Shane’s Pest Solutions acquires Newnan Pest Control

L

ocal business owner and Coweta County native Shane Loftin has a reason to celebrate. Only a week ago, the owner of Shane’s Pest Solutions acquired Newnan Pest Control from his friend David Hand, who had operated the business for over 25 years. Since opening his business in 2016, Loftin said his friendship with Hand made the deal especially rewarding. “He trusted me enough to sell me their business and take care of their customers – that’s a lot of trust,” Lof-

David Hand, left, recently sold Newnan Pest Control to his friend Shane Loftin, seen here with wife Lindsay and daughter Mia.

t bears the name of stellar classical musician Charles Wadsworth, but Wadsworth Alley was the star last Wednesday. At midday, Main Street Newnan hosted a reveal event to celebrate the renovated common space, located off Madison Street in downtown Newnan. Featured among the renovations

are stop signs, covered with images of downtown Newnan from the past, taken from the archives of The Newnan Times-Herald. Dozens of people explored the alley, which opens into an enclosed courtyard, and enjoyed live music during the celebration.

tin said. “It’s emotional and personal for both of us." The friendship between the two started over lunch several years ago. While both men were in a similar field of business, the two worked out a deal. “I’ve always been a full-service company – pest, termite, mosquito, wildlife,” Loftin said. “I promised David if he sent me leads, I wouldn't solicit his customers for their pest control business.” “I like to refer termite business to good companies since I don’t do that kind of work,” Hand said. “ He’s the kind of person I would love for my customers to have. After lunch, I told him, ‘I hope you buy my business when I get ready to retire.” Flash forward to 2019 – Hand is finally ready to retire with his wife Mary and spend his days waterskiing. Four companies contacted him about acquiring Newnan Pest Control, but only two were worth considering, Hand said. Along with Shane’s Pest Solutions, a larger company based out of Columbus was also in talks with acquiring Hand’s business. In the end, Hand went with Loftin. Loftin said he was grateful for the opportunity to grow his business in the town he grew up in. “This is my hometown, and with David being in business for over 25 years, it felt good being able to keep it local,” Loftin said. Loftin said the acquisition of Hand’s business is significant for not only for himself but his employees, which now includes Preston Edwards  –  an employee of Hand for over 20 years.

“He’s been a faithful, loyal employee that I never had to think about,” Hand said. “Retiring was a tough decision, but I’m really looking forward to the next season of my life. I’ll always be in Newnan, but I’m ready to do something different.” As a former Marine and combat veteran of Iraq, Loftin said his business is focused on veterans and veterans issues. Three of his employees are former Marines. Another employee’s husband is a National Guard member currently deployed in Afghanistan. “Being a combat veteran, I can relate and give them a place to work where they will be more comfortable than someplace else who may not understand what they’re dealing with,” Loftin said. Loftin extends his service through community involvement. Along with being active with veterans programs, the local board of Realtors, and the Chamber of Commerce, Loftin is a member of the VFW, Marine Corp League and supports Healing4Heroes – a nonprofit who pairs rescue dogs to veterans. Alongside his wife Lindsay, the future looks bright for Loftin, who will continue to serve customers in Coweta, Troup, Fayette, Heard, Carroll, and South Fulton counties. “This allows us to make our impact within Coweta and the surrounding areas in the pest control industry and extend our services to even more people,” Loftin said. “We’re very excited about the possibilities.” Clay Neely is the co-publisher for The Newnan Times-Herald, Newnan-Coweta Magazine and Marketplace.

Arden’s Garden set to begin construction soon in Newnan

rden’s Garden is still coming to 98 Temple Avenue in Newnan in the former space of E-Taxi. According to a spokesperson for the company, “As a resident of Newnan myself, I’m certainly excited for the new location to open, and we are looking at starting construction within the next six months.” The spokesperson also informed us, “The City of Newnan recently approved the construction plans following some changes within the drive-thru structure of the building. Since the building sits rather close to a state highway, adjustments had to be made to the plans.” The City Menus originally released details about the new juice bar at the end of December 2018. Read that article below: The Board of Zoning Appeals for the City of Newnan recently approved a Variance request for Arden’s Garden located at 98 Temple Avenue. Arden’s Garden serves fresh juice in a juice bar restaurant concept. This particular stand-alone structure which formerly housed E-Taxi will be converted into the juice bar with a drive-through component. A renovation will happen very soon to the current 280 square-feet along with a 670 squarefeet addition being added. The unique character of the former building reflects the design goals for Arden’s Garden. Leslie Zinn, owner of Arden’s Garden tells The City Menus, “We are excited about putting a location in Newnan, We’ve been interested in

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another.” – Galatians 5:22-26

opening in south Atlanta. We look forward in expanding our mission to offer healthy options that are convenient and affordable.” Leslie’s mother Arden and father Ed originally founded the company in 1995. In addition to the future location in west Newnan, customers can find Arden’s Garden fresh juices in supermarkets all over the area, such as Publix and Kroger. Many local coffee shops, health clubs, and restaurants make their juices available. Arden’s Garden recently opened a retail location in Douglasville and have many other locations across the Atlanta area such as Sandy Springs, Buckhead, Vinings, Athens. Its main processing plant is in East Point where they make fresh juice five days a week and deliver it all over the city. Jonathan Dockery is the creator of The City Menus LLC. new building downtown could possibly allow a new home for Wishbone Fried Chicken, along with several housing opportunities upstairs. Tuesday night, the Newnan Planning Commission unanimously granted a certificate of appropriateness for a new two-story structure at 31 Jackson Street, which is currently being used as a parking lot owned by Beth Barnett. The area is directly adjacent to Wishbone Fried Chicken and faces McKoon Funeral Home. Developer Tommy Sweet is hoping to

construct a two-story building for business use on the bottom floor and residential on the top. The first floor of the new construction would be 4,750 square feet and would house the Wishbone Restaurant along with several other offices for commercial use. The 4,400-square-foot second floor would allow four studio apartments, a one-bedroom apartment and a two-bedroom apartment. Sweet said he hopes to begin construction within a month and a half.
