2017 SEASON IN REVIEW Portland finished the 2017 regular season with a mark of 14-5-5, earning a playoff berth for the fourth time in five seasons. Thorns FC won their second NWSL Championship in five seasons (2013, 2017), while also establishing single-season records for points (47), wins (14), home wins (10) and shutouts (11).

As a team, Portland had the top defense in the NWSL for a second consecutive season, allowing the fewest goals (20) and finished tied for the lowest goalsagainst average (0.83) in league history.

Goalkeeper Adrianna Franch set an NWSL single-season record for shutouts (11) and was named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year and NWSL Best XI. Defenders Meghan Klingenberg and Emily Menges were named to the NWSL Second XI along with midfielder Lindsey Horan.

Portland concluded the campaign with a mark of 11-1-1 in their last 13 games, including the playoffs. Thorns FC wrapped up the campaign on a six-game unbeaten streak (5-0-1) in regular-season play and were unbeaten in their last eight games (7-0-1), including playoff matches.

MATCH PREVIEW Saturday’s match marks the second match of back-to-back road matches as Thorns FC travels to take on the Chicago Red Stars on March 31 at Toyota Park.

Portland opened the 2018 season against the North Carolina Courage, falling 1-0 on March 24. It marked the first time that the club as not earned at least a point in their season-opening match.

Notably, for the second time in club history Thorns FC and the Portland Timbers will play a doubleheader - the first of its kind on the road. In 2017, Thorns FC opened the 2017 campaign at Providence Park on April 15 against the Orlando Pride, while the Timbers squared off against Sporting Kansas City in the second match. The Timbers match against the Chicago Fire kicks off the doubleheader at 3 p.m. (Pacific), while Thorns FC and the Red Stars square off in the second match at 5:15 p.m. (Pacific).

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first five NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaging 17,653 fans in their fifth season in the league in 2017. On Sept. 30, 2017, Thorns FC recorded their fourth sellout in club history.

HEAD COACH MARK PARSONS Head coach Mark Parsons enters his third season with Thorns FC in 2018. Since joining the club for the 2016 season, Parsons has helped Portland to an NWSL Championship (2017) and NWSL Shield (2016), helping Thorns FC become the first NWSL team with three trophies, while compiling a mark of 26-8-10 (.705) and 12 or more wins in each of his first two seasons with the club.

During his tenure, Thorns FC have finished in the top two in the NWSL regularseason standings in both seasons, winning the club’s first NWSL Shield in 2016, and second NWSL Championship, while helping Portland secure a home playoff match in consecutive seasons. Under Parsons, Thorns FC have secured one of the top home-field advantages in the league, registering just two losses at Providence Park since his arrival (18-2-2) and became the first team in league history in 2017 to record 10 home victories in a season with the second-best home record in league history (10-1-1).

In just his second season with the club, Parsons helped Portland lift the NWSL Championship trophy behind one of the most dominant defensive performances in league history. Thorns FC tied the singleseason record for the top defense in NWSL history, posting a 0.83 goals-against average, while also equaling the mark for the most home shutouts (7) in a single season. In addition, Thorns FC finished the 2017 regular-season campaign ranked first in fewest goals conceded (20), fewest goals conceded at home (8) and fewest goals conceded on the road (12).

The 2016 NWSL Coach of the Year in his first season with Thorns FC, Parsons led Portland to the NWSL Shield. With Parsons at the helm, Thorns FC finished the season with a 12-3-5 record as they hosted the club’s first-ever home playoff game. In addition, Portland registered the best home record (8-1-1) and best road record (4-2-4) in the league, while beginning the season with the second-longest unbeaten streak in league history (12 games). Parsons oversaw a defensive unit that became just the third team in league history to allow less than a goal per game over the course of an entire season (19 goals in 20 games, 0.95 goals-against average) and offensively the team ranked second in the league in goals (35) and tied for second in assists (23).

Prior to joining Thorns FC, Parsons served as the head coach and general manager of the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, helping guide the Spirit to consecutive playoff appearances during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Assuming the role of head coach in July 2013 and general manger in September 2013, Parsons helped engineer one of the most successful turnarounds in league history as the Spirit went on to a 10-win season and secured a berth in the league playoffs in 2014 after winning just three games the previous season.

In addition, the Spirit Reserves won the W-League Championship, the U20s were national finalists and five Super Y Academy teams were also national finalists with Parsons at the helm as general manager.

As the head coach of the Spirit Reserves in 2013, Parsons led the team to a third-place finish at the National Championships, while also helping launch the club’s academy programs. In 2012, Parsons helped guide the D.C. United Women U20s to the National Championship match, earning a runner-up finish.

From 2014-10, Parsons worked with Chelsea FC girls and boys academies, while also serving as the head coach for the Chelsea Ladies Reserves from 2008-10 and ss an assistant coach with the U16 Girls Academy.

The Cranleigh, Surrey, native holds UEFA A and B Licenses, a US Youth Soccer National Youth License and US Soccer B License.

BOUNCING BACK Since the start of the 2016 season, Portland has only suffered back-to-back losses twice. Notably, Thorns FC have not lost consecutive matches on the road during the span. Portland has posted a record of 5-0-1 in matches immediately following a road loss.

PASSING ACCURACY Among teams in 2017, Portland ranked third in the NWSL in passing accuracy (75.2). Among midfielders who played in at least 20 regular-season matches in 2017, Lindsey Horan (78.54) and Angela Salem (78.26) ranked first and second in passing accuracy. Defender Emily Sonett ranked third overall in passing accuracy (79.96), while Horan and Salem ranked fourth and fifth. Among defenders, Sonnett, Emily Menges and Meghan Klingenberg ranked among the top ten.

Chicago opened the 2018 season with a 1-1 draw on the road against the Houston Dash on March 25. Defender Taylor Comeau registered a stoppage-time equalizer to help secure a point on the road for the Red Stars. Chicago is without several key players for the match including U.S. WNT standouts Julie Ertz and Casey Short in addition to newly-acquired and reigning NWSL MVP Sam Kerr. Despite the absences, Chicago has a strong defense bolstered by goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, who helped anchor a team that conceded the third-fewest goals (30) in the league in 2017.
