2018 IN REVIEW Portland earned its fifth NWSL postseason berth in six seasons and hosted an NWSL semifinal match for a third consecutive season. For a third straight season, Thorns FC recorded 12 or more wins during the regular season and equaled the club’s best road record, posting a mark of 6-3-3 away from home. As a team, Portland scored a club-best 40 goals. Notably, Thorns FC became the first team in league history to reach three NWSL Championship matches. Individually, Lindsey Horan was named NWSL MVP and also selected to the NWSL Best XI along with Adrianna Franch, Tobin Heath and Emily Sonnett, while Emily Menges and Christine Sinclair were Second XI selections.

MATCH PREVIEW Thorns FC continue their road swing with a match against the Chicago Red Stars. Portland will play its first six games on the road due to completion work on the $85 million transformation of Providence Park, traveling more than 20,000 miles round trip during that span. Saturday’s match is the team’s only road match against Chicago during the regular season. Last season, Portland posted a record of 1-0-1 in two road matches against the Red Stars.

HEAD COACH MARK PARSONS A finalist for 2018 Best FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year, head coach Mark Parsons is currently in his fourth season with Thorns FC. Since joining the club ahead of the 2016 season, Parsons has helped lead Portland to an NWSL Championship (2017) and NWSL Shield (2016) and back-to-back NWSL Championship appearances (2017, 2018), while compiling a mark of 39-14-16 (.681) and 12 or more wins in each of his first three seasons with the club. On May 25, 2018, Parsons became the third coach in league history to register 50 career wins. During his tenure, Thorns FC have finished in the top two in the NWSL regular-season standings in three consecutive seasons, winning the club’s first NWSL Shield in 2016, and the second NWSL Championship in club history in 2017, while helping Portland secure a home playoff match in in 2016, 2017 and 2018. Under Parsons, Thorns FC have secured one of the top home-field advantages in the league, registering just five losses at Providence Park since his arrival (24-5-5) while also becoming the first team in league history in 2017 to record 10 home victories. In just his second season with the club, Parsons helped Portland lift the NWSL Championship trophy behind one of the most dominant defensive performances in league history. Thorns FC tied the singleseason record for the top defense in NWSL history, posting a 0.83 goals-against average, while also equaling the mark for the most home shutouts (7) in a single season. In addition, Thorns FC finished the 2017 regular-season campaign ranked first in fewest goals conceded (20), fewest goals conceded at home (8) and fewest goals conceded on the road (12). The 2016 NWSL Coach of the Year in his first season with Thorns FC, Parsons led Portland to the NWSL Shield. With Parsons at the helm, Thorns FC finished the season with a 12-3-5 record as they hosted the club’s first-ever home playoff game. In addition, Portland registered the best home record (8-1-1) and best road record (4-2-4) in the league, while beginning the season with the second-longest unbeaten streak in league history (12 games). Parsons oversaw a defensive unit that became just the third team in league history to allow less than a goal per game over the course of an entire season (19 goals in 20 games, 0.95 goals-against average) and offensively the team ranked second in the league in goals (35) and tied for second in assists (23). Prior to joining Thorns FC, Parsons served as the head coach and general manager of the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, helping guide the Spirit to consecutive playoff appearances during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Assuming the role of head coach in July 2013 and general manger in September 2013, Parsons helped engineer one of the most successful turnarounds in league history as the Spirit went on to a 10-win season and secured a berth in the league playoffs in 2014 after winning just three games the previous season. In addition, the Spirit Reserves won the W-League Championship, the U20s were national finalists and five Super Y Academy teams were also national finalists with Parsons at the helm as general manager. As the head coach of the Spirit Reserves in 2013, Parsons led the team to a third-place finish at the National Championships, while also helping launch the club’s academy programs. In 2012, Parsons helped guide the D.C. United Women U20s to the National Championship match, earning a runner-up finish. From 2014-10, Parsons worked with Chelsea FC girls and boys academies, while also serving as the head coach for the Chelsea Ladies Reserves from 2008-10 and as an assistant coach with the U16 Girls Academy. The Cranleigh, Surrey, native holds UEFA A and B Licenses, a US Youth Soccer National Youth License and US Soccer B License. Mark, his wife, Hannah, and their daugther Edie (5) reside in Portland.
APRIL SUCCESS Thorns FC have found early season success during the month of April, posting a record of 11-1-6 since 2013. Under head coach Mark Parsons, Portland is 5-1-3 in April. Christine Sinclair has solid umbers early in the season, tallying six goals and three assists in 15 career games during the month of April.
NEW FACES Two new players have signed with Thorns FC ahead of the 2019 season: Bella Bixby and Gabby Seiler. Bixby (Oregon State) and Seiler (Florida) were selected by Portland in the 2018 NWSL College Draft.

Chicago opened the 2019 NWSL season with a 1-1 draw on the road against the North Carolina Courage. The reigning Golden Boot winner, Sam Kerr, tallied the lone goal of the match for the Red Stars, extending her streak to five consecutive regular-season matches with a goal. The Red Stars earned a berth in the 2018 NWSL playoffs, posting a record of 9-5-10. In 2018, Chicago posted a strong home record with a mark of 5-3-4. As a team, the Red Stars scored 38 goals, which ranked as the third most in the NWSL, with 16 of those goals coming from Kerr. Yuki Nagasato is a key part of the Red Stars offense as the Japanese international finished ranked among the top five in the NWSL with seven assists in 2018.

SCORING TRIO The trio of Tobin Heath, Lindsey Horan and Christine Sinclair combined for 29 goals during the 2018 season. Horan finished the season ranked third in the NWSL goals (13), while Sinclair tallied nine goals, which ranked tied for fifth. Sinclair was one of just two players in the NWSL in 2018 with at least eight goals and six assists.
SHOTS ON TARGET During the 2018 regular season, Portland led the NWSL in shot conversion rate (16.67%) and ranked second in shooting accuracy (49.17%).
LAST MATCH RECAP Portland opened the 2019 season with a 2-0 win on the road against the Orlando Pride on April 14 at Orlando City Stadium. Caitlin Foord and Tobin Heath each tallied a goal and an assist in the game to help Thorns FC earn a win on the road.
