by Kathy Wolfe “ Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” These were the opening words to each episode of the original Star Trek series. This week, Tidbits heads into space to explore the particulars of this television program, which premiered in 1966. • Gene Roddenberry, creator of Star Trek, had been a writer for a 1960s series about the Old West, and visualized a Western in outer space, what he called “Wagon Train to the stars.” He was inspired by Horatio Hornblower novels about a skilled naval seaman, as well as Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. The setting of the sci-fi adventure was the 23rd century, from 2266 to 2269. • The crew of the space vessel USS Enterprise number approximately 430, and was commanded by Captain James Tiberius Kirk, defending the United Federation of Planets. The first pilot for the show was filmed in late 1964 and was entitled “The Cage.” There was no Captain Kirk in the first pilot, but rather a Captain Christopher Pike, played by actor Jeffrey Hunter. • NBC executives rejected the first Star Trek pilot, but because they still liked the show’s concept, paid for a second pilot, “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Captain Kirk was introduced, played by a 35-year-old Canadian actor named William Shatner, whose name would become synonymous with Star Trek. The second pilot also introduced Lieutenant Commander Montgomery “Scotty” Scott and helmsman Sulu.

STAR TREK (continued):

• The character of Russian-born navigator Pavel Chekov was introduced in the series’ second season. Walter Koenig appeared in 36 episodes from 1967 to 1969. • Roddenberry used the series to convey statements about morality, sexism, racism, nationalism, violence, and global war. He began by hiring a racially diverse crew, and went on to give the show a strong anti-war message, implications about nuclear war, and other political and social issues. Star Trek gained notoriety as the first American TV show to feature an interracial kiss between Captain Kirk and Lt. Uhura, played by Nichelle Nichols. • The name Sulu does not have Japanese origins, but was conceived from Roddenberry’s observation of the Sulu Sea on a map. This body of water touches the shores of all Asian countries. Sulu’s character, played by George Takei, (who appeared in 52 episodes) has no first name in the original series, but a 1981 Star Trek novel bestows the first name of Hikaru. • Due to Mr. Spock’s green Vulcan blood, Nimoy’s makeup had a faint greenish tinge to it, but because the formula was hand-mixed, the amount of green occasionally varied. Rodenberry’s original idea was for Spock’s skin to be red, which would have created many additional hours of make-up time for Nimoy. When an early screen test showed that red appeared as black on 1960s blackand-white TV’s, the notion was scrapped. • The first regular episode aired on September 8, 1966, (two days earlier in Canada), and the last aired on June 3, 1969. In the beginning, ratings were high, but had dropped to 52nd out of 94 by the end of the first season. NBC was ready to cancel the show partway through the second season, but an extraordinary letter-writing campaign was begun, petitioning NBC to keep it. Hundreds of thousands of letters were written to the network (including one from then-New York Governor Nelson

(954) 779-3000 www.ThePremierSmile.com

Rockefeller) in an attempt to save the beloved sci-fi series. Picketers marched in front of NBC’s Burbank studios in support. But despite the valiant efforts, NBC cancelled Star Trek after the third season. • StarTrek’s original time slot was Thursday evening, but with the flagging ratings, NBC moved it from its primetime position to 10 PM on Friday night, known as “the Friday night death slot,” an hour undesirable for its younger audience, contributing to an even greater dip in ratings and its cancellation. • Three months after its cancellation, the series began reruns, and in its syndication, it finally became successful. In the 1970s, it was broadcast in 150 domestic markets and 60 international ones. The Associated Press called it “the show that won’t die.”

• The first Star Trek convention was held in January of 1972 in New York City. A few hundred fans were anticipated, but several thousand enthusiasts showed up. Four years later there were upwards of 250 Star Trek clubs with 25 organized conventions that hosted thousands of Trekkies. A 1975 Chicago convention marked the first time that the entire cast reunited, an event attended by more than 16,000 fans. • Having achieved fame as Captain Kirk, after the cancellation of the series in 1969, William Shatner went through tough times finding work during the early 1970s. With no new roles coming his way and very little money, the actor lost his home and lived in a camper on the back of a truck until a few minor roles came his way, which blossomed into higher-paying ones. • Although a popular catchphrase of the series is “Beam me up, Scotty,” in actuality, Captain Kirk never said that phrase to his Lieutenant Commander in any episode. However, other quotes are close – “Scotty, beam us up, “ “Beam me up,” “Scotty, beam me up,” and “Beam them out of there, Scotty.” • Although a specific city was never mentioned during the series, it was established that Captain Kirk was born

in the state of Iowa. A member of the Riverside, Iowa, City Council brought forth a motion that the community should proclaim itself the future birthplace of James T. Kirk. The council wrote to Gene Roddenberry in 1985 seeking permission for the honor, and Roddenberry agreed. Many Star Trek-related attractions and events can be found there and the community hosts an annual Trek Festival every June. Trekkies can view a replica of the U.S.S. Enterprise there, although the ship has been dubbed the U.S.S. Riverside.

The British were able to put the lighthouse back into service, but the Patriots brought out cannons to blow away the British equipment. * On March 9, 1781, the Siege of Pensacola begins as Spanish naval force of more than 40 ships and 3,500 men land at Santa Rosa Island in Florida. The flotilla survived a hurricane before beginning two months of constant artillery and cannon bombardment of British forts. * On March 11, 1818, "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus," by 21-year-old Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, is published. HOLLYWOOD -- This is a cautionary tale. While most people in Hollywood are behind the "Me Too" and "Time's Up," movements, the pendulum may be swinging too far to one side. Many men have been accused of inappropriate sexual behavior, starting with Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein, with large numbers of women coming forward accusing them. What makes many people nervous is the fact that in this country, people are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. When U.S. Sen. Al Franken was accused, he wasn't in the same ballpark as most of the others, and despite accepting responsibility for his actions, Democrats still called for him to step down. The Democrats should have waited for a full investigation before demanding he resign. Franken, anxious to avoid being dragged through the mud any further, left (of his own accord), while other politicos with far worse offenses remained in office. We lost a good senator. James Franco won a Golden Globe for "The Disaster Artist," but more than likely lost an Oscar nomination because of allegations made against him by five women. Even though he's denied the accusations, he's been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion. Accusations need to be thoroughly vetted and eventually heard in a court of law before heads roll. Franco has no less than 10 film projects in post-production, and not only do these charges affect him, but also the hundreds of other people who worked on these films. Can't wait to see what happens next! *** Zac Efron is known as a good singer ("High School Musical," TV films and "The Greatest Showman") and a hunk (after the "Baywatch" reboot with Dwayne Johnson), but

get ready for a game changer. Efron fans are going to see him become serial killer Ted Bundy in the upcoming film "Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile," currently shooting in Covington, Kentucky, with "Big Bang Theory's" Jim Parsons as prosecutor Larry Simpson, and Lili Collins as Bundy's girlfriend. Also in the cast are John Malkovich and "Burn Notice" star Jeffrey Donovan. Parsons' last film, "A Kid Like Jake," with Claire Danes, Octavia Spencer and Priyanka Chopra, screened at The Sundance Film Festival in January. *** George Clooney has returned to acting. He'll star and produce a six-part limited series for Hulu that is a remake of the 1970 film "Catch 22," based on the popular 1961 novel by Joseph Heller. It starred Oscar winners Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam and was directed by Mike Nichols. Clooney became known because of the series "The Facts of Life" (1985-1987) and just had to face "The Facts" -- he loves acting! (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: One of my favorite shows was "Orphan Black." Can you tell me more about the actress who played Delphine? Bryan F., via email A: Evelyne Brochu is behind the breakout role of Dr. Delphine Cormier on the Canadian science-fiction thriller, which made its way to the States via Amazon Prime. The series ended back in August, but she still gets recognized on the street. "It's surprising the places where people stop me and tell me that they've seen it and love it," she told me recently. "Everywhere I go, 'Orphan' fans are great. They are so smart and so loving. It's been a blessing to be a part of that group of talented people making the show." She's moved on to another talented group of people: the cast and crew of CBC's "X Company," which you can catch here in the U.S. on Wednesday nights at 10 p.m. ET on Ovation television. Loosely based on a true story, Evelyne plays Aurora Luft, the leader of the recruits from Camp X, the real-life first-known spy agency, which worked covertly for Allied interests during World War II. Of her character, Evelyne gushed: "I like that she's kickass and courageous. She puts her life on the line for what she feels is right. It's not always that you get to play these characters that have such a great, tremendous sense of self-sacrifice and justice. The team is super-young, and they have to learn as they go and toughen up. The fact that she's a woman makes her a great asset because she won't be someone to suspect. But it also puts her in the danger zone." *** Q: Can you tell me what Jamie Oliver is doing now? I've always enjoyed his personality, and his tough love when it comes to eating crappy foods. -- Gerry T., Mobile, Ala.

Evelyne Brochu Photo courtesy Evelyne Brochu

A: Jamie has his own show on Genius Kitchen, which is food-focused digital brand from Scripps Lifestyle Studios, an app that is available on mobile and connected devices. In "Jamie's Super Food," he travels to Greece, Costa Rica and beyond to share healthy cooking tips that anyone across the world can adopt and enjoy. New on-demand videos will arrive monthly via iOS and Android, as well as Apple TV, Amazon, YouTube and Roku. *** Q: How is Carrie Underwood doing? I heard she hurt herself recently. -- Lydia R., via Facebook A: The country-music superstar fell on some steps in her home, causing her to break her wrist and receive 40 to 50 stitches on her face. While people close to Carrie say they barely notice her injury, the singer told fans via her fanclub site: "When I am ready to get in front of a camera, I want you all to understand why I might look a bit different. ... I'm hoping that by then, the differences are minimal, but, again, I just don't know how it's all going to end up." A cacographer is someone who can't quite grasp the rules of spelling. * This might be a good time for a reminder of an obscure New Orleans law: In that city, it is illegal to curse at a firefighter while he or she is engaged in official duties. * It was in 1943 that Thomas Watson, who was then the chairman of International Business Machines (better known now as IBM), made the following public statement: "I think there is a world market for maybe five computers." * It was English novelist Eric Arthur Blair -- better known by his pen name, George Orwell -- who made the following sage observation: "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act." * While his wife, Abigail, was ill, President John Adams stayed with her for seven months at their home in Boston -- that's the longest any president has been away from the capital. * Are you a cacographer? You may not be, but if you spend any time at all online you've certainly run across

* If you're planning to visit the Hawaiian island of Kauai, you might want to trek up to Mount Waialeale. If you do, though, be sure to take an umbrella, as that mountain holds the distinction of receiving more rainfall than any other place on Earth, with an average of about 40 feet -- yes, feet -- of rain annually. * The English word "velvet" comes from a Latin term that means "shaggy hair." * You might already know that actor Mel Gibson grew up in Australia, but you might not know how he ended

Regular checkups are important to catch dental problems early. You did that, and hopefully Chip will respond to treatment without the need for surgery. Another way to prevent some dental issues, or keep them from getting worse, is to brush your dog's teeth regularly. Cat owners, don't think you're exempt, either. For both dogs and cats, brushing their gums and teeth gently about once a week takes about 10 minutes and can make a huge difference in their dental health.

GOOD DENTAL HEALTH FOR DOGS AND CATS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My dog "Chip" and I were at the veterinarian recently, and she told me that Chip may have an abscess near a molar. He is now taking an antibiotic to try and heal the abscess, but if that doesn't work he may lose a tooth. How did this happen, and how can I prevent it from happening again? -- Worried Mom in Wichita DEAR WORRIED MOM: Even healthy young dogs can develop dental problems. There are a number of possibilities as to why it happens -- sometimes it's blamed on a diet rich in soft, canned dog foods, or too many doggie treats. But many owners strictly regulate their pets' diet and yet still see signs of tooth decay and other issues like abscesses.

WE PICK-UP AND DELIVER

YOUR PET!

Pet supply stores and vets' offices carry meat-flavored toothpastes designed for pets (don't use human toothpaste). You can purchase a finger brush, or simply wrap a clean, soft cloth around your index finger. Put a little paste on the end of the brush or your finger, lift your pet's lip out of the way, and gently swipe from the gum line down each tooth. Give your pet a little treat and some love once you're done.

MONITOR, SPEAK, PLAY WITH PET REMOTELY DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I work most of the week from an office downtown, and only get one day to work at home and be around my dog. She does have a dog walker who takes her out near lunchtime when I'm not there, but I worry about her being alone at home. Is there any way

I can monitor her while I'm out, or even talk to her? -Brian in Alpharetta, Georgia DEAR BRIAN: There's quite a bit of technology coming onto the market that is aimed at helping you spend more time with your pet -- even when you're not home. If you already have a home security system with cameras installed that you can monitor remotely, aim a camera at your dog's favorite hangout spot to monitor what she's doing all day. With new products like Pet Cube, you can not only monitor her during the day, but speak to her and even deliver treats through an app on your phone. Another product, PlayDate, allows you to remotely control a ball through a mobile app and your home's Wi-Fi system. Activity trackers for pets are another new product on the market. Similar to a Fitbit or other smart watches, sensors worn on your dog's collar can track her movements and activity levels, so you can find out whether she's getting enough exercise during the day. While none of these are a good substitute for quality face time with your dog, they can bring you some peace of mind when you're away at work. His cousin, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, ravaged by polio, could not participate in sports that he had once loved -- particularly golf. But Roosevelt was able to swim and he was an avid yachtsman.

PRESIDENTIAL JOCKS Contrary to what the White House press corps may have you believe, the favorite pastime of the president is not dodgeball. Politics, by nature, is a competition, and as follows, many politicians like to take their game to the sporting fields as well. George Washington, the father of our country, was an expert shot and considered to be one of the toughest wrestlers of his era. He was known to eschew church for fox and hound hunts, a nod to his English upbringing. Abraham Lincoln, the other president we recognize on President's Day, was a state champion wrestler and a handball fanatic. This probably was due to the fact that he had very large hands -- and at 6-foot-4 he towered over the men of his day. Lincoln kept in shape, and once was said to have chopped wood for Union soldiers during the Civil War. After several minutes of vigorous chopping, he held the axe straight out and didn't quiver a bit. No soldier, it was said, could duplicate the feat.

His successor, Harry Truman, was a sportsman of a different kind. Accustomed to dealing with gangsters in downtown Kansas City, Truman was known to be a very good poker player -- the type who would drink bourbon with you all night (or morning) long and always keep it together. Truman also was known as being an avid speed walker. In fact, he would often conduct interviews with the press during his morning walks. The press gave up -- they couldn't match his stamina. Dwight Eisenhower's love of golf was legendary. Not only did Eisenhower create a sort of pitch and putt area on White House grounds, he scored a hole in one at a California country club just before his death. John F. Kennedy played football as a youth (so did Gerald Ford, who played center for Michigan in college), and his family was known for their ultra-competitive touch-football games. Still, rumors of Kennedy's nightlife and his penchant for hanging out with the Rat Pack led many in the press to wonder just what, exactly, he meant when he said he only played "touch." Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

1. Carlos Beltran had 32 home runs in 2012. 2. Allie Reynolds tossed both in 1951. 3. D.J. Dozier rushed for 1,002 yards as a freshman in 1983. 4. The Rockets swept Orlando in the 1995 NBA Finals. 5. The Philadelphia Flyers, in 1974 and 1975. 6. It was 1992. 7. Juli Inkster had 18.5 points in her Solheim Cup career. Paula Creamer (19.5 points) also passed Inkster in 2017.

The most avid presidential sportsman was Teddy Roosevelt. Roosevelt installed the White House tennis courts and even set up a boxing ring so he could spar with anyone who would take up the challenge. He also studied jujitsu and once tossed the Swiss minister to the floor during a luncheon -- no doubt enraged by his neutrality. Now that's a statesman.

ask for help carrying 40-pound bags of pet food? And when do you stop hanging from a ladder like a monkey while wielding a paintbrush? After making a few calls, my painting situation has been solved. A very nice young painter will be here to paint ceiling trim and the top 2 feet of walls while I, with feet firmly on the floor, paint everything else. I wonder what I will have to give up next.

WHEN AGE CATCHES UP WITH YOU At what point do we finally cave in to aging? It's different for all of us, but there are some things we eventually need to give up. Aren't there? For me the breaking point in "I can do it myself" came recently when I started planning for a bit of redecorating. Tops on my list was painting a few rooms. I'm no neophyte when it comes to a paintbrush and roller -- and a ladder. I painted my first room at age 16 and have painted at least some of every place I've ever lived since then. I have a 20-year-old ladder, a bit wobbly now but perfectly stable for zipping up and down while wearing a certain pair of shoes (also old) for grip. I even know just how far it's safe to lean to the left or right without the ladder tipping. I've felt perfectly safe.

SENSES FADE AS WE AGE Ninety-four percent of us will lose one or more our senses as we get older. A company called Sodexo, a leader in quality of life services, did a study with the University of Ottawa to help those who work with seniors understand how we perceive the world as those senses wane, especially in the long-term care field. The study results offered conclusions and help on topics such as: Hearing -- Most seniors over the age of 85 have hearing loss. Tips: Minimize sounds of heating and air conditioning systems, and provide a background of nature sounds and music. Smell -- The sense of smell starts to decrease at age 60. Tips: Utilize open kitchens so seniors can smell food being prepared. Provide fresh-air ventilation.

Until now. What, I've asked myself, would happen if I fell and there was no one here to help? I've thought about ways around that, including having a neighbor come over. But no, I wouldn't enjoy what has always been a happy solitary task with music blaring. So where do you draw your line in the battle against aging? When do you stop shoveling snow? When do you

Vision -- Weakened eye muscles, diminished vision. Tips: Use high-contrast colors helps seniors navigate corridors and see all the food on their plate. Avoid clutter. Install minimum-glare flooring. Touch -- Each year we seniors lose 1 percent of our ability to perceive vibrations or pressure. Tips: Animal therapy can provide opportunities to touch. Beware injuries to feet, since they often can go unnoticed.

Taste -- Our ability to taste starts to decline at age 40 in women and age 50 in men. Tips: Medications can alter the taste of foods; look for alternative medications. Provide foods with texture, and use a variety of spices and herbs. In addition to the sensory loses, seniors can experience loneliness, which can result in aggression and stress. Help by providing a regular schedule of activities and social interaction. For study results, as well as tools Sodexo created to help us find quality long-term care, go online to sodexo.com and search for "How and Why the Five Senses Matter for Quality of Life." Compared with other fruits, avocados rank among the highest for magnesium, vitamin E and folic acid. Mexican Haas avocados also are high in beta carotene and have 60 percent more potassium than bananas. If you're keeping an eye on your waistline, avocados are perfect for a low-carb diet.

Pairing Mexican Haas avocados with citrus fruits takes an ordinary bowl of salad greens to a new taste level. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc., and Angela Shelf Medearis

Hass avocados are native to Mexico and grow in the Michoacan area west of Mexico City. The climate and growing conditions are perfect because of the rich volcanic soil. Mexico grows more than 40 percent of the world's avocados and is one of the leading year-round suppliers to the United States.

MEXICAN HAAS AVOCADOS GO BEYOND GUACAMOLE

Check the sticker on the avocado before you buy to be sure you're getting the high-quality Haas type from Mexico. An avocado is ready to serve when the skin turns from dark green to nearly black and yields when pressed gently with a thumb. Firm, dark-green avocados will ripen in a day or two at room temperature, and even faster in a brown paper bag on your kitchen counter. Placing an apple inside the bag also speeds up the process. Ripe avocados can be kept in the refrigerator for several days. You should be able to remove the short stem easily when an avocado is ripe.

Hass avocados from Mexico are prized by chefs because of their delicate flavor and smooth, buttery texture. Mexican Haas avocados provide a rich, creaminess and a distinctive flavor to a variety of dishes. One of the best things about Mexican Haas avocados is that they contain the good "heart-healthy" fats that are so important in a balanced diet. They're also packed with nutrients -- 20 vitamins and minerals, fiber, folate and potassium.

To open an avocado, cut lengthwise around the pit. Gently twist to separate the halves. To remove the pit, place the avocado half on a counter and carefully strike the pit with the blade of sharp knife and twist to remove. Scoop out the flesh with a spoon. To prevent cut or prepared avocados from darkening, sprinkle with lemon or lime juice. Then place a layer of clear plastic wrap in direct contact with the avocado, cover tightly and refrigerate.

For mini cymbals, thread a bead 3-inches down on a wooden skewer. Glue in place, then thread a flat canning-jar lid with a hole poked through its center, onto the skewer. Add another bead and a second lid. Top with a bead and glue in place. Tape to the side of a can. Hit with "drumsticks" as you play on the mini drum set.

BOTTLE SHAKERS --Pour dry beans in a plastic bottle and glue the cap shut. Paint and decorate with colorful tape and stickers. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Her latest book is "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families."

HOMEMADE INSTRUMENTS TO DRUM AND SHAKE When I heard the beat of the drums, I knew I was really back in Africa. It had been years since I taught in a secondary school in the remote Ubangi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Accessible only by boat or plane, I was fortunate to return recently to this tropical land of mangoes, butterflies and poinsettias as large as trees to see former students, and participate with Congolese women's groups devoted to hygiene, finance, agriculture and clean-water projects. It was the rhythmic welcomes in villages, each drum with its own sound blended with the tones and beats of rattles and voices, that got my feet stamping and hands clapping. The sounds are pervasive. All ages still beat drums to transmit messages, even while others simultaneously dial up their cellphones to do the same. Percussion instruments are universal, really, and at their most basic level play an important part in a child's development. A simple rattle sparks an array of sensory experiences for a baby. No wonder a growing toddler enjoys finding anything that clangs to bang together like cymbals. Later, their fascination may lead them to musical training, which has been proven to increase math scores and self-expression.

(c) 2018 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

Here is how to assemble a mini drum set and shaker to further your child's musical journey:

DRUM SET -- Paint various sizes of clean soup and vegetable tin cans in bright colors. Decorate with pompons and other favorite crafty charms. -- Wrap strong paper cut in circles over the open end of some of the cans. Hold paper in place with rubber bands. Turn remaining cans open-side down on a table. Use wooden and metal spoons to tap out a rhythm. The eraser ends of unsharpened pencils make good drumsticks. For fun, play a game of "echo." Hit the cans and challenge others to repeat what you have done.

ANSWER: In bacteriology, most of what we did was in incubators at 37 degrees Celsius (about 99 degrees F), an optimal growth temperature for most pathogenic bacteria in or on a growth medium. However, I was surprised to find that hotter temperatures, in general, tend to reduce both viruses and bacteria in the air. So there's no validity to the employee's claim. The people controlling the temperature (the staff) probably are more comfortable at a cooler temperature than the seniors taking advantage of the senior center (there are many reasons for this). Your suggestion of 75 F seems a perfectly reasonable temperature to me, but maybe it's worth finding out what most of the community wants. *** DEAR DR. DEAR DR. ROACH: The senior center in my community is kept at a temperature that I and many other seniors find too cool for our comfort. After two hours of playing Scrabble or watching a film, we feel chilled to the bone. We have complained many times to the management, with no change. Recently, I overheard an employee explain to a complainer that the center maintains the cool temperature to keep the germ count in the air down in order to promote a healthy environment. I know very warm temperatures can promote germ growth (anyone in Bacteriology 101 has seen it proven), but would raising the temperature from 72 F to 75 F have any bad effect on the air quality? -- H.L.

The good news is that you can cultivate a new microbiota, formerly known as gut flora, in just 24 hours — by changing what you eat. Bacteria that live in our intestinal tract, also known as gut bugs, flourish off of colorful, plant-based foods. The latest studies on microbiota continue to show us how the process works, which explains why the mere mention of gut bacteria sparks conversations in both research labs and newsrooms. Healthy gut bugs act like quarterbacks in our intestinal tracts: They call the shots and control the tempo by

In the past, more than once I have had to call my pharmacy and have refills sent to another address. This doctor will not respond to calls from a pharmacy for refills; only a visit will do. Is there anything that can be done other than changing doctors? -- A. ANSWER: I wouldn't say that this practice is unethical. Physicians need to decide for themselves how comfortable they are in treating chronic conditions without seeing their patients for a prolonged period. His method ensures very regular follow-up, and he is likely to find changes to your condition more quickly than if he wrote yearly prescriptions.

On the other hand, many people don't need such close follow-up, and it is significantly less convenient for many. The bottom line is, no matter what his motivation for such a policy, those who find this too much of an inconvenience probably would do better with a different provider. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. 754 224 2985 or 754 367 4174 with your estimated value for insurance purposes. Never advertise the value of your collections. Make sure there is a barrier between the exhibit and the public, perhaps shelves behind a large table, or a locked cabinet. Don't exhibit posters or prints in a sunny window. Make sure the pieces are not remounted or altered. Decide before the show how the collection will be packed and returned.

'THE CHAIR' Danish modern chairs were offered in stores in the U.S. in the early 1950s. The Scandinavian designs were inspired by earlier furniture: the 18th-century English chair, a Chinese Ming dynasty chair, a Japanese director's chair. Many of the modern chairs were made of handcarved curved wooden pieces joined with dovetails to make a comfortable back, arms, seat and sides. Teak, oak, rosewood and light-colored woods were used with fabric, leather or caned seats.

A non-profit show may be run by people with no idea of the cost of old things. We loan pieces to teach the public about the past and the joys of collecting, but we had a sundrenched poster fade to unreadable, a clever advertising sign stolen and a figurine come back missing a hand.

Hans Wegner of Denmark created his most famous chair in 1949. It is now known as "The Chair." It was made and sold by Hansen/Knoll company for many years. "The Chairs" were chosen for John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in the first-ever televised presidential debate in 1960. One of "The Chairs," made in about 1969 and featuring a leather seat, the Knoll label and Hansen stamps, sold in 2016 for $610. Later versions of this iconic chair are available in shops and shows today. *** Q: Should I loan a number of my antiques for a fundraising event? They want me to set up my exhibit and leave it for two weeks, but I am concerned about security and other problems. What should I worry about? None of the pieces are extremely valuable, but they are among my favorites, and some are family heirlooms. A: There is always a risk when you exhibit your collection. The exhibit should be in a secure building with a 24-hour security guard or electronic system. Security usually is good during a show, but during setup and after show hours there are people who can get into the room. Before you pack, take pictures and list every item

"The Chair," a famous and comfortable chair, sold for $610. It is one of the 200 designs for chairs created by Hans Wegner of Denmark.
