FROM THE CEO What a Week Ahead!

I

’m not talking about the snow forecast, I’m talking about the crème de la crème week for fun stuff.

There’s the Wombats Rambler, the Alpine Masters Championships, the Australian Open Sprint Championships, Rider X and the Police Games kicking off too. Go here: www.fallscreek.com.au/eventsearch/ to check it all out and get that competitive spirit pumped up. If watching vs competing is more your style, then the Masters is the go… it’s a series of events, a night super G (the Rambler), GS training on Father Fosters (Dicky Knees a good vantage point), then the final course through ‘The Slot’ on the Summit on Sunday July 28th will be sure to see a few thrills and spills. If you’re after XC action, then the Sprint Championships can’t be missed. These explosive athletes provide a tremendous

spectacle, the very definition of power and grace. Head to the Nordic Bowl this weekend. Of course, at around this time of year the snow pack is building nicely, the base has bonded well and accumulating snow fall starts to accelerate (FYI we are smack on the 30 year average snow depth for this time of year). With that the opportunity to experience ‘off piste’ activities increase.

Falls Creek is the gateway to the high plains and some of the best and easily accessible backcountry terrain. The majesty and thrill of backcountry skiing is an experience too few get to truly experience. It’s like a great hike, but better, ‘cause it’s on snow! Having skinned and zig zagged the face, traversed the ridge, dug a pit (or two), reviewed the snowpack and profile along the way, scoped the runout paths, terrain traps and trigger points, whilst also having taken turns at breaking trail… you then eventually arrive at your desired point of descent.

Frankly, it’s hard work. It’s exhausting. But it is SOOOO worth it… ‘Earning your turns’ and the sense of accomplishment that comes with it is a great feeling. If you’re exhausted just thinking about it, Falls Creeks very own Steve Lee can provide all the same fun, with a fraction of the effort. It is a must do for intermediate and above skiers who are keen on the backcountry but haven’t necessarily the experience to do it (ie. The right training, the right equipment and knowledge - or understanding of terrain). Well, Steve has all of the above and you get to sit down, enjoy the views and get the ride of your life on his touring sleds, plus the exhilaration of ‘freshies in the back country’… book it now at the Events page, or http://www.fallscreek. com.au/listing/backcountry-tours-withsteve-lee/. Another favourite of mine and one I recommend doing, are the Snowmobile Tours hosted by Doug and Noreen. They’ve got the best office in the world and they get to ride snowmobiles across the high plains and show off Falls Creek like no other. The whole family can participate… and you won’t be disappointed, its great fun. Make sure you book, as they are extremely
