A Tour Through Latin America

Planning the perfect vacation is not just about checking off the landmarks of the destinations, but about immersing yourself in the soul of a place. From the vibrant city streets to ancient ruins hidden in the rainforest, Latin America offers travelers a chance to go beyond the surface and experience culture in its most vivid form.

With a history shaped by resilient and inspiring people, the region tells powerful stories through art, traditions, and architecture. Whether you’re strolling through the colonial town or exploring sacred ruins, every corner of Latin America invites you to learn, connect, and be transformed. Let’s take a closer look at some of the wonders of the region that promise to enrich your next adventure.

Parque Nacional Cahuita Costa Rica

Cahuita National Park offers a unique blend of Afro-Caribbean culture and biodiverse beauty on Costa Rica’s coast. Established in the 1970s, this national park was created to protect the coral reef, becoming one of the first national parks in the country for the conservation of nature. This land is also home to the Bribri people, one of Costa Rica’s indigenous communities, who preserve their culture. Visitors can snorkel over coral reefs, hike coastal trails, and take in the wildlife, all just a short walk from the town of Cahuita.

Iguazu Falls Argentina

Straddling the border of Argentina and Brazil, with Argentina offering a more immersive experience, sits Iguazu Falls, one of the world’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders. Discovered first by European explorers in the 16th century, the falls are considered a World Heritage site because of their powerful cultural presence. In 1934, Iguazu National Park was created to help conserve the environment around the falls, and in 2011, it was officially chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of the World. When visiting, tourists can walk along the extensive trails and elevated walkways or take a boat ride to the base of the falls, expecting to get splashed by the flowing water!

Tikal National Park Guatemala

The Tikal consists of ancient Mayan ruins deep in the rainforest of Guatemala. This ancient site is said to be a very significant archaeological site of the Mayan civilization. Tikal was a flourishing center culturally and politically. The land spanned about 576 square kilometers and is estimated to have had 100,000 inhabitants. While visiting this area today, you can expect an immersive experience combining the awe-inspiring ancient architecture of the pyramids and the surrounding rainforest’s beautiful biodiversity. Guided tours are recommended to understand the historical significance and fully navigate the area.

Machu Picchu Peru

This 15th-century Inca citadel is noted to be a “religious site for Inca leaders, whose civilization was virtually wiped out by Spanish invaders in the 16th century” (History.com). Many historians believe Machu Picchu was built during the height of the Inca empire, but was abandoned for 100 years after it was built. Before American archaeologists stumbled upon the area, it was relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Due to its obscure history, many theories surround the land and its past, making it an interesting place to visit. Adventurous visitors can reach the site via the Inca Trail, while others can take a two-to-three-hour train ride.

Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art Chile

Dedicated to studying and displaying pre-Columbian artwork and artifacts from Central and South America, this art museum offers a journey through the ancient cultures of Latin America. With artifacts spanning over 10,000 years, from Andean textiles to Mayan ceramics, these exhibits provide a thoughtful look at indigenous civilizations long before European contact. Easily accessible on foot by metro in Santiago’s city center, it is a must-see if you enjoy history and have a curious mind.

Arpoador Brazil

With breathtaking views in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro, this small beach is a great relaxing getaway during vacation. Historically, this beach offered some of the best sunset views in Rio and served as a gathering spot for surfers and musicians. Its serene nature allowed for a blend of urban energy and coastal relaxation. Visitors can easily reach this beach on foot or by public transportation, and they have opportunities to watch surfers catch waves as the sun dips behind distant mountains.

Superfoods of the South Quinoa

Nutrient-Rich Local Staples of Central and South America

The culinary traditions of Central and South America celebrate bold and vibrant ingredients with deep cultural roots. From the highlands of Peru to the rainforests of Brazil, the region’s cuisine reflects a rich tapestry of indigenous knowledge and agricultural abundance. The ingredients that make up these dishes are naturally nutrient-dense, offering a mix of flavor and wellness. As the world looks towards more nourishing diets, the age-old staples of Latin America are taking center stage, proving that good food can also be incredibly good for you.

The ancient civilizations of the Mayans, Incas, and Aztecs built prominent communities throughout Central and South America, and their culinary and cultural traditions became the region’s foundation. Despite the challenges of large-scale agricultural production due to environmental conditions, these pre-Colombian communities cultivated potatoes, quinoa, avocados, and much more. They were able to develop skills that significantly sustained their food culture.

As time passed, these food items and agricultural techniques were passed down through generations, making them an essential part of their cuisine today. Explore some of the local staples of Central and South America today and learn about their health benefits. You might discover an ingredient to add to your next meal.

This Andean plant originated around Peru and Bolivia and was cultivated and used by pre-Colombian civilizations for thousands of years. The tiny grain is a complete protein, containing essential amino acids, and is also rich in fiber and iron. Its nutty flavor and fluffy texture make it perfect for salads, grain bowls, and hearty stews, offering both nourishment and versatility.

Açaí Berries

In recent years, Acai berries have become popular as people consume the fruit in colorful fruit bowls and smoothies. However, this fruit has an extensive history. Amazonian Indigenous tribes in Brazil have consumed Acai for centuries for culinary and medicinal purposes. Often noted as a superfood, this fruit is rich in antioxidants, omega fatty acids, and dietary fiber, perfect for boosting energy and supporting heart health.

Avocados

Cação

While often confused with regular chocolate, Cacao is the pure form of the cacao bean, which is used to make chocolate. This bean grows from the cacao tree, which is native to the Amazon forest. Beyond just a sweet treat, cacao is rich in flavonoids, magnesium, and compounds that elevate mood and support cardiovascular health.

Avocados thrive in the climates of Peru, Mexico, and Colombia, where they have been cultivated for centuries. Known for their creamy texture and very subtle flavor, they are packed with hearthealthy fats, potassium, and vitamins C, E, and K. Considered a fruit, not a vegetable, avocados can be used to make a spread for toast, garnish salads, and smoothies, adding a nutritious topping to anything.

Yuca (Cassava)

Yuca, or cassava, is a foundational crop across Central and South America, from the Caribbean coast to the Amazon. It is rich in carbohydrates that serve as an energy source, offers anti-inflammatory effects, and has been shown to improve digestive health. This starchy root can be fried, boiled, mashed, and even used to make flatbreads like cassava tortillas.

Philanthropy in Action How Small Create Change

When many think of philanthropy, they often associate it with grand donations and wealthy benefactors. However, at its core, philanthropy is all about showing your love for humanity, in big and small ways every day. Whether it is lending a helping hand, sharing a meal, or organizing community activities, these simple acts can have the power to transform communities from the ground up, fostering deeper connections. True change often begins with small steps taken by everyday people who care. As you begin to discover ways to give back to your community, micro philanthropy is found to be the most impactful. Micro philanthropy or micro donation is a small charitable donation with a past of being used by companies when collecting spare change. You can see this example through crowdfunding and personal finance apps like Acorns, where a small donation can go a long way. Nevertheless, giving back doesn’t have to involve financial compensation; it can also arise from using our skills to help others. Philanthropy focuses on assisting people over a long period, and that can begin with a small gesture. Let’s discover some small acts that lead to long-term impactful change.

Sharing Skills and Time

We all have various talents and skills that can be used to uplift and empower a community. From tutoring people in multiple subjects to help strengthen their knowledge to activating your green thumb by replanting and planting flowers and trees for a community, these skills can lead to an impactful change. When communities share knowledge, they become more self-sufficient and resilient, creating a cycle of support that strengthens everyone over time.

Supporting Small Business

Small businesses are often the backbone of communities, providing safe spaces and resources for residents. Shopping at local stores, dining at neighborhood restaurants, or promoting small vendors helps keep money within the community. In the long term, this fosters economic growth, job creation, and a sense of pride in local entrepreneurship. The next time you come across a small business, be sure to give them your business.

Support Mutual Aid Groups

Mutual aid groups are organizations that help people in a community work together to share resources. This work aims to meet everyone‘s basic needs, especially when facing tough social or economic challenges. Engaging in food drives or resource sharing meets immediate needs while promoting long-term cooperation. These networks remind people that help often comes from one another, reinforcing the power of community.

Make Care Packages

Putting together kits filled with vital supplies for shelters, seniors, or struggling families exemplifies compassion in action. Regularly creating these kits fosters a dependable source of comfort and care, signaling to others that they are valued and promoting generosity. Always contact facilities beforehand to confirm they accept donations and clarify their specific needs.

Cosmic Balance

Align Your Sign, Align Your Life

Have you ever wondered why certain self-care routines just click for you while others feel off? It might have something to do with the stars. Zodiac signs are based on your birth date and are often linked to different personality traits. While it is all in good fun, they can offer playful insight into what wellness vibes might suit you best.

Before we had various horoscope blogs, humans studied astrology, finding parallels between the positions of celestial bodies and the influence of human actions on the natural world. While many scientists believe there is no definite connection, there is still a vast written history of ancient civilizations studying the patterns of stars and planets, including China, the Sumerians, the Greeks, the Babylonians, and the Egyptians.

School has resumed, leaving the long, relaxing summer days behind. But that doesn’t mean you have to postpone travel plans until next year. Now is the perfect time to plan your next getaway to secure the best travel deals before prices rise.

The term zodiac refers to the belt region of the sky “extending nine degrees on either side of the ecliptic, the sun’s apparent annual path, which contains 12 constellations,” according to Britannica.com. The 12 constellations on either side of the ecliptic make up the astrological signs we are familiar with. Each sign is grouped into nature elements, describing the relations between the characteristics and behaviors associated with each sign.

According to Skyscanner, around 51% of Americans indicate that flight prices will influence their destination choices in 2025, while 50% consider hotel expenses a significant factor. Whether you envision tropical beaches, stunning European scenery, or road trips across the country, traveling doesn’t need to be expensive. Several savvy tips and tricks can turn your vacations into memorable adventures without breaking the bank. Here are a few to keep in mind:

Despite the skepticism of many scientists regarding the scientific validity of astrology and the zodiac, a report from Statista.com in April 2022 revealed that over a quarter of U.S. adults believe in astrology, particularly the idea that “the position of the stars and planets can influence people’s lives.” While this topic remains controversial, astrology continues to offer an entertaining glimpse into one’s life and provides a distinctive viewpoint based on an individual’s birth date.

Let’s explore some fun, feel-good suggestions inspired by your zodiac and nature element, because your self-care should be as unique as you are!

Fire Signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)

Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius are characterized by their passion, boldness, energy, and courage, making them adventurous creators. These signs flourish when engaged in activities, so consider a high-intensity workout or dance class to satisfy their craving for action. To complement their adventurous nature, spicy foods can provide an exciting twist to their meals, while also aiding in calorie burning. For a balance of ease and reflection, journaling can effectively transform that passion into purposeful action.

Earth Signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)

Just like the earth, these signs are grounded and dependable, finding peace in the predictable and joy in the practical. They could benefit from slow, intentional wellness practices like nature walks or gardening, taking in all the beauty of the earth. Regarding food, each person could appreciate nourishing and sensory-rich meals highlighting their love for satisfaction and comfort.

Air Signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)

Air signs are known for being thinkers, curious, talkers, and idea-makers, leading them to be mentally driven. A group workout class may be a great fit to keep them active while providing the social stimulation they need. For their curious minds, a stimulating podcast focusing on wellness and self-improvement may help them feel engaged and inspired. When winding down after a long day, breathing exercises and breathing work can help keep them grounded, calm their thoughts, and bring mental clarity.

Water Signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)

Water signs are often considered to be the most emotionally charged signs. Still, they can actually be deeply introspective, possess strong intuition, and easily pick up on the emotions of others. Processing the world through feelings, these signs need calming and restorative practices like meditation to help regulate their emotions. They are usually naturally creative, with outlets like painting or listening to their favorite songs allowing them to transform their feelings into beauty and healing. Quiet solo time can also be a great pick-me-up, helping them

What Net Zero Really Means Beyond the Buzzword

As the harmful impacts of climate change become more evident, scientists are exploring various solutions to the rise in the Earth’s temperature. What may seem like technical language is, in fact, a straightforward and impactful concept. Net zero refers to the balance between greenhouse gas emissions produced and those taken out of the atmosphere.

This term has become a go-to phrase in climate conversations over the last decade because it represents a significant goal in the fight against global warming: trying to prevent more harm to the planet than we can repair. Many greenhouse gases are essential to the Earth, including carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, all of which help keep the Earth warm and habitable for us. The problem is that too many greenhouse gases are being emitted, thus trapping too much of the sun’s heat, leading to a dramatic change in our climate, including hotter temperatures, more severe storms, increased droughts, and much more.

While the climate conversation can make the future seem bleak, the reality is that we can slow the rate of global warming to ensure our planet’s well-being. Net zero gained popularity at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP21) in 2015. It was a concept agreed on in the Paris Agreement, a promise by the leading world nations to strengthen the global response to climate change.

While the agreement does not include the term ‘net zero,’ many countries have acknowledged the necessity of striving for such a goal. Countries like Norway, Uruguay, Finland, Iceland, and Bhutan have already determined how to achieve net zero or pledged to do so by 2050, while China, Brazil, Singapore, and many others have committed to reaching net zero after 2050.

While large corporations and governments must take action to reduce emissions, it’s important to recognize that we also have a significant role to play in our daily lives. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency highlights that one major contributor to climate change is greenhouse gas emissions resulting from human activities. Emissions from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heating, and transportation are among the primary ways we contribute to a layer that traps the sun’s warmth, driving global warming and climate change. In addition to government policies, there are numerous actions we can take every day to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately achieving the balance required to reach net zero.

Take Small Steps

Everything begins with small steps. Start exploring various transportation options within your campus community, such as carpooling, walking, biking, or using public transit to lower the number of vehicles on the road that emit fossil fuels. Additionally, it reduces energy use by turning off unnecessary lights and unplugging fully charged devices.

Share and Create

Utilize your social media to educate people about net-zero emissions and ways they, too, can combat climate change. Also, look for environmental groups on campus to join to learn more. If there isn’t a club to join, create your own and begin building a community of climate change makers.

Engage Civically

Climate change is a hot topic in every election, even if it is not explicitly reported in the mainstream media. Pay close attention to policies and local initiatives to learn what leaders are doing to combat global warming.

The small steps we take today can significantly impact the future. Remember, we can’t heal the Earth alone. It will take hard work from all of us to aid in the race to net zero. Continue to stay curious and informed, and never stop being eager to learn.

Clearing the Air About Sickle Cell Disease Let s Talk Truth

Regarding Sickle Cell Disease (SCD), misinformation can be just as harmful as the illness itself. Despite affecting millions of people around the world, SCD is still misunderstood by many, with myths, stereotypes, and outdated assumptions flowing through communities. These misconceptions spread confusion, leading to barriers to compassion, quality care, and early diagnosis.

Sickle Cell Disease (also known as sickle cell anemia) is a group of blood disorders that causes red blood cells to become misshapen and break down. Because red blood cells are central to our body function, they carry oxygen from the lungs and deliver it throughout the body. There is a lot of information about sickle cell, but oftentimes, more misinformation is spread. This Sickle Cell Awareness Month, we want to separate fact from fiction, breaking down the most common myths about sickle cell; shining a light on the truth.

Misconception 1 SCD only impacts African American Communities

Sickle cell disease impacts individuals from various racial backgrounds. A 2023 study by the National Institute of Health revealed that among 74,814 hospitalizations for sickle cell disease, 4.8% were Hispanic, 1.8% Caucasian, and a significant 93.4% were African American. While these figures are concerning, they illustrate that this condition can affect anyone. Misinformation about the disease can prevent other communities from seeking testing and obtaining early diagnoses, which are crucial for saving lives.

Misconception 2 SCD is a Contagious Blood Disease

Sickle cell disease is non-contagious. This inherited blood disorder is genetic in nature. For a child to inherit the disease, both parents must possess a specific gene trait and pass it on. Unlike many infections, sickle cell cannot spread through contact or blood transfusions.

Misconception 3 Having the Trait means you have a mild form of SCD

Having the sickle cell trait does not indicate that you have a mild form of the disease. Instead, it signifies that you carry a single gene for sickle cell disease and can pass it on to your future children. It can still be anxiety-inducing to know that you have the trait, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states, “People with SCT (Sickle Cell Trait) usually do not have any symptoms of SCD and live a normal life.”

Misconception 4 SCD is a Painless Disorder

Although you might encounter someone with SCD who appears to live a normal life, it’s important to recognize that this condition is linked to significant pain and complications throughout the body. The most frequent symptom is pain, which occurs when sickle-shaped cells block blood vessels. This pain can strike suddenly and can last for varying durations. Due to its unpredictable nature, many individuals are prescribed potent medications to help reduce the pain. Just because someone seems strong doesn’t indicate they aren’t experiencing pain.

Misconception 5 SCD Gives People Immunity to Certain Diseases

There is a distinct genetic link between sickle cell disease and malaria that has been misinterpreted. In short, SCD does not give people immunity to certain diseases; many patients remain vulnerable to infections due to their weakened immune systems. This myth originates from the discovery that individuals with the sickle cell trait are more resistant to severe and complicated malaria. However, those with sickle cell disease do not share this resistance.

Misconception 6 There is No Cure For SCD

Medical technology and study never cease to amaze the world, as there is now a cure for the disease. Those with sickle cell disease can receive a stem cell or bone marrow transplant, which can introduce healthy cells into the body to help combat the number of sickle cells. This procedure, performed only in extreme cases, is not done often due to the significant risks involved. Nevertheless, SCD patients are also advised to receive blood transfusions to treat complications. The severity of the complications determines the frequency of these transfusions. Along with the pain medication mentioned above, these are the most common methods used to assist patients with SCD.

Having accurate knowledge about sickle cell disease allows people to receive better care not only from medical professionals but also from their communities. It is easy to get caught up in the abundance of misinformation that spreads across the internet, but before accepting each post as truth, be sure to conduct your own research. By doing so, you are not only saving lives but also demonstrating the compassion that a community of people deserves.
