IT’S A FACT • The Pekingese was bred in the Chinese city of Peking (now called Beijing) and is one of the oldest breeds. It’s one of the breeds most closely related to the wolf, along with the Akita, Malamute, Basenji, and Shar-Pei.

• The Shar-Pei is known for its deep wrinkles. The breed originated in Canton, China. The name means “sand skin” and refers to the texture of its short, rough, wrinkled coat. A Shar-Pei’s tongue is a blue-black color, making it the only other dog besides the Chow Chow that does not have a pink tongue. • The Corgi originates in Wales. In Welsh, the name means “dwarf-dog” from “cor” meaning dwarf and “gi” meaning dog. Corgis are closely related to Siberian Huskies. Despite their short stature, they were bred as herding dogs. Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 Corgis since she was a young child.

• The Papillon derives its name from the long and fringed hair on the ears that resemble butterfly wings, and the French word for “butterfly” is papillon. They were bred as rat-catchers. Marie Antoinette owned one who reportedly ran out from under her skirt after she was executed.

• The Great Pyrenees was bred by Basque shepherds who inhabited the Pyrenees Mountains of southern France and northern Spain. The Pyrenees Mountains were named for Pyrene, a mythical Greek princess who was raped by Hercules, gave birth to a serpent, was killed by wild animals, and buried under the mountain range that now bears her name.

DOG BREEDS (continued):

• The Yorkshire Terrier is a small dog breed developed during the 19th century in Yorkshire, England, to catch rats in clothing mills. During World War II, a Yorkie named Smoky saved the lives of soldiers by dragging a communications cable through an 8-inch-wide, 60-footlong drainage culvert. • The Chihuahua was named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The word means “dry sandy place.” The Chihuahua is the smallest of all purebred dogs. A Chihuahua named Milly at 3.8 inches tall (9.65 cm) is the world’s smallest dog. At the age of 2 years old, she weighed 1 pound (.45 kg). In a comparison of brain to body size ratio, the Chihuahua has the largest sized brain. The Taco Bell dog’s name was Gidget and she was in many commercials (not all for Taco Bell). She died in 2009 at the age of 15. • “Ticking” is a strong white material used to cover and protect mattresses and pillows. The Bluetick Coonhound has a white coat underneath a network of black spots, and the overall effect makes the dog look like it’s covered by blue ticking. If a dog has a white coat with brown spots, it’s called red ticking. The Bluetick Coonhound was bred as a hunting dog in the Southeastern U.S. and was only recognized as an established independent breed in 1946. • Basset Hounds were bred for the purpose of pursuing rabbits, using their keen sense of smell to track them down. Only Bloodhounds have a better sense of smell than Basset Hounds do. “Basset” comes from the French word “bas” for “low” and refers to the low-slung stature of the dog. It has the longest ears of any breed, with Bloodhounds a close second. The ears funnel scents to the nose. Because they are bigboned with heavy bodies and deep chests, they are poor swimmers. • There are two types of Husky: the Siberian Husky and the Alaskan Malamute. The word “husky” started out in the mid-1800s as “hoskey dog” or “esky dog” which both refer to “Eskimo dog.” The Siberian Husky originated in northeastern Siberia and was bred by the Chukchi Eskimos of northeastern Asia to pull heavy loads long distances across rough terrain in difficult conditions with very little food and no warmth. They were also used to herd reindeer and as watchdogs. Huskies have a thick double coat that keeps them well insulated. Their undercoat is short and warm, while the overcoat is long and water-resistant. Their almond-shaped eyes allow them to squint to keep out snow. • Pomerania is a region on the southern shore of the Baltic Sea in Central Europe, split between Germany and Poland. The name comes from the Slavic “po more” meaning “by the sea.” It’s where the Pomeranian was bred. They were bred from the large sled dogs of the north, making them another breed closely related to wolves. • The word “terrier” comes from the old French “chien terrier” meaning literally “earth dog.” A cairn is a pile of rocks used to mark the way, from the Gaelic “carn” meaning “a heap of stones.” A cairn terrier was trained to flush small animals that live underneath and inside cairns. A cairn terrier named Terry played Toto in the 1939 film “The Wizard of Oz.” • The word “spaniel” comes from the Old French word “espaignol” meaning “Spanish dog.” Spaniels were bred as hunting dogs and have been around since the 14th century. Today there are 25 different types of Spaniels. One English breed was developed specifically for tracking woodcocks. These dogs are now known as Cocker Spaniels. Springer Spaniels were named for their ability to flush or “spring” game birds. King Charles Spaniels became popular due to their association with King Charles II of England, who ruled in the 1600s and had a fondness for the breed.

• The story goes that the Chinese word “tsa” means “mix” and is pronounced “chow” as in “chow mein” with “mein” meaning “noodles.” The word “chow” also came to mean a meal, being a mix of food dishes. When dock workers were unloading ships laden with all sorts of Chinese goods, they referred to the cargo as “chow chow” meaning a mixed up mish-mash of items. When they unloaded a breed of Chinese dogs, the dogs also were called Chow Chows. Other people claim that “chow chow” is Chinese for “puffy lion dog.” Chows are famous for having black tongues, but a Chow’s tongue is pink at birth. • Cecil Rhodes was a British politician and businessman who bought up diamond mines in southern Africa, founded the DeBeers Diamond Company, worked to develop economic progress in Africa, and subsequently had a country named after him: Rhodesia. The country has since been split up and renamed, becoming Zambia and Zimbabwe. People working in Africa needed to protect their livestock from lions. They cross-bred European dogs with the dogs the local tribes used that were remarkable for the Mohawk-style ridge of backwards-facing hair that lined their spine. The Rhodesian Ridgeback, a type of hound, can keep a lion at bay.

* On May 7, 1789, President George Washington attends a ball in his honor. The event provided a model for the first official inaugural ball, which later became an annual tradition. The record number of inaugural balls attended in one night by a president is 15, set by President Bill Clinton in 1997. * On May 18, 1861, an obscure California newspaper casts first lady Mary Todd Lincoln in an unflattering light, saying she took it upon herself to appoint a stranger -- Mr. W.S. Wood -- to any office he desired. The reporter suggested that she had been smitten with Mr. Wood's handsome features, luxuriant whiskers and graceful carriage. * On May 14, 1916, a lead article in the Times of London proclaims that an insufficiency of munitions is leading to defeat for Britain on the battlefields of World War I. It sparked a crisis on the home front, forcing the government to create a Ministry of Munitions. * On May 19, 1935, T.E. Lawrence, known to the world as Lawrence of Arabia, dies as a retired Royal Air Force mechanic living in a simple cottage under an assumed name. The legendary war hero, author and archaeological scholar succumbed to injuries suffered in a recent motorcycle accident. * On May 15, 1942, Lt. Ronald Reagan, a cavalry officer, applies for reassignment to the Army Air Force. The actor and future president was assigned as a public-relations officer for the First Motion Picture Unit. * On May 11, 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company announces it has developed a tubeless tire, a technological innovation that would make automobiles safer

and more efficient. In 1952, Goodrich won patents, and the tubeless tire quickly became standard on most new automobiles. * On May 13, 1958, anti-American demonstrators pelt then-Vice President Richard Nixon's limousine with rocks in Caracas, Venezuela. Despite warnings not to send Nixon to Venezuela, where anti-American sentiment ran particularly high, he went anyway. * On May 12, 1963, Bob Dylan walks out on "The Ed Sullivan Show" after network censors rejected the song he planned to perform, "Talkin' John Birch Paranoid Blues." Sullivan had heard the song days before and had no concerns. * On May 9, 1971, the last original episode of the sitcom "The Honeymooners," starring Jackie Gleason, airs. Although a perennial rerun favorite in syndication, only 39 episodes actually aired. * On May 8, 1984, the Soviet Union announces that it will boycott the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. It was a response to the United States' decision to boycott the 1980 Moscow games. Thirteen other communist nations also refused to compete. * On May 10, 1990, the government of the People's Republic of China announces the release of 211 people arrested during the massive protests held in Tiananmen Square in Beijing in June 1989. Observers viewed it as an attempt by China to dispel much of the terrible publicity it received for its brutal suppression of the 1989 protests. (c) 2018 Hearst Communications, Inc. HOLLYWOOD -- "Black Panther" has displaced "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" as the No. 9 top-grossing film of all time and has its sights set on No. 8 "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" (2011) and No. 7 "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015). It's interesting to note that "Black Panther" star Chadwick Boseman also is one of the stars of "Avengers: Infinity War," which opened April 27 (sure to challenge "Panther"). "Panther's" Michael B. Jordan, currently filming the sequel "Creed II" for a Nov. 9 opening, again with Sly Stallone, also stars in the HBO reboot of Ray Bradbury's sci-fi classic "Fahrenheit 451" (1966), with Michael Shannon and Keir Dullea, and "Raising Dion" for Netflix. "Twelve Years a Slave" Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o has co-starred in three "Star Wars" films: "The Force Awakens" (2015), "The Last Jedi" (2017) and the upcoming "Episode IX," due December 2019. She also stars in "Little Monsters" (a zombie film), with Josh Gad and Alexander England of "Alien: Covenant" (2017), and a new "Charlie's Angels" film, with "Twilight" saga star Kristen Stewart, directed by "Hunger Games" star Elizabeth Banks. *** Five-time "Mike & Molly" Emmy-nominee Melissa McCarthy (she won in 2012) and a three-time Emmy nominee for hosting "Saturday Night Live" (she won in 2017) has made 26 films, was nominated for an Oscar for "Bridesmaids" (2011) and has had two top-grossing films: "Tammy" (2014) and "The Boss" (2016), which she produced and wrote with husband Ben Falcone (who directed). She's up next in "Life of the Party," written and produced by them and starring her, with Maya Rudolph and Julie Bowen (out May 11).

Chadwick Boseman in "Black Panther" Marvel Studios/Disney

McCarthy is in the comedy "Puppet," directed by Brian Henson -- which she, Falcone and Henson co-produced -- with Maya Rudolph, Joel McHale and Elizabeth Banks, opening Aug. 17. McCarthy also is taking a serious dramatic plunge as celebrated 1960s-80s writer Lee Israel, famous for profiling Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estee Lauder and Dorothy Kilgallen, to name some, with Richard E. Grant and Jane Curtin, due out Oct. 19. *** Twelve-time Emmy nominee Jon Hamm, who finally won one for his last year in "Mad Men" (2015), is done with those often funny, sometimes annoying H&R Block ads now that tax season is over. He's receiving rave reviews for "Beirut," with Rosamund Pike, and he also has two more films coming out: "Tag," with Ed Helms, arriving June 15, and "Bad Times at the El Royale," with Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Dakota Johnson and Russell Crowe, hitting screens Oct. 5. Surviving tax ads and rebounding with rave film reviews proves he's not just a "Hamm" actor ... ouch! (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I was watching "Bridge to Terabithia" the other day with my kids, and it made me wonder whatever happened to the young actress who played May Belle. She was so good! -- Katie R., via email A: Bailee Madison has been a busy actress since the family-adventure film of 2007. She's been in tons of stuff, including "Wizards of Waverly Place," "Trophy Wife" and "The Fosters." Presently you can catch her in the "Good Witch" series on Hallmark (which airs Sunday nights at 9/8c), where she plays Catherine Bell's daughter, Grace. I spoke with her recently, and she told me about the joy of co-starring in a blockbuster like "Terabithia," as well as how much fun it is to play a witch's daughter on "Good Witch." Of "Terabithia," Bailee raved: "I was in New Zealand for over six months, and it's one of the most beautiful places I've visited. The black-sand beaches and just the culture -- it was such a special time for me. That movie is so iconic to so many people on so many levels, and I got to be a part of bringing a book to life. Now that I'm older, I've read the book and I've talked to kids who are reading the book -- it's such a beautiful thing that I got to be a part of it. I'm so grateful."

She's also grateful to be co-starring in the hit show "Good Witch," and she told me a bit about this season. "I have to say without a doubt this is my favorite journey for Grace. She's a very good girl; she doesn't go out. She's that picture-perfect daughter who every mother dreams of having. But she's also a teenager who's dealing with newfound insecurities. She's in love for the first time. I think what's cool is she's a lot more imperfect. I found it really refreshing to get to play that." *** Q: Can you give me any news about the next season of "Stranger Things"? -- Kyle T., via Twitter

Cary Elwes Depositphotos

A: As you wish, Kyle. Season three brings us Wesley/The Dread Pirate Roberts (of "The Princess Bride") himself when Cary Elwes joins the cast as Mayor Kline. He's described as "handsome, slick and sleazy ... your classic '80s politician." Also coming aboard is Jake Busey, playing Bruce, "a journalist for 'The Hawkins Post' with questionable morals and a sick sense of humor." This new season also will bring us eight brand-new episodes; however, there is talk that Netflix might not drop the series until early 2019 instead of its usual Halloween release. I'll keep you posted on that. *** Q: I need more "GLOW"! -- Jennie F., via email A: You're gonna get more "GLOW," and soon! The 10-episode season two drops June 29 on Netflix. And if the show's premiere-reveal video is any indication, season two will be just as fun and outrageous as the first. WHY DO INDOOR CATS NEED LICENSE TAGS? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I received a notice from a city department that I have to buy a license for each of my cats. I get them vaccinated regularly, and they're purely indoor cats, so why should I bother to pay for two license tags? -- Kate J., via email DEAR KATE: As I've written before, indoor pets can escape to the outdoors, which is why it's a good idea to vaccinate them on schedule, as you've done. In cities and municipalities that require them, license tags provide additional identification in case your cats do get out. Financially, it's a good idea to go ahead and get the license tags. Several cities are cracking down on pet licensing. For example, Sacramento fines owners up to $300 for ignoring notices to license their pets -- a steep increase over the initial cost of the license tags: $20 per year for dogs, $10 for cats. Broward County, Florida, also has a $300 fine in place. Chicago is sending out notices, as registration purchases dropped from 27,000 in 2011 to less than 13,000 in 2017.

It offers licenses for 1- or 3-year terms. And Seattle fines unlicensed owners $125, with additional fines possible for offenses like "failure to display pet license tags" (an additional $54).

Find out how to register and pay for your cats' licenses at your city's website. You may be able to do it all online. Check with your cats' veterinarian as well to see if the vet's office can help you obtain licenses.

Cities locate unlicensed pets through vaccination records. It's a bureaucratic necessity, and annoying, but the tags aren't that expensive, while the fines for not doing so can be.

He believed that inventions should benefit all of humanity, not just himself. * Many people know American counterculture figure Ken Kesey as the author of the 1962 novel "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," which presents a disturbing portrait of life in a mental institution. It's less well known, though, that Kesey got an inside view of the system when he worked as a janitor in a mental hospital before he became famous. * Those who study such things say that a typical newspaper contains just 30 percent editorial content -- 70 percent of the paper you buy is taken up by advertising. * The last country in the world to get telephones was the South Asian nation of Bhutan, and both television and the Internet were banned there until 1999. Those previous groups obviously didn't work out, though; in fact, at one point Lennon broke a washboard over a bandmate's head during a dispute. After the Beatles' success, though, Lennon apologized in style: He bought the poor guy a supermarket. * In Germany, Rice Krispies don't say "Snap, Crackle, Pop"; they say "Knisper, Knasper, Knusper." *** Thought for the Day: "A hick town is one in which there is no place to go where you shouldn't be." -- Alexander Woollcott (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

green stalks. The flavor of the leaves is milder than the root end. Spring onions will keep for five to seven days when wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator. Spring onions are a great source of vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and fiber. They also contain a substance that prevents the formation of blood clots. Eating onions helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

SEASON SPRING WITH ONIONS Wild onions were among the first foods that mankind gathered and ate, and are one of the first signs of spring. Onions are in the allium family along with garlic and shallots. There's nothing like the intense flavor (or the smell) of an onion! Spring onions are my favorite type of onion, both as an ingredient and as a vibrant, flavorful garnish. Spring onions also are called green onions, young onions, pencil onions and scallions. Scallions aren't as fully ripened as a green onion and should not have a bulb. Spring onions are the milder, first stage of a mature onion. If left in the ground to grow, they'll form into an onion bulb.

To prepare the spring onions, cut off the roots and peel away the outer layer to remove any lingering dirt. Next, rinse the leaves, spreading them gently with your fingers to get at the dirt in the crevices. Both parts are edible. Although the white bulb is listed most often as part of recipes, the green leaves also should be incorporated into recipes and as a garnish.

While spring onions are best served raw, they're also delicious grilled or sauteed. They should be added during the final stages of a recipe for maximum flavor. This recipe is a showcase for two vegetables that will brighten up your dinner plate with the colors and flavors of spring!

1 tablespoon unsalted margarine 2 cloves garlic, minced

Use the leaves to add a wonderful burst of green color, to tie up appetizers into a package or to use as a frilly, edible garnish. To curl the ends, cut off the roots and all but about 3 inches of the green tops. Slice the tops lengthwise down from the green end into the white section. Put the leaves in cold water and chill for several hours to curl them.

2 pounds green asparagus with pencil-thin stalks Larger, older spring onions may have limp or faded stalks and a stronger flavor than the smaller ones. 1 tablespoon dried Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1. Trim the woody bottoms from the asparagus and discard. Slice asparagus diagonally into thirds and set aside. Slice spring onions or green onions in 1/4-inch slices and set aside. 2. Add the olive oil and the margarine to a medium pan over medium heat. When the butter begins to bubble, add the spring onions, garlic and Italian seasoning, and saute until the onions begin to soften, about 2-4 minutes. 3. Add the asparagus and sprinkle the vegetables with the salt and black pepper. Combine the ingredients and saute, uncovered for 7-10 minutes or until the asparagus can be pierced easily with a fork. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. •It’s estimated that about 150 people are killed every year from falling coc coconuts. •Coconuts aren’t ju just for eating! The fiber of the husk, known as coir, is used in the manufacture of ropes, bru brushes, sacks, mattresses, and can also be used to bu buff floors. The leaves are used in broom-making, tthe weaving of baskets and mats, and as thatch for roofs. The woo wood from the tree trunk makes for an outsta outstanding building material for bridges, h es houses, and boats, due to its straightnes ness, strength, and salt resistance. In fa fact, in 1978, Philippines Ferdinand M Marcos commissioned the constructtion of the Coconut Palace, a guest house with seven bedrooms, for the visit of Pope John Paul II to the Philippines. The structure, built of 70% coconut lumber, cost $10 milllion to erect. Ironically, the Pope refu fused to stay there, believing it was too lavish.

A tall coconut palm tree might yield up to 75 de ed fruits a pear, provided pit is grown under propes er conditions. It takes six to ten years for a rst palm to produce its first sn’t fruit, and the tree doesn’t tion reach peak production for at least 15 years.

•Do y you remember the 1971 hit song “Coconu “Coconut,” recorded by Harry Nilsson? The song, which was on the Billboard charts for 10 weeks, advised a girl with a stomachache to “put the lime e in the coconut and drink ‘em both together,” then ““call “c all him in the mo morning.”

The palm is grown in more h the Philthan 80 countries, with nd India leadippines, Indonesia, and ction. ing the pack in production. More than 20 billion coconuts are grown each year. se sailors aboard the ship of explor•In the 1500s, Portuguese covered the fruit and thought the er Vasco da Gama discovered three small holes on the shell looked like a human face. As a result, they named it “coco,” meaning “grinning face.” Much later, the word “nut” was tacked on to the end. •The fruit is not really a nut at all, but rather a drupe, from the same family as peaches, plums, and cherries. A full-sized coconut weighs about 3.2 lbs. (1.44 kg). The white fleshy part of the fruit is called the meat, which is rich in manganese, potassium, and copper. It’s the meat that’s used in sweet treats such as macaroons. Dried coconut meat is known as copra, which is often processed to produce oil, soaps, and cosmetics.

tute for human blood plasma, and as an IV for severely dehydrated individuals. Coconut milk isn’t the same as coconut water. It’s lower in sugar and its fat content is upwards of 20%. Just like cow’s milk, coconut cream will rise to the top, separating from the milk. •In Malaysia and Thailand, a certain primate, the pigtailed macaques, has been trained for 400 years to harvest coconuts. A single macaque can pick 800 to 1,000 coconuts per day, and is even trained to tell the difference between ripe and unripe fruits.

FRESH-AIR FUN "Hey, come on, Donna, follow us ... we're playing loopde-loop," shouted barefoot 5-year-old Eva gleefully, as she followed the freshly drawn trail in the damp sand that her older brother was marking ahead of her with his "magic" driftwood. Lured into the playful "follow the leader" game, I couldn't help but feel their childlike freedom to run forever in the salty air. Spring is the season to get in the great outdoors and discover the elements of surprise that await your family. Here are some ideas for fresh-air entertainment:

TIPTOE THROUGH THE TULIPS If you live near or enjoy traveling to Washington State's Skagit Valley; Holland, Michigan; or even the Netherlands, take in the glorious colors of fields of tulips and daffodils in bloom. In colder climes, conservatories and greenhouses also provide an opportunity to walk pathways of spring's first flowers.

SKIP STONES On the shoreline of a calm lake or river, find flat stones. With bent knees, stand with feet parallel to the water's edge. Throw a stone sidearm with a snap of your wrist so that it skips off the surface of the water. Keep practicing until your stone skips several times.

PRACTICE CONCENTRATION When it's time to take a break, sit around a circle and play "First one to laugh." Choose a leader who tells everyone to keep a serious face. Then as he makes gestures,

Tulip Time, Holland, Mich.

players have to imitate them without laughing. The last person left who keeps a straight face is the leader for the next round. Or, play the "silent game." When the leader announces that the game begins, everyone has to remain quiet and listen to nature. The person who is silent the longest wins. Hiccups don't count!

CLASSIC SCHOOLYARD GAMES Play hopscotch, marbles, four square, kick the can, or set up a relay race.

MAKE A TOUCH-ANDFEEL GUESSING GAME When you return from the outdoors, empty out nature finds and other items from the adventure. An older child or adult may sort through them and place interesting

shapes and textures of things "players" will feel in separate tall containers. For example, dried seaweed from the beach in one container and shells, bark, feathers or leftover potato chips from lunch in another. Without peeking, each person places her hand in each container to determine what's inside. Encourage players to describe what it feels like (prickly, puffy, smooth) as they guess the contents. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. BUYING DEMOCRACY Let's face it, the United States of America's government is not a democracy like the textbook propaganda claims. No matter the intent of the founders, we have evolved into a pay-to-play oligarchy, where money rules. I have to say, I appreciate it when someone is so honest about his or her own dishonesty. Rarely, however, is someone so candid as Mick Mulvaney. He now heads the Trump administration's Office of Management and Budget, and even more damagingly, has been appointed by the president, on an interim basis, to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The CFPB was formed out of the rubble of the economic debacle in 2008 to, as the name suggests, protect the consumer, particularly against the excesses and outright thievery of the financial industry. Over consistent Republican objections, the agency issued regulations that would offer some federal protections against these behemoths whose executives ran the monetary system into the ground with their greed. Until Trump. Donald Trump came into office demonizing regulation, and he certainly has lived up to his campaign rhetoric by gutting the rules that were set out to create a greed shield. Mulvaney is a willing executioner. He had already established a harsh record as a South Carolina GOP congressman, a tea party favorite for his limited-government extremism -- except when it came to protecting the rich, particularly those who threw crumbs of their ill-gotten gains at politicians like him. Now in his new role, there he was, speaking to a group of bankers (what else?) when he took his amazing detour into remarkable candor: Speaking of his days as a congressman, he said that, when it came to scheduling meetings: "If you're a lobbyist who never gave us money, I didn't talk to you. If you're a lobbyist who gave us money, I might talk to you." There's no "might" about it, actually. Like just about every American politician who wishes to get elected and re-elected, a huge amount of time is spent fundraising -- which is to say groveling for campaign contributions, which is another way to describe legalized bribes. This corruption saturates our political system. It is bipartisan; Democrats are as guilty of selling their souls as Republicans. It's just that the Trumpsters are more blatant about it. Scott Pruitt is the latest one to wallow in the self-created muck. His public life has been lavishly subsidized by energy companies that don't want to be bothered by gov-

ernment limitations. In Pruitt's native Oklahoma, where he was a state senator and later attorney general, he had a reputation of opposition to anything his private-industry benefactors disliked. Naturally Donald Trump picked him to head the Environmental Protection Agency, where after being barely confirmed by the U.S. Senate, he has been hellbent on gutting rules long established to protect the planet from corporate profiteering. He also has been hellbent on living a cushy life in Washington, financed by these same fat cats (think of his lowcost condo accommodations) and more egregiously, the taxpayers (think of prohibited first-class airfare, etc.). Again, Pruitt and the other Trumpsters' conduct is not unique and certainly not limited to Republicans. The Clintons have faced similar accusations. It was Will Rogers who described Congress as the "best that money can buy." Regrettably, that stain covers our entire political system. know you. Sign a new signature card every six months so your handwriting sample is current.) If you spot personality changes in a senior, the cause might be physical -- or it might be a result of abuse. Ask what's going on. If a senior who used to dress immaculately is now wearing the same clothes for days in a row, ask. If a senior is no longer as sociable or doesn't participate in previous activities, ask. If you spot bruises or injury, ask.

KNOW THE SIGNS OF SENIOR ABUSE Sometimes it takes watchful eyes to keep seniors safe. Whether it's physical, emotional or financial abuse, or any other kind, those who come in contact with seniors can look for signs that all is not well. In banking, if you spot a senior who seems distressed and who repeatedly takes large sums of money out of an account (or changes his or her routine), that senior might be a victim of abuse or a scam. (Seniors, don't use the drive-up teller window. Go inside so staff can get to

In a caregiver or hospital situation, you might see lack of care or physical abuse. A neighbor who's had relatives move in might suddenly change his or her routines. At home, the senior might be denied food or medicine or mail. If you want more information to help seniors, go online to the National Center on Elder Abuse (www.ncea.aoa. gov) or call 1-855-500-3537. You'll find information on getting help for housing, in-home services, long-term care, nutrition ... and abuse. Seniors, if you think you're being abused in any way, call the police. DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband will be 82 in July. About three years ago, I became aware of his sudden movements during the night. We were renting in Florida, and the bed was smaller than our bed at home. His body would jerk, sometimes strongly. These movements would not wake him; he just seemed asleep. He does not remember anything about it in the morning. We went to see his doctor at home, who said that he is in very good shape. He did not know what caused the movements. We are once again staying in Florida, and his body movements are the same, sometimes strong enough to shake the bed. I find it hard to believe that this is normal. Do you have any advice? -- B.N.S. ANSWER: This is a classic description of a condition called periodic limb movements of sleep. These usually involve the legs, and typically involve pointing the toe while flexing the ankle, knee and sometimes the hip. Each movement lasts a few seconds and repeats every 30 seconds or so. Your story that he doesn't remember them is very typical: It's usually the sleeping partner who notices them. PLMS is more common in older adults. PLMS by itself is not a disease and does not need treatment; however, it is often associated with other conditions, especially restless leg syndrome (Willis-Ekbom disease), rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (which includes sometimes violent movements) and narcolepsy. Since your husband apparently has no symptoms, he does not need treatment. However, he should be specifically asked about symptoms like an urge to move the legs while awake, abnormal feelings in the legs, difficulty falling asleep and sleepiness during the day. These would be likely to indicate RLS or its close relative, periodic limb movement disorder.

Diseases linked to unhealthful diet and lifestyle choices, such as diabetes and cancer, are the leading causes of death in the United States, according to data published in JAMA. Researchers compared mortality for hundreds of causes and risk factors and found that heart disease, lung cancer, high BMI, and high blood pressure and blood sugar were all among the top risk factors for mortality. Dietary risk factors surpassed tobacco use as the leading cause of death. The authors note differences in risk factors at the state level and recommend targeted approaches to address these issues for disease prevention.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: What can an 80-year-old woman expect to have checked as part of an annual physical examination? -- H.M. ANSWER: The annual physical exam has gotten some bad press lately. Some of it is well-deserved: The actual physical exam occasionally finds some unsuspected problems, but this is quite uncommon and there is no proof that the annual physical saves lives. This argument misses the point, in my opinion. The "annual physical" is a scheduled time for important conversations about screening and prevention. These include checking blood pressure and considering cholesterol screening (cholesterol is a less-important risk factor in 80-year-old women than it is in men or in younger adults). Similarly, it's time to come to a mutual decision on whether a mammogram should be done (again, the evidence at age 80 is unclear).

Most importantly, your doctor or provider should be doing a depression screen, thinking about ways to reduce fall risk, assessing osteoporosis and giving good advice on diet and exercise. Those who consumed more protein did not increase muscle mass or improve physical functionality, well-being, or responsiveness to testosterone, compared with those who consumed lower amounts of protein. These data suggest policymakers reevaluate protein intake recommendations based on outdated research.

RED MEAT INCREASES RISK FOR COLON CANCER A diet high in red meat increases risk for colon cancer in women, according to a study published online in the International Journal of Cancer. Researchers compared cancer incidence rates for dietary patterns centered on red meat, fish, poultry, or no meat in 32,147 women. Those who consumed red meat were more likely to develop distal colon cancer than those who consumed no red meat. The authors note that higher intakes of dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals associated with meat-free diets may protect against cancer. also have miscellaneous pieces such as salt and pepper, candlesticks and cutlery.

'JEWELED' PORCELAIN The "jeweled" Coalport porcelain of the late 19th century attracts buyers with its beauty and unfamiliar beading, but few know the history of the porcelain. Coalport porcelain was first made in England in 1795. In the late 19th century, a new type of porcelain vases, teaware, boxes and other ornamental wares were created. It was hand decorated with small colored "beads" of glaze, as well as sections with simulated gems like moonstones or emeralds. These pieces were very expensive when compared to the useful wares made before that time. In 1895, Coalport was able to make the jeweled porcelains by a less-expensive method, and more pieces were sold. Collectors have favored these pieces since the 1950s, and prices are high today. At a 2016 Skinner auction in Boston, which included over 60 pieces of this type of Coalport, a round covered box, just 2 1/2 inches in diameter, brought $461. The box has turquoise beading and a central medallion. A two-handled shaped bowl with a cover sold for about $1,000 at the same sale. Q: Back in the day, many brides selected a pattern of sterling-silver flatware. Today those sets of silver aren't used and are a problem for the families that inherit them. This is the dilemma I am facing. How do we get rid of the flatware? I have two sets of sterling silver flatware and additional items. How do I find a reliable and safe way to sell the flatware, either for the value of the set or for the value of the silver? I have a set of Meadow Rose by Wallace and a set of Oneida's Damask Rose. I

A: Sterling silver is always worth at least the meltdown value, and there are shops that buy silver and gold to melt down, but you also can sell silver flatware to a matching service. Many are listed online. Search for "matching service silver" or "matching service silver plate." Expect to get about half what it will sell for because dealers have to make a profit. Wallace introduced Meadow Rose pattern in 1907. It sells for more than Oneida's Damask Rose, which was first made in 1946. Monograms lower the price. *** CURRENT PRICES Bottle stopper, kissing couple, carved wood, push lever, heads turn and kiss, Anri, c. 1950, 6 1/2 inches, $20 Golf club, Brassie, brass sole plate, lead back weight, blonde fruitwood head, Epsom golf club, marked, McWatt, 1800s, 42 inches, $100. Stringholder, cylindrical, Planters Cocktail Peanuts, figural Mr. Peanut, chalkware, turquoise and yellow paint, 1950s, $455. Cloisonne Teapot, brass and copper, green enamel, lotus flower petals, loop handle, carved frog finial, lid, 1900s, 5 x 8 inches, $1,500. *** TIP: American carousel figures are more heavily carved on the right side, because they went around counterclockwise. The left side is more ornate for European figures, because the carousel turned the other way. American figures sell for more money. For more collecting news, tips and resources, visit www.
