One Blak Tribe

In the Spring of 2005 when my Dad was so amazingly defying his terminal diagnosis of cancer, he would sit on his Key West Handprint-covered sofa toying with the time that his oncologist said he could steal from the life he had grown to love so very much. with a steady regimen of chemotherapy, he became the master thief of time.

It was there wedged between the plastic-covered orange side chair (yes plastic!) and the mundane political chatter of CSPAN that Dad predicted the senator representing Illinois’ 13th Legislative district of Chicago would be the first Black President of the United States. Though he didn’t live to see Senator Barack Obama serve two terms, he would spend the next 18 months preparing me for the fallout of being Black in America as we traveled our bi-weekly 99-mile round trip drive to Key West for his bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments.

Dad was definitely qualified to predict change. Beside watching CNN and The History Channel every day, he had already lived through Hitler, Reagan and Rap Music. He was crowned a super-qualifier by the small two-block city “us Blacks” called the Rock that was hidden between Miami and Key West. We owned a 200-seat restaurant, motel, nightclub & Disco my grandparents built in 1948. He and his life-long compadré Clyde Ferrell were the bartenders to the locals and famous alike and cultivated every conversation on every subject between Miami and Key West.

An avid Ebony, Time Magazine, Wallstreet Journal and National Geographic reader and history hound dog, Dad developed a keen eye for disruptive and misapplied justice afforded to Blacks in America. Though it pained him to express his predictions of increased racial unrest and the slaughtering of Blacks, he predicted the very state of America as we now live in 2020.

The weather was perfect that last Thursday before Dad’s ‘forth-week off chemo session, so I packed an extra oxygen tank just in case he wanted to stop for lunch and go to the Barbershop on Petronia Street. The clientele was younger than his 85 years, but his barber would take every bit of 90minutes on his 10-minute haircut just to hear his account of his favorite Black legends like Kubla Khan, the Zulu Nation and the Black Panther movement. If time permitted, he would recant his second-hand stories from his brother-in-law Harold Francis who played piano for the Ink Spots for a tour.

On the drive home, in the safety of his Mitsubishi Mirage, Dad would without fail or break in sequence, continue our secret debate. I knew that his generation was never allowed to talk about it out loud or near a White person, so this was his therapy, purge and dream session with his “wanna-be” journalist daughter at the wheel with nowhere to go for an hour. So, I listened, engaged and dreamed too. But after ten solid months, twice a week and on Sundays after church I knew he was serious. Each week he would ask the same questions, regurgitate each highlight almost word-for-word and then start in with another angle. Sometimes he would stop in mid-strategy, turn so he could see the expression on my face that would reveal his sane or insanity and ask the “infamous question. It was always when I turned on my leftturn blinker and scooted in the turning lane to our street he would say, “You should write this down in your own way, get a magazine to print it and tell the world about it. Promise me you will?”

“I Am Not African Because I Was Born In Africa But Because Africa Was Born In Me”

WHO ARE BLACK PEOPLE?1 Are we Negro, Black, Black African, African Caribbean, African American or what? Without debate we all can agree that both race and ethnicity are difficult concepts. In spite of this multi-centennial debate, broad terms such as Black, African or Black African are still deep-rooted in scientific writings that still maintain both an offensive and inaccurate characterization. Between race and ethnicity, there is an abstract difference even though the two are often used interchangeably or as synonyms.

In 1749 Georges-Louis Leclerc DeBuffon first introduced the concept of race and the idea that species change over time. His technique of comparing similar structures across different species, called comparative anatomy, is used still today in the study of evolution. Many researchers and policy makers have long argued against the use of race categories in medicine as they reinforce existing social divisions in society or may and generally do lead to discriminatory practices.

NEGRO The term Negro means the color black in Spanish.

The term Negro was widely used by White Europeans as a shortened form of the racial classification Negroid to describe people of sub-Saharan African heritage. Until the mid-20th century the term Negro was widely used for African Americans but was disfavored in the late 20th century. Today it is universally considered unacceptable and derogatory and no longer tolerated except when used by people of African origin.

BLACK The term Black generally refers to a person with African ancestral origins and often means all non-White minority populations. It has a long use in social, political, and everyday life.

AFRICAN [ORIGIN] Ancient Romans used the name Africa terra—“land of the Afri” (or “Afer” singular) for the northern part of the continent, relating to modern day Tunisia. Today the name Africa is used to refer to the whole continent. Ironically, a person usually refers to where a person is born or is identified by others as African, is certainly their origin but usually excludes those residents of Africa of other ancestry like Europeans and South

Asians and sometimes excludes North Africans, such as Algerians. African is currently the favorite prefix when conversation is more specifically speaking to the African American and African Caribbean, which are based on regional ethnic or cultural matters.

AFRICAN AMERICAN The term African American has been used at least since the 1920s and refers to a person who self identifies or is identified by others of African ancestral origins.

Most African Americans are descendants of persons brought to the Americas as slaves between the 17th and 19th century and has been the preferred term in the USA since the 1970s.

Generally, African Americans in the USA originated from sub-Saharan Africa, the term is not applied to Africans from northern African countries such as Morocco or the Caribbean.

In terms of culture, language, migration history, and health.

These differences are often ignored.

AFRICAN CARIBBEAN /AFRO-CARIBBEAN The term African Caribbean /Afro-Caribbean when used in Europe and North America usually refers to people with African ancestral origins who migrated through a multitude of Caribbean islands or West Africa. African Caribbean people have cultural values, which are different from other African populations in terms of language, diet, customs, beliefs, and migration history. These differences are commonly ignored and are lumped together into one heterogeneous African population.

MIXED ETHNICITY OR RACE The mixed ethnicity or race describes people whose ancestors are not of a single ethnicity or race. Though the importance of this category is being increasingly recognized, in epidemiology and public health however, the categorization of people with mixed ethnicity has not been supported because the number of potential categories is likely to be enormous.

Now we have a background of who started what and why we are called Black, or whatever it is that you have embraced.

So, in order for us orchestrate change to our own lives, family and community we must be willing to dream it, do it and be it so that we can share it.

You Must Learn Why You Are Blak History The Ancestors Say “Our passions are the winds that compel our ship. Our reasoning is the pilot that steers her. Without winds the ship would not move and without a pilot she would be lost.

We’ll write our take on it and offer solutions that move us toward answers, (if any) ways to design a world where we can live as one tribe – no hindrance of color, religion, disability or style.

We invite contributors from around the globe to send their ideas of solutions in 500 words or less. One Blak Tribe reserves the right to edit for clarity and palatability for universal reading enjoyment. The blog format is magazine style. One Blak Tribe will do our best to choose good quality pictures that best fit your writing theme.
