A LIBRARY OF ARTEFACTS. THOMAS MARTINIELLO 834 955 - Design Studio Delta, 2019 Allan Burrows Studio 4 THE VISION FOR THE CONTEMPORARY LIBRARY is a library of artefacts in which a catalogue of artefacts is stored. The traditional sense of the library has not been rejected; however as per mapping the city, I was interested in artefacts left behind by humans and their temporal nature. As such, the contemporary library primarily serves as A CATALOGUE OF ARCHITECTURAL TYPOLOGIES of the library (past), representing the historical typologies in the new built form. It also serves to catalogue: - human interaction + experience (through public vs individual scale) - human knowledge (books) In cataloguing the artefacts of what a library once was the following definitions have been made: AN ARTEFACT is defined as being an object made by a human being typically one of cultural or historical interest. In terms of cataloguing the architectural typology of the library, an artefact is an element which is associated or recognised with a particular space/ threshold. Subsequently an artefact does have a scale which is important to understand and appreciate it. However, the contemporary library manipulates the hierarchy and spatial definition associated with the artefacts to emphasis and re-define how we perceive said artefacts, highlighting their past significance. Catalogued architectural typologies from the library of the past include: 1. COLUMN 2. ARCH 3. DOME 4. SIGNAGE 5. PODIUM + STEPS 6. CORNICE + DENTILS 7. PEDIMENT + FRIEZE 8. STAINED GLASS 9. ORNAMENTAL LIGHTING (CHANDELIERS) 10. SKYLIGHTS/ LIGHT WELLS

Through the re-appropriation of these artefacts into the contemporary library, one is made to analyse the artefact, realising that it appears out of context in its historical sense. Only then does the artefact become noticeable, prompting a realisation of the value of the artefact and an understanding of its purpose.
