Scholar Strike outside the coady on September 8th 2020 Adelaide Strickland Arts & Community Editor

On September 9 and 10, 2020, scholars at universities across Canada stepped out of their virtual and physical classrooms to protest racism and police brutality in North America. They paused their teaching and administrative duties, and instead organized marches, demonstrations, and teach-ins in support of a list of demands. Those demands include: defunding the police and redistributing the resources to BIPOC, queer, and trans communities; removing campus police; addressing the underrepresentation of BIPOC faculty at Canadian institutions; and committing to actively “recruit, admit, retain, and mentor” BIPOC students. The Scholar Strike Canada website states that the concept was inspired by a tweet from Dr. Anthea Butler, who was inspired by the recent WNBA and NBA strike. Dr. Butler’s call for a similar labour action from academics quickly garnered attention, and spurred action in the U.S (her home country) as well as in Canada, where the nation-wide strike was organized by Beverly Bain and Min Sook Lee. Desmond Cole, a Canadian journalist, author, and activist, gave the keynote to kick off the Canadian strike and teach-ins on September 9. Titled “Abolition or death: Confronting police forces in Canada,” the keynote asked “who is being policed in Canada and why?” The answer is the motivation behind ongoing Black Lives Matter protests, and the driving the police. Cole spends three

minutes of the talk listing the everyday ways in which police violence is perpetuated:

“It’s the arrests and assaults on us that are then documented as assaults against the police … It’s the routine sexual assaults cause they know that they can get away with it … It’s the clearing out of homeless encampments during a global pandemic because people who own property don’t want to see homeless people around them ... It’s the thousands of black people in this country who can’t apply for jobs because they have a criminal record for possessing or selling marijuana ... It’s the police intimidation of non-status families, who want to send their kids to school but don’t, because they are scared of being deported.” Abolition isn’t about money, Cole says; it’s “about our lives.” Scholars at StFX were quick to join the strike, and support the calls to action. Following Cole’s keynote, dozens of faculty, staff, students, and community members met masked and social-distanced in front of the Coady International Institute. Organized by Dr. Corrine Cash and Dr. Donna Trembinski, the gathering highlighted the voices of people of colour, featuring speeches from Denton Anthony, Tara Reddick, Dhruv Patel, Ornella Nzindukiyimana, and Wendy Mackey. Dr. Cash was very pleased with the turnout, seeing various athletic teams, coaches, and community members out in support alongside faculty and students. In her own speech, Dr. Cash called for StFX administration

to “create a multiracial committee that conducts an audit of all facets of the university to identity racism, discriminations.” She shared that she hopes a study of this kind could be used to inform real action, in the form of a strategic plan aimed at obliterating racism and discrimination on campus. Dr. Cash encourages anyone who wishes to see the same to email StFX President Dr. Andy Hakin, and let him know. The event comes at a pressing time for StFX, following the announcement of an increased RCMP presence on campus. A number of the event’s speakers explicitly condemned the school’s decision to allow RCMP on campus, and the province’s decision to involve them in check-ins for isolating students. Following the speeches, the organizers led a march through campus, stopping to chant “Black Lives Matter” and “no justice, no peace” in front of Dr.

really nice to see them do something, and to respond to the problematic announcement of RCMP on campus,” shared Trembinski. It is evident in their enthusiastic participation that many StFX faculty, staff, and students wish to see an end to racism and discrimination on campus. The question now, is what will it take for that to happen, and how much more of a push do administration need to act?

Hi Folks from the RCMP station on West Street. In an interesting turn of events, members of the school’s upper administration, including President Hakin and Academic Vice President Kevin Wamsley, were also present at the march. Donna Trambinski shares that “it was great to see them, but they’re putting into practice policies that are problematic for people of colour on campus.” Attending a march is one thing, but actually doing the work to ensure a safe and equitable campus environment is something else entirely. “It would be

Welcome

And Let’s Get Ready For A Year Like No Other

Andrew Hakin StFX University President It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to St. Francis Xavier University for the 202021 academic year. To say this isn’t how I envisioned beginning my weeks as president of this wonderful institution is … ment. And I think it’s safe to say it’s likely not the start to the year that you would have anticipated either. Still, I am incredibly encouraged by the resiliency our students, faculty, and staff have shown in the face of challenging and uncertain circumstances. It is this resiliency that has allowed us to resume teaching, learning, and research here on to ensure the health and safety of all. This next year will be a different experience for those of you who have already come to know and love StFX. The health and safety restrictions put in place to manage and contain the spread of COVID-19 call on us all to embrace “different.” We must all be mindful of the need to respect physical distancing, to wash our hands on a regular basis, wear masks at all times while on campus, to limit social gatherings, and to follow the guidelines put in place by these are just some of the steps we must follow to ensure our campus remains a healthy and welcoming place to live, learn, and grow. While many things will be different this year, one thing that will not change is our commitment to outstanding teaching and learning. Faculty have been hard at work over the summer months to adapt their teaching and research activities and prepare for this new

“normal.” They are ready for you and are eager to continue the tradition of academic excellence that has characterized StFX for nearly 170 years. Although many things are changing this year, rest assured, this isn’t. One of the things that strikes me about StFX is the fact that for a long time, the university our academics, but by a sense of citizenship and a commitment to be a good neighbour. This year especially, I ask that every single StFX student embrace and embody this sense to their very core. While StFX is part of the fabric of the greater Antigonish region, it is important that we recognize that local residents are anxious to have so many people descend upon our small town in the era of COVID-19. This is especially true students, including those from outside of Atlantic Canada, are all us – and especially you, our students – to be a good neighbour by following all StFX and government health and safety guidelines to keep yourselves, each other, and the wider Antigonish community safe. You are about to embark on an amazing journey. And yes, while different, opportunities for you are still abundant. Explore these opportunities, get involved, even if virtually. Practice safe socializing and connect with your professors and classmates. Look into the many societies and discover how to create and participate in amazing experiences. Don’t let experience. Let it guide the way you approach new experiences, but never let it stand in your way. Be safe, and in-

novative. Be smart and look for ways to accomplish your goals while employing the lowest possible risks to yourself, your classmates, and your community. When we choose to care for ourselves and one another, we will remain healthy. The alternative and associated consequence is not one I like to think about – transitioning to online learning. Be safe and I guarantee you will not regret it. Together let’s #XOutCovid. In closing, I want to express my deep gratitude for all who have worked so hard to make this academic year happen. It’s no exaggeration to say there are too many to point out speally’, but it is because of their efforts and commitment to go above and beyond, their countless hours of developing and executing plans designed to keep you safe and engaged, that we all have the opportunity to be here, at the place we love so dearly. I wish you all the best for a wonderful academic year. Sincerely, Dr. Andy Hakin President and Vice-Chancellor

Cam’s Kids

MSCS Society

Kaileigh Hiltz Contributor

Alexa DeSilva Contributor

A great society on campus!

The Cam’s Kids Foundation established in 2015, in memory of Cameron Hicks. Cam suffered from debilitating anxiety in his early teens to the point where he was unable to attend school on a regular basis. Thankfully, by his Junior year of high school, Cam was fully re-integrated into school, learning to effectively manage his anxiety through a variety of holistic resources and remedies. Tragically, Cam was struck by a motor vehicle at the age of nineteen while attending the University of Ottawa. Cam’s family founded Cam’s Kids Foundation to help young people across Canada that may also be struggling with anxiety. Since then, the Foundation has grown into a nationwide organization, and has partnered with Canada’s only national support service: Kids Help Phone (and their sister company Good2Talk). Cam’s Kids is proud to say that the Foundation is run almost entirely by young Ambassadors. These nation-wide Ambassadors raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of anxiety, strategies for managing the debilitating effects, and educate others on the many resources available on www. camskids.com. Many of these Ambassadors have had their own experiences with anxiety, allowing them to share their story and empower their peers to know they are not alone. Cam’s Kids Ambassadors can be found in communities, high schools, and post-secondary institutions across Canada – including St. FX University, which currently

is made up of a group of fourteen passionate, and caring young individuals. Co-team leads for the St. FX team include Kaileigh Hiltz, and Bailey Chisholm, who have helped grow the team over the last two years. To support their fellow peers, Bailey, Kaileigh, and the rest of their team run mental wellness initiatives throughout the school year. Of noteworthy mention include the Candy Cane Campaign and Chocolate Heart Campaign, which aim to not only bring joy to students, but also to provide tips and tools on how to manage anxiety during stressful periods of life, such as exam season. Hence the strategic timing of these two campaigns: December exam season, and February midterms. Cam’s Kids Ambassadors can also be found setting up a booth on Bell Let’s Talk Day, raising awareness on the realities of anxiety and mental health, and reducing the stigma that surrounds these struggles. While things may be going virtual for the 2020-2021 school year, these Ambassadors are still here to support you. By tuning in to the Cam’s Kids Instagram

Kenny’s Vs The Wheel A question as old as time. Brendan Boucher Staff Writer During a young person’s time at St. Francis Xavier University (St.FX) and even long after they leave, Xavierians will always be asked the same set of questions: “Where did you live?” “What program did you study?” “Do you know soand-so?” Undoubtedly, one questions they will hear the most is 4 simple words: “Kenny’s or the Wheel?” This simple question seems to invoke a passion and pride in residence of Antigonish like nothing else. This long running debate has turned friends against each other and has the potential to fracture any group dining experience. However usually this friendly rivalry brings people together in great celebration of food they all adore. Kenny’s and The Wheel are both staples of this cozy corner of Nova Scotia that seems to attract national notoriety. The Wheel, located on Main Street directly adjacent to Xavier Hall is a true reflection of the character of Antigonish with a family feel to the interior and dozens of smiling patrons looking on from the walls including Astronauts, NHL hockey players and

world adventurers. The Wheel thrives on not only it’s pizza, but it’s garlic fingers, sub sandwiches and even some off the menu secrets that only true fans will be able to get their hands on. Kenny’s, located not far from campus either on College Street, across from Pipers Pub which is another student favourite. Kenny’s is not a single location but an East Coast chain of 13 locations Kenny’s has a more modern decor with an open feel. Kenny’s offers a menu consisting of pizza, garlic fingers, donairs, subs and all the other Italian staples. Kenny’s is also licensed to serve alcohol which they offer beer by the glass or pitcher to complement their delicious food. Comparing these 2 restaurants, a potential diner can find a very similar menu at both establishments, along with the same extremely friendly, personal and unparalleled customer service that is a staple of what makes Antigonish so welcoming to students. These eateries also feature comfortable booths, pizza by the slice, takeout and delivery options as well as an assortment of cold drinks.

Despite being so similar, these pizzerias offer 2 very diverse options when it comes to pizza and other menu items. The Wheel offers a fullbodied thick crust pizza that features an almost sweet tasting sauce and cheese that makes you want to scrape any residue off the bottom of the box like the ever cherished bonus fries at the bottom of the bag. The Wheel’s garlic fingers can bring a grown man to his knees with one bite. When craving something else, the subs rival anything a sandwich artist could create, and it is highly recommended to order garlic bread with the order. On the other side of town, Kenny’s serves up a slightly thinner crust pie with an emphasis on their rich toppings. Kenny’s pizza is best consumed fresh out of the oven, especially the garlic fingers which are a little lighter than those at The Wheel but still equally as magical. The pasta at Kenny’s is underrated and fantastic along with the poutine. Some of the other honourable mentions would be the wings and the Mega Donair Bowl is perfect to share. An Unsung Hero

Pray for It

Learn about one of the awesome cleaning staff on campus. Preet Banga News Editor An unsung hero…. It is rightly said that true heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic… It is the urge to serve others at whatever cost. In the past few months, we heard many new words in the context of Covid-19, that have become a part of the daily vocabulary. Some words such as “corona warriors” or frontline workers, stand out immediately and bring a sense of gratitude for them. However, some undervalued heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic, who really need to be recognized, are the cleaning staff, very critical to preventing the spread of the virus. One such hero at StFX is Gail BowlesFraser from the cleaning staff, who is a very familiar face for all of us. Gail is always there to help the new students at the residences, sometime even teaching them how to do laundry. The past few months have been challenging for Gail, who took some time off in summer, and is now back, ready to help us. Gail grew up in Toronto

However, the community that she loves the most and knows very well is the campus community. “I love that summer is over and the students are coming back… I am no longer just the cleaner to them; I feel more connected to the students here at StFX… almost as if I am their honorary aunt.”

Gail said, “students become my family.” Her husband, Paul Fraser, is also very supportive of her work. Asked if she feels safe being back at campus, Gail says “knowing that there are testing rules on campus and everyone will be tested for Covid-19 before they arrive on campus made me feel safer too.” “I can’t wait to see all the students back on campus!”

Gail loves to learn about other cultures and accept them in her life. Perhaps that’s the reason she is so close to students at StFX, who come from different backgrounds. Recalling her childhood, Gail says, “it was hard for us to be a blended family because we have many different blood streams and therefore different personalities but I believe that kindness helps to win people over, and I actually learned this from my mother.”

Gail, who grew up in a rough neighbourhood in Toronto, but her husband is from Antigonish. She found the people here very nice, and this has been her since she moved here with her husband. Gail is very well connected with other community members and during her time off from the campus in summer, she would sometimes have tea with others at the porch. She really wants to do

She usually visits her family twice in a year but was not able to go this year because of Covid-19. She was also scheduled to visit Australia this year to visit her stepchildren and grandchildren, but it had to be cancelled. “My dream is to see the whole world,” says Gail.

Landon Morris Contributor July Talk has always been known to please their fans. The Toronto band features the clashing voices of the soft and soaring Leah Fay, the gravelly and growling Peter Dreimanis, drummer Danny Miles, bassist Josh Warburton, and guitarist Ian Docherty. The group are known for their energetic and loud live shows, often involving Faye dancing around the stage and getting into the crowd, all while barefoot. The band has earned a reputation as one of Canada’s loudest and most in-your-face bands of the modern era. Prior to Pray For It, July Talk released 2 studio albums — a self titled album in 2012, and Touch in 2016. The selftitled album inseminated the public ear with a brand of abrasive and loud rock music the band would be known for, a sound they would deliver again on Touch. While July Talk was hit after hit front-to-back, Touch showed signs of progression from the band, experimenting more with their sound and giving their tracks more room to breathe.

When the band began releasing singles for Pray For It, the songs signified a new sonic palette for the band. Their signature gritty guitar riffs and fire-in-the-belly attitude was traded for something smoother, more relaxed and less in-your-face. Going into this album, the listener is posed a question: Is Pray For It a step in the right direction or a failed attempt at a new sound? On Pray For It, the band has infinite space to move around and experiment with their sound. Is this album perfect? No. Is it a step in the right direction? Absolutely. same material, the July Talk sound becomes stale. On Pray For It, the band presents a whole set of new ideas sonically and lyrically that blow their earlier material out of the water. Although July Talk is known for their sound, the best thing about Pray For It, by far, is the songwriting. The group has always touched on social justice, gender and sexuality, violence. On Pray For It, the band looks at the way these themes affect society and explores a simple question: Countined on next page

PRME Steering Committee ------------------------------------In 2019, the StFX Schwartz School of Business signed on to become a member of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative. PRME is a United Nations-supported initiative that works through six principles and seeks to raise schools around the world. PRME engages business and management schools to ensure they provide

future leaders with the skills needed to balance economic and sustainability goals, while drawing attention to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and aligning academic institutions with the work of the UN Global Compact. Through this initiative the Schwartz Business School is formally acknowledging its commitment to responsible education as it aligns its teaching, research and knowledge dissemination with those concepts, so its graduates are able to enter the workforce concerned about and having a skill set in social responsibility and sustainability. In the upcoming year, the PRME Steering committee will

begin incrementally adding relevant PRME material into courses, events and the Schwartz Business School as a whole. Countined Album Review: why? The band looks at these relationships from a microscopic viewpoint and explores their intricacies on a level much deeper than surface. This all starts on the opening track, and third single from the album, Identical Love, which starts the album on a very haunting note with a very fragile and sweeping drone that builds throughout the song and later in the track. The writing is almost poetic. “The evening heat surrounded us // It blossomed from the cup // The only one of their kind // Welcome inside” The album then moves into the song Good Enough which has very dark lyrics about feeling inadequate and being in a manipulative relationship, but is

ing tonally similar to the ominous opener, Identical Love.

Although the album has several other high notes like Life of The Party, Pay For It, and Governess Shadow, the album has some pretty unignorable missteps. Current Sports Update Updates and current standing of the NHL and MBA Jack Millbank Sports Editor A new term has risen in the sports world, for the sports association it means extensive planning and legal burdens, for the players it means isolation and for the fans it means that sports are back! “Bubble”... The term refers to the process of encasing an entire league into a restricted area, separating themselves from the outside world. It has been described as a “campus-like environment”. This entails organizing league of-

Every sports league has approached the bubble method differently but one aspect that is uniform amongst all the associations is the protocol to have no spectators present at the games. It is our goal to provide you with the most timely, impactful, and accurate content during your time at StFX. On the cover of this edition, we are featuring an art piece by Emma Kuzmyk, a fourth year English student. Emma’s piece is meant to represent what StFX looks like in 2020. We hope that this art speaks to you in the same way it speaks to us. Also in this edition, we are featuring a number of societies and student organizations, which in unique ways will shape your time here. These societies are run by passionate, talented students, who give their all to provide you with opportunities that you won’t

This year will be like no other. The student body is anxious. There is no way we can predict how this year will go. Despite this, we also know that many students are excited to be back. This is a time for building relationships and rekindling friendships. Despite the physical distancing we all must engage in, we can become closer than ever. Outside of the buildings and the lectures, what makes StFX special is the student body. Our students are not only among the brightest and most talented, but there is a spirit of advocacy in each of us. Students at this university sexualized violence, climate change, and racial equality. More importantly, we advocate for eachother. The closeness of our community and the relationships we form cause us to work for individual change. We

Our message to you is twofold. Get involved. It is only with passionate and sincere involvement in your classes, in societies, and in your social groups that you will grow and learn.
