Some Famous Marys

Honouring Lives And Healing Hearts

by Kathy Wolfe

“Mary’s a Grand Old Name” goes the old 1905 tune by George M. Cohan. This week, Tidbits conveys some bits and pieces about some famous ladies named Mary. • The name Mary has its origins in the Hebrew language, with the name Miryam translating “sea of bitterness or sorrow.” In ancient times, the name Mary was considered too sacred to be used, revered because it belonged to the mother of Jesus. Finally in the 12th century, it came into popular use, and until the mid-twentieth century, remained the Number One name for girls. Today, the name Mary is at about Number 125 in popularity.

• Mary Tyler Moore got her start at age 17 as “Happy Hotpoint,” a tiny dancing elf on the Hotpoint appliance television commercials during the 1950s. She was paid $6,000 for the 39 commercials that were filmed in five days. In 1961, at 23, she landed the role of Laura Petrie on the popular “Dick Van Dyke Show,” a role she played for five years. It was on to her own sitcom, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1970, a sitcom featuring an independent working woman on staff as a producer in a Minneapolis newsroom. In a more unknown role, she starred opposite Elvis Presley as a nun in 1969’s Change of Habit. Mary has battled diabetes since age 33, and overcame a benign brain tumor at age 75. • We’ve been singing “Mary Had a Little Lamb” since the nineteenth century. The nursery rhyme was based on an actual incident that took place at a Sterling, Massachusetts school, attended by Sarah Josepha Hale. Sarah’s schoolmate Mary Sawyer brought her pet lamb to school in the late 1700s. In 1830, Hale’s poem was first published in Boston, and set to music by hymn composer Lowell Mason, who had written more than 1,600 hymn tunes, including “Nearer, My God, to

Thee.” Sarah Hale went on to become the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular magazine of the late 1800s, a position she held until she was nearly 90 years old. She also helped found Vassar College. In 1877, Thomas Edison recorded “Mary Had a Little Lamb” on his new phonograph device, the first time a human voice had been recorded on his invention. • At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, a young high school sophomore named Mary Lou Retton became the first American woman ever to win a gold medal in gymnastics. She also captured two silver and two bronze, making her total of five medals the most won by any athlete at the 1984 Olympics. Later that year, she became the first female athlete to be pictured on the front of the Wheaties box. All her years of gymnastic competition took their toll, when Retton needed hip replacement surgery in her mid-30’s. • Mary Shelley is best known for her first novel, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus. Mary was just 20 years old when Frankenstein was published anonymously in 1818. It was assumed that her husband, author Percy Shelley, was the author, because he authored the preface and dedicated it to his political hero. The book was first adapted to the stage in 1823 and to film in 1910. Other films followed in 1931, 1974, and 1994. Shelley and her husband had four children, three of whom died before the age of three. • Mary Kathlyn Ash started selling books doorto-door during World War II, while her husband was away in the service, amassing sales of $25,000 in just six months. She later became the national training director for the World Gift Company, but when she was passed over for a promotion in favor of a man she herself had trained, she resigned. Her next step was to write a book that would help women succeed in business, a book that became the business plan for her own dream company, Mary Kay Cosmetics. She started out with $5,000 and a 500-square-foot storefront in Dallas, Texas. She bought skin care formulas from a tanner who had created them while working on hides, and packaged them in her favorite color, pastel pink. Having recently remarried, her new husband was helping her prepare for the grand opening, when he died of a heart attack a month before the scheduled opening. Mary Kay’s 20-year-old son stepped in to help launch the business. By the end of the second year, she had sold nearly $1 million worth of products. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) I know, dear Lamb, that you don’t like anyone trying to take charge of one of your projects, but try to be a bit more flexible. A new idea could help hasten a positive result. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) I’m sure, like the time-thrifty Taurus that you are, that you’ve done much of your holiday shopping. But don’t relax yet. Wrap those gifts now to save yourself lots of unwanted pressure. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be receptive when a family member or friend asks to confide in you. Your positive reaction could ensure that he or she will have a happy holiday experience. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t be rushed into wrapping up that workplace problem. Consider leaving it until after the holidays. This way you’ll have the facts you need to reach the right resolution. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’ll get news that will make you glow brighter than the lights of the holiday season. Be sure to use what you learn both carefully and kindly, to avoid giving the wrong impression. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) That frayed relationship could be mended in time for the holidays if you were more flexible. Give a little, and you could get back a lot more than you imagined. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Things might not seem to be settling down as quickly as you would prefer. But it might be just a little holiday time flutter. You’ll soon get news that will lead to more stability. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Stop getting so involved in everyone’s personal problems that you lose precious time with loved ones. Remember, even the Supreme Court closes for the holidays. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) All signs point to a bright holiday, with all of those pesky problems finally resolved in your favor. Share the good times with people you love and, of course, who love you. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your plans should not be set in stone and cemented over. Leave some openings in case you need to make changes. Spend the holidays with your nearest and dearest. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Surprise! This holiday finds you on the receiving end of the generosity of those who are usually the recipients of so much that you give so freely and lovingly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) That piece of good news assures that you’ll be swimming in clearer, calmer waters this holiday season. There might be a storm or two ahead, but you’ll weather it all in fine style. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a flair for seeing things as you’d like them to be, as well as a gift for turning your perceptions into reality. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Winter Safety To say that winter has arrived feels like a slight understatement. With ambient temperatures as low as -23 degrees and wind-chills as low as -30 degrees, winter has made a dramatic and fierce entrance into our lives. With weather that is sure to freeze fingers, toes, and faces if given the chance, it is important to make sure that our four-legged friends have all the resources they need to be not only healthy but also happy this winter. The best advice we can give, and what we hope everyone has been doing and will continue to do, is to keep your pets inside. We always advocate for keeping cats indoors at all times, but this message is particularly important now. Not only do icy roads and fewer daylight hours increase your cat’s risk of getting hit by a car, but the odds of your cat surviving outside significantly decrease as the probability of them freezing increases. To make matters worse, cats will often hide inside car engines for warmth and shelter from the wind if they are left outside, adding yet another risk to an already dangerous season. Truly, it is best for you and your cat to keep them inside. Dogs should also be kept inside when the weather is this cold and stormy. If your face begins to hurt in the short time it takes to walk from your house to your car, just imagine how your dog feels if left outdoors while you’re at work all day. Keeping them indoors will not only keep your dog happy and healthy, it will also save you the cost of vet bills lest your dog get sick or get frostbite from being exposed to the cold for too long. If your dog absolutely cannot be inside, it is mandatory by law to provide them with a fully insulated shelter that will keep them warm, a constant supply of water in a dish that will keep it from freezing, and food. In addition to ensuring their warmth and well-being at all hours, it is important to make sure that your dog is safe from the cold when it is time for a walk. Depending on the breed of dog and the thickness of your dog’s coat, you may need to purchase your dog a sweater or a jacket. Dog boots may also be a wise purchase if you intend to go for long walks in the cold because the pads of dogs’ feet lack fur and are susceptible to frostbite. We at the Humane Society hope you and your fuzzy loved ones have a safe winter season, a merry Christmas, and a happy New Year!

Adoptables We would love to share the rest of our lives with just “YOU”

Call 692-1517 for more information Milly – Young adult spayed Lab Cross.

Milly still shows lots of puppy-like excitement for life in general, so we are guessing she is just a little over or a little under a year old. Milly is loving our current shortage of adoptable dogs and is taking full advantage of getting to go on loads of walks with our volunteers. She is quite social with other dogs and LOVES to play with them. A meet and greet would be necessary to make sure her play style and energy are a match for any dogs you may have. Cats make her a little bit nervous, but we are sure she could learn to live with one. If you need more get-up-and-go in your life, Milly will bring that to you with style and flare.

Drogger – Adult neutered male

Drogger is a sweet, gentle, and well-mannered cat. He is a true gentleman who believes he should always put his best paw forward, which is why he keeps his coat glossy and clean at all times. He certainly knows how to make a person feel special. If you are looking for some snuggles and love to light up your life, Drogger will never cease to make you smile.

Rosie – 2.5-yearold spayed female Lab

Miss Rosie is about as sweet as can be. Her soulful eyes tell of the vast amount of love she has to give and her constantly wagging tail speaks of how happy this lady is. Rosie likes to walk, loves to snuggle, and cannot wait to give a lucky family more affection than they ever knew they needed. Rosie prefers to be the alpha in the pack and is friendlier with male dogs than she is with females, so a meet and greet would be necessary if you have any other dogs.

Chrissy – 4-month-old female This beautiful little girl was found in the most unlikely of places: the dump. A concerned city worker found her there one chilly morning and immediately brought her to us. We think she cleans up well; just look at how pretty she is! Her fur is thick and soft as can be, and her purr melts away the tension of the day after just ten seconds of listening to it. She would love to snuggle all day. She just needs that special person to adopt her and become her snuggle partner.

Mugz – 2-year-old neutered male Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Meet Mugz. Though he is a little camera shy, this boy has a sweet face, soulful eyes, and the most adorable little smile you could imagine on a dog. Mugz wasn’t sure what to think of his new surroundings when he first came to us, so he was understandably a little nervous. With a bit of time and some tender love and care, Mugz has come out of his shell to show us his lovely personality. He may not be as quick to trust as other dogs, but, if you take the time to earn his trust, the reward of Mugz’s love and affection is most definitely worth the effort. To help build a close relationship with Mugz and set you both up for a loving, life-long partnership, Mugz would benefit from one-on-one lessons with a dog trainer who focuses on positive-reinforcement techniques.

Star – 3-month-old female Star is a playful little girl hoping to find a family who will love her all her life. She has a little something special that sets her apart from most other cats, she is polydactyl on all 4 paws! With her adorable paws and her winning purr, she certainly has earned her name, for this little girl was born to be a star.

Safety Bits Winter Ice Safety It appears like magic...sneaking up on you...usually in the dead of the night. Everything has been normal, then suddenly the lake down the road is covered with a shiny new coat of ice...and now you start planning that big first ice fishing expedition. What looks safe from shore can be a trap to send you plunging into ice water, which can ruin your whole day...not to mention possibly ending your life. PROCEED WITH CAUTION… “Thick and blue, tried and true...thin and crispy, way too risky!” The only way to tell how thick the ice is, of course to cut a hole in it. Start new shore and make several cuts as you go out. Remember that ice thickness is inconsistent and follows water currents as it freezes. On really cold days, you are likely to hear the ice rumbling and crackling which are actually the sounds of pressure being relieved as more ice forms beneath the ice...the ice is actually getting safer. OOPS! • Don’t PANIC if you fall through the ice • Use your legs to kick behind you to keep from being pulled under • If you cannot get to safety, CALL FOR HELP! • Slip boots off to make treading water easier IF SOMEONE ELSE FALLS IN THE ICE…”REACH, THROW, ROW GO” • REACH-use stick, branch or fishing pole • THROW-rope, PFD, anything that floats • ROW-row or push small boat, canoe • GO-call for help IS THE ICE SAFE??? • 3 inches = UNSAFE • 4 inches = 1 person (200 lbs) • 5 inches = 1 snowmobile (800 lbs) • 7 inches = group activities (1500 lbs) • 9-11 inches = light truck (2000 lbs) REMEMBER… ...ice may not be the same thickness all over. ...be extra careful on rivers and streams because the ice may look thicker than it actually is because moving water wears down the ice from beneath. ...stay away from multiple pressure cracks.

by Samantha Weaver * It was American cartoonist Bill Watterson who, in his much-loved comic strip “Calvin and Hobbes,” made the following sage observation: “It’s hard to be religious when certain people are never incinerated by bolts of lightning.”

* There is a dispute among literary historians concerning the last words of beloved American poet Emily Dickenson. Some claim that the last thing she said was, “I must go in, the fog is rising.” Others claim her last words were rather less poetic: “Oh, is that all it is?” * You’re probably aware that many high-rise buildings in the United States don’t include a 13th floor, skipping straight from 12 to 14, just because the superstitious among us consider the number 13 to be unlucky. You might be surprised to learn, though, that China has its own version of the practice: There, buildings skip from the third to the fifth floor. The word for the number four is pronounced almost the same way as the word for death, so the number is considered to be unlucky. * * * Thought for the Day: “History is a vast early-warning system.” -- Norman Cousins

* ‘Tis the season for resolutions -- have you made yours yet? If not, here are some of the most common ones you can choose from: lose weight, eat healthier, get more exercise, stop smoking, create (and stick to!) a budget, save money, get organized, find a better job, and even just be a better person. Sounds great, right? I have some bad news, though: According to statisticians, only about half of Americans make any resolutions at all for the new year -- and of those who do, (c) a quarter of them give up within two weeks.

Her career was prolific, with 1909 her most productive, appearing in 51 films in that year alone, almost one every week! Her beautiful curls were her trademark, and she was known as “America’s Sweetheart” during her prime. Pickford went on to co-found the film studio United Artists and was one of the original 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. • First published in 1934, Mary Poppins was British author Pamela Travers’ first literary success. She authored seven sequels in the series, with the last in 1988. Walt Disney approached Travers in 1938 to purchase the rights to make a film, but was firmly turned down. Disney hounded her for the next 23 years, until, in 1961, when she finally surrendered. Travers objected to Disney’s changing Mary Poppins’ character from the unfriendly, strict, intimidating character in her book to the gentler, cheerier character portrayed by Julie Andrews. Disney’s movie was 1965’s top-grossing film, and Disney’s top-grossing for the next 20 years. It nabbed five Oscars out of 13 nominations, (including Julie Andrews’ first Oscar), making it Disney’s most successful in terms of Academy Awards.
