year, somewhere between becoming a world leader and politician, the preschool message has been lost.

Similarly one is taught in secondary school biology the importance of the balance of nature, a message reiterated many times over in David Attenborough’s wonderful Planet Earth series.

Unless politicians revisit these vital lessons taught in schools and clean up the mess they have allowed to fester (which amounts to restoring balance of carbon in nature) climate Armageddon is an absolute certainty.

The solution is as plain as the nose on your face. It has been spelled out by scientists. If all nations in cooperation plant or replant forests amounting to the size of Canada in addition to the present ones worldwide to take that carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, the balance of nature will be restored and an accelerating climate will resume some semblance of normality.

As long as we rely on politicians, it’s not going to happen so it will take a major climate catastrophe for the peoples of the earth with a united voice to action the planting of such a forest and the other immediate action we can take and as is highly recommended by scientists to stem global warming is to paint our roofs white to reflect the sun’s heat away and could also serve as a tangible protest by today’s youth sending the message to world leaders to clean up their mess.

Questions for Pakuranga Plaza I was wondering if the Pakuranga management have been in contact with you with regards to releasing a press release on the future of the mall.

The management stated earlier this year (2019) that we would hear through a press release what the future holds for this mall.

We have just a little over a week to new year’s eve and still we haven’t heard what plans management have for this mall.

I know of people that have shopped here since the doors opened over 50 years ago.

These people should be respected for the long patronage but clearly this goes unnoticed as they are not shown any respect whatsoever.

I think it’s disgraceful that management can’t follow through what they keep on telling us what their intentions are for this mall.

How can we trust anyone who is able to make promises they have no intention of keeping?

Pakuranga Plaza has been the heart and soul of this community.

It’s become an old identity people like shopping at Pakuranga as its smaller than Sylvia Park and, as they have shopped at Pakuranga, they know where everything is.

As you get older you don’t want to be walking for miles So you can understand why it’s important for us all to know the outcome of this mall.

People think the owner has lost interest and can’t be bothered.

If that’s the case, maybe they should sell to someone who cares about the future the mall.

We have all had enough – it’s time management man-up or walk away completely.

Funding applications for Southsci now open S

outhSci is now accepting funding applications for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related projects in 2020.

South Auckland schools, universities, community and iwi groups are encouraged to apply.

SouthSci’s aim is to show young people the value of science skills and to highlight career pathways through collaborations with local STEM businesses, researchers and engineers.

It particularly funds innovative projects that give young people more opportunities to experience science and technology through hands-on activities and collaborative research.

Project manager Dr Sarah Morgan says you can apply for up to $20,000.

“This year we’d would love to see projects focus on solid data collection and have a plan in place to use that data to drive meaningful change in your world,” she says.

Previous examples of projects funded by SouthSci have included the design of a water self-sufficient living space for a family home conducted by Willowbank School and monitoring and trapping pests to lift birdlife numbers at Hunua School.

Employment agreements Many people enter the workforce in the New Year. A few actions and precautions can assist to make this sometimes new experience an enjoyable one.

Employers are obliged to make sure that all employees have employment agreements (sometimes referred to as ‘contracts’). If they fail to do so, they can be fined $1000. There is plenty of help for employers (or employees if they want or need to create the document for discussion themselves) to put in place appropriate agreements with their staff. Refer to government website https://eab.business.govt. nz/employmentagreementbuilder/ startscreen/ Some folk may feel that they do not need a contract because they know, or are friends with, the employer, but this charitable thinking goes straight out the window if employment troubles arise. There are a number of rights that New Zealand law requires in every agreement. Refer to website https://www.employment.govt.nz/ starting-employment/rights-andresponsibilities/minimum-rights-ofemployees/ These minimums include annual leave, public holidays, sick leave, bereavement leave, parental leave and rest and meal breaks, plus wages and pay.

The optional details should be documented, to avoid confusion and dispute later.

These can include things like greater allowances various types of

leave, wages higher than the minimum, better overtime rates.

There are rules around “90 day trial period” as they must be identified in the employment agreement and signed by both employer and employee. The new employee trial period only applies to businesses with fewer than twenty employees. Refer to website https://www. employment.govt.nz/star tingemployment/trial-and-probationary-periods/trial-periods/ Now, all of this “formal” stuff may seem intimidating to employees and employers, and perhaps easier to ignore. There are some considerations here. Would you want to work for an employer who breaks the law? What will happen if there is an employment issue later on?

Would a responsible employer want to ensure workers (especially those new to the workforce) are treated right? An employment agreement can be seen rather like insurance – you may not think you need it, until you really do need it!

Steph getting a kick out of being back ■■BY JIM BIRCHALL East Auckland footballer Steph Trowill has returned to field after an injury limited her appearances over the past five seasons.

After getting inconclusive diagnosis from doctors, the source of her long-term injury was finally discovered to be an un-healed broken bone and tendon damage.

Towards the end of 2018, Steph’s ankle was operated on again and after a lay-off, she was back doing what she does best.

After initially gaining selection for the New Zealand Maori Women’s side in 2018, a team that thrashed trans-Tasman rivals Australia Mariya Australian First Nation 5-0, Steph has once again been selected for the Maori XI in 2020, to play Mariya again on January 18, in Auckland.

Steph spent five years in the Botany College first XI, made the New Zealand Secondary Schools team in 2013 and first played national league football for Auckland the same year.

She is looking forward to the challenge on getting on the field,

Mealamu was handed the Sir Barry Curtis Medal in a recent ceremony hosted by Counties Manukau Sport (CMS). He received the award from the former Manukau City mayor Sir Barry Curtis.

CMS chief executive officer Russell Preston said the Sir Barry Curtis medal is bestowed upon the person who has, over a lengthy period of time, demonstrated a raft of qualities, skills and attributes that have not only contributed positively to their sport but to the Counties Manukau region as well.

“The award is held in such high regard that it may not be awarded each year unless the recipient is considered to have achieved the criteria set,” said Preston.

“The inaugural recipient of the Sir Barry Curtis medal was Ruben Wiki. Tonight’s recipient is in a lot of respects very much like Ruben Wiki.

He grew up in South Auckland and, as such, experienced a lot of the hardships that young people in the rest of New Zealand are sheltered
