To introduce ourselves, we are the new Editorsin-Chief, Islay Kilgannon and Kyriaki Mallioglou.

With a certainty of success for their future endeavors, paired with a nostalgic sadness, we say goodbye to our previous Editors-in-Chief, Marije Nieuwland and Marie Voerman. They have led us through a year of creating with formidable strength and patience, always there to offer a helping hand and an open mind.

Though we will miss them dearly, we are ready to celebrate this new chapter. And what better way to turn the page than with a family vacation.

In this very special “travel” edition of the Cul, we put ourselves in the shoes of the many tourists that walk the streets of our own city. Throughout a week of canal boat rides and museum visits, we explored Amsterdam from a new point of view and gathered inspiration for the articles you will read within these pages. By navigating the culture of bachelor parties, Masja Willekens questions when the dreamy escapism of parties and holidays ends and daily life begins. Isa Kistemaker takes a hit while explaining the intricate world of drug-policy here in the Netherlands, while Janina Ryymin uses her experience in the field to unpack the dark underworld of the hotel service industry.

Meer dan een toeristenorganisatie Zomer met de Algemene Nederlandse Wielrijdersbond Kaki-groene afritsbroeken, heuptasjes, fleecevesten en wandelschoenen. Wie in Nederland opgroeit, zal dit waarschijnlijk wel herkennen: typische ANWB-producten. De Wielrijdersbond uit 1883 is inmiddels uitgegroeid tot dé toeristenorganisatie van Nederland. Vooral wanneer de zomervakantie aanbreekt, lijken de ANWB-families toe te nemen. Voorbereid en verzekerd gaan we op reis, zoals Brigitte Kaandorp scherp opmerkte: ‘ANWB-stellen houden van verrassingen als het maar niet plotseling is’.

D

eze zomer bevind ik mij ook in ANWB-sferen. Met een kant-en-klaar vakantiepakket trek ik met mijn familie de Franse bergen in. Hoewel avontuurlijk en actief, de wandelroute en slaapplekken zijn vooraf geregeld. Zelfs onze bagage wordt elke dag naar het volgende hotel gebracht. We willen geen ‘te plotselinge verrassingen’: mijn vader heeft de routebeschrijving geprint in mapjes opgeborgen en we gaan iedere dag met belegde broodjes, mueslirepen en grote literflessen water op pad. En natuurlijk is het ANWBledenpasje mee, waarmee we zijn verzekerd, mocht er onderweg iets gebeuren met de auto.

Aangekomen bij het eerste hotel komen we erachter dat de enige andere gasten - twee Nederlandse gezinnen en een Frans stel - dezelfde wandeltocht zullen maken. We zitten de volgende ochtend met z’n allen aan het ontbijt en beginnen vervolgens uitgedost in stevige wandelschoenen, luchtige shirts en volledig ingesmeerd met zonnebrand aan dezelfde route (“volg de rode blokjes GR5”). Eén gezin, komen we elke dag weer tegen. We zien hen ofwel tijdens het wandelen ofwel bij de enige auberge waar je koffiepauze kunt houden. Aan het eind van de dag zitten we aan het diner bij dezelfde slaapplek.

Ondernemende wielrenners Het valt toch op hoeveel alle wandelaars op elkaar lijken.

Niet alleen qua uitrusting, maar vooral qua gedrag. Bij de routebordjes staat iedereen zich ongeveer tien minuten te oriënteren en niemand wijkt af van het pad. Ook wij volgen braaf de aangegeven route. De alternatieve paden die mijn broer suggereert, worden weinig vertrouwd. De ANWBroute is heilig.

Een kijkje op de website leert ons meer over de geschiedenis van de ANWB. De bond beschrijft zichzelf als ‘net zo typisch Nederlands als speculaas bij de koffie’, waarbij ik me meteen afvraag wat dan typisch Nederlands is. Eén ding is wel duidelijk: fietsen. Daar begon het ook allemaal mee. In 1883 hielden twee fietsclubs, uit Den Haag en Haarlem, tegelijkertijd pauze in een café in Hillegom tijdens hun fietstocht. De jongens van de Ooievaar uit Den Haag en de Haarlemse Vélocipède Club raakten aan de praat en hieruit ontstond het idee om een samenwerkingsverband van fietsclubs door het hele land op te richten. Dit verklaart ook de benaming van de ANWB: Algemene Nederlandse Wielrijders Bond. Steeds meer wielerverenigingen sloten zich aan en de ANWB groeide uit tot een nationale bond voor wielrijders. Niet alleen kwamen er een eigen blad ‘De Kampioen!’, gidsen en handboeken, ook regelde de ANWB de bewegwijzering op de fietspaden en werden er toertochten en wedstrijden georganiseerd. Natuurlijk waren er ook feestavonden die zorgden voor plezier tot in de late uurtjes.

Ook wij volgen braaf de aangegeven route

Van wegenwacht tot Air Assistance De wielrijdersbond bereikte al snel veel succes en de beleidsterreinen van de organisatie breidde zich uit. Van het uittekenen van fietsroutes nam de ANWB er ook wandelroutes bij en sinds de jaren 60 regelde de ANWB de bewegwijzering van autoroutes. Hoewel de ANWB gezien wordt als dé organisatie van Nederland wat betreft vakantie, is dat niet het enige. Anno 2022 is het haast een overheidsorgaan gezien de uitgebreide diensten die ze leveren. De ANWB-wegenwacht staat 24/7 voor je klaar, er zijn ANWB-experts voor het geven van juridische informatie en de ANWB Medical Air Assistance bieden helikopters plus piloot voor traumacentra en (semi) overheden.

Hoewel professionele werknemers belangrijk zijn voor de ANWB, is het succes vooral te danken aan vrijwilligers. Op de website benoemt de organisatie dat deze groep de kracht is waar de organisatie op draait. De vrijwilligers zijn vanaf het begin af aan al nauw betrokken bij de bond. Toen voerden zij taken uit als het uittekenen van routes en het organiseren van de competities en feesten.

Nu zetten zij zich in voor een van de maatschappelijke projecten die zijn opgezet door de bond, zoals het ‘ANWB Kinderfietsenplan’ dat fietsen verzamelt voor degenen die dat niet kunnen betalen of het ‘ANWB Automaatje’ waar vrijwilligers zich als chauffeur aandienen en mindervalide buurtgenoten van de ene naar de andere plek rijden. Blijkbaar zit er iets in die gele met witte letters wat een doorsnee van de Nederlandse burgers aantrekt.

Dezelfde windjacks Maar hoe zorg je er als bond voor dat leden zich blijven herkennen? Het heeft toch iets ‘burgerlijks’ om zo verzekerd en veilig op weg te gaan. Niet echt een sexy identiteit. We moeten lachen als we een ouder echtpaar met dezelfde windjacks naast elkaar zien lopen en drijven de spot op Instagram wanneer we een foto plaatsen waarop we “echt zó ANWB” zijn: #deANWBfamilieopstap.

Toch zit er iets liefs in die identiteit. Soms kijk ik naar het programma We zijn er bijna, waar 50+ers met hun geliefde caravan op groepsreis gaan. Het is aandoenlijk om ze te zien stuntelen met het inparkeren, het aantrekken van wandelschoenen voor een strandwandeling en de reisleider alles tot in de nopjes heeft gepland. En de lol die ze met elkaar maken, roept ontroering op. Vooral als je tijdens de diepte-interviews hoort over de meegemaakte tegenspoed in hun levens. Het programma kijk je niet voor de filosofische diepgang, maar wat je wel ziet is een groep mensen die zich al na dag één verbonden met elkaar voelt.

Zou dat dan de kracht van de ANWB-identiteit zijn? Niet de ANWB, maar juist het kunnen herkennen dat anderen óók die fiets-, wandeltocht of reis gaan maken.

Dat je in een onbekend land toch je eigen groep terug kan vinden. Het is de samenhorigheid die de ANWB het succes verleent. Zelfs in tijden waar het speculaasje bij de koffie niet zo vanzelfsprekend meer is en de ANWB-winkels door digitalisering langzaam uit het straatbeeld verdwijnen.

Sterker nog: terwijl ons steeds meer wordt geleerd zelf maar voor dat speculaasje te zorgen, hoeft dat bij de ANWB (nog) niet. Daar blijft de verenigingsmentaliteit als een paal boven water: een echte bond die zich inzet voor een groep in plaats van het individu.

Niet echt een sexy identiteit Terwijl mijn moeder de mueslirepen uitdeelt, lachen we om de overeenkomsten tussen onze medewandelaars. Toch valt er in die overeenkomsten juist wat te halen. De ervaring van de bergwandeltochten kan je namelijk delen. Het afzien, de hitte, de op hol geslagen koe of de onduidelijke instructies heb je niet als enige meegemaakt. Aan het eind van de dag, aangekomen bij de auberge waar iedereen van hetzelfde avondmaal geniet, kunnen deze verhalen onder elkaar in geuren en kleuren worden gedeeld. Ik moet het ze nageven: de ANWB zorgt voor verbinding die we wat mij betreft moeten koesteren.

Alone and away Text and Image

I

t’s eight o’clock in the morning, I’ve slept through my alarm, and I’m right on time for the bus when I realise I’ve forgotten to pay my phone bill. My state of disarray adds a tone of excitement, as if I was travelling to the other side of the world and not a mere three-hour drive to Brussels.

Though my journey is not seamless- the bus driver stops at an unexpected location before a few brave passengers negotiate our way to the correct stop- I am surprisingly calm.

It’s impossible for me to be late as there’s no one waiting on me, and no expectations to mitigate but my own.

In the following days I entertain myself in all the ways a tourist might, moving through a new place, untethered and open to possibility. In a sea of unfamiliar sights and sounds I can be anyone or no one at all. I take in the city, my experiences filtered solely by the faint knowing that they will become stories to be retold later. It lends to the sense that I can do anything and make ‘yes’ a gut reaction rather than a calculated decision. Nights are spent drinking Belgian beers with strangers, lacklustre attempts at speaking foreign languages, and contemplating how we all got here and where we will go next. I reveal parts of my life to people I will never see again, and yet this fleetingness does not seem to matter. There is freedom in this particular kind of solitude, and anonymity is emboldening.

In a last minute decision to spend my evening at a concert, I head towards the venue feeling self-satisfied in my

own spontaneity. As I approach my destination, I am struck by a sudden self consciousness. The entrance is obscured by a crowd of people and the terraces that line the street are full.

Conversations in French are punctuated with easy laughter while friends embrace in greeting. My own aloneness becomes impossible to ignore. It’s paralysing- the anxiety that comes with simply not knowing- what to do, where to go, how to belong in this environment. I walk aimlessly down quieter streets to avoid the scene altogether and find myself on a sun baked plaza overlooking the city. My discomfort melts under the setting sun and I gather the courage to go back to the venue, head inside, and squeeze into a singular open seat in the balcony just moments before the show starts.

In the midst of hundreds of people I am small and alone once again, but enraptured by the music onstage we become indistinguishable from one another.

Throughout my solo travel, I oscillate between freedom and spontaneity, anxiety and insecurity. Often these moods exist all at once. In the moments where self consciousness threatens to upset the careful balance, I seek refuge in the vaulted ceilings of the city’s cathedrals, sheltered by silence and stained glass. I lay in the grass of shaded parks when I’m tired of walking and decision making.

In these quiet, unremarkable moments I find sweetness in self contentment. Alone is not lonely, and to enjoy your own company makes this true.

Elke Amsterdammer die in het bezit is van een fiets en deze zo af en toe of vaker gebruikt, kent het grootste gevaar op de weg: toeristen. In hordes komen ze uit het station of touringcars gestroomd, op weg naar het zo lastig mogelijk maken van het leven van de weggebruiker. Toeristen zijn er in overvloed, vooral wanneer de internationale vakanties zijn aangebroken. De plannen van de Amsterdamse driehoek - de burgemeester, politie en officier van justitie - steken hier een stokje voor.

rijdagmiddag, de collegezaal uit gerend naar mijn fiets die ik met dubbel slot heb vastgemaakt aan een brug over de Nieuwe Achtergracht. Er zit precies een half uur tijd tussen nu en het moment dat ik presentabel op de werkvloer moet staan. Het is zomer: dat betekent dat ik zeker weet dat ik óf te laat ga komen óf wat toeristen opzij moet gaan duwen op de Nieuwmarkt. Ondanks mijn goede geweten is dat tweede toch vaker waar ik voor kies. De Jodenbreestraat overleefd, is het altijd nog de vraag hoeveel onoplettende toeristen rechtstreeks vanuit de coffeeshop vandaag de straat over zullen steken. Dan hebben we het nog niet eens over de vakantieganger die na het roken van een wietje zelf een tweewieler opstapt, zonder enig benul van de wettelijke en sociale regels op en rondom het fietspad. Als er iets is wat ik heb geleerd van het verkeer in Amsterdam, is dat dit de ergste groep mensen is om tegen te komen, vooral als je haast hebt. Ze slingeren wat heen en weer, fietsen links, kijken achterom, naar boven, naar de grond en vooral niet vooruit. Soms vraag ik me af of ze immuun zijn voor het geluid van een fietsbel. Een paar Nederlandse beledigingen die ze toch niet verstaan - eruit flappen, helpt beter om een botsing te voorkomen. Ik heb medelijden met zij die het niet eens naar hun gehuurde fiets hebben gemaakt, maar in plaats daarvan kokhalzend in een steegje staan of verwoed hun tas ondersteboven leeggooien op zoek naar de sleutels die nog binnen op de toonbank liggen.

Amsterdam verandert in de vakantieweken in een pretpark, als ik de woorden van artiest Jan Modaal mag lenen.

Keer op keer lukt het me dan toch om zonder kleerscheuren bij de pont aan te komen. Inmiddels ben ik het gewend.

Zo is Amsterdam nou eenmaal. Amsterdam, de stad waar geen ruimte is voor een dak boven je hoofd maar er wel drie coffeeshops zijn te vinden in een straal van vijftig meter. De stad waar ik geboren ben maar het liefst zo snel mogelijk aan ontkom wanneer de zomervakantie begint.

Verbod Niet alleen ik, maar ook de machthebbende driehoek van de stad met de drie kruisjes heeft last van drugstoeristen. Het gemakkelijk verkrijgen van wiet en hasj zorgt volgens hen tot overlast in de binnenstad. Denk hierbij aan kotsende, schreeuwende en asociale toeristen. Loop over de wallen en je zult ongetwijfeld een voorbeeld van voorgaande zin tegenkomen. Nu Amsterdam massaal weer wordt bezocht na de corona lockdowns, valt het nog meer op wat de invloed van toerisme is op de stad. Opeens is het toch een stuk drukker - en ook viezer - op straat. Femke Halsema is sindsdien opgeroepen door onder meer het georganiseerd bedrijfsleven en de toerismebranche om over te gaan op actie. ‘We gaan absoluut niet naar een cannabisvrij Amsterdam, coffeeshops horen bij de stad,’ zegt Halsema in gesprek met Het Parool.

‘Maar er is ook een enorm verlangen om het toerisme bij te sturen. Onze vrijheid mag geen vrijbrief zijn voor grote groepen jongeren om in de grachten te kotsen omdat ze te veel geblowd en gedronken hebben.’

‘Coffeeshops horen bij de stad’, aldus Halsema In januari 2021 is de driehoek begonnen met het protest tegen de verkoop van cannabis aan toeristen om het imago van de hoofdstad van Nederland als seks- en internationale cannabishoofdstad te veranderen. In een brief aan de gemeenteraad, opgesteld door de driehoek, wordt er gepleit voor een ‘ingezetenencriterium’ (i-criterium), ofwel dat buitenlandse toeristen binnenkort geen coffeeshops meer mogen betreden. Om dit te controleren moeten bezoekers een identificatiebewijs of een bewijs van de gemeente laten zien waaruit blijkt dat ze in Nederland wonen. Het i-criterium is een overblijfsel van de wietpas: een pas die in 2012 werd ingevoerd in Brabant, Limburg en Zeeland om drugstoeristen langs de grens tegen te gaan. Om deze pas te verkrijgen - die je nodig had om een coffeeshop te mogen betreden - moest je lid zijn van een besloten club (het b-criterium). Het handhaven van deze regel zorgde voor veel protest en illegale handel. De wietpas is daarom afgeschaft en nooit landelijk ingevoerd.

‘Veel van de grote problemen in de stad worden gevoed vanuit de cannabismarkt: van overlast door drugstoerisme tot zware misdaad en geweld’ begint de brief.

Toch is er lange tijd niks gedaan tegen deze overlast uit angst voor illegale handel, net zoals bij de wietpas het gevolg was.

‘Straatdealers hangen op straat rond, vallen bezoekers lastig en gedragen zich vaak agressief ’ aldus burgemeester Halsema in een interview met de Telegraaf. Wanneer het i-criterium zal worden doorgevoerd, zullen ongetwijfeld meer straatdealers opduiken. Ondanks deze angst voor illegale handel, liggen de plannen nog steeds op tafel. Om de overlast van illegale handel tegen te gaan zal het cameratoezicht in de stad worden verbeterd, er een portiersnetwerk worden opgezet en er komt een waarschuwingscampagne op verschillende sociale

media, in hotels en in de openbare ruimte. Het belangrijkste punt van de brief is dat coffeeshops een keurmerk moeten behalen door te voldoen aan extra regels ‘ten aanzien van transparantie, bedrijfsvoering en voorlichting’. In ruil hiervoor mogen coffeeshops een grotere voorraad aanhouden en wordt er minder hard opgetreden bij overtredingen. Je kan je afvragen wat het nut is van een grotere voorraad wanneer er geen wiet meer aan toeristen mag worden verkocht en of deze versoepeling van straffen op overtreding niet ook bijdraagt aan onwettige verkoop.

Als het aan Amsterdam ligt ‘Geen wiet meer voor toeristen, als het aan Amsterdam ligt,’ luidt een kop van een RTL Nieuws artikel. Een nogal misleidende titel, als je het mij vraagt. Sinds wanneer zijn Femke Halsema, René de Beukelaer en de politie heel Amsterdam, of heb ik iets gemist? Ook de Telegraaf slaat hier de plank flink mis met de titel ‘Amsterdam wil geen wiet meer verkopen aan toeristen’ van een artikel uit april 2022.

Ik begrijp waarom er maatregelen moeten worden genomen tegen de overlast van drugstoerisme in de stad maar ontken zeker niet de nadelige gevolgen die dit verbod zullen hebben voor vele ondernemers, die toch zeker ook deel uitmaken van wat ik Amsterdam noem.

Als het aan Louis ligt In een gesprek met Louis, werknemer bij coffeeshop Kandinsky in de Lange Brugsteeg, wordt mijn aanname bevestigd. Zeker de helft van de bezoekers van de winkel is toerist, vertelt hij mij: ‘Als we geen wiet meer mogen verkopen aan deze groep, zal een groot deel van onze inkomsten wegvallen.’ Louis is geboren in het Verenigd Koninkrijk maar werkt nu op Schiphol. ‘Ik ben voor de wiet in Amsterdam komen wonen. Als ik het hier niet zou kunnen kopen, was ik wel ergens anders gaan wonen waar het goedkoper is.’ Hij lacht, pakt een half opgerookt jointje op uit de asbak en steekt deze aan met een van de aanstekers die verspreid over de toonbank liggen. Volgens Louis is de wiet dat wat Amsterdam zo een aantrekkelijke stad maakt. Hij verwacht dan ook dat het toerisme en hiermee een deel van de inkomsten van coffeeshops flink zullen afnemen wanneer wiet moeilijker te verkrijgen is. ‘Nou denk ik dat Kandinsky nog wel zou blijven bestaan door onze vaste Amsterdamse gasten, maar het zou zeker een einde betekenen voor

een coffeeshop zoals The Bulldog die volledig draait op inkomsten uit de portemonnees van toeristen. Ik heb nog nooit een Amsterdammer horen zeggen dat ze hun wiet bij The Bulldog halen.’

Wanneer ik Louis vraag of hij weleens last heeft gehad van stonede toeristen in de winkel of op straat, schudt hij zijn hoofd. ‘Het zijn niet de stonede toeristen die overlast veroorzaken maar zij die iets te veel gedronken hebben. Daarom denk ik dan ook dat deze maatregel - lees: het i-criterium - onzin is. Als de politie minder overlast wil, maak dan de verkoop van alcohol aan toeristen verboden.’

Daar ben ik het met Louis eens. Hoe vaak ik wel eens groepen dronken Engelsen met een grote boog voorbij ben gelopen, is niet op twee handen te tellen. Er wordt op straat geplast, luid geschreeuwd en als ze echt in een baldadige bui zijn, gooien ze zo een fiets of twee de gracht in. Dan kom ik toch liever een wegversperrende groep stoners tegen.

Ondanks de meningsverschillen tussen aan de ene kant coffeeshops en aan de andere kant de hogere machten van de stad, laat Halsema in april 2022 toch weten dat de plannen zullen worden doorgezet. Met als gevolg: een tweeëntwintig kantjes tellende brief die dezelfde maand nog bij de burgemeester op de mat valt, ondertekend door de Bond van Cannabis Detaillisten (BCD). In deze brief kondigt de BCD aan dat zij het niet eens zijn met de inhoud van de verstuurde brief van Halsema aan de gemeenteraad.

Halsema heeft de gemeenteraad volgens hen onjuist en onvolledig geïnformeerd wanneer het gaat om de overlast en cannabisindustrie. In het nieuwe coalitieakkoord is er vervolgens geen enkel woord besteed aan het i-criterium, ook geen reactie op de brief van de BCD.

Geen wiet meer voor toeristen, als het aan Amsterdam ligt Als het aan mij ligt Persoonlijk denk ik niet dat de focus moet liggen op het verbieden van de verkoop van cannabis aan toeristen maar dat de aandacht verplaatst moet worden naar het geven van verkeers- en gedragslessen aan deze zelfde groep - stoned of niet. In plaats van geld verliezen aan de illegale markt, kunnen we hiermee zelfs meer verdienen en banen creëren.

Als het aan mij zou liggen zou ik daarentegen wel het aantal coffeeshops terugdringen naar een redelijker aantal en hier - het is maar een idee - sociale huurwoningen van maken.

Helaas ligt het niet aan mij en heb ik ook geen aspiraties om de politiek in te gaan, dus zullen we waarschijnlijk toch aan het i-criterium moeten gaan geloven, alhoewel ik twijfel aan het doorzettingsvermogen van de driehoek, sorry. Daarnaast, heeft de wietpas niet al laten zien dat het i-criterium geen rooskleurige toekomst tegemoet zal gaan? Om het met een positieve notitie af te sluiten: ik denk dat als je vijf euro meer vraagt dan nodig om voor toeristen een wietje te halen in de coffeeshop, dat je wel eens heel rijk kan worden.

Morbid curiosity Reviewing Netflix’s Dark Tourist Series After the opening tune of Netflix fades out, the face of a Louis Theroux lookalike appears on my screen: David Farrier. Filmed from the safety of his own home, David, a journalist from Aotearoa, explains in his opening minute that he is taking the viewer on a journey with him, in search of the ultimate dark tourist experience. Fascinated by the ‘mad, macabre and morbid’, David took me by the hand as he travelled the globe.

stumbled across this trending series by accident, as I was looking for a film starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. What drew me in was the cover picture: an almost mummified face of a deceased woman. Later in the series, the viewer will learn that this is a deceased grandma; she has been in her tomb for 17 years, only to be taken out once a year. In Toraja, Indonesia, washing and grooming the dead is part of funeral rituals. This defines the style David and his crew adopted for their series: luring people in at the beginning of the episode by showing short clips that highlight the bizarre to later explore the story more thoroughly.

First and foremost, David doesn’t do a bad job at all. The series is an entertaining travel documentary, easy to watch with sprinkles of historical and sometimes even anthropological insight. David approaches every single one of his destinations with a frank and open-hearted earnestness; he rarely outright applauds or condemns anyone’s attraction.

As he travels the globe, to different continents and countries, he seeks out experiences that fall under the umbrella term: Dark Tourism.

Maybe some things just should not be identified as Dark Tourism A Big Mystery In an article by Colette Copeland about the aesthetics of Dark Tourism, Philip Stone (a British dark tourism scholar) explains dark tourism as ‘the act to travel to sites associated with death, suffering and seemingly macabre’. This may be my naïve self talking – for you should know: I do not like scary things – but why on earth would one go to a place well known for death in their free time? Surely visiting a still highly radioactive sight or voluntarily submitting to being tortured hardly does any good. This seems to be exactly what David and his crew are off to uncover: the ‘Why?’ behind dark tourism.

Colette Copeland offers a few theories on the ‘Why?’ question. Though scholars disagree about the reasons why there is a global increase in dark tourism since the late 1990s, Copeland does offer some insight on why people partake in dark tourism in the first place. One of the theories is that the events of the Cold War led to a growing interest in commemorations that create a space for reflection and redemption. Thus, this suggests it’s some kind of memorial.

In this perspective, dark tourism is not just for pleasure and the adrenaline thrill. Another theory Copeland describes agrees on the non-pleasure aspect. It stems from a Freudian

discourse: a compulsion to visit sites of trauma for closure and disclosure. Dark tourism would thus keep the memory of trauma alive and in the front of our collective memory.

This can clearly be seen in some scenes of the series. David visits Tomioka; a ghost town in Japan, left lifeless after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. David is affected by the scene and makes sure the viewer is brought back to the reality of the scene as he singles out personal items and children’s toys among the chaos. People have died here, many had to flee their homes: it is a disastrous place, let’s not forget that.

Travel to sites associated with death, suffering and seemingly macabre Grimm Experiences David’s visit to McKamey Manor, the world’s scariest horror house, seems to be on the opposite side of the frame and does not seem to fit into the non-pleasure theories. People voluntarily get tortured at this horror house; is it in order to remember that people have been tortured in the past? Or to remember the fact that people are still being submitted to torture in more than one place on our globe?

The Manor seems to be an activity for just the adrenaline thrill and an ego boost (or a reality check of one’s ego). But perhaps it is to remember. Remembering that you are still alive and that your life is good. As people usually give up their experience in the horror house within 5 minutes, they seem to have found a new appreciation for life. The intense fear they experienced comes to an end and they get to go back to their normal lives. With an additional experience, that over time fades to the back of their mind and becomes a distant memory.

David seems to be addressing different kinds of mad and morbid. He visits South-Africa and meets up with people who are prepping for the end of the world.

Well, the end of their world. According to them, chaos and destruction will come in the form of an uprising among the Black community. These preppers are straight out racist and want to preserve Whiteness in South-Africa. In my eyes, this is a completely different dark tourism compared to visiting vampires in New Orleans, as David did earlier in the series. Whilst eating cake with them, they seem to be in it for the sake of role playing. They find a community and a family through the absurd. Maybe some things just

should not be identified as dark tourism. Certainly, fighting and flaunting in a SS-uniform, re-enacting WOII battles, a gruesome entertainment museum with images and statues of the Ku Klux Klan lynching Afro-American or Nazis assaulting Jewish prisoners in a concentration camp goes too far. I find it revolting, superlative to morbid and definitely not ‘entertainment’.

What seems to be forgotten in seemingly unharmful dark tourism experiences, is the human suffering that took place during these actual (historic) events. Considering the format, David does a good job exposing the bigger story behind the ‘ordinary dark tourist experience’. While visiting Benin, David narrates about the history of Lake Nokoué. The tribe Tofinu took refuge on the lake as they build an island on stilts; away from the slave traders. When visiting Medellín, Colombia, David talks to Escobar’s former hitman, Popeye, addressing the poverty and structural inequalities that go along with violence.

Dark Tourism is not just for pleasure and the adrenaline thrill So, David is not to be blamed for my frustration. What bothers me most is that it is a show about people capitalising off of human tragedy, whilst managing to do exactly the same thing. And I contributed to that. Even though I don’t seem to understand why there is a market for this kind of ‘entertainment’, I did not turn off my computer: I kept watching. Some things I simply find too mad, macabre and morbid. But no one forced me to look. I was outraged, but intrigued. Perhaps just like you are after reading this article: the experience is only a few clicks away. Are you experiencing that same morbid curiosity?

Ieder stadje hetzelfde tasje? de wereld ligt aan haar voeten, maar niemand kent Robin Ruth De eerste koffie van de dag in mijn ene hand, mijn telefoon in de andere. Ik neem een slok en druk op play. Muziek klinkt door mijn noise cancelling koptelefoon terwijl ik door de lawaaierige Damstraat loop. Voor me loopt een groepje van vijf vriendinnen. Eén van hen loopt voorop. Haar zwierige lichtblauwe jurk beweegt mee met de wind, terwijl ze op haar witte sneakers stevig doorloopt. Ze lijkt precies te weten waar ze heen wil.

k hoor haar Britse accent wanneer ze haar vriendinnen de weg wijst. ‘Toeristen’ concludeer ik, al lopen de vrouwen een stuk sneller dan de gemiddelde toerist in Amsterdam, alsof ze een duidelijk doel voor ogen hebben. Maar ik heb haast, dus versnel mijn pas om ze in te halen. En dan, stoppen ze. Alle vijf kijken ze naar rechts en blijven staan. Want daar, daar staat zij: Robin.

Robin doet er alles aan om in het oog te springen Ik zie Robin, zoals de vijf vriendinnen haar ook zien. In de hoek van een klein winkeltje trekt ze onze ogen naar binnen. We kunnen eigenlijk niet meer om haar heen, en niet van haar weg. De drukte van de Damstraat vervaagt naar de achtergrond. Robin trekt de aandacht; ze heeft iets verrassends en speels, en toch ziet ze er ook enigszins bekend en vertrouwd uit. Misschien is ze een tikkeltje ordinair, maar daardoor ook extra aantrekkelijk. De vriendinnen lopen naar binnen, naar haar toe. Het lijkt goed te klikken want al snel hangt Robin verleidelijk om de schouder van de vrouw in de lichtblauwe jurk. Ik blijf van een afstandje kijken, maar loop door wanneer ze samen met haar naar buiten lopen. Wanneer ik achterom kijk, zie ik hoe Robin nog steeds nonchalant om de schouder van de vrouw hangt, die haar dichter tegen zich aandrukt. Robin zal meegaan in het vliegtuig naar huis. Bij haar intrekken. Robin weet dat ze de vrouw zal doen herinneren aan deze dag.

Want dat deed ze eerder, bij al die andere toeristen

die ze verleidde en hen tot de dag van vandaag doet herinneren aan gedenkwaardige reizen uit het verleden.

Ik weet wie ze is, zoals iedereen eigenlijk weet wie ze is. Of ten minste, haar wel herkent.

Al weten velen haar naam niet, ze is overal en ze ontgaat niemand. Zij, is het schatje van ieder stadje. Robin Ruth.

Mijn koffie is op. Ik gooi de to go beker in de prullenbak voor de metrohalte bij de Nieuwmarkt. In de metro denk ik aan haar. Maar, wat weet ik meer van haar dan hoe ze eruitziet; dat befaamde uiterlijk? Weinig. Thuis blijft de nieuwsgierigheid prikkelen. Ik open mijn laptop en de Google zoektocht naar deze mysterieuze beroemdheid begint.

We kunnen eigenlijk niet meer om haar heen, en niet van haar weg Multi multi multi multi national Robin Ruth, haar geboortedatum is onbekend, maar waarschijnlijk kwam ze ter wereld in Amsterdam. Haar vader is Boaz Avrahami, de eigenaar van het grootste ‘toeristen fashion’ bedrijf ter wereld: Robin Ruth. Na vier jaar zonder enig succes stropdassen te verkopen, kwam Boaz in 2002 met het briljante idee om souvenirs te produceren met stedennamen. Hij vernoemde het bedrijf naar zijn eerste dochter om ‘haar reislustige spirit vast te leggen en anderen te inspireren om

Column Al weten velen haar naam niet, ze is overal en ze ontgaat niemand de wereld te verkennen’. Op robin.ruth.com lees ik dat Boaz hoopte dat ‘zijn dochter de wereld zou rondreizen en avonturen zou gaan omarmen met een grenzeloze nieuwsgierigheid’. Of zijn dochter dat inmiddels gedaan heeft weet ik niet.

Wat ze verder doet in het leven en of ze überhaupt nog op deze planeet rondloopt, kom ik ook niet achter. Maar de souvenirs van Robin Ruth worden inmiddels in 82 landen verkocht.

Ik vind Robin Ruth in toeristenwinkels, museumshops, dierentuinen, op vliegvelden en vele andere plekken die toeristen trekken. Vooral de tassen met de Amsterdam Amsterdam Amsterdam Amsterdam of Barcelona Barcelona Barcelona Barcelona (enzovoort) print zijn bekend. In alle grote steden wordt deze tas verkocht, overal met exact hetzelfde ontwerp. Alleen de plaatsnaam verschilt. Het design valt op en mensen over de hele wereld vinden de tas hun geld waard, maar toch voelt het ontwerp ook wat ‘te veel’. Het lettertype op de tas is lelijker dan Comic Sans: te speels en te schreeuwerig en vaak elk woord in een andere kleur. En niet alleen tassen worden versierd met de eindeloze herhaling van plaatsnamen. De toeristenwinkel waar ik vanochtend voor stond, verkoopt naast tassen ook mutsen, oorwarmers, petten, sleutelhangers, truien, nekkussens, sokken, paraplu’s, slippers, mokken en magneten van het miljoenenbedrijf.

Robin doet er alles aan om in het oog te springen, wat haar tegelijkertijd aantrekkelijk en afstotelijk maakt. Niet gek dat Robin alle aandacht opslokte van de toeristen die voor mij liepen.

Opgemerkt onzichtbaar Ook op de website lijkt Robin te willen pronken met haar stijl: #BeNoticed luidt de slogan van het bedrijf. Wanneer ik scrol over de pagina’s, krijg ik de vraag gesteld: ‘Zou het niet slim zijn om ontwerpen te hebben die leuk zijn om te dragen en alsnog dezelfde trots laten zien van het ontdekken van een nieuwe coole stad of uniek land?’ Ik denk er een moment over na. ‘Dezelfde trots’ wijst op een vergelijking: ‘Dezelfde trots als…’. Waarbij de puntjes waarschijnlijk kunnen worden ingevuld met ‘het standaard souvenir’.

Maar wat is zo’n souvenir? Een souvenir is voor de meeste mensen een object om een herinnering vast te houden. Ze representeren daarmee een plaats, een ervaring of een cultuur. Zo suggereert een souvenir authenticiteit en lokaliteit, en dat terwijl veel souvenirs in grote hoeveelheden geproduceerd worden op een andere locatie dan waar ze verkocht worden. Dat is in principe wat Robin Ruth doet met hun ‘zelfde tasje voor ieder stadje’. Maar, volgens het bedrijf, is de tas naast een souvenir dus ook een uniek mode-object waarmee de consument zal opvallen en de show zal stelen.

Online is Robin Ruth #UnNoticed, een raadsel Robin Ruth zal gezien worden en in het middelpunt van de aandacht staan. #BeNoticed is het motto. Waarom vind ik online dan niks meer dan de informatie die op de site van het bedrijf staat? Niet over het bedrijf, niet over de dochter van oprichter Boaz Avrahami. De meest willekeurige objecten of fenomenen hebben anno 2022 een Wikipedia-pagina, zoals: ‘veterstrikdiploma’, ‘krokettenmotie’ en ‘Avril Lavigne replacement theory’ , maar de grootste souvenirproducent ter wereld ontbreekt in de online encyclopedie. Ook Google News en Google Scholar leveren geen verdere informatie op dan het feit dat Robin Ruth een hoofdkantoor heeft op 5th Avenue en een geschatte jaarlijkse omzet heeft van 7,8 miljoen dollar. En Instagram? Ja, er is een Robin Ruth Instagram-pagina maar het volgersaantal staat maar op 6171 volgers en de laatst geposte foto van vier weken geleden heeft wel geteld achttien likes.

Online is Robin Ruth #UnNoticed, een raadsel.

Al is dat misschien zo gek nog niet. Want wat is de relevantie van souvenirs in de omgeving van het internet? Modieus of niet, een souvenir is in de essentie nauw verbonden met een plek in de fysieke wereld. Een Amsterdam Amsterdam Amsterdam Amsterdam tas bestel je niet online.

Op het internet, verliest het zogezegd modieuze souvenir aan betekenis.

Heathrow Airport. Samen met de toeristen verlaat ze het vliegtuig. Noem haar Robin Ruth, of noem haar Robin. Een merkwaardige verschijning die je niet ontgaat, maar vervolgens negeert omdat ze een cliché geworden is. Niemand zal tijd besteden aan het oprichten van een Robin Ruth Wikipediapagina, of - tot nu toe - een artikel over haar schrijven. Een cliché, maar toch eigen en speciaal.

Want de herinnering, de nostalgie, die ze oproept bij iedere toerist is altijd uniek persoonlijk.

Walk of shame, walk of joy Een week toeristisch wandelen Een uitpuilende rugzak voorop je buik, rolkoffers over een stenen pad dat de wielen zal gaan verpesten, veel te luid Amerikaans gelach en in een grote groep het gekleurde parapluutje volgen.

Toeristen die wandelend een stad verkennen lopen maar al te vaak in de weg. Toch vind ik het zelf heerlijk om al wandelend op vakantie een buurt te verkennen. Zonder enige haast.

anneer mensen mij een tip vragen voor leuke activiteiten in Amsterdam zeg ik meestal ‘wandelen’. Het kost je niets, je hoeft niet in de rij te staan en je ervaart de mooie stad in alle rust. Er zijn dagen in mijn leven dat ik niet wandel. Ik loop misschien wel, van mijn voordeur naar mijn fiets of van de bar naar het terras tijdens mijn werk als serveerster, maar ik wandel niet. Wandelen is een vrijetijdsactiviteit, lopen is een noodzaak. Als ik fiets door de stad op weg naar een afspraak, doorkruis ik de straten in grote haast. Vaak neem ik dezelfde route langs luxe appartementen en groene parken aan de Weteringschans zonder erbij stil te staan hoe mooi het eigenlijk is. Totdat ik door het centrum fiets en mensen het fietspad blokkeren omdat ze een foto willen maken van mijn dagelijkse omgeving, en totdat ik met mijn Cul-collega’s toeristje speel in onze eigen stad.

De wandelende toerist in eigen land Maandag 4 juli 13:21, Zeedijk Met mijn Cul-collega’s maak ik een foto van een hond uit een raam op de Zeedijk. Als start van Cul’s toeristische week in Amsterdam spelen we Crazy 88, met als doel om zoveel mogelijk van de 44 (twee teams met 44 opdrachten maken die 88) opdrachten door de stad heen te voltooien. Een van de opdrachten is om een foto te maken samen met een dier. De restauranteigenaren aan beide kanten van de straat beginnen over ons te roddelen.

‘Ze maken een foto van je hond’, zegt de vrouw van het restaurant tegenover het huis in een plat Amsterdams accent. Het baasje van de hond, een man, kijkt omhoog naar zijn hond en dan naar ons.

‘Ja, dit is echt een beetje een toeristische attractie.

Eigenlijk zou ik vijf euro moeten vragen iedere keer dat iemand een foto maakt’. Ineens ben ik, als geboren en getogen Amsterdammer, toegerekend tot de groep van toeristen. Bijna wil ik de caféhouders onderbreken en iets terugzeggen in het Nederlands, maar wat heeft het voor zin?

Je wandelt en maakt een foto van een toeristische attractie: je transformeert in een toerist.

Ineens word ik, als geboren en getogen Amsterdammer toegerekend tot toerist Woensdag 6 juli 14:12, Haarlemmerdijk Door te wandelen kom ik ineens achter dingen die er altijd al waren, maar waar ik nooit de aandacht voor had. Zo kom ik achter het bestaan van een engel verborgen tussen de bomen, op de hoek van de Singel en de Haarlemmerdijk. Op dezelfde Haarlemmerdijk staat ook het West-Indisch Huis: het voormalig kantoor van de West Indische Compagnie dat

nu een grand café is. We staan in een groepje voor het gebouw terwijl we uitleg krijgen over de geschiedenis van het gebouw van een van onze Cul-schrijvers, Islay Kilgannon. Normaal fiets ik hier snel langs, maar nu hebben we de tijd om binnen een kijkje te nemen. Er hangen platen aan de muur waarop informatie staat over de geschiedenis van het gebouw. Zo blijkt dat het gebouw de plek is waar de West Indische Compagnie in 1625 de opdracht gaf een fort te bouwen op het eiland Manhattan, dat later uit zou groeien tot New York City. De WIC was echter actief in de slavenhandel en met het geld van de slavernij konden ze de bouw van fort Manhattan bekostigen. Waar mensen nu in het café aan de trendy rosé en mosselen zitten, werd vroeger vergaderd over de handel van mensen.

Ik vraag me af hoeveel toeristen en locals zich beseffen wat deze historische plek betekent. Als toerist kun je de tijd nemen om je te verdiepen in de geschiedenis van de plek waar je bent, maar waarom doe ik dat dan niet als lokale bewoner? Pas wanneer je weg bent van je dagelijkse routine, lijk je je te kunnen verdiepen.

Wandelen is een vrijetijdsactiviteit, lopen een noodzaak

Woensdag 13 juli, Carrousel op Piazza Della Republicca in Florence, Italië 00:12 Op weg naar de Florentijnse versie van het Museumplein, waar onder andere kunstgalerie Uffizi en Palazzo Vecchio te vinden zijn, hoor ik ineens nostalgische muziek. Het is een draaimolen! Ik kijk mijn vriendin aan. Zullen we er ingaan? Ik sta mezelf toe van het gebaande pad af te gaan en weer eventjes kind te zijn, omgeven door glimmende carrouselpaarden. Wandelen maakt je bewust van je omgeving: het is net meer dan stilstaan, net genoeg verplaatsing om actief deel uit te kunnen maken van de buurt. Ik kan langs een draaimolen lopen en zomaar besluiten erin te gaan, een dynamische vrijheid die niet te vinden is in andere vormen van jezelf vervoeren.

Ik schaam me om als toerist rond te lopen, maar tegelijkertijd is het alles waar ik naar lijk te verlangen. Om te verdwalen, te verwonderen. Toeristen kennen de stad vaak op andere manieren dan locals. In Florence tref ik zelden Italianen in de restaurantjes en musea die ik bezoek en in Amsterdam kun je mij niet te vinden op plekken als de Heineken Experience, het Achterhuis of het Van Gogh Museum. Door te wandelen als toerist kun je je eigen stad op nieuwe manieren leren kennen.

Maar ook zonder toerist te zijn is wandelen heerlijk doelloos. Waarom zou je een tour maken in het verre buitenland als er in je eigen buurt nog zoveel pareltjes te ontdekken zijn? Je ziet vanzelf wel of er iets leuks te zien (of te horen, ruiken, of ervaren) valt. Het is een kleine ontsnapping aan de dagelijkse routine. Stap af van je fiets, check uit van het openbaar vervoer en maak een wandeling.

Neem de tijd voor je omgeving en jezelf. Verwonder je.

De wandelende toerist in het buitenland Dinsdag 12 juli, Tramhalte Unità, Florence, Italië 00:12 Ik kom middernacht aan in Florence. Rakketakketak, klinken de wielen van mijn koffer over de straten. Het geluid laat me ineenkrimpen. Zeer zeker worden mijn vriendin en ik nu niet aangezien voor locals. Vreselijk! Natuurlijk ben ik in Italië een toerist, maar niemand anders hoeft dat te weten. Ik vind het gênant om geen kennis te hebben van de plek waar ik ben, om luidruchtig te zijn, een schaapje in de kudde. Als ik een toerist ben, ga ik op zoek naar authentieke ervaringen. Ik ben geen Instagram tourist die er alleen maar op uit is om mooie foto’s te maken. Ik maak eerder foto’s van de mensen die een foto maken van De geboorte van Venus. Ik

Made so many connections. #doing_my_part’. You sigh, and scroll some more.

e know it as ‘voluntourism’, by no means a totally destructive venture, yet it can certainly turn sour when done in a hasty fashion. The most common form of ‘voluntourism’ exists as the widely known and somewhat elusive ‘gap year’.

This consists of a year or longer where young people take the time to ‘find themselves’ either before or after their higher education. You may read this and say ‘Hey, that’s me’ or adversely snicker at the prospect of a gap year entirely.

Regardless of affiliation, gap years exist, and money-grabbing volunteer tourism exists right along with it.

A bit of tact can go a long way The Good Volunteering has always been a revered profession or hobby, and for good reason. There are countless institutions and projects built from the ground up in order to genuinely help and better the lives of humans, turtles and honeybees alike. In violent and poverty stricken areas it is imperative that there is a flow of well rested volunteers ready to take on the task of helping. Voluntourism gives youth a platform through which to join in and give something back to the world. No doubt a fulfilling and world-building endeavour. It gives young people a chance to travel and find things out for themselves.

For many of the young kids joining these programmes, it will be their first exposure to extreme poverty, famine or the truly scary effects of climate change. All of which will be relayed back to their peers and in turn hopefully instigate change. Also, at the beginning of many of these programmes, training about cultural sensitivity and White saviourism takes place to keep selfie-seekers shamed enough that they do not use the experience as a stepping stool in their own societies. However, this training is not exactly followed up on and only truly self-reflective people will take it to heart. This brings me to my next points.

This price tag takes into account accommodation, medical needs, mental health aids and other field expenses of the volunteers. This creates an inherent wealth gap stacked against those who can afford it and those who cannot. Further enhancing this gap is the uneven spread of how charity money is used. Namely how little of the donations is invested into benefiting the projects. In our world today, more wealthy (White) people can afford to go on excursions, dubbed ‘poverty tourism’, than any other group. It is especially concerning that gapyear voluntourists are taking on teaching and building jobs when they are unskilled in the profession. The problematic imagery that comes with these adventures is what critics of these programmes base their viewpoint on: hiring a volunteer should come with proof of credentials, not just skin colour and a high school diploma. The neo-colonial White saviour practices that these programmes are propagating are eerily reminiscent of the ‘civilising’ missions of forefathers lost in the passage of time. Charity work done in this manner can always have the drawback of creating more harm than good. A bit of tact can go a long way. This idiom can only be applied to the programmes that truly create a change in the communities they are based in.

the_gap_year Don’t fall for dark patterns of history And the Ugly People, me included, love to think of themselves as altruistic human beings. Even though time and time again, studies have proved that there is no such thing. Volunteer work can be fulfilling, but without addressing the imbalance of wellbeing and safety in the world, it becomes a cheap attempt at making oneself feel good for a while. Disembodied teaching of English for two months in an ‘African’ village does not make substantial differences in the lives of far-away children. In fact, the abrupt entrance and subsequent removal of a parental figure will create distress when it inevitably happens. It transforms the volunteer into a warped version of a coloniser wearing Toms. I do not believe that these gap-year kids are doing it on purpose, as these short-term programmes are made to create a ‘bang-for-buck’ experience.

But I do believe that these people are being scammed.

Scammed of their money and scammed of their dignity. This dignity is in question due to the multitude of voluntourism scandals. An example being the shelter building volunteer programmes where gap year goers build houses as a part of their NGO work. Volunteers work some hours a day, making little progress while the NGO arranges for under-paid night builders to come and fix the build. This orchestrated experience is a great example of the redundancy of these programmes. Just pay the workers and let them do the job properly. Why are NGOs indulging the pimpled faces of rich teenagers? Alright, let’s say it is impossible to fund these charities without the participation of the volunteers, the programmes could at least give these near-adults a full briefing of what goes on in these communities instead of selectively sharing bits of information and locations. More scandals can be seen in the mismanaging of donations: an example being orphanages not distributing toys to the children because if the volunteers would see them playing, they would stop donating. This was a testimony of a person speaking to Vice about her own experience with volunteering abroad, as part of an expose on the brutal realities of voluntourism. Most shockingly, she mentions that many human trafficking rings operate from such voluntourist organizations. She warned against the participation in these programmes and urged the viewers to see the money-making scam for what it is.

Scammed of their money and scammed of their dignity The Showdown The showdown I propose is to hold charities and NGOs accountable for their misconduct. I ask for better sensitivity training to ensure privileged people are self-aware and act accordingly. I also call for a more efficient and fair budgeting system that puts the needs of the people they are there to help above the needs of rich, unqualified teenagers who are there for the summer. The sensitivity training needs to regularly be followed up on; connecting to individuals while volunteering for a couple of months does not stop when you leave. Once you have touched a life, you are tethered through a bond. People will remember you even if you forget them.

This should be the mindset of volunteers everywhere. Once these changes happen, go volunteer. But don’t fall for scams, or even worse, dark patterns of history.

anneer mijn plakkerige en zweterige vingertoppen tegen het glas van mijn telefoon tikken om weer eens een foto te nemen, besef ik mij na enige tijd dat de meeste van mijn vakantiefoto’s waardeloos zijn. Ik let niet op het licht, de diepte verhoudingen en de langslopende mensen op de achtergrond tijdens het maken van het kiekje. Toch ervaar ik een bepaalde behoefte om momenten goed vast te leggen, zeker als ik op vakantie ben.

Het idee van een foto nemen om een specifiek moment niet te vergeten, of in scène te zetten, is verrassend omdat het totaal niet overeenkomt met de werkelijkheid waarin we het moment ervaren hebben. De geur van het eten kunnen we niet ruiken, het geluid dat we horen vervalt in stilte, het proeven en het voelen komen samen in een gekaderde rechthoek. Met een foto kunnen we het zien, maar niet daadwerkelijk ervaren. En toch, als ik naar een vakantiefoto kijk, komen er herinneringen naar boven die mij weer doen denken aan het heerlijke eten, de drukte van

alle geluiden in een restaurant of de geur van het bezwete lichaam naast mij. Dit maakt een foto niet plat, gekaderd of stil, maar juist een oase aan herinneringen, als een souvenir van een bepaald moment.

Net zoals je brein een bepaalde grens aan geheugen kent, heeft mijn telefoon ook geen eindeloze opslag. Het vastleggen van momenten kent helaas z’n grenzen. Bij de laatste klik van de tien foto’s die ik maak, springt er een pop-up op: ‘opslagruimte is vol’. Hoewel ik tien foto’s heb genomen van bijna precies dezelfde situatie, krijg ik toch het idee dat er geen enkele in de (digitale) prullenbak mag verdwijnen. Of kost het misschien net wat te veel moeite om door elke foto te scrollen om te kijken wat nou het perfecte kiekje is?

De pop-ups blijven komen. Het is nu echt tijd om er een paar te verwijderen. Vroeger had je een aantal rolletjes die vol konden raken of was het kaartje van de camera vol.

Dan moest je bewuster kiezen op welk moment je precies een foto wilde nemen en hoeveel. Dat is nu wel anders met het oneindig ogende geheugen. Tegenwoordig lijkt het namelijk alsof ik kan blijven klikken om elk moment vast te leggen.

Dit is echter een wolk van illusie, genaamd de cloud, waarvan de meeste mensen geen idee hebben wat het nou werkelijk is. Door foto’s niet in de cloud te zetten, loop ik het risico dat ze in z’n geheel verdwijnen.

Door te scrollen langs de ‘mislukte’ en ‘gelukte’ vakantiefoto’s, vind ik echter een nieuwe waardering voor alle imperfecte kiekjes. De reis richting het perfecte plaatje roept even veel herinneringen op als het kiekje zelf. Dit zorgt ervoor dat voor de honderden vakantiefoto’s op een of andere manier extra schijfruimte wordt gevonden. Het weggooien van kiekjes is dus iets wat ik (vooral) probeer te vermijden.

Mijn kiekjes zijn voor mij waardevolle kliekjes.

y savings account pathetically stares back at me from my screen, blinking the same number at me as it did last week, minus the money I needed for groceries. This amount is supposed to grant me several small holidays during my post-bachelor year of freedom. I flick back to the checkout page of the cheapest airline tickets I could find, my chest tightening at the realisation that now I will actually have to spend my hard-earned money. Am I really doing this? So many shifts, so much free time I handed in, in order to get some free time, in return, away from home? A text comes in from a friend, asking if I’ve already completed my purchase and if I am ‘ready for a fun holiday’. God, the pressure. What

if I accidentally clicked the wrong destination? I’ll triplecheck whether the dates are right, one second. I didn’t pick a seat by an emergency exit, right? That would be way too much pressure. Oh god, what if we die on the way? All that money spent for nothing. After ten minutes of checking and freaking out, my friends sends a follow-up question-mark.

Right. Nothing more to check, I guess? I squeeze my eyes shut and click. The confirmation comes through. I check again.

My schedule for the coming weeks is packed with more shifts to at least have some money to spend at the destinations, so I decided I might as well already start packing.

Three weeks in advance. Piles of clothes are surrounding my backpack – never a suitcase, my face is already red at the thought of the loud sounds wheels make on uneven tiles. My cat is innocently blinking up at me from the top of one pile, entirely oblivious of my internal freak-out. Why is there no weather predicted yet? Sure, it might be three weeks from now, but surely they can already make a prediction? I’ll just pack everything, I guess. Sweaters, shorts, sunscreen, thick socks. Piles after piles of clothes and cosmetics disappear into my bag, somehow fitting in like I’m the Mary Poppins of holidays. I desperately push down on my bag to zip it up.

When I look around my room, my anxiety slowly settling, I realise my cat is nowhere to be seen. Fuck, did he run away?

Oh my God, what if I accidentally packed him? Cue stress sweats as I unzip my bag, pulling out the carefully folded clothes. A meow rings from the bathroom. Right. That makes more sense.

As I wait for my bag to go through airport security, my heart starts pounding in my throat. I walk through the metal detector, praying that someone didn’t sneak illegal drugs into my waistband while I wasn’t looking and that I didn’t accidentally stash my suitcase with cocaine and knives instead of socks. Five minutes later, I shove my feet back into my shoes and grab my bag from the conveyor-belt, having survived yet another near-fatal self-induced panic moment.

Surely, the worst stress is now over. All that’s left to do is to spend weeks at a new place where I don’t speak the language and don’t know anyone! Let the relaxing holiday begin.

Trouw-toerisme De behoefte aan ontsnapping van het kersverse bruidspaar ‘En? Wanneer is de grote dag?’

In het voorjaar sta ik in de rij bij juwelier Lyppens, hartje Amsterdam. De winkel is gevestigd in een zijsteeg van het Rokin en straalt een eeuwige kerstsfeer uit. Groen fluwelen banken, goudgele lampen en vitrines met daarin perfect gepolijst zilver en goud. Sieraden met onzichtbare prijskaartjes schitteren achter dubbelglas. Het is een snoepwinkel voor volwassenen.

‘Over twee weken is het zo ver,’ antwoordt de man naast me, terwijl de vrouw achter de toonbank zijn verlovingsring inpakt: ‘Dan vraag ik mijn vriendin ten huwelijk op een Spaans strand.’

‘Op zo’n plek kán ze bijna niet weigeren!’ lacht de vrouw. Daar is alles mee gezegd.

iet ver van de juwelier, met name op het Leidseplein, het Rembrandtplein en op de Wallen, aanschouw ik, vaker dan me lief is, een ander schouwspel. Ook gelieerd aan het huwelijk, maar iets minder chique dan de verloving: de bachelorparty. Laveloze toeristen met kroontjes op en sjerpen om, in onesies of in piemelpak. Voor één laatste avond volledig gek kunnen doen: Amsterdam leent zich er perfect voor. Niet té gek natuurlijk, de levenspartner is al gekozen, de verloving is rond en de trouwerij staat voor de deur. En toch moet er nog één keer afzonderlijk van elkaar gefeest worden.

Het is een illusie dat de aanstaande bruid of bruidegom voor één avond weer vrijgezel is, maar wellicht is dat juist de kern van de traditie: een illusie in stand houden. Afreizen naar het buitenland, afstand nemen van de realiteit, nog even het getrouwde leven niet onder ogen komen. Het klinkt bijna als een ontsnapping aan de werkelijkheid, terwijl deze werkelijkheid juist zo bewust omarmd is. Wie niet wil trouwen en zijn vrijgezelle vrijheid wil behouden, zegt toch simpelweg nee?

‘We ‘bout to get mortal!’ hoor ik de verkleedde Britten in de Lange Leidsedwarsstraat roepen. De groep gaat joelend een karaokebar in, terwijl voorbijgangers ze lachend aanschouwen. De traditie mag dan paradoxaal zijn, er is blijkbaar grote behoefte aan.

Laveloze toeristen, met kroontjes op en sjerpen om, in onesie of piemelpak De reis die het huwelijk heet Wie elkaar het ja-woord geeft, belooft - naast een aantal handige juridische zaken - het leven voorgoed met de ander te delen. In voor- en tegenspoed. Tot de dood ons scheidt. Het is een grootse belofte en wordt daarom ook groots gevierd. De gemiddelde Nederlander geeft vijftienduizend euro uit aan het trouwcircus en alles wat daarbij komt kijken. Plechtige ceremonies, door de lucht vliegende boeketten, diners met meerdere gangen. Aangeschoten speeches, plateau’s met

mini-hapjes, feesten tot diep in de nacht. Vuurwerk, toeters, bellen, en dan wordt het bruidspaar uitgezwaaid. Op naar… ja, waar naartoe eigenlijk? Naar de rest van hun leven samen?

Uiteraard. Maar: eerst maar weer op reis! Tijdschrift ELLE geeft haar lezers een top vijf aan huwelijksreisbestemmingen: het eiland Capri, Costa Rica, Nieuw Zeeland, Panama en Bali. Mooi weer, fijne witte stranden en vooral lekker ver weg van het dagelijkse leven. Niet voor niets noemt men de eerste weken na de bruiloft de ‘wittebroodsweken’.

Deze term is afkomstig uit de zeventiende eeuw, waarin de traditie gold dat pasgetrouwde stellen wekenlang wit brood aten. Een luxegoed, gezien het dagelijkse brood toendertijd roggebrood was zonder tarwe. Dat witte brood wordt nu

In Depth vervangen door Italiaanse truffelpasta of Balinese acaï bowls, maar de betekenis van het woord dekt nog steeds de lading.

Het is de tijd waarin ‘het huwelijk vooral nog een feestelijk aanzien heeft’ en duurt gemiddeld zo’n vier tot zes weken.

Wordt het koppel daarna wakker, op een regenachtige dinsdagochtend, wanneer het wc-papier op is en de wifi het niet doet? Wellicht eindigen de wittebroodsweken met het besef dat het grootste deel van het huwelijk zich vooral zal afspelen aan het thuisfront, in plaats van als ‘globetrottende’ trouw-toerist. Dat de grootste reis die je met je partner maakt juist het dagelijkse samenzijn is, en niet alleen de avontuurlijke uitschieters omhelst.

Het kiezen voor elkaar gaat blijkbaar gepaard met weg willen zijn, met roze wolken opzoeken en hier zo lang mogelijk op blijven zitten. Hoe is dit zo gekomen?

We zijn ‘relatiemaximalisten’ geworden, stelt neurowetenschapper Jeroen van Baar in zijn boek De Prestatiegeneratie. We groeien op met een enorme keuzevrijheid wat betreft opleidingen en beroepen, maar ook wat betreft onze (romantische) relaties. Deze vrijheid kan positief bijdragen aan de persoonlijke ontwikkeling, maar kan ook leiden tot een groeiende onzekerheid. Wie en wat is nu de beste keuze? Is het gras niet toch groener aan de overkant?

Zo optimaliseren en maximaliseren we ons leven: iedere keuze die we maken, moet leiden tot de beste uitkomst.

Loopt dit anders, dan is er blijkbaar verkeerd gekozen en gaan we terug naar start. De meest romantische verloving, de meest feestelijke bruiloft en de meest extravagante huwelijksreis maken dat de gemaakte partnerkeuze voelt als de béste keuze. ‘Op zo’n plek kán ze bijna niet weigeren!’, aldus de vrouw die de verlovingsring verkocht.

Het is treurig dat het eigen gras, wanneer het laagje klatergoud eraf is, bij zoveel mensen toch verdort. Gemiddeld gaat veertig procent van de getrouwde stellen in Nederland uiteindelijk scheiden. Wat begon op het parelwitte strand, eindigt in een gestrand huwelijksbootje.

You do you!

Of ik zelf ooit wil trouwen, weet ik nog niet - net als veel andere redactieleden van de Cul. In een uitgelaten Reguliersdwarsstraat bespreken we het fenomeen op het terras. Voor één avond spelen we toerist in onze eigen stad en doen we alsof we op een Bachelorette zijn. De vrouw naast ons gelooft ons op ons woord en geeft een waardevol advies mee: ‘I just came off my brother’s wedding, and it was way too much. Everything they did was to stick to the status quo and show off. Just do what you like, and you will have the best wedding.’

Om te voorkomen dat je na de wittebroodsweken wakker wordt in een roggebrood-realiteit die je niet aanstaat, zou ik het advies van deze vrouw willen meegeven en willen zeggen: you do you, dát is jouw beste keuze. Deze hangt niet af van uiterlijke factoren als bombastische bruiloften en exotische huwelijksreizen, maar vooral van het innerlijke gevoel voor elkaar. Zolang dat goed zit, zal er altijd een stukje roze wolk zijn om op te verblijven. Fixt één de wifi, haalt de ander wc-papier, komt alles vanzelf goed.

Taking a trip Mundane and mystical psychedelic experiences There are many trips which tourists could choose to embark on in Amsterdam, including those induced by psychedelics. Psilocybin truffles are legally available in ’smart shops’ throughout Amsterdam and typically provide around six hours of otherworldly experience or simply a heightened enjoyment of nature. Amidst the growth of capitalist and healing interests in psychedelics, three friends* living in Amsterdam have shared their personal experiences with psilocybin, whether for art, self-acceptance, or pleasure. *Due to the stigmatisation attached to drug use, pseudonyms have been used.

want to begin by confessing I have taken psilocybin truffles annually around my birthday for the past five years. During trips, I have found that many culturally ingrained beliefs melt away, making the world feel more vibrant, expansive, and free. Psychedelics allowed me to see more potential in myself, leading towards art, anthropology, and eventually these interviews. Many people who have experienced psychedelic trips state that it cannot be fully explained with words. Thankfully, Javier, Alec, and James do their best to describe some of their psychedelic trips. In doing so they hope to contribute towards the destigmatisation of drug usage and share memorable psychedelic experiences.

Javier, 23, he/him Javier’s first experience with psilocybin was disappointing, eating truffles in Amsterdam that had no noticeable effect.

His psychedelic experiences since have typically occurred in a recreational group setting, often at a party. Javier has a deep interest in using psilocybin for healing purposes. He grows his own psilocybin mushrooms, enjoying the ‘personalisation of the process.’ He mainly uses them for microdosing, including while writing his thesis, which was related to the criminalisation of drugs. He described an initial hesitancy, stating that: ‘this could be like a really cathartic and healing experience, but I also need to be prepared for any trauma in my life ‘cause it might come up, and set me back for a long time.’ This awareness that psychedelics can act ‘like a slap in the face,’ is why the mindset and setting are so important.

During a depressed period last year, he experienced his most powerful trip yet.

‘I remember laying down and feeling like my consciousness was leaving my body. This time was quite significant for me because I kind of was forced out of it and I even felt awesome, like it wasn’t scary at all. I just clicked out, and this is so corny, but I felt the third eye opening at the back of my head, like I have a light that opens up and maybe that’s when I leave. It felt like a room, or in my mind was a room and in theory it had four walls or a certain constraint, but I couldn’t actually see it. It was at the same time as infinite as the universe and endless, but I remember knowing, or someone telling me that it was the point in time and space where people and things are born, let’s say where the soul goes to the body. And I have been brought back here to where my breathmoment happened, where my soul left this room-like space. I’m lying there naked, and I remember seeing my body and I have no tattoos. It’s still my adult grown-up body but there were no tattoos. It was and wasn’t me. I am me because of the constructs and the choices I’ve made, and the other things that have been

inflicted on me and the things that I’ve done because of my name.

I am Javier. I have this identity that has been created in this current world. Even though I don’t personally believe in a soul, it felt very real. I see this naked South American woman and she tells me in a South American accent in Spanish “This is your body.

Take care of it” And this was the end of the trip. At the time I was going through all these different things related to my health. That was probably the best experience I’ve ever had in psychedelics or on any drugs really. I felt content with just being, not having to have an ultimate purpose and I felt grateful for the little things’

During these moments, he has experienced a peeling back of layers, confronting him at times with heartbreaks, physical insecurities, his relationship with his father and his own body. However, it is important to state that this has not been a replacement for medication and consistent mental health treatment.

‘I had that process of looking in the mirror and hating the person you’re seeing and the psychedelics definitely started the process.

But the problem for me personally, is I would need to take them consistently for that to persist. I learned a lot of valuable lessons and I still plan to keep taking psychedelics. But for me, what I actually did to get out of that self-hatred was really taking meds for the first time’ While there have been benefits to Javier’s psilocybin experiences, he acknowledges that it is more important to take his medication, which means he cannot currently take psychoactive substances, prompting a roughly year-long break from psychedelics.

feelings and I burst out crying and I cried so hard, and I felt like every pain in my body. I’m very used to feeling overwhelmed, but it made it overwhelming in a way that was perfect. I didn’t realise how much I was hiding from myself, so that exposed certain things I’d been suppressing for a really long time and also I didn’t realise how much it was affecting me until I heard myself crying hysterically and then I went back and I expressed my feelings and everyone hugged me and it was really beautiful and we were all there for each other. It’s something I’ve carried through with me every day’ Alec found psilocybin created a space for recognition, forgiveness, and acceptance. Trips may cause rushing thoughts, mirroring an experience common among neurodiverse people, such as Alec. They stated that during a trip it was much easier to accept the rush of information in an open and loving way.

‘The first time I tripped on psilocybin, I realised how much I didn’t love myself, like how much I thought that I loved myself, but I realised it was very hollow. It was very surface level, like I wasn’t really loving myself. I went back to my room to get some stuff and I just sat on my sofa and let myself be with myself and feeling the

‘The funny thing is that I feel rushing thoughts every day. and sometimes they go so fast I can’t take it in. When this happens on a daily basis it’s exhausting, and I feel like I have so much potential, and it puts me in a bad place sometimes. but when I was on ‘shrooms and this happened it was a much more positive experience. It’s like I have all these things happening in my mind, I’m capable of thinking all these things. That’s a beautiful thing and part of the process of letting it go is magical. I think it’s easy to get overwhelmed with emotion of so many thoughts passing through me when I’m sober’ Alongside Alec’s still and introspective trips, they have also been climbing, skinny dipping and have formed an even deeper appreciation of jazz music.

‘I remember listening to jazz and thinking about the incredibility of that type of music and the history that it has, the power behind it, and the thinking when people play. They’re literally opening up their souls to the world, and they’re letting people into that through music, and I imagined people’s souls reverberating out of their body with the music to touch people’s hearts and that’s amazing. That’s what art is.’

James, 33, he/him In contrast to Javier and Alec’s desire for a deep introspective healing experience, James’ experiences with psilocybin have been more hedonistic. While his last trip was over five years ago, James has embarked on approximately forty trips since he was a teenager. These all occurred in group recreational settings, including festivals, house parties, and camping trips. James is from Arizona and due to an older drinking age in the United States, he believes it increases the usage of illegal drugs such as cannabis and psilocybin mushrooms among teenagers. Being able to drive at sixteen made psilocybin camping trips a popular activity among his friends. Cannabis and psilocybin appealed as cost-effective.

‘It was cheaper than going to the movies with six people.’

His mother was also open to ‘natural’ substances, stating ‘no pills, no powders’ due to their unpredictability. Instead, she advised ‘be safe, don’t drive, call me if you need to call.’ This parental support created a safe environment for exploration, and James practised careful limits to dosage, always ‘taking less than they thought they wanted.’ His first experience was spontaneous and joyful.

‘We were going to a Primus concert and we’re in line and my friend goes: I have a big bag of mushrooms and we have to eat them all before we get to the front because we can’t bring them in. So, I was like what are mushrooms like? And nobody has

ever done them, but everyone is game, so the first time you eat mushrooms it’s a horrible experience because it’s disgusting. It’s the most vile tasting thing I’ve ever had. You definitely get a lot of nausea at the start. Typically within 30 minutes it passes and then you are high. So I was at that concert, aged like sixteen, seventeen, a big outdoor amphitheatre thing. So, we get to the front and Primus is also a very psychedelic show. I got sucked into this whole whirlwind of music and intensity and I’m smashed up against the railing so much that I could lift my feet. I didn’t realise I was nowhere near my friends. I enjoyed the feeling of not knowing what was going on, pretty much in any sense. The music combined with the concert lighting and the costumes they were wearing just went into a full overload of sensations and trance and I just enjoyed it. I saw a lot of fractals and visuals coming off the laser light and the shine from the instruments, the vibrations from the drums. I couldn’t see anything but the stage and really lost my mind and just kind of let go and enjoyed it. I didn’t notice anybody around me, didn’t notice that I couldn’t put my feet down. I was just sitting there floating at the front.’

James’ other stories centre around music events and camping trips with friends. He camped in both desert and forest locations in Arizona, forming striking natural backdrops for psychedelic experiences. Although he has not experienced any ‘bad trips’, he has witnessed a friend strip off and run naked through a town centre leading to a night in a local jail. He has also trip-sat for multiple friends and stated that mashed potatoes are a great comfort food for calming people down who are struggling with the loss of control.

While not seeking any introspective or healing experiences, James has been changed by some of his experiences. On one trip, aged around nineteen, he describes watching himself interact with other people.

‘I floated spectrally above and watched the entertainment unfold.

I realised that the way I interact with people is different than how I think and what one person is experiencing is different than the person next to them. I think about everybody with a bit more empathy.’

The shift inwards (or outside oneself ) initiated

by psilocybin has the potential to shake off our societal preconceptions and re-experience the world anew, without ego.

‘It’s such a human conception to try to keep this beautiful thing the same, whereas it’s also even more beautiful, in the fact that it opens up. It’s a nice analogy to when you’re tripping, and you want to hold onto this thought that you really like. Yet you have a better experience if you’re really open’ Through sharing experiences, we recognise that puritanical closed views on drug usage ignore not only the potential mental health benefits, but the relative safety of non-toxic and non-addictive substances such as psilocybin, which have been taken by humans for centuries. Sharing openly is a first step towards drug destigmatisation. This is necessary to create judgement-free support networks, and to improve our awareness of both the potential and risks, through education and research. While none of those interviewed have experienced ‘bad trips’, there is still a risk of paranoia, psychosis, and frightening visualisations. Mindset and setting are essential considerations for preparation, including an openness to ‘losing control’ of one’s mind, albeit temporarily. James shared that he would never trip if he had plans on the following day, as it impacted his sleep and eating habits. During psychedelic retreats they often suggest preparing up to four weeks in advance by setting intentions, and then to make time for integration through talking and journaling afterwards to receive the most benefits from this potentially deeply meaningful trip.

remember the manners and norms I was taught as a receptionist: do not point with your finger, use the whole of your palm. Do not stand with your arms in front of you, they mustn’t be crossed. Keep your hands and arms behind you. Stand up with your back straight, do not hold your weight on one leg but evenly on both. All of these things were emphasised in my orientation and I notice that still, after many years, they are ingrained in me. Although they at times feel like foreign ways of being, I also notice they evoke a mirage of professionality and elegance which has been an advantage at times. Wanting to understand how commonly these habits of being are taught, I looked into training manuals in the hospitality field. My findings shocked me.

Worshipping the Corporation

‘Whether I am on or off duty, I am an ambassador of X brand…’

‘Whether I am on or off duty, I am an ambassador of X brand and will always observe the highest standards of professionalism…’ This quote is directly from a large hospitality company’s training manual. It’s not uncommon for companies to ask their employees to adhere to a set of values as a part of their training for their position. However, often these values come across as ideology, a system of belief.

Values given via ideologies are treated similarly to values given through religion. Because these values are presented as fundamental building blocks of a good life, they are not easily questioned.

As the sociologist Emil Durkheim suggested, religion can be understood as society worshipping itself, meaning that the sociological function of religion is to maintain the social order of society. Whilst his theory was

in reference to religion, perhaps something analogous is taking place with corporate ideology and the values enforced through them. The purpose of giving values through training is to maintain the social order within the company and thus

the training manuals could be seen in a Durkheimian way, as examples of corporations worshipping themselves. I can find this similarity in how ideologies are enforced in religious contexts and in the context of onboarding. When being trained to work as a receptionist, I had to do a quiz based on the company’s vision, values and mission. From the multiplechoice questionnaire, I had to confirm that my values were those that the company had taught me. Comparatively, during my stay at a Christian confirmation camp, a standard rite of passage in Finland, I was quizzed and expected to learn and repeat the ten commandments. In both of these experiences the values were not chosen or discussed, but rather imposed.

Work-me or & Personal-life-me: Which am I? The values displayed in them are fixed and cannot be freely questioned, especially by those who are at the lower end of the (perceived) social hierarchy of the corporation. And so corporations can demand performance of the corporation’s brand’s identity both [i]on and off duty[/i]. Employees are expected to embody the values of their employer even when not working. Therefore, the merging of one’s work identity and personal identity (that I still experience) is encouraged via training.

Looking at this phenomenon from a critical perspective, the merging of one’s work identity and personal identity can bring about discomfort and questions about authenticity. As the model of one’s work identity is not chosen freely but enforced via training, it’s no wonder that employees may feel disorientated with the norms expected of them. After working in five-star hotels, I changed jobs to work in a start-up that did not emphasise prestige. I felt immense freedom being able to mention to my boss at the time that I had gone to a rave the previous weekend. Before, I had felt that these aspects of my personal life that did not fit the image of a high-end receptionist had to be hidden away. Thus fearing judgement, I never mentioned them. This embodiment of norms, prompts questions.

Accepted or forced habits?

The Mask of Power Often, it is the case that we must make compromises with the companies we are employed by; it’s relatively rare that one fully agrees with every single aspect that their

employer’s corporate ideology suggests. We are not usually able to choose a perfect company that represents ourselves like some corporate brand builders dream we do. It seems contradictory that companies are striving for diversity and inclusion yet simultaneously require agreement to a specific corporate ideology.

However, the issue isn’t black and white. The training and habits offered by companies also work as a shield.

The philosopher Michel Foucault wrote about how power manifests itself through ‘subjectification’. The term refers to individuals becoming subjects who discipline themselves (through norms) instead of the previous conceptualizations of power working through a risk of physical punishment.

Most importantly Foucault pointed out that power isn’t only controlling but it is also (re)productive; meaning that subjectification also produces power. Many people working in hospitality have a customer service persona which I would argue works to protect their authentic persona. It is thus a form of resistance toward the power struggles that occur in the day-to-day operations between customers and customer servants. Adhering to corporate values can be productive and protective. Unfortunately, those working in the front line of hospitality businesses often receive negative feedback face-to-face, sometimes even in hostile ways. When being shouted at, the stress can be diverted toward the work persona by separating one’s work persona and personal life.

But here lies the issue of demanding adherence to corporate ideology both on and off duty; if the work persona and personal life persona merge, how can an individual create the necessary boundary to deal with the stresses of recurring conflict? Therefore what training manuals are demanding is contradictory to their end goal of having a workforce that is well-equipped to deal with difficult situations. Training manuals often emphasise diversity and inclusivity yet offer a rigid model for manners which doesn’t allow for diversity of actions. Manuals emphasise personalised service, yet the norm within the industry is to behave according to a specific mode of conduct. I suggest that these contradictions are rarely pointed out because training manuals work as a guide to the corporate ideology of the company. Thus the values pointed out in them are treated as sacred. What would it look like if training manuals wouldn’t reduce the complexity of human beings by asking them to adhere to a specific set of values? After all, customer service is about serving fellow human beings, who are as diverse as the people who help them.

The Story of my House in Cameroon Choosing where to live during field-work can be a fateful decision, setting the terms for the research. For me, in 1971 when I started my promotie- onderzoek among the Maka, in the forest of Cameroon, the choice of house where I would be allowed to live turned out to be a hot issue with unsuspected implications. In many respects it prepared me for the further complications of ‘doing field-work’ in a post-colonial situation. It also showed how confused I was at the time by the idea of ‘modernization’ and the clear-cut opposition between ‘modern’ and ‘traditional.’

t the time – now 50 years ago – my firm intention was to become a ‘modern’ anthropologist, which for me meant to keep my distance from what I saw as ‘traditional’ hobby horses of classical anthropology: kinship, witchcraft and so on. In line with the general mood of optimism in Africa in those days – the ‘young states of Africa’ ready to take a shortcut to ‘modernization’ - I wanted to study change. So my topic became post-colonial state formation and how this affected relations at the village level. However, developments on the spot soon made it clear to me that I was not so free in choosing what I wanted to work on and what not. Of course there was the heavy Cameroonian bureaucracy, an impressive hierarchy of officials who made it amply clear that they were going to decide where I would be allowed to live and what I would study. But in practice, the people with whom I was going to live were the ones constantly (re-)directing my focus.

After a long journey along all the levels of the bureaucracy, I had finally obtained a note from the sous-préfet to settle in one of the cantons that fell under his jurisdiction.

I thought I had passed the main hurdles. However, when I showed my official note to the chief of the village that was recommended to me as dynamique, his reaction was that he could not decide these things on his own. He would call a village meeting next Sunday afternoon and I had to buy 40 litres of palm-wine to ‘sprinkle’ the meeting. That Sunday, it turned out that, of course, all the palm-wine had to be

consumed first, so everybody – men and women - were in elated spirits when the discussion had to start (especially later in the day palm wine can get quite strong). So, it turned out to be a true discussion, indeed. The villagers wanted to check all sorts of things – especially how they and the village would profit from me coming to live with them. Would I hire an assistant and a cook and also other people? The man who was proposed as cook insisted right away on hiring an assistant-cook. As usual with meetings among the Maka, it all became quite chaotic and exciting. For some time it seemed that the verdict would turn out to be negative. But then the chief quite bluntly imposed a decision by telling me in which house I should live. This raised again problems: for him it was clear that I should live in the most modern house of the village – a new type of house, propagated at the time by Dutch volunteers. I thought that as an anthropologist (even a ‘modern’ one) I should live in what I thought was a local house: a ‘poto-poto’ construction of mud bricks with a roof of raffia leaves. The chief was shocked: this was an old-fashioned house and my choice intimated that there was no ‘progress’ in his village. The intervention of the catechist of the local Presbyterian church saved me. He said that I could live in the ‘camp America’ where the old American missionaries of his church had lived when they passed through the village. And most of the villagers seemed to agree with him. Thus it was decided for me.

Later on I discovered that my ‘poto-poto’ house was not at all ‘traditional’. ‘Poto-poto’ was a new type of house imposed by the French colonists in the 1940s. I was to experience similar confusion with central topics for my research. In retrospect, I deeply admire the patience of Meke Blaise, my dear assistant who sadly died three years ago (aged 75, we continued to work together for more than 40 years). He must have grown very tired of having to explain to me time and again that for him kinship (bjel) was not at all a ‘traditional’ remainder. Indeed, he was a true master in working with kinship to find new bearings in the outside world - when we were travelling in the area but also when we went to the city of Yaoundé, the country’s capital, 250 km away. Similarly, he never tired of trying to make me understand that behind politics in the everyday world there was the shadow world, hidden but very dynamic, of the djambe (now translated as sorcellerie/ witchcraft) where the true decisions were taken. Again, this did seem ‘traditional’ to me, but it turned out that the witches were attributed all sorts of ‘modern’ practices: they had their own planes and landing spaces (invisible, but nonetheless very real) and they used magical objects which they ordered by postorder from France. The title of my best-selling book, The Modernity of Witchcraft, reflects what Meke taught me.

Looking back, two general implications stand out to me that might be relevant for present-day discussions.

First, that field-work means taking the time to listen and look. The test is whether all this is crowned by surprise. The present-day focus on the agency of things is a promising opening but it can have problematic effects if this means that shorter periods in the field can suffice (apparently no need to try and learn the local language or to delve in all the complications of the history of the place). For me, good field-work produces surprises but this takes time – a reward for weeks of boredom and apparent stagnation. Secondly, for me field-work has been a telling example that power is always ambiguous: my assistant at first addressed me as patron (as he deemed befitting for a white) but he soon stopped doing that. And indeed, often it seemed that he was in charge of how my research developed. Nowadays, his son, who adopted my complete name and for whom I paid medical studies for, still tells me by email what I should do (his authority now fortified by his medical expertise). In general, it was the villagers who drove home that kinship and witchcraft were not that ‘traditional.’ I cannot help wondering how selfreflexive anthropologists, worrying about power inequalities between researchers and their interlocutors, and about the extractive tendency of our discipline, forget about the humility imposed upon them in the field – not only by postcolonial bureaucracies but also by the people with whom they live and work with. My anthropology has been shaped by the field – and not the other way round.
