Geographical position
With an extension of 48,484 square kilometers our nation is the second largest in the Major Antilles, right behind Cuba. With 32 provinces and a national district which includes the capital city, Santo Domingo, it is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean in the north, the Caribbean Sea in the south, the Mona Channel in the east, which connects to Puerto Rico and the Republic of Haiti in the west.
Origins
On the 5th of December of 1492, during his first journey to the Americas, Christopher Columbus came to this island. In his diary, the Admiral described this land as “the most beautiful land human eyes ever saw”; he called it “Hispaniola” and helped the Spanish crown to conquer the New World. 6

The first European colony was established in this island, with the capital Santo Domingo: it was called
the First City of America, which served as origin for the first cultural and social institutions, the building of the first cathedral, the first hospital, the first university, monuments, churches and fortresses. The Spanish colony’s interests in this island were strong until late 16th century, mostly because of the benefits generated by the richness in mining and the sugar cane plantations.
Climate: tropical and humid, with average temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. Religion: Catholic. Electricity: 110V -60 cycles (110V/60Hz), but most hotels count with 220V adapters. Entry requirements: depending on your citizenship, you may
enter Dominican territory with a USD 10.00 tourist card which you may be able to purchase at the airport, valid for a stay of 15-30 days (a surcharge applies according the length of the stay). For instance, citizens from Europe, United States and Canada may be able to stay for 90 days with a valid passport and the purchase of the tourist card upon arrival at the airport, without the need of visas. This privilege was agreed with countries from the European Union, United States and Canada. Some citizens are required to apply for a visa:

Animal regulations: in order to allow the entrance of a pet to the country, the Department of Animal Sanity requires the animal’s vaccination certificate against rabies thirty days prior to the arrival date, and the pet’s health certificate issued within 15 days prior to arrival. Without these documents, the pet should be submitted to quarantine, from 8 to 30 days depending on the country of origin.

Luperón, located in the stunning bay of the same name has turned into an important yacht destination hosting over 500 embarkations every year. The bay was originally name by Christopher Columbus as “Bahía de Gracias” (Bay of Grace) because it served as a haven that protected the galleons from the tropical storms.

Amber museum
Millions of years of history confined in a stone Just in case you never knew the province of Puerto Plata lies on very important and valuable amber reservoir dated from millions of year. The country’s most famous amber museum is the one located in the city of Puerto Plata, in an old-Victorian-style house very wellknow as Villa Bentz. Due to the high content in vegetal resin containing prehistoric fossil, the Dominican amber is highly appreciated by world’s famous jewelers. This amber is 90% clearer than most of other ambers from other places and it contains 10 times more insects than 14
the one found in the Baltic Sea, thus making the Dominican amber a most-wanted item for tourists visiting our country.
The museum is open to the public Monday thru Saturday, from 9:00AM to 6:00 PM, and a variety of honey-yellow-tone ambers are available as well as others in green, brown and dark blue colors.

Sosúa: always historical and exuberant
The origins of Sosúa, a small village in the province of Puerto Plata, date way back to the decade of 1930’s when the Dominican government, ruled by the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, allowed the settlement of 100,000 Jews. In the month of May of 1940 the first group of Jewish refugees arrived with 26 men, 10 women and 1 child. Dominican Republic gave the Jews a chance to start a new life, free of hostilities, mistreatment, discrimination and persecution. They were even received by Trujillo with 70 head of cattle, which in the end was the kick-off to develop the dairy industry. The community of Sosúa, which by the time was merely an abandoned plantation of bananas in the north coast, would become the haven for thousands of Jews who worked very hard and built the foundations for a prosperous town and today is a very dynamic tourist destination in Dominican Republic. The name “Sosúa” comes from the Chibcha language, meaning “worm”. During the times of the aborigines the name “Sosúa” first was referred to the zigzag shape of the river; but, and just like other villages, once the first settlers came along, the community adapted the name of the river: Sosúa.

Brugal

Brugal is one of the most prestigious brand names in Dominican rum making and where tradition is one valued ingredient. Over one hundred years back up the history and it is one of the most wanted local items. The production of rum Brugal starts on the juice extracted from the sugar cane juice, better known as “guarapo”, which in fact undergoes a process to obtain the molasses; then, next step is to ferment with yeast for a sort of wine mix that finally makes the alcohol when completing the cycle of distillation. The alcohol distilling grade is one important issue when making the rum Brugal and one distinguishing feature to other similar drinks
produced in the country. Whilst other rum makers distill the alcohol between 90 and 92 degrees, Brugal is distilled at 95 degrees, meaning a cleaner and less contaminant product. Later is diluted with purified and filtered water at 65 degrees. The aging process takes place in American white oak barrels imported directly from Kentucky, USA. The time of aging differs according the type of rum: “Extra Viejo” (extra old), “Añejo” (aged), “Blanco” (white), “Carta Blanca” (also white), “Carta Dorada” (golden), “Siglo de Oro” (golden century) and “Licor Único” (unique liquor). Once the time is set for each type, which varies from one to six years, the alcohol is taken from the barrels thru underground pipes directly to a chamber to start the process of filtering, formulation and settling. Finally, the alcohol is degraded from 65 degrees to 37-40 degrees, depending if the final product is for exportation or for local consumption.
A unique flavor
The rum’s unique flavor comes from the caramel and fruit extract for coloring and a family’s secret formula for each variety of the product. Once the combination is performed, the rum rests from 7 to 25 days, always depending on the type of rum, in a stainless steel deposit to eliminate all chemical components and to soften it. After concluding this phase, the rum is ready to bottle and ready for distribution, for all to enjoy.

cafeteria and those looking for some souvenirs will find the option in a gift shop. The cable car of Puerto Plata, the only one in the country, was built in 1974. It climbs up to 1,000 feet above sea level from which you can glimpse the spectacular view of the Atlantic coastline and the city of Puerto Plata.

Charcos de Damajagua “A gift from nature”
There are several tourist companies providing guided tours with attractive prices, safety and first aid equipments and the reliability of people well-trained and with knowledge of the Charcos de Damajagua. From Puerto Plata, it will take you about 30 minutes to reach Damajagua; and some 45 minutes from the city of Santiago.
Amidst exotic and unrepeatable landscapes of many Dominican treasures there is one that outstands for the spectacular and singular beauty: the 27 charcos (“natural pools”) of Damajagua. The capital of windsurf and kiteboarding Those young people, windsurf and kiteboarding lovers, always on the quest of “the perfect wave” come to Dominican Republic, to the only beach where to look for it: Cabarete, a beach with special features and ranked by the experts as one of the best in the world for such adventures and other water sports. Year after year Cabarete dyes itself with the multicolored boards and canvas of thousands of youngsters coming from all over the world to compete in international tournaments. The winds of the Atlantic and the natural layout of the beach have made of Cabarete the top-preferred destination for those water sports cravers who live out in passion with the ocean and thousands of sensations with the nightlife, wonderful gastronomy and a multicolored culture.

If there’s one thing that truly portraits our people, that is baseball. No matter gender, age or social class, “la pelota”, as we call it, is followed by everyone; it has been the source from which many of our daily words and expressions come from. There is no other game or sport more popular than baseball; it is in our culture, in our skin: it is our national pastime. Ever since we are born, Dominicans get into it and live the experience, playing the game even in the most oldfashioned way, and even on improvised field (or “play”, as we commonly call a baseball park), like any street on any neighborhood, or a park, or even in an abandoned real estate lot.

It is no coincidence that many great players in the professional baseball leagues come from Dominican Republic: the only player with 5 gold glove awards in a row, a pitcher with over 1,000 appearance, a player with more than 600 homeruns and 5th on the list of all times, the only pitcher with 3 Cy Young awards and more than 3,000 strikeouts and a player with 10 consecutive seasons hitting 35 homeruns or more. In the past 50 years Dominican Republic has registered 466 players in the Major Leagues, thus making it the country, other than the United States, with more players in “the big league”. A fact: only seven American states have sent more players to the majors than Dominican 31

Some interesting facts about Dominican baseball: • The team “Licey” was founded in 1907; teams “Estrellas Orientales” came second, in 1910; then “Escogido” in 1921; “Aguilas”, which was born under the name of Santiago BBC, was created in 1936; team “Toros del Este” in 1983 and the youngest team is “Gigantes del Nordeste” in 1996.

Republic, but it took them a little over 100 years to do so. Names such as Juan Marichal, Felipe Alou, Sammy Sosa, Pedro Martínez, Albert Pujols, David Ortiz, Manny Ramírez, Vladimir Guerrero and Aramis Ramírez have brought prestige to the game. Marichal is the only Dominican, at the moment, inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame; Sosa is the only player in the history of baseball to compile three seasons with 60 homeruns or more, and fifth in the list of all times, while Martínez has the merit to register a 2.80 ERA (earned run average) in his career. Dominican Republic has won the Caribbean World Series of Baseball in 18 occasions, being the first in 1971 and team Licey has done it 10 times; the, team Aguilas won it in
1997 and it has done it 5 times, whilst team Escogido has done it 3 times, in 1988, 1990 and 2010. The “Águilas Cibaeñas”, one of the teams of great tradition.
Rob Ruck, in his book “The tropic of baseball”, states that San Pedro de Macorís is the town in Dominican Republic that produces, per capita, more baseball players than any other country in the world.
Some history Baseball was first introduced in the country in September of 1886; it came to San Pedro de Macorís. The facts are still not clear enough. Some historian point out the Cuban brothers Ignacio and Ubaldo Alomá, while others mention José Aruza, Cuban too, and José Méndez López, from Puerto Rico, who organized some games for a team
called “Arioles” sponsored by Ingenio Porvenir (the sugar mill company) who donated the field to play the games, in 1899. It was in 1916, during the United States first invasion to Dominican Republic, when baseball got popular and really became a national pride. By the time, games between Dominicans and Americans meant a lot more than just a simple sport. Later, in the 1940’s amateur baseball became popular with the games played honoring the dictator Trujillo. These years witnessed the first baseball facilities in our nation’s capital and in 1946 were built the first real baseball stadium, the one at the “Escuela Normal” of Santo Domingo.
• The first broadcast of a baseball game was on 21st of October of 1917, and it was done by telephone. The way we are... could be the reason for the name tobacco and the famous brand of cigars. Dominican Republic was the first in a commercial exploitation of tobacco, in 1531, and it was Santiago, the central region of the island, where most of the production takes place.

of “cohoba” to “communicate themselves with their deities” and they used a cylindershaped instrument called “tabaca”, which

Added value The high quality and the consistency of the mixture are the two features that make a difference in the Dominican tobacco when compared to those of other producing countries. “In a World where nothing is safe and anything goes, the cigar smoker, at least, is reflexive and mature, he wishes to have a non-surprising product, a product loyal to his taste and his pleasure, and that is what a Dominican tobacco offers”, proudly stated

Dominican Republic, and especially the region of Santiago, produces cigars rich in flavors with the blend of different tobaccos from all over the world, like Ecuador, Brazil, Nicaragua, Honduras, United States, Mexico, Cameroon and Indonesia. The tobacco’s contribution to the economy of Santiago and our country is very significant. Over 15,000 direct jobs in the factories and more than 5,000 in the independent packing process. On the field, it is estimated approximately 60,000 workers.

General Cigar, Tabacalera García, Aurora, Tabadom Holding, Matasa and Tabacos Quisqueyanos, the country’s six leading cigar producers, are settled in Santiago and they are responsible for the “Cigar Festival” which takes place every year and consumers and retailers meet. The purpose of the festival is to encourage people to learn more about the Dominican tobacco, the way they are produced and to interact with our culture. 36

The way we are... The rivers of Jimenoa and Baiguate count with two impressive waterfalls formed by the slopes of the mountains into the valley. Nearby, and at 3,087 meters above sea level, stands Pico Duarte, the highest elevation in all of the Caribbean.
