Drivers might not be able to control the price at the pump, but there are many ways drivers can spend less on fuel, helping them save money and helping the environment along the way.

Emphasizing Efficiency Making a vehicle more efficient is a great way to save money at the pump. Adequately inflate tires. Tires that are not properly inflated increase drag on a vehicle, which then consumes more fuel to operate at full capacity. Check the driver's manual for the manufacturer's recommended tire pressure, and check the tire pressure frequently to ensure your car isn't working harder than it needs to be. Clear out the trunk. A car filled with clutter is carrying unnecessary weight, making it harder for the car to accelerate and consuming more fuel than it should be. Clear out the trunk and anything inside the vehicle that you don't need. Open the windows at lower speeds. Air conditioning consumes lots of fuel, and many auto experts suggest rolling down the windows

when driving at lower speeds. When you begin driving a little faster, roll the windows up and turn on the air conditioning to reduce drag.

Spend wisely How you're spending at the pump can also help you reduce fuel consumption and save you money. Fill 'er up! Many drivers avoid filling up their tank when visiting the gas station for fear that filling up the tank makes the car heavier, decreasing the vehicle's fuel efficiency as a result. While that may be true, drivers who don't fill up make more trips to the filling station, and those trips can waste fuel. In addition, when the gas cap is removed from your vehicle, vaporized gas escapes from the tank, so opening the cap more frequently allows more vaporized gas to escape. Pay for gas with a card that rewards you with cash for making purchases. While using a cash-back credit card won't reduce your fuel consumption, it will earn you some money back on your fuel purchases. Don't pay more for fuel your car won't utilize. Some drivers might feel as though putting a

Parents who wish to secure a spot for their child in the 201314 Coweta County School System Pre-Kindergarten classes will be able to do so at their child’s district school between March 11 and March 22. During that two-week period, parents can apply for a spot in the limited-space Pre-K classes for the 2013-14 school year. Pre-K application ends at noon Friday, March 22, and a drawing for spots will be held at schools at 1 p.m. that afternoon. To apply for a spot in next year’s Coweta County School System Pre-K program, parents must visit their child’s districted school and show proof of eligibility to register. That includes:

Parents may apply only at the school that serves their legal address. ■ The child’s Social Security card ■ Photo identification Children must be 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2013, to be eligible for next year’s PreKindergarten. Parents can call 770-254-2820 to inquire about which elementary school district serves their home. Unlike other elementary school grades, there are a limited number of Pre-K classes in Coweta schools. If more than 22 students apply for an available Pre-K class, the school must hold a lottery drawing to determine placement in the class. The first 22 students drawn will be awarded a spot in that school’s Pre-K class; the remaining names will be placed in order of draw on a waiting list for that school in case spots in the class open later. Parents do not need to be present for the drawing on March 22. Elementary schools will accept Pre-K applications for eligible students on Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 11-22. A Thunderous Time Annual diversity program celebrates talents, differences By Nicole Golden nichole@newnan.com

The rousing performance of the Ugandan Thunder African Children’s Choir was the highlight of the annual Diversity Program at Arnall Middle School in Newnan in February. Students and staff members were invited to dance alongside their new friends at the end of the performance of an African drum song, an Exodus dance and “God Bless Uganda, and God Bless This Land.” The theme of this year’s program was “Our Different Talents Make the World a Better Place.” The program opened with the National Anthem, and then a parade of flags. Arnall students presented flags and spoke a greeting in the corresponding native language. Pastor Tamarkus Cook of St. Smyrna Baptist Church presented words of encouragement to the students. “Diversity promotes humanistic values,” said Cook. He noted that the world would not be an exciting place if we all did the exact same things for the exact same reasons. “Embracing differences is the sign of a cultured individual,” said Cook. The local creative dance group Final Breakthrough Dance Ensemble presented “Take Me to the King.” Group member Hadiya

Harden is an eighth-grade student at Arnall. Students Zyon Brock and Hope Kjar were soloists, and Lauren Cook played a piano piece. The Arnall Chorus also took part in the program, singing “We are The World.” A perfectly still audience listened as Ted Moody, director of the Ugandan Children’s Choir, spoke about the group and their home, the Royal School & Orphanage in Mityana, Uganda. “They are wonderful, precious children,” said Moody. The orphanage is home to 652 children, half of whom are orphans due to losing parents to malaria or other illness. Some of them have been abandoned. Moody told the Arnall students that the Ugandan children have no televisions, video games, or phones. “They have none of the things that you think you need to be happy,” he said. “It’s in yourself.” The children’s choir is halfway through an 11-month tour of the United States and will perform at Dollywood in March. During their enthusiastic performance, the Ugandan children invited staff members, including Principal Jan Franks and willing students, to join them on the gym floor for dancing. The singers were praised with thunderous applause and cheering. Afterwards, choir members

visited classrooms so that students could learn more about their culture. The choir was to perform at Arnall last year but, due to visa issues, the visit came a bit late. The school’s program was coordinated by Mrs. Jill Alford, social studies teacher, and a committee of faculty members. “We are so blessed today,” said Franks upon wrapping up the Diversity Program. She encouraged her students to embrace differences in others. “Sometimes that’s difficult in middle school,” said Franks. She noted that the Ugandan children had arrived earlier than most of the students that morning by bus. “They were already smiling and ready to go,” she said. Running Out of Time

here is an uneven sound throughout our casa this week. It’s like listening to some rock band and you know something is missing. And it finally hits you there’s no guitarist. What’s missing around here is the Eldest SON of Thunder. And I realized this week that lack of sound will continue to occur more and more. And I realized I am running out of time. Eldest is off on a mission trip with his youth group. They are not doing the normal Mexico visit, but are staying closer to home, actually just up the road a bit. Eldest and others are staying at an inner city shelter in Atlanta, working with the homeless. It was his decision. In fact, the Little Black Dress and I didn’t even know about it; he brought it up. And so we read the flyers about the program, run through the Atlanta Dream Center. “This program offers adults and teens from across the country an opportunity to experience inner-city ministry first hand. During this urban mission trip, participants will have the chance to feed the homeless, connect with kids and teens, reach out to those trapped in sex slavery, experience community living, and much more. Those who come will not only make a lasting impact on Atlanta’s poverty stricken communities, they themselves will experience lifechange as they grow as individuals and a group.” As I read that, several things popped into my head. That as the greatest and richest country in the world, we have homeless people in one of the biggest cities in America. Yes, I know we have homeless, always will. But why? It also hit me that Eldest was willing to give up a week of zombie killing to go hang out with kids more familiar with real guns than what they can buy with points earned from completing some waypoint on a video game. And it hit me that Eldest, despite not yet having a driver’s license, is growing up. And I am running out of time. He called earlier in the week. The Dress said you could hear the excitement in his voice. Eldest had met a friend. I never got the friend’s name, but learned quite a bit. He was a tattoo artist, and Eldest went into great detail about the tattoos on his face, which apparently the artist had done himself. Eldest never quite pinpointed why the

artist was homeless, something about being robbed and losing everything. And they apparently just hung out and talked. I’m guessing they talked until the artist was overwhelmed. Eldest can out talk The Dress, which is saying something. And as The Dress was relaying the conversation, I realized Eldest is experiencing a side of life previously foreign to him. His only contact with tattoo artists was when he decided to draw a moustache on one of his younger brothers. There are few things in the world that really work as advertised. Let me assure you when the marker says “permanent,” trust it. Short of a sandblasting, it took days to get that off. Eldest is growing up and I’m running out of time. The cliche is moms try to keep their kids from experiencing too much too fast. Dads are pushing for them to experience more and quicker. This was the first time Eldest has been gone this long. And his first foray into leaving the nest wasn’t the grandparents, or summer camp, but hanging with the homeless and sleeping in a dorm. I texted a few times and would always get short, one- or twoword responses. Not like him, but he explained he was busy. I am running out of time. Soon he will be gone for longer stretches, like college. And soon, he will leave the house for good. And I’m not ready. There is so much I think I still need to teach him, to show him, to guide him on. And I worry if he will be ready, if I’ve done my job as a dad. I am running out of time. And yet I take great comfort in the fact Eldest decided he’d rather hang with the homeless and do what he can than spend his winter vacation killing zombies or building new worlds on Minecraft. And so my goal is to continue to use what time I have left to help the SONs find God’s purpose for them, which to me is one of the most important things a dad can teach.

Family Fiesta Soft Tacos

Prep time: 5 minutes Cook time: 20 minutes Serves: 2 Spray oil 4 (6-inch) corn tortillas 2/3 cup canned red enchilada sauce 2 tablespoons reduced-fat sour cream 1 cup warm taco meat filling (from Family Fiesta Soft Tacos recipe) 1/4 cup finely shredded sharp, cheddar cheese 1 tablespoon finely chopped cilantro Preheat oven to 375°F. Heat large skillet over high heat. Spray with a thin film of oil and wipe out with a paper towel. Cook tortillas on both sides until blistered and soft, about 1 minute per side; keep warm. While tortillas are cooking, pour 1/3 cup enchilada sauce into a pie plate or small rectangular baking dish, about 6 x 10 inches. Mix the remaining sauce with sour cream; set aside. Mix meat filling, cheese and cilantro in medium mixing bowl. To assemble: Fill a tortilla with 1/4 cup of the meat mixture, and roll up like a tight cigar. Place seam-side down in the baking dish. Repeat with remaining tortillas and filling. Pour enchilada/sour cream mixture over enchiladas. Cover tightly with foil and bake until sauce is bubbling, about 15 minutes. Top with green onions.

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 8 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1/2 cup diced onion 1 pound extra-lean ground beef or turkey 1 can (4 ounces) diced, mild green chiles 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes, no salt added, drained 1/2 cup drained canned corn 1/2 cup drained and rinsed canned red kidney beans 1 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper Salt, to taste Spray oil 8 8-inch whole-wheat flour tortillas, warmed according to package directions 1/2 cup shredded Monterey Jack cheese 1 cup finely shredded lettuce 1 cup diced avocados Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and sauté until lightly browned, stirring often, about 4 minutes. Add beef and cook until lightly browned, about 4 minutes. Add chiles, tomatoes, corn, beans, chili powder, cumin and pepper and stir until heated through, about 3 minutes. Season to taste with salt, if needed. Transfer to a serving bowl and keep warm. To serve, plate up warm tortillas, dish up cheese, lettuce, and avocado (if desired). Assemble and enjoy.

Smoky Southwest Chicken and Wild Rice Soup Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 6 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup thinly sliced celery 1 can (10 3/4 ounces) reduced-sodium cream of chicken soup 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth 1 cup cooked wild rice 1 cup canned, sliced carrots, drained 2 cans (3 ounces each) premium chunk chicken breast in water, drained 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin Pinch ground chipotle chile 1 cup shredded, pepper jack cheese, divided 1/3 cup evaporated fat-free canned milk or heavy cream 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro Cilantro sprigs for garnish In a large saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat; add onion and celery. Sauté, stirring occasionally, 8 to 10 minutes or until softened. Stir in soup and broth. Add rice, carrots, chicken, chili powder, cumin, chipotle chile and 3/4 cup cheese; bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes to blend flavors; stir in evaporated milk and chopped cilantro. Garnish with remaining cheese and cilantro sprigs.

Stir-Fried Ginger Beef and Broccoli Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 10 minutes Serves: 4 12 ounces beef sirloin strip steak, cut in 1/4-inch strips 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon water 2 teaspoons dark molasses 2 teaspoons cornstarch Pinch crushed red pepper flakes 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (divided) 1/2 large red onion, cut in 1/2-inch chunks 1/2 cup canned corn kernels 1 can (4 ounces) sliced mushrooms, drained 1 large garlic clove, minced 1 tablespoon minced gingerroot 1 cup canned, diced tomatoes, drained 4 cups (12 ounces) broccoli florets, cut in bite-size pieces 1/2 cup water 1 scallion, roots trimmed, thinly sliced Toss beef, soy sauce, water, molasses, cornstarch and crushed red pepper in a mixing bowl until the beef is uniformly coated; set aside for 15 minutes. Heat wok over high heat until smoking hot. Add 1 teaspoon oil. Add onion and stir-fry until translucent, about 1 minute. Add corn and mushrooms and stir-fry until heated through, about 1 minute. Add garlic and ginger and stir-fry another 30 seconds. Transfer to a clean mixing bowl. Add another teaspoon of oil to the wok and heat until smoking. Add beef and stir fry until browned, about 3 minutes. Add diced tomatoes and continue cooking until beef is cooked through, scraping any brown bits clinging to the surface of the wok into the mixture. Transfer to bowl with vegetables. Add remaining oil to wok. Add broccoli florets and stir-fry until bright green, about 1 minute. Add 1/2 cup water, toss with broccoli, cover and steam until broccoli is tender, about 2 minutes. Uncover, return vegetables and beef to broccoli, and toss until everything is combined. Scrape onto a large serving platter. Garnish with sliced scallion.
