Welcome Dear TIA Members and Industry Colleagues: Welcome to TIA 2013: The Future of the Network. You are on the front lines of one of the most disruptive and transformative times in the history of the ICT industry, so we have made it the goal of this event to give you real-world information that allows you to adapt to challenges, overcome hurdles and take advantage of quickly emerging opportunities. This year’s TIA conference is designed to create a community that will be more interactive and engaging throughout the entire event. To help the industry navigate a time of unprecedented demand for networked devices, supply chain issues and lightning-fast innovation cycles, we have built an event around six educational tracks addressing mission-critical topics, along with 10 highly focused and intensive workshops. Over the next three days, you will hear from some of our industry’s most influential and engaging leaders. Keynote speakers will include the leadership of Alcatel-Lucent, Amazon, AT&T, Bell Labs, CenturyLink, China Mobile, Frontier, GENBAND, Neustar, T-Mobile, Verizon, The Weather Company and many other companies, along with acting FCC Chairwoman Clyburn and influential members of Congress, NSA Director, and NIST Director and leadership from State Department, DHS, DOC, DOT, DOE, USEPA, and other government agencies. In all, more than 250 ICT leaders will share unique viewpoints, actionable intelligence and practical advice.
But TIA 2013 is not just about listening: we want you to be part of the conversation. Throughout these three days, you will be encouraged to interact, share your experiences and collaborate on solutions to the Network’s greatest challenges. In fact, one of our goals in moving the conference to Washington, D.C., this year is to gather leading executives and technology innovators for a dialogue with the policymakers and regulators who are playing an important role in charting the network’s future. To facilitate this conversation, we are holding a Policy Day on Wednesday – when regulators, members of Congress, government affairs leaders, and telecom executives will come together to discuss a wide range of issues, including cybersecurity, broadband capacity and IP transition spectrum. We look forward to your participation in the industry’s most comprehensive and interactive ICT conference. On behalf of TIA and the TIA Board, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our host sponsor, GENBAND, and to all our sponsors for making this event possible. Here’s to the Future of the Network.

M2M (machine-to-machine) communications — also known as the Internet of Things — is quickly maturing and becoming the most attractive growth opportunity for the global telecommunications industry. With the emergence of enterprise grade end-to-end M2M platforms, we are moving from simply connecting devices to seamlessly integrating ‘things’ to the existing enterprise systems and back office, and everything in between — providing new business intelligence, operational efficiencies and management capabilities across organizations in any market or industry segment. Executives from ILS Technology will expose you to new opportunities in the Internet of Things and illustrate how easily you can get started. The workshop offers a hands-on introduction to the deviceWISE M2M Enabling Platform and shows how you can deploy complete enterprise grade M2M solutions quickly and cost-efficiently. The workshop is designed for executives and technical professionals that seek to partner in the M2M value chain (i.e. device makers, network operators, system integrators, application developers, valueadded resellers, etc.), as well as enduser companies that are looking for an enterprise-grade “do-it-yourself” platform or a turnkey M2M solution.

Network Operators and Technology Vendors Meeting of the Minds
Tuesday, October 8: 7:30 am – 10:25 am
Media and the Network Location: Chesapeake 10
Tuesday, October 8: 7:30 am – 10:25 am From over-the-top video to streaming music to cloud gaming, media providers and consumers increasingly depend on the network to deliver and access content. As that reliance grows, issues of network capacity, reliability and latency are increasingly critical both to the user experience and to content monetization strategies. For operators, streaming media, particularly video, is already the fastest growing category of traffic and the network. And that growth is likely to accelerate over the next five years as consumers and content providers look to the network to support scalable, real-time Web broadcasts, virtual pay-TV services, 4K video, targeted, real-time ad insertion, and other advanced capabilities. To deliver those capabilities, operators need careful planning to match the capital investment required with the real growth in demand. This workshop, presented by GigaOM Research, provices insights into the future evolution of media distribution and consumption, the demands it will place on the network, and its implications for network operators. Hear from leading media companies and content service providers about the outlook for their businesses over the next five years, the performance they’re expecting from the network, and the business models they hope to implement.
The Technology of Streaming Video in the Zettabyte Era With predictions that all forms of video (TV, video on demand, Internet, and P2P) will be 80 to 90 percent of global consumer traffic by 2017, the ICT industry and its markets must become much more conversant with the nuts and bolts of streaming. This mini-workshop, conducted by an expert in the AV industry, offers a great primer on streaming video specification and bandwidth parameters. Communication quality and data size are directly linked. Do you really require ultimate quality or is data size a factor? This course explores the technical factors of data size, image and audio quality, and tips on reducing the load on the network. Understand the basics on multicast and unicast solutions, hosting your streams internally or externally, and streaming formats – all designed to maximize efficiency on the network. 7:30 am – 8:30 am

of view, the underlying changes don’t matter. Whether addressing consumers, enterprise or government customers, challenges span from the acquisition of adequately tested services, to managing upgrades and security, to enabling and ensuring speedy deployment and adoption. The questions of who provides the services, how to ensure end-to-end interoperability and integration, and how to ensure the customer is well served can be daunting on both the customer and the provider side. Customers ultimately determine who their providers will be, based on Quality of Experience. TIA 2013 focuses on ways that strategic Customer Experience Management enhances opportunities for new market access and revenues.

As more content migrates to the Cloud, complexity of services to customers is magnified. Organizations, from government to education to healthcare to businesses both large and small are struggling to block network intrusions while adopting new policies such as BYOD in the workplace. The adoption of Cloud services such as Big Data, as yet in its infancy, places ever-increasing demands on bandwidth and timely, reliable content delivery.
E d u catio n a l P ro g ra m
The role of the data center in managing, hosting and delivering Cloud services is pivotal. Bandwidth (p. 12) capacity, migration of speeds from 10 Gb/s to 40 Gb/s, 100 Gb/s and beyond, and the optical fiber infrastructure are critical for meeting demand for reliability, performance, scalability, cost-effectiveness and time to restoration. Studies assert that the physical layer accounts for 60-80% of network downtime, elevating it to mission critical status.
