WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection?

Durer’s rules for perspectival projection outline how we measure and represent distance in perspectival projection as we cannot accurately show correct dimensions of the given object.

The depth of an object must be shortened so that it looks accurate in perspectival drawings and Durer also outlines that a view point or horizon line (which represents the viewers eye line) and vanishing point (which touches the horizon) line must also be used.

Durer’s notes that perspectival projection is a perspectival view of a space which is not an isolation of objects represented in foreshortening, rather the entire picture transformed as if you were looking into a window.

Describe homogeneous space?

Homogeneous space is that which is produced by construction using a set of given rules or instructions.

The space is not necessarily true nor accurate as it is reconstructed using the assumptions that we see with a single and immobile eye, and that the planar cross section of the visual pyramid can pass for an adequate reproduction of our optical image.

Hence homogeneous space is never given space, but space produced by construction; and indeed the geometrical concept of homogeneity can be expressed by the postulate that from every point in space it must be possible to draw similar figures in all directions and magnitudes.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS This drawing depicts the mapping of the contents within the 2 spaces chosen for my perspective images.

The notations used in the drawing have been oragnised and shaded to help with their readability, depicting the narrative illustrated in my perspectives.

OLD QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 This view was chosen for the first perspective as it focuses the viewers attention down to the back corner of the quad. This will be the main focal point of the final image as it is where the majority of the scene will be taking place.

This view was chosen for the second perspective as it is more of an open view which is a lot simpler and organised. This helps to emphasizes the change from chaos and darkness to simplicity and lightness.

FINAL PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 This scene represents the dilapidated and ruined city of which Clarice used to be. I have chosen heavy shadowing and dark characters to convey the feeling of darkness and the uncleanliness of the city. Fallen and broken objects such as columns and funerary urns can be seen scattered around the city creating a sense of chaos.

Textures such as mould on the ceiling and dilapidated stone work add to the notion of the city falling apart.

People were used in the scene to represent the confusion and panic as they rush around the old city.

This scene represents the new city of Clarice which is not like the old, however it has had elements re-purposed from the old city.

The scene is a lot lighter as well as being less cluttered and more symmetrical.

The same objects such as the urns and column capitals can be seen in this scene however they have been re-purposed to fit the new city. They are on display as a reminder of what the old Clarice once was.

The people in the scene are also scarce and lighter conveying a sense of calm compared to the previous scene.

WEEK 4 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE

What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice?

Autographic practice is based on art forms such as paintings and sculpture which depend on direct contact with the author for their authenticity and thus cannot be reproduced. For example, architectural sketches, perspective drawings or mappings.

Allographic on the other hand can be compared to art in the form of music, poetry or theatre are works which exist in many copies and can be produced without the direct intervention of the author.

Allographic arts can be replicated and reproduced, existing in many copies by interpreting the set of instructions and conventions in which it has been notated. For example, architectural plans, sections or elevations.

Why do architects need new representational techniques?

Due to the ever advancing and changing technological age we live in, architects need new representational techniques to meet the developing user needs and expectations. It can be seen that technology and society as a whole is constantly evolving and as such it brings complexity and development. As a result we need to be able to design more complex and advanced spaces in turn requiring a newer form of representation.

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

To use images sourced from the internet in my final perspective images the following process was undertaken: Figure 1 - Andrea 1. Open the image file in Photoshop, remove the background, adjust the levels and make grey scale.

2. Open the Photoshop file in Illustrator to turn the image into a vector art. This was done using the image trace tool in silhouette mode. The image was then exported as a .dwg file type.

3. The .dwg file was then imported into rhino to be paced in the 3d model as a planar surface.

The silhouette of the image was placed in rhino to cast shadows when rendering the scene. The grey scale Photoshop images were then placed back over the silhouette in the final editing process.
