Wheelchair buggy wins design comp

A round-up of the key trade stories for business leaders to digest

A state-of-the-art wheelchair buggy, designed to affix to wheelchairs and help parents safely transport their children, has won Bolt Burdon Kemp’s Design the Change competition. The competition, now in its third year, helps to raise awareness of the challenges facing people with spinal cord injuries with UK-based university students invited to design a product aimed at improving their lives.

Law firm Bolt Burdon Kemp, which supports people with spinal cord injuries, was looking for a design which was both unique and practical.

Winner Tom Baker, 23, a third-year product design student from Sheffield Hallam University, designed the wheelchair buggy which comprises of a lightweight collapsible frame, offering wheelchair users independent and secure travel with young children, utilising existing wheelchair and infant seat fixings for universal use with non-adapted products.

Tom’s research revealed that many wheelchair users rig up DIY contraptions so they can push conventional pushchairs. Tom wins £3,000, with an additional £2,000 being awarded to Sheffield Hallam University.

HANDICARE’S CUSTOMER SERVICE WIN Stairlift provider Handicare has earned the Platinum Feefo Trusted Service Award for Companion Stairlifts and its partner Age Co, the commercial mobility brand of Age UK. The quick turnaround can be fulfilled, it comments, as most of its products are fully stocked, and it does not operate on a ‘build to order’ basis. Sheffield-based Jenx has been manufacturing life-changing equipment for disabled children for more than 40 years, while New York-based Rifton has been manufacturing adaptive equipment since 1977. Jenx and Rifton formed a partnership 18 years ago with Jiraffe being the sole UK supplier of Rifton products.

Wearable tech that helps reduce falls

With one in two over-80s expected to have a fall this year, personal alarm provider TakingCare is calling for a much-needed shift from reactive to preventative care.

The firm has partnered with a consortium of businesses to set up a £1.3m falls prevention programme, which employs health education, digital technology and artificial intelligence to revolutionise the use of wearable technology-enabled care.

Software developer Technicare has developed an intelligent algorithm, which uses insights from a Fitbit, worn by the user, to detect a benchmark for “normal patterns” of activity, based on daily steps and movement. Through ongoing monitoring, AI technology identifies changes or anomalies in a wearer’s behaviour or activity level that could indicate they may be at an increased risk of a fall.

TakingCare responds to this work by providing a personalised response service, with its prevention team monitoring user data to detect instances where direct personal interaction with wearers may be required. The results from a pilot of this programme have shown how intervention improved participants’ quality of life by 11 per cent.

Accessibility boost for historical attraction

Mobility retailer Clark & Partners has donated two mobility scooters to give disabled and elderly visitors greater freedom to explore at Wentworth Woodhouse stately home in South Yorkshire. Available to hire for free, the battery-powered One Rehab scooters can cover up to 16 miles and can cope with stone and wooden floors on the Grade I listed Rotherham mansion’s ground floor, plus gravel paths and lawns in the grounds.

The Handsworth-headquartered mobility specialist decided to donate the scooters after touring the house and learning about the trust’s determination to become one of the most inclusive and accessible visitor destinations in the country.

Debbie Ashton, Sales and Marketing Director, explained: “Wentworth Woodhouse’s objectives are in line with our ethos of helping people with disabilities, and mobility issues in older age, to keep their freedom, confidence and independence. We realised how difficult it must be for someone who relies on a scooter to get around the house and gardens and decided to donate two vehicles.”

MOBILITY SCOOTERS ONLINE MARKETPLACE

Online platform mobilityscooters.co.uk has launched in the UK with an aim to offer a safe, reliable platform for mobility scooter dealerships, as well as private sellers, to buy and sell new and used mobility scooters and accessories to customers on a local and national basis. Devised by Nottingham-based brothers Daniel, Joe, Ben and Tim Isterling, the website is designed to bridge two significant gaps within the mobility market, improving access to quality mobility scooters for users, while enabling dealerships to expand their network of customers across the country and sell their scooters more effectively.

“Our retailer's choice recommendation would be the fantastic range of high-quality products from Guldmann.

“For the mainly domestic applications we would use the Guldmann GH1 (pictured), which comes in several forms, including with portable and quick release features, to be as flexible as possible in a residential location.

“We then step up to the GH3 for use in more complex scenarios where additional features and options may be required in institutional situations.

“Having the ability to recharge at any location on the track, even on room covering, or x-y systems can be a real benefit if carers forget to return it to a specific charge station.

“Additionally, the high-quality accessories and fixing solutions make it an incredibly competent package that will fit just about any location.

“The ease of use for the care giver and the extreme reliability make it a real ‘go-to’ product in our range.

“The design features have always placed equal importance to the three distinct groups. The disabled person, the care giver and the service engineer have all been considered to produce a great range of products that 'give time to care'.

“Weight capacity ranges up to 500kg with clear spans of up to 8m, as well as choices of colour finish really do make this a premium product.”

Keeping customers safe on the roads

Driving Mobility, supported by the Department for Transport, officially introduced its Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter Retailer Training Scheme to business owners and stakeholders in Westminster recently...

Supported by The Department for Transport (DfT), Driving Mobility recently held a launch event at the House of Lords in London’s Westminster introducing new training for staff at mobility scooter and powered wheelchair showrooms so that more customers can buy products that they can drive safely.

In partnership with the DfT, Driving Mobility is a national charity which accredits a network of 21 driving assessment centres covering the whole of the UK. After becoming aware that the way people

were travelling was changing with increased ownership of mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs, Driving Mobility set about trialling a scheme that would assist retailers in ensuring they are matching vehicles with customer capabilities and advising on the Highway Code.

The voluntary Powered Wheelchair and Mobility Scooter (PWMS)

Retailer Training scheme introduces a consistent and improved approach to providing mobility scooters and powerchairs in the UK. It aims to improve how retailers assess the

needs and capabilities of customers so that the most appropriate products are supplied.

The training is to be provided by clinicians from Driving Mobility who will provide clinical knowledge to enhance the expertise of manufacturers. By offering guidance on The Highway Code and safe driving techniques, the scheme aims to improve road safety for scooter owners, as well as pedestrians and other road users.

Once trained, suppliers will be officially accredited by the Department for Transport and Driving Mobility. Consumers will then be able to pick retailers

standardised way to assess the needs of mobility scooter and powerchair customers or provide safe driving guidance. In addition, there continues to be several grey areas of understanding when it comes to the law regarding mobility vehicle use on the highway.

Safe driver training has also been inconsistent across the UK, whereas if retailers sign up to the new scheme, they will be able to apply expertise from Driving Mobility’s occupational therapists.

Driving Mobility Centres work with the DVLA, Motability, NHS and the police to offer ‘fitness to drive’, equipment and accessible travel assessments for people with restricted mobility.

Qualified healthcare professionals at several centres will be providing the PWMS training so retail staff can benefit from a better understanding of customer medical conditions and capabilities now and in the future.

With this knowledge the scheme aims to ensure that the right vehicle is supplied to the right person, so competent and considerate driving is possible. Add to this the latest, easy-to-remember road safety advice, drivers should benefit from a more positive ownership experience whilst protecting other highway users.

The event at Westminster was all the more timely following a successful pilot over the last year, which further underlined the pressing need for a retailer training scheme.

ESTEEMED GUESTS

Held in the Cholmondeley Room at the House of Lords, the event represented a platform to formally launch the scheme to mobility product retailers, manufacturers and influencers across the industry.

The formal proceedings were opened by Baroness Grey-Thompson who welcomed the 100 guests filling the room. Afternoon tea was served, and then Driving Mobility’s CEO Edward Trewhella gave the centrepiece speech describing Driving Mobility, the story as to how the scheme was conceived, the pilot project and the main roll-out of the training across the country.

Margot Shatz, Deputy Director of Accessible and Inclusive Travel at the Department for Transport, gave a short speech confirming the UK Government’s commitment and support for the project, as well as reaffirming its pride in the long-term, immensely productive, and beneficial relationship with Driving Mobility and reiterating the importance of the new training scheme.

Driving Mobility’s partners in the project were in attendance, including David Stockdale, CEO of British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA), Ray Hodgkinson (formerly Director General of the BHTA) and Barry le Grys, CEO at Motability.

Responses were very positive from attendees. Helen Dolphin MBE, remarked: “For a disabled person, knowing you are going to a retailer who is going to help you choose and buy a product which is most

suitable for you is so important. There have been too many accidents where disabled people are using equipment that is totally unsuitable. This accreditation will help disabled people in finding an appropriate retailer who will take the time to find out about what they need so they can be safe and confident using their scooter.”

Improved road safety is the key objective of the PWMS scheme. Attendee Rob Heard, Road Safety and Older Drivers Consultant, commented on his belief that safe mobility is essential for all, whether in a vehicle or on a mobility scooter. He said: “As a retired Roads Police Officer, I fully appreciate how if we do not have the right equipment for our needs or training to operate that equipment, we can not only put ourselves at risk, but others. This training scheme will help retailers assist their clients with the correct and suitable equipment for their individual needs and in doing so help keep those most vulnerable safer and supported.”

Isaac Harvey MBE, voted one of the most influential people in the UK with a disability on the Power 100 list, commented: “It was just great to be in a space around other change makers and seeing this initiative launched for retailers of mobility equipment to better inform those in choosing the right product that will be safe and suitable for their individual needs.”

CALLING ALL RETAILERS

The event included representatives from some of the UK’s mobility equipment suppliers, who wanted to show their support for the scheme and urge retailers to get behind it.

Daniel Stone, Managing Director of TGA Mobility, said: “All retailers need to embrace this training and take responsibility for how they sell products. It is an opportunity that could make a real difference and even though our methods have been finely tuned over four decades, we are always open to improvements, hence we will be adopting the scheme.”

Thanking Edward Trewhella and the team at Driving Mobility for an excellent launch event, Elaine Leighton, Head of Brand & Charity Partnerships at Electric Mobility,

added: “Mobility dealers and retailers across the UK have the opportunity to improve their assessment skills and knowledge by attending the free course, which will benefit their staff and company overall with improved productivity and adherence to quality standards.

“Investing in training isn’t just important, it is vital in our industry and this course has the support and accreditation of the DfT, which will boost the consumers’ confidence about the retailer and their ability and reputation to purchase from.”

Meanwhile, Tim Ross, National Sales Manager for eFOLDi, added: “As a responsible manufacturer, we believe it’s vitally important that retailers get behind the scheme, given the advantages it offers, not just to consumers but all businesses within the industry. Raising standards, as well as maintaining credibility and trust, is of paramount importance for us all. We fully support this new initiative, and we would encourage retailers to do the same.”

Retailers who had come from as far as Inverness in the north and Brighton in the south were enthused by the scheme too.

Carol Elliot, Managing Director of City Mobility, a retailer serving the north and north east of Scotland, stated that she found the event useful for networking and meeting lots of knowledgeable people in the industry. She said: “I’m really looking forward to the next stage of this piece of work to implement the course. I’ve got all the relevant staff registered for it to go on as soon as it comes to Scotland.”

Alastair Gibbs, Managing Director of Hereford-based TPG DisableAids, said that he was pleased to have been instrumental in bringing the scheme together and securing assistance from the Department for Transport. He added: “It would be nice to think that in the future a buyer of a mobility device would expect to be assessed and trained as a matter of course.”

He feels that for some time there has been concern within the industry that the users of mobility products are often not trained in their safe use, and, as a consequence, other road and pavement users, as well as themselves, are put at risk of accident

or injury. Alastair continued: “This new programme aims to go some way in addressing this concern. Having a product that is appropriate to the user's needs and knowing how to use it safely will result in far better user satisfaction as well as improved safety.

“Whilst this assessment and training has been delivered by many British Healthcare Trades Association (BHTA) members for many years, it has often been independently devised and follows no particular standard or format. The new program from Driving Mobility aims to address that by creating a uniform approach that covers all of the required elements.”

England, commented: “Scooter safety has been an important issue for the industry for many years and striking a balance between the freedom gained by users with the potential harm to pedestrians is very difficult. We welcome this initiative and can see the experienced team behind it will be able make a real difference in this important area.”

Tonya Page, Stairlift and Customer Relations Director at Ableworld, said that the event offered a lovely opportunity to listen to the speakers about the scheme and talk to others in the industry, remarking: “As a business we are very keen to engage with PWMS as we feel this will be a real benefit to our company, our colleagues and our customers.”

TRAINING PROVIDERS

With Driving Mobility centres set to provide the training and official accreditation for the scheme, senior representatives from several of these centres attended the House of Lords to explain in more detail their role in delivering the education programme.

Amy Leddington, Head of Marketing and Business Operations at the Regional Driving Assessment Centre (RDAC), discussed how her organisation is about giving people the freedom to move as drivers or passengers. She said: “As well as conducting powered wheelchair and mobility scooter assessments with clients, we now also offer training to retailers through this fantastic initiative. Together we are helping even more people to stay mobile, independent, and safe.”

Herts Ability, a Driving Mobility Centre in Welwyn Garden City, is also a PWMS provider. Its CEO, Sean Lawrence said that Herts Ability was excited to deliver training for local retailers later this year, with its team of occupational therapists giving retail staff the knowledge and confidence to sell the correct equipment to their customers and to ensure their safety.

Sean added: “We hope this training will reduce casualties and fatalities in the future, as the sale of such equipment is largely unregulated. As this scheme is free of charge, we hope that retailers take advantage of this

opportunity to upskill their staff.”

Richard Breedon, Retail Manager at the charity Cornwall Mobility, which was instrumental in working with Driving Mobility to create the PWMS training scheme, commented that his organisation prided itself on its duty of care to customers, and the fact that it always listens to its clients and ensures that its products suit their needs.

Richard commented: “By providing the powered wheelchair and mobility scooter retailer training we can help to share those values and ensure greater consumer protection and peace of mind.

“We believe it is vitally important that the correct information, advice, and practical instruction is provided at all times. Many consumers are vulnerable and don’t know who to trust when wishing to purchase mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs.

“We therefore passionately believe that all mobility retailers will benefit from this training, which will provide unbiased guidance and ultimately improve road safety for all consumers."

David Blythe, General Manager of William Merritt Independent Living Centre, which provides impartial advice for children and adults living with a disability or long-term condition, said: “The William Merritt Centre (WMC) will be involved with the PWMS project to further support our service users in making an important purchase that will enhance their independent mobility.

“Too often people would purchase mobility scooter that are not suitable for them or they are unable or aware of how to look after them, resulting in wasted resources and the client unable to improve their mobility.

“The WMC has been providing scooter assessments for over 20 years and this new project allows us to work with retailers as important partners to ensure clients identify and purchase the correct equipment for their needs, making sure they and the general public remain as safe as possible."

As the event drew to a close, the guests spent the remainder of the event mingling and chatting on the terrace, enjoying the view over Westminster Bridge and beyond, and reflecting on an enjoyable event to launch the new PWMS scheme.

Richard Holden, Roads and Accessibility Minister, states that it’s really important to improve road safety for everyone, including owners of powered wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

He concluded: “This scheme, supported by Government, will help to ensure that people with restricted mobility can get around independently and confidently by training users, and I’m pleased to support it through our funding.”

It is a somewhat fresh take on the manual stand assist, with a fresh blend of design and interaction points.

“The single upright mast and unique component geometry allows for an enclosed footplate, removing any risk of a person’s feet conflicting with moving parts. A multi-point push handle offers the caregiver a choice of hand hold positions for best posture and comfort.

“The Oxford Up can also be disassembled in 30 seconds to aid transportation, and importantly for our retailer network, shipping costs and storage challenges are very much allayed.”

“In order to support aftersales and lasting customer relationships, we also provide one of the industry’s most respected Mobile Hoist Inspection and Maintenance courses, covering the requirements of LOLER (Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations).

“Aimed predominantly at the service engineer, this course covers in depth understanding in relation to the inspection of Oxford products and how to ensure and maintain a safer lifting environment for all.”

IS JOERNS HEALTHCARE PLANNING ON IMPLEMENTING ANY MORE INITIATIVES TO IMPROVE THE SERVICES IT OFFERS ITS RETAILER PARTNERS?

“At Joerns, we already offer a wide range of resources to help our retailers promote our products successfully. We can provide marketing support to help run mutual promotional campaigns and have an online resource centre that contains downloadable product support materials, including full image library, user guides, marketing

copy, technical documentation, video content and more!

“Our comprehensive website also provides extensive product information as well as a blog section, offering a broad knowledge base for a range of industry topics and challenges. Online content is continuously reviewed and optimised, and by implementing related digital strategies, we endeavour to generate sales enquiries that we can pass on to our retailer network. In fact, we have recently added a Dealer Locator tool where visitors can search for their local authorised service provider in order to source Oxford lift and sling products more readily.”

HOW HAS JOERNS HEALTHCARE MANAGED TO NAVIGATE THE CHALLENGE OF RISING SUPPLY CHAIN COSTS AND DELAYS?

“As we all know too well, the Covid-19 pandemic generated a number of ‘knock-on’ challenges to businesses. Early on, we took diligent steps that helped ensure continued and largely uninterrupted supply to our customer base, quickly boosting stock levels in anticipation of future struggles with component supply. Inevitably, nobody has escaped what have been quite

dramatic cost increases.

“As a result of elevated stock levels, we were able to maintain our price point for longer, though naturally, this was somewhat of a stay of execution.

“We, like others have had to share the pain of rising supply chain costs, many of which were being communicated with frightening regularity - often month to month from the same vendors. Thankfully, the situation seems to have plateaued, and the hope is we will see some stability and consistency moving forward.”

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM JOERNS HEALTHCARE IN THE COMING MONTHS?

“Now that would be telling! We continuously benchmark our offer and strive to provide solutions and services that are fitting for the marketplace we share, and the customers we serve. There are one or two exciting plans in the pipeline as you read this, so all I will say for now is, stay tuned to find out more!”

Apex Mobility: Liking it beside the seaside

Apex Mobility recently opened its doors to customers in the seaside town of Burnham-on-Sea in Somerset after husband-andwife team Craig and Chloe Jenkins noticed a gap in the market there. The store opened followed the success of the couple’s first shop WMUK Mobility in Weston-superMare.

Craig established WMUK Mobility in 2010, and, as the business quickly grew, the couple opened a store on

Worle High Street in Weston-superMare.

After noticing an increase in customers from Burnham-on-Sea and the surrounding villages and towns, the couple started looking for suitable premises to open a second store, Apex Mobility. Chloe adds: “As the name suggests, we are just down the road from the local park; Apex Park, and the Haven Holiday Park at Burnhamon-Sea is even closer!”

Prior to their purchase of the new

premises the couple had viewed a number of properties at the end of the high street until they secured the ideal location. This one was located at the beginning of the high street and would attract a good mixture of holidaymakers and locals. The site was previously a bistro, so the couple had to apply for full planning permission for change of use for the premises to open Apex Mobility. “This took much longer than we expected and delayed us by

around six weeks,” Chloe explains. “The local council had been really helpful in helping us with our application and we had lots of local people championing our proposal along the way, which really helped knowing that we were making the right decision opening our store.”

Fortunately, the site was in good condition with little refurbishment needed, and with a bit of help from friends and family the couple were able to get the site ready to open in a few weeks. The premises was pepped up with a fresh carpet, new ceiling, bright LED lights and a slat wall installation.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

The couple couldn’t be happier with Apex Mobility’s location. “We are a stone’s throw from the seafront, right next to the main high street bus stop in Burnham-on-Sea,” says Chloe. “We are near many car parks, which offer free parking for those with a Blue Badge. There is a large coach park for day-trippers and holidaymakers very close to the shop. This means that everyone going towards the main high street, goes past our shop.”

Burnham-on-Sea is particularly popular with retirees, some of whom have come from all over the UK to retire by the seaside and enjoy the relaxed pace of life. The town is also a busy holiday destination and attracts a lot of families that are on holiday exploring the local area and supporting local businesses.

Mobility scooter hire is available to customers for £10 per day with nominimum hire charge or membership to sign up for. The couple worked with an insurance company to assist with getting all of its public liability insurance in place to offer peace of mind for customers purchasing a

mobility scooter or wheelchair.

Having had had over 13 years’ experience in the industry, Craig is particularly knowledgeable about products and can offer plenty of advice to customers about mobility scooters, wheelchairs, mobility aids and other equipment.

He decided to get involved in the mobility sector as he grew up learning about mobility aids and mobility scooters from his dad, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s when Craig was 10 years old. As his dad’s primary carer from the age of 18, Craig was able to understand the challenges and problems that his dad faced in everyday life, and this inspired him to build a business of his own – one that he not only enjoyed but which enables him to help people every day in a caring and patient manner.

Craig’s wife, Chloe, joined the business full-time in 2022. Both share the day-to-day running of the shops, both being customer service focused. Craig takes care of the engineering side of the business, servicing and repairing mobility scooters and equipment, whilst Chloe runs the administration.

When the couple opened Apex Mobility they knew what suppliers they wished to use based on the good relationship they had with them at the first store and these offering quality products at fair prices. This means that the new stock, such as walking

sticks, rollators and daily living aids in Apex Mobility is similar to the products stocked in Worle.

The only difference, says Chloe, is that many of the new mobility scooters are different, which is due to the differences in terrain across the two stores.

Chloe explains: “In Worle, there are lots of large hilly areas, somewhere that the Scooterpac Ignite mobility scooter comes into its own and tackles them with ease! In Burnhamon-Sea the area is very flat.”

Another point of difference is that pre-owned stock is varied and constantly changes in both stores, as the couple try to have a range of products at different prices to suit many people’s requirements and budgets.

The couple aim to always provide the best for its customers to suit all

budgets and mobility needs, says Chloe. “We do this through sales of new and pre-owned mobility products, such as mobility scooters and wheelchairs, as we understand that not all disabled or ill people are able to afford to buy brand new, expensive products.” Apex Mobility aims to set itself apart from any nearby competition by always offering a warm, friendly welcome. Says Chloe: “Our customers are very important to us, and Craig and I are very customer service driven.

“We both have a wide knowledge of mobility products and offer fair, competitive pricing. We have a very large range of products in both our shops, from small daily living aids to large rise/recline chairs to mobility scooters.”

One of the most popular products at the new showroom is the One Rehab Illusion mobility scooter, says Chloe. “The combination of the ultralightweight frame and lithium battery whilst being so comfortable makes the Illusion a brilliant all-rounded scooter.”

She continues: “Many people are surprised with how light and easy it is to assemble. They also love the range of colours and battery options available.”

The couple have developed wellestablished relationships with certain suppliers over the years. They value the customer service that One Rehab provides retailers with and say that they really appreciate the care and availability of products they can source from suppliers such as Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare and Pride Mobility.

Of the newer products to come into their new showroom, the couple have been really impressed with the Monarch Air, due to its premium build quality and how lightweight it is at under 15kg. Chloe enthuses: “Our customers love its design and it’s always eye-catching in store in the beautiful teal colour. It appeals to many people looking for a lightweight scooter which doesn’t have to be taken apart, especially for travel.”

Currently, Craig does all of the repairs and servicing on mobility equipment, however the couple are looking to employ an engineer in the

future. When he’s not busy helping clients Craig likes to keep up-todate with all the newest equipment through attending training days and webinars.

With rising shipping costs and the general cost-of-living on the rise, the couple can see that many mobility equipment suppliers, as in other industries, may have a difficult job in bringing innovative products to the market, but from their point of view it’s all good. “At the moment, there is a really good range of products from trusted suppliers, which is a brilliant situation for retailers like us,” Chloe states.

GROWING THE BUSINESS

Apex Mobility stocks an extensive product range of over 400 products on its website. Chloe says: “We have had to embrace the world of e-commerce as so many people now shop online and having an online presence will always be needed.”

This aside, however, footfall into the physical store from local shoppers will continue to be important. “Being able to see products in store, to feel the build quality and try before you buy is always going to be very important,” says Chloe. “By shopping locally, the customer receives full product demonstrations and can shop at their own pace in a friendly shopping environment with no high-pressure sales. They will also receive free advice, excellent after-

sales support and will be helping to support local business.”

The couple are looking forward to continue growing their business and becoming more established in Burnham-on-Sea and the local area. For both shops, they plan to continue offering the same level of service they have always provided for their customers. Chloe adds: “We are going to keep looking for new innovative products which we can offer and ensure our quality of products remains high.”

As for the future, the couple feels that they have covered all the main aspects of mobility in their stores at the moment but they are “always looking forward” to new products arriving, or existing products being re-designed or upgraded. As for expanding their empire, Chloe concludes: “We are keeping ourselves busy with the two shops, but we will always be keeping an eye out for any opportunities which arise, so watch this space!”

Leading the way in sustainability

A new energy-efficient lighting system is just one of the ways BES Healthcare is demonstrating its commitment to achieving net zero emissions…

BES Healthcare, a provider of healthcare solutions to the NHS and private sectors, recently announced the successful completion of a major sustainability project at its head offices and warehouse, in Bristol, writes Tom

In line with the company’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions, BES Healthcare recently installed new energy-efficient LED lighting systems throughout its facilities, reducing its carbon footprint by an estimated 3-4 tonnes per year.

The funding for this transformative project was made possible through the ‘Low Carbon Challenge Fund’, as

part of the West of England Green Business Grant. With 50 per cent of the installation costs covered by the grant, BES Healthcare wanted to invest in sustainable solutions that would benefit both the company and the environment.

As part of the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint, BES Healthcare has been making greener decisions as each opportunity arises across the board in all areas of its operations. This includes decommissioning the outdated gas heaters in its warehouse, replacing them with highly effective IR heaters, and opting for hybrid vehicles when renewing its company car leases.

Although the company has made significant strides towards a sustainable future, and expresses gratitude to the West of England Combined Authority for its financial support throughout this endeavour,

BES Healthcare recognises that there is still much work to be done in its journey towards achieving net zero emissions.

NHS PLEDGE

As one of the largest healthcare systems in the world, the NHS has pledged to tackle climate change and promote sustainability is a crucial step in addressing the environmental impact of healthcare services.

In October 2020, NHS Chief Executive Lord Simon Stevens announced the NHS’s ambitious goal to become the world’s first major health system to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040.

This deadline is specifically for the emissions the Trust controls directly (the NHS Carbon Footprint), with an additional deadline of 2045 for the emissions the Trust can influence (the NHS Carbon Footprint Plus).

This commitment goes beyond reducing emissions from direct sources, such as buildings and vehicle fleets, to encompass the entire NHS supply chain and the indirect emissions associated with the healthcare sector.

The NHS recognises that climate change poses a significant threat to public health: rising global temperatures, extreme weather events, and other climate-related factors can have adverse effects on people’s health, exacerbating conditions such as respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases,

and mental health issues. By reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainability, the NHS aims to protect the health and well-being of both current and future generations.

The NHS has set ambitious goals to reach net zero emissions by 2045 (NHS Carbon Footprint Plus), and as a supplier of the NHS, and a key player in the healthcare industry, BES Healthcare is fully committed to aligning its practices with the NHS’s sustainability objectives and actively contributing to a greener and healthier future.

GREEN INITIATIVES

BES Healthcare is committed to furthering its journey towards achieving net zero carbon emissions in line with the NHS Carbon Footprint

Plus deadline. In pursuit of this goal, the company has outlined a comprehensive plan for the future.

Within this plan, the company is looking to collaborate closely with the landlord of its head office to install solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) charging points in the car park, aiming to harness clean energy and promote the adoption of EVs among our workforce.

The organisation plans to take measures to enhance energy efficiency by applying thermal films to windows, reducing both heating and cooling requirements within its facilities, and it hopes to make the switch to full EVs as and when the infrastructure and EVs meet its logistical needs.

Couriers and freight forwarding companies will be evaluated based on the carbon emissions these produce, prioritising those with lower environmental impact.

A comprehensive review of packing materials will also be undertaken, actively seeking out sustainable alternatives wherever possible.

Furthermore, BES Healthcare has already begun offsetting a portion of its flying emissions and will be exploring opportunities to increase these efforts in the future, along with encouraging flexible working arrangements where possible to reduce commuting emissions.

YOU HAVE BEEN WORKING AT SUNRISE MEDICAL FOR 18 YEARS NOW. HOW DO YOU THINK THE FIRM HAS EVOLVED DURING THIS TIME?

“One of the things I absolutely love about working for Sunrise Medical is that the company never stands still. It evolves and changes with our customers, the market and with technology. At the heart of everything we do at Sunrise is bringing innovation and new technology to our customers through products and solutions that truly improve people’s lives. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing how this can transform lives.

“This year we are celebrating 40 years of innovation as a company, and there are so many firsts in regards to ground-breaking products that have transformed lives, whether it’s been the development of our MWD Powerchair Technology from the Quickie Salsa M, to the Salsa M2 Mini and now Quickie Q300 M Mini, or introducing technology like hydroforming and ovalised tubing from the professional cycling industry into our Quickie Helium and then evolving this into the UK biggest selling rigid chair, the Quickie Nitrum.

“Or, more recently, the development of our e-mobility range Empulse, that brings some of the most advanced battery technology to lightweight portable e-mobility products that extend the range and

lifestyle of manual wheelchair users.

“Our end users don’t limit their desire to live more active, fulfilled and engaged lives and whilst they are driving us forward for better product solutions, we’ll be here to innovate and work as hard as we can to 'improve people’s lives'.”

segments that really do deliver a step change in performance and provide life-changing benefits for our customers.

“Quickie QS-5X: in most markets you see technology from the premium or high-end segments slowly roll down to the larger mid-range mass market. Unfortunately, this is not seen as often in the mobility industry, well outside of Sunrise.

“The QS-5X is an entry-level active chair for full time users (start price £1500) where we have taken years of technological development, R&D, manufacturing techniques, and premium options for our most premium Quickie Nitrum and rolled it into the QS-5X. The result is the first entry-level to mid-level manual chair using technology from the high-end.

“This is a product that’s lighter, stronger, and more energy efficient than any other products in its segment by a long way – we unveiled it at Naidex and were inundated with advanced orders from dealers who have backlog of assessments.

“Quickie Q50R carbon – is another game changing product that we have been overwhelmed by the pre-orders for its launch. Folding powerchairs are mainly purchased for their ability to fold and lift to put into a boot, however most products on the market are too heavy for one person to lift, especially when considering the demographic of our customers. We have worked for years to perfect our carbon manufacturing to develop, not only an ultra-lightweight carbon folding powerchair but one that is high quality and strong enough to stand up to everyday use.

“We have confidence in what we have built, so much so, we’ve put our Quickie brand on it. The result an ultra-lightweight powerchair weighing just 14.5kg.

“Aside showcasing all of our latest product innovations at the event we’ll also be providing an insight into our marketing processes, providing material to promote our new products and our plans to promote these across our channels.”

WHAT PRODUCT IS A CONSISTENT BESTSELLER FOR SUNRISE MEDICAL?

“By far our most popular product is the Quickie Q300 M Mini. It follows on from its predecessor the Salsa M2 Mini and is packed with more performance than ever before. It’s born for small spaces and tight corners, being the narrowest of our mid-wheel drive powerchairs. It’s just as agile outdoors with a patented all-wheel suspension, which keeps users safe and stable at all times. The range of options available is endless making the Q300 M Mini the ultimate all-rounder.

Managing the upper extremities of the seated person

Despite progress in many aspects of wheelchair development, an area that has had little attention has been the facilitation of the use, and the preservation of function, of our upper extremities. Not only this, often back supports restrict our shoulder blades from behind, while chest or shoulder harnesses can heavily restrict movement from the front. Overall, we are trying to achieve the balance of postural management with facilitating functional activity. For day-to-day functionality, the use of our hands and upper extremities can be critical. But what has been available to facilitate this?

To control our hands we need to have control of our arms, and for that we need control of our shoulders. The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the body. It comprises a complex structure of bones, ligaments, and muscles that work together to keep it stable. However, because the shoulder is so mobile, it is also very susceptible to dislocation. Shoulder subluxation, a partial dislocation of the shoulder joint, is not uncommon. This occurs when the ball of the upper arm bone, the humerus, partly comes out of the glenoid socket in the shoulder. Complications of shoulder subluxation include: shoulder pain, loss of upper extremity function, tone increase, tendinitis of the rotator cuff tendons, and stiffening of the

shoulder joint capsule. A shoulder subluxation is often the result of trauma, injury, neuromuscular disease, or a stroke (CVA) that weakens the arm muscles.

UPPER BODY TRAUMA

Many people who’ve had a stroke end up with mobility difficulties, and as a result come to depend on a wheelchair. Approximately 80 per cent of these individuals develop shoulder subluxation as a result of muscle weakness leading to shoulder joint destabilization together with gravity pulling down on the head of the humerus bone1. Research also reveals that 29 per cent of post-stroke patients suffer from shoulder pain2

After traumatic brain injury, one report showed that 84 per cent of the patients developed contractures, and after just four weeks 23 per cent of these contractures had become ‘fixed’3. It is therefore critical that early intervention be applied, since this can prevent these problems developing. In addition, apart from the loss of function, these sudden onset mobility challenges frequently come with severe pain.

ARM SUPPORTS, RESTS, OR TROUGHS?

Most wheelchairs’ arm supports do little to prevent or alleviate these problems of pain and reduced functionality. Maybe this is because

Over the years engineers have made a steady progression in improving wheelchairs and their accessories to the benefit of their occupants. Improvements have been made in reducing the weight of components and increasing the adaptability of components. Postural support devices for positioning the pelvis, the lower extremities, the trunk, and the head have been developed to improve the occupant’s functionality. The area that has been previously overlooked has been around the management of the upper extremities, but this has now been tackled, as covered in this article.

the arm supports are still often being referred to as arm rests, showing no recognition of their clinical importance?

What are the challenges with common wheelchair arm rests? Just as foot supports should be adjustable to achieve the optimum distance for the lower leg from the seat cushion, arm supports should be finitely adjustable to get the forearm (and therefore the upper arm) at the right height. Further, the top of the arm support should support the forearm and wrist so that they do not fall off

40 / www.thiis.co.uk
LET’S GET IT CLEAR
Figure 1, A typical arm rest providing little arm support

the support (Figure 1).

When the arm support is provided in the form of a standard ‘trough’, there are three problems with this design. One is that the trough restricts movement and thereby restricts both physical rehabilitation and also general function; secondly, the arm tends to be forced parallel with the seat frame, whereas the anatomically correct position is to allow the forearm to rotate medially by 10-15 degrees; and thirdly, the hand tends to fall into a flattened pronated position and the fingers and wrist remain unsupported (Figure 2).

To have a perception of where the arm should rest: while seated, drop your arms down by your sides in a relaxed position. Then flex your arms at the elbows and see where your forearm and hand positions end up. This is the anatomically preferable resting position of the hand and forearm, and thence the upper arm and shoulder joint.

A PRACTICAL SUPPORT

So what do we need for an anatomically correct arm support?

The answer is:

• One that supports the elbow at the right height (supporting the elbow in line with the shoulder joint will help prevent subluxation),

• One that supports the distal forearm in a medially rotated position

• One that permits dynamic

movement of the forearm

• One that supports the hand in the optimal position and with the thumb abducted

• One that allows hand movement but can absorb unintended tone. Such a device is now available in the shape of the ModuformTM. This device was

invented by the Belgian

physiotherapist and seating specialist Bart Van der Heyden4 (Figure 3) in 2009 and has since been developed and released by Bodypoint5.

The ModuformTM (Figure 4) supports the distal forearm in an anatomical resting position, as well as supporting the hand and fingers, thereby providing three points of support for the upper extremities. Positioning the hand so the thumbs are abducted and extended, with the fingers extended, provides a tone-

inhibiting position. In the event that tone of the finger flexor muscles occurs, the dynamic finger section of the ModuformTM will absorb tone, while a strap over the metacarpals will control the hand position during extensor spasms.

In addition, by allowing the elbow section to pivot, shoulder movement can remain, and even be trained, while the upper extremities are held in a safe anatomical position. The ModuformTM helps keep the hand in view, thereby reducing ‘neglect’.

The ModuformTM dynamic arm support enables appropriate support as it offers three-point positioning, while providing the following benefits:

• Supports the entire upper extremity for optimal results

• Customisable and ‘off the shelf’, making it configurable and adjustable

• Provides proprioceptive input to the shoulder

• Allows for progressive positioning

• Facilitates a functional position of the hand and tone reduction

The ModuformTM also offers unique adjustment where:

• Gross lateral and rotational positioning can be accomplished through appropriate placement of the base plate

• A pivot system allows for 60 degrees of total range of motion (ROM): 30 degrees of internal rotation and 30 degrees of external rotation at the shoulder, which

• Facilitates active ROM and proprioceptive exercise

• Allows for optimal positioning

‘Let’s Get it Clear’ by Dr Barend ter Haar

One in a series of monthly resumés of aspects in the world of posture and mobility where there are common misconceptions, and myths to be addressed, to help promote better practice. Further items can be found at www.beshealthcare.net.

that can be changed as needs change

• Progressive position changes are possible over time

• Each component can be individually adjusted for fit and function (Figure 5).

APPLICATIONS

The ModuformTM dynamic upper extremity support is appropriate for the management of hypertonicity, resistance to passive movement, shoulder pain, and shoulder subluxation involving neurological involvement of the upper extremities arising from:

• Stroke (CVA)

• Brachial plexus injury

• Other progressive or traumatic neurological impacts on the upper extremity as may be seen in diagnoses such as

• Spinal cord injury (SCI)

• Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

• Muscular dystrophies

• Multiple sclerosis

• Parkinson’s

The ability to set up the device correctly, and the means for allowing movement in the right planes, are both critical for pain relief, for early physical rehabilitation, and for dynamic functionality. As ever, the earlier the intervention, the fewer the subsequent complications, and the faster the rehabilitation.
