Mobility Giant launches ‘Give Back’ scheme

Used mobility equipment retailer Mobility Giant is giving away up to four mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs every month as part of a new charity initiative to give back to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford one.

As part of its ‘Give Back’ scheme, each month the company will give away products, including 4mph, 8mph, car-boot and all terrain mobility scooters, as well as powered wheelchairs.

After seeing how profoundly its products have impacted customers over the years, Mobility Giant stated that it wanted to do what it could to make its products accessible to even more people.

People are invited to nominate someone who would benefit most from a free mobility scooter or powered wheelchair.

All names submitted into the scheme will roll over each month, meaning that each nomination has multiple chances to win throughout the year.

A round-up of the key trade stories for business leaders to digest

Motability award for First Choice Mobility

Kent-based First Choice Mobility has been awarded with a PWS Motability Dealer of the Year award in recognition of its outstanding levels of customer service.

Every year, the Motability Scheme awards powered wheelchair and scooter dealerships who have achieved a particularly high standard of customer service.

Scheme customers, new and existing, are contacted on a random basis to ask for feedback on their experience, and, from this, awards are given out in three categories according to the large, medium or small size of their operation.

First Choice Mobility, which has showrooms in Tankerton and Margate, with a third showroom due to open later this month, won its award in the ‘small’ category.

Daniel Ball, Director of First Choice Mobility, commented: “This recognition is a testament to our commitment to exceptional service and support.”

Rehasense to debut latest power add-on at Naidex 2024

On stand E120 at Naidex 2024, the latest addition to the Rehasense product range – the Eco Assist Lightweight power add-on will be making its Naidex debut alongside the portfolio of walkers, rollators, manual wheelchairs and Power Assisted Wheelchair Systems (PAWS).

Consisting of a high-strength aluminum chassis, a 350-watt motor and 48-volt battery, the Eco Assist offers a very cost-effective solution for wheelchair users looking for an entry-level power add-on to increase their independence.

Weighing 15.5kg with the battery and just 9.4kg without, the Eco Assist is easy to transport and manually clamps onto the frame of the wheelchair and disconnects with ease in one simple movement. To ensure protection against the elements, all surfaces on the Eco Assist are powder coated and anodised. Available in a stylish black finish, the Eco Assist has a maximum speed of 12.4mph and can be charged from empty to full in five hours. The twist throttle control, central

LED display on/off button and three speed modes are all housed within the handlebars while standard features include cruise control, anti-slip traction control, LED headlight and horn.

Thanks to the Eco Assist, days out with family or friends (which might have previously been a challenge in a manual wheelchair) can be planned with confidence as the Eco-Assist is extremely easy to manoeuvre and ideal for use in urban areas such as the high street or shopping centres.

“We are always looking to add new products to our portfolio, and we believe the Eco Assist will be a perfect addition to our every growing range of mobility solutions. Naidex is a vital part of our annual marketing activity as it a such a great opportunity to engage

with our three target groups – retailers, healthcare professionals and end users in one location and this year we are investing in our largest ever stand”, commented Jordan Day, UK Sales Manager, Rehasense UK.

Retailers’ guide to Naidex 2024

It’s that time of year again. Taking place from 20-21 March 2024 at the NEC in Birmingham, suppliers, charities, consumers, healthcare professionals and retailers are set to gather together for this year’s Naidex. Why dealers should visit Motion Heathcare

Why dealers should visit Triride UK

Power add-on brand Triride has a product portfolio that includes the MTW system. Born from Triride technology, the kit transforms a manual wheelchair into an electronic wheelchair, simply by replacing the motorised wheels with the user’s manual wheels.

The Trekking Power kit attaches in seconds and is easily removed, returning the wheelchair to its original state without any structural changes. Triride will be showcasing the MTW wheelchair frame, dedicated for the installation of the MTW system.

The frame is structural and selfsupporting, designed to support the stresses imparted by the front-wheel drive and the Triride rear-wheel drive. The lateral geometry acts as a reinforcement and makes the rear axle easily adjustable for multiple positions, with MTW and manual wheels only.

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE Powered wheelchairs

Wondering which powered wheelchairs are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight one product that is standing out for them…

Ezi-Fold Auto powerchair from Monarch Mobility

“Portable products are in high demand from customers. The Monarch EziFold Auto powerchair combines portability with a raft of other desirable features. Our customers particularly appreciate its sturdiness and simple button-press auto-folding ability.

“They find it’s comfortable too thanks to large pneumatic rear tyres, suspension, well-padded seat cushion and backrest (also tension adjustable) and taller users feel well supported by the height-adjustable backrest.

“What sets this powerchair apart from others is the remote attendant control. This benefits both users and anyone who assists them by offering an alternative method of controlling the powerchair, whether this be for comfort and dexterity reasons, for easier manoeuvring of the powerchair in tight spaces, or to summon the powerchair from a different location.

“The joystick controller can easily be swapped between left hand and right hand drive and set to different distances from the armrest end. Another feature liked by our customers is the handy zip-bag storage attached to the armrests. The armrests flip up easily, allowing an alternative transfer method to lifting up the footplate. The Monarch Ezi-Fold Auto has style as well as plenty of substance and practicality.”

iGo Lite powerchair from Pride Mobility

“Spring time is just around the corner and our customers are starting to think about how they are going to get out and about independently. We are finding more and more customers are looking at lightweight folding powerchairs these days. The perfect solution is the iGo Lite Carbon Fibre, Ultra Lightweight Folding Powerchair.

“At 19.8kg, it is ideal for lifting in and out a car boot. Its simple one-touch folding system makes it ideal for folding quickly and storing away. It has a lithium battery which is easy to remove for charging. It comes with a built-in USB charger allowing you to travel and stay connected with the world around you. It comes with a large secure underseat storage compartment and the control position is adjustable to make it comfortable for the end user.

“The iGo Lite comes in a stylish black Carbon Fibre and you can take it overseas with you as the batteries are flight safe.

“This really is a great powerchair from Pride Mobility and our customers love it. It is the perfect solution for customers who are looking for an occasional use chair. We love the iGo Lite at Thistle Help and I am sure our customers will continue to love it also.”

M Corpus VS power wheelchair from Permobil

“At Nexus Rehab and Lifestyle & Mobility we are one of the first UK elite dealers to offer the new M Corpus VS power wheelchair from Permobil. The M Corpus VS brings a new dimension to Permobil’s power standing, now with the benefits of the immense manoeuvrability of a mid-wheelbase drive.

“It has been designed with the user in mind and allows easy adjustment of the standing sequence and positioning of individual needs. The DualLink suspension, unique to M Corpus VS provides stability when in the standing position whilst still providing comfort and traction when driving the wheelchair.

“The M Corpus VS incorporates the new Power Platform and QuickConfig, an innovative app designed for service technicians and clinicians that offers a simpler way to configure parameters and an intuitive interface to set up user’s preferred driving, seating characteristics and standing sequences.

“QuickConfig allows us to easily customise client’s joystick buttons to meet individual’s unique needs. Power Platform is Permobil’s latest software and electronic control system. It features new, modern display graphics and a reduction in hardware components to help make programming and service simplified.”

Dash E-Fold powerchair by RHealthcare

“The Dash E-Fold is a sleek powerchair constructed with a lightweight frame. It weighs just 25.5kg, inclusive of a 10ah lithium battery.

“With a user weight limit of 125kg, the Dash E-Fold boasts an impressive range of up to nine miles, making it ideal for everyday errands and outings. For extended journeys, an optional battery is available, providing a range of 18 miles.

“Featuring an electric folding frame operated by a remote key with quick-release and power-folding actuator, the chair folds easy with no effort. When folded, it can stand upright or lie flat, optimizing storage options. Additionally, an optional transport bag is available for easy storage of the powerchair.

“Designed with user comfort in mind, it includes a one-piece footplate and a joystick that can be positioned on the left or right, along with a convenient cup holder. Furthermore, an under-seat storage bag adds practicality to the design.

“The support from RHealthcare has been amazing and makes selling the products easier knowing you have the back-up from the supplier.”

Dashi MG powerchair from RHealthcare

“At TPG DisableAids, like many mobility distributors, we have choices from several manufacturers to cover a broad range of customer requirements.

“There will be some that require a very specific specification after assessment by a clinical specialist, but there will also be some clients that present with no significant clinical needs, just a requirement to be more mobile. These clients may have breathing or heart problems rather than physical or skeletal issues. For these simple specification chairs we really like the Dashi MG from RHealthcare.

“It is extremely lightweight for a powered wheelchair at just 17kg all in. But can still carry a client up to 120kg. Although one must be realistic with what to expect from such a lightweight chair, it is so easy to transport in a car that those compromises are soon forgotten.

“With a claimed nine-mile range it is more than enough for those shopping trips to the mall, the advantage being that there will still be room in the car for shopping alongside this compact, super lightweight powered wheelchair.

“Obviously for those demanding greater performance or a higher weight capacity, there are other chairs in the range.”

Going the extra mile

Better

Mobility recently celebrated its 20-year anniversary. Elizabeth Wynn, Sales

Manager

at Better Mobility,

tells THIIS why the retailer is still going strong after all these years…

Based in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, Better Mobility was established by Lee and Jeanette Warner in 2003 after a few years of being on the other side of things and trying to source mobility equipment for their son.

The couple wanted to open a business which would meet what they felt was missing – customer service which goes the extra mile.

Better Mobility provides an extensive range of mobility aids but specialises in advanced power chairs and active wheelchairs. Customers can try products out for themselves in the

retailer’s assessment centre, which is currently being refurbished. It will be expanded in size and re-fitted, enabling more customers to come and visit and have more space for product testing.

Now celebrating its 20-year anniversary, Elizabeth Wynn, Sales Manager at Better Mobility, says that they key to the business’s longevity

is its excellent customer service, particularly over the last few years with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Elizabeth sates: “We have been in business so long because of our mentality and the way we approach things. We as a business are a ‘yes’ company. It is not often, if at all, that we say otherwise!

“We understand the frustrations customers face with answers of ‘no’ or ‘that’s not possible”

“We are out-of-the-box thinkers and always strive to go the extra mile. We understand the frustrations customers face with answers of ‘no’ or ‘that’s not possible’ and we try to overcome these barriers through years of experience and expertise.

“Not only to provide our customers the chair or equipment they need but also listen to their wants, to make it their chair, whether that be personalised spoke guards, colouring, one-off adaptations, or anything else requested!”

20-YEAR MILESTONE

Better Mobility celebrated its 20-year anniversary with a gathering of staff and suppliers at its assessment centre.

“We consider ourselves not just a team, but a family”

Says Elizabeth: “After the directors arranged a meal for all of our staff to commemorate the occasion where we had a toast to all of our staff for how grateful we are to them for their continuous hard work.”

Elizabeth has been working at Better Mobility for almost 10 years. Her role is to oversee the sales at Better Mobility, ensuring that staff have the means and solutions to provide high levels of customer service.

She continues: “I was originally introduced to the difficulties that are faced by people with disabilities when my brother was born with cerebral palsy. This is what inspired me to get involved in mobility to see what I could do to be a part of helping people overcome the challenges they faced with equipment.”

The Better Mobility team also consists of office staff, engineers, seating specialists and various departments such as HR which help keep everything running smoothly on a daily basis. “We consider ourselves not just a team, but a family,” says Elizabeth Its customer demographic stretches across the south of England, although the Better Mobility team is also happy to help with queries over the phone.

Says Elizabeth: “Unless a customer insists, we do tend to avoid sales further away, as we then may not be able to offer the same after service level we pride ourselves in - we like to

see to clients as promptly as possible and increasing this radius would likely mean a delay to that client’s after sales service, so we would usually recommend a more local dealer or a supplier to help with the next point of contact!”

SPREADING THE WORD

The business prides itself in needing little to no marketing as customers often get referred through word of mouth, when other customers share their experience.

Says Elizabeth: “Our website is very important to our staff and customers as an information source, however we do not see it as highly important for e-commerce as the majority of our products require a specialist.”

Repairs and servicing of its wheelchairs are carried out by Better Mobility’s five trained technicians, some of whom are based at its premises and some out on the road to suit the needs

of the client.

The retailer stocks a range of different products to increase the number of choices for clientele, and Elizabeth states that they enjoy working with all of their suppliers.

Every individual’s requirements are different but Elizabeth states that Permobil’s Tilite TR impresses, even if it isn’t a new product. “It is a strong, made-to-measure dual tube titanium framed wheelchair that is also lightweight.”

As with many businesses at the moment, the retailer struggles with delays and keeping costs down as its own costs have risen considerably with customs, shipping and postage, Elizabeth explains, but the future for the business is positive. “Better Mobility plans to continue growing both its showroom and staff, while striving to keep concentrating on offering a great customer service.”

Are they safe to drive a powered wheelchair?

People have been denied a powered wheelchair because it has been considered they might not be safe to use one. But whose safety has been the prime consideration? The driver - or the people and the environment around the chair? In this article we look at means to provide people with the skills deemed necessary for safe use of a powered wheelchair so that everyone and their surroundings are better protected, and the occupant can happily lead a more independent life.

At a conference in September 2023 in Leiria in Portugal, an OT, João Aires, with his colleague Ádner Silva, presented a case study of Bernardo, an intelligent young man with cerebral palsy, who was living a life of being pushed around in a wheelchair (Figure 1).

He and his parents wished that he be issued with a powered wheelchair so that he could start living an independent and freer lifestyle. He went along for an assessment at a local centre and

Figure 1. Bernardo living a dependent lifestyle in an attendant-propelled chair

was placed in an electric wheelchair and asked to drive it along a corridor. But when he came to a corner he was unable to get round it successfully at the first attempt, and on that basis alone the prescription was denied!

How often have we heard this story around the world? The good news is that, with perseverance, Bernardo now has his powered mobility and is driving it skilfully (Figure 2). The disappointment of the original refusal could have been avoided if Bernardo had been given the chance to have developed the required driving skills before the assessment.

LEARNING TO DRIVE

As we learn spatial awareness from early childhood we start crawling backwards before forwards. We totter and fall into things as we learn to walk. However, for those who have restricted mobility in early life, the only way they could develop spatial awareness would be by using a powered wheelchair. And often these individuals too will start by driving backwards. A powered wheelchair can also be the only means by which they have a chance to learn to play – and also be mischievous and express themselves fully.

So, how can we learn to drive a wheelchair safely? Airline pilots are not expected to get behind the controls of

a plane and fly passengers around until they have learned to fly that type of plane. The way they learn is through a flight simulator. The good news is that wheelchair ‘flight simulators’ (i.e. driving simulators) are also available these days for aspiring powered wheelchair users.

ALTERNATIVE CONTROLS

Powered wheelchairs are controlled as standard by a joystick, and this can be positioned not only for hand use, but also for chin or foot use. However, there are some people with some neurological disorders who do not have the fine motor control to be able to control a joystick, but switch arrays behind the head or set

in trays, for example, can provide an alternative means to drive the chair, e.g. one switch for straight, another for left, and a third for right. The use of ‘proximity’ switches allows speed control: the nearer the switch, the faster the travel. Adding in modern computer technology means that the signals from each of the switches can be processed to achieve smooth and instinctive fine changes of direction when driving a chair. The Stealth i-Drive® system1 is an example that achieves this by a computer capable of processing tens of thousands of signals a second.

COMPUTER GAMING

We now have the means to drive a chair, whatever the impairment, for example by small movements of the head, or a finger.

The next challenge is what can be used to learn how to use these control systems accurately. One fun means is the i-Drive® Loonz™ game2 (Figure 3). This is a computer game downloadable from the App Store for use on an iPad or iPhone. It can be played using a joystick or alternative switches, and fine tunes the user’s motor skills while the user is having fun picking up ‘rewards’ while moving from level to level.

VIRTUAL REALITY (VR) DRIVING SIMULATOR3

The next stage of progression is moving from the two-dimensional world of gaming to the three-dimensional world of real life. This is where the i-Drive® VR Driving Simulator package comes in (Figure 4). This links controls connected to an i-Drive® Assessment Interface to a VR headset (Figure 5).

The programme offers three levels of skill and real-life simulation.

The first level takes place in a large virtual gymnasium with few distractions and obstacles (Figure 6). This level allows the driver to accommodate to the VR experience and begin simple powered wheelchair movements. The driver can progress to tasks with cones, driving between lines, and turning.

which are commonly transferred to from a wheelchair. This final level presents more challenging tasks and distractions, as well as changes in speed, lighting, spatial perception, distance, and sound.

THE FUTURE IS HERE

The second level takes place outdoors where the driver can explore safely the environment of a quiet wooded trail (Figure 7). This level provides a sense of movement over varied terrain.

The third level provides a more closed area experience, simulating the challenges found in a home (Figure 8). The driver navigates through rooms, hallways, and between furniture. The driver can also practise positioning a power wheelchair close to objects

Powered mobility provides the means for mobility-impaired individuals to have a better quality of life. Modern alternatives for controlling a wheelchair mean that even those with the most severe impairment have a means to drive a chair (and use the same switches to control their environment), and current powerful computing means that the driving can be both intuitive and smooth.

Cutting-edge computing also means that the tools are now available to train users through games and simulators so that the user is ‘good to fly’ as soon as they have delivery of their powerchair. These advancements should make the safe provision of powered wheelchairs possible for a wider variety of users enabling them to experience greater freedoms and more rewarding lives.

Trusted Assessors: The ‘best practice approach’ for mobility retailers

A new training-based programme enables customerfacing staff to learn the skills involved in assessing for suitable home adaptations equipment.

Trusted Assessing and Care Training (TACT) recently announced that it had partnered with the British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) to launch a brand-new course designed for retailers of independent living equipment.

The Trusted Assessors: Assessing in the Retail Environment course is designed to accredit retailers.

The new training-based programme enables customer-facing staff to learn the skills involved in assessing for suitable home adaptations equipment. The course was developed by TACT in consultation with BHTA and its members, and it is accredited by OCN London.

BHTA represents over 400 organisations in the UK that are involved in the manufacturing, distributing, and retailing of healthcare and assistive technology products. It operates a Code of Practice to ensure high-quality service levels for the sector.

Retailers of equipment for independent living are experts in the product solutions they stock, states TACT, and this enables them to check suitability and tailor products to individual people’s needs. Many retailers are relied on in their local

areas to visit people at home and demonstrate equipment to help people to live independently.

OT MODELS OF PRACTICE

The Trusted Assessor model is based in occupational therapy models of practice, according to TACT, and learning this approach enables an assessor to evaluate the person and their environment in a systematic way to identify the best solution.

Assessors are taught when to refer a case to an OT (occupational therapist), and this ensures best use of staff and resources whilst speeding up access to much-needed equipment.

Trusted Assessor training at level three, for example, is designed to enable staff to conduct assessments with clients, measure for and prescribe minor equipment and adaptations for the home using clinical reasoning and best practice and to be able to reflect and adapt future practice.

Learners are taught how impairment of function impacts on general wellbeing and the ability to perform a task, they take account of risk when selecting suitable equipment and understand the impact of the built environment. Assessors are trained to

think about the impact on other family members and consider a range of possible equipment solutions. As far as measuring and fitting the equipment, they are taught how to know when fitting is correct.

Clare Barber, Director of TACT and an OT specialising in this field, commented:

“It’s a splendid example of how staff already visiting older and disabled

38 | Deep Dive | thiis.co.uk

people at home can be taught to carry out simple assessments for home adaptations with a best practice approach based on the Comptency Framework.

“Expanding the range of assessors working in the UK by harnessing the skills of this specialist retail sector is an innovative way of speeding up access to much-needed equipment.”

David Stockdale, Chief Executive at BHTA, added: “This programme underlines BHTA’s commitment to quality and raising standards in the sector.

“The Trusted Assessor model is known and in widespread practice

“It has given us some real credibility”

Becoming a Trusted Assessor means that a retailer steps above the usual run of the mill and becomes a proper ‘solutions provider’ says Alastair Gibbs, Director of Hereford-based TPG DisableAids

“For TPG DisableAids the Trusted Assessor scheme has been a real boost. We have various staff trained from Level 2 to Level 4 and it has given us some real credibility with a number of housing associations and local authorities.

‘Those that were looking for a differentiator and an indicator of commitment to quality, found it in our association to BHTA and Trusted Assessor.

“There is no doubt that our industry of care and consideration whilst dealing with a very vulnerable client base, is at risk of being soiled by the few that see it as ‘easy pickings’.

“There are those that will target sales people with turnover and profit above assessment and suitable solutions. The real problem is that there is very little barrier to entry to the private market and little support for those that are targeted.

“The responsible retailer will, however, be looking to take a far more ethical and long term view on their place within this marketplace.

“A sure fire way to do that is to

ensure that the customer facing staff within your company are suitably well trained. Not just in the features and benefits of the products you offer, but in proper assessment of the client and the environment in which the intended product is to be used.

“The product training should be a given. How can anyone be persuaded to buy something if the seller does not understand it themselves?

“The wider assessment of any given situation can be greatly assisted with appropriate training as a ‘Trusted Assessor’.

“This ‘Trusted Assessor’ training is delivered by healthcare professionals such as occupational therapists, who themselves have been fully trained over many years of theoretical and practical training, to deliver a reasonable level of assessment within a far shorter period.

“The candidate will have objective outcomes to include understanding the basics of person centred assessment.

“They will be able to describe the ethical sale of goods. They will have knowledge of the health and social care sector, and which services are available. They will be able to understand the impact of long term conditions on a person’s health. They will be able to understand the movements and basic ergonomics of the person, and they will be able to understand any communication factors

in health, social care, and housing services across the UK. This initiative enables retailers to be aligned with a best practice approach in assessing for equipment that in turn means they can be integrated into local pathways.

“Older and disabled people can expect to gain faster access to important solutions for their independence and be confident in the impartial advice provided.”

Retailers wishing to find out more about the course can email TACT on info@trustedassessing.com or visit trustedassessing.com and completing an enquiry.

that are relevant in the assessment. The whole course is then accredited by the OCN London.

“In practical terms this means a retailer steps above the usual run of the mill and becomes a proper ‘solutions provider’ rather than just a retailer.

“In many cases this qualification, coupled with practical experience, becomes an additional service that can be retailed in its own right.

“Proper documented pre- and postassessments can create tremendous added value and enhance the user experience of their entry into the world of assistive technology. This transition from being fully fit and healthy, to being in need of assistance can be an anxious time for many. The individuals mental wellbeing can be affected as well as their physical condition.

“Being a Trusted Assessor also goes a long way to creating job satisfaction for your team. Coupled with BHTA membership you will be telling the buying world that you are prepared to do things properly, ethically and with a real understanding of getting the best possible outcome for your clients.”
