SWIMS WITH THE

JELLYFISH

Better water solutions for your entire home.

by Kathy Wolfe

This week, Tidbits goes under the sea to swim with the jellyfish, bringing you some fascinating facts about this gelatinous marine animal. • Jellyfish aren’t really fish at all! Fish are vertebrates, meaning they have a backbone, while jellyfish are invertebrates lacking a backbone. In fact, they don’t even have the basic sensory organs, respiratory system, circulatory system, or even a brain! Jellyfish also don’t have gills that would classify them as a fish. Many public aquariums refer to them as “sea jellies” instead. Their bodies are mostly water, about 94% to 98%. The mushroom-shaped top of the jellyfish is known as the bell. • Jellyfish swim by contracting their bodies, but they aren’t very good swimmers. They’re usually moved along by water currents, which accounts for the many times they are washed up on beaches. These creatures are especially high in numbers in the tropical oceans around Florida, Malaysia, Australia, Hawaii, and the Philippines. • Jellyfish that swim near the water’s surface nearer to the sunlight are usually colorless or transparent. Those dwelling in the deep can be found in many vibrant colors, including red, purple, green, yellow, and even striped. • There are about 400 areas in the oceans of the world where jellyfish are the only life form that can survive. • The lifespan of a jellyfish varies from a few hours to a few days up to less than a year. • Sizes of jellyfish vary greatly, with the smallest about one millimeter. The two largest species are the Lion’s Mane and Nomura’s jellyfish. The Lion’s Mane’s thread-like tentacles can grow up to 120 feet (36.5 m) long, with a bell diameter of 39 inches (100 cm) that is shaped like an eight-pointed star. This jelly’s tentacles are arranged in eight bunches with more than 100 tentacles in each. The largest Lion’s Mane ever seen washed ashore in Massachusetts Bay in 1870. Its bell diameter Turn the page for more!

was 7 feet, 6 inches (2.3 m), and total body length was longer than the largest known blue whale. Lion’s Mane species favor cold northern waters, including the Arctic Sea and northern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. While their sting is moderately painful, it is seldom fatal. • Nomura’s jellyfish is found in the waters off Japan, Korea, and China. Its bell diameter can reach 79 inches (200 cm) and it might weight up to 440 lbs. (200 kg). • The Stygiomedusa Gigantean jellyfish has only been seen 115 times in the last 110 years. Like the Lion’s Mane, the Stygiomedusa can have a bell diameter of 39 inches (100 cm) wide, but rather than the hundreds of tentacles, it has four thick paddle-like arms about 20 feet (6 m) long. • Nematocysts are very small stinging cells located in the tentacles that inject toxin into a jellyfish’s prey. Touching a jellyfish can initiate millions of these cells to pierce the victim’s skin. A sting can range from a slight tingling to extreme pain and even to death. • More people are killed each year by jellyfish than by sharks. Yet jellyfish don’t purposely attack humans, with stings occurring when a person accidentally touches the creature. • The most poisonous species of jellyfish, the Irukandji Jellyfish, is also the most venomous animal on Earth, with a toxin 100 times stronger than that of a cobra. Effects of a sting include nausea, vomiting, high blood pressure, agonizing pain, and in some cases, death. It’s possible to treat a single sting, but multiple stings usually result in death. • The box jellyfish is one of the Irukandji species, with a sting that can cause death in as little as three minutes. It’s capable of swimming at speeds up to 4 mph (6.4 km/hr), faster than most humans. It is more physically advanced than most other jellyfish, with four brains, and 24 eyes, two of which can see color. With all of these eyes, the box jellyfish has a 360-degree view of its environment. • The 60 tentacles of a single box jellyfish contain enough venom to kill 60 people. Their stingers can release toxin faster than a gun discharges a bullet. • With an abundance of box jellyfish found in the waters surrounding Australia, that continent reports about 10,000 stings every year. Between 20 and 40 people die annually in the Philippines alone from the deadly sting. • Another Irukandji species, the sea wasp, has about half a million darts on each tentacle. In the past 60 years, close to 5,600 deaths have been attributed to this jellyfish. Its bell reaches the size

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good time to let that intrepid Aries temperament take charge. Your strong leadership will help settle those still-unresolved situations. Support comes from a surprising source. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your problem-solving talents shine as you move to cool down heated emotions. You also inspire trust in all parties when you act with careful consideration of their feelings. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) That longdelayed commitment begins to look better to you. But there’s still a crucial fact or two you need to know about it. A health problem needs to be taken care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Don’t waste time trying to learn why someone you relied on is wavering in his or her support of your stand on a workplace issue. Move on with the help of more steadfast allies. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Relationships enter a brighter period, both at home and in the workplace. Prospects also look good for single Leos and Leonas, who can expect a welcome visit from Cupid. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Those mixed signals that were complicating your life are giving way now to clear, definitive guidelines. This makes it easier for you to weigh your options and make decisions. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Ask your partner for an explanation of what seems to be a sign of strain in your relationship. The sooner you understand the problem, the sooner you can both act to resolve it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A new challenge in the workplace holds an exciting promise for the future. But be aware of the fact that you haven’t been told about all the demands you might have to meet. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your financial picture brightens as you get into sorting out realistic goals and those that are not reachable at this time. “Caution” remains your fiscal watchword. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You’re deep into your new project, and that’s just fine. But don’t neglect your family and friends. Spending time with people you care for is always a wise investment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Past feelings are suddenly reawakened. This could make you emotionally vulnerable. Be careful about decisions you might be asked to make at this time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You’ve come to a place where you’ll be facing important decisions that can affect your future. Rely on your strong moral compass to guide you toward making the right choices. News from the Shelter

Rock Chip Repairs SGI Accredited 30 Years Experience

The Christmas Shelter Shop

As December approaches, we at the Humane Society are preparing to put on our Christmas Shelter Shop! This year, the Christmas Shelter Shop will be held right here at the Humane Society in the front office. All gifts for sale will be petrelated, and all of the money raised will go directly to helping the homeless pets here at the shelter! We will be selling Christmas stockings for both cats and dogs, as well as any larger items that will excite your pet or enhance their life with you. Our Christmas Shelter Shop will begin sales in the first week of December. Until then, we are accepting donations of toys and treats for both cats and dogs, jackets and boots for short-haired dogs, Christmas stockings, and any other fun pet-related items you may wish to donate. When the shop opens in the first week of December, we will be the perfect place to get a gift for your furry family member. Not only will we have pre-made stockings for your four-legged friend, but any money you spend at our shop goes directly to helping other four-legged friends in need. We will also have our Christmas catalogue on display to help you shop for those people on your list who already have everything. Instead of buying them something they may not want or need just for the sake of giving them a gift, you can purchase life-enhancing and life-saving supplies for the animals at the Humane Society in their name. If you want to avoid mall madness this Christmas and use the season of giving to help souls in need, our Christmas Shelter Shop is the place to do some shopping you can feel great about.

Adoptables We would love to share the rest of our lives with just “YOU”

Call 692-1517 for more information Casey – 7-yearold spayed Shih Tzu/ Poodle cross

Casey is a sweet little lady ready to start her new life. She tried really hard to look serious for this picture, but this is the only moment we’ve seen her without a smile on her face. She is so enthusiastic about life that she doesn’t just wag her tail, she wags her entire body. When you lean down to offer your hand to pet her, she runs up so quickly that her ears flap with every little bound she makes. The best word to describe Casey is precious, and this precious little lady just needs a loving family and a safe home.

Simba – 3-year-old spayed female

Simba is a momma who tends to come off as nervous and even a bit grouchy, but we have seen a different side of her. She doesn’t beg for attention like other cats, but if you go to her with a warm heart and gentle hands, she will happily love you back. She feels best when she is with another cat, and does extremely well in a kennel with either of her daughters. Simba’s dream is to get adopted with her daughters, Sunshine and Nala, and we’re hoping that she gets lucky enough to have her dream come true.

Harvey – Adult male Boxer/Terrier cross

Milly – Adult spayed Hound

Milly is an adorable girl who certainly knows how to pull the puppy-dog eyes to get some love. Her favourite pastime is going on as many walks as possible to explore, bond with the person walking her, and work out some of her boundless energy. She will require some extra patience and training as she was never housetrained before she came to us, but she is working to fix that. If you want a gal who will keep you active and make you smile, Milly is your lady.

Nala – 2-year-old spayed female

Nala, one of Simba’s daughters, is a shy girl. She isn’t one to come up to the front of her kennel and attract attention, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t a loving soul. She is just sitting patiently for the right family to come adopt her so she can nap in their laps all day long. What would make her the absolute happiest is if she could be adopted with her sister, Sunshine, and her mother, Simba.

This adorable B o x e r / Te r r i e r cross is Harvey. Harvey is tough fella with more determination in his bones than many dogs have in their entire bodies. When we found Harvey, he was literally starving, and, for a while, we weren’t sure if he would ever recover. Thankfully, with love, care, a regimented diet, and the work of his fighting spirit, Harvey has recovered and is ready to find his forever home. He is a happy, loving boy with a lot of energy and a zest for life. All he needs is a family who will love him and work to inspire him as much as he has inspired everyone who has met him.

Sunshine – 2-yearold spayed female

Sunshine is the light of her family’s life and the daughter everyone hopes for. She keeps her mother, Simba, company in her kennel, and, as a result, Simba is a much happier lady. If Sunshine has this effect on her momma, we can only imagine the positive effect she will have on the lucky family who adopts her. Her dearest hope is to go home with her sister, Nala, and her mother, Simba. We are desperately hoping this dream will be realized.

Safety Bits Winter Driving Safety It’s never fun if your vehicle lets you down, but it can be downright miserable or even dangerous if it happens on a cold winter day. Just as we’ve cleaned our windows and raked up the leaves in preparation for winter, so too should your car we winterized. Here are a few things you should know about “winterizing” your vehicle: Winter tires: Make sure you have a good set of winter tires. They’ll improve traction, but if they are severely worn, you’ll have trouble braking, accelerating and handling, especially on slippery roads. Many people opt for “all-season” tires. Depending on your local climate, they can be an adequate compromise for average year-round weather conditions but won’t perform as well as genuine winter tires in the worst ice and snow. Whatever you choose, buy them before winter arrives. Exhaust system: Be sure to check the muffler and exhaust pipes for leaks and for their general condition each fall. Corrosion or perforations in the exhaust system can permit leakage of lethal carbon monoxide fumes into the passenger compartment. When there’s snow on the roads, ensure your exhaust tailpipe isn’t obstructed by it when starting the engine, and never back into snow banks. Tire pressure: Since traction is compromised when driving on ice or snow, the correct tire pressure is critical. Properly inflated tires ensure good contact with the road and protect the wheels from pothole damage. Your owner’s manual should list the recommended pressures. Wipers and washer fluid: Typically, there is reduced visibility in winter due to reduced daylight, snow and ice. In most parts of Canada, wiper blades last one year before needing replacement and sooner if damaged. If you live where there is lots of ice and snow during the winter you should consider investing in wipers made specifically for winter. During the winter months it is best to use windshield washer fluid made for colder temperatures to avoid further reduction in visibility. Also check your reservoir on a regular basis before heading out. Before the season starts, assemble the things you would need if stuck somewhere on a remote winter road. Include all the usual emergency things, but you should also have extra items for the longer trips. The things you should always have in your car during winter. * Flashlight * Flares * Blankets & extra clothing * Shovel * Gloves * Fuses * Booster cables * Sand bags or Traction pads * Scraper and brush * Matches and candles * Gas line antifreeze * First aid kit * Tow rope * Chocolate bars-they won’t spoil and they provide food in an emergency * Tire chains * Crowbar and other small hand tools Whether it’s a short shopping trip out of town or a longer excursion, be prepared for winter emergencies and don’t wait till the snow on the ground tells us all winter is here. Taking a first aid course is a great way to learn how to be prepared and what to do in an emergency. Our trained professionals will give you the skills to prevent emergencies and most of all know what to do. Statistics say that 40% of all injuries reduced by people taking a first aid course. Protect yourself, your family and fellow co-workers. Planning for winter includes making your vehicle ready too!

Jellyfish Continued From page 2 of a basketball, with 60 tentacles, up to 15 feet long (4.6 m) hanging down. • Even dead jellyfish have the ability to sting when touched, with tentacles able to stay alive for about four days. In 2010, a dead Lion’s Mane jellyfish washed up on shore at a state park in Rye, New Hampshire. It weighed about 50 lbs. (22.7 kg), with a bell about the size of a trash can lid, and tentacles reaching 13 feet (4 m). When a lifeguard attempted to pick up the jellyfish with a pitchfork, the creature began to fall apart, but its stingers were still active. Nearly 150 people were stung by the dead jelly. • A large group of jellyfish is known as a bloom or a smack,

and can contain as many as 100,000 of the creatures. A bloom can grow pretty rapidly, considering that a single jellyfish can release as many as 45,000 eggs each day. The sheer number of the animals can create havoc in the seas. In 1982, the comb jellyfish was accidentally introduced into Eastern Europe’s Black Sea. Within eight years, the creature had caused $350 million in losses to the area’s fishing and tourism industries. By consuming ten times its body weight in food every day, the jellyfish wiped out 900 million tons of fish during that time. They were also responsible for a temporary shutdown of a Japanese nuclear power plant when a large group became stuck

Omelets To The Rescue Christmas brunch is a holiday tradition at our house, and eggs are always the star of the show. Year after year, eggs have been my choice for a healthy and inexpensive way to feed a crowd. My Oven-Baked Omelet recipe is quick and easy to make, and delicious for breakfast, brunch or even a light supper. This recipe offers a creative way to prepare and serve a buffet-style brunch. I love providing my guests with their choice of different types of precooked meats, diced vegetables and a variety of cheeses to personalize their omelets. The savory tomato topping and the ingredient selections can be pre-cooked the day before, refrigerated and reheated to save time. OVEN-BAKED OMELETS The precooked toppings for these oven-baked omelets can be set up buffet style and quickly reheated in the microwave, using an electric skillet or on the stovetop in a saute pan. Cooking oil spray, butter or vegetable oil for saute and baking pans 6 large eggs, separated 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon grated onion 3 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons Italian Seasoning 1/2 cup each, precooked meat and vegetable toppings* Cheese for sprinkling or topping: Parmesan, Cheddar, American, Gouda, Goat cheese, etc. *andouille sausage, salmon, Canadian bacon, ham, pork sausage, pork or turkey bacon, black beans, mushrooms, baby spinach leaves, chopped green onions, diced zucchini, diced squash, chopped onions or bell peppers, sliced black olives, etc. 1. in the plant’s cooling system. • Jellyfish can be accidentally introduced into their non-native habitat by attaching to ship hulls and traveling into other areas. • If you see Australian lifeguards wearing pantyhose on their arms and legs, it’s because even something as thin as nylon pantyhose will prevent jellies from stinging. • After the first jellyfish sting, it is very important to get out of the water immediately and wash the area with salt water, not fresh water. Salt water deactivates the stinging cells, while fresh water reactivates them. Scraping the area with a credit card is the best way to remove the stinging cells.

a large bowl, beat together egg whites and 3/4 teaspoons of the salt with an electric hand mixer until soft peaks form. Do not overbeat. 2. In another bowl, mix the egg yolks, remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, pepper, grated onion, flour and Italian seasoning. Beat until the mixture is thick and thoroughly blended. Gently fold in the egg whites. Spread mixture in the hot cake pans. Bake for 15 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. 3. Use a knife to loosen the omelets from the sides of the pans. Invert the layers, bottom-side down, onto serving plates. Cut the omelets into wedges. Cover the pieces with foil to keep warm. 4. Have your guests select the precooked meats and vegetables of their choice. Add 1/2 teaspoon oil to medium saute pan, and heat over mediumhigh heat. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons of the pre-made tomato topping per serving to the pan, and heat for 2 minutes over low heat. Mix your guest’s topping selections with the hot tomato topping and mix until warm, about 2 minutes. Spoon the topping mixture over the omelet slice. Sprinkle with cheese, if desired. Serve immediately with sliced fruit and hot biscuits or rolls. Serves 12.
