Chadwick Boseman November 29, 1976 – August 28, 2020

When I heard the news of Chadwick Boseman’s passing, I cried privately.

Little did we know that Chadwick was living out his on-screen superhero character in a very human way. He had walked his journey knowing the challenges ahead of him and despite the fact that everyone around him would never know his bravery, his pain and his resolve to give back to so many and to do it out loud.

Boseman plays T’Challa and lives in the county of Wakanda which was without outside powers extracting its resources, or imposing exploitative policies, so Wakanda flourished and became the most technologically advanced country on Earth, rich in natural resources. Wakanda symbolizes a nirvana of possibilities asking the questions: What would have happened to humanity not influenced by the destructive impact of racism and colonialism? What would the world be like designed and managed by One Blak Tribe.

Key West in my book was a Wakanda but its rebellion had no to-the-death fights or take-overs like Wakanda or the US had. I totally understood when Killmonger saw Wakanda for the first time and wanted it all. Especially when he saw the resources and people that his cousin T’Challa had, their loyalty and love for him and what he was missing out on. The problem with Killmonger’s self-seized kingdom in America was by instilling fear and violence as a means of survival. In reality we understand, it’s not his fault.

If Killmonger was a descendant of one of those 39 men in 1787 he would feel he had the right to go anywhere in the world and take whatever did not belong to him. And equally so, if Killmonger were a descendant of those hippies that posted up 127 miles north of my personal Wakanda to protect what was rightfully his, his actions would probably be condoned. But Killmonger is not from them.

Wakanda is our story: One Blak Tribe. Some of us had to live in the character of fear; fittingly named Killmonger, still searching for our place to be. But there are some of us who do live in the character of humankind knowing that we were given a little more time to share our own Wakanda with the world. Wakanda Forever!

Colin Kaepernick Next Thursday, September 17 is Constitution Day. On that day in 1787 was the signing of a document by 39 men who would recognize that all who were born on US territory or by naturalization have and would be citizens of these United States of America.

Contrary to popular knowledge, I hold a dual citizenship of two nations, well sort of. I was born in Key West Florida and I am a proud Conch (KäNGk – the “ch” is pronounce “k”]) On April 23, 1982 after the last snowbirds boarded up their vacation homes and the Spring break tourist were back in their 32 degree temperatures, a group of residents (definitely retired Hippies) called in the United States Border Patrol and set up a roadblock and an inspection point at the top of the 127-mile stretch of 42 bridges that string a twolane path between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico; aka The Conch Republic.

Barely newsworthy enough, Atlanta’s ABC News reported that the city of Key West had succeeded from the United States of America. Yep! Insane as it sounded, I still gathered my birth certificate, immunization record, pictures, newspaper articles and my passport and drove the 16 hours and 840 miles from Atlanta to get my citizenship. Sargent Fernandez was the border patrol at the first checkpoint, armed and ready for whatever. He leaned down to steal some of my ice-cold AC blowing out the window. In an uncomfortable crouched position, he inspected each document, eyeing me after each one. He had never seen a real Conch birth certificate, so he went over and sat in his supervisor’s ice-cold car. They talked it over and both came over to my car stealing more AC. He smiled a big smile, handed me some Conch Currency and said to report to the President of the Conch Republic in Key West because I was an “official native”. The Sargent blew his Conch shell horn, and escorted me out until my taillights blended into the sunset. Returning home to The Nation of The Conch Republic to my rightful place, my name, my feeling of belonging to something of value. You could say it was my Wakanda.

WHY ARE THEY AFRAID OF BLACK PEOPLE? That question has dominated dining room tables, golf courses and boardrooms and still the answers are more complex, unacceptable and should be crowned as the most intolerable truths of the century.

Why? The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) says that “If we want to understand the state of Race in America, we need to know our past — particularly the painful parts.”

EPIGENETICS1 is a science that is based on the concept of changes in gene expression and the concept of active and inactive genes. Epigenetic scientists study how cells change to adapt into being skin cells, or liver cells, or even cancerous cells. But now, epigenetic scientists’ have conducted new studies that suggest that lots of our genetic memories, fears and behaviors are passed down genetically from our parents, grandparents and our ancestors in an instinctive effort by their DNA to better prepare ours for difficult experiences that they have faced, such as fear, disease, or trauma.

At Emory University’s School of Medicine (Atlanta Georgia, USA) scientist found that their subjects (mice) were capable of passing information and phobias down through generations. At the University of Tel Aviv in Israel scientists there discovered that conditions like starvation affected the DNA of the (mice) offspring. Researchers concluded that these specific genes were passed along in an instinctive attempt to prepare descendants for hardship. Scientists have yet to test this phenomenon in humans. Even though we are extremely different from mice, if these findings were applicable to humans, the experiments show strong evidence for the concept that memories could be biologically transmitted and the results of our ancestors’ past on trauma and fears could be the key in understanding some forms of human behaviors and the way we see the world around us.

NEGROPHOBIA2 is described as a fear, hatred or extreme aversion to Black people and Black culture worldwide. A term popularized by Frantz Fanon, a French West Indian psychiatrist and political philosopher that developed an insightful social analysis of antiblack racism, which became persuasive in the fields of post-colonial studies, critical theory and Marxism.

Fanon, a political activist, Pan-Africanist, and Marxist humanist was genuinely concerned with the human, social and cultural consequences of decolonization.

WEALTH AND REAL ESTATE In the early 20th century, the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa Oklahoma was unique. It was referred to as a “Black Wall Street” and was home to Black and Native Americans who had become wealthy from oil discoveries.

Its main strip was swaggered with attorneys’ offices, auto shops, cafes, a movie theater, funeral homes, pool halls, beauty salons, grocery stores, fur shops and bakeries. Tulsa and America’s White residents were disturbed by the growing Black wealth and sought to impose official segregation measures. In 1914, Tulsa passed a law that prohibited anyone from living on a block where more than three quarters (3/4) of the preexisting residents were of another race. In isolation, Greenwood’s wealthy Blacks thrived and the resentment among whites against a community of nearly 5,000 was easily agitated by the unclear incident that happened in the elevator of the Drexel Building on May 30, 1921.

As the narrative is remembered that during the course of the elevator’s bumpy ride, a Black teenager named Dick Rowland accidentally tripped against the elevator operator (and now one else), startling a White 17-year-old named Sarah Page, causing her to scream. The facts ebbed as the story quickly and viciously spiraled into a sexual assault allegation against Mr. Rowland.

HISTORY writes that the 1921Tulsa Massacre destroyed more than 35 blocks of the city along with more than 1,200 homes and left some 300 people dead, mostly Black. Ten thousand people were left homeless. Epigenetic scientist could effectively claim that this one incident may have been indelibly biologically transmitted from our ancestors’ past trauma and fears into the DNA of both Blacks and Whites. (…and yes, for another blog – the most deadliest act of Domestic terrorism to date and is rarely mentioned or taught in schools.)

Tulsa is one in a thousand examples of how White fears propagate generations and why they fear Black people. So, in order for us orchestrate change to our own lives, family and community we must be willing to learn, change and share truth, no matter how painful.

We will edit and write it beautifully for you. The writing style is still a blog so you can be as expressive as you like, we just like the layout to be magazine style. And don’t worry about finding pictures, One Blak Tribe will choose good quality pictures that best fit your writing theme. And just before print we will email your final cut to you for your approval. But just know that One Blak Tribe reserves the right to edit for clarity and palatability for universal reading enjoyment.
