PUBLIC WARENESS For Our Pristine Valley

I

have made it my pledge as spokesperson for Friends of the Alpine and Kiewa Valleys to give only accurate information that I personally check or research. I cannot stress strongly enough that our aim is to save the Kiewa and Alpine Valleys.

These landscapes that we live in need to be preserved. There is a Statement of Significance over the Kiewa Valley from Mount Beauty to Dederang. Every resident of the Valley should ask themselves: “What is the cost to the Australian environment for this renewable journey?”

The Kiewa and Alpine Valleys are not the right place for further renewable projects.

Most in the Dederang community are stressed and anxious about all possible implications and consequences if this initial project is approved - and remember we know for a fact that a second is in the pipeline on the neighbouring property.

The whole Kiewa Valley is at risk if energy infrastructure projects get a foothold. The residents of Mount Beauty, Tawonga and the Valley should be concerned for their landscapes. The companies that infiltrate your community make landholders sign non-disclosure agreements. There is no initial community consultation. It just happens.

Our transition to renewable energy is being designed by companies (sometimes international) asking landholders near transmission lines to lease their land. They

do not need a substation - this just makes it easier for them (and cheaper). This is happening all over Victoria. In QLD they are bulldozing forests to put in solar and wind turbines. Our government is destroying the environment to save the environment. Spend five minutes of your time and google “Bush clearance for Kaban wind farm.” Have a look at what is happening. Could our ridges be next? Our trees and forests help absorb carbon from the atmosphere. Why would we destroy them?

The Mint BESS proposal for Dederang is in a valley, on slightly undulating land and surrounded by bushfire management overlays (600m to closest point). The local geography of the Kiewa Valley is unique. The Dederang Gap divides the Kiewa Valley. The Gap can create a ‘closed’ environment locking in air movements from north to south. Many locals can attest to this. In the event of a thermal runaway incident from the BESS this could possibly lock in toxic gasses. Valleys can restrict the dispersion of airborne pollutants potentially leading to higher concentrations of released substances in the air resulting in prolonged exposure for residents.

PUBLIC WARENESS Where mining companies are extracting lithium, cobalt and nickel for renewable projects, communities and environments are being devastated. This includes using unethical child labour (some call it slavery) for cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where most cobalt comes from. In the Atacama Desert Region in Chile, fragile ecosystems, scarce water resources, and ancient ways of life are at stake because of lithium mining. It is estimated to use up to 600,000 litres of water per ton of lithium produced which is a complete environmental disaster for this region. The world demand for balsa wood used in wind turbine blades is causing deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest - aka the lungs of the Earth. Here in the West, we are not shown this dark side of the renewable equation.

Friends of the Kiewa and Alpine Valleys has increased my awareness of other small communities like ours that are suffering, and there are so many, not just here in Australia, but all over the world. I am happy that I may be remembered as a person who led a community against the destruction of the Kiewa Valley as we have known it. That is my legacy to the Valley I have called home for most of my life.
