In the Trade Talk feature on page 16, Paul Clayton, Senior Sales Manager at Pride Mobility, talks about joining forces with European scooter manufacturer Medema in bringing the “high-end” Mini Crosser to the UK market.

Retailer’s Choice: The Jazzy Air 2 Powerchair from Pride Mobility

“A powerchair that is becoming increasingly popular in our showrooms is the Jazzy Air 2 from Pride Mobility. This powerchair is popular due to its capabilities of elevating the seat up to 30cm in height. At the touch of a switch, the Jazzy Air can do this elevation in just 11 seconds. The chair sports a sleek, modern look and can drive at 4mph whilst elevated. This allows the user to enjoy face-to-face engagement with others.

“It has Mid-Wheel 6 Drive and Active-Trac Suspension making the Jazzy Air 2 provide a more enhanced performance and stability both indoors and out, while its high-back reclining sport seat offers greater comfort to the user. Both armrests and the headrest are angle- and height-adjustable. The armrests can also be depth adjustable providing a more comfortable arm position for the individual.

“The newly redesigned lift features a lower seat-to-floor height, enabling the user to sit comfortably at a standard table or desk, raises and lowers by using the Air switch or VR2 joystick. It has an integrated foot platform with rubber insert and 508 mm of adjustment for comfort in both the elevated and nonelevated position.

“There are various accessories available for this chair, including a cup holder, a lap belt, an oxygen holder, rear basket, rear view mirror and a walker holder. All in all, this is a great powerchair for someone looking to use it regular for longer periods of time.”

It is ideal for users looking for an allround solution, with its ultra-narrow mid-wheel drive base. It may be small in size, but it excels in performance.

“An excellent choice for the showroom is the DC09 range of folding powerchairs from KWK. It has a 28-stone carrying capacity, yet only weighs 26.5kg. Made from aluminium alloy, it comes with a three-year frame warranty.

“There are two different width sizes, 18.5” or 21.25”, both with either a fixed back or reclining back option, which is adjusted with a gas ram at the back of the seat. Choices of colours are silver, black, blue and red in the 18.5” seat width and black and silver in the 21.25” width version.

Retailer’s Choice: Q100 Powerchair from Sunrise

“If you offer powerchairs as part of your product range, you would most definitely benefit from stocking the Q100 from Sunrise Medial, a wonderfully compact, cost-effective, indoor/outdoor powerchair which delivers on all key criteria customers now demand from this type of product. We have worked with Sunrise for many years now. Its ability in delivering value is first class, as is its dealer support

“The Q100 powerchair is brim full of features and one of its most defining is its size. It boasts an ultra-small footprint so navigating even the tightest of spaces is easy.

“As a supplier of access equipment within the home Mobility Scotland have recommended the Q100 many times as it will conveniently fit in-and-out of a through floor lift and it will navigate other tight spaces without the traditional sacrifice of stability.

“It will also get the user out of any tight-spots with its ultra-compact turning circle and effortlessly turn in narrow hallways and other restricted spaces without the need for complicated manoeuvres. So, compactness, manoeuvrability, control and comfort are high on its list of benefits.

“Another significant benefit is its weight. Coming in at only 95kg this little powerchair makes for a great option for hoisting in and out of the car. All in all the Q100 offers a high spec ultra-modern, cost effective option for many powerchair users.”

mobilityscotlandltd.co.uk

“The KWK is easily foldable with a one-touch system – just press the lever and fold. The folding dimensions are 60x36x79cm, suitable for most car boots.

“Solid front and rear tyres with a 4.5” ground clearance makes it comparable with top all-terrain models. The 2 x 250w quiet brushless motors give ultimate power.

“Other features include a tension-adjustable seat and backrest, flip-up armrests and foot plate, easy-touse 360-degree joystick controller and a turning circle of 33”.

“The KWK can be left or right-hand drive. It also comes with two 24v/6ah lithium batteries, which are chargeable on or off board and gives a 25km range.”

Retailer’s Choice: Pride Fusion Powerchair from Pride Mobility

“The Pride Fusion is a 4mph rear-wheel drive powerchair suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Although it is a standard powerchair, it has features and options that are usually only available on more complex and expensive models.

“The Option 1 model comes with power tilt and manual recline, whilst the Option 2 variant has power tilt and power recline, plus manual elevating leg rests.

“Combined with the various adjustments the user can make to backrest tension, armrest width and height, seat depth and leg rest width, joystick position, and leg rest length and angle, these all make a comfortable seating position easy to achieve.

“On the move the Fusion is very stable and capable due to large rear wheels, rear suspension and decent motors, so the user can travel in confidence over smooth and rougher terrain.

“If the user wants to take the Fusion with them on their travels either using a boot hoist or remain seated in it in a WAV, it’s not a problem. The backrest folds right down, it’s crash tested and has securement points, and a headrest is another available option. The Pride Fusion is a highly functional powerchair at a very affordable price.”

Retailer’s Choice: Ergo Traveller Powered Wheelchair from Karma Mobility

“The powered wheelchair we have chosen is the Ergo Traveller from Karma Mobility. There are lots of transportable chairs now on the market that are much lighter than the Ergo Traveller, however they do not cope well with terrains that are less than perfect!

“The Ergo Traveller can be used in town centres rather than just shopping malls and provides a comfortable ride with the S-ergo seating system as well as height-adjustable and flip-back armrests, an adjustable back angle and height-adjustable and removable footrests.

“It can be disassembled easily without the need for any tools, with the heaviest part weighing 24kg. There is also the option of attendant-mounted controls, which can be converted quickly and easily if required.

Q&A with Paul Clayton, Senior Sales Manager at Pride Mobility

CAN YOU PROVIDE SOME DETAIL ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PRIDE MOBILITY AND MEDEMA?

“The relationship between Pride Mobility and Medema is one that extends back to 1998. It was in this year that Medema brought the first Pride Mobility Jazzy chairs into Norway and Denmark.

“Since then, the relationship has flourished far beyond just the Jazzy line-up. Medema work with Pride on our scooters, Jazzy-Air, Stealth Products, Stealth cushions and

Quantum Rehab ranges and recently Medema was very successful on the Norwegian tender with the Quantum Edge and new 4-Front 2.0.

“Pride Mobility and Medema are constantly looking at ways we can help each other by joining forces to expand our respective businesses in various countries.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE MINI CROSSER?

“With a weight capacity of up to 27.7st and speeds of up to 8mph, the Mini Crosser is built with comfort in mind.

After 25 years of trading, Pride Mobility and Medema have announced their best alliance yet, introducing the Mini Crosser. Pride Mobility offers a wide range of products from lightweight travel scooters to heavyduty ones. Adding the Mini Crosser into the mix now allows Pride to offer a high-end luxury product like no other, as Paul Clayton, Senior Sales Manager at Pride Mobility explains…

“The innovative swivel seat can be adapted to cater for all shapes and sizes, with adjustable height, depth, and width settings as well as movable arm and head rests – allowing the

customer to find the perfect position for them. The light-sensitive control panel is equipped with every feature you can think of, from the mileage tracker down to the anti-theft alarm.

“As well as this, the bright LED indicator and headlights can be altered to suit the driver’s needs. With a life expectancy of at least 10 years, the Mini Crosser is built from head to toe with adjustable features to ensure ultimate comfort that lasts.”

THE MINI CROSSER IS WELL ESTABLISHED IN THE UK MARKET; WHAT MAKES IT AN ATTRACTIVE ADDITION TO THE PRIDE MOBILITY RANGE?

“Think of the Mini Crosser as the Rolls Royce of the mobility industry. It is made to perfection with consideration taken with every inch of its design. Whilst here at Pride we continue to create innovative technology such at Zero-Turn and I-Level, the Mini Crosser is taking that technology to the next level.

“Yes, it is more expensive than our other scooters within the range, but you really do get what you pay for: a scooter that can be adapted to personally fit your size shape and needs. And with a life expectancy of at least 10 years it is an investment worth making.

“Pride will be stocking both the standard Mini Crosser X1 and standard Mini Crosser X2, as well

as offering a made-to-order service for a customer that wishes to have a custom-made scooter with expected lead times of no more than four weeks.”

CAN YOU PROVIDE AN IDEA ABOUT WHAT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR THE MADE-TOORDER SERVICE?

“The possibilities are endless! The Mini Crosser comes with multiple seating options including heavy duty down to children seating. These seats also come with electric options, allowing the user to raise, recline, and swivel the seat at the touch of a button.

“If a hand throttle isn’t for them, they can opt for foot pedal acceleration instead. There is also an abundance of accessories to choose from, including handle bar extensions and windscreen visors.”

DOES PRIDE HAVE A STRATEGY WITH REGARDS INTRODUCING THE MINI CROSSER TO ITS RETAILER NETWORK?

“We will stock both the X1 and X2 models at Pride Bicester for a quick delivery, but the Mini Crosser has lots of options and extras so we will also offer special builds and the Cabin Crosser to be made to order.

“Pride will be looking to build partnerships with dealers who are keen to develop this product within

The joining of forces

Pride Mobility and Medema have been partners since 1998 with Medema being Pride’s oldest European customer.

Medema is one of the few European scooter manufacturers left and has proudly produced the Mini Crosser mobility scooter since 1981.

Jan Bill Henschke, Medema’s Export Manager, comments: “We have one goal when creating our products – to make a difference in people’s lives. The product fits the customer, the customer should not have to fit the product.

“We recently celebrated our 40th anniversary and hope to celebrate many more in the future working with Pride. We are nothing but excited to venture into the booming UK mobility market and Pride’s 750+ existing client base.”

It is exciting times ahead for both Pride Mobility and Medema with the latest collaboration allowing both parties to fulfil their mission of helping those with mobility needs live active, independent lives.

their retail environment and can back it up with a first-class knowledge of the product and its benefits. Pride will offer full training on both the retail and service aspects of the product and will support the dealers that invest the time in the product.”

WHAT IS COMING UP FOR PRIDE MOBILITY THIS YEAR IN TERMS OF NEW PRODUCTS AND EVENTS?

“Pride are introducing some new and exciting scooters to the market throughout the year and some of them will be on show at the Naidex exhibition in March. These include the introduction of the BAJA range as well as new and improved features on some of our existing lines. I really recommend coming along to the exhibition to find out.”

DOES PRIDE MOBILITY HAVE ANY OTHER NEWS THAT IT WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH READERS?

“This is an exciting but busy time for Pride Mobility UK. We have recently moved into a much bigger property where our Sitting Pretty range will be manufactured. This new property has allowed all operations to happen under one roof improving communication, customer experience and lead times.

“Also, within the Sitting Pretty brand we have a brand new patented Premier Plus mechanism; a new and improved version of our already bestselling premier mechanism. Again, this will be featured at Naidex!”

Rehability: Helping customers live independently

Rehability, a retailer in Halesworth, north-east Suffolk, celebrates 10 years of helping customers source daily living aids in May. For Director Veronica Downing, it offers a chance to reflect on a career spent helping people with their mobility for over 40 years.

Prior to establishing Rehability, Veronica’s experience of the mobility industry was as an occupational therapist working in the NHS and social services. Veronica explains:

“In the days before online shopping and high street mobility stores, it was the OTs that advised people on aids to daily living and also devised adapted items to enable people with functional loss to achieve greater independence in their daily living. For complex adaptations occupational therapists often worked with REMAP, a charity that provides custom-made equipment for disabled people.”

When Veronica left the statutory services and began working

independently, she had her first experience of using suppliers directly.

GROWING REHABILITY

The business came about when Veronica and her husband moved to north-east Suffolk and bought a small farm with outbuildings in the village of Chediston in 2002 that had the potential to be converted in commercial premises.

The idea, Veronica explains, was to establish a disability assessment

centre where she could assess people’s mobility issues with equipment that may provide solutions to their difficulties.

Completed in 2007, the barn conversion provided this facility with a showroom and a place to purchase small aids to daily living, manual wheelchairs, profiling beds and riser-recliner chairs. It was named Rehability.

In the first few years, Rehability was part of Veronica’s main company, Veronica Downing Associates, which provided medico-legal expert witness services, but in 2013, the opportunity to rent a shop in Halesworth, two miles away, came up, and Rehability (East Anglia) was registered as a company independently of Veronica Downing Associates. The shop opened in May 2013.

HIGH STREET SHOWROOM

The showroom is located on the main high street in Halesworth. Its local demographic is rural and largely elderly and, as Veronica explains, its customers like to come into the shop to see, ask and try. It is conveniently situated opposite a public library and customers can park with their Blue Badge outside the shop door.

As the showroom is close to the Norfolk border customers come from across south Norfolk and north-east Suffolk from towns such as Southwold, Aldeburgh, Leiston, Harleston, Bungay, Beccles, Framlingham and Woodbridge.

Veronica explains: “The shop which became available was previously a

white goods retailer with a good-size floor area which was kitted out with plenty of power-points and slatted racking on the walls for display and shelving, good lighting and carpettiled flooring.

“The entrance door with level threshold was wide enough to take wheelchairs and scooters, and the shopfront is two large plate-glass windows.”

Veronica states: “The aim was to sell mobility equipment in a shop that people wanted to come into and enjoy looking at and trying out products with advice that recognised their needs and not a hard-sell for the product.”

Large wall-mounted signage was assembled so that people could clearly see where products are, such as ‘Seating’, ‘Bathing’ and ‘Small Aids to Daily Living’.

The window display is often seasonal, decorative and fun, with Rehability often theming it around local events, such as Scarecrow Week in October half-term. In May, the display will be themed around the showroom's 10-year anniversary.

OT EXPERTISE

Over the 10 years’ it has been in business Rehability has gradually extended its product offering to customers.

Veronica feels her experience as an OT has been invaluable in helping to recognise the needs of her customers. She continues: “As an OT qualifying in 1976, I have always been acutely aware of how clinical so much disability equipment looked in terms of design and purpose, probably

because it came out of a need to solve a ‘medical problem’ due to illness or injury.

“Wherever I have worked, in neuro-rehab, with the elderly and with people with developmental and learning disabilities, I have wanted to enable them to do and achieve in the most normal way possible.

“Design and looks are therefore very important for mobility equipment and the place where you go to shop for such stuff needs to have the feel of a normal shop.”

It is also important, Veronica says, that her staff are knowledgeable and understanding about customers’ mobility and functional loss issues and have the interpersonal skills to engage with customers appropriately, flexibly and non-judgementally.

“My staff spend a lot of time with customer enquiries,” explains Veronica. “If we don’t have it in the shop, we will always endeavour to get an item in rather than sell something that doesn’t really meet the customer’s needs but happens to be in the shop.”

Veronica admits she could do with more space to show off her product range but as the premises is rented, they are limited in what they can do

to improve or extend their facilities.

She adds: “What we are good at is using the space that we have as effectively as possible, and displaying equipment so that customers can browse if they want to and ask questions, or for equipment to be demonstrated when they are ready to.”

CUSTOMER CARE

Shop hours in the showroom are covered by two part-time staff, Beverley and Kathy. They are very people-orientated with backgrounds in care and alternative therapies, explains Veronica.

“Both know how to make customers feel at ease and they have the sensitivity that is necessary when working with elderly people and those with additional and different needs,” she says.

“Their product knowledge is good and they know our suppliers and the key people to speak with. Any queries that they feel are beyond their expertise, they will contact me, or our technician, if it is to do with scooters and wheelchairs.”

Another key worker at Rehability is its technican, Jonathan, who has direct contact with all customers who purchase scooters and powerchairs and helps them try out a scooter or powerchair from the shop or at their home. Veronica adds: “If people have multiple or complex issues, the staff will always refer to me (with my OT hat on) for additional advice or to ensure that their recommendations are appropriate.”

Rehability has built a solid reputation for its high standard

of customer care. Veronica states that locals will often call in just to say hello! She comments: “Also, professionals, such as other OTs working in the community, carers and care agencies are confident in referring to Rehability knowing that they will be given sound advice and not just sold a product.”

BESTSELLING PRODUCTS

Mobility scooters, manual wheelchairs, rollators and riserrecliner chairs are all bestsellers.

Veronica adds: “We stock a wider range of makes than we did prior to COVID; in part due to difficulties with supply. Smaller items for daily living and incontinence products are also much needed by our customers.”

Rather than being loyal to one particular brand for different product types there are different options available, Veronica explains, because customers like to have a choice and they have varied budgets.

Rehability also sells a lot of good condition second-hand scooters, which have often been bought through Rehability in the first place.

While it sells all sorts of mobility equipment it does not sell stairlifts. “There are enough companies that do and these can provide the 24hour back-up service required after installation.” Instead the business has a referral scheme with Ransome Mobility in Ipswich.

Before Christmas, and with the scare about the cost-of-living crisis and the price increases on so many products, Veronica says that they decided to put a budget-priced

single-motor riser-recliner chair in its Christmas window – the Wilcare Riva.

Veronica explains: “This is an armchair which looks very ‘art-deco’ in style but has appealed to several customers who have tried it out, particularly those needing assistance into standing, and the chair has not compromised on comfort.”

By keeping the cost of this chair to less than £1,000, including delivery and set-up, it has meant that some of its elderly customers, or their family members, have been able to afford to buy a riser-recliner chair. Veronica adds: “It does not suit everyone, as one-size does not fit all, and we do not compromise on our assessment before the customer purchases.”

REHABILITY SHOW HOME

The barn conversion had to be rebuilt and repaired after a devastating fire destroyed it in December 2017. At that point Veronica decided to change the emphasis on it being an Independent Living Assessment Centre and converted it to a show home instead.

The Independent Living Show Home would demonstrate the sorts of homely adaptations that could be done in a timber-framed Suffolk house, and would help to better connect with the needs of an elderly demographic.

It was opened in November 2019 by Dr Therese Coffey, who is the local Constituency MP, and who was, at the time, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. By March 2020 it had to close because of the COVID-19 pandemic before re-opening in 2022.

Veronica states: “There has been a trickle of people coming to see and enquire about specific adaptations, in particular looking at options for bathrooms; the Clos-o-mat toilet and the Stiltz Duo Plus throughfloor lift and Thyssen Flow stairlift, all of which can be used. I am able to use the show home facilities for assessments, as well.”

DEALING WITH RISING COSTS

Veronica admits that while she is generally an optimistic person she is also realistic, and in retail, she says, no consecutive months are the same!

“We have seen what has happened to some mobility equipment retailers already this year,” comments Veronica. “Like many retailers, we are acutely aware that costs of manufacturing are going up, maintaining the retail premises is more expensive and most of our customers are feeling the pinch in their pockets.”

Rehability, she states, offers a range of products at different prices and staff will discuss with the customer the reasons for the range of prices.

“Rehability does not promote itself by offering the cheapest products on the market. We pride ourselves on providing a professional service, appropriate advice and the best possible customer service before and after purchase.”

Branching into eCommerce was something she considered over the years, but Veronica felt that ultimately it was not economically viable or particularly fair to customers.

She explains: “We do not have the premises to start up online sales and pack-and-dispatch, and to be honest, if I haven’t seen the customer, their disability or functional loss, measured them for fit and assessed their needs, I do not want the wasted time, costs and effort of purchases that have to be returned.

“I have visited too many homes with my OT hat on where people have bemoaned the fact that they didn’t come to us first rather than ordering online what they thought they needed

or the advert had persuaded them that they needed.”

WEATHERING THE STORM

Veronica is confident that the mobility and independent living sector will continue to thrive. She comments: “People will still age and become frail and people will continue to be disabled by illness, medical and developmental conditions.

“Statutory services cannot and do not provide the services and equipment to meet peoples’ needs as our population increases and we live longer. We don’t live longer lives as fit and strong people, but we become more reliant on ‘kit’ or ‘tools’ to enable us to manage independently and safely as our physical and mental strength declines.

“I think we have to try and weather the storm of rising costs and reduced personal circumstances and encourage our customers to futureproof their lives by buying equipment that has the potential to adapt to their changing abilities.”

Veronica points to an example of

an older customer who recently came to the shop with his wife. He had refused to buy a new armchair with powered assist to standing two years ago, she says, only to now find that after having a stroke, that he needs that facility – but he now doesn’t want to spend several hundred pounds on another chair when his present one is still ‘new’.

“Mobility retailers have the potential to assist their customers to spend wisely and retailers should not be seeing ‘pound signs’ in front of their eyes from selling mobility products or viewing their customers with mobility needs as cash-cows!”

As for the future, Veronica remains focused on Rehability remaining viable and providing a specialist resource in rural Suffolk. While improving the website will be “this year’s project”, first, the team are looking forward to celebrating 10 years on Halesworth’s high street, and no doubt the business can look forward to many more years to come.

Uniscan: Walking a step ahead

CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR STORY WITH UNISCAN?

“Aside from the occasional family discussion over the years as the business evolved and lending a hand in the factory from time to time in the early days, I had no prior experience of the mobility industry.

“Originally, I came from an engineering background but gravitated to sales and marketing.

“I joined Uniscan in 1999 after leaving my role as Senior Account Director within an international marketing organisation.

“Uniscan had reached a point in its development where dedicated

marketing was required and my credentials and experience fitted the brief. As a family business it was a natural fit for me to work alongside my father and brother.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK HAVE BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGES TO THE FIRM AS IT HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS?

“There has been greater investment in tooling to improve manufacturing lead times.

“Adapting to and embracing electronic technology was a big change, and this included creating a website and introducing barcoding. Another was bringing the powder coat spraying process in-house.”

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Uniscan was founded in 1983 by Tom Morris, the originator of the lightweight folding wheeled walker with integral rest seat. The family owned-and-run firm is now headed by Tom’s son, Geoff Morris, who is Managing Director. Geoff, who is responsible for the strategic development of Uniscan, speaks to THIIS about how he is taking the company forward…

HOW HAVE SHOPPING HABITS EVOLVED FOR WALKERS OVER THE YEARS?

“Consumers now have greater access to information, enabling them to understand their needs and how to fulfil them. There is a far greater choice of products available today, both through mobility retailers and online. This combination of choice and knowledge presents a serious challenge to manufacturers and suppliers and highlights the crucial requirement to stand out from the crowd.”

redundant from a senior engineer post and during his redundancy helped my Nan and one of her friends by making them walkers in his garden shed using copper tube. The rest as they say is history!

“There are some other highlights for me which occurred after joining Uniscan. One is identifying the need for a three-leg walker with an integral rest seat and successfully bringing it to market – these are our Triumph models, which took years to develop and finesse.

“I am also particularly proud of the fact that we are a British manufacturer and have established a solid reputation for quality and service. Despite incredible competition, we have survived and are thriving.

“In recent years I have invested lots of time, effort and money in our production facility to improve our lead times. We currently achieve 7-10 working days (and in a lot of instances much quicker) for a bespoke handmade product, which we think is pretty good. Bearing in mind that we only make walking frames it may come as some surprise that we manufacture almost 1,000 variables!”

UNISCAN HAS FOCUSED SOLELY ON MANUFACTURING WALKING FRAMES. WAS IT A CONSCIOUS DECISION NOT TO BRANCH OUT INTO SUPPLYING OTHER MOBILITY PRODUCTS?

“Our expertise and experience is walking frames and we have worked hard to establish ourselves as specialists in this field. There is a lot more to walking frames than people realise, and we recognised very early on that branching out to supply other mobility products would potentially dilute our USP and our specialised

ability to provide quality made-tomeasure products.”

WHICH PARTICULAR PRODUCT DO YOU REGARD AS YOUR BESTSELLER?

“The Triumph three-leg walker with an integral rest seat is currently our best seller. This product is a classic example of market/consumer collaboration. After extensive research we identified a requirement for a three-leg walker with a seat and in response we designed, developed and then launched the Triumph range in 2001.

“It now comes in three models with a choice of eight colours – the Triumph Plus model (our most recent addition to the range) has extra stabilising legs and comes in two seat heights. As with all Uniscan walkers the product is supplied fully assembled ensuring that retail staff or the end user do not have to put it together.”

A UNISCAN WALKER IS TYPICALLY SOLID ALUMINIUM. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE ADVANTAGES OF THIS METAL?

“All Uniscan walkers are manufactured from aircraft grade aluminium tube which meets British Standards quality. We chose this material due to its relative strengthto-weight ratio. Aluminium tube is

lightweight and malleable (meaning we can make the bends in the tube easier in production). It’s also good for the environment at its completely recyclable.

“All Uniscan walkers are mechanically fastened as opposed to being welded. This allows us to repair any damage or wear-and-tear that may occur rather than replacing the whole walker. There are many other materials used in the production of walkers, all of which have their pros and cons.

“However, the materials we use along with the production methods we employ are tried and tested. We know that a Uniscan walker can last well over 15 years as people often utilise our refurbishment service. In fact we have customers who have had one of our walkers passed on to them that we can trace back to our very early beginnings – this is happening more and more.”

WHAT ARE THE FEATURES THAT THE AVERAGE CUSTOMER IS LOOKING FOR IN A WALKER?

“There is no average customer when it comes to walkers (at least not for Uniscan). We are all different in terms of height, size, shape, and what colour we like, which is why we strive to provide a unique, bespoke solution for each customer.

“The variables mentioned previously mean that we can genuinely offer the customer an

individual product to suit them, including choices of model, seat height, frame width, braking system, frame colour and accessories.

“As we make to order no retailer has to stock every item to have access to it – retailers don’t need to place a minimum order, and they can be safe in the knowledge that we can provide the right product solution for their customer.”

CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT YOUR LATEST PRODUCTS TO HIT THE MARKET?

“The Grand Glider Plus Adjustable, which is our four-leg bariatric model, is available in four seat heights, eight frame colour choices and comes with a range of accessories. This model is manufactured to take a maximum user weight of up to 40 stone (254kg) but is also lightweight and features a built-in rest seat.

“Another recent addition to our product line up is the 23” (584mm) seat height platform Triumph Plus walker, providing a delta design solution for our taller clients. Both these products have been warmly embraced and sales activity is excellent.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK MAKES A UNISCAN WALKER STAND OUT IN THE MARKET?

“Uniscan walkers are unique in many ways. It is a British designed and manufactured product with an amazing track record in terms of quality, stability, and range. A walker from Uniscan is lightweight, amazingly strong, constructed from quality materials and specifically designed for indoor and outdoor use.

“When closed for storage it folds, locks together and stands unsupported taking up minimal floor space. We are also very fortunate to have a friendly, knowledgeable office team available to answer questions and provide help when needed.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN THE UK?

“Our products are distributed primarily through the mobility retail network here in the UK. We are very fortunate to have such a great, passionate, and dedicated group of retailers selling our products and it’s a privilege to have such a good relationship with them.

“Quite a few retailers will remember my father Tom and his infectious laugh! We also sell directly

to the public, through large buying groups and into the NHS and social services.”

ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR DEALER NETWORK, AND, IF SO, WHAT KIND OF DEALERS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

“We are always happy to consider enquiries from interested mobility retailers to open a trade account with us. We offer POS, product training, after-sales support and product advice.

“Whilst we sell directly to the public we guarantee not to sell below our MRRP as we very much value and respect our retail partners. Details of all retailers that sell Uniscan products are listed on our website and signpost people to those who stock our walkers.”

HOW DOES UNISCAN SUPPORT ITS RETAILER NETWORK?

“Uniscan work with individual retailers on a one-to-one basis to support any offers or promotions they may be running. To try and support our retailers through these challenging times we have taken the huge decision to hold our current prices despite the current economic conditions.”

HOW HAS UNISCAN WALKERS MANAGED TO NAVIGATE CHALLENGES IN THE PAST YEAR, SUCH AS SUPPLY ISSUES?

“The challenges in the past few years have been testing – not just for Uniscan but for everyone in the mobility sector. As we have been in business for close to 40 years it means that we have built up a very strong, close network of regular suppliers.

“When there were supply issues, we have been able to work with our network to find alternative solutions to maintain our production process.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNISCAN WALKERS OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?

“The next 12 months will be interesting for all businesses, and at Uniscan this will be no different.

“After almost 40 years in the industry we have weathered highs and lows, seen companies come and go and worked our way through some tough economic periods.

“Whilst this experience provides a solid platform, we have to make our way through the current economic situation but we will also be keeping an eye on where we can develop, grow and move forward as a business.

“We are constantly looking at ways we can streamline production whilst still hand-building. This ensures that we can check the quality of the build at each stage of the process – along with any additional benefits we can add to the Uniscan range of walkers.

“From the first version of the Uniscan walker back in May 1983 to present day we have never stopped listening to feedback or exploring ways to improve our brilliant product.”

Measurements in seating

1. Relative angles of the body

A standard was published in 2006 (ISO 16840-1)1 which for the first time introduced a standardised means of measuring a seated person and their seating system in a wheelchair. This is important so that one assessor’s measures are similar to the next assessor’s. Inevitably the language of standards is not always an easy read, and so Kelly Waugh and Barbara Crane produced a Clinical Application Guide (CAG)2 which is available for free download – all 329+ pages of it.

The ISO standard is in the process of being updated, and the Guide has been revised to represent the updated approach to making seating measurements. In addition the Guide talks the reader through the clinical relevance of each measure, and how to go about making the measures.

This series of THIIS articles summarise the approaches taken to measurements of the body and of a person’s seating system: in this article we concentrate on relative angles of the human body.

FIRST PRINCIPLES

A relative angle is the angle between two straight lines where they meet. A straight line is the shortest distance between two points. What we need to do for measuring the relative angles of parts of the body is first to establish these ‘points’.

This is done in the main from selecting bony prominences that can be palpated – such as the acromion process at the shoulder (which is used to approximate to the lateral lower neck point), the greater trochanter at the pelvic end of the femur (which is used to approximate to the lateral hip centre point), the lateral femoral condyle at the knee, etc (Figure 1). (In practice this can be assisted by sticking a coloured sticker over the points once found.)

Secondly, we establish a line by joining two points together. For the thigh this would be the line between the lateral femoral condyle and the greater trochanter, and is known as the sagittal thigh line. For the trunk,

In this article we look at what we need to do to measure the angles between different parts of the body with respect to the needs of a seated person, and ultimately how these angles relate to a person’s seating system. These are important aspects that ensure one person’s measurements are consistent with the next person’s.

this would be the line between the greater trochanter and the acromion process, and this is known as the sagittal trunk line (Figure 2).

RELATIVE ANGLES

A relative angle is the angle between two adjacent lines. Most of the movements available between different segments of the body related to seating occur in the sagittal plane, and thus the relative angles between two adjacent body sections are measured as viewed sagittally, i.e. from the side of the individual. To be standardised, this plane is always viewed from the person’s right, even if you are measuring what is happening on the left side of the

person. In practice, the angles are measured by aligning a goniometer along the two sagittal body segment lines of the adjacent body segments being measured (see below).

Any angle can be measured on one of two sides. For consistency and clinical intuitiveness, the flexion side of the joint is chosen. In most situations, this will result in a number less than 180 degrees.

THIGH TO TRUNK ANGLE

The most common relative angle of interest in seating is the thigh to trunk angle. The clinical relevance is that the thigh to trunk angle is a reflection of the position of hip flexion, and it can be used to help determine the desired seat to back support angle in the case of a single angle (straight) back support.

THIGH TO TRUNK ANGLE

Type of Measurement:

Relative body segment angle, right and left.

Description:

The angle between the thigh and the trunk, viewed from the side.

Landmarks used:

• Greater trochanter for Lateral hip centre point (centre of rotation)

• Lateral femoral condyle

• Acromion process for Lateral lower neck point

Body segment lines used to form angle:

• Sagittal trunk line

• Sagittal thigh line

Angle measured:

The anterior side of the angle formed between the sagittal trunk line and the sagittal thigh line.

Typical Values: 90 – 120ᵒ

This angle then also relates to the angle that a back support can be reclined to. (Note that the angle – as shown in Figure 3 – is the supplementary angle to the usually ascribed angle of hip flexion of 75ᵒ.)

SAMPLE PROCEDURE

1. Locate body landmarks and body segment lines

a. Locate the lateral hip centre point, lateral femoral condyle, and lateral lower neck point (or their approximations). The sagittal trunk and thigh lines connect these points.

• Lateral hip centre point –approximated by the most anterior point on the lateral surface of the greater trochanter.

• Lateral femoral condyle – point at most lateral aspect of the lateral femoral condyle.

• Lateral lower neck point –location can be approximated by:

• The most anterior point on the acromion process if shoulder complex is well aligned with the trunk, or

• The centre point of a line between the C7 spinous

process and the upper sternal notch.

• Sagittal thigh line - the line passing through the lateral hip centre point and the lateral femoral condyle

• Sagittal trunk line - the line passing through the lateral lower neck point and the lateral hip centre point.

2. Measure the angle (using a goniometer)

a. Place the goniometer centre over the greater trochanter, or approximate lateral hip centre point.

b. Align the stationary arm along the sagittal trunk line, pointing towards the acromion. Align the moveable arm along the sagittal thigh line, pointing towards the lateral femoral condyle.

c. Read the value representing the anterior side of the angle, on the front side of the hip.

SD Motion Assist by Steering Developments

The SD Motion Assist system can be fitted to a wide range of manual wheelchairs. The motorised wheel hubs add power at the push of the hand rims. This enables the rider to use less energy to propel forward while still using their upper body to maintain strength.
