It was great to hear the news recently that the Wheelchair Alliance, which champions the needs of wheelchair users across England, has launched an All-Party Parliamentary Group to further strengthen their voices at the highest level of Government (p6).
As our Trade Thoughts article reveals (p38), the organisation has worked hard to raise awareness on the law and guidance around weight limits for powered wheelchairs, among other important issues.
Family firm Multicare Medical is hoping its new range of stairlifts will hit the right spot with customers. Best known for its work in supplying hospitals, care homes and public Changing Places toilets, the firm is now bringing its full-service expert approach to independent domestic customers, who can arrange a consultation at its dedicated Midlands showroom (p21).
This issue, THIIS meets Frank Robertson, UK Manager for Merits Health Products (p28). This Taiwan-based mobility solutions provider has been going strong for four decades but only last year introduced its rehab and consumer-powered wheelchairs to the UK market.
In his latest article, Dr Barend ter Haar from BES Healthcare looks at the importance of correctly fitting a wheelchair to the customer (p36).
Don't miss the Retailers' Choice (p10) and Buyers' Guide (p40) features to check out the latest moving and handling products to impress your customers.
If you have any news to share about your retail business, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me. You can also sign up for twice-weekly email updates about the industry via the thiis.co.uk website. Enjoy the issue!

Wondering which moving and handling items are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…
“One of the most trusted patient lifting solutions available is the Invacare Birdie Evo, a thoughtfully designed mobile hoist created to provide safe, dignified transfers for individuals with limited mobility. At Ability Plus, we supply this hoist to both domestic and care environments, where reliability, comfort, and ease of use are key requirements.
“The Birdie Evo and the Birdie Evo Compact are designed to support smooth transfers from beds, chairs, or even the floor. Its clever engineering allows for tool-free folding and unfolding, making them easy to store or transport – an essential feature for care homes, community care settings, and family homes with limited space.
“A standout feature is the hoist’s 360 degree rotation capability, which enables the user to be repositioned with minimal effort, reducing physical strain for carers and improving safety during transfers. Even at its highest extension, the Birdie Evo provides generous space around the user’s head and knees, minimising the feeling of confinement and enhancing comfort.
“From a carer’s perspective, the ergonomic push handles, smooth castors, and easy leg adjustment improve manoeuvrability in tighter spaces. The hoist is equipped with essential safety features, including emergency lowering and stop functions, along with visual and audible battery indicators to prevent unexpected power loss.
“At Ability Plus, we recommend the Birdie Evo for its blend of engineering quality, user comfort, and care-focused design. It remains one of the most effective and dignified patient handling solutions available, suitable for both professional and at-home use.”
Graham Johnson Managing Director at Ability Plus
The Atom Fold is flying off shop floors nationwide – ultra lightweight, compact, and loaded with features that make it a no-brainer for customers and a fast win or your team.
Upgrade the sale with the optional affordable second battery – it tucks neatly into the footwell, doubling the range with zero hassle. No extra storage. Just extra margin. Easy.
“TPG DisableAids has, for many years, been involved in providing lifting and handling solutions for local authorities, housing associations and the NHS.
"As part of that solution package we have been providing not only the equipment, but also the ongoing service and repair facility that they all require.
“This gives us a great insight into the products that have exceptional quality, and therefore longevity, versus those that are possibly less expensive to buy but more expensive to maintain.
“Longevity and cost of ownership over 10 to 15 years always leads us to use the Guldmann GH3 as our ceiling track hoist of choice.
“It has many innovative options and choices which makes the tracking solution a pleasure to work with. A variety of weight options and track spans allow very creative fixing methods that can overcome challenges with ease and speed up installation times.
“The added bonus is, of course, a reliable hoist is exactly what the client needs and demands.”
Alastair Gibbs Managing Director at TPG DisableAids

“When we are asked to supply a transfer aid by a care environment, the one we usually recommend is the MoveAssist from Alerta.
“The MoveAssist is a transfer aid which makes patient transfers quick and easy, requiring minimal assistance, promotes user engagement and enhances their mobility. It has a crossbar that users can hold onto and pull themselves up to a standing position using their own strength.
“The padded split seats open out which allows the user to stand up and board the unit with ease. The care provider then flips the split seats back into place to form a secure and comfortable seat for the user to sit on for the remainder of the transfer. It has adjustable legs which makes it easy to manoeuvre and is ideal for bed, chair, wheelchair and commode transfers.
“It is also ideal for room to room transfers. One of the great features
Laura Hays Director of Thistle Help www.thistle
of this transfer aid is that it can be wheeled directly up to a standard toilet which makes it more dignified for the end user. It comes with rear braked castors and sling hooks for extra safety. It takes a max safe working load of 200kg.
“There are other transfer aids on the market but this one we feel meets all requirements and is reasonably priced which makes it a great option for care environments.”
“This month, we’re highlighting a simple yet essential mobility aid that continues to be a customer favourite – the Transfer Board from Gordon Ellis.
“Designed to assist with safe and smooth transfers from wheelchairs to beds, chairs, or car seats, this board offers a practical solution for individuals with limited mobility, as well as their carers. It’s a product that often flies under the radar, but once discovered, it becomes a musthave for many of our customers –and it’s easy to see why.
“The board is lightweight yet strong, with a gently contoured shape and smooth finish that makes sliding across surfaces easier and more comfortable. Its durability and reliable design give users confidence when transferring, and the handholds make positioning and handling simple for both users and carers.
“From a retail perspective, the Gordon Ellis Transfer Board is a great product to recommend. It’s well made, sensibly priced, and suits a wide range of users. We’ve had consistently positive feedback from customers who’ve said it’s made their daily life significantly easier, particularly for short-term recovery
“We are frequently asked “what is a transfer board”? We explain that a transfer board is an aid which helps the user transfer from one surface to another – just like a bridge! Ideal for transferring from a wheelchair to a bed, toilet or static chair, they are one of the most popular products we sell and are ideal for those with limited leg movement or general mobility/standing problems.
“Being able to stay seated, allows the user, often independently, to transfer from one location to another in a safe and secure manner. The question which usually follows is “what is the
Karen Sheppard Managing Director of People First Mobility peoplefirst
best transfer board”?
“We sell hundreds of transfer boards each year and our favourite has to be the Bamberry range of bamboo transfer boards made by Gordon Ellis.
“Why? Well, they are great quality, all made from hard bamboo, ensuring that they carry up to a 30-stone weight. Their smooth finish is waterproof and allows for an easy slide motion to allow the user a secure transfer with or without assistance.
“The Bamberry range comes in three different styles – straight – either short (24 inches) or long (30 inches) and a curved style too which is ideal when
transferring from a chair with arms to a wheelchair as the curved end wraps around the arm of the chair helping to stabilise the transfer.
“Product support for this product is one of Gordon Ellis’ strong points with their staff always on hand to answer any customer queries.”
Julia Phipps Director of The
Ability Superstore www.ability superstore.com
“The Homecraft Adjustable Stacking Commode stands out as a bestseller thanks to its affordable price point and practical design, making it a top choice for individuals needing reliable toileting support at home or in care settings.
“Its sturdy metal frame provides solid support, with height-adjustable legs that can be easily modified using pin clips, accommodating users of varying heights. The seat height ranges from 480mm to 580mm.
“The commode is equipped with a black hinged toilet seat over a five-litre plastic commode pan, which is easy to
remove for cleaning. A padded, vinylcovered lift-off seat and integral back pad enhance comfort during use.
“With a maximum user weight capacity of 165kg this commode is both robust and reliable.
“A particularly useful feature of this model is its stackability, allowing multiple units to be stored efficiently when not in use. This makes it ideal for both domestic settings and facilities that may need to store several units at once.
"The commode also comes with a removable pan, making waste disposal discreet and straightforward.”
Every day, businesses strive to attract new customers. They spend thousands on ads, sales calls, and special offers – trying to win over people who’ve never heard of them. But what about the people who already trust you?
Those who have purchased from you before have told their friends and continued to come back.
Existing customers are the quiet engine behind your success. They’re loyal, they believe in your service, and, if asked the right way, they’ll share stories that attract new buyers far better than any advert ever could.
Cold facts list features. Customer stories share feelings. People buy with emotion and then justify with logic.
A good story helps a potential buyer see themselves in your customer's shoes. That connection is powerful as it builds trust and credibility and removes doubt.
So ask yourself: What stories could your customers tell? What challenges did they overcome? How did your product or service make their life easier, safer, or better?
These aren't just nice-to-haves. They're marketing gold. Most businesses lean on review sites like Google or Trustpilot and stop there. Why? Because getting even one review
feels like pulling teeth. But here's the truth: It's not that customers don't want to share—it's that we're asking the wrong questions.
Here's what not to say: "Please leave us a review." You'll get: "Great service. Five stars." Useful? Maybe. Memorable? Not really. Instead, ask questions that dig deeper and invite a story. These prompt reflection and bring your customer’s journey to life. Questions you could ask could be: What challenges did you face before finding us? What made you hesitate before buying? How did our service or product help you? What was your experience like working with us? Would you recommend us? If so, why?
Once you start collecting stories, don’t let them sit in a folder. You can start by adding stories to your website’s homepage, product pages, and FAQs.
On social media you can post short quotes with eye-catching images or short video clips.
You can conduct an email campaign featuring a real-life case study or customer spotlight. You can use stories to overcome objections or highlight value and you can turn before-andafter examples into showroom displays or brochures. The more visible and relatable these stories are, the more effective they are.
✓ Create 3–5 story-driven questions to ask every customer
✓ Add these to your email follow-up, forms, or post-sale scripts
✓ Train staff to prompt stories during natural customer conversations
✓ Collect photos or videos (with permission) to enhance storytelling
✓ Share stories regularly on your site, socials, and in your sales materials
✓ Review and refresh your stories monthly—keep them current and relevant
If you’re not collecting reviews yet, start now. If you are, look at changing how you ask. Try to build a review collection into your sales process. You can do this by sending an automated email post-sale with three story-based questions. Have staff ask the questions on a follow-up call and incentivise participation with a spotlight feature. Systemising this step means you consistently receive stories, regardless of how busy the team is or how tight the marketing budget becomes.
THERE’S NO PERFECT TIME!
Don’t wait for the “right” moment to start collecting stories. Try and start today with your next customer. The sooner you begin, the faster your story bank will grow – and so will your business. When new customers hear real stories from real people, they don’t just listen; they engage, and they believe.

Multicare Medical is marking a significant step in the consumer home access market...
Multicare Medical, a specialist provider of patient handling and care equipment since 1988, has officially launched a new range of British-made stairlifts, marking a significant step into the consumer home access market.
Best known for its work in supplying ceiling hoists, assisted baths, beds and pressure care solutions for hospitals, care homes, education, and a range of domestic care settings, Multicare Medical is looking to bring its full-service expert approach to independent domestic customers.
Samuel Wheatcroft, CEO at Multicare Medical, has been working for the firm for just over 22 years. Samuel
comments: “As the managing director at Multicare I am responsible for sales and marketing and project delivery. I work closely with OT's , architects, contractors and physios to deliver safe patient handling solutions.”
Leicestershire-based Multicare Medical has recently partnered with Platinum Stairlifts to supply its range of UK designed and manufactured stairlifts. Multicare Medical has promised that each installation will be delivered to customers by its own engineers, who will also take care of servicing, with no subcontractors involved to ensure
complete quality control and continuity of care throughout the process.
The new range includes stairlifts for straight, curved, and even more complex staircases, with easy-to-use controls and compact designs that offer a smooth and quiet ride, fold
“We’ve always taken pride in being a company that genuinely cares”
away neatly when not in use, and make everyday life at home safer and easier.
Its stairlifts offer a first-step-start for simple installation and reduced cost, as well as forward-facing travel to improve comfort and safety. There’s also an option to monitor stairlift use and send alerts to loved ones of any potential issues such as faults, warnings, or if the lift hasn’t been used for a while.
Multicare Medical’s launch is underpinned by its ‘extra step promise’, which they say is a clear customer commitment that they will get the right stairlift, at a fair price for customers, and explains what happens if these expectations aren’t met. The promise reflects the company’s belief in doing more than just selling equipment but truly enabling safe access to familiar spaces.
Samuel adds: “The launch of our stairlift range is a natural progression, giving families a reliable, expert-led alternative in a space that’s often sadly dominated by hard sales, making money, and limited service. We’re also proud to back up our offering with a promise that we will deliver above and beyond any other stairlift provider.”
The launch is part of the firm’s ongoing mission to improve safety, dignity, and independence for people with disabilities and mobility challenges, in addition to complex care environments, to support everyday life at home.
Multicare Medical also works with firms to install accessible public Changing Places toilets, accessible facilities for disabled people to use. These facilities typically include features such as a ceiling hoist, heightadjustable changing couch, wash basin and amergency alarm cord.
Multicare Medical’s team of consultants can advise on room layout and assist with equipment specification
as well as a full installation service, installing every piece of equipment required to ensure the facility is compliant and can be registered on the official Changing Places website. Selecting specialist equipment that it suitable for multiple or individual users is an important decision, whether the customer is purchasing for a care home, hospital, school, or a domestic setting.
To help with equipment selection and give customers an opportunity to try out the equipment it provides, Multicare Medical has a showroom at its centrally located head office in Hinckley, Leicestershire.
The showroom provides a hands-on opportunity for customers – as well as

Focused on products which enhance the life of their users since 1986, Merits Health Products introduced its mobility solution range to the UK in 2024…
Merits Health Products has been providing a range of mobility solutions for nearly four decades. The company manufactures a wide range of products including manual wheelchairs, powered wheelchairs, rehab power wheelchairs, scooters, and seating and positioning products. THIIS chats to Frank Robertson, UK Manager of Merits Health Products UK.
CAN YOU PROVIDE A BIT OF A BACKGROUND ABOUT MERITS HEALTH PRODUCTS?
“Merits was founded in Taiwan in 1986 when our founder, Larry Cheng, designed and manufactured a manual wheelchair for his mother’s specific requirements as he could not find a suitable wheelchair for her on the market in Taiwan at that time.
“The company has grown to become the fifth largest mobility manufacturer in the world”
life through mobility’. This is the driving factor in all our current and future products that they should be able to enhance the life of their users.
“Since that time the company has expanded into powered wheelchairs, mobility scooters, stairlifts, seating and positioning, contract manufacture of mobility products and components for other leading brands. The company has grown to become the fifth largest mobility manufacturer in the world.”
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT MERITS HEALTH PRODUCTS, AND WHAT HAD BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE INDUSTRY BEFORE?
“I am the UK Manager for Merits Health Products UK, and it’s my role to establish Merits brand products including the Avid range of rehab wheelchairs and the Merits range of consumer powered wheelchairs and grow the business by meeting the needs of our customers.
“I started working for Merits in April 2023, and we launched the UK business in April 2024. Prior to that I worked for the charities Whizz Kidz and Duchenne UK where I led the Dream Wheelchair Project.
growth in the UK we are in the process of establishing a distribution
funded by the Peoples Post Lottery to research, design and build an innovative and technically advanced prototype wheelchair for young people.”
WHAT HAS BEEN A STANDOUT MOMENT AT THE FIRM FOR YOU?
“Recently we were appointed to the NHS framework for the supply of adult powered wheelchairs. This is a tremendous opportunity to work with the NHS providing them a high-quality product and a premium service level.”
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE NUMBER ONE BEST SELLING PRODUCT?
“Merits' best-selling product globally is the P326e Vision Sport. This is the latest iteration of a wheelchair which continues to be popular with customers. It’s a compact indoors/ outdoors mid-wheel drive chair with a 508mm turning radius, a weight capacity of 136kg, robust independent suspension and 10” solid drive tires for superior traction and a great drive.
“For comfort the wheelchair is fitted with a semi-reclining 135 degrees
ergonomic seat available in 16” to 20” seat widths and a customisable seat depth of 16” to 20”. Its compact size and low weight also make it an ideal choice for wheelchair users with a boot hoist.”
WHAT IS THE LATEST PRODUCT TO JOIN THE MERITS HEALTH PRODUCTS RANGE?
“Attracting a lot of interest right now is the Avid Rehab Axcel Narrow Wheelchair which won the 2024 Mobility Management Award in the USA. At only 570mm wide it’s a true compact narrow front-wheeldrive wheelchair with tremendous capability and impeccable build quality optimised for use in the UK and Europe.”
CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED?
“Our products are distributed globally from our facilities in Taiwan, China, Vietnam and the USA. To support our growth in the UK we are in the process of establishing a distribution hub in Birmingham.
“The hub will also be able to configure special order rehab wheelchairs and provide spares and

WHAT DO YOU OFFER IN TERMS OF MARKETING SUPPORT FOR DEALERS?
“Our UK website www.meritshealth.uk has a resource centre that provides all sales flyers, order forms and manuals for the Avid Range and is constantly being updated.
“This lets dealers and users print what they want when they need it or to provide their customers with links to the information online. The website also has our online trouble shooting guide that provides online help and assistance with any technical questions dealers or wheelchair users may have. We also provide point-of-sale banners and displays on request.”
HOW CAN MOBILITY RETAILERS INTERESTED IN STOCKING YOUR PRODUCTS GET IN TOUCH OR ARRANGE A DEMO?
“We are ambitious, and we want to provide a service across the whole of the UK and would welcome enquiries from all dealers.
“We would love to hear from any dealers interested in finding out what Merits has to offer, including more information on our products and arranging demonstrations. We can be contacted at Sales@Meritshealth.uk or by phone on 07443 876057.”
CAN YOU DESCRIBE ANY PRODUCTS IN DEVELOPMENT AT THE MOMENT?
“I can’t say too much about the products we have in development, but we expect to launch two new
wheelchairs and introduce our Precision Comfort range of postural seating solutions at Rehacare in September.”
WHAT DO YOU SEE AS A PARTICULAR ISSUE AFFECTING THE MOBILITY SECTOR AT THE MOMENT?
“I think we see the same issues as everyone else and that would be funding for wheelchairs and affordability. We know that the NHS budgets are under constant pressure from central government, and there are also the new changes to PIP being implemented in
November 2026 that could impact up to 800,000 people in the UK by either reducing or removing their benefits.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MERITS HEALTH PRODUCTS OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?
“Merits' focus in the next 12 months is to establish our UK hub, continue to grow our dealer network and support the NHS. Our next major exhibition will be Rehacare in Dusseldorf from the 17-20 September where you can find us in Hall 6 stand number A52, and we would invite anyone from the UK visiting the show to come and meet us.”

When someone slips down in their seat or chair, why do they do it? Is it a bad thing? Why do we try to stop it?
As children we were probably at meals, or even school, told to sit still and sit up straight! Why were we told this? For meals it’s a practical thing in that we are less likely to spill food down our fronts. At school, it can indicate the pupil is alert, interested, and paying attention: however, because of the muscles involved in sitting up, this can involve more energy than if slumped in our seat. Slumped shoulders can also give an indication of a person’s psychological state. However, when we want to relax and overcome postural fatigue, most of us go into a posterior pelvic tilt, and let our backs sink into the back of our seating. Why might this be a bad thing? We all want to relax at some time during the day, surely?
This is a bad thing if we are unable to change our position for ourselves to get back to an alternative position. This is a bad thing if it means that, as a result of slipping down, our secondary support devices risk strangulating us. This is a bad thing if the accompanying friction around the buttocks, and the shear stresses and strains involved, risk damage to skin tissue. This is a bad thing if it leads to the longer term development of a kyphotic curvature of the spine. This is a bad thing if the kyphotic posture means that it is hard to see in front of us without having to hyperextend the neck. It is a bad thing if the kyphotic posture leads to drooling. This may also be a bad thing if the result is that your head ends up being lower than it could be, thereby limiting your ability to look over an obstacle, or look someone in the eye.
Surprisingly, a common cause of our posterior pelvic tilt can be the position of
our feet! Many people, in care homes for example, are left in transit wheelchairs for much of the day. These chairs often have their foot supports positioned well in front of the chair casters to avoid the foot supports interfering with the casters’ movement. Unfortunately, many of these occupants also have shortened hamstrings. These hamstrings that attach to the top of the lower leg at one end, attach to the base of the pelvis at the other. The consequence of having the feet pushed out in front of the chair is that the lower leg is stretched forward, and this in turn pulls, via the shortened hamstring, on the pelvis, pulling the occupant’s pelvis forward, and at the same time rotating the pelvis into a posterior tilt.
If the chair’s seat depth is too long, this too can lead to the pelvis not being able to connect with the back support, and the occupant slips into a posterior pelvic tilt and with a kyphotic spine to accommodate this space.
From another angle, a set or fixed kyphotic curvature of the spine is
usually associated with a compensatory posterior pelvic tilt. And as indicated above, the consequent posterior tilt can lead to sliding out of the seat.
Let’s start by fitting the chair correctly to the occupant and their range of movement. Make sure the effective seat depth is no greater than the occupant’s thigh length. Make sure that the foot supports on the chair are positioned sufficiently far back so that the occupant’s hamstrings are not forced to pull the occupant’s pelvis forward. If we were to treat the pelvis as if it were a ball, and that you wanted to stop it from rotating and rolling away (since this is in effect what is happening), what would be the best means to achieve this? First, to stop it rolling backwards, place a block high up behind it: in effect behind the posterior superior iliac spines (PSIS) (4 and 6 in Fig. 1). Then to stop the ‘ball’ rolling forward, have a preischial ridge in the seat cushion (2 in Fig.
1), just in front of the ischial tuberosities (ITs) (5 in Fig. 1). Note that this ridge does not need to be more than 5 mm in depth – anything more risks increasing anterior pressures on the ITs.
On the principle of three points of control, a pelvic positioning belt positioned across the thighs will assist further to keep the pelvis in place (Fig. 2).
An alternative can be leg harnesses (Fig. 3), which have the further advantage of giving separate control to either side of the pelvis. In contrast, the use of knee blocks to achieve this aim is generally deprecated due to the forces on the hip joint that these can induce.
Other aspects of the seat cushion can also have effects. Consider a cover material that can be ‘grippy’, especially under the thighs (though this does need to be balanced against the additional shear stresses and strains this can bring to the skin tissues, especially under the
buttocks). Other aspects of the mix of materials internal to the cushion design, in addition to the pre-ischial ridge, can provide additional lateral and posterior supports, giving the benefit of helping position the pelvis more securely (for an example, see Fig. 4).
While considering the cushion, a wedge placed under the cushion under the thighs has been shown to be effective at redistributing pressures away from the buttocks, while still allowing the foot supports on the wheelchair to be positioned at a suitable height from the floor (3 in Fig. 1).
We have linked a kyphotic posture of the back with a posterior pelvic tilt. Where the kyphosis has become ‘fixed’, this can be accommodated to some extent by opening up the angle of the back support. Remember that, for a standard back support (without biangular or multiangular aspects to its design), the bottom of the back support is ideally placed as a PSIS block to control the tendency towards a posterior pelvic tilt as much as is feasible (and comfortable), but still allows the back support to be angled back to accommodate the needs of the thoracic region of the occupant’s torso, be it the kyphotic region of the spine, or the shoulder blades.
If a variable recline position is offered as part of the wheelchair design, please do make sure that the recline pivot point is level with the occupant’s hip joint (for example, as in the EPiC seating system – Fig. 5), rather than pivoting below this at the back support-seat base junction. Meeting this requirement again allows the pelvis to remain in a neutral position,
while allowing the postural variation of reclining the back support for relaxation, for example, and without creating shear forces along the occupant’s back.
To help the seated occupant from slipping down in their seat, it’s best to help them to maintain as neutral (i.e. vertical) a pelvic position as possible. This can be achieved by a mix of wheelchair set-up from the feet, through the seat base, to the back support. Alongside this, the placement, design, and materials, of the seat cushion and other postural supports will be important.

Should mobility manufacturers do more to make powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters that meet Class 2 and Class 3 width, length and weight limit requirements?
“Here at the Wheelchair Alliance we have been working hard to raise awareness on the current law and guidance around weight limits for powered wheelchairs that can impact a user’s ability to carry out everyday tasks such as going to school, work or socialise.
“But meeting Government requirements is not down to wheelchair manufacturers alone. As part of our collaborative efforts, we continue to work with manufacturers, Government, the NHS and wheelchair users to find a way forward that will help ensure that there is clear information available to wheelchair users regarding the weight
of their wheelchair, and ultimately seek for this law to be changed, and at the very least an exemption for wheelchair users.
"What remains important is that the voices of wheelchair users are not ignored and we will continue to advocate their needs.”
www.wheelchair-alliance.co.uk
“The wheelchair market is global, not just based in the UK. With regulations varying from country to country I believe that manufacturers should be able to focus on creating safe, stable, reliable and functional solutions for wheelchair users – not stifling innovation.
“As technology advances, governments should look to adjust outdated regulations to ensure that they meet wheelchair user demands and are fit for purpose.
"Ensuring solutions such as powerchairs are under 150kg would inhibit functionality and independence for users and affect stability.”
www.beyondmobility.co.uk
“The Class 3 government guidelines were set to provide a level of safety needed for the highway.
“Most of these are logical and essential, for example mirrors, additional handbrakes, indicators, horn
“Rather sadly I believe that the UK manufacturers are probably doing as much as they can to keep their products within the guidelines of Classes 1, 2 and 3.
However, they are fighting against an overwhelming tide of equipment made for other parts of the world that is not scrutinised in the same way when it is imported.
“Not all importers are BHTA members and see little relevance in joining an organisation that will try to make them comply with any rules.

and hazards. However there will always be some aspects that are open to debate. For example, is 8mph the safest speed for road use, or should it be increased in line with many European countries? There’s probably no right or wrong answer.
“Should the scooter be limited in width, length or weight? Whilst a limit in all these areas does need to be set, is 850mm enough in the width, or should this increase? Does the 150kg (or 200kg) product weight limit provide
"Indeed, I came across a ‘mobility scooter’ imported by one of the high street retailers just the other day that was downright dangerous. But because it had UKCA applied for on the label, I presume they thought it was okay to retail it.
“More of a concern is that the relevant stakeholders in the confirmation of the rules seem unlikely to sit around the same table to sort out the problem.
"The DVLA, Department of Transport, HMRC, Driving Mobility, BHTA, Wheelchair Alliance, Whizz Kids, etc all have a valuable contribution to a constructive dialogue.”
enough scope for bespoke items designed for specific requirements?
“We feel the key thing is that manufacturers behave responsibility, and ensure they follow the UK requirements. There is definitely a risk of inferior quality products coming in from China that don’t meet any legal or safety requirements that are a potential danger to users.”
