GOT WARTS? Plantar warts are very painful and unsightly problems that are commonly caused by a virus and often difficult to treat. Methods of treatment include: salicylic acid, drying agents and even surgery.
Now there is another option that is an excellent method of treatment. The Pulse Dye Laser excludes any cutting. It restricts the blood supply to the wart, therefore completely destroying the wart. The success rates have been 90% with one to four treatments. Most patients are able to return to their normal activity the next day.
The Fisk Jubilee Singers performed Nov. 16 on the LaGrange College campus.
Fisk Singers perform in LaGrange When the Fisk Jubilee Singers took the stage at Callaway Auditorium on Nov. 16, Dr. Toni Anderson felt a strong emotional tie to the group. Anderson, chair of the LaGrange College music department, recently had a book published about the choir. “‘Tell Them We are Singing for Jesus’: The Original Fisk Jubilee Singers and Christian Reconstruction, 18721878” chronicles the story of a group of musicians who were formed to save their institution, Fisk University in Nashville, after it fell on hard times following the Civil War.
Ga. Aquarium gets two new beluga whales ATLANTA (AP) — The world’s largest aquarium has added two new beluga whales. The giant stars — named Qinu (KEE-nu) and Grayson — arrived at the Georgia Aquarium last week from Sea World San Antonio. The duo joins the aquarium’s belugas Maris and Beethoven, who are older and larger than the newcomers. Qinu is a 2-year-old female and weighs more than 600 pounds. Grayson, a 3-year-old male, weighs more than 800 pounds. One of the aquarium’s belugas, Nico (NEE-co), died suddenly last year of encephalitis while staying at Sea World in Texas. The whales were there temporarily while the downtown Atlanta aquarium renovated their habitat.
The original Jubilee Singers introduced “slave songs” to the world in 1871 when they went on tour to raise funds for their financially strapped university. They were instrumental in preserving the American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals. “They had an incredible journey which began with hardship but ended with great triumph,” Anderson said. “They were a sensation here in the United States, but even
more so overseas. They toured England and much of Europe and played for Queen Victoria.” The group raised more than enough money to save their school. In fact, funds from the singers’ 1873 European tour were used to build Jubilee Hall on the campus of Fisk University. The building is a national historic landmark and still is in use today. The Fisk Jubilee Singers continue to perform and tour. In
1999, they were featured in “Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory” a PBS award-winning television documentary series, produced by WGBH/Boston. In 2008, the singers received the National Medal of Arts, the country's highest honor for artists and patrons of the arts. Most recently, they were nominated for a 2010 Grammy for their collaboration with gospel and blues musician Jonny Lang on the song “I Believe.”
