2 — The Newnan Times-Herald — 2015 Chamber Annual Report

Letter from the 2015 Chair and President/CEO THE NEWNAN-COWETA CHAMBER had an incredible year in 2015, celebrating some significant new awards and

milestones. As always, we couldn’t have achieved such a successful year without the many volunteers, committee chairs, our board of directors, and of course, our members! One of the highlights of the year was our Chamber being named the 2015 National Chamber of the Year by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE). What an exciting time it was when our Chamber’s name was called at ACCE’s Annual Convention on August 12, 2016 in Montreal, Canada! Chamber of the Year is the nation’s only award recognizing the dual role chambers have in leading businesses and communities. Those honored with the Chamber of the Year designation have demonstrated organizational strength and made an impact on key community priorities, such as education, transportation, business development and quality of life. We have long believed that our Newnan-Coweta Chamber is outstanding, and it was incredibly rewarding to see the hard work of all our Chamber members recognized on the national level. We also had a lot of fun in 2015, from our March Madness event at The Newnan Centre to our milestone event in the spring, the 30th Anniversary Golf Classic, our Small Business Awards Celebration in August and our best-ever Winter Wonderland Big Expo in November. Never content to rest on our laurels, we also used 2015 to continue to market Coweta County as “Prosperity’s Front Door” through our popular branding campaign. In December, we were pleased to share Coweta’s growing reputation as a healthcare destination through the launch of an updated Healthcare Annual Report. As we look ahead to 2016, we’re proud of what our Chamber has accomplished and look forward to even greater achievements ahead.

2015 Chamber Annual Report — The Newnan Times-Herald — 3

Letter from the 2016 Chairman of the Board DEAR CHAMBER MEMBERS, I am so pleased to begin my year of serving as your 2016 Chair of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber. I look forward to working with all of you as the Chamber continues its mission of championing economic prosperity for its members and all of Coweta County. My job will be much easier thanks to the work of 2015 Chair Danny Beck. His efforts—along with those of the Chamber board, committee chairs and our outstanding Chamber staff—resulted in some incredible accomplishments last year, not least of which was our Chamber’s winning the National Chamber of the Year Award! As a result of these efforts, the Chamber now boasts almost 950 members and continues to be among the most respected and influential Chambers in the nation. We will continue the effort to educate, advocate and assure that Coweta County remains “Prosperity’s Front Door.” Some exciting things are planned for 2016. We have several new strategies in place to make sure Coweta County is the most Tony Ferguson business-friendly community possible, and we will be collaborating with public and private stakeholders to make this happen. We’ll continue our successful Prosperity’s Front Door branding campaign to market Coweta County. And new to the Chamber this year, we’re partnering with the German American Chamber to integrate the Work-based Apprenticeship Model into our Coweta culture. As always, we’ll be providing lots of great networking opportunities to allow members to connect with each other and grow their businesses. We’ll offer signature events as well as monthly and quarterly networking opportunities. Through our marketing efforts, we’ll be communicating the Chamber’s impact and value to both internal and external audiences. And of course we want to continue to be good stewards of the Chamber’s resources. We’ll be finalizing and implementing a tiered dues program to help us operate in an efficient and financially sustainable manner while also giving members the best return on investment possible. We’ll invest in our staff by providing professional development opportunities, and we’re also going to use new performance metrics within all divisions of the Chamber to help track our performance throughout the year. It’s going to be a great year at the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, and I look forward to joining you as, together, we work to make Coweta County an even better place to live, work and raise a family.

ADVOCACY DIVISION Chamber releases new Healthcare Annual Report

Coweta County Safety Council focuses on workplace safety

ONE OF THE KEY AREAS of concentration for the Advocacy Division in 2015 was the continued effort to promote Coweta County’s unique role as a healthcare destination. Through our marketing initiative, we disseminated information about the increase of hospitals, clinics and specialty health services in Newnan. Following the marketing recommendations several years ago in the special report “Coweta County: Healthcare Center of Excellence,” our 2015 initiatives included the release of a Healthcare Progress Report that was shared with recruiters and realtors to use as a tool in promoting this area. The new report was launched in November at a reception at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Newnan. The digital version of the Chamber’s new Healthcare Annual Report can be accessed at CowetaHealthcareAnnualReport2015. The Chamber also continued to provide funding for local nursing students to take the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam. The

THE ADVOCACY DIVISION supported Coweta’s industrial and general business by continuing its Industry Benchmarking Initiative series, which focuses on two increasingly important areas of business: human resources and job safety. Experienced local business people helped launch the program by sharing how they overcame challenges in successfully recruiting professional, technical and hourly staff in both start-up and expansion projects. As a result of this initiative, the Coweta County Safety Council was formed to provide guidance and training to businesses in Coweta County. This council is comprised of safety professionals who desire to share their collective knowledge to help local industry comply with OSHA regulations and ultimately keep the Coweta County workforce healthy and safe. The Safety Council believes that it takes the combined efforts of local companies and community resources to effectively promote safe work practices. In 2015, the Safety Council featured monthly programs ranging from emergency preparedness to ergonomics and hot weather safety. For more information on the Coweta County Safety Council, email info@

CNA designation is increasingly a requirement for those entering a Registered Nurse (RN) program at the college and university level, and covering the CNA exam fee is one way The Chamber is helping ensure the availability of qualified medical professionals in Coweta County.

Signature Events Draw New Members, Create Connections MEETING NEW PEOPLE face to face is one of the most valuable aspects of Chamber membership. In 2015, many of our members took advantage of these great networking opportunities through committee involvement and attendance at our signature events. These events are designed to create connections, and often the networking results in leads generation. In 2015, The Chamber facilitated these connections through five signature events: the Annual Meeting, March Madness, the 30th Anniversary Golf Classic, the Small Business Showcase and Awards Celebration, and the Winter Wonderland Big Expo. Ribbon cuttings, Business-AfterHours networking events, NuLink Early Bird Forums, the Coffee Call Business Card Exchange, Power Networking Lunches and other meetings created even more opportunities for meeting new people and prospective customers.

March Madness and the Golf Classic were just two of the signature events where our Chamber members got to make new connections in 2015.

Chamber Members Have Access to Great Educational Opportunities

THE TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT ARM of The Chamber, Chamber University features strategic business-building educational programming for businesses at every phase of development. This training provides Chamber members with the tools needed to meet the ever-changing demands of the workplace. 8 — The Newnan Times-Herald — 2015 Chamber Annual Report

Chamber continues ‘Prosperity’s Front Door’ community branding campaign HOW A COMMUNITY chooses to market itself is a key decision, and since 2011, The Chamber has been using the marketing and branding theme of “Prosperity’s Front Door.” The “construction” of a doorway to prosperity was a group effort of community leaders in business, education and government, guided by the accomplished Great Southern Publishers of St. Simons Island, Georgia. Researching the community, its history and the perception of its people, Great Southern and The Chamber conceived of Coweta being a portal to a better, more prosperous community. Success and a productive future community was metaphorically like passing through a doorway and achieving a bright and prosperous future from the launching spot of Coweta County. Logos, colors and graphic depictions were produced and launched in 2012. The various entities closely associated with Coweta agreed to adopt and use these branding components on literature and other identifying vehicles. But what is it that makes Coweta’s boast of being “Prosperity’s Front Door” meaningful and not just a slogan? We identified the basic

Victories and Milestones: “Prosperity’s Front Door” continues to open the door to new opportunity

“pillars” of Coweta’s strengths—healthcare, education, business, shopping, housing and quality of life—to support the claim of being the front door to prosperity. The “healthcare” pillar has been an early focus of the campaign, and in the future we will be featuring the other pillars to give life and meaning to our marketing slogan. Our belief is that “Prosperity’s Front Door” will become more and more closely identified with Coweta County. Coweta’s strength is its people and leadership, its opportunities and possibilities. We have made a great start, and we know that our citizens, our businesses and our elected officials will continue to work together and be “Prosperity’s Front Door” for years to come.

THE NEWNAN-COWETA CHAMBER is the primary business advocacy organization in Coweta County. In 2015 The Chamber delivered plenty of opportunities for its members to prosper. Newnan-Coweta Chamber named National Chamber of the Year CERTAINLY ONE OF THE MOST EXCITING

achievements of the year for the Newnan-Coweta Chamber occurred on August 12, 2015 when it was named the National Chamber of the Year by the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives at the group’s annual convention in Montreal! Chamber of the Year is the nation’s only award recognizing the dual role chambers have in leading businesses and communities. Those honored with the Chamber of the Year designation have demonstrated organizational strength and made an impact on key community priorities, such as education, transportation, business development and quality of life. “We are deeply honored and proud to have won the 2015 Chamber of the Year Award,” said Chamber President and CEO Candace Boothby. “It’s such a great accomplishment for our members and community.” Qualifying for Chamber of the Year is a rigorous process. Chambers compete based on meeting key performance criteria on the ACCE Annual Operations Survey. Qualifying chambers enter the competition with a written application addressing all aspects of organizational operation and programmatic work. There are more than 7,500 chambers nationally.  Out of the 33 chambers nominated, the Newnan-Coweta Chamber competed with chambers not only in the United States but also Canada and Europe.  The Newnan-Coweta Chamber is the first chamber in Georgia since the award program began almost 10 years ago to be named a National Chamber of the Year. Applications are scored by peer chamber executives to determine finalists. Winners are selected from among finalists based on an in-person interview before a panel of experienced chamber professionals. In October, the Chamber hosted a special Chamber of the Year Celebration for members at the McRitchieHollis Museum in Newnan with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, special prize drawings, and rickshaw rides through downtown Newnan.

Maggie McSweeney, of Cardinal Waste Solutions, has been an active member of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber for the past three years and enjoys the opportunities to connect with different individuals and businesses through Chamber events. She currently serves as member of the Diplomats committee and works hard to make sure members of the Chamber are having their needs met by the organization. However, Maggie does much more for the Chamber than that and is described as someone always willing to lend a helping hand in any situation. She has been described as our “go to” volunteer because we know we can count on her to be there whenever we need her and she will go above and beyond the call of duty. Chamber members describe Maggie as someone who is always smiling and is just delightful to be around.

He also serves as the Director of Public Policy for the Coweta County School System. Mark has been an active member of the Newnan-Coweta Chamber since 2003 and loves the connectivity the Chamber brings to businesses, individuals and organizations to the community. Mark is described as a “go to” person, who is always calm in any situation and someone the Chamber board can rely on to keep them grounded. He worked hand in hand with Chamber President and CEO Candace Boothby on the Chamber of the Year application and served on the interview panel which ultimately led to the recognition of National Chamber of the Year. Our achievements are a direct result in many ways from his contributions to the organization.

These NuLink-sponsored breakfast events featured upscale programs and speakers and exclusive information at a fabulous location, The Newnan Centre. Above is speaker Nick Lakha of Paramount Hospital Management.

Coweta’s Biggest Trade Show

In November, the Chamber hosted its most successful Big Expo ever, the Winter Wonderland Big Expo, at the Summit Family YMCA. Presented by Delta Community Credit Union, this event features more than 100 exhibitors sharing their products and services with more than 1,500 attendees.

A Day on the Greens

Our 30th Annual Golf Classic showed why this annual event remains one of the most anticipated, sold-out golf events in the region.

Business Women’s Network

The Business Women’s Network had an exciting year, with programs ranging from the Women, Wealth and Wisdom Conference, with speakers including Lori Auten, Susan Conley and Corby Winters, at right, to the popular luncheon programs with such luminaries as WSB’s Monica Pearson, at left.

Young Professionals

Leadership Coweta

It was a busy year for the Leadership Coweta program as members worked toward the 2016 redesign of the LC program. Designed for those 21-45 and those “young at heart,” the YPs foster personal and professional development through social events, community service and professional opportunities for Coweta’s young professionals. Here, Chamber President and CEO Candace Boothby along with YPs Samantha Brazie of Progressive Heating and Air, Jason Smith of Piedmont Newnan Hospital and Patrick Dillon of Century 21 prepare for the YPs’ Summer Swing Crazy Golf Par-Tee.

Welcoming New Members As a follow-up to its hugely successful 2014 membership campaign, the Chamber in March 2015 offered the March Madness Prime Time event to spotlight new members and welcome them to the Chamber.

Business-After-Hours Celebrating National Chamber of the Year Award

Each month, Chamber members gathered at various Chamber member businesses for networking while enjoying great food and drink. Something Special in Newnan hosted the April BAH.

To celebrate its win of the National Chamber of the Year Award, the Chamber hosted a COTY Celebration event for all members at the McRitchie-Hollis Museum in Newnan.

Small Business of the Year Award EACH YEAR The Chamber recognizes one of our area’s small businesses as the Small Business of the Year. This Award is a testament to the businesses that are key contributors to our local economy, those that lead the majority of our workforce across the threshold to prosperity. Awards are provided in the following categories: Entrepreneur, Growth, Employer and Overall. Small business is the economic engine

of our economy. Nearly 97 percent of all businesses are small businesses with less than 100 employees, and small businesses are 54 percent of the total workforce. The Chamber, SouthTowne Motors and UBS Financial Services are proud to recognize this vital segment of our local economy. SouthTowne Motors and UBS Financial Services are the title sponsors for this program.

LaGrange-Macon highway still possibility By W. Winston Skinner The Georgia Department of Transportation drew up plans for a highway connecting Macon and LaGrange almost three years ago, and some regional officials would like to see that project move forward. Ed Bledsoe, a former mayor of Moreland who now serves on the

Three Rivers Regional Commission, asked about the road project at the most recent regional commission meeting. The current plan calls for the road to pass through Meriwether County – north of the county seat of Greenville. “Discussion has been underway for several years,” noted Carolyn McKinley, president of the

Meriwether County Chamber of Commerce. “Currently the conversation and activity is focused on securing federal funds for a feasibility study.” The project “would have tremendous impact on our entire region,” McKinley said. The highway could have major economic impact for Meriwether County. “Since the proposed route is

south of Coweta, it probably would not have as much there.” Still, there are Cowetans who see positive things coming from a LaGrange-Macon highway – even if its route is several miles south of the county line. “I think the highway would h e l p c o m m e r c e i n C owe t a

Blacksmith has vision for local craft school

Filmmaker Daniel Espeut shows some of the footage shot at Turin’s 125th anniversary celebration during a meeting at the town’s offices with local leaders.

Turin attracts professional Stay Cfilmmaker

By Sarah Fay Campbell In this technology-driven, fast-paced, online world, there’s something to be said for the old ways. But some of those old ways, and old skills, are fading away. Cowetan Michael Sebacher wants to help preserve that knowledge before it is lost. The local blacksmith has a vision for a school where local artisans and craftspeople can share their skills with others. It could also be a place where those who don’t want to teach could still work on their crafts and display them. First, he needs the teachers. He’d like to talk to anyone local who does folk art and crafts who would be interested in being a part of the school. He’s also working on a location. It’s not necessarily limited to arts and crafts. Things like pickling and food preserving, and even beer and wine making might fit in, too. However, “we’re trying to avoid the tech slant,” he said. “The urge to make by hand, to create, is like the same level as the urge to reproduce or eat,” Sebacher said. Thousands of years ago, “you had to build your shelter, you had to build your weapons, build your tools. Every day you made something with your hands, every day you were processing food, processing animal hides. Everything was made. I think it’s a function of our species and now it’s gone,” he said. “We complain about kids always on their cell phones. What else have they got? Where are they going to go to learn anything?” Sebacher would love to have classes for young

Old Luthersville bank building to be rehabilitated By Kandice Bell

McConnell. “It sits right at the corner when you come into town. We want to rehabilitate the building to improve the community overall.” McConnell added that the city council, along with Mayor Bob Trammell, have had several meetings with various agencies in an effort to obtain funding for rehabilitation. “The city is applying for a Redevelopment Fund Grant (RDF) through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs to stabilize and rehabilitate the building,” said McConnell. “Other cities are applying for grants to improve their buildings. We have learned that it is helpful for the city to have ownership of the building when applying for

these grants. The city does own the building.” “After the bank moved to a new location, the building was given to the city,” said Trammell. “It has even served as city hall and a police station.” According to Councilwoman Ginger Valentine-Hancock, the focus of the project is the preservation of historical Luthersville. “We want to maintain the historical value of these little cities,” said Hancock. “We want future generations to know how important this city was to the South and what they went through. The Luthersville Bank and Co. survived the Great Depression.”

The old Luthersville Bank Building will be renovated and, eventually, available for the use of another business. The downtown Luthersville building, constructed in 1905, was originally the home of Luthersville Bank and Company. In 1971, Meriwether Bank and Trust was located in the building. Until recently, the Southcrest Bank called the historic building home. The bank will relocate to North Main Street, leaving the structure empty. “That building is such a cornerstone in Luthersville,” said Councilwoman Diane TODAY

By W. WINSTON SKINNER Turin is one of Coweta’s smaller towns, but the city has attracted the attention of a professional filmmaker. Barbie Beach – the quirky roadside attraction in town that features plastic dolls in various tableaux – may have attracted Daniel Espeut to Turin. The city’s 125th anniversary, however, provided some other authentic, small town Southern moments that led Espeut to collaborate with the town’s leaders in capturing some stories. Espeut is a producer and director. Among his best known projects are “Raised in the South of Norma,” “The É Report” and “Great Paint,” which chronicles the story of a family who leave behind the typical American lifestyle to become circus clowns. “We were pleased at the results from our 125th anniversary film documentary,” said Michael Frnka, who was one of the leaders during Turin’s 125th and was elected later this year to a post on the city council. Espeut “left us with two hours of film which included six interviews,” Frnka said. “The settings were not ideal – with the rain – so we are happy that they are pros.” City leaders are looking at options for using the footage to promote Turin. “It’s ours to do what we want,” Mayor Allan Starr said. Espeut met with Frnka, Starr, Councilman Tony Crunkleton and Tray Baggarly, director of tourism for Coweta County, while he was working on the final version of the 125th film. During the meeting at the Walter B. Hill Community Center, which houses the town’s offices, Espeut said the first part of the process is capturing stories on film. “You build the archive and then you go back,” he said. Frnka said the original footage shot for Espeut’s project will be archived. “Our intention is not to ever contaminate the original,” he said.
