Born in Madisonville, Ky in 1911, Mildred worked as a mural painter and graphic designer for the Federal Arts Project. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1926 to 1933 in Fine arts and after, travelled to Paris to study under Fernand Leger. Waltrip worked at Marshall Field in their Advertisment Department from 1936 to 1937, where she illustated children’s books. After her career at the FAP, Waltrip transitioned as commerical artist and worked on many George Barr books from the 1960s to 70s. She was also known for her murals where she needed as special scaffolding due to her leg brace caused by Polio. Many of her murals illustrated many fictional and historical figures, such as Robin Hood or the history of aviation, but few remain. Her mural “The Process” in Oak Park, IL was removed in 1995 due to a racist portrayal of Africans in loinclothes and spears. Besided her mural work, Waltrips design work centered around advertisments and promotional posters.

Found a gouache work that was visually compelling to me. The illustrative lines and the personality the people in the scene had really drew my eye and wanted to do something similar after that.

Reflection

02/21

27

This project was definitely a challenge for me both conceptually and technically. In terms of the creative process, I struggled to find an approach that is reflective of the designer and one that I like. It’s probably good though, in the field I won’t get much say into what projects I’m assigned and the type of things people want. Designers need to be creative and flexible! With the past few projects, I had some freedom to explore and found this sort of comfort level that wasn’t what the assignment needed. Maybe taking more risks and exploring breathe properly could alleviate it? I also remember putting a lot of pressure on myself to make something good without having a goal set in mind and trying to impress people/compete with people. Very toxic in hindsight. I think for next time, my goal is to try to make something good and something I’m satisfied with. Over the project, I also was constantly overthinking about smaller details and looking for new inspiration so I’d freeze up before taking the next step. I talked to an advisor about this creative overthinking and she was like “enter robot-mode” and that helped to get the work done, but I still had this internal dialogue that ate away at my confidence. Maybe robot-mode is an appropriate measure for next time. In the end, I do like the direction I went with and my mailer design but I still have lots to learn! Very excited!
