LAST MATCH RECAP Playing the second of back-to-back road matches, Thorns FC improved to 2-04 on the road this season with a 2-0 win against the Western New York Flash on June 17 at Rhinos Stadium. Portland scored a pair of second-half goals in the win as forward Christine Sinclair scored for a second straight match. Finding space in the middle of the field, midfielder Allie Long split the defense with a pass to Sinclair just outside the box and she finished from distance into bottom left corner in the 48th minute. Thorns FC doubled their lead in the 73rd minute through forward Nadia Nadim. Midfielder Tobin Heath was fouled in the goal box by defender Elizabeth Eddy, giving Portland its first penalty-kick attempt of the season. Nadim converted, scoring her second goal of the season to give Portland the lead. Goalkeeper Adrianna Franch registered a seasonhigh seven saves as Thorns FC kept their fourth clean sheet of the campaign.

MATCH DAY PREVIEW Following back-to-back road games, Portland Thorns FC face a quick turnaround, playing their second match in the last six days on Wednesday, June 22, squaring off the Chicago Red Stars. Wednesday’s match is just the fourth home match this season for Thorns FC. Portland is tied for the fewest home games played (4) through the first nine weeks of the season, but have earned more points through road matches than any other NWSL club (10). Portland and Chicago head into the match as two of the top scoring teams in the league with 12 and 11 goals, respectively, and two of the top defenses with Thorns FC conceding just five goals and the Red Stars allowing six goals.

NO PLACE LIKE HOME Playing their home matches at downtown Portland’s iconic Providence Park, Thorns FC have led the league in attendance in each of their first three NWSL seasons. Globally, Thorns FC have the highest attendance of any women’s professional team in the world, averaging 15,639 fans in their third season in the league in 2015. Portland has produced record crowds in each season, including Thorns FC’s first sellout of 21,144 fans against Seattle Reign FC on July 22, 2015. Portland equaled that mark for a second time on Aug. 30 against the Washington Spirit. In its first three seasons, Thorns FC have averaged better than 14,038 fans per game.

HEAD COACH MARK PARSONS Mark Parsons was named Portland Thorns FC head coach on Oct. 5, 2015, coming to Portland following two full seasons as the head coach for the NWSL’s Washington Spirit. The former head coach and general manager of the Washington Spirit of the NWSL, Parsons, 29, helped guide the Spirit to consecutive league playoff appearances during the 2014 and 2015 seasons, posting a record of 18-15-11 in his two full seasons as head coach for the club. Assuming the role of head coach in July 2013 and general manger in September 2013, Parsons helped engineer one of the most successful turnarounds in league history as the Spirit went on to a 10-win season and secured a berth in the league playoffs in 2014 after winning just three games the previous season. Under Parsons’ guidance in 2015, the Spirit ranked among the top three teams in the league in goals scored (31), while forward Crystal Dunn was named league MVP. In addition, the Spirit Reserves won the W-League Championship, the U20s were national finalists and five Super Y Academy teams were also national finalists with Parsons at the helm as general manager. As the head coach of the Spirit Reserves in 2013, Parsons led the team to a third-place finish at the National Championships, while also helping launch the club’s academy programs. In 2012, Parsons helped guide the D.C. United Women U20s to the National Championship match, earning a runner-up finish. Before his arrival in the United States, Parsons was with Chelsea FC from 2004-10, working with both the girls and boys academies during his tenure, while also serving as the head coach for the Chelsea Ladies Reserves from 2008-10. During the 2008-09 campaign, the Reserves won the League Cup, the County Cup and the League Title for the first time in history. As an assistant coach with the U16 Girls Academy, Parsons helped lead the team to an academy championship in 2007. The Cranleigh, Surrey, native holds UEFA A and B Licenses, a US Youth Soccer National Youth License and US Soccer B License. Parsons resides in Beaverton with his wife Hannah and his daughter Edie (2).

AGAINST THE TOP OF THE TABLE It marks the fourth time in the last five weeks that Portland has squared off against the team that sits in first place in the league standings. In those four matches, Thorns FC have claimed seven of the nine available points in those three previous meetings - Washington (5/21), Chicago (6/12) and Western New York (6/17).

HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGE Since 2013, Portland has posted a record of 19-10-7 (.625) at Providence Park. Thorns FC are unbeaten in their last six home matches, posting a record of 5-0-1. This season, Portland is 2-0-1 at Providence Park, outscoring opponents 6-2 in those three matches, including a 0-0 draw in their last home match against Seattle Reign FC on May 29.

ROAD WARRIORS Facing one of the toughest schedules in the league through the first half of the season, Portland has played six of its first nine games on the road and will have played seven of its 10 scheduled road games before July 1 - the most of any team in the league. Including Sunday’s trip to Orlando, Thorns FC will have traveled approximately 11,246 miles in their first 11 matches this season.

LONGEST INDIVIDUAL STREAKS

Chicago heads into Wednesday’s match sitting in first place in the league standings with a record of 5-1-3 after registering a 3-0 win at home against the Boston Breakers on June 18. The Red Stars are unbeaten in their last eight matches and Wednesday’s match will be the first of four straight on the road after playing three consecutive at home. Chicago boasts the top goal scorer in the league in forward Christen Press, who has tallied four goals for the Red Stars. Forward Sofia Huerta is an attacking option for Chicago as well as she tallied a brace against Boston in the last match. Defensively, goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher directs a defense that has posted a league-best five shutouts. Naeher has surrendered just five goals this season. With her next assist, midfielder Tobin Heath will become the third player in club history in register double-digit assists for her career. In addition, Heath will equal the single-season record for assists with six, which was set by midfielder Vero Boquete during the 2014 season. With her next appearance, defender Emily Menges will become just the fourth player in team history to appear in 50 games for the club. Forward Christine Sinclair’s next goal would be her 20th for team. She would be the second player in club history to reach the 20-goal mark, joining midfielder Allie Long (22 goals).

NWSL UNBEATEN STREAKS Portland enters Sunday’s match with a nine-game unbeaten streak - the longest in club history. Thorns FC’s streak is one of seven streaks in league history that have reached eight or more games during the regular season. Three of the longest unbeaten stretches in NWSL history belong to Seattle Reign FC. The longest streak was 16 unbeaten which spanned from April 13, 2014-July 16, 2014. Other teams with multiple unbeaten streaks of more than eight games, include Western New York and Kansas City. Kansas City had the second longest unbeaten stretch (10 games) during the 2013 season.

YOUNG TALENT The combined average age of Thorns FC’s roster is 25.1 years old and features 12 players 25 or younger. Portland boasts a young, talented roster with several key players under the age of 25. The youngest player on the roster is Hayley Raso (21) and she has been playing professional soccer since the age of 18. Additionally, four of those players under the age of 25 - Dagny Brynjarsdottir (24), Emily Sonnett (22), Horan (22) and Raso - have all been capped by their respective national teams.

LEAGUE LEADERS Midfielder Lindsey Horan ranks among the NWSL leaders with three goals this season, while midfielder Tobin Heath has tallied a league-best five assists in just seven games played. As a team, Thorns FC have conceded the fewest goals in the NWSL this season (5), while scoring the second most goals (12).

STRONG DEFENSE Portland boasts the top defense in the league this season and is the only team that has not conceded multiple goals in a match. Thorns FC have registered four clean sheets this season, including two in their last three matches.
