Hummingbirds

Unusual Animals

This week, Tidbits is just humming along, taking a look at our tiny feathered friend, the hummingbird. • There are about 340 identified species of hummingbirds in the world, the second largest bird family. Yet they can only be found in the western hemisphere. Ecuador has the most hummingbirds of any country. Mexico is home to 50 different species, but only eight species are found in the U.S. They are not just found in warm climates -- three species are found in Canada, and certain types are even found in Alaska. • A ruby-throated hummingbird weighs about 3 grams. Compare this to the weight of a nickel at 4.5 grams. That’s about 150 birds to make one pound (0.45 kg)! The smallest bird in the world, the bee hummingbird, is about 2 inches (5 cm) long and weighs about 2.5 grams, about the same as a penny. Even the largest species, the giant hummingbird, is only 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long. Yet their tiny size doesn’t affect their attitude. They are one of the most aggressive bird species, and will attack jays, crows, and hawks that intrude in their territory. • These tiny creatures can flap their wings as many as 200 times per second! They can fly at speeds up to 30 mph (48.2 km/h), and when diving, can reach double that speed. They are the only bird that can fly backwards. However, for all these amazing feats, the hummingbird can’t walk. Their pectoral chest muscles are so strong, they make up almost 30% of the bird’s body weight. • In order to collect nectar, hummingbirds do not suck the nectar through their long bills. Rather, they lick it at the rate of 10 to 15 times per second with forked tongues. • The bird’s heart beats around 1,260 times per minute, and even at rest, its breathing rate is 250 breaths per minute. In order to support this incredibly high metabolism, the bird needs to eat up to eight times per hour. Each feeding session lasts less than a minute. The hummingbird will visit about 1,000 flowers per day to gather the sugary sweet nectar needed for their energy. But because the nectar is not a good source of other nutrients, the birds also dine on insects and spiders. • At night, when food is not readily available, hummingbirds enter a deep-sleep state similar to hibernation known as torpor. Their metabolism, heart, and breathing rates all dramatically slow down to preserve their energy levels. The heart, which normally beats during the daytime upwards of 1,200 times per minute, slows down to no more Continued on page 11

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A workrelated situation that started last month takes on increasing importance this week. The choice is still yours as to how it will evolve. Be careful not to make quick judgments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) “Careful” is the watchword for the prudent Bovine this week. Don’t let your emotions overwhelm your logic. Try for balance as you maneuver through a touchy situation. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your energy levels rise to meet the challenges that will mark much of this month. New opportunities beckon. Look them over, but proceed cautiously before making any kind of decision. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your private life can be a problem this week, as a partner becomes more difficult. Resist a reaction you might regret. Instead of walking away, try to talk things out. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You should be your usual sunny self these days, as you bask in the admiration you adore. Enjoy it as you move into a new arena to confront an exciting upcoming challenge. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your perseverance reserves will be tapped frequently this week as you deal with the problems involved in making a new situation work for you. But it’ll all be worth it. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’ll find fewer roadblocks turning up as you continue to move ahead with your plans. Expect some important news to come your way by mid-November. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Good news -- you finally get to the bottom of that pesky mystery you’ve been trying to solve for weeks by using some gentle persuasion to get someone to break his or her silence. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The best time to take on that important task is now. Move forward one step at a time so you can assess your progress and, if need be, change direction. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The new opportunities you hoped to find this month are beginning to open up. Study them carefully to be sure you make the choice that’s best for you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Turn a disappointment into a learning experience. Check out possible weaknesses in your approach and strengthen them. A loyal colleague offers good advice. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your new situation offers opportunities to help you get the skills you’ll need in order to stop swimming in circles and finally move straight toward your goals. Go for it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a sharp, logical mind and a quick intellect. You would make an excellent mystery writer. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

News from the Shelter

Rock Chip Repairs SGI Accredited 30 Years Experience

What It Means To Be A No Kill Shelter

Every animal deserves their best chance to find their forever home, no matter how long it may take them. This is why the Moose Jaw Humane Society is committed to being a no-kill shelter: we want to make sure every animal gets their chance to find love. Some people may not know what it means to be a no-kill shelter. While all shelters do their absolute best to ensure no pet is left behind, many still find it necessary to euthanize cats and dogs who have not found homes after a long period of time to make space for new animals in need of care. That part of the job is heartbreaking for any animal rescue worker, but it is an unfortunate reality in many shelters. Luckily, the Executive Director of the Moose Jaw Humane Society worked painstakingly to make sure that such a fate never meets any animal under our care. When our current Executive Director took over the responsibility of running the Humane Society nine years ago, she made an immediate policy change to make sure that no animal who came to us was ever euthanized because they could not find a home within a certain time period. As a result, we have had overwhelming success in finding homes for animals who would have been euthanized if we did not have our no-kill policy. Two such pets who stand out in the hearts and minds of our staff are Tinkerbell and Sean. Tinkerbell is a beautiful tabby cat who was absolutely terrified when she was first surrendered to us. With a lot of patience and love, our staff brought her out of her shell and she eventually became a constant companion for everyone who works at the shelter. It took seven long months to find the right home for Tinkerbell, but she now lives with a family more loving than any of us could have imagined. Sean is a gorgeous black lab who found shelter life incredibly stressful. He had been rescued from a hard situation and did not show well in his kennel due to anxiety. Many people passed him by, afraid that he would be too aggressive to live comfortably in their home. This was difficult for our staff to hear because Sean is such a happy and loving boy. He was simply terrified of shelter life. After six months, the right man finally walked in to adopt Sean. Now, Sean lives stress-free with a human he loves more than life itself. One of the harder parts of being a no-kill shelter is turning people away when they want to surrender their pet, but we have no space to take in a new animal. Our desire to help all animals makes it hard to turn anyone away, but seeing success stories like Tinkerbell’s and Sean’s makes it worth that bit of heartbreak. If we did not limit our intake of animals, those two beautiful souls would never have found their loving families, and the world would be a darker place. Being a no-kill shelter is only possible because of our staff’s stalwart commitment to giving the animals of Moose Jaw their best chance and because of the unwavering support of our community. We cannot thank you enough. Pets like Tinkerbell and Sean cannot thank you enough for your continued support of the Moose Jaw Humane Society.

Call 692-1517 for more information Zelda – 2-year-old spayed female

Meet Zelda, Princess of Hyrule to some, cuddly cat extraordinaire to all. Zelda is a gorgeous girl with a loving personality. Her favourite thing is to rub her head against your hand as you scratch her ears and neck, and the sound of her purr is like the beautiful singing of the mystical maiden she is named for. She is just waiting for her Link to come save her and take her home. Are you the hero she’s looking for?

Herman – 7-monthold male M e e t Herman the love bug. He’s clean and tidy and loves to nap, but he perks up faster than a coffee addict after the first shot of espresso if he has the chance to cuddle someone. He’s not content to let you do all of the loving either; he likes to lick and groom your hand while you pet him so you know just how much he loves you. He is one of the most affectionate boys we have seen in a long time, and all he wants is a family he can snuggle with all hours of the day.

Buck – 1-year-old neutered male Shepherd Cross

Carol – 3-yearold female Lab Cross

Carol is a gorgeous girl who has more than earned a loving family that will make her the centre of attention. She recently gave birth to ten healthy and happy puppies. Now that the pups are old enough to be without her, she is ready to spend some time finding out who she is when she is not busy being a mum. So far, she has found out that she loves to go for long walks and play endless hours of fetch. She also loves to snuggle with the people who care for her as much as she possibly can. What she is really looking for, though, is a family with whom she can share endless love.

Buck is fluffy ball of energy in the form of a young adult Shepherd/ Husky cross. Like all members of his breed, he loves to run and be active for as much of the day as possible. He would be a good pal for camping, exploring, and generally having adventures. If you think you have stamina, this guy will give you a run for your money, but don’t worry, he’ll snuggle with you when you’re all tuckered out.

Anastasia – 1.5-yearold spayed female

Anastasia is a beautiful tuxedo lady with a glossy coat and luminous yellow eyes. She is curious about the world around her and would be ecstatic to have an entire house to explore and share with her family. She is also cuddly and loves to soak up the love, but, in typical feline fashion, she wants you to do all the work! We can certainly say it is a privilege to get to pet a cat with such a soft coat and calming purr, so it is more than worth putting in that extra effort to go to her in order to soak up her love.

Kane – 4-yearold neutered male Husky Cross

Kane is everything you expect from a husky. He is gorgeous, friendly, energetic, and he loves to sing! Kane is a sweet boy who will work extra hard to make sure you know you’re loved and get more than enough kisses. He will also get you into the habit of exercising regularly, if only to keep him from getting too hyper. Kane is a special boy who will make you laugh so hard you cry and will fill your heart with warmth all year long. We hope to find him a home as wonderful as he is!

Safety Bits Safety & Back Care During Fall Clean-Up Two key ingredients for a safe fall clean-up: preparation, and common sense. Yard work presents some unique safety challenges - including slips, trips and falls, or even strains and sprains. Your fall clean-up doesn’t need to be stressful or painful; just follow these tips. 1. Prepare: • Proper preparation can keep you safe and make you use your time more efficiently. Before raking or mowing, remove debris or tripping hazards from your yard (such as toys, fallen tree limbs, large rocks, hoses). • Be sure to stretch and warm up before you start for at least 10 minutes. Wear closed-toe, non-slip footwear for all yard chores to prevent foot injuries. • Prioritize your chores and make sure all of your equipment (e.g. lawn mower, leaf blower) is in good working order before starting. 2. Use Common Sense: • It is important to use common sense when performing your fall clean-up. • For example, when you’re filling bags with leaves or tree limbs, be careful not to overfill them. Lifting heavy objects can lead to back injuries. • If you normally don’t exercise very often you’ll need to pace yourself and not do too much at once. Even if you do exercise regularly, yard clean-up is aerobic activity that uses a lot of under-used muscle groups, so you still need to pace yourself to ensure you don’t hurt yourself. Safety Tips for Common Fall Activities: Climbing Safety • Activities such as tree trimming and gutter cleaning are common during the fall, and typically require a ladder or climbing. • Ladder safety: when using a ladder, do not stand above the level indicated by the manufacturer. Don’t try to stretch from the ladder. Get down and move the ladder instead. It can help to have a second person hold the base of the ladder steady for extra security. • Avoid climbing activities during high wind or dangerous weather (thunderstorms). Assume that all power lines are active and do not climb with tools in your hands. Use gloves, safety goggles, head gear and ear plugs as needed based on the task. Fertilizer Safety • You may need to fertilize your grass or flower beds in the fall to ensure a healthy lawn or garden the next spring. Remember that fertilizers include chemicals and should be handled with care. Keep fertilizers away from children and pets. Wear gloves whenever you use or handle chemicals. Let neighbours know that you’re spraying. Keep all children and pets off the lawn until you have watered the fertilized space or until you’ve had a heavy rain. Most importantly, read the directions on your fertilizer before every use and carefully follow them. Brought To You By:

In Flanders Fields

- Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. The 3-inchlong (7.6-cm) rufous hummingbird travels 3,900 miles (6,276 km) one way from Alaska to Mexico.

You can also add a feeder containing a mixture that is one part sugar to four parts water.
