The UK Government has committed to reviewing legislation that requires users of powered wheelchairs that weigh more than 150kg to have driving licences and insurance for their wheelchairs.
The pledge to review the ‘Using Mobility Scooters And Powered Wheelchairs’ legislation is thanks to a campaign led by the Wheelchair Alliance, an organisation that champions the needs of wheelchair users across England.
Its campaigning culminated in a meeting in Westminster between its CEO, Nick Goldup, and chair Karen Pearce with Simon Lightwood MP, Minister for Local Transport in July.
The meeting focused on the need for change to dated legislation, including the use of outdated language and referring to wheelchairs as ‘invalid carriages’.
Nick Goldup of the Wheelchair Alliance, said: “We are beyond proud to have made such a positive impact with our campaigning and are delighted that the government have committed to reviewing the legislation.”

Wondering which bathing and toileting items are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…
Rhian Pita Marketing Manager at Ableworld ableworld.co.uk
“The Bath Bench from Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare is a reliable and costeffective bathing and toileting aid designed to improve user safety, comfort, and independence.
“With a lightweight but sturdy aluminium frame, the bench is easy to handle and durable enough for regular use in both domestic and care environments. The moulded plastic seat includes built-in handles for stability, with drainage holes to reduce water build-up and improve hygiene.
“Dual side handles make transfers easier, while height-adjustable legs allow the bench to be customised to the user’s needs. Non-slip rubber feet provide additional stability and protect bathroom flooring.
“With a weight capacity of up to 135kg, this bath bench offers broad suitability across a range of users. Its simple assembly, robust construction, and adjustable design make it a practical choice for care providers, mobility retailers, and healthcare settings seeking to offer dependable bathing support solutions.”
“Here at TPG we have a broad range of solutions for bathing and toileting, many of which are vital to those with impaired movement to allow them the privacy and dignity of carrying out the most basic of human functions in private.
“Our choice in this category, and by far the most impactful on the dignity, privacy and mental wellbeing of the clients, would be the wash/dry toilet.
“Our first choice in these would be the Closomat Palma Vita. It is an
incredibly reliable and effective wash/ dry toilet that replaces the existing W.C. and restores independence to the user.
“The ability to go to the toilet in private, without the use of a carer or family member assisting, cannot be underestimated. The impact on the individual’s mental health can be severely affected if they lose that privacy.
“The addition of alternative seats, support arms and various control options make it a 'go to' product.”
Alastair Gibbs Managing Director at TPG DisableAids tpg-

“The Cosby Toilet Surround is a standout addition to any bathroom, especially for those with reduced mobility. This product offers value for money and as it is designed as a freestanding, wrap around frame, it requires no permanent installation while offering immediate support during toilet transfers.
“Crafted from steel and coated with an anti corrosive, thermoplastic layer, the frame promises long-lasting performance and is easy to clean— ideal for high-use environments. The moulded plastic armrests are ergonomically contoured for a comfortable, firm grip, while non-slip, non-marking feet provide reliable stability without damaging the floor.
“The Cosby surround is easily adjustable in height and in width using e-clips. This allows the height to range from 64cm-79cm, and the width has a range of 48–61cm. The width between the arms is 43-56cm, allowing ample space for users. Despite its light weight of 4.5kg, it supports users up to 196kg.
“Another feature of the Cosby Toilet Surround is its stackable design, taking up less space, perfect for care homes or for displaying them in your showroom.”
Karen Sheppard Managing Director of People First Mobility
“We have supplied many tilt-inspace shower commode chairs over the years to the care sector and to people living at home. A new model that has become available is the Alerta Aqua Community Tiltin-Space Shower Commode Chair. This chair is ideal for use in care homes, hospital and homecare environments.
“The transfer-friendly design offers a safe solution for people with many different conditions, covering needs including a bedside commode to a mobile, multifunction shower and commode chair. When the chair is being used for toileting, it can be placed over a conventional toilet or can be used in a freestanding position.
“The tilt-in-space function is controlled by gas struts, simply by pressing an easy-to-use lever to adjust the angle of the chair. It comes with four braked castors, height-adjustable
and multi-angle head support and adjustable and detachable footrests which come with heel straps.
Another great feature on the chair is the flip-up armrests, allowing for side transfers.
“The height of the seat can be adjusted from 59.5cm-64.5 cm and is made from an aluminium alloy frame. It takes a maximum user weight of 120kg.
“The price of this chair is really competitive making it more affordable for people. I believe it will be a good option for our customers who require a chair that meets their needs but doesn’t break the bank.”

The lift also includes a safety mechanism that prevents it from lowering if there is insufficient power to raise the user back out of the bath.
“The Bellavita Bath Lift comes highly recommended by Ability Plus, who recognise its exceptional design and functionality. In summary, it combines practicality, safety, and comfort, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a dependable bathing aid. Its thoughtful design and reliable performance help users maintain their independence and enjoy a more comfortable bathing experience.”
maintain independence in their own home, avoiding the need for assistance in the bathroom. This, of course can boost confidence and preserve dignity, whilst offering peace of mind to family members.
“The Indiana boasts advanced slip resistant surfaces and a generously wide, low access door. This stylish glass opening has been specifically designed for maximum safety and can be lifted out of position if rapid access is required.
“Another significant feature is the BioCote antimicrobial technology which is built into the bath at the
manufacturing stage. The technology and additives have been proven to reduce up to 99.99 per cent of bacteria such as E.coli, Salmonella and MRSA.
“Overall, a walk-in bath combines practical, safer, accessibility with the restorative benefits of warm water, helping individuals enjoy a more comfortable, and self-reliant lifestyle.”

“When it comes to showering aids, few products have stood the test of time as well as the Etac Clean Shower Commode Chair. Designed with both comfort and practicality in mind, it has become one of the most popular choices across both care and private homes alike.
“One of the key reasons for its popularity is its versatility. The Etac Clean is available in three fixed seat heights – 44cm, 49cm and 55cm – with an adjustable height model also offered, ensuring there’s a solution to suit most requirements. The chair also comes in two colour options, white or green, which complement most bathroom settings.
“The Clean is available as either an attendant-propelled or self-propelled model, giving users and carers the flexibility to choose the best option for independence and support. Its thoughtful design, with easy manoeuvrability and plenty of space for safe transfers, has made it a trusted choice with our customers.
“Another strength is the wide range of accessories. From a pan holder that transforms the chair into a commode, to seat and back cushions for extra comfort, the Etac Clean can be tailored to meet individual needs. Other accessories further enhance function and safety, ensuring that users feel secure and carers find daily cleansing routines easier.
“Durable, hygienic and ergonomic, the Etac Clean has earned its reputation as a market leader. It combines Scandinavian design with practical innovation, making everyday life safer and more dignified for thousands of users in the UK and beyond.”

AI automation really can help to transform your mobility business, as Mike Glynn explains…
Some of you might remember the moon landing of 1969. “One mall step for man, one giant leap for mankind, a momentous occasion in history…” Now consider this. Your current iPhone is a million times more powerful than the Apollo computer. And that’s before you add AI. Let’s take a look at ChatGPT, which is the one most people are familiar with. What is it?
Essentially, it’s a generative, pretrained transformer, which means that it creates words and sentences from what it’s learned previously to give you answers. The clever bit is that it can look at everything and figure out what matters most and respond with an answer that makes sense. And if you don’t understand, ask another question just as you would when talking to another human being; yes, you read that right.
The most innovative technology on the planet is available to you almost free, and if you’re not using it, at least understand how it can help you run your business.
And it’s getting better, the next generation GPT-5 is here with an entire army of AI-powered agents that can work independently.
If you’re not experimenting with this
“This isn’t a time management problem. It’s a systems problem”
technology, now is the time to start and stop asking yourself, “Should I be using AI in my business?”
If you own or manage a mobility business, you may be familiar with paperwork piling up, suppliers chasing you (or you chasing them!) or realising those promised follow-ups have slipped through the cracks. By 5pm, you’re exhausted, yet the 'important stuff' still hasn’t been done.
Here’s the truth: this isn’t a time management problem. It’s a systems problem. And the good news? The solution is already here – it’s called automation.
When business owners hear “automation,” they often think of giant corporations with huge tech budgets. But that’s outdated thinking.
AI automation is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. And the best part? It’s affordable for retailers of any size, so you can enjoy the benefits without breaking the bank.
With platforms like Growth Accelerator (GHL), you can bring the same operational efficiency used by national brands into your store, without the national brand price tag.
Think of it as your all-in-one digital assistant. It work 24/7, it never forgets and it can grow with your business.
Growth Accelerator isn’t just another software platform – it’s a business growth engine. It helps to ensure that you never lose a lead again. The smart follow-up flows will help to keep
prospects warm until they’re ready to buy.
Online booking can be made easier for customers as it will enable them to book demos or assessments without picking up the phone.
The software can convert email message and SMS ensuring campaigns run automatically, ultimately bringing customers back without you lifting a finger.
You can also obtain one inbox for all messages from Facebook, WhatsApp, email, SMS, helping to keep them under better control.
Live dashboards can also help businesses see what’s working and what’s not in real time.
Don’t try to automate everything at once. It is always best to start small and build momentum. Try to ensure all staff are trained to use it as this tool is only as good as the people using it.
Avoid also using disconnected systems. Choose one platform that handles everything.
If you’re ready to stop drowning in admin and start building a business that runs smoothly – even when you’re not there – automation is the key.

Lifestyle & Mobility has achieved its latest retail goal with the opening of an innovative new showroom in Hertfordshire…
Essex-based retailer Lifestyle & Mobility has opened a new showroom focused around prescriptive products in the Hertfordshire town of Hatfield.
A provider of mobility equipment and products to facilitate the quality of life and independence of customers, Lifestyle & Mobility operates in locations mostly across the south of England including Southend-onSea, Basildon, Bournemouth, Harlow, Lowestoft, Ramsgate and Telford as well as online.
The new showroom is located in the Hatfield Galleria, a large shopping centre which stretches over the A1. The store was opened in style by Paralympian and world champion wheelchair racer Richard Chiassaro alongside para shooting champion William Hawkes-Reynolds.
Customers experiencing the showroom launch were also treated to a visit from disability influencer Ashley Archer, AKA DJ Rise, who performed a set outside the store.
The store opening also saw staff take part in a competitive game of
wheelchair basketball outside the entrance.
Lifestyle & Mobility’s Hatfield store follows in the footsteps of the retailer’s flagship Basildon store, ‘Lifestyle & Home’, which was opened by the retailer in 2023 and showcases interior design and furniture offerings. It also draws on the company’s technical expertise by putting an emphasis on high-specification prescriptive mobility products.
The store manager is Tom Doyle, who, while new into the mobility industry, has vast experience and knowledge in retail, working with top brands such as Gant, O2 & Samsung. Darren Macey, Business Development Manager at Lifestyle & Mobility, says: “Tom brings a corporate and extra professionalism to that site. He has also been mentored by director Simon
Greenway, who heads up our Nexus Rehab business and also works from this site.”
Nexus Rehab provides a dedicated and specialist service for customers with complex rehabilitation needs. Now an established operation under the Lifestyle & Mobility umbrella, the brand has a dedicated space at Hatfield with its own assessment centre. This includes a state-of-the-art assessment room which is used by showroom assessors, occupational therapists and case managers.
With the new store having a particular emphasis on prescriptive product options, Lifestyle & Mobility has been working with Richard
“We want to be part of the movement that can help change the perception and stigma of mobility equipment right now”
“It’s not just the single riser chair, customers are choosing to purchase the three-piece suite”
Chiassaro, whose personal experience as a paralympic athlete adds to his expertise in prescriptive products for all customers with sporting needs.
Lifestyle & Mobility is also working alongside RGK Wheelchairs to provide the next generation of athletes sporting wheelchairs and equipment. Part of the Sunrise Medical group, RGK Wheelchairs designs and manufactures sports wheelchairs used by some of the world’s top athletes.
Following on from the success of the ‘Lifestyle & Home’ showroom in the Basildon branch of Lifestyle & Mobility, the Hatfield store has a ‘Rooms & Home’ concept which features a curated selection of room design suggestions with many of these centred around mobility furniture.
Darren commented: “The whole point of mixing mainstream furniture alongside mobility is to continue to break down the barriers that the disability community face and make mobility more inclusive and accessible to more people.”
He continues: “We want to be part of the movement that can help change the perception and stigma of mobility equipment right now, and for the next
generation to come. Throughout all Lifestyle & Mobility stores, you will see that we have created a modern fresh environment which is not just for the elderly, it’s for all!”
In the ‘Rooms & Home’ section, the LuXe Oakleigh furniture range has been a highly successful product for the retailer, Darren says. This range includes a dual motor riser recliner as well as motorised two- and threeseater recliner sofas. Darren says: “It’s not just the single riser chair, customers are choosing to purchase the three-piece suite.” He continues: “LuXe Mobility has done a tremendous job in breaking down those barriers in
making furniture that is not medical looking. We feel this is the main reason why customers have been choosing the Oakleigh and other ranges of the LuXe furniture range.”
Darren continues: “As a business we will never stand still and we will continue to look for innovative products, like our recent collaboration with MovingLife.”
In January 2025, THIIS reported how Lifestyle & Mobility had obtained an exclusive retail sales agreement with MovingLife, whose products include
“As a business we will never stand still and we will continue to look for innovative products”
the Atto folding mobility scooter range. The store features dedicated spaces to some of Lifestyle & Mobility’s key partners, which are in theme with the light and airy, modern approach at the store holds. These brands include Sunrise Medical, Permobil, MovingLife, Motion Healthcare and Spex.
LuXe Mobility, a key partner of Lifestyle & Mobility for over a year, also has a presence within the new store.
Darren adds: “LuXe Mobility are shaking up the industry in product development and taking mobility equipment to the next level. They truly understand the end user and have a unique approach when it comes to marketing and in the way they do business.”
The Luxe CarbonLite folding mobility scooter has been a standout product for Lifestyle & Mobility, Darren says. “It was one of the first fully carbon fibre products on the market, and they bring massive innovation into the industry.”
So far footfall into the Hatfield store has been very good, Darren says, and he thinks this will only get better. “The shopping centre has recently been brought by new owners, and they are currently investing millions in to the centre.”
Lifestyle & Mobility is in the process of recruiting a disability influencer, who will not only be working out of the store full time, but also promoting it the local
community and far beyond. “We are very excited about this new opportunity and collaboration, as we are always looking for new ways to stay on top of current trends and things that work in other industries,” Darren adds.
Whilst the Hatfield store does highlight newer areas of Lifestyle & Mobility’s business, it also stays true to the core of what Lifestyle & Mobility is all about. Ron Sverdloff, who founded Lifestyle
& Mobility in 2002, was among those present at this latest showroom milestone. As Darren concludes: “Ron founded the company with a simple goal: To provide the highest-quality mobility equipment and lifestyle products, impart expert knowledge, and offer unrivalled aftercare.
“No matter how many stores may be opened in the future, and however diverse the product and service range may become, that will never change.”

As German manufacturer ISKOmed marks its 30th anniversary, THIIS takes a look at how the firm is planning to continue its success story in the UK…
For 30 years German manufacturer ISKOmed has been developing and manufacturing nursing and special beds, examination and treatment couches, standing devices and mobility aids used in inpatient and home care as well as in rehabilitation. THIIS speaks to Greg Whelan, Managing Director of ISKOmed UK, about its bestselling products and what the firm has planned for the future…
CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT ISKOMED AND HOW IT CAME TO BE ESTABLISHED?
“ISKOmed has been a long-standing
German supplier into the UK for specialist mobility related products designed for end user comfort, support and independence.
“Included in these are very unique and leading products such as the Rotadorm range of rotational chair beds, standing, bariatric and community beds. Coupling these products with the highly regarded standing frame range and we have a solution for most standing and sit-tostand needs for end users.
“Typically customers have heard of our products due to our time in the market but they can also come from the mobility, online and local authority channels.”
ISKOMED IS CELEBRATING 30 YEARS IN BUSINESS. HOW HAS THE FIRM EVOLVED OVER THAT TIME?
“Thirty years is a long time in business especially when you design, innovate and engineer your own products. As a German manufacturer and global distributor of our product range we have developed our markets and continue to develop our products and offering to customers.
“I believe that our ability to listen to our customers and offer products that meet the customer’s expectations have been a key factor in our ongoing success. Afterall, to be in such a
competitive industry, in the face of current-day challenging financial limitations, for 30 years means that our customers recognise quality, consistency and reliability, which is where I feel we have come from and maintain as our business ethos.”
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT ISKOMED AND WHEN DID YOU START WORKING FOR THE FIRM?
“Although I have been involved with the German parent company through exclusive distributors of ISKOmed products since 2017 I now head up its UK operation and launched ISKOmed UK as a subsidiary business which is now approaching its first anniversary in the UK.
“Formally, as Managing Director, I now have the responsibility to promote the ISKOmed brand into the UK market encompassing our whole product range.”
WHAT DO YOU THINK HAVE BEEN THE STANDOUT ACHIEVEMENTS FOR ISKOMED?
“In terms of standout achievements I feel that we have invested heavily in our branding and access to the market through various exhibitions and conferences and have pulled together a great senior team and great Trusted Partner Network and not forgetting some incredible collaborations to bring our products to an even wider and discerning market.”
“Access to products is a key factor in business and the development of a Trusted Partner Network is proving beneficial to not only ISKOmed UK but to those partners and the clients seeking our services.
“Previously, two of our product ranges were distributed through two exclusive partners namely Quest 88 for standing frames and Nexus DMS (latterly Apex Medical and more recently Wellell UK) for beds, which proved successful for a very long time; however landscapes change and to secure your position in your sector you need to have a strategically selected network of partners who can manage
the products in support of the brand.
“We are growing our network, and we are selective, as quality products need specific skill sets and infrastructure to support them, and where we have secured new partners we also reciprocate with our support for their activity.
“Again, it is as much about partnering as it is about collaboration. The biggest change in terms of branding is that we have now with MDR and Brexit opted to promote our own brand and not to be masked by others names for our products. So, if you are seeking our branded products you can rest assured that you will be dealing with a designer, producer/manufacturer, marketer and sales organisation that is inextricably linked to the German parent business.”
“Our bestselling products are across two of the product ranges. Firstly, in beds, our Rotadorm Care bed enjoys, amongst others, some very unique features, namely its split back rest for additional thoracic and lumbar support, as well as its ability to be reprogrammed at the touch of the hand control to suit the needs of the individual client's body shape and required comfort, all without the use
of tools and specialist and expensive programming equipment.
“This in itself makes the product incredibly flexible in terms of users preferences and doesn’t fall into the trap of being a make-do product.
“Loan stores are very impressed in how they can continually reuse the products with various clients and still benefit with optimum comfort for each of them.
“Secondly, the Levacare Pro standing frame is a workhorse product proving its metal in terms of performance, lifetime costs and outright reliability.
“Customers are impressed by its incredible service life, robust functionality and range of adjustment to suite a variety of clients from 1.2 metres up to two metres tall and various conditions. It is truly a great product.”
“We have been developing three new products which are due for UK release this year. The products will be launched at the OTAC Moving & Handling Conference in Cardiff (2 October) and The OT Show in Birmingham (26-27 November) and they will all be new variants of the Rotadorm range.
The Atom Fold is flying off shop floors nationwide – ultra
Upgrade the sale with the optional affordable second battery – it tucks neatly into the footwell, doubling the range with zero hassle. No extra storage. Just extra margin. Easy.
“The European insurance-led approach is something that we could see being introduced into the UK”
“Each product is a new development and moves us into a prime position to offer solutions to a wider audience with their designs. Make sure to follow us on LinkedIn, across our social platforms and THIIS Magazine for the launches.”
IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT WITH REGARDS TO HOW ISKOMED PRODUCTS ARE MANUFACTURED?
“In today’s industry with tighter regulation, the areas for companies to operate without conformance are happily disappearing. That gives genuine manufacturers such as ISKOmed hope that we will at last see the end of poorly-designed and manufactured products appearing on the UK market.
“Speaking from our own experience we ensure all products are suitably registered and conform to regulatory standards whilst at the same time building products that are designed to last, removing the throwaway society mentality that encourages excessive manufacturing and the environmental impact that process creates.
“Quality in design, manufacture and reliability equate to lower emissions, reduced transportation, reduced packaging and lowered carbon footprint for all involved with our products.”
WHICH PRODUCTS ARE MOST LIKELY TO INTEREST MOBILITY RETAILERS FOR THEIR CUSTOMERS?
“There is a range but if I were to pull out two in particular it would be our Rotadorm rotational bed range and the dual (two-person) profiling bed, the Belladorm Duo.
“We support all of our partners and retailers with free no-obligation demonstrations/assessments anywhere in the UK along with all relevant marketing materials and sales and service support.
“For those who opt to stock our products we offer full training and
support in their initial sales activity ensuring they are completely comfortable with the functionality and operation of the equipment.”
“To get in touch, email enquiries@ iskomed.com, call me personally on 07759 448 118 or go to our website and contact us through our web page. You can also message us through our LinkedIn page, ISKOmed UK.”
“We are seeing very concerning changes in the marketplace and the loss of major providers into local authorities is very worrying. This will hopefully be picked up with alternative providers but the impact on the homecare and rehabilitation market could see more self-funding.
“The access to equipment is facing tighter financial control and with
local authorities seeking greater cost savings this could see the burden of cost for home care equipment and rehabilitation equipment being placed onto the end-user.
“Who knows what the final result will be, but the European insurance-led approach is something that we could see being introduced into the UK in the future.”
“We have a very busy schedule for the rest of 2025 and the whole of 2026 has been planned out already.
“This includes the launch of a new website, being the main sponsor at the Moving and Handling Conference in Cardiff on the 1st October, and attending all of the remaining OTAC events in 2025 (Liverpool, Watford and Brighton), as well as being signed up for all OTAC events in 2026.
“We will be supporting a key partner at the OT Show as well as having a presence on a second stand with a well respected assistive technology organisation with an exciting development with our products on stand at Rehacare in September.
“Whilst we have more events planned we will be keeping you posted via our social media platforms as we finalise these.”

We are receiving a multitude of sensory inputs at all times. Where are they coming from, and how do we balance them all out, and make sense of them?
Aristotle described us as having five senses: sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch. These ‘exteroceptive’ sensors cover feedback from the outside world. They are the easiest to understand because we also associate them with visible organs, namely: eyes, nose, tongue, ears, and skin, respectively. However, these five senses exist alongside our equally important ‘interoceptive’ sensory systems, including our vestibular and proprioceptive sensors, which provide feedback from our internal systems.
When providing equipment, how can we best prescribe items which accommodate sensory function, or dysfunction, alongside any physical postural needs?
We all have our sensory preferences, be it loud versus soft music, bright lights versus calming shades, a soft bed versus a firm mattress, simple food versus a highly spiced meal, or vice versa. While writing this article, I have some 1940s Glenn Miller music playing in the background in that it helps me to concentrate on the matter at hand while it blocks out other general potentially distracting sounds. The music also has an interoceptive feedback in that it makes me feel good, since I enjoy the upbeat rhythms and harmonies. Another time I might choose Beethoven’s 7th symphony, and Mozart’s 21st piano concerto. My wife, on the other hand, finds music in the background a distraction.
For some people their sense preferences are so strong that they will seek out sources of their preference, or, conversely, at the other extreme, they will take strong avoidance tactics. Ali Neal specialises in managing sensory in- and output for children with behavioural and physical developmental challenges. She recently hosted a webinar1 on this topic which I’d strongly recommend. Her key message was that her clients were children who often had a mix of extremes of sensory needs and of avoidances – the high needs were ‘elephant’ sized, and the other extremes were ‘mouse’ sized. For most people we have a mix of our more elephant- vs mouse-sized needs, and the animals are respectively much larger and smaller for some than for others.
Elephant reactions could be positive responses to making or hearing large noises, strong food flavours, flashing lights, rocking and swinging, etc., whereas the mouse reactions could respectively show a startle reaction to or try to drown out strange noises, be a ‘super-taster’ preferring a limited diet, looking away from bright lights,
avoiding and being anxious when touched.
The interesting element in the latter is that for many where light touch has a negative effect, deep pressure can be reassuring and calming.
In last month’s article I mentioned that at the Victoria and Albert Museum there is currently an exhibition called Design and Disability that is open until February 2026 and is well worth visiting. This is both a celebration and a call to action that showcases the radical contributions of Disabled, Deaf, and Neurodivergent people and communities to design history and contemporary culture, from the 1940s to now.
One of the exhibits is a chaise longue sofa with arms which wrap around the sitter, and a pump, controlled by a handheld switch, which fills air into the arms to stretch the arms to engulf the sitter (Figure 1) and provide deep pressure.
A number of postural support devices (PSDs) – belts and harnesses – if applied tightly, not only position the occupant securely, but they can also provide deep pressure benefits. Note that this can also bring us into the debate as to whether we are adding restraints! Restraints are anyway often there for safety benefits for the occupant and those around them.
One example of a PSD which has great positioning benefits but also can provide a reassuring support is the leg harness (Figure 2). This can position each thigh more precisely than a pelvic positioning belt but also can provide a firm and reassuring lower body support.

Well over 30 years ago Jon Prout introduced the BreeziTM range of activity chairs. Apart from their benefit of having height adjustability for use with different height table surfaces and for accommodating the user’s growth, they have come with optional accessories which help to surround the user’s body to make them feel comforted by the broader contact, and this calms many who have behavioural challenges at home or in the classroom. These accessories include padded thigh supports, a padded contour back, and, for added deep pressure around the torso, a broad chest strap (Figure 3). This range is still available today and continues to be enhanced2
None of the Aristotle five senses is actually one sense. Our sense of taste goes beyond just sweet and sour and has sensors that can differentiate 1000 different chemicals – look at how many elements a wine connoisseur can detect in a sip of a specific wine.
The sense of ‘touch’ is also not straightforward in that these are in reality a range of senses: different sensors differentiate our respective senses of pressure, pain, itchiness, hot or cold, etc. These also link in with proprioception, where the feedback from our muscle spindles tells us where parts of our body are positioned in space (providing the means to touch our noses with the end of our fingers, even with our eyes close), so we know what we need to do scratch that itch. When providing equipment, working with responses to touch is important. Many of our foetal reflexes relate to touch. For example, the suckling reflex encourages a baby to turn its head towards the direction in which its cheek is touched.
For most of us, we lose these early reflexes, but for those who have not, we can try to make use of them rather than fight them. When deciding where it might be beneficial to place a support pad, find whether the person responds to touch in that area by leaning into it, or away from it. For a lateral thoracic pad this could lead to the person’s reaction leading to an increased or decreased spinal scoliosis. It also predicts the degree to which the client will be comfortable with an intervention.
If you do find a piece of equipment that works, especially in accommodating behavioural challenges, it is important that the child, for example, has the same equipment at home as at school. The sensory and physical management needs are there all the time, whatever the environment: best results are obtained if the management is consistent. This needs to be addressed in provisions prescribed within SEND assessments.
Was it a specific sensory input that triggered a certain behaviour? If this can be identified, then this can ideally be accommodated for, especially if the
behaviour occurs either to avoid or, conversely, to feel that sensation. Has a behaviour become a learned behaviour, maybe to get attention? Has it reached the point where the response is so established that the perpetrator is doing this automatically? There’s a great deal of careful assessment that is often needed, and it all takes time unfortunately.
Let’s also not forget various senses which we have not gone into in any depth in this article. ‘Gut feelings’ from autonomic nervous system are real. Management of vestibular feedback is a need for many – the reason why people rock their chairs, react negatively or positively to vibrations in their seat, get motion sickness, etc. A large enough topic for another time.
It can take multiple inputs from parents, carers, teachers, therapists. etc to collect all the available knowledge of how any one individual reacts to different situations and different stimuli. Which are the elephants, and which are the mice for that person, and what brings on the reactions? This is the start of the road to managing and balancing the sensory and the physical needs of an individual.
